school programs and camps, Emily feels that the WorkFamily teachers have helped her to become the good, smart, and strong woman she is today. We wish you much success in creating more magic at TCNJ!” Sorrentino’s counselor, Lisa Kool-Behr, said, “Emily has pursued a demanding curriculum of courses through most of her four years of high school. With her intense love for learning and thirst for knowledge, she has kept her standards high, and in addition has explored and performed exceptionally well in a variety of subject areas. She is a student who will be well prepared to tackle the most demanding courses at the college level, and it comes as no surprise to me that she is the recipient of this fine scholarship.” The Work-Family Connection is an organization that provides before and after school care, kindergarten extended day programs, and summer camp opportunities for children throughout New Jersey. The scholarship opportunity is granted to a student applicant who attended The Work-Family Connection programs as a child.

WHAT’S NEW IN DENTISTRY Recently, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new dental material called silver diamine fluoride, which has been used for decades in Japan. This new material can arrest large tooth decay after removing the decay with a hand instrument. While it is not a permanent solution to treating cavities, it has a wide variety of applications. For instance, it is good for treating cavities in small children. If a three-year-old child has many large cavities in his or her baby teeth but is fearful of the dentist, this new material is a viable option for treatment. The dentist can simply remove the decay with a hand instrument, dry the affected tooth and apply this material. After this, the dentist can go back and restore the teeth one by one at a later date, when the child is more readily able to handle the procedure. The application diamine fluoride can also help those with delayed dental insurance coverage. Sometimes, a patient has a tooth awaiting treatment. His or her dental insurance will not cover the procedures until months later when it becomes effective. This patient can have the material applied as a temporary solution until insurance can cover the procedures to properly treat the tooth. Due to the simplicity of the applica-

