All Sports Museum in Bridgeton Houses South Jersey Sports History

If not for the inviting gold and green sign saying, “Welcome to All-Sports Museum of Southern New Jersey,” passers-by might never know of how much local, regional, collegiate and professional sports memorabilia and artifacts lay inside a regular, modest building in Bridgeton.

But there’s more than enough with more planned.

The building was originally part of Cumberland County Community College but changed hands. At some point, hopefully sooner than later, the clanging of hammers to nails and the sounds of buzzing drills to install more siding and roofing will take place adjacent to the six-room, 1500 square foot cozy

museum. At least this is what museum chairman and chief curator Dom Valella hopes for, as the expansion is planned in the hopes of providing more indoor space to remember more athletes and contributors to southern New Jersey sports fame – for those from Trenton down to Cape May actually.

There’s an Eagles room, a Phillies room, a Sixers room, a Flyers room and even a Cumberland County room, for impressive athletes who have a connection to that area.

“Pioneers, contributors, athletes and coaches are in here,” says Valella. “We’ve had some who want to be paid to be in here but we just don’t do that. In many sports hall of fames like this, they say one needs to wait five years to enter after their contribution is made and they’ve essentially retired.” Not

the case in Bridgeton, where Valella is hoping he can add two NFL rookies he doesn’t want to name at this time, one of which plays for the AFC Champion, Kansas City Chiefs, to the collection this year.

If so, these rookies will occupy spots alongside greats remembered such as Phillies 2008 World Series coach, Charlie Manuel, a longtime Haddonfield, NJ resident; legendary title-holder, boxer Joe Frazier from Philadelphia who trained in Vineland, NJ and was inducted posthumously. Gold glove phenom, Willie Mays who, while working for Resorts International in Atlantic City, donated a gold glove just over 25 years ago in exchange for a few buckets of peaches and plums. He added a “Say Hey Willie Mays” jersey too with the glove. Mays was a frequent visitor to the Bridgeton Invitational Baseball

Tournament, an annual tournament Valella coached, showing his personal affinity for baseball.

“About five years ago, we were able to get a Jackie Robinson statue from the African-American Negro Hall of Fame in Newton,” said Valella. “A lot of schools came with 15 to 20 students at a time. I’d give tours and the kids learned a lot,” he added, realizing Robinson’s importance in the equal rights movement in professional sports.

21-year-old local ice hockey player Johnny Gaudreau from Pennsgrove High School, who was a top scorer for the NHL’s Calgary Flames has a spot in the Hall, thanks to police chief of Bridgeton, Michael Gaimari, who knows Johnny’s family and recom-

mended him to Valella. Dozens of plaques and trophies sit in the Hall at 8 Richie Kates Sr. Way in Bridgeton.

Right now, Valella is focused on the next induction ceremony to be held Saturday, March 11 at 11am at Ramblewood Country Club in Mount Laurel, where the Hall welcomes ESPN and NFL analyst, Sal Paolantonio to its membership. So yes, there’s a spot for sports commentators with a significant tie to New Jersey, in the museum. Just ask Philadelphia sports commentator Michael Barkann and former Phillie and commentator for the team, Ricky Bottalico, who have been inducted already. Both have ties to the Garden State.

Former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski

will be the special guest speaker on the 11th while sports radio talk show host Joe DiCamara will be the guest master of ceremonies.

Later this year, Paolantonio wants to hold another fund-raiser for the expansion of the facility. “We run the museum now as a non-profit with donations,” Valella noted.

The price of admission is free. “The expansion will be a large task for a small facility started 58 years ago in 1965.

There’s plenty to be optimistic about for sports enthusiasts in New Jersey. Even a nonsports enthusiast can come here and learn about South Jersey history,” said Valella.

WP Amazon Distribution Center

The Borough of Woodland Park held a ribbon cutting at the SNJ1 Amazon Distribution Center on McBride Avenue. After years of serving the Kearfott Guidance and Navigation Corp., the redeveloped site houses about 400 employees as well as a fleet of independent “Flex” drivers who pick up deliveries from the site.

The 205,000-square-foot facility utilizes advanced robotics to provide an efficient operation that can have

packages to customers in as few as five hours. The 120 Flex drivers currently working with the site are delivering Same-day to a radius of about 30 miles.

A same-day pick-up hybrid site, the Woodland Park Amazon is the only same-day fulfillment center in the entire network that features an Amazon Hub, an area where customers can come in to pick up packages from lockers as well as make returns.

