Troop 8 Commemorates Centennial All Year Through

six years later that Troop 8 began to hold meetings in conjunction with the Ogden Memorial Presbyterian Church. It is a partnership that has lasted 100 years and is thriving today. Tony Britt is a Scout-

master with Troop 8 whose son, Erik, is currently working on his Eagle Scout project. Britt has been with the troop for five years, since his son was promoted from Cub Scouts. This year, however, he has been using his skills from his career in marketing to draw attention to this historic year for Troop 8. There is a four-pronged approach to this celebration, which started with a birthday party back in April. The celebration was complete with a chorus of “Happy Birthday,” cake and candles to commemorate the day of the troops beginning. Then in May, the troop held a Gala celebration at the Fairmont Country Club, with about 190 people in attendance. A dozen or so alumni were present, some of whom received the honor of “Scout Legend.” These were people

troop to its foundational principles. One of the principles of scouting that was instituted by Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, who wrote the book “Scouting for Boys” and who is credited with starting the worldwide phenomenon of Boy Scouts, is having the

boys take leadership in their troop and be a vital part of the planning and decision making process. When McGraff was a scoutmaster for Troop 8 back in the 80’s, it had gotten away from the idea of boy led scouting. The level of interest in scouting was continued on page 2

continued from front page waning as were the troop’s numbers. There were only eight to 10 boys. “He saved the troop,” said Britt “by reinstituting boy leadership and reinstating the senior patrol council once a month to map out objectives.” On the subject of boy lead scouting Britt is firm. “We’ve had both sides of it and the boy lead aspect has all these great dividends,” he says. Commenting on the growth he has seen in his own son after he was elected as senior patrol leader, “The transformation was incredible. I’m looking around thinking, ‘Is this my son?’” Britt was so impressed by his son’s growth as a leader as he stepped up in a scout leadership position; his public speaking skills, decision making skills, and his confidence. Being given the opportunity to make decisions for the troop and plan troop events as well as manage time and resources helps the scouts develop self-management skills that are vital for success in life. Baden-Powell first saw the need to teach boys basic survival and scouting skills while serving in the English army. According to the Boy Scouts of America web site, “While stationed in India, he discovered that his men did not know basic first aid or the elementary means of sur-

vival in the outdoors. Baden-Powell realized he needed to teach his men many frontier skills, so he wrote a small handbook called Aids to Scouting, which emphasized resourcefulness, adaptability, and the qualities of leadership that frontier conditions demanded.” Those involved in scouting today can see the same deficits in the 21st century boys, not only in frontier conditions, but in life skills. “It is modernizing in many ways,” says Britt “which is tremendous. It is not 1916 anymore.” Still he is quick to point out that the core aspects of scouting still apply and sticking to the principles of boy leadership serves the troop and the boys themselves well. “We are very active in the community, and have some outdoor related activity every month. The times have changed but the volunteer efforts in the community have remained the same.” In preparation for the recent Gala, Britt went through old newspaper issues looking for mentions of Troop 8. A lot of the efforts to help in the community are very similar to things the troop was doing to improve the community back in the 1920’s till the present day. One current service project is for the boys to paint all 370 fire hydrants in town. Having the boys paint them frees up the highly skilled workers with the Department

of Public Works, to do things better suited for their skills set. That is something Boy Scouts from any era might have participated in. There are two more centennial year events planned for this year. One is the 4th of July parade in which another “Scout Legend,” Dick Ligertwood, will be marching as the parade's Grand Marshall. At 85 years of age he has spent more than 70 years as part of scouting in Chatham. At the recent Gala, many alumni and scouts stood up to commend him for having made such a huge difference in their lives. The last event planned for the centennial celebration is a scout and alumni scouting expedition being held in September. Both current scouts and alumni will be attending to celebrate Troop 8 and to take part in a variety of traditional scouting activities. Britt is hoping that many Troop 8 alumni will join the scouts for both the July 4th and September events. Any past troop 8 scouts can contact Britt at Troop8100yrs@gmail.com. Unfortunately the troop does not have a current database of past members, so reaching out to him is the best way to receive updates and find out more about how to be involved in this salute to Troop 8’s 100 years of scouting.

