That ’Ole Little Black Dress Magic Raises Awareness To Invisible Poverty

By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta he week of November 14, the Junior League of Morristown (JLM), partnered with Dress for Success Morris County, and the ShopRite of Greater Morristown, and kicked off its Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI). League members throughout Morris County wore one black dress for five days to illustrate the effects poverty can have on a woman’s access to resources, confidence, and opportunities. They also wore a pin that read, “Ask Me About My Dress,” to spark conversation and spread awareness of the initiative and its objectives. Participants then had the option to donate their worn black dress to Dress for Success of Morris County at the end of the initiative. Local dry cleaner, Cleaners Advantage, in Madison, offered its support by donating time to clean dresses. This campaign was necessary because as of 2014, Morris County has 5,145 children living under the Federal Poverty Guideline – which is $24,300 for a family of four, according to New Jersey Kids Count from Advocates for Children of New Jersey; #ALICE Report from the United Way. And the fair market rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Morris County is $1,280 per month. In order to afford this apartment, a household would need to

earn more than $51,000 per year. At the NJ minimum wage of $7.25 an hour in 2014, that adds up to 135 hours per week – 52 weeks per year, according to Family Promise Morris County. According to Mary Jean Barnes, executive director of Dress for Success, Morris County raised more than $12,000 from this campaign. “We’re all about empowering women to get back to work,” said Barnes. “Economic self-sufficiency is our mission. We were very excited to be a part of it.” Dress for Success, Morris County, is a not-for-profit organization. In addition to Morris, the organization serves women in nine other counties in Northern New Jersey: Bergen, Passaic, Essex, Somerset, Hunterdon, Sussex, Middlesex, Union, and Warren. Dress for Success provides professional attire, free of charge, through its boutique and Mobile Program, to women who are returning or entering the workforce. A volunteer personal shopper assists and provides fashion advice, guidance, and support. All clients are invited back for a second visit for additional business-appropriate apparel. In addition to fashion advice, there’s also career counseling. Clients can get personalized help from Career Center volunteers such as resume and cover letter

writing, interviewing techniques, online job search/occupational research, career coaching and skill enhancement. There are also professional women’s group monthly networking meetings that feature expert speakers on topics relating to professional and personal growth. Dinner and babysitting is provided free. The Walmart Foundation presents a Going Places Network which offers a 12-session seminar that helps underemployed and unemployed women build their professional skills, accelerate their job search and build confidence in a supportive environment. Topics include: organizing a job search, creating a competitive resume,

networking, building a social media career profile and developing strategies for success. In 2015, more than 1,100 women were served with approximately 600 reached by the Mobile Program. Dress for Success was referred to women by more than 100 local agencies including Homeless Solutions, Jersey Battered Women’s Service and Workforce NJ. Each client receives services for an entire year, valued at $1,000. Dress for Success receives no government funding. Grateful Family Dedicates Bench To Doctor

D

By Anastasia Marchese r. Albert Ritter was not planning on using his professional skills on that October afternoon in 2014 when he first met Michael DiMaggio. Ritter and his wife Janis Joseph were just out for a casual walk. “We were out walking our dog,” he said. “We were actually standing on the gas station property,” when a car struck Michael as he was walking home from school.

Michael, than 11 years old, was seriously hurt, as Ritter, who is an emergency room doctor, was quick to ascertain, “he has a broken arm and badly injured leg.” Ritter recalls that he was unsure if Michael’s leg could be saved. “The paramedics came but the driver was having a medical situation as well,” so another paramedic unit responded at Ritter’s request. He remembers holding Michael still to prevent him from moving his

neck. As he assessed Michael’s condition he spoke with him, informing him that he is a doctor and encouraging him to be calm. As is normal in trauma situations, Michael was unclear as to what had happened and the extent of his injuries. As Ritter spoke to him, he looked up into his eyes and asked, “Are you going to leave me?” Ritter assured him that he would not, and having that assurance helped Michael to stay calm despite his circumstances. Since that accident, Michael has had multiple surgeries and many blood transfusions. “Michael is an extraordinary young man,” said Ritter admiringly. Michael was in the hospital for months and months. According to Ritter, the community and family supported him, the hospital staff and his medical team “did a phenomenal job. Everything came together the way it is supposed to.” The DiMaggio family wanted to honor Ritter and his wife for their selfless acts of service. They had a bench placed on the sidewalk near the intersection of Main

Street and Hillside Avenue, where the accident took place. The bench bears a plaque with the words, “Dr. Al Ritter & Janis Joseph, Our Angels here on Earth.” When asked about the bench, Ritter was clearly honored. “It came very much as a surprise,” said Ritter. “The family is very appreciative, very appreciative.” He also stressed his admiration for Michael and his character, as well as his own appreciation for the DiMaggio family’s efforts to tangibly show their appreciation. One of the ways is through their annual Red Cross Blood Drive at the Chatham Fish & Game Club located at 41 Fairmount Ave. in Chatham. This is the third year that the drive will be held in honor of Michael DiMaggio. In 2014 Michael checked out of the hospital for the day to attend the first blood drive. Last year the drive had twice the amount of donors. This year the drive was set to be held on Dec. 11. The family was hoping for an even greater turnout, so that blood can be available to other patients in need of life saving blood.