tion of silver diamine fluoride and the economical nature of this type of treatment, the patient can meet a budget. Other applications include geriatric care. Many senior patients have a limited budget, yet have many large root cavities due to various medical conditions. Silver diamine fluoride can economically arrest multiple cavities after one procedure. It provides a valuable and cost-effective alternative. As always, my office stays at the forefront of dental technology and material science. Chatham High School Student Wins U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize
ishita Sinha from Chatham has won the 2016 U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP)—the most prestigious youth competition for water-related research. Sinha and 53 other students, representing a total of 47 states and Puerto Rico, competed in the national event in June at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Worldwide, 2.4 billion people are exposed to public health and environmental threats because they lack access to reliable and affordable sanitation options. One promising alternative is a simple two-pit composting toilet that uses a natural anaerobic process to treat solid waste. Despite its efficacy, concerns remain about fecal coliform bacteria in the liquid waste and the impacts on local drinking water sources. Sinha’s two-phase project, “Experimental Studies in Developing Safe Sanitation Solutions, tested potential low-cost additives to improve this process and evaluated the associated design constraints. “Nishita’s study to develop safe sanitation solutions showed not only an understanding of the technical issues associated with designing sanitary facilities to decompose the organic component of waste, but also recognized the need to reduce the bacterial concentration associated with the waste, said Jeanette Brown, Chair of the SJWP Review Committee. “The novel way she tested her hypothesis re-
vealed that fecal coliform could be reduced by 83 percent. We look forward to seeing the results of her continued research and the perfection of her design. Sinha received $10,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Stockholm, Sweden where she will represent the United States at the international competition during World Water Week, Aug. 28-Sept. 2. The international winner will receive $15,000 presented during a royal ceremony by the prize’s Patron HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. In the United States, the Water Environment Federation and its Member Associations organize the regional, state, and national SJWP competitions with support from Xylem Inc., who also sponsors the international competition and the $1,000 Bjorn von Euler Innovation in Water Scholarship Award. The Water Environment Federation (WEF) is a not-forprofit technical and educational organization of 33,000 individual members and 75 affiliated Member Associations representing water quality professionals around the world. Since 1928, WEF and its members have protected public health and the environment. As a global water sector leader, its mission is to connect water professionals; enrich the expertise of water professionals; increase the awareness of the impact and value of water; and provide a platform for water sector innovation. Achieve Fitness Goals In First Class, Comprehensive Facility
By Cheryl Conway t Retro Fitness in Florham Park, members can appreciate affordability, cleanliness, new classes and equipment and a welcoming environment. Opened since March 2014, Retro Fitness of Florham Park is part of the Retro Fitness brand established in 2004, a New Jersey based company known for introducing large scale fitness centers with affordable membership prices to markets that previously only offered more expensive alternatives. The company was founded by entrepreneur Eric Casaburi and has evolved from a regional Northeast gym concept into a national franchise system with more than 145 gyms in operation across 16 states. “It’s been exciting to be part of the brand’s growth as a franchise owner,” says Teresa Intravaia, co-owner of Retro Fitness in Hanover. “We opened Retro Fitness to provide the community a comprehensive facility that will help them achieve their health and fitness goals at an affordable price,” says Intravaia. “Retro Fitness allows us to do this without skimping out on the necessities for a good workout. We offer a clean and welcoming environment for every member to achieve success without feeling intimidated or overwhelmed—no matter their fitness level.” The 12,740 square-foot facility “blends vibrant color schemes into a fun, energetic atmosphere where gym members can comfortably meet their fitness goals,” describes In-
travaia. “We’re equipped with 80 -100 pieces of top-of-theline circuit and weight training equipment, as well as cardio machines with personal flat-screen TVs and smartphone hookups.” A variety of live classes are offered such as Spin, Zumba, Pound, Plyoga and Barre. Members can also work up a sweat in “our popular cardio movie theater that houses a variety of cardio equipment instead of seats and plays movies on a large screen throughout the day.” Additional member amenities include one-on-one personal training, full-service locker rooms, a supervised children’s playroom, the latest in tanning technology, a full-service pro-shop and a Retro Blends smoothie bar – “all housed within a high-energy, social atmosphere.” Retro Fitness also has a Health and Wellness Center equipped with a licensed chiropractor, massage therapist and acupuncture. Every member that signs up gets a free therapeutic massage and free consultation. “We really do provide a first-class experience with top of the line amenities at an affordable price,” says Intravaia. “We genuinely care about our members and their health and fitness goals and work tirelessly to help them realize their true potential.” Joining Retro Fitness is a welcoming experience. “People should consider Retro Fitness if they want to be a part of a community,” says Intravaia. “At Retro Fitness we’re very much a family, and we help keep members ac-
countable and motivate them to reach their fitness goals. Our entire staff is very friendly and always makes sure to say hello to everyone. Our personal trainers and instructors are extremely knowledgeable and often will speak up if they see a member lifting incorrectly and will advise how to correct his or her form to avoid putting extra harm on their body. Our members know that if they have a question or concern that we’re here for them. Anything we can do that is going to help them reach their fitness goals in a safe and effective manner we do.” Members who join can take advantage of special rates throughout the calendar year. “Whether its $0 enrollment or other discounted rates, the gym keeps it fresh and as enticing as possible for those looking to join a gym that cares,” she says. There are no qualifications to join other than paying the monthly membership fee. Besides offering a quality facility, Retro Fitness makes it a point to give back to the community. “We’ve always been very community focused and enjoy getting involved and giving back as much as we can,” says Intravaia. “We’re currently in the planning the stages of our next fundraising event to raise money for cancer research with Relay for Life. In the past we’ve hosted Zumba, Pound, Plyoga and Insanity classes for Relay for Life, Partners In Caring and Making Strides against Breast Cancer, to name a continued on next page

Chatham Aims To Prevent Suicide With Inaugural Walk
By Jason Cohen he stigma of depression is often taboo to talk about. Unfortunately, this disease often leads to suicide. The New Jersey Department of Children and Families said in a 2013 report that suicide is the thirdleading cause of death for New Jersey youth ages 10 to 24. On Sept. 24, Chatham Township plans to host its inaugural Out of the Darkness Walk at Chatham High School with a goal to raise
funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and increase awareness of suicide prevention. According to the AFSP, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and the 12th leading cause of death overall in New Jersey, yet is preventable. In fact on Aug. 1, Governor Chris Christie signed a bill called The Madison Holleran Suicide Prevention Act, was inspired by a New Jersey high school track star

