Big Red Santa Brings Happiness to All Ages
By Steve Sears
For Bob Smith, it may have started in 2009, but you can tell during discussion with him that he’s had the Santa Claus goodness within him all along.
Just ask Emily.
Although in his words he was terrified when he first dressed up as the Big Red Santa and the event was a success, it was best defined by little Emily, who the next day visited the event organizer and thanked them for bringing a real Santa Claus. “And it was because I was nice and I had a real beard,” Smith says. It mattered not to Emily that the red Santa suit Smith wore was older, that his beard was short, or whether it was sprinkled with baby powder. What mattered was Smith’s kindness to her, which Emily returned the following year, she showing up with a gift for the Big Red Santa.
“I think 90% of Santas find their way into the role by someone asking them to fill in for somebody that can’t make it,” Smith says. “I think 100% of the people who get that question are kind of reluctant to do that because they’ve never done it before.”
Smith wasn’t reluctant when first asked thirteen years ago. He filled the role, but was concerned his voice wouldn’t be correct or he’d say something wrong. The request came from a group called Rainbows for All Children, a nationwide group which meets with and supports children who had a parent pass away during the year and are grieving. Smith recalls the instructions he received at that time. ‘They said, ‘We’ve got all the toys, we’ve got the bag. Just show up, everything’s tagged, call up the kids, take the picture, and off you go.’” The group had available a Santa Claus suit from K-Mart, and Smith took care of the rest. “I had this very short George Clooney beard,” he says. “It really wasn’t quite right, and I peppered it with some baby powder, be-
cause I was not going to wear a previously used polyester beard. Then I threw on a white turtleneck to cover the lack of beard.”
After his first appearance, Smith returned the suit and thought nothing more about dressing up as Santa Claus –until the following September, when he was asked by Rainbows for All Children to do it again. This time, not only was the child called up, but Smith also asked the parent who had lost a spouse to head forward as well. Smith explains. “I would say, ‘What would you like for Christmas?’ and ‘How have you been?’ I realized it’s about the family.”
During his first eight years as Santa Claus, Smith would do just a gig or two per year. In addition to the Rainbows event, he would get calls to do Breakfast with Santa get-togethers. As he started to get more requests for appearances, he then began to buttress his Santa skills. “For the first eight years, I had no idea that there were Santa Claus organizations,” Smith says. “There are Santa Claus groups that will help you hone your skills in terms that if you’re going to see 200 kids in a day, one or two of them are going to be on the autism spectrum. How do you handle that? How do you deal with sensitivity in terms of questions? If somebody asks, ‘Can you bring grandma back?’ There’s that part of it, the part in the chair, which we call ‘Chair Time.’ And then there’s also the business side of it.”
For the record, Smith now dons a custom-made Santa Claus suit, and his appearances aren’t limited just to the Christmas season. During this past summer, he had three Christmas in July gigs. Also, it took about six or seven years to convince Mrs. Claus (Smith’s wife, Pam) to make appearances with him. “The Knights of Columbus, every time they saw her, they said, ‘You’re coming to the Breakfast with Santa, too?’ and she would say, ‘No, no, no.’ I just bought her the dress, and once she had the dress, she was okay
with it, and said it was a lot of fun. And Mrs. Claus is an integral part of the Santa experience.”