Fur Store Owner Continues To Warm Customers After A Century Of Business

assing on the family business has been the tradition for the past 100 years for Terzako Furs in Caldwell. Michael Kambourakis and his son, Elias, have continued the tradition of being in the fur business for 10 generations, following in the footsteps of Michael’s grandfather, Eric Rouskas and his uncle Harry Terzako. It started when the two decided to leave Kastoria, Greece in 1913. Kastoria was and still is the genesis of fur in Europe. Rouskas and Terzako settled in Newark. They started in working for Best & Company and on the side they made fur coats, collars and trimmings. At that time, America was the land of skins and trapping of wild broad tail, mink, muskrat, raccoons and beavers. Foxes came later on in the 1930's. When farming started in the 1930's and 1940's the family got better quality mink and fox pelts. The fur industry grew to a point that it is now all over the world. The family opened a store on High Street in Newark, then moved to 19 Prospect Street in East Orange. They moved to the Caldwells in the early 1970's. The family members continued to be a part of the business. During high school and college, Kambourakis began to work in the business. After graduating college and graduate school, he became a specialist in the spectrum of autism. His love of family made him decide to become the ninth generation in Terzako furs, and his son Elias has

joined him and is now the 10th generation. Terzako Furs is a full service furrier, gearing its business to custom work, and are one of the few custom houses in the country. The sources for the furs have grown to be all over the world. Thousands of satisfied customers from the tri-state area continue to buy fur coats, jackets, vests and other unique fur items from Terzako Furs. In addition the store makes on premise raincoats, shearlings, capes and fur blankets. Several years it began to import leathers from Italy. And when it comes to storing and cleaning furs for the summer, the store’s on-site fur vaults are the perfect vacation place! Of course Terzako had a complimentary remodeling consultation and will update old furs to the latest style. According to Kambourakis, his fur business is important, but his humanitarian work is his passion. He initiated helping the people of the Dominican Republic years ago by himself, as he saw the need for clean water, educational supplies, clothing so kids could go to school medicines and anything else he thought would help the people become educated, and healthy. His dreams of a medical facility has become a reality thanks to support of doctors, hospitals and the Caldwell Rotary, where he is a very active member, among other sponsors. He has been responsible in raising funds for five buildings and the clinic in partnership with LIG Global &

Global Health from Barnabas Health and Robert Wood Johnson. Visit dominicanrelief.org for more information. Kambourakis’ family who came to America would surely be proud of his success in the family business they started, and also of the good deeds that benefit people with his caring, warm heart. To celebrate its 100th anniversary, they are offering a store wide 20 percent off showroom sale until June 30. Stay tuned for other events that will be happening throughout the year.

Hundreds Volunteer To Feed Thousands In Rotary Project

By Cheryl Conway lanning and organizing for a year, raising funds through personal donations and sponsors, setting up the day of the event, moving boxes, running around making sure everything is according to plan, then cleaning up- exhausting indeed! But when all was prepped, packaged and sent on its way- the satisfaction outweighed all of that hard work. The Madison Rotary Club and Foundation held a successful End Hunger 3.6 Project of 2016 on Sat., April 16, at the Vincent Martyr Church in Madison. Close to 300 volunteers and Rotarians throughout Morris, Essex and Somerset counties packed the church’s gymnasium and helped to assemble 52,000 pre-cooked meals to be distributed to various non-profit, hunger focused organizations throughout New Jersey and New York City. “There’s a child out there; there’s a senior out there; there’s a disabled person out there- 52,000 times, now we are going to provide to someone who otherwise would not have a meal,” says Ellsworth Havens, project chair and president of the Madison Rotary Club Foundation. “There’s a satisfaction there,” he says. “A child who could go to school not hungry; a senior who could go to school not hungry- it did what it was supposed to do.” The uncooked meals that were packaged included either rice and beans or macaroni and cheese, selected for their popularity, easy packing and storing, and great source of carbohydrates, Havens explained. Each meal equaled one pound, and included enough to provide six meals per bag.

