Jamie Pinaire’s 5K Race And Fun Run Helps Kids Reach Goals

By Anastasia Marchese he first annual Jamie Pinaire’s 5K and one mile Fun Run, held on Sat., June 3, at Chatham High School, will support scholarships to students to continue the legacy of a beloved teacher gone to soon. The proceeds from race day went directly to the James A. Pinaire III Foundation. The Pinaire Foundation began in 2015 and is a non-profit started by Joan and Jim Pinaire after the tragic death of their son, Jamie, in a car accident in December of 2014. Jamie had been on the way home from Saturday classes at the Robert Treat Academy where he was an algebra and seventh grade homeroom teacher. “The minute he got there, he really fell in love with the school,” remembers Joan. “He found his place, if you will. He became involved in the after school activities, really

found his calling. He made a huge impact during his short time at the school.” Pinaire had started teaching at the Robert Treat Academy in the fall of 2015. The Academy is a K-eight Charter School located in Newark. According to the school’s mission statement, it is founded on the principles of “high academic standards, socially

acceptable behavior and the recognition that all individuals are created equal and must be given an equal educational opportunity.” The school has been recognized as a Reward School by the Department of Education, as well as numerous other designations of excellence. The Pinaire Foundation was formed to recognize students at the Robert Treat Academy and to help them bridge the financial gap by providing scholarships to help them afford their secondary education. The Foundation has continued to support students from the Robert Treat Academy, in order to continue Pinaire’s legacy. The first scholarship was awarded in June of 2015 to a former student of Pinaire.

The award was initially based on teacher recommendations, but this year was the first that students applied to be considered for the scholarships. The Foundation hopes to offer scholarships to students from other schools in the future as well. At the recent 5K and Fun Run, Joan estimated that somewhere around $20,000 was raised to continue the Foundation’s work. The 5K course lead through the Rocky Hills neighborhood of Chatham whereas the Fun Run took place on the grass course located completely on the school’s grounds. Kyle Brogan, who was a 2008 Chatham High graduate along with Pinaire, was continued on page 3

First Library Program Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary

By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta irst Library, founded by Morristown resident, Catherine Tinger Goldberg, is celebrating its 10th year anniversary and the party will be held soon at The Chatham Library. The party was originally set for June 5, but was cancelled due to lack of signups. But they will reschedule on a weekend to draw more people. “Twenty signed up and I was looking for 50,” said Goldberg, as she wants to make it a big party with food, Lulu the Clown, David Warner Photography, face painting, balloons, and crafts for children. When First Library had their launch 10 years ago,

there were 150 attendees at the Chatham Library. “There were less working mothers,” said Goldberg, who had been a Chatham resident for 30 years prior to recently moving to Morristown. First Library was created by Goldberg in January 2007. The idea is that a child would receive a book per month from the time they are newborn until age five – which would mean 60 books total. Then Goldberg began researching ways to implement such a program on a larger scale and discovered the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program, which was created by Parton in 1996 for Sevier Country children in her native Tennessee. In Parton’s

program, each child registered in the Imagination Library program received a book each month until age of five, paid by Parton’s Dollywood Foundation. Goldberg has since become an affiliate of the program. “She [Parton] chooses the books with a group of professionals,” said Goldberg. My job is to find the parents and as a sponsor, I pay for the books. It’s a nice program. It’s in 48 states, the U.K., and Canada.” First Library is the first and only fully operational Dolly Parton Imagination Library affiliate in New Jersey. The mission of Goldberg’s First Library is to promote early childhood continued on page 3

Play Unified Continues Thru School Year With Social And Athletic Activities

P

By Stefanie Sears lay Unified is a program that seeks to join those both with and without intellectual disabilities through social events and athletics to develop friendship and understanding among all individuals. Chatham has had its own chapter, consisting of students from Chatham High School (CHS) and Education Careers & Lifelong Communities (ECLC) of New Jersey, for the past six years. The members range from CHS freshman to seniors and ECLC students from 14 to 21 years old. Christine Cavallo, a special education teacher at CHS, is a huge part of the club’s origins. “My second year teaching at Chatham I coached freshman soccer and one

girl on my team, Olivia Perlmutter, asked in me in August before pre-season ended if I could advise this club she wanted to start because her twin sister had Down Syndrome and it would be the first year, now that she was going off to high school, she and her would be going to separate schools. Her sister was going to ECLC and she was going to the high school. Her sister was upset because not only was she not going to be with her sister, she was also not going to be with her friends and peers that she had been with all throughout her years of education. She was upset, so her sister’s solution to it was ‘Let me create this club where I can bring the students of ECLC and Chatham High School togeth-