Little Falls Holds First-Ever Cross-Country Team Race at Passaic Valley High
By Tina Pappas
Kids in fourth through eighth grades were in a running mindset recently when they took part in the first ever cross-country event hosted by Little Falls.
Jack Switzer, team coach for Little Falls Cross-Country Team, said the event was held in the Township for the West Essex CrossCountry League, comprised of students from Little Falls, Bloomfield, Cedar Grove, Montclair and West Orange. It was held at Passaic Valley High School (PVHS) on Oct. 8.
“This was our inaugural race that we hosted,” Switzer explained. “We’ve been to other meets but this was our first time running it and it was a great success.»
According to Switzer, the West Essex Cross-Country League alternates with different towns to run races.
“What we hosted was a culmination of two seasons worth,” he added. “Last year we formed the Little Falls Cross-Country Team, which gives kids in Little Falls a chance to compete. This is a team sport and our focus is about learning rather than being entirely competitive.”
He also said that kids get to experience a cross-country race competition while receiving lessons about running, posture, breathing, stamina, pacing, and even hydration and mental challenges.
“Running is not easy,” he emphasized.
“One of the successes that I see is what this event says about the kids who take part in it. They come out because they want to be there, they want to learn, and I think they’re doing great! They’re very successful when they’re taking part in the meet.”
The race began at 3 p.m. and ended at approximately 4 p.m., with each race category lasting between 10 and 20 minutes. It began at the PVHS turf field with Little Falls students who raced with other kids from towns within the West Essex Cross-Country League. Medals were given to fourth and fifth grade top three finishers for boys and girls. Medals were also given to sixth, seventh and eighth grade top three finishers for boys and girls. Switzer stressed that cross-country racing differs than regular track racing in many ways.
“Cross-country is different in that you’re dealing with terrain changes and different textures on the ground that you’re running on.” he further explained. “You start out on a turf field and then you continue onto gravel, and then onto grass, which is not even. Cross-country racing requires you to be physically and mentally prepared. You don’t get any breaks or time-outs.”
Switzer added that he and team manager Patti Swaney, along with coach Steve Bertogli, were honored to receive the opportunity to host the event by the
Little Falls Recreation Department. He also thanked Mayor Damiano and council members. Special thanks was given to the Department of Public Works and the Little Falls Police Department. In addition, he thanked PVHS track and field coach Erik Getz, who laid out the cross-country course. CERT volunteers were also acknowledged.
“The goal is to provide an outlet for kids
in those grades who want to learn about running,” he noted. “The outpouring of support is what made the event successful and we could not have done this without all the volunteers who came out in the community, They were like ambassadors for this sport. It was very encouraging and we’re hoping to make this an annual event.”

Q&A
What is Achilles tendonitis?
Achilles tendonitis is a painful condition caused by the degeneration of fibrous tissue and inflammation in your Achilles tendon.
Your Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in your body, and it connects your calf muscles to your ankle and feet. It plays a critical role in your mobility.
What are the symptoms of Achilles tendonitis?
Achilles tendonitis can
The pain and stiffness are usually worse in the mornings or after periods of rest, and the symptoms usually lessen after you start moving your feet, ankles, and legs.
You may also experience heel pain, a thickening of your tendon, and a limited ability to flex or point your foot.
What causes Achilles tendonitis?
Achilles tendonitis is caused by repetitive strain on your tendon. Your tendon becomes weaker as you age, which increases your risk of both repetitive strain injuries like tendonitis as well as acute injuries like tears or ruptures.
Some of the risk factors for getting Achilles tendonitis include:
Older age
Foot problems like high arches or flat feet
Wearing shoes that fit poorly or are worn out Medical conditions, like psoriasis or high blood pressure
You can reduce your risk of developing Achilles tendonitis by taking rest days during your training schedule.
You should also gradually increase your physical activity levels in both duration and intensity. And always make sure to warm up and cool down by stretching your calf muscles.

How is Achilles tendonitis treated?
Dr. Wachtler begins your treatment with a thorough exam. He asks questions about your symptoms, including how long you’ve been experiencing them, and whether they’re stronger at certain times of the day or after physical activity.
Once he’s diagnosed your condition, he recommends treatments, such as rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medications, to relieve your symptoms.
Dr. Wachtler also teaches you stretches and gentle exercises to release the
tension on your Achilles tendon. He can also prescribe orthotic devices to provide support to your feet and ankles.
In rare cases, when your condition doesn’t respond to conservative treatment, Dr. Wachtler may recommend surgery to repair your Achilles tendon.
If you think you might have Achilles tendonitis, call or book an appointment online with Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists today.