Each station packaged the items into pre-weighted bags medically sealed with a shelf-life for up to one year; and were then distributed to participating agencies on site that day. The two largest supported agencies were the Bowery Mission in NYC which received about $25,000 worth of food; and the Salvation Army of NJ with 28 sites receiving the meals, says Havens, totaling about $15,000 in food. Other recipients included The Table of Hope and the Market Street Mission in Morristown; St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark; a soup kitchen in Dover and a Community Soup Kitchen in Morristown. Besides filling the stomachs of those hungry, the project was fulfilling to all those that helped from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. “We had everything from individual people to people in organizations and groups,” says Havens, “local volunteers, to businesses to school children. It was a broad spectrum of groups, broad spectrum of ages.” Volunteers came from the Madison Y, Keller William Metropolitan, St. Vincent Martyr School and even 30 middle school seventh and eighth graders. Youngest volunteer was eight months old, Havens laughed, to a number of volunteers in their 80’s. With a goal of packaging 50,000 meals, organizers were pleased that they were able to “edge over our goal,” with an additional 2,000 meals, but realized they could provide that much more. “We got a lot done in a very brief amount of time,” says Havens. “We could have done more but we ran out of boxes,”

says Havens. “The need is a multiple of that. We know we could provide more. There’s still unfortunately a growing need. We learned a lot this year; our planning, we know what to do.” Next year, the rotary plans to double the

amount of meals packaged, says Havens. The non-profit group already had a meeting to start planning for next year’s event to be held in the spring. Since the gym at the church will be uncontinued on next page

continued from previous page dergoing renovations, Havens says “We need to relocate, so they are currently looking at different venues. A number of nearby rotary clubs have expressed an interest to get involved in the Hunger 3.6 Project next year, including Morris Plains, Hanover, Dover, Denville and possibly some clubs in NY, he adds. For this year’s event, rotaries from Summit, Morris Twp. and Randolph helped with the project. The End Hunger 3.6 Project stands for the 3.6 seconds in which someone dies of malnutrition or starvation. The goal of the project is to prepare and package between 100,000 – 150,000 meals to be distributed to various non-profit, hunger-focused organizations throughout New Jersey and New York City. Havens and several others came up with the project idea this past summer. With concern over homelessness, poverty and “children being very hungry, rotary members wanted to address those areas, explains Havens, a Madison Rotary member since

2007. The number of people who go hungry and who are in need of assistance in finding a meal in the NJ and NYC area continues to rise, the rotary cited in a previous press release. In NJ alone, the number of people living below the poverty level is more than one million. One in five children in NJ is hungry and relying on food stamps to provide daily meals. The event was made possible through outside supporters, individuals and groups such as the lead sponsor Td Bank and major sponsors including Keller Williams Metropolitan, Grace Episcopal Church, Investor’s Bank, St. Vincent Martyr Church, Fulton Bank, the Forum Club, and Carlotta Budd LLC. “This is what Rotarians do throughout the community and the world, says Havens, events like these. “This is what we do. July 1 we start all over again. For further information about the Madison Rotary or this project, go to www.madisonrotarynj.org.

