and finding a common ground.”

Formerly the pastor of Church of the Savior, Rev. George Wong stands outside St. John’s in Maui.

ev. George Wong will tell you that in coming to the Church of the Savior five years ago, he overshot his original plan by 2,500 miles. He grew up in Los Angeles, had been on the east coast for many years, and had hoped to return to the west one day. He had most recently served a church in southern New Jersey and was looking to make his move. However, he found his search suddenly focusing on parishes in a crescent- shaped area of the northeast: Maryland, New York, Connecticut, Philadelphia, and Northern New Jersey. Wong came to Denville to interview with a committee at Church of the Savior and found the people to be transparent and authentic; he felt that “together we could do good things for the church”. Originally, from the corporate world, Wong found that some parishioners were, too. He knew having those abilities could help to get things done. Also, he found Denville’s setting to be beautiful, and the town had an openness and receptiveness to it. “I always felt welcomed,” Wong shared. He became the reverend of Church of the Savior in July 2017. However, this month, after many years on the east coast, Wong is going back west. Wong says “mahalo” (thanks) to Denville for his time here as he leaves this month to become the Reverend of St. John’s in Kula, in the center of Maui (Hawaii). Recently, Wong reflected on his path to the ministry and his time at Church of the Savior.

Wong was not originally a minister. He attended UCLA where his father encouraged him to study business. After graduation, he started at TRW in the finance area. However, that field wasn’t relational enough for him; he wanted more interaction with people. Wong went back to school and got his MBA. He got a position in International Business. In that field, he got to work with a variety of people and enjoyed learning their stories and their cultures. His job took him to Washington, DC. There, he became increasingly active in a church in Maryland. It was during that time that he felt the calling to pursue ordination. Wong attended and graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary and was ordained at the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul (Washington National Cathedral).Wongnoted, “I [have] a love of joining together groups. I’ve always enjoyed working with a wide range of people

In reflecting on his five years at Church of the Savior, it was establishing relationships that was important to him. He mentioned some in particular. He expressed appreciation to the mayor of Denville and the administration, noting that he enjoyed working with them on several occasions. He shared that the church has developed a relationship with community’s seniors through the church hosting a senior luncheon every month. Also, the church has a developed a nice partnership with its tenant, Vision Loss Alliance of New Jersey. (That group helps visually impaired people with daily living skills.) Wong noted that he helped re-establish the Denville community clergy group and also worked with other episcopal churches in the area and with the diocese. Wong said that Church of the Savior is part of the fabric of the community and is looking for more things on which to collaborate.

church can offer worship both in person andWhenonline.asked about his most memorable moment at the church, Wong admitted that what comes to mind was not a happy event, but the support he received made it memorable. His mother died in July 2021. Due to COVID-19, an in-person service could not be held; it was done online. “I got tons of cards and emails and calls and there was an in person visit; a lot of people popped online to the service,” Wong shared. Afterward, he was spent and had to take two weeks off; the parish made sure he did not have to worry about anything while he was gone.

Wong shared that a challenging time in his Denville ministry was the pandemic. “We had to figure out what to do when we couldn’t get together, but there again the skills of many people in the church came into play. We got an online service going and we just tried to communicate as well as we could about what we were doing,” he said. Some of the offerings of the church, such as the senior luncheon, had to be suspended for a while. However, the church communicated to the community that it was for everyone’s safety. Wong noted that part of the pandemic challenge was having a robust service, but at the same time keeping people safe. That resulted in the service being sometimes online and then back in the church, but then back online again when the virus ramped up. One positive Wong saw out of the experience is that a way to view worship online was developed. Now, the

That’s the most distensible organ in your body, and it contains many of the hunger hormones and the stretch receptors that encourage you to fill your stomach to capacity. In previous years, the festival has brought together an average of about 20 food trucks, ranging in culinary options from beef kabobs to pulled pork sandwiches, lemonade, macaroni and cheese, baked potato varieties, wood-oven pizzas, empanadas, different nacho varieties, tacos, bacon-wrapped sausages, Greek gyros, donuts, Italian ices, ice cream, and of course coffee.

Assemblyman Brian Bergen, heading the organization of the day’s festivities, is excited.

On that day, 15 food trucks (so far), beer stands, and a colorful spread of children’s play centers will all tally up at Denville’s Gardner Field for the town’s annual Food Truck Festival. All are welcomed to come and hang out, grab some lunch, dabble a bit at different stands, listen to some great music, get some sunshine and fresh air, and help out an excellent cause.

“And as soon as the festival is over,” says Bergen, “we’re already planning the next one. It’s always a good success and it’s worth the effort to make it happen.”