Help Your Feet by Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain
Courtesy Dr. Anant Joshi
The season of over-eating is upon us.
From Thanksgiving straight through to Christmas and New Year’s festive occasions, tempting foods will be in high supply. While you will want to enjoy your holiday favorites, overdoing it can harm your feet. Carrying excess weight can cause or exacerbate many common foot conditions including plantar fasciitis, arthritis, flat feet, sesamoiditis, and more. Weight gain also makes it harder to control conditions like diabetes and heart disease which negatively impact your feet.
Below are some tips to help you feast mindfully and avoid weight gain:
Map out the buffet table. Before you start to fill your plate see what all your options are and plan what you will pick. Be sure that at least half your plate is filled with salad, raw vegetables, or other lowercalorie options.
Nibble strategically. Affairs where the food is laid out and self-serve can be the trickiest. Choose a small plate for your food and when you finish what is on it throw it out or put it in the sink. Do not stand or sit and chat next to the food table
to help avoid mindless eating.
Balance your food choices. If you look forward to eggnog and Christmas cookies, you can enjoy them in moderation if you consciously make tradeoffs in your eating plan. Choose more salads, vegetables, fruits, and lower-calorie healthy foods throughout the day to offset a few wellchosen treats.
Watch your cheer consumption. Decide ahead of time on the number of alcoholic beverages you will have and stick to it. Have a large glass of water or seltzer in between alcoholic drinks. This will also help you feel full.
Weigh yourself daily. It will help you stay accountable and avoid the “I’ll start on Monday” mentality of weight control.
Get an adequate amount of sleep. Holiday parties, shopping, and work deadlines can result in later bedtimes and less sleep. Studies show that when we are tired, we tend to consume more calories.
Stay active. Keep up your regular exercise program. Devise bad weather alternatives if your fitness routine normally takes place outdoors. Try to build more opportunities for calorie burning
into your day: park farther away from the store, walk while you talk on the phone, and take the long way up and down the aisles at the grocery store if you have time. This will burn off a few of the holiday treat calories and help you avoid the unwanted gift of extra pounds this season.
Put your feet first this holiday season. If you have any concerns regarding your foot health, do not hesitate to contact our office or schedule an appointment online.

Very friendly staff! Dr J was referred to me by a coworker and I was just as pleased with his bedside manner and profession alism. He explained all my options and I didn’t feel pushed to make a quick decision.
First of all, booking an appointment was so easy! I submitted a request online and got a phone call not even 10 minutes later from Ebony to confirm an appointment. Dr. Joshi, the ladies at the front desk, the x-ray technician and all of the staff I encountered were very busy yet remained friendly. They are also very professional and clean. I am so satisfied with my visit that I am trying to get my family to book an appointment there.

Little Falls Lights It Up Pink to Highlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month during the month of October. The special lighting was on for the week of Oct. 10.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month, also referred to as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is an annual international health campaign organized by breast cancer charities every October in order to increase awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research.
According to national breastcancer.org, an estimated 287,500 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S. in 2022, with 51,400 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
Approximately 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, with an estimated 30 percent of all new women cancer diagnoses of breast cancer in 2022. About 2,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in 2022.
There are over 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. thanks to early
detection. 65 percent of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at a localized stage and the 5-year relative survival rate is 99 percent, according to cancer.net.
“This week we light it up pink in support of those with breast cancer and to bring awareness to this terrible disease,” said Mayor James Damiano.

oodland Park Borough was recently notified of an additional $200,000 grant from the Passaic County Board of Commissioners Open Space Fund for the planned Diane Grimes Park Improvement Project.
The Borough had already received a $225,000 Passaic County Open Space Grant, a $95,000 US Congress Congressionally Directed Funding FY22 Grant, and a $75,000 New Jersey Department of Community Affairs Local Recreational Improvement Grant for this project. This $595,000 in grant funds will allow for a complete overhaul of the Grimes playground area in this first phase of a two-phase project which is planned. Phase two would involve the upper field and lighting improvements. The playground plan is being completed and it will model Verona Park in Verona, where playground amenities are built into the topography of the park. It will also feature an Americans With Disabilities Actaccessible play structure.
The Grimes Park renovation is just one of numerous improvement projects the Recreation Department detailed to the Borough Council during a recent presentation. The vision plan includes:
- Memorial Field: replacement of playground surface behind Beatrice Gilmore School, lighting upgrades to LED lights, and lighting system upgrade to enable phone-controlled operation and automatic schedules
- School 1: replacement of older, dated playground equipment on the far corner of the property
- Cavalieri Park on Bergen Boulevard: two full-sized tennis courts that will double as pickle-ball courts, new pathway to get from the street to the playground and courts, a new parking lot to mitigate street parking, fence improvements, and resurfacing of the playground area. The properties on both sides of the park were obtained by the Borough as part of flood buyouts and will enable the park expansion.