The Milliner’s Tale: The Craft Of Hat Making Uncovered At METC

By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta onika Stebbins loved hats since childhood. “My aunt kept me in hats and I didn’t care that no one else was wearing them,” she remembered fondly. Stebbins, who has a millinery degree and owns The Hat Shop in Madison, presented “The Milliner’s Tale: The Craft of Hat Making” at the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts (METC) on Sun., April 24. The idea of this exhibit was floating around METC for some time now according to Deborah Farrar Starker, the museum’s executive director. “Having a different exhibit focusing on women as business people and craftspeople was one of our goals,” she said. The Milliner’s Tale examined the millinery trade from the 18th to 20th century, when middle class women were carving out a niche for themselves. Stebbins said that during this time, “Life was structured by rules. Trouble came when women had independent spirit. An honorable woman would not have a business. Puritanism was running

deep.” By the mid-19th century, women began to take their place as business owners who could make their own way in the world, though it was unknown exactly how many failed and how many succeeded, according to Stebbins. Millinery had a simplistic approach. A middle class little girl would start needlecraft at a young age and then the hobby turned into a profit. It was a business where little starting money was needed – just a thimble and needle. The hats featured in the exhibit began as far back as 1780. In early American history most towns had at least one milliner who custom-made hats for women in town. Bonnets were all the rage throughout the 1800s. From 1880 to 1960, with the advent of commercially-made hats, independent milliners existed alongside large department stores like Macy’s. The exhibit featured a pink hat circa 1940, made with velour, fur, felt, and velvet with an egret plume inserted into the felt, secured on the inside. The hat was made by Caspar

David, a male Hollywood milliner who designed headwear for the stars. During this period men began to design and trim hats – filling niches once occupied solely by women. From 1960 to the present, hats became expressive to a woman’s wardrobe, rather than a necessity. Though the majority of women bought hats from department stores, the independent millinery survived and continued to create beautiful custom-made hats. For something truly unique, women today still go to contemporary milliners, as

millinery is a craft still very much alive! One of the modern hats featured was the Leather Cloche, a softer version of the leather biker cap, trimmed in leather fringe and buttons with an asymmetrical partial brim giving the piece an exclusive look. In addition to hats, also displayed are some of the tools of the trade from the collection of METC. This exhibit will run until June 29. For more information, visit: www.metc.org. Visit Monika Stebbins’ hat shop website at: www.hatshopnj.com.

Correction In May Article On Community Outreach To Homeless

n the May issue of the “Chatham News,” an article titled “Organizations In Chatham Bridge Gap To Help Feed Homeless” by Jason Cohen contained two remarks that are in need of clarification. The comment that “They had the robots fight, which caused a few homeless people to want to take bets,” is being retracted. An additional comment that stated, “Most homeless people just want someone to talk to,” needed further explanation. “Homeless people want housing, jobs and food and respect,” explains Lucy

Malatesta, Bridges Outreach Run leader. “Speaking with them shows them the respect they often do not experience.” Having someone to talk to “is an important need but it is not all they need,” she explains. “Bridges Outreach volunteers are part of an organization that advocates for the homeless and their need for housing, food etc. In addition we offer conversation and fellowship because feeling respected is empowering. Offering my respect and encouragement is what causes me to feel joy on a Bridges run.”

CHS AP Physics C team members were Nishita Sinha, Yulan Zhang, Mark Ozdemir, and Andrew Schmidt. The Science League acknowledged that teams that place in the top ten have accomplished an impressive feat, stating, “This accomplishment places the team members and the teams into a very elite group.” CHS’s top students on the team ranked

individually as well. In the AP Physics C tests, Nishita Sinha placed first out of 620 students, and Yulan Zhang placed thirteenth out of 620 students. Science League is a competitive league across NJ, in which students participate in competitions in the different science subjects from January through April of each year. They compete by taking four exams in a given subject, and their scores are compared to other competing high school students’ scores to determine placements in the competition.