er.’ She came up with these ‘activity nights’ and the club would be called ‘Teens Connecting with Teens.’” Cavallo also channels her passion for Play Unified from personal reasons. “I grew up really close to my first cousin, Kelli, who is only three years younger than me,” Cavallo explains. “She has Down Syndrome and is the most amazing woman I know. I would volunteer at the Special Olympics practices and attend her events throughout the years. She is still really active in Special Olympics. My relationship with her is what guided me into being a special education teacher.” Perlmutter took matters into her own hands by already gaining permission from administration and the ECLC principal. They

began holding their activity nights in the ECLC gym that October 2011. The students also have pen pals between schools and ran a booth at a CHS carnival together, but the activity nights remain the club’s highlight. They are held at ECLC once a week for four weeks in the fall and four weeks in the spring and run from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. “The objective for the night is for everyone to have a blast hanging out and being with one another,” says Cavallo, “Each night has a fun theme that dictates the attire for the evening and there is everything from dancing and singing to art projects/crafts, sports, games, and just hanging out. In winter of 2014, so in our third year, we started

With Connolly’s United Bowling Team becoming a success, they then prepared for their very first event: competing in the Special

Olympics New Jersey for the Shriver Cup last year. “We went down to New Brunswick to where the tournament was held and it was such a bigger scale event than we ever thought,” says Cavello. “There were schools from all over the state. It was really fun. The kids all competed, and then at the end of it, they call everyone up and you get gold, silver, different medals. We just had a

We definitely want to push forward with this.’” Cavallo and Fay applied for and received a Play Unified Grant from the U.S. Department of Education, N.J. Department of Education, and PSEG Foundation so that the two schools

could form an official Special Olympics N.J. Play Unified School Partnership. From this, the club has also organized teams for Unified Soccer, Unified Basketball, United Kickball, United Softball, and take part in these and other activities for Respect Week, their most recent and final event of the school year. “Special Olympics really seemed so excited and so supportive of this possi-

ble connection between the both schools and getting them into unified sports,” says Cavallo. Their Play United teams have competed in other Special Olympic N.J. tournaments. For example, the Unified Soccer Team, coached by Fay, played in the Unified Soccer Shriver Cup Championship in Mercer County Park in late October 2016 and the Basketball Shriver Cup at Princeton University in April, where the Princeton University players gave their students silver medals due to the close game. This year at the Shriver Cup Unified Bowling Tournament back in March, one of their United Bowling Teams won the gold medal and their first trophy. “This student led club

envisions itself as a vehicle that will provide students with more and more inclusive activities that meet various student interests,” says Cavello. “We would love to have the students at CHS more throughout the year! We found that having the students of ECLC here at CHS during Respect Week was so special and we really want it to happen more. Some other programs/ thought are unified student art club, unified field day, unified robotics, guitar club, gardening club.” Play Unified is now in its ninth year nationally and seventh year in N.J. Millburn, Randolph, Madison, and Ridge High are other New Jersey institutions that have joined the Play Unified movement.

Preschoolers Enjoy Outdoor Classroom Sensory Garden

By Stefanie Sears n the week of May 8, Chatham Methodist Preschool (CMP), an institution that services children from ages 18 months to six years, built an outdoor garden complete with a sensory garden. It was inspired by the lack of observation among the students. “We believe we are the only preschool in the area to create an outdoor space in which we can use as a classroom,” says Amy Crandall, Chatham Methodist Preschool director. “Children do not spend as much time outdoors. Children need time on a playground to build important muscles in their bodies to grow. When we ask children to journal or draw we have noticed that today children do not include as much detail in their pictures. During staff meetings, we have discussed ways in which we can encourage better observation, how to develop a love of learning in exploring and build confidence. We felt that the outdoor classroom really addressed a lot of children’s needs. I am not sure one person can take full credit, it really is a collaboration of all the teachers.” Crandall’s husband Bob built the garden and the children plant, learn how to manage a garden, and even make sure to feed the visiting birds. “We have tables and even a bird feeder. We are hoping the birds will enjoy our classroom when we are not in it,” says Crandall. The sensory garden is exactly what the name suggests. It gives the children a