Amazon will be a great benefit for the local economy and for taxpayers, Mayor Keith Kazmark noted, adding that the property will jump from a $10 million ratable to a $25 million ratable.

“We are exceptionally excited and look forward to a great partnership,” he said.

Orthotics are medical devices that fit into your shoes. Depending on your particular foot problem, they can cover the sole of your shoes, just the heel, or just the ball of your foot.

The two main forms of orthotics are:

Functional orthotics

Functional orthotics treat biomechanical foot problems and insufficiencies. They support and properly position all the tissues in your foot, allowing you to stand and move efficiently. This minimizes inflammation, reduces pain, improves your gait, and prevents injury.

Accommodative orthotics

Accommodative orthotics don’t treat biomechanical foot issues, but they do help with some types of foot pain. This form of orthotic is soft and gives extra cushioning where you need it.

When do I need orthotics?

Dr. Wachtler may prescribe orthotics for many reasons, including:

What Are Orthotics?

Plantar fasciitis

Foot arch pain

Foot ulcers

Neuromas

Bunions

Hammertoe

Corns

Calluses

Bursitis

Arthritis

Achilles tendinitis

Excessive inward foot movement (overpronation)

Too little inward foot movement (supination)

Custom orthotics can also be part of an athletic optimization plan. Professional and amateur athletes wear custom orthotics to help them achieve the best possible physical performance.

What’s the orthotics process like?

Dr. Wachtler diagnoses your condition and then recommends an orthotic type that can help. He creates a mold of your foot using either a traditional cast or laser scan. A medical equipment laboratory then creates your custom-molded orthotics using your foot impressions.

When you return to Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists to get your new orthotics, Dr. Wachtler can make any minor

adjustments needed at that time. Are orthotics comfortable?

Orthotics are made of high-quality materials, from soft and springy foams to rigid graphite and other medicalgrade materials. Generally, they’re quite comfortable because they fit your foot so precisely.

With the harder orthotics materials, you can expect a breaking-in period, much like breaking in a new pair of shoes. Orthotics won’t increase your pain, cause blisters, or trigger other foot issues. Once you grow used to them, they feel just like part of your shoes.

Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists offers state-of-theart, custom-molded orthotics for all types of foot needs. Call the office learn more.

Purify in Little Falls Opens with Ribbon-Cutting Celebration

Anew oasis has opened up in the Township. Purify, An Urban Sweat Lodge, located at 169 Newark Pompton Turnpike, celebrated its first franchise grand opening with with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Feb. 11.

Samantha Albano first started the business in Sarasota, Florida in 2018, She originally worked for a land development company but knew it wasn’t the right fit for her. It was then she realized that she wanted to help people. That’s when she came up with the idea to start her own holistic business.

“I’ve always been passionate about holistic living, health and wellness,” Albano explained. “I knew I wanted infrared but there was nothing in my town that offered it. So I created Purify, where we offer infrared detox body wraps. It’s a health and wellness boutique, where customers can come in and sweat out impurities. This helps with inflammation, joint and back pain, including relieving headaches.”

Some of the services offered at the location are far infrared detox, lymph detox, and far infrared face treatments. Albano added that infrared body wrap sessions can help rid the body of lead, cholesterol, fats, metals, dioxins, nicotine, mercury, alcohol, sulfuric acid and aluminum.

“My goal was for this business to be up and running was to help people in my town.” she said, adding that the

first franchisees of the business, Nicole Lobosco and Nick Freda, first tried it out for themselves when they visited her at the original location in Sarasota while on vacation.

The two plan to marry in the spring.

“They told me that if they could start their own

business, they would love to do a Purify in Little Falls,” she noted. “They came in on vacation and next they’re business owners!”

Lobosco said starting the business was personal for her because it helped with the daily stress of her job after trying it for the first time. As a teacher she says she felt stressed to begin with and her thyroid condition left her feeling fatigued for the past few years.

“My business co-owner and fiancé Nick also suffers from back pain,” she explained. “His back felt great after we tried it and so did I. It gave us that relief that we needed. After this trip, our world completely changed. You take that time to help yourself when you try this, especially after a hard day. Our bodies deserve it!”

Freda, who grew up in Little Falls, said he looked forward to bringing the business to the Township.

“I just wanted to help out the community and bring this new franchise here in town. I wanted to help others by sharing with them this relief,” he said. “I’m looking towards the future and we’re excited because we want to pass it along

to everyone else.”

Lobosco expressed her appreciation towards everyone who came to the event, thanking their family, friends and customers.

