Local Women Participate In Miss America Organization Preliminaries
By Elsie Walker heir platforms included fighting homelessness and helping victims of domestic abuse. They were passionate about these causes and shared what they have already done to help others. However, they are not candidates for office, but young women who hope to be part of making a brighter tomorrow. For many, that is one reason why they were competing in the Triple Crown pageant, a preliminary to the Miss Jersey and Miss New Jersey’s Outstanding Teen Pageants. As queens, it would give them a chance to get the word out about their platforms. Three local women were among those who vied for crowns on Aug. 6 at the Masonic Lodge in Budd Lake. When the competition was over, crowned as queens were Jessica Indio, Miss Tri-County of Hammonton; Emily Cooney, Miss Tri-County Outstanding Teen, of Mantua Township; Rachelle Le Grand, Miss Gateway of Morganville; and Cianna Winkler, Miss Gateway Outstanding Teen of Verona. Executive directors of the pageants are Sharon Rosequist,

Miss Tri-County, and Kerry Milone-Clapp, Miss Gateway. Both live in Netcong and they are mother and daughter. In addition to winning the crown as Miss Gateway’s Outstanding Teen, Winkler also won the talent portion of the competition. A junior at Verona High School, Winkler did a lyrical dance to “Not About Angels” from the movie, “The Fault in Our Stars.” This was Winkler’s third year competing in the Miss America pageant system. Winkler said that she got involved in competing to gain confidence and that benefits of the pageants include doing the interviews which help to build life skills and “you meet wonderful girls out there.” Winkler’s platform is “Thinking Outside the Box: Creating Awareness for Child Homelessness. She has participated in Cardboard Box Cities and will be running one in November. She explained that a Cardboard Box City is where youth spend a night sleeping outside in cardboard boxes. It has been done at her church, the First Presbyterian Church in Verona. The boxes are located near the street so people can see them as they pass by and this raises awareness of the issue of homelessness. Water and food are proved by strangers, much in the way the homeless survive. Winkler is also involved with assembling and providing bags of toiletries that people can give out to any homeless people they meet. Although she did not walk away with a teen crown, Abbe Rodriguez, of Budd Lake, was recognized the People's Choice winner. “The audience votes for their favorite girl and she won that award. There was no prize, other that the confidence booster for her since this is her first time ever competing,” said Milone-Clapp. A junior at Mt. Olive High School, Rodriguez’s interest in the pageant started years earlier at her old elementary school, when a friend shared that she wanted to do it. That stuck in the back of Rodriguez’s mind. Then one day she saw MiloneClapp at her high school in a Miss America shirt. That rekindled Rodriguez’s interest. Rodriguez’s platform is homelessness. She is involved with the Homeless Bus Inc. which goes into Manhattan on Saturday nights with sandwiches, socks, blankets, and personal care items for the homeless. Rodriquez is also a Girl Scout and will be working toward her Gold Star award soon. “I’m not here to get a crown; I’m here to learn,” said Rodriguez when asked why she was in the pageant. She said that she was also there to meet new people. She feels that

learning and meeting new people are two benefits of competing. For her talent, Rodriguez sang “Cups” from the movie, “Pitch Perfect.” The 2015 Warren County Queen of the Fair, Jessica Ervey of Hackettstown competed in the Miss pageants. It was her first time competing in the Miss America organization. After winning the fair crown, people encouraged her to compete in the Miss program. For talent, Ervey did a jazz dance number to Justin Timerlake’s “Like I Love You.” Ervey’s platform was Hope Garden for Domestic Abuse. It started with her work for her Girl Scout Gold Star Award. She created a garden at a center for abused women. A farmer, the Centenary College student helps victims who have been trodden down and lost self-esteem, to tend the garden and grow vegetables. Through this garden, the women learn many things; one is that “They can still grow, just like the continued on next page

continued from front page garden,” said Ervey. Putting together the pageants and working with the contestants is a great deal of work, and both Rosequist and her daughter Milone– Clapp have done it for year. They seem to have a passion for it. “The reason I do this is because I really enjoy meeting and working with the girls,” said Milone-Clapp. “It is really amazing to watch them grow and develop their confidence. I have seen the deep friendships that are formed between the girls and it extends to the directors and the parents. I have met some truly wonderful people and I hope to continue so that my own daughters can see these amazing young women as role models
as they grow up. Milone-Clapp had become a director after being involved in the pageant system by helping her mom. “We are involved in this pageant system in order to help young women achieve their dreams, whatever those dreams may be,” added Rosequist. “These young ladies enter these pageants in order to win scholarship monies to further their education. We work with the girls once they are crowned to hone their interview skills, and help to give them to build their self-confidence.” She said that “They [title winners] receive the crown, embroidered sash, $200 scholarship, and we pay their way to Miss New Jersey [pageant].”