chance to explore their five senses. However, it also offers several other educational observation opportunities. “A sensory garden is more of an interactive garden,” explains Crandall, “The children are involved in not only the planting of the garden and the upkeep, such as watering and weeding but can go in the garden to touch, see, smell, listen, and taste items in it. Some of the plants have unusual leaf coloring for observing. Children tend to think of a leaf as a green oval shape. We want to demonstrate the variety and interest in our world. We have plants then when rubbed feel like a lamb’s ear. There are plants that have leaves that repel water and bead up. “The garden is an opportunity to explore nature,” she explains. “But more than just a garden it is an outdoor classroom. We also have a bird feeder in our classroom space. There is a big planter filled with worms and dirt for exploring. We have a sandbox for shoveling and hiding treasures. There are small tables to sit and do an activity or have snack. The idea behind the space is that nature can be a wonderful classroom!” Crandall describes the sensory garden as the highlight of the outdoor classroom, but the school participated in the garden indoors as well, particularly focusing on insects, a preschooler’s favorite topic. For example, each class witnessed their own five caterpillars transform into butterflies and released them into the garden. In addition, the

school purchased ladybugs for the youngest class, Mother’s Morning Out, to relocate into the garden’s soil. The students from ages two to six dig in this soil and count, measure, compare, and do composting for worms in the worm garden. The garden arrived at the right time, considering current springtime and summer right around the corner. “We are always looking to extend the learning we do indoors,” she says. “Springtime is a wonderful time in a preschool. It is a reflective time where as teachers we look at the growth of each student and evaluate the skills they have accumulated over the year. Children that entered the start of the school year with some trepidation run into class and can’t wait to see what we have planned for the day. The garden has far exceeded our expectations already. The children have developed a whole new vocabulary.” STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) has already been incorporated into CMP’s curriculum for a majority of the school’s existence and now the outdoor classroom incorporates a sandbox that enhances the school’s STEM activities. “Our school motto is Learn, Play and Grow,” says Crandall. “We believe each child will grow in self-confidence by exploring his or her unique strengths in our well-equipped facilities with our dedicated, nurturing teaching staff. Our students experience the joy that comes with discovery and learning. Each day the children come to school, we have a variety of activities

for them to engage in. Our classrooms are designed to have lots of interest areas in which to play. Circle time with a variety of songs to sing and books to read. Projects to spark creativity, it has been a wonderful year of reflection on what we are doing well and how we can

become even better. We have spent some time asking our parent community about what they want in a preschool and we think we are delivering. The smiles on our students’ faces affirm our belief in learning through playing.” The outdoor classroom

was dedicated to the CMP’s former director, Sue Maher, in a special Outdoor Classroom Dedication event on June 3. The three and fouryear-old classes opened the ceremony by singing songs with Music Director Peter Hill. Pastor Jeff Markay continued on page 7

CHS Names Caring Student Of The Year

hatham High School senior Shannon Lamb was recently recognized by the Morris County Professional Counselors Association as Chatham High School’s “Caring Student of the Year.” Through the “Devoted To Children Foundation,” Shannon has traveled to Haiti, initiating an after-school tutoring program and a summer camp for the underprivileged children of that country. On her first trip to Haiti, Lamb’s service group focused on rebuilding a long wall at a school that is part of the D2C After-School Tutoring Program. They also painted the worn walls of the orphanage’s home. On her most recent service trip, Lamb helped to initiate the first-ever summer camp that the “Devoted to Children Foundation” has held. Approximately 80 children from Cayes-Jacmel participated in various activity stations through the camp. Activities included yoga, music, dance and paper mache. This coming summer, Lamb will help co-chair and organize the camp. She will also be running one of the classes at the camp, which will be a fitness-based activity. In reflecting on her ser-

vice experiences, Lamb said: “Realizing that not everyone has food on the table or parents to help, for that matter, is a big reality check for me. I find that putting myself in a situation where I’m able to experience firsthand the hardships that others face, I can more fully appreciate my own life. Once I met the kids at the orphanage in Haiti, I was able to make really strong connections with them because of so many years of studying French. Spending time with them over the course of my first volunteer trip, I formed strong bonds and it made me want to keep returning to help them. The relationships I have built in Haiti have significantly strengthened my

whom also went to the Chatham Methodist Preschool prior to when Maher was hired as director in July 2015. She was much appreciative for such a unique honor. “Sue’s leadership and dedication to CMP was

love for service work.” Lamb also volunteers at Kids Enrichment at Southern Boulevard School. “At SBS last year, I did the Kids Enrichment with the Programming class,’’ Lamb said. “Seeing the younger children get excited about using Code.org and other STEM-related things was great. As a student who loves math and science, it is great to see young kids, particularly girls, have the ability to foster their interest in those areas. This year I also did Kids Enrichment, but it was for a fashion design class, which was fun as well.” Lamb was honored at a recognition breakfast May 17 at Berkeley College’s Dover campus.