The Denville Food Truck Festival has been running for five years now, says Bergen, and came together to support Project Playground, a town effort to spruce up Gardner Field and, in particular, its lush playground area. Immediately successful, raising in previous years anywhere in between the range of $35,000 to $150,000 for the field’s maintenance, the festival passed under the responsibility of Bergen, a West Point graduate and former Apache helicopter pilot in the Army with 8 years in uniform.

Under Bergen, the festival now provides financial support to local veterans in town at the American Legion (Post 390) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (Post 2519), both in Denville. with the town. For those running the event, necessary items to check off the list prior to launching such an event include health permits, fire permits, the placement of ATM machines, the arrangement of the acoustic systems, and the booking of bands. The town provides services such as a police presence.

Each year has brought in upwards of 3,500 visitors, and the environment is always warm, fun, and casual. And all for a wonderful cause. Added attractions include raffles, a petting zoo, laser tag, tattoos, pumpkin picking, and a local vendor’s mart of about 30 local businesses offering their goods and services.Asked which food truck he is most looking forward to, Assemblyman Bergen declined to pick just “They’reone.all excellent, really,” he says, adding the fact that each of these trucks, although not in direct competition with each other during the event, bring a competitive edge to the day and come prepared for the opportunity to showcase their best skills, and even bust out some new, experimental takes on recipes that have worked for them for a long time.

For example, he recently had a release party at Morristown’s The Homestead where he collaborated with many professional musicians who have played on albums of many well-known celebrities. Syvarth is especially proud of his relationship with Tom Carbone who produced “Silver Lake Boulevard.”Thisisbecause

but is also extremely fond of jazz musician Bobby McFerrin. Even though Syvarth jokingly admits people laugh when they learn of his love for McFerrin due to his success of the song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”, in the 1980’s, he remains firm that he would love to play alongside the jazz great one day.

“He is one of the greatest of all time, so he has been a huge inspiration for me,” Syvarth said. The local songwriter has even recorded covers of McFerrin’s songs on Spotify and believes jazz musicians are more well versed than musicians from other genres.

According to Syvarth, for himself, Carbone, and every musician who gave a hand to this project, the recording of the album took “a lot of blood, sweat, and tears.”

He had the privilege of playing with Rick Chamberlain, the former principal trombonist for the New York City Ballet, who unfortunately lost his life to cancer a short time ago. “The album was the last thing he recorded and it’s meaningful to me as he was always very generous towards me. This project was the last time I had a chance to record with him,” he said.

Beginning his educational career as a member of Americorps at a school in Newark, he’s also held various positions with the New Jersey Department of Education, ran a charter school in Paterson, and was a county school business administrator. He’s been with Morris County Vocational Technical School since 2004.

One of the projects that Moffitt is most proud of is coming due to the partnership with County College of Morris. A new building will be erected at County College of Morris where students can earn college credits while being dually enrolled at their respective high school. The new building is dubbed the Morris County Career Training Center. The hope is to open the building by the 2024-2025 school

In June, Moffitt was named Morris County Superintendent of the Year. He’s now in the running for three regional honors. If he passes that, he’ll be on to the state and national competitions. For Moffitt, he appreciates the nomination and being honored by his peers.

cott Moffitt is quick to give credit to the superintendents in the Morris County school districts that his technical school serves. He wouldn’t be able to offer all the programming he does without their help.

“Theyear.new building will allow us to serve another 500 students in their junior and senior years of high school. It’s dual enrollment and earning college credit. We’re trying our best to give kids a leg up in the world,” Moffitt said.

“It’s always a great honor to be recognized by peers and colleagues. I have a school that can sometimes be perceived as competing with local high schools. I’m a regional superintendent in the sense that we have students from all different municipalities. For me, it was a great honor to be recognized by my peers and I think it really speaks to the county in general and the type of leaders that are in this county that we’re all able to work together to create new programs and grow together,” Moffitt shares.

“What I’m most proud of generally is we haven’t forgotten about the more traditional programs, we’ve been able to strengthen the traditional programs while adding new things. We still offer electrical and plumbing, carpentry, auto body. Those students all needed an option as well. We’ve been able to continue to meet a wide range of student needs and maintain our groups while we grew. Within that, we’ve been able to recreate and build new full time programs,” Moffitt says.

children’s opportunities.

Sadly, play is declining in communities across the United States.

utdoor community gathering spaces mean everything to families. What better way to harness the Power of Play than with a new Thinkscape. The first of its kind in New Jersey, Museum of Makers + Innovators (MOMI) are launching their playful learning pocket park soon at MorrisThat’sMarketplace.atthecorner of East Hanover Avenue and Martin Luther King Avenue, adjacent to the Hanover Township border.