progression in its efforts to raise awareness about this important issue. “Residents have been supportive of this initiative as they realize the importance of removing the stigma associated with suicide,” Ritter noted. “In fact, residents from adjacent towns are also getting involved which is great as we look to increase awareness.” New Jersey Area Director of AFSP Lorraine Mackin spoke with the “Chatham News” about the walk and suicide. Mackin explained that there is no single cause of suicide, but is often linked to mental health, depression, anxiety or drugs. She explained that typically those who manage their mental health often do not think about suicide. However, people who take their lives often exhibit new behaviors that can be related to a painful event, loss or change. “These walks give people the courage to open up about their own struggle or loss, and the platform to change our culture’s approach to mental health,” she said. This requires colleges to make a mental health professional available around the clock to counsel students. “Suicide is preventable, and while it’s not a topic that is often discussed, we believe our inaugural community walk will help shed light on this important issue,” said Chatham Township Mayor Curt Ritter in a press release. “Suicide touches one in five American families and we hope that by walking we save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. Earlier this year, we heard statistics from the school district of the Chathams in which four percent of middle school students and eight percent of high school students have thought about suicide. We know that suicide does not discriminate. I encourage all residents to consider participating in this important event and support our efforts to help prevent suicide.” Ritter explained that he has made a point of increasing suicide awareness in Chatham Township. Earlier this year the township hosted a suicide awareness prevention seminar for residents and this walk is a natural

ack to School can be a challengebut as soon as everyone’s schedule is back in full swing, take the opportunity to pay a little more attention to a very important person…. You. So, if you have been paying attention to everything except yourself, now may be a great time to take inventory and think about what you really need to feel better and more confident about you. Remember, the way you look, can have a direct impact on the way you feel- and vice-versaso maybe it’s time for a “September resolution” to work on you. No one feels 100 percent confident with their body. If the way your abdomen, thighs and knees look when you wear shorts or that “little black dress” -and if trying on your fall wardrobe brings visions of a muffin top and chubby “problem areas,” don’t worry you’re not alone. It doesn’t matter where the least favorite “spot” of your body is – help is on the way- and there’s a good chance you can deal with these areas and even that double-chin that has been gaining on you- in ways that even the most aggressive diet and exercise has not been able to fix. Yes, the times, they are changing and now you can literally freeze away the fat in many of those problem areas… including the abdomen, thighs, knees….and even that stubborn double-chin. CoolSculpting is the latest FDAcleared technology in fat freezing and body sculpting. The CoolSculpting treatment freezes the fat cells underneath the skin, without damaging any other tissue, organs or the skin itself. Once the fat cells are frozen, they are metabolized and naturally removed from the body. Thus, the fat reduction that occurs is permanent. Typical patients can expect a 20 to 25 percent reduction in their fat with each treatment, and results are seen approximately eight to 10 weeks after the treatment. CoolSculpting is a preferred fat removal procedure compared to many other methods, due to the fact that it is non-invasive, non-surgical and has very little pain and down-time. At Vibrance MedSpa we are proud to
say that we have been offering CoolSculpting for almost three years. Our clients have seen tremendous results and have successfully reduced their abdomens, belly fat, love handles and inner and outer thighs. As of late, per the requests of our valued clients, we are now even offering the latest in CoolSculpting procedures which reduces submental fat on the double chin and the upper knee areas. Whether you are looking for a way to shed those last few stubborn pounds around your mid-section or your chin seems to have morphed into two, don’t wait another day to feel good about yourself again by making a positive change in your appearance and attitude by visiting our highly trained and understanding staff! Call today at 973-328-1700 to schedule a free consultation and freeze assessment to see how CoolSculpting can help freeze your stubborn fat away for good. Find Your Dance Friend Forever At Theater Dance Center!
E
by Millene Michel – Artistic Director at TDC very memory of childhood is filled with friends who were there to share them. These friends are not always easy to find especially in our busy world. Encouraging friendships can be hard for parents, because kids need to have a bond with one another. Friends are created because the children have something in common, spend lots of time together and enjoy events for the entire family. Dance is a great way to help your child find their DFF! (Dance Friend Forever) I am one of those lucky people. Dance not only helped me find lifelong friends, but it kept me out of trouble, I was never bored and it also helped me come out of my shell. Without dance, I would not be the confident person I am today…. Without dance I wouldn’t have the life I have today. I am the director of Theater Dance Center in Flanders. I am proud to say that I am still in touch with most of my friends from dance. We were in each other’s weddings and still get together regularly. Now in business for 25 years, It is wonderful to share our successes as dancers and friends. Giving your child the gift of dance has so many benefits. It gives them confidence, a great sense of self, teaches teamwork, coordination, compassion as you work with others. One learns how to live a healthy lifestyle, taking care of your body. Sharing memories of your first recital together, trips to competitions or performances at the carnival or for senior citizens. Spending weekly classes together, sharing the challenges in class or the successes in each other’s efforts. We at Theater Dance Center witness the bonding of friends all the time. We cultivate relationships with our students that last much longer than just the years they train. We are now training dancers whose parents were our students. Watching our students grow into young adults who are successful and confident is what makes us love what we do. Dance training is only a small portion of the real impact we have on our student’s lives. TDC is celebrating its 25th year. I, Millene Michel, along with my best friend Mary Ellen Volz have directed and taught our students and shared memories that we will never forget. Our faculty is special, they are trained, experienced and most of all loving and care about their students. We offer Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Contemporary, Acrobatics. We offer classes for all the lovers of dance, whether you wish to dance for fun or want to pursue a career in dance. Some New programs we are offering this year: Tumbling Tigers for ages three to nine, Musical Theater dance for The-
atrical kids, Teen Yoga and Yogi-Barre for adults. We invite you to come see what makes us family. Open House Registration is now in progress… but you can come to our celebration on Aug. 27 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. we will be offering free sample classes, free gifts and mention this article and get a discount on your registration fee. www.theaterdancecenter.com (973) 584-5020; 230 U.S. Highway 206 in Flanders.