Juniors Awarded For Technology Aspirations

hatham High School juniors Catarina DeMatos and Margaret Harrigan have been selected as recipients of the Award for Aspirations in Computing by the National Center for Women in Information Technology (NCWIT). DeMatos has been selected as the 2016 New Jersey Affiliate Runner-Up, and Harrigan has been named a 2016 New Jersey Affiliate Certificate of Distinction. DeMatos has been a member of the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics team for two years and currently serves as co-captain. She helped the team place in the finals at three of five competitions. DeMatos has taken courses in CADD, computer science and robotics at CHS and is an active member of stage crew. In her free time, she is actively involved in bridging the gender gap in STEM and computing fields. She mentors a fifth grade all-girls robotics competition team, who placed at the state competition under her direction. Harrigan has taken a wide variety of STEM classes at the high school including robotics, design in tech and web design,

CADD I and II, architecture, introduction to computer science, and AP computer science. Outside of classes, she has been a member of the Tech Club for the past two years, and through this club, she has participated in technology and problem solving competitions against other schools. She also volunteers with Chatham STEM as well. Both recipients are passionate about promoting gender equity in the technology fields. DeMatos Catarina said, “Although women make up half of the U.S. workforce, only 25 percent hold jobs in technical and computing fields. Being a minority in the field automatically makes you the underdog. To me, this recognition validates that I am on the right path, but also shows that there is still space for improvement.” Julianna Ryan, Robotics Team advisor and CHS Technology teacher, nominated DeMatos for the award. Ryan said, “Catarina has shown not only a love for the technology fields, but also a continuous drive to learn. Her hard

work and dedication have paid off!” John Hajdu,, CHS technology teacher, nominated Harrigan.

Hajdu said, “I believe Margaret is an exceptional young woman and am ecstatic to see her achievements being recognized.”

CHS Senior Named Student Of The Year For Book Collection

hatham High School senior Justin Sherman has been named the Chatham High School recipient of the Caring Student of the Year Award, through the Morris County Professional Counselors Association. The award is designed to recognize a senior who has demonstrated a caring and unselfish attitude towards another person, group of people, or cause, without any

desire of recognition or reward. Sherman was chosen for this award because of the herculean efforts he put into completing his Eagle Scout project: he collected and donated 6,300 books for the Bridge of Books Foundation, an organization that provides books to underserved children throughout New Jersey in order to support the development of literacy skills and the

The CHS team consisted of 28 students, most of whom participate in the track and cross country programs at CHS, as well as six staff members, including teachers, counselors, administrators, and even the superintendent, Dr. Mike LaSusa. Track and Cross Country Coach Nick DeSantis was instru-

mental in recruiting students for this experience, and the group raised more than $600 for the Special Olympics of NJ through the event. Last year, two Chatham Township Police Department officers ran alone with the torch, and this year, one of them, Muta Blanford, reached out to Assistant Principal Lori Gironda to invite CHS students and staff to participate. The torch-lighting ceremony took place on Fri., June 10, at Cougar Field.

hatham High School sophomore Indira Roy was selected as a delegate for the October 2016 Global Youth Institute hosted by the World Food Prize Foundation. Indira was one of only 400 students selected nationally for participation in the three-day institute, which takes place in Des Moines, Iowa. To qualify for selection, students must research and present on a critical food security issue under the supervision of a teacher mentor. At CHS, Indira was mentored by science teacher Missy Holzer as she researched and wrote a paper on the use of hydroponics in rural India to help subsistence farmers become commercial farmers, which she presented at the New Jersey Youth Institute at Rutgers in New Brunswick. At the institute, Indira will meet international experts on food security and agriculture issues, many of whom are Nobel and World Food Prize Laureates. Indira plans to present and discuss her findings with these experts and her peers. Students also have the opportunity to tour cuttingedge industrial and research facilities related to food and water security, nutrition, global agricultural, and health.

Local Farmers’ Markets In Full Swing This Season

F

Perry Street is closed for the Chester Farmers’ Market. Photo by Jane Primerano.