Cedar Grove Students And Parents Excited For New Changes This School Year
By Brianna Kudisch xciting changes are up ahead for Cedar Grove students, starting this September for the new school year. Not only will students walk into recently renovated areas of both their high school, middle school, and two elementary schools, but there will be additional changes in the mathematics programs. The first major change set to affect students is the largescale construction project. With the referendum for the project passed in 2014, work began in March of this year. Officials plan to have it completed by Sept. 1, in time for the first day of the school on Sept. 12. The project focuses on rebuilding major aspects of a student’s day to day activities. There will be all new bathrooms put in at the high school, along with a refurbished auditorium and expanded parking, making way for 35 new spots. Additional changes are set to highly impact the athletic department, with a new track and field, bleachers, press box, and new tile flooring, lockers and showers in both girl’s and boy’s locker rooms.
Mike Featherman, superintendent of Cedar Grove schools and supervisor of the construction project, commented on the positive reception from community members. “The reaction has been one of excitement and anticipation,” he said. “They can’t wait to send their kids to school or come watch a game.” The $14.8 million project will be paid for by the taxpayers of Cedar Grove, with a modest increase in taxes, totaling approximately $200 for the year. The raise will be seen in effect for next year. “The community, as a whole, will benefit from these [renovated] facilities,” said Featherman, who compared a school district to the epicenter of a town, illuminating the restoration as advantageous for all of Cedar Grove. In addition to the renovations, Cedar Grove students will also experience a change in the way they learn, specifically in the re-working of the mathematics program. The new program, titled “Go Math!” aligns with the Common Core standards, allowing teachers to plan lessons that are centrally
focused on the students’ learning, maximizing learning potential. Janine Barboza, K-12 math and science supervisor and co-director of the curriculum, emphasized the notion of student-led discoveries, illustrated through investigation and exploration. “The middle and high school teachers have been encouraged to create lessons where the students are deriving their own formulas and patterns, and they [the students] are driving the class a little bit more,” said Barboza, “as opposed to a traditional classroom.” The teachers will attend lengthy sessions at Conquer Mathematics, the learning center owned by Nancy Schultz, with the goal of improving both learning and teaching methods, to better help their students succeed. In terms of financial increase, Barboza explained that any time a district adopts a new program, there is a cost involved. However, she noted that the district has set aside a sizable amount of money, larger than it formerly has done in the past, to support the specific professional development program
of math. The end goal of this program is to help students learn more effectively, utilizing their own ability to solve problems and become more independent. “We want these students to persevere through problems [and] be able to pull from a number of resources and experiences to do work independently,” said Barboza. “When the students create something themselves, when they discover something themselves, they take ownership over the material and over the process that they’re using, and it’s going to stick with them.”

Hundreds Of Children Shop Cost-Free At NCJW/Essex Back 2 School Store
alls completely lined with new patterned backpacks, rows of brand new sneakers, and racks and racks of clothing – this was the scene at the National Council of Jewish Women, Essex County Section (NCJW/Essex) Back 2 School Store on Sun., July 31. The Back 2 School Store, in its eighth year, outfitted more than 700 economically disadvantaged children and utilized 470 volunteers. The children were able to shop cost-free for brand new attire, school supplies and personal care items, encouraging a well-equipped and confident start to the new school year. The day began with a ribbon cutting ceremony for dignitaries and supporters of the store. This year’s Back 2 School Store would not have been possible without major support from more than 50 donors including individuals, foundations and corporations. “The Back 2 School Store is one of the most amazing volunteer-led events I’ve ever seen,” commented Barbara Levadi of Livingston, who volunteered as a personal shopper. “It’s a fantastic day; so many children, so many volunteers, so well planned, everyone in good moods and working hard to bring on success for these children.” The store was opened to a long line of excited children, eager to enter the store and pick out brand new outfits which included pants, shirts, winter coats, sneakers, gloves, socks, undergarments and hats. The children, referred by
more than 30 social service agencies, were greeted by their own personal shoppers and then the children and volunteers began their shopping excursions. First stop: a hallway of colorful new backpacks! Then each child received a warm welcome into the 4,000 sq foot space, hosted at B’nai Shalom in West Orange. By the end of the spree, each child had a big bag of clothing in tow and a backpack filled with personal care items and school supplies. “I just saw a little girl spin around and look in the mirror with a huge smile after trying on her new clothes,” said NCJW/Essex member Brooke Lefferts of Maplewood, who has volunteered at the Back 2 School Store since its inception. “We made her day and she is going to wear her newly picked out outfit on the first day of school. Every year I am amazed by the organization and the heart from NCJW/Essex and all the volunteers." While the children “shopped” inside the store, parents and caregivers browsed the Gaelen Family Resource Center to pick up health and social service information from many different exhibitors. With shoes that fit just right and smiles from ear to ear, the children exited the store and were reunited with their parents and guardians. “This has been the best day of my entire life,” exclaimed one child as he departed the store.
A young shopper shows off her new backpack that she selected at the NCJW/Essex Back 2 School Store.