Sierra Club Chair Speaks At Library On Park Preservation
By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta merica was the first country to preserve national parks for future generations, according to Eric Hausker, chair of the Loantaka Chapter of the Sierra Club, who lectured on Sat., Aug. 6, at the Chatham Library. The audience was taken back to 250 B.C. when Hausker spoke of an Indian emperor, Asoka, who took action to protect forests and animal life. However, the measures didn’t prevent having two animals hunted to extinction - the aurochs and the dodo bird. Throughout the centuries, it seemed as if each time there was a triumph for the environment in times gone by, there was also a downfall. Hausker called the 1849 California Gold Rush a “sad period of history” as the miners only cared about getting rich and not the actual land. However a monumental moment in the history of preserving the land was when Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant in 1864 to save Yosemite. Then Yellowstone National Park was the first to be approved by
Roofing
Congress in 1872. And in 1892 John Muir founded the Sierra Club with 350 hikers in the San Francisco Bay area after hiking all over the west coast. “It was a religious experience for him,” said Hausker. “Muir said that ‘nature restores the soul.’” From that, the Sierra Club just “grew and grew,” according to Hausker. “Now we cover all aspects of the environment: energy, air pollution, vegetarianism.” Today, according to Hausker, who has been a grassroots unpaid volunteer with Sierra Club for about 13 years, said there are 59 national parks with a total of 131,000 square mileage protected. He feels that the greatest triumph in New Jersey happened in the late 1950s when a new national airport was considered to be built over the great swamp. The news came to the attention of a couple of housewives and they put together an organization to preserve the great swamp wildlife area – and instead, the Newark Airport was expanded. This group of housewives became known as The
New Jersey Preservation Organization. Hausker said, “They preserve farms; keep families on farms.”