Find the right solution for your child
For kids, occupational therapy helps those who are having difficulty with the normal daily “occupations” of childhood. This includes play skills, self-help skills, self-care activities, social-emotional development and learning.
Pediatric occupational therapy focuses on a child’s neuromotor development, sensory integration, fine motor skills, self-care, and play skills. It’s used to treat children with a variety of special needs and diagnoses. And it aims to maximize functional and age-appropriate skills through the use of therapeutic play, exercise, and adaptation of the environment.
Sensory integration treatments provide challenging therapeutic activities with an enriched sensory experience in order to maximize your child’s ability to participate in daily life activities.
At the Pediatric Therapy Center of New Jersey, we use what we call our “sensory gym” to put this plan of care into action.
Who benefits from Occupational Therapy Services?
Children might require occupational
therapy for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to:
Gross and fine motor delays
Sensory processing delays
Sensory defensiveness
Visual perceptual deficits
Decreased attention and focus
Coordination difficulties
Handwriting deficits
Social interaction
Clumsy or poor balance
Low muscle tone
Poor endurance
Poor motor planning new activities
Anxious or resistant to new activities
Difficulty transitioning
Poor organizational skills
Craving for, or hypersensitivity to: movement, heights, touch from others, feel of clothes, tastes/textures of foods, sounds, and smells
Poor awareness of surroundings or attention to detail
Hyperactive, distractible, or lethargic behaviors
Easily frustrated (showing withdrawn or aggressive behaviors)
Difficulty calming down or falling asleep Difficulty with coloring, cutting or handwriting skills

Why Do You Need A Chiropractor?
Courtesy Dr. Gabriel Hannawi, DC Chiropractic Physician
Usually you go to see a Chiropractor if you are suffering with back, neck, or joint pain. Therapeutic procedures performed by Chiropactors are commonly known as “spinal manipulation” or “chiropractic adjustment”. The purpose of these procedures is to help you regain mobility of joints that have become restricted as the result of a tissue injury or repetitive stress to the affected area.
At Elite Spine & Sports Care of Totowa our very experienced Chiropractic staff practice a handson approach to your health care. This includes examination, diagnosis and treatment. This excellent Chiropractic care is offered by trained professionals who are able to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, along with lifestyle
changes.
What Causes Tissue Injury?
Tissue injury can be caused by heavy lifting or repeated stress to an area of your body. These injured tissues result in physical and chemical changes that cause inflammation and pain. The work of a Chiropractor by manipulation or adjustment is meant to restore mobility and relieve pain. This allows tissues to heal.
What Should the Results of Chiropractic Care Be?
When undergoing Chiropractic care your goals should include: Reduction of joint restriction Restoration of range of motion improvement in postural awareness Improvement in muscle and joint flexibility
Restoration of spinal alignment

hen it comes to fall, certain foods become an iconic representation of the season. Sweet treats are certainly part of the seasonal traditions for many families, especially when they call for the versatile flavor of apples.
You can make your next family dessert a hit with the rich taste of Country Cara mel Apples, a simple take on a classic fall treat that calls for just three ingredients.
Just carve out round pieces of apple, insert toothpicks into each bite then let little ones help roll on the caramel dip and crushed pecans.
An option like the Envy apple, which has been referred to as “the ultimate apple experience” for its consistently balanced, refreshing sweetness coupled with a crisp, elegant crunch, adds just the right texture. Easy to spot with their crimson red skin over a golden background that practically glows, the apples are naturally descended from Braeburn and Royal Gala apple va rieties, bred by farmers who use time-hon ored plant-breeding methods. Plus, the apples’ bright white flesh is naturally slow to brown when sliced, so they stay fresher longer.

Find Out How Stretching Can Improve Your Life!
Courtesy Dr. Raffaele Lagonigro, PT
Stretching Comes with a Multitude of Benefits – Discover Them Today!
Exercising on a regular basis is a great way to both maintain and improve your health and wellness.
However, if you’re not stretching before and after your workouts, you aren’t taking full advantage of a complete workout routine.
According to the Mayo Clinic, “stretching can increase flexibility and improve your joints’ range of motion, helping you move more freely, and ensuring that you have equal flexibility on both sides might help protect you from injury.”
There are several specific benefits to stretching both before and after a workout.
For more information, contact us to consult with a physical therapist!
How can physical therapy help with stretching?
It’s important to make sure that you’re doing the right kind of stretches both before and after your workout. A physical therapist can design a treatment plan based on your specific exercise and stretching needs.
No matter what types of physical activity that you are engaging in, physical therapy can help you make the most of your activities. Your physical therapist can help guide you on which types of stretches are best suited to your current physical condition, as well as the type of activities you’re participating in.
It’s also important to
make sure you do the right exercises in the correct ways. Contact us today to schedule an appointment with a qualified physical therapist and learn what stretches are right for you. Physical therapy can help you get the most out of your workouts and improve your overall health!
What types of stretches can I implement into my daily life?
There are several different types of stretches a person can do before and after a workout.
It’s important to know
which types are right for you and when you should use them in a workout.
Ballistic stretching: Ballistic stretching involves bouncing movement to push muscles beyond a normal range of motion.
Dynamic stretching: These are active movements that are not held but still cause muscles to stretch. These are often done to prepare your muscles for movement.
Static stretching:
This involves holding a particular stretch for 10 to 20 seconds. This type of stretch should feel comfortable and is normally done after a workout.
Why you should stretch after your workouts
You may be tempted to go straight into relaxation mode after a workout. It’s important, however, to get in even a few minutes of stretching.
There are several specific
benefits of stretching after you finish your workout.
Relaxation for both the body and mind. It’s beneficial for both body and mind to gradually slow down. When you stretch after a workout you’re giving yourself the chance to gradually wind-down.
Pain relief and future injury prevention. Muscles that stay tight after a workout are more prone to injury. PT in Motion continued on page 30