Reverend Appreciates Openness Between Denominations And Service With Outdoor Mass
By Anastasia Marchese ev. Jerry Racioppi came to the Church of the Holy Spirit in Verona about a year ago after serving as the seminarian and deacon at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Montclair. He is relatively new to the ministry, having been ordained in June of 2015. Previously, Racioppi had a full and busy career in the hotel industry, working in human resources. “People ask me if I [changed careers] because I was unhappy, but that wasn't it,” he says. “I really enjoyed my work.” Coming from a Roman Catholic background, Racioppi chose the Episcopal Church for his place of ministry, but received his masters of Divinity from Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, which is a Methodist seminary. He did, however, need to take one semester of classes at the General Episcopal Seminary in NYC. After having worked in the city for 13 years, he was glad to be able to complete
most of his training close to home. The commute was something he was glad to not have to carry over from his previous career. He is pleased by the openness between denominations that has developed and his own training in the ministry is illustrative of the growing ecumenical relationship between churches. He remembers that as a child growing up, being open to other denominations wasn’t something he considered. Now, there is a lot of communication and cooperation between churches. Racioppi is a Verona native and considers it a privilege to “come back to my home town as rector.” During his time serving at St. Luke’s, there was a regular practice of having worship services outside during the summer months. The services were called “Worship without Walls,” and were held at different locations throughout Montclair. Sometimes held at a park, or a parking lot, or the church lawn, the services
provided a different type of worship experience while also increasing visibility in the community, opening more than their
doors to the community, but bringing the worship to the community in an informal continued on next page

Outdoor Mass...
continued from previous page way. During Racioppi’s first summer at Church of the Holy Spirit he brought the practice of outdoor worship with him, calling it “Mass on the Grass.” The church offered outdoor worship every Sunday evening last year during the summer at 5 p.m. at different locations, but this year decided to “keep it simple and just be outside in nature.” This summer the worship time continues to be at 5 p.m., and the services are held at the same location each week, on the church property. “It is just logistically simpler on our front lawn,” he says. “It’s gone really well. There is lots of shade, so it works even with the ridiculous humidity we have been having.” The turnout for the services sort of determines the nature of the service. If there are children in attendance, then Racioppi encourages them to take part in the service. If he knows that the people who have
come enjoy singing then he will incorporate more singing into the service. The church’s other services continue throughout the summer as well, with an 8 a.m. Mass and then another at 9:30 a.m. During the autumn, winter and spring, the later service incorporates the choir and organ whereas the earlier one is more of a contemplative service. Also, on the third Sunday of the month, there is a Children's Eucharist, which is more of a teaching Eucharist. Sunday school is held during the first half of the 9:30 service, so the children are downstairs, but come up to the sanctuary for the Eucharist. On the Children’s Sunday, Racioppi takes the opportunity to teach more about the elements and symbolism of the service. The last Mass on the Grass for this summer season will be held on Aug. 28. All are welcome to attend. In the chance of rain services can still be held outside as there is an open air area with a roof at the church. More information can be found at www.holyspiritverona.org.

Learn Hands-On-History At Waterloo Village On Saturdays
he Canal Society of New Jersey, in concert with the New Jersey DEP, is continuing its Waterloo Canal Heritage Days series on Saturdays offering Morris County visitors to nearby Waterloo Village in Sussex County a glimpse of the region’s early days – as part of an every other Saturdays series this summer and early fall. The programs, which are altered a bit on each of the Heritage Days Saturdays, include hands-on history programs, a taste of original music, plus a narrated boat ride on the historic Morris Canal. Once a bustling inland port on the Morris Canal, Waterloo retains its character as a 19th Century canal Waterloo Village town. Since 2007, the Canal Society has gradually opened industrial and commercial buildings to interpret trades that were common throughout the 19 th Century. Waterloo Village is managed by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry within the state Department of Environmental Pro-

tection and is located in Allamuchy Mountain State Park. DEP’s Division of Parks and Forestry assumed stewardship of the Village in 2007 after the Waterloo ArtsFoundation, which had leased the Village from the state for about 40 years, went bankrupt. DEP has committed more than $600,000 to the Village’s restoration as part of its Sustainable Park Plan, an initiative designed to keep historic sites and state parks open by expanding programming and events to attract more residents and revenue. DEP has worked with The Canal Society of New Jersey, Friends of Waterloo, and Winakung at Waterloo to support the Village and its programming. Waterloo Village Heritage Days run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are scheduled for Sat. Aug. 27, Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 8, and Oct. 22. Waterloo Village is located in Stanhope. For more information on Waterloo Village, visit http://www.getoutsidenj.com/listings/Waterloo-Village.Stanhope.