Sierra Club Chair Speaks...
continued from previous page Club, he hopes to do a little bit to raise peoples’ consciousness by “giving lectures about changing the way we live and being a little less fixated on just having a good time.” In addition, he said, “My granddaughter is a year old. I want her to grow up and see trees standing.” Hausker attributes congestion and pollution as threats to the parks. He said, “The crazy ideas of making the parks more exciting than they are. At the Grand Canyon, they built the sky walk. They built a glass bridge in a half circle shape. Now you can walk straight out and see a thousand feet below you.” He paused and added, sarcastically, “Like you need more thrills when you got to a park. You don’t need to make the park more fascinating than it already is. Let nature do what it wants.” Hausker has been to many state parks in the United States and feels that one of the most fascinating is Isle Royal – a huge island in Lake Superior. He said, “It’s completely preserved. No roads. No cars. They don’t even allow speed boat motor boats. All canoe!” Once Hausker retires, he plans on making the rounds to all the parks in the U.S. As for now, he rides his bike to work and cooks using a wood stove. New View Media Group Applauds Some Area Schools For Ranking High On National List
By Cheryl Conway s schools throughout New Jersey take in the final weeks of summer before opening their doors to the 2016/2017 school year, some may take a bow to a job well done in making the country’s list as a top public high school. In a recent ranking released by “Newsweek,” six public high schools in the coverage area of New View Media Group newspapers made the list for top 500 schools in the country. In the top 500, there were 51 N.J. public high schools listed among the nation’s best in Newsweek's 2016 list. Out of nearly 16,000 public high schools in the Newsweek rankings, Chatham High School ranked number
T
40; Madison High School ranked 115; Hanover Park High School in East Hanover ranked 365; Livingston High School ranked 383; Whippany Park High School ranked 429; and Mt. Olive High School in Flanders, ranked 482. The school rankings are the result of research conducted by “Newsweek,” along with Westat, an analytic firm. They used objective measurements to determine the annual ranking such as the ratio of full-time student enrollment/counselor; SAT/ACT scores; graduation rate; and college enrollment rate. Congratulations to all of the schools who made the 2016 list for top public high schools in the nation.

How Students Can Handle The Transition To Middle School
child’s school-aged years are filled with many different lessons and experiences. While in school, kids have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and meet new people. Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools. While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools. That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools. Making the transition from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be. The National Education Association says a common element of a successful middle school experience is a smooth and positive transition from elementary school. The following are a few ways students can handle their transition to middle school. • Participate in a school-based transition program. Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can take tours of the campus. Parents can take part in these events with their children. If your schedule does not allow you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty
member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school. • Dispel any myths your youngster might have heard about middle school. Youngsters hear lots of things about middle schools, and much of what kids hear might be untrue. Ask kids what they have heard about the schools they will be moving on to, and then do your best to dispel any myths. • Find a middle school buddy. Ask an older sibling or invite someone who is currently enrolled in the school to speak with your child and answer any questions he or she may have. Hearing directly from a fellow student may make your child feel more comfortable about what to expect. • Talk about any other fears. Engage in an open dialogue with your son or daughter about any additional fears he or she may have. If students are worried about academics, spend some time over the summer going over the curriculum. If the potential for peer pressure is a cause for concern, reinforce advice on how to react to peer pressure. Parents and their children can take several steps to make students’ transitions to middle school as smooth as possible.

Legendary Birthplace Of American Cinema Features Workshop For Future Cinematic Artists
by Michele Guttenberger n Sun., July 17, the Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange partnered with MONO NO AWARE, a nonprofit cinematic arts creative group to offer a one day film workshop at the exact site and replica of the legendary Black Maria studio. The program was promoted as a school age workshop. Participants were given special reservations to shoot film inside the Black Maria using the film format that was originally used more than 100 years ago. Family participants came as far as Brooklyn New York to learn about old film production methods and starred in their own skit complete with props and attire accessories. The skits were shot using 16mm film. This is a format Edison’s movie cameras used to capture short sequences as black and white images on reversal film stock. MONO NO AWARE staff was the camera crew and film processors. At 4 p.m. all workshop movie participants got to see
their film projected on the movie screen at the visitor’s film viewing area and also received a digital video copy of their work. This was the third year of this popular July summer film workshop. The park staff looks forward to repeating this family program again next July with MONO NO AWARE. Plan ahead for it in next year’s summer calendar: note Sunday mid-July 2017 as a summer cinematic workshop date. Be aware this workshop has limited enrollment slots and fills up quickly. Edison and his staff produced hundreds of filmstrips from their Black Maria studio, with many genres and titles ranging from the romantic Kiss to a Cockfight and sports Wrestling, that were made to be viewed in Kinetoscope parlors across the country in the 1880’s. The first movie theater projection was in 1896. The Edison Company showed a collection of moving images as a minor act in a vaudeville show at Koster and Bial’s Music Hall in New York City. This event inaugurated the era of commer-
cial movies which has now lasted into the 21st Century. During the month of August come see these same landmark films. Edison studio produced films will be shown every Friday at 2:30 p.m. in historical building 11 which
is free with an entrance admission. For more special family programs at Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange go to www.nps.gov/edis or contact visitor information at 973-736-0550 x11.