By Jane Primerano or one day every year, Chatham Borough turns from an upscale, sophisticated bastion of Morris County wealth into the epitome of small-town America. The Fishawack Festival was held Sat., June 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring vendors, not-for-profit groups, children running around in gaudy face paint, folks walking their dogs, everything that makes a tight community. This year, Fishawack coincides with opening day of the Farmers’ Market. The market, starting its 10th season at the railroad station parking lot is run by a volunteer committee and, for the past seven years, a Youth Volunteer League. According to the borough website, in 2014, volunteers worked more than 2,000 hours keeping the market going. Volunteer John Ball is known for being on site by 5:30 a.m. each Saturday during the season to greet and assist the vendors, according to the website. Community volunteers, including teens, are on site for the duration of the market, which runs from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. each week. Chatham’s is not the only super-organized farmers market. The Chester Farmers Market, which will run this year on Sundays from June 19 to Oct. 2 is sponsored by the Chester Rotary Club. It is held on Perry Street in the heart of the borough shopping district. Long-time Rotary member Bill McGuire is in charge. He said 13 of the 2015 vendors will be back in 2016, with a total of 16 vendors.

Chester always features music. McGuire said Rotary was still working on confirming the acts. A Grateful Dead cover band often plays, but McGuire said they also look for other performers, “something quieter than a rock band so vendors can communicate with their customers.” An a capella group from West Morris Mendham High School performed a few years ago, he said. The Hopatcong Farmers’ Market also opened Sun., June 19, in the municipal building parking lot. Hopatcong is noted for brightly colored tote bags and t-shirts, music over the municipal public address system and a nice, shady spot for visiting alpacas. Various alpaca farms rotate coming to the market. Councilwoman Marie Galate is in charge and she and other elected officials are always there to help out. They are known for watching customers’ dogs while they shop. The market runs through Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Like many markets, Hopatcong welcomes bakers, wood carvers and other local vendors along with farmers. Another Sunday market is in Morristown on Spring Street from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. All of this year’s vendors will be returning and the town is not accepting any new vendors, according to a spokeswoman at Town Hall. A former mainstay, the Netcong Farmers’ Market will not be open this year. No one at the borough hall could give an explanation. The market was at the railroad station parking lot and often featured cat adoption days from Netcong Trap, Neuter, Release.

People Flock To Turtle Back Zoo For Open House

By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta housands of people fled towards the gates of Turtle Back Zoo, West Orange, on Sat., June 4, for the 14th Annual Essex County Open House. There was live music, clowns, carnival games, treasure chests, giveaways, prize wheels and trivia tests, providing exciting entertainment for children as their parents gathered around more than 10 information tables that provided information about public awareness programs and services provided by Essex County. Directors and employees were on hand to answer questions. It was a great way for Essex County residents to meet the people who work for their county. The Open House included free admission to the zoo, which features: a mini-golf safari miniature golf course, sea lions, sting rays and sharks in a touch tank, a state-of-the-art reptile and education building, jaguars, snow leopards, Gibbon apes, wolves, otters, alligators, reptiles, and bears. There is also a beautiful gift shop. Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, Jr., said, “We’ve done this for fourteen years. We’re here to socialize and network for Essex County. And it’s an opportunity to see the zoo for free.” According to DiVincenzo, last year there were 16,000 people in attendance. He said, “We’re hoping to hit 20,000 today.” This event was formerly held at a small setting in the Hall

of Records, according to Anthony Puglisi, Public Information director. But the zoo can accommodate a lot more people. Puglisi said, “Not many people know about what the county government does and how it affects their life. It’s informational and we try to make it fun.” Claudette Hampton, case manager and nurse at Essex County Special Child Health Services said, “We’re here to educate the public about community health and special child services. And [for the public to] know about various resources in Essex County.” Other Essex County tables exhibits included: Paper Mill Playhouse, Family Wrap, New Jersey’s Early Intervention System, Essex County Juvenile Detention Center, New Jersey Mental Health Cares, OACANP (The Oranges ACA Navigator Project), and Essex County Vocational Technical Schools. Attendees were able to enjoy the new giraffe exhibit which just opened up, as well as the recently opened bison exhibit with a new viewing area to get up close and look into. Puglisi said, “Before there was a split rail fence. You couldn’t get close to the animals.” The prairie dog exhibit will also be upgraded. Puglisi said, “We’re changing the way the public views so you get more of a clear picture; before it was a high glass wall.” A lion exhibit is also in the works. In addition to the new animal exhibits and developments, the café expanded to two stories, which triples the capacity

Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. (second from right) and staff.

of what it was before. “It will help with crowds,” said Puglisi. “Improvements enhance the area for the public.” According to DiVincenzo, “NJ Monthly” magazine named Turtle Back Zoo the best zoo in New Jersey the last four years. And the zoo has always been awarded with a Certificate of Excellence in the last three years. For more information on Essex County, visit www.essexcountynj.com.