American Philanthropist Maggie Doyne Speaks At Chatham High School

By Ainsley Layland or the past four years Chatham Education Foundation has been inviting speakers to the district to shine light for students, parents and the community on attributes that are sometimes overlooked in academia. These qualities however, still contribute to fulfilment and richness in life in ways that aren’t always measured conventionally. The featured speaker at Chatham High School on Wed., Nov. 30 was Mendham native, Maggie Doyne. In 2015 Doyne was awarded the CNN Heroes Award for her work educating children and building up a community in Nepal. During her time there she has built a children’s home, women’s center, and founded the Kopila Valley School where the students are often the first in their family to be educated. She is the adoptive mother of 50 children and recently dropped her oldest daughter off at college, where, Doyne said there were a lot of tears. She recently relocated her ‘home base’ to Chatham but grew up in Mendham and attended Mendham High School. At 18 years-old she was on track to attend college following graduation but woke up one morning with a change of heart that would affect the course of her life. “I’ll never forget [that] moment, I walked downstairs and I had pulled an all-nighter, and I just had this feeling and this knowing in my gut that if I went to college it would be for all the wrong reasons. I just felt like I needed to see more and do more,” Doyne said at the event Wednesday night. “I had been so focused on these goals and trying

to build this person that I didn’t even know anymore who I was on the inside.” Sitting in her biology class, Doyne heard her name called out over the loudspeaker. She reported to the guidance office for a spontaneous meeting with her counselor who was concerned about her decision to put off college for a year. “My guidance counselor looked me in the eye and she said, ‘You’re making the biggest mistake of your entire life.’ And this was the biggest mistake,” Doyne said. “All of us fall into this trap. We get stuck in the fear and the not knowing of what’s in front of us and thinking that we have to be this person, and do certain things, and become this person I’m meant to be. But that’s not always what brings joy and happiness and meaning. Sometimes the biggest mistake of your entire life could be the step that takes you to where you are meant to be.” Her message to the audience was less about her break from the expectations of society and more about the importance of being true to oneself. Her decision to travel be-

fore going to college ultimately lead her to what she says is her life’s calling. “I have a nice little home base for me and the kids [here in Chatham] when they’re here on student exchange programs and while I’m here and there,” Doyne said. “I’ve never felt more safe, more welcome, or more loved. We’re very, very lucky to live here.”

Chicago Tribute Band Performs At Chatham High School Benefit

A

By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta bout 200 listeners came out on Fri., Dec. 2, to see Beginnings, a New York-based Chicago tribute band perform in the Chatham High School auditorium. The special performance was in conjunction with the Chatham High School Music Department efforts to subsidize cost of the May 2017 Disney performance trip, benefitting the CHS band, chorus, and orchestra students. The fundraiser truly meant a lot to Beginnings bassist and singer, Mason Swearingen, who said the band’s humble beginnings started with high school bands. “I played trombone,” he said. “A number of guys learned their instruments through their high school band. Our drummer as well. It’s definitely a place we all

started out; we’re definitely happy to be helping out with this fundraiser.” And younger people seem to be no strangers to the music of Chicago, as Swearingen said that playing outdoors throughout the summer, a lot of younger people are spotted in the audience. Beginnings have been together since 2002, performing hits by the legendary pop-rock group, Chicago, such as, “Saturday in the Park,” “Colour My World,” “Feeling Stronger Every Day,” “No Tell Lover,” “Wishing You Were Here,” and, of course, “Beginnings.” Swearingen has been a fan of Chicago since he was a kid. He joined Beginnings shortly after it was put together, knowing members from various bands. “It’s such fantastic music,” he said. “So continued on next page

The other guys feel the same.” Swearingen said that Peter Paul Cetera, American singer, songwriter, and bassist best known for being an original Chicago member, counts as a big influence in his musical career, as well as Robert William Lamm, an American keyboardist, singer, songwriter and founding member of Chicago. And as a singer, Swearingen said he’s very much influenced by Steve Perry and Lou Graham. “We’re very influenced from everybody from The Rolling Stones to jazz,” he said. Another motivator was growing up in a musical household. Swearingen said, “My father played guitar and bass. My mother enjoyed singing. I’m very lucky they get to see me throughout the year; we travel so much.” For years Beginnings played for audiences all over the country. Some of their