Mayor Curt Ritter, speaking on behalf of the committee, said: “We invite all families, seniors and young adults alike to join us this summer at The Colony Pool Club for what we expect will be another great summer. We continue to welcome new members and see increased membership numbers, following the many improvements and

special events we are now hosting at the Club.” This summer, standard fun events, such as movie nights, live music and the Adult Luau & Pig Roast will continue, he said. “The Colony Pool Club remains one of the best-kept secrets in Chatham Township, offering arguably the most affordable membership rates of any swim club in the area, with amenities and activities that are hard to beat,” he said. The club’s website highlights some of the amenities offered at The Colony Pool Club this summer, including approximately 30,000 square feet, or 850,000 gallons, of fresh water swimming, more than 8,300 square feet of soft beach sand, The Colony Café,

independently operated by the Fairmount Country Store and Hickory Tree Pizza; free Wi-Fi, diving boards, water slides, water basketball and volleyball, a swim team, and private and group swimming lessons. Also, members enjoy a half-court basketball court, tether ball, table hockey, ping pong, cornhole, KanJam, and ladder ball In addition, The Colony Pool Club has a robust calendar of new special events and social activities for families, seniors and young adults alike, including the Adult Luau & Pig Roast, Sunday night family barbecues, live music, movie nights on the beach, pre-teen and teen DJ parties, Float Days, a July 4 treasure hunt, sand castle

contests and the swim team. The Colony Pool Club Swim Team is a member of the North Jersey Summer Swim League. Its competitive swim team is a great way to have fun, get exercise and meet new friends. Swim lessons are based on the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Swim program and are taught by Red Cross certified club lifeguards. Registration is now open. Group swim lessons are offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings to children, age 4 and up, who are members. Colony Swag Club members will be able to show their Colony pride this summer with a selection of new apparel and summer items, which include t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, beach

towels, koolers, koozies, plastic cups, car magnets and more. Opening day is scheduled for May 27 and the

full summer schedule will begin June 26. Club hours can be found at www.thecolonypoolclub.org/aboutus/club-hours.

hatham High School senior Eric Davis earned an honorable mention in the Fourth Annual New York Times Student Editorial Contest. Out of 7,895 submissions, Davis’ essay made it to the final round, which means that his essay was in the top 70 submissions. In his essay, titled “Colleges Should Abandon Race-Based Affirmative Action to Achieve True Diversity.” Davis argues that colleges “completely ignore the importance of socioeconomic diversity,” in favor of “seeking an ethnically diverse campus,” and, as a result, “there are essentially as many students from families of the top one percent of household

income as the entire bottom 50 percent.” He argued, “It’s in the best interest of the entire nation for schools to work toward equality among their campuses in all senses of the definition,” because “the level of social inequality in this country has grown inconceivably, and the one beacon of hope for many - accessibility to higher education - appears to be far less attainable for working class families.” In response to his recognition, Davis said: “As an aspiring engineering student, I was completely surprised to see that my writing - of all things - was recognized as outstanding. I’ve never really given myself the chance to explore my capabilities in the

humanities outside of the classroom, and to be recognized by one of the most influential publications in the world was quite the honor.” He also said: “Writing this editorial has been more transformative than I would have ever expected. Throughout high school, I always thought that I wanted to pursue something continued on page 13

about ensuring that all students have access to higher education is so important. I commend Eric for taking on an issue as complex and as sensitive as economic inequality and finding a way to write about it in a compelling way that resonates for readers.”

Joe Korkuch, captain of the Chatham Emergency Squad, Inc., described to the audience the characteristics that make Crater EMT of the year. “We are proud to have him as a member and a friend,” said Korkuch. Crater has served the Chatham Emergency Squad for 16 years. He’s currently president of the squad and has also served as a finance vice president and personnel vice president. In these roles, Crater has had a great impact in many areas of CES’s operation and administration. He championed the creation of the squad’s scholarship program for high school seniors. In addition to his duties as president, Crater serves as the squad’s fund

Nevertheless, to recognize Sinha’s achievement during the 2016 cycle, the N.J.Water Environment Association invited her to give a speech during their annual convention in May in Atlantic City. This way, although each toilet costs about $450, the number of constructed toilets is maximized. More than 100 toilets have been built so far. The collaboration between Nishita and R.N. Sinha Foundation started in spring 2015, when Sinha was starting the project and visited the ancestral village in India to conduct a survey along with another family from her Chatham Girl Scout troop.