Looking For A Few Good Men

en have an identity issue. Hollywood often depicts men as self-centered couch potatoes who are always looking to party, act like adolescents and play video games, while shirking all of men’s responsibilities along the way. One example of this lack of respect for fatherhood may be best illustrated by a recent survey of holiday church attendance. At the bottom of the list with Independence Day was Father’s Day. As a matter of fact, most people no longer can even say when Father’s Day is! Why has this once welcomed day to honor fathers become little more than a footnote to church attendance or the evening news? Despite the fact many have fallen for that misrepresentation, there are many good men who are great dads. They have embraced the God-given role of fatherhood and are impacting their children by helping them to build and live successful lives. Conversely, the one common denominator of many of society’s ills—pornography, human trafficking, abortion, rape, murder, alcoholism, teen suicide, and incarceration—can be traced to absentee fathers. According to statistics, 63 percent of youth suicides are from fatherless homes (US Dept. Of Health/Census) –five times the average. 90 percent of all homeless and runaway children are

from fatherless homes – 32 times the average. 85 percent of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes – 20 times the average. (Center for Disease Control). 80 percent of rapists with anger problems come from fatherless homes –14 times the average. (Justice & Behavior, Vol 14, p. 403-26). 71 percent of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes – nine times the average. (National Principals Association Report). From these statistics, it is easy to see that men who have abdicated their roles as fathers is the single greatest problem in society today. Dads need to step up to assume their rightful roles as leaders of the family. Kids are looking at them, and studying them, to see if they are really going to protect them, lead them and love them. It is time to once again make it cool to honor those men who have stood up to be great dads, grand-dads or mentors. Enter the That’s My Dad Movement. This movement is designed to honor the man, not necessarily one’s dad, who most impacted one’s life. The movement, inspired by the new book “That’s My Dad!” just released by Broadstreet Publishing, asks people young and old to visit www.ThatsMyDadMovement.com and follow four simple instructions to honor that man and to encourage others to

follow suit. It’s time to breathe new life into a once proud holiday and take part. The truth everyone wants to, or at least yearn to, stand up and shout, “That’s my dad!”

Neglected Mix Total Joy

eet Philomena from Eleventh Hour Rescue. Philomena is a very sweet Labrador Retriever/Hound mix who is about 10 years old and weighs 50 pounds. This gentle girl arrived as a medical neglect case, and everyday that goes by, she is putting weight on and getting stronger. She epitomizes strength, perseverance, love and humor. Philomena’s foster mom says she is a total joy to have around the house, gets along with dogs and cats and listens well. Don’t be fooled by her age; she has quite a personality and is up a flight of stairs in two or three leaps. Philomena is completely housetrained,

walks nicely on a leash and does great in the car. Please consider giving this loving, senior girl the forever home she deserves. To read more about Philomena, to com-

Patient Family Needed For Corgle

eet Paul Texas from Eleventh Hour Rescue. Paul is a rare Australian Corgle - a blend of Australian Shepherd, Beagle and Corgi. This handsome guy is two years old and was recently returned to Eleventh Hour because his adopters found his anxiety and quirkiness difficult to handle. Paul is great with other dogs and loves people of all ages; but will need a family with patience, training and TLC to overcome his fears. He is very affectionate, obedient and even goofy at times. Paul also rides great in the car, is crate-trained and loves to play with his toys. He is waiting for his for-

ever family who will give him confidence-building experiences that will help him blossom into a happy, self-assured companion. To read more about Paul, to