states that the right kind of stretching exercises can limit pain throughout the body. Loosening up your muscles will also reduce your chance of injury.
Lactic acid release. Lactic acid is produced when you work out. This substance can make muscles achy and tired. Stretching can help reduce the amount of lactic acid throughout your body.
Why you should stretch before your workouts
You should always start your workout with a series of stretching exercises. Stretching 5 to 10 minutes is probably enough for most activities.
It’s important, however, to adequately stretch all the muscles you’ll be using.
There are several specific advantages you’ll receive when adequately stretching before your workout.
Improved flexibility and range of motion. Correct stretching will loosen your
muscles and tendons. This will increase flexibility and range of motion during your workout.
Enhanced blood circulation. The first thing stretching can do is increase your blood flow. Increased blood flow to your muscles prepares them for strenuous activity.
Improved health and wellness. All of the above; increased blood flow, flexibility, and range of motion, will improve overall performance.

Trucks & Treats Delight Ghoulish Attendees in Little Falls
By Tina Pappas
Halloween Night proved to be a hit with ghoulish residents of the Township. The Trucks & Treats celebration was held at Memorial Park on Wilmore Road, where attendees were treated to “A Taco Affair” and “The Blended Bistro” food trucks. Residents also passed out candy with tables they set up in Memorial Park.
According to Councilman Al Kahwaty, the idea to throw a Halloween Party in the park to celebrate with the center of town has always been a Halloween destination.
“Tonight, we finally got the weather we needed to do it the way we’ve always planned,” he explained. “So much fun dressing up and joining the fun, we know everyone enjoyed it as much as we did!”
The Township plans to make Trucks & Treats an annual event.

Little Falls Farmers Market Offers Up Halloween-Themed Quality Goods for Patrons
By Tina Pappas
The weekly Farmers Market was the place to be for a Halloween-themed, festive atmosphere on Oct. 30. Vendors pulled out all the stops to celebrate, while promoting their quality items to those who browsed.
According to the Schneider family, local residents, they couldn’t agree more.
“We love shopping here and we always try to buy our veggies as organic,” Kelly Schneider said. “Allison Akbay’s Snapping Turtle Farm is definitely one of our favorites.”
Local resident Donna Murone, echoed the sentiment, saying she always looks forward to getting fresh, quality ingredients for her family at the Farmers Market.
“I’m very into whole foods,” she explained, as she purchased produce from Do Re Me Farms. “I think the quality of these items speak for themselves.”
Alex Rodriguez, whose uncle John is owner, works for the family-owned business.
“Naturally-grown makes a difference and I really feel that our customers know that,” he explained.
Mo & Jay’s Pastry garnered a visit from local resident Jackie Friedman-Collins, who said that the delicious pastries are worth getting by visiting the market.
“This is by far my favorite place to visit
and I’ve been coming here to the Farmers Market the last few years since they’ve been running it. There is so much variety and the people here are great,” she said.
Pat Collins, also a local resident, agreed and relished the pastries.
“This is the closest I can get to having pastries from Paris, France, and their croissants are excellent!” he said. “I know this because I’ve been to Paris.”
Edward Fiorentino and Floris Ellis paid a visit to Montclair Brewery, a husband and wife owned microbrewery, tasting room and outdoor beer garden.
“We love coming here to find new things and the brewery has quality beer that we can sample,” she said. “It’s great.”
Godfrey Phillips, who was working the stand said patrons come to the Montclair location for their “culturally intriguing beers” but also enjoy the Farmers Market.
“It’s fun for them trying out different tastes and it’s also a great atmosphere here,” he explained.
Roy Morales of Jersey Pickles said freshness is always on-hand for pickle fans, including other delicacies.
“A lot of people follow us on Facebook and Instagram,” Morales said. “We’re familyowned and use the freshest ingredients!”