“I couldn’t be any happier and we’re very grateful for our customers here in town,” she emphasized. “We want to thank everyone, especially Sam and Florida for coming up. She’s the mastermind of the business.”

Mayor James Damiano and members of the Township Council celebrated the opening of the new location with a ribboncutting. Damiano commented afterwards calling the business “a very unique addition to Little Falls.”

“It’s something that I think Little Falls is in desperate need of,” he said. “We’re in need of unique, niche businesses here in town and that’s exactly what this is. It’s an absolutely tremendous addition to our small town and I am more than thrilled. So congratulations, I’m very excited for you!”

Little Falls Police Present DWI Awards To Two Detectives

The Little Falls Police Department recently acknowledged their detectives for their efforts in keeping motorists and residents safe in the Township.

Police Chief Bryan Prall presented the 2021 MADD awards to Detective Tim Fleck and Detective Chris Kania for their DWI enforcement at the Township Council meeting on Jan. 23. The award honors law enforcement officials for their continued efforts in cracking down on those who drive under the influence.

On-hand for the presentation was Mayor James Damiano, along with the Township Council, to congratulate both Fleck and Kania. Damiano said he always appreciated the aggressive enforcement of DWIs in Little Falls.

“It has always been a priority of our officers to ensure that Little Falls residents and all drivers remain safe,” he said. “I know that this department will continue to keep our streets safe by making sure that drivers know there is no tolerance for driving through Little Falls under the influence of any substance that impairs your ability to drive. Congratulations to both officers on such a tremendous award.”

Prall also commented after the presentation.

“They led the Little Falls Police Department in the enforcement of drunk and drugged driving laws,” he said. “We’re proud of the effort that these two officers put in.”

Very friendly staff! Dr J was referred to me by a coworker and I was just as pleased with his bedside manner and professionalism. He explained all my options and I didn’t feel pushed to make a quick decision.

First of all, booking an appointment was so easy! I submitted a request online and got a phone call not even 10 minutes later from Ebony to confirm an appointment. Dr. Joshi, the ladies at the front desk, the x-ray technician and all of the staff I encountered were very busy yet remained friendly. They are also very professional and clean. I am so satisfied with my visit that I am trying to get my family to book an appointment there.

Little Falls Holds Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for Love and Flow Studio - Please Use This Version

Awellness and healthy living vibe was in the air during a gathering celebrating Love and Flow Studio with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Mayor James Damiano and members of the Township Council held a grand re-opening on Jan. 28. The business, located at 66 Main Street, is owned by Jessica Gonzalez who has been in the professional beauty industry as a licensed cosmetologist for a decade.

Originally from Paterson and Clifton, Gonzalez graduated from Passaic County Technical Institute in Wayne where her vocational program was in cosmetology. She also attended Ramapo College. She says her overall goal is to empower women by sharing knowledge about non-toxic living, including spreading her message of the beauty of love. Her journey towards a holistic and organic philosophy began when members of her family were stricken with cancer.

“My mom and my aunt were both diagnosed with cancer and we never had cancer in our family,” she explained.

It was then she decided to take things head-on in order to become her own healer as she sensed there was a connection in what people put on and into their bodies.

“I began to dig and researched the benefits of a holistic lifestyle,” Gonzalez said, adding that she began conducting her own theories on health and wellness.

Having also dealt with the onset of eczema at the age of seven, she kept track of her clients with common health and skin issues like eczema, dandruff, acne, and cancer. After years of steroids and other topical skin treatments that she

said were ineffective on her skin, she now proudly houses a collection of hand-crafted hair and skin products that offer non-toxic, organic ingredients in her store.

Additionally, the products she offers do not take part in animal testing or contain any synthetic ingredients. She now

has an eclectic mix of clients ranging from ages 17 to 93 and that her aim is to spread “girl love” and “make the world a better place.”

“We collect beauty, feminine and wellness products for women in need,” she added.

Gonzales said she used to travel to many places before the pandemic but now seeks to support local vendors, which has brought her full circle. She added she’s very grateful to be opening her business and attributes the recent pandemic with her focus on wellness more than ever before.

“It’s great to have more local support,” she said. “Being half Peruvian, I went down the deep-end with plant medicine and I just love supporting local vendors that make things with their hands. My mom also does that, so I felt during COVID it was hard for artists to make money because many lost their jobs. It’s combination of all this, which brought me here and I want it to grow in

hopes of making things a little better. We aspire to inspire everyone to live a happy and healthy lifestyle.”