“PLLs create skill-building experiences in local community spaces as children are always learning, and research shows continued on page 17

“It means a great deal to us that we can bring such innovative work to New Jersey,” she says, of the multigenerational learning and connection-building transformative public space.

According to founder Sara Sorenson, early on in the pandemic they were inspired by Dr. Kathy Hirsh-Pasek’s work at Temple University — to connect the science of learning with the benefits of play, and her team’s design of Philly’s Urban Thinkscape.

They say none of this would be possible without the support and generosity of their families, donors and sponsors.

MOMI regularly hears from parents that they need a safe place where their children can get messy, experiment and explore. And while it will take time to build a world-class children’s museum where one can do all that, they hope to promote Thinkscape as something families need to make time for.

Non-profit Plans to Launch NJ’s Inaugural ‘Thinkscape’ in Morris Township

One of the best feelings of walking into a children’s museum is one of freedom. There are no rules, no expectations, according to Sorenson.Shesays they want to create that unrestricted awareness for visitors to MOMI once it is built. They are free to use all of their senses to discover new things at their own pace.

“In order for our children to be prepared with the skills to succeed in future careers, they need to develop 21st century skills,” says co-founder Nicole Pittaluga. “Children’s museums provide affordable, accessible opportunities for developing collaboration, critical thinking, growth mindset, communication, citizenship and creativity.”

New Jersey has a world class science museum, amazing art and historical museums. These institutions are great assets to our state. But we do not have a state-ofthe-art children’s museum built around the visitor — i.e. children and their families.

Sorenson says they also want visitors to know they can be an advocate in their own community to create more child and family friendlyMOMIinfrastructure.wantsfamilies to engage with the park’s many playful learning zones, encouraging them to visit the park regularly.

Science museums are traditionally designed to teach specific scientific concepts. Art museums are built around collections and historical museums are designed to teach us about the history of place and time.

If you have driven on East Hanover Avenue in Morris Township, you will see that construction of Morris Marketplace is underway. Santos de Araujo says together with the property’s landscape designer and MOMI’s team of experts in early childhood development and design of children’s museum exhibits, they have created six playful learning zones to be installed in the park.

“We are hoping to raise $100,000 to cover the cost of the project,” treasurer Cathy Paugh says. “These gathering spaces are a much needed way to bring communities together. I would compare it to the feel of a downtown where you can meet and greet others and get to connect on a new level.”

They anticipate the park will open late fall or early winter 2023, and are still working with the site developer. However, the successful completion of Morris Marketplace Thinkscape is dependent on the amount of community financial support they receive.

MOMI will be designed to inspire a lifelong love of learning. The experiences at the intersection of art, science and nature will be open-ended for following one’s natural curiosity. Caregivers can get in on the fun and wake up their own curious nature.

The love a family can provide to someone suffering from OCD or any mental illness can help immensely. This book is aimed primarily at those who are in pain, their families, and professionals serving this population as well.

For me, the turning point came when as a young adult, my father confided in me that he had OCD and was still able to make a good life for himself. He also told me he would always love me and believed I could get better.

My father who taught at several universities throughout New Jersey including Ramapo College and Saint Peters University grew up in a time when mental health was not discussed and was forced to live in silence for a great period of time. One such local psychotherapist said “Evan’s writing style makes his book enjoyable and eye opening for people struggling with OCD, their family members and clinicians in mental health. Evan’s story can resonate with thousands of people suffering from OCD.”

In the past, I have worked with a variety of families throughout New Jersey, forming and working with them in support groups. There is no magic pill, and this book is not going to solve all problems associated with the illness. However, I sincerely hope it lends a compassionate and compelling voice to the mental health community.

That changed everything and, in my book, “Family Illness,” this beautiful story is told. My father passed away from Covid in 2020 and I never got the chance to present him with a copy. At this point, I have started under the tutelage of Livingston Author and Entrepreneur Barry Farber to place my books in non-traditional settings. For example, I am in the process of seeking partnerships with cafes and restaurants to place my book by the register rather than having it get lost in a bookstore surrounded by thousands of other books. At these locations, I will be providing signed copies of the book along with brochures and other information about mental health.

To this day, more than 20 years after the attacks, the memorial remains an important part of life here. Every week, Morris County tends to that memorial. We have people cleaning the walkways and the pool, replacing the flowers and wiping down the plaques. It is visited almost daily by residents and visitors from outside our county.