Josh McCain of Josh Chocolates attests to being a “bean to bar chocolatier.”
“This is the stuff you want to eat while giving chocolate out this Halloween,” he said, adding that he only uses traceable ingredients so that farmers are paid fair wages through reusable agriculture.
“It was two years in March that I started this business. My company is also veteran owned because I am a 20-plus year veteran of the Armed Forces,” he noted.
The Soupeteer’s Kayla Reed said she is a one-woman operation specializing in soups that are gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options.
«My motto is having a soup for all,» she said. «What makes my soup different is that I make each one with love.»
She also said she is loyal to those who run the
Farmers Market for giving her business a start.
“It’ll be two years this weekend that I’ve been featured here, and I love all the people associated with this market.”
Carlos Cano of Cano Coffee Company specializes in Colombian coffee and grows his coffee on his family farm, where they
take part in every step of the coffee production.
“We then roast it every Tuesday in Astoria, Queens. We also package it and distribute it,” he said.
High Mountain Foods, which offers fresh mozzarella, pasta, stuffed bread, barbecue ribs, and more, also boast having the “World’s Best Crab Cakes,”
according to Amarilys Capella, who works for owner Vito Lombardo.
“It’s good stuff!” she touted.
Dr. Mary J. Sayegh, DMD, welcomed passersby to her table where she promoted her new pediatric dentistry office in Fairfield, along with her husband Paul Juzdan.
“I just want to invite
everyone to come by New Jersey Pediatric Dentistry,” she said. “We’re holding a raffle for a new electric toothbrush here today as well.”
Also, on-hand was the Little Falls Library Director Jennifer Larrinaga and Library Board of Trustees President Anne Kahwaty who set up a table to
promote all the library has to offer. The Recreation Department’s Nadine Heinis also promoted upcoming events.
A Halloween parade was also given for tots in town earlier in the day, where prizes were awarded for best costume.

Life Saving Award
Mayor Keith Kazmark and the Woodland Park Borough Council recently meeting honored two Woodland Park Police officers - Sgt. Robert Lepore and Off. Justin Castro, two West Paterson First Aid Squad members - John Pasquarellio and Joanna Thoma, and four West Paterson Fire Department members - Asst. Chief Andrew Roehrich, Asst. Chief Anthony Ficarra, Capt. Sean Raub and firefighter David Garcia - with Life Saving Awards.
On July 14, the Police Department received an emergency call on a report of an unresponsive male. Upon arrival, George Marousis was being tended to by his sons in the basement bathroom. With swift action by the First Aid Squad, no pulse could be found, a defibrillator

was set up, and CPR was initiated. An assistance call was put out to the Fire Department to help with moving Mr. Marousis to the ambulance. St. Joseph’s Hospital ALS unit arrived and assisted with CPR. With everyone working together, Mr. Marousis was moved to the ambulance for transport to the hospital.
“Due to everyone working together quickly, Mr. Marousis is still with
us today,” said Police Chief John Uzzalino.
“Presenting Life Saving Awards is not something we get to do very often,” said Mayor Kazmark before honoring the first responders for their exemplary actions in providing life-saving treatment and being a shining example in providing exceptional service to residents. “This type of call is not the kind of call
any emergency responder wants to be called to. We are so glad you are here Mr. Marousis with us to celebrate.”
In addition to the awards presented to the first responders, on behalf of the Mayor’s office and for helping the first responders and helping their father, Mr. Marousis’ two sons, John and Greg, were presented with a Mayor’s Pin and Challenge Coins from the
Passaic County Chiefs of Police Association.
“These first responders, they’re a different type. They’re a different breed, a different caliber of humans,” said George Marousis’ wife Tina. “I just can’t stress enough how important EMS services are to cities. They are critical. They are crucial to the livelihood of the community. It’s so important funding and support to be available
for these services to the community. It’s one of the most critical services any community can have. We all just want to say thank you to these angels among us.”
Mr. Marousis also expressed his appreciation.
“I just want to say thank you to every single one of them that helped save my life,” he said. “Thank you very much, again and again.”