any people worry about giving to charity. They are concerned about where their money is going and how much money is spent on advertising or administrative costs. They want to be sure that their donation is used wisely. Charity Navigator is one of the most reliable sources for evaluating charities and once again, for the sixth year in a row they have given Morris Habitat for Humanity their highest score. A letter from Ken Berger, Charity Navigator’s president & CEO, announced the honor. MPAC Wins 2016 Outstanding Historic Theatre Award
ayo Performing Arts Center has been named 2016 Outstanding Historic Theatre by The League of Historic American Theatres (LHAT). President and CEO Allison Larena and General Manager Ed Kirchdoerffer accepted the award at LHAT’s annual conference on Sun., July 17 in Chicago. The conference is the largest gathering of historic theatre professionals in North America. “It is an honor to be recognized by a distinguished group of peers who work to make historic theatres vital economic engines, community gathering places, and arts and educational centers in the towns we serve,” Larena said. LHAT’s Awards Program inspires excellence by recognizing theatres and individuals for their significant accomplishments or distinguished service. The Outstanding Historic Theatre Award recognizes a theatre that demonstrates excellence through its community impact, quality of programs and services, and quality of the restoration or rehabilitation of its historic structure. An award-winning theatre will have demonstrated excellence through significant achievement, the impact of its services and breadth of populations served, and the length of time and/or intensity of its activities. Each year, one theatre and one individual are honored by LHAT at its annual conference. Former winners include the Fabulous Fox in
Atlanta, New York City Center and Playhouse Square in Cleveland. “Mayo Performing Arts Center beat out an impressive list of nominees to claim this award this year,” said LHAT President and CEO Ken Stein. “There are a great number of historic theatres doing great work across the country. The community of Morristown should be very proud of MPAC’s accomplishments.” Larena added, “We share this honor with the thousands of community members who worked tirelessly, and continue to work tirelessly, to build, support and improve this venue that has brought so much joy to countless individuals for the past 80 years. We know that our work today will continue to inspire future generations to sustain MPAC as a vital performing arts center and the cultural center of our community.” MPAC, built in 1937 as The Community Theatre by Walter Reade, is recognized for its impact and leadership in the New Jersey arts community in scope and diversity of programming, community outreach and arts education. The rich history of Morristown revolves around community organizations, in which the Theatre has been central as a longstanding community gathering place since it first opened its doors. MPAC presents more than 200 events annually, with more than 200,000 patrons, free concerts and

Did You Know?
ccording to the World Health Organization, tobacco kills up to half its users, annually killing roughly six million people each year. The WHO notes that more than five million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use, while more than 600,000 deaths can be attributed to nonsmokers being exposed to secondhand smoke. While many in the United States may understand the threat that smoking poses to their overall health, the WHO notes that studies indicate knowledge about the specific health risks of tobacco use is not widespread. A 2009 survey of smokers in China found that less than 40 percent of smokers knew that smoking tobacco causes coronary heart disease, while only 27 percent were aware of
the link between smoking and stroke. It’s also important that smokers recognize that cigarettes once characterized as “light” or “low tar” are not healthier than more traditional cigarettes. While the US Food and Drug Administration has banned the use of such terms in cigarette sales within the United States, smokers traveling or living overseas should be mindful that other countries may not operate under such restrictions. In addition, the American Cancer Society notes that there is no proof that cigarettes sold as “all natural” and marketed as having no chemicals or additives are any safer than traditional cigarettes and that the best way for men, women and children to avoid the dangers of tobacco is to never smoke or to quit immediately.

eet Bandit from Eleventh Hour Rescue. Bandit is a playful Pointer/ Labrador Retriever mix who is about four years old. He has impeccable manners both inside and outside and will steal anyone’s heart with one glance. He is an active dog who likes to walk and sniff, and one of his favorite activities is hiking. He is strong on a leash but walks well with a harness. Bandit is a smart and affectionate dog who at one time lived with three small children and loved them very much. They love to play with each other, enjoy ear scratches and cuddle up for naps and bedtime. They are up to date with shots and are about four months old.