When Swearingen isn’t performing with Beginnings, he’s with his other band, Almost Famous, playing music of the 1970s and 1980s. He also works for a company in Rockefeller Center as a video producer/ editor. “It’s a cool gig to have,” he said. CHS Music Department Sets Up Online Campaign For Spring Trip

he Chatham High School Music department has enjoyed a long tradition of performances throughout the community. From High Point Stadium to Carnegie Hall, they’ve brought home the accolades and are a great source of pride to the Chathams. After practicing hard and performing for many, they are going to Disney World. On May 18, the CHS Bands, Choruses, and Orchestras will begin a four-day adventure

as they travel to Orlando, Fla. for performances and workshops with Disney cast members and musicians. Each attending student will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform and experience Disney and Universal Studios with their peers. The all-inclusive trip comes with a price tag of $1,300 per student. Every year, students participate in a variety of fundraising activities which help offset their travel

expenses. As this trip comes with a higher price tag than previous years, the CHS music staff is jumping on board to sponsor several additional fundraising events intended to benefit the entire population of attending students. The music department has set up a GoFundMe campaign as another way to help raise some money to defray the cost of the

Coat Drive Helps Local People In Need Stay Warm

N

early 50 million Americans are currently living in poverty. For these families and individuals, a warm coat is a budget extra they simply cannot afford. St. Paul’s Day School in Westfield invites area residents to make a difference in neighbor’s lives by donating coats and dollars during our upcoming coat drive! Chatham High School Key Club is working with One Warm Coat to collect clean, gently used warm coats, and dollars to support the coat drive program until Dec. 22 between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the CHS main lobby. Drop off extra coats and Chatham High School Key Club takes care of the rest. All donated coats will be given to a local agency for distribution to local children and adults in need. For those who do not have a coat to donate, help provide a warmer winter by texting “WARM” to 80100 to donate $10 to One Warm Coat or by visiting www.onewarmcoat.org/donate. “For more than 20 years we have been working to provide a warm coat to anyone

who needs one,” said Jennifer Stockard, president and chief executive officer of One Warm Coat. “We are so thankful for our many coat drive ambassadors, like Chatham High School Key Club, who volunteer their time, resources and energy to help their neighbors in need. Together, we can reach our goal of warming one million people each winter, one community at a time!” One Warm Coat is a national non-profit organization that works to provide a free, warm coat to any person in need and raises awareness of the vital need for warm coats. One Warm Coat supports individuals, groups, companies and organizations across the country by providing the tools and resources needed to hold a successful coat drive. Coats are distributed in the communities where they were collected, to any person in need, without charge, discrimination or obligation. Since its inception in 1992, One Warm Coat has worked with its volunteers to give away over 4 million coats.

Edison- Inventor Of Christmas Tree Lighting - Revisit The Magic In West Orange

by Michele Guttenberger

ince Thomas Edison was the inventor of the incandescent light bulb, he also became the first manufacturer and designer of electrical Christmas tree lighting. Newark, N.J., became the new North Pole for these twinkling inventions. Harrison and Edison’s General Electric Company were the modern day magical workshops for the holidays. It all started in 1882 at the Manhattan address of 139 East 36 Street, the family home of Mr. E. H. Johnson, vice president of the Edison Company for Electric Lighting. The Johnson Family home became the first home with an electric lighted Christmas tree. Interesting the first electric lit tree had patriotic colored bulbs and rotated as reported by the Tribune - “As the tree turned, the colors alternated, all the lamps going out and being relit at every revolution. The result was a continuous twinkling of dancing colors, red, white, blue, white, red, blue- all evening.” These hand-blown bulbs needed to be wired together like dainty pearls on a necklace. The Johnson tree was a real 1882 technical show-stopper. Soon, the electric lighted tree was a must have décor for all fashionable homes at Christmas. However, this new

technology needed an expert tech support crew for successful installation. The wireman was the 1800’s version of amazing home technicians that knew something about stringing wire. The Edison Lighting Company soon supplied 5th Ave department stores. The lighted trees were an extravaganza that attracted shoppers in droves. The early 1900s department store tree lights cost $300 plus the equivalent of approximately $6,517.75 today. However, it did include wiring services and a generator. With a price tag that was pricey even for New York City glitz, it was not unusual for Edison to have a Christmas rental plan for these lights. Today, for those who live in the NY/Metro area, transport back in time and visit Thomas Edison’s West Orange factory lab and even his nearby Victorian era Glenmont family estate home historically decked out for the Christmas Holidays. The home is located inside Llewelyn Park, West Orange. Make reservations at visitor center first. For special winter and holiday programs at Thomas Edison National Historical Park at 211 Main Street West Orange, go to www.nps.gov/edis or contact Visitor Information 973-736-0550 x11.