Gonzalez said her studio hosts painting, including macramé classes, a form of textile using knotting techniques. Also offered is Reiki Healing, an energy healing technique that promotes relaxation and reduces stress and anxiety. Pampas, healing crystal jewelry, as well as other wellness craft items are also sold at the store.

“Additionally there are beauty, travel and DIY tips in our Love and Flow Studio website blog,” she noted.

Damiano commented after the ceremony.

“Love and Flow has always been a great small business in Little Falls and their new location right next door to where they used to be keeps them in the heart of our downtown for all of us to continue to enjoy,” he said.

The temporomandibular joint connects your jaw to your skull. If there is an injury to this joint or it becomes damaged in any way, TMJ dysfunction may develop.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, also known as TMJ dysfunction, is a condition that causes pain and stiffness of the jaw joint and its surrounding muscles. The temporomandibular joint is a complex and important structure comprised of bones, tendons, and muscles that may cause you to feel pain on one or both sides of the jaw. This can make it very difficult to open your mouth, talk, yawn, and chew.

If you are having difficulty chewing or yawning, have jaw pain, or hear a clicking noise when you open and shut your mouth, you could have TMJ dysfunction. Request a free phone consult to find relief for your TMJ dysfunction with physical therapy.

How can I tell if I have TMJ Dysfunction?

There is no single method or surefire way of diagnosing TMJ dysfunction. If you believe you may be suffering from this condition, a medical professional will analyze your medical history and perform a physical exam. Your physician may also send you to an otolaryngologist or a dentist specializing in jaw disorders.

The idea is to rule out other medical problems before

TMJ Dysfunction

diagnosing the patient with TMJ dysfunction, as the symptoms may also be due to a condition known as trigeminal neuralgia, salivary gland disease, or even swollen lymph nodes. Once your diagnosis has been determined, you will be treated based on the nature of your symptoms.

Symptoms of this TMJ dysfunction include pain in the jaw, jaw popping, headaches, sore jaw muscles, locking of the jaw, pain in the temple, and earaches. There are many reasons why TMJ dysfunction may develop, but some common causes include misalignment of the teeth, gum chewing, arthritis, teeth grinding, or a jaw injury. How will physical therapy help with my TMJ Dysfunction?

In some cases, home remedies can be used to treat TMJ dysfunction. Some people respond well to overthe-counter pain relievers, such as Ibuprofen or Aspirin. Applying ice packs directly to the jaw joint can also help relieve pain. You may also find temporary relief through sedative essential oils, such as clary sage or lavender. When home remedies don’t work at providing long-term relief, medical intervention may be necessary. Stronger muscle relaxers or anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed to manage pain. A jaw specialist may also use a dental splint to keep teeth properly aligned and prevent tooth grinding. Other types of medical treatment include trigger point acupuncture, joint replacement, or a TMJ arthroscopy.

However, if you want to avoid taking pain-relieving medication and use a more holistic approach, physical therapy is perhaps one of the most effective treatments

for TMJ dysfunction. At your initial appointment with AIM Orthopedics: Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine, a comprehensive evaluation will be done on your neck, shoulder girdle, and thoracic spine in order to determine if those structures are causing your symptoms. Afterward, one of our dedicated Little Falls, NJ physical therapists will create a treatment plan based on the nature of your symptoms and your specific needs.

Our physical therapist will analyze your jaw mobility and release muscle tension in the areas surrounding your neck and head. The goal of physical therapy is to restore your normal function and the interaction of the jaw muscles and joints. Your treatment plan may consist of any combination of methods and modalities, including jaw exercises, soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, myofascial techniques, electrical stimulation, or ultrasound.

Contact AIM Orthopedics: Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine for relief:

Our physical therapists are patient-centric and committed to your health, working hard to help you manage and eliminate symptoms. If you are suffering from the symptoms of TMJ dysfunction, request a free phone consult with AIM Orthopedics: Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine. Don’t suffer from jaw pain and stiffness any longer.

Factors to Consider When Observing Handwriting

Pencil grip: is it functional or nonfunctional?

Is dynamic finger movement present? If the hand and wrist move as a unit or the whole arm is moving during handwriting, this would be considered “static.” For optimal handwriting, the fingers should be moving dynamically and fluidly.

Posture & core: The foundation for distal fine motor skills to develop is having a strong, supported core. Poor core and upper body strength may impact fine motor strength and dexterity.

Positioning desk & table height: If a student’s desk is too high or too low, this will impact function. Proper positioning is important too, observe how a child sits in their chair. Are there feet squarely on the floor (or can they even touch the floor?), are they sitting upright in their chair, facing

forward?

Hand dominance: Lack of established hand dominance may lead to delays in handwriting skill. This is oftentimes due to the lack of adequate motor practice for one side to establish as dominant.

We hope these tips help you if you suspect your child is having difficulty with their handwriting!

The Summer of 1968: The Sacred Sacrifice

There are moments in our life, which leave a deep mark upon your heart, mind and soul, that they are simply not to be forgotten. Such a sacred moment came on a Saturday morning, in the middle of June of 1968. I was 14 years old and had just completed my freshman year at Boonton High School.

Dad and I were eating breakfast at the kitchen table at the old Mabey Homestead. Mom and my sister, Patti, had left earlier to visit Mom’s mother in Boonton. Dad and I sat at the kitchen table eating Wheaties cereal and sipping hot tea. I remember that we were talking about the big, week-long hike along the Appalachian Trail that was planned for Boy Scout Troop 170, for the next week.

Then, Dad did something a bit unusual. He took the inner bag of Wheaties, from the box and began cutting out the front and back cardboard. Then Dad did something even more unusual. He took one of the pieces of cardboard and laid it flat on the kitchen table, next to his bowl of Wheaties. Then Dad took one of his shoes and traced the bottom of his shoe onto the cardboard with a pencil. Then repeated the process with the other piece of cardboard and his other shoe.

I remember simply asking my father, “Dad, watcha doing?”

Dad then answered me with me with a smile on his face, “I’m tracing my shoes on the cardboard. I got these holes in both my shoes!” Dad then showed me the small holes in his shoes. They were big enough so that Dad could put his forefinger through both of them.

“Dad, why don’t ya’ just go and buy new shoes?” I asked my father.

Dad’s reply deeply moved my heart. “I’m a working man. I’ve got to save my money for you to be able to go to college.” And, in so few words, Dad spoke volumes.

I remember being lost for words. I remember being all so deeply moved. “I see,” was all I could conjure up to say.

I never forgot that moment. Now at 69, it sometimes haunts me in my dreams. My father dropped out of high school to join the Army Air Corps during World War II. It was later in life that Dad earned his GED and attended classes at Drew University to become a Lay Leader in the Methodist Church. Despite having had dropped out of high school to serve in the Army Air Corps, my father had an immense respect and love for education. My father was one of the wisest men I have ever known.

Something Could Be Hiding...

Ankle sprains are often cast off as a minor problem, when in fact they should be treated as a potential longterm problem. In the best scenario, a single ligament is injured when you twist an ankle. In the worst scenario, several ligaments are involved as well as the ankle joint.

An x-ray doesn’t tell the

whole story. The best initial treatment is to control the swelling and stabilize the ankle with a special ankle brace.

If the pain doesn’t improve in one month, an MRI may be indicated.

An MRI can indicate if something is hiding inside the joint. A piece of cartilage or bone could have broken off.

The ultimate goals are to avoid long-term pain and the need for surgery. Even

an ankle that’s been hurting for months can be treated back to normal. Settling for pain of any kind in the foot and ankle isn’t necessary. Let us know if you want us to address a chronic ankle problem.

Vic Fiore—A ‘Remodel’ Citizen Who Brings Home Visions to Life

Many would agree with the old cliché, “There’s no place like home.” And many would also agree that most homes could use a bit of help. Whether it’s replacing siding, remodeling a kitchen, or finishing a basement, Vic Fiore and his team at Magnolia Home Remodeling are here to help.

Vic Fiore partnered with his brother-in-law Chris Fontana back in 1996, to get the ball rolling. Both gained valuable knowledge early in the game, as Fontana’s dad was an operations specialist at Con Edison; and Fiore has been around the family business since he was 13-yearsold. Throughout high school and college he gained working experience in home remodeling and feels that nothing is better than “on the job experience.”

Fiore studied at Rutgers University and graduated with a BA in Economics. “Business interested me, and it led me to this,” he said. Well versed in many phases of construction, Fiore shared that remodeling homes was at the top of his list when it came to potential careers. “I’m very happy with the decision to be involved in this business,” he said.

Now, with over two decades in the industry, Fiore enjoys taking a project from concept from start to finish. In order to help a client create his/her vision, Fiore explains that it’s all about having a stellar team that makes the process successful.

He said, “We have consultants and project managers that understand our clients needs, goals, and budget…They work towards a proposal that can check all these boxes

and bring the project to successful completion. Permits, working towards an approved design, selecting materials, several walk throughs…Everyone understands from the beginning what the goals are. We learn what people are looking for. We have the whole package and we’re looking to build relationships with people. A large portion of our base is repeat clients.”

Though sometimes clients prefer aggressive timelines, Fiore and his team presents realistic completion dates. “We explain from the beginning that each task requires a reasonable time frame, form each phase to be succesful. We can approach it from a standpoint. If there are delays or changes, we let them know. We’re good about finishing jobs on time, and even ahead of schedule. The feedback people give us is that they are impressed with how efficiantly we complete. Its difficult to speed up a project and maintain quality. We want to minimalize stress and work carefully so attempting to get something done in a shortened time frame is never a good recipe.” Nevertheless, Fiore prides himself in that his team often finishes ahead of schedule.

When it comes to home transformations, many homeowners might be concerned about budget, but Fiore feels that even a small tweak such as new siding or a new walkway can create a refreshing vibe. “It just makes you feel good every time you pull up to your driveway,” he said.

Or remodeling your kitchen could also amp up the atmosphere. “A new kitchen with an updated layout, beautiful cabinetry, that really brings a lot of value,” Fiore expressed. “Little things you can do to make the house look

better without spending a fortune.”

However, if sacrificing quality for the final product, it may be better to wait until budget meets expectations. If a potential client needs another six months to be able to spend more money, that’s what Fiore’s team sometime encourages people to do.

Magnolia Remodeling also offers a finance program that allows people to do more work than they normally would and pay monthly. “That’s a nice feature not every continued on page 40

Home Design Trends 2023

According to Fiore, multiple colors and tones is a trend that seems to be continuing. “We recently completed a

project in Watchung with matte black and gold appliances against white wood and stained cabinetry,” he said. “People are taking risks and choosing exciting color combinations.”

Moving forward, Fiore’s vision for Magnolia Home Remodeling is to continue to grow organically. “We have

a strong customer base,” he said. “We’re grateful to have the basis of customers we have and the opportunity we’re given.”

Rejected! What to Do if Your E-filed Tax Return is Rejected by the IRS

More than 90% of individual tax returns are now filed electronically, and usually the process goes smoothly. When an e-filed tax return is rejected, however, e-filing can become more complicated.

Common causes for rejected tax returns

Simple filing errors. Most rejections are caused by things such as misspellings, typos on Social Security numbers, or missing forms. When an e-filed tax return is rejected, the IRS e-filing system sends back rejection codes. These codes are specific to lines on the tax return and descriptions of the problem are readily available. Most of these errors can be easily corrected.

Dependent errors. This error occurs when someone else has claimed a dependent on a previously filed tax return. This often occurs with divorced and unmarried couples who each claim the same child on their tax return. The IRS does not take sides in this situation, they simply accept the earlier-filed return and reject any subsequent returns.

Identity fraud. Someone else has already filed a tax return using your Social Security number.

What to do

Most errors are simple and easily corrected, which paves the way for resubmitting your tax return for e-filing without much additional delay. However there are two instances that require your immediate attention. When either of these occur, you may need to file your tax return via physical mail and work to correct the error for future tax filings:

1.) Dependent errors. A dependent can only be claimed on one tax return. If a dependent is already claimed on another individual’s tax return you will need to provide proof that the dependent belongs on your return. If this happens, contact the other party who claimed your dependent

and ask them to amend their return. Let them know that you’re filing your tax return correctly claiming the dependent. Your filing will target both tax returns for a potential IRS audit. This audit risk often is enough motivation to correct the problem.

2.) Identity Fraud. Criminals using stolen information submit tax returns electronically in an effort to steal your tax withholdings. Fraudulently claimed refunds are then automatically deposited into thieves’ bank accounts. Unfortunately, you may discover the theft when your e-filed tax return is rejected. If this happens to you: File a paper tax return.

Include Form 14039: Identity Theft

Affidavit with your tax return.

Confirm your identity using the IRS Identity Verification Service or by calling the IRS.

Mail your tax return using Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested so you are certain of timely delivery.

Immediately take steps to protect your financial information. The following link will take you to the Federal Trade Commission’s identity theft area for recommended steps to protect yourself: FTC Identity Theft Assistance

While solving the cause for a rejected e-filed tax return can be a headache, the sooner the problem is addressed, the sooner your refund can be received.
