If one lives locally, they are beyond over all of the cold weather that stormed through and are ready to dive into summer. Whether it is making a splash in the pool, sizzling burgers on the grill or venturing out into the world, many people try to make each and every summer more memorable than the last. However, with today’s society, teens are more frequently on their computers, phones and other devices posting about their summers rather than basking in the glorious sun and actually enjoying it.

Get off that phone this season and make it memorable by adding and checking off some of these places to that summer bucket list in order to spice up the summer!

At this notorious park, the activities are endless! No matter what time of the year, there is constant entertainment roaming the greenery whether it is musicians, artists, biking and more! Have kids? No problem! There are 21 playgrounds for the little guys to roam as well as the overall park itself is their playground with all of the beautiful scenery.

Molly Conway of Flanders, a junior at Mt. Olive High School, Flanders, recalls her first time going to Central Park: “I liked how there was so much to look at and how there were so many people just out and about. You don’t see that a lot anymore since everyone is always glued to their phones.” When asked about her fondest memory about her trip, Conway states “Definitely my favorite part was the carousel and just the nature itself. Especially the trees, everything was so pure and nature like.” Be sure to stop by the zoo and explore all of the different types of animals from sea lions to parakeets. Admission for the zoo is $18 for adults, $13 for ages 3-12, $15 for seniors, and free for those two and

Circle Bowl & Entertainment, Ledgewood For those who aren’t the best at bowling, Circle Lanes has it covered. It’s the perfect spot for birthdays with their arcade with countless games, rock wall climbing, and laser tag!

Brandon Foushee of Budd Lake, a sophomore at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y., often goes to Circle Lanes. He said “I really like Circle Lanes because of everything!

I love to go bowling during the week and that is when it’s cheapest to go. I especially like to go back for laser tag. The laser tag arena is a great place where friends can play for a low cost.”

It has a really rustic feel to it and the burgers are amazing.” Batsides continues “[Morristown] is a city-like place for us if we don’t want to travel too far like

to the actual city. It has really good restaurants in the area and it just seems prettier than any normal kind of place around our area. It kind of reminds me of a small part of Manhattan!” Batsides proceeded further about his love for the small city by stating “I like going there because it’s a place to always keep you busy. Governor Cody Aims To Prevent Teen Suicide

W

ith teen suicide on the rise throughout the state, Senator Richard Codey (D-Livingston), recently unveiled a $1 million plan to combat depression and help educate people on mental health.

On July 1, the former governor introduced a bill that will award a $1 million grant within the NJ Department of Education (DOE) for school districts to hire mental health counselors.

The NJ Department of Health will determine which school districts are awarded grants. The DOE will report on progress by 2021. There will be specialized training workshops to non-licensed, auxiliary school staff who interact with students and a creation of a statewide “Teen Suicide and Depression Task Force”

charged with developing additional methods to combat teen suicide and depression and report back to the state legislature by July 2019.

“School workers such as secretaries, security guards and teacher’s aides need the tools and training to recognize bullying, early warning signs and symptoms of mental health issues, and the proper steps to resolve conflict and prevent potential disasters,” declared Governor Codey at a press conference at Liberty Middle School in West Orange in May. According to the New Jersey Youth Suicide Report, 2,731 people age 10 to 24 were treated in an emergency room for non-fatal suicide attempts/ self-inflicted injuries from 2013 to 2015. Also, according to the New Jersey Dept. of Health, from 2007 to 2016, suicides among children ages 10 to 18

rose by 16.6 percent.

“Too many young lives are being lost,” Codey said at the press conference. “New Jersey must act now to better equip all school employees to help

identify at-risk students and prevent teen suicides and other mental health related incidents in their schools.”

Florham Park Has Challenged Residents To Stay Healthy

ver 40 residents signed up to accept Florham Park’s Wellness Challenge to follow a healthy lifestyle this summer. They will follow a program which offers residents a variety of activities- such as yoga, kick-boxing and health screenings- they can fit into their own schedules and earn points for doing them. At the end of the summer, the points will be turned into tickets for a tricky tray with healthy lifestyle prizes. The program is free, except for any items purchased at a farmer’s market, and Florham Park residents ages 18 and older could register for it. The program, which is endorsed by The Mayors Wellness Campaign, was developed by members of the Pequannock Health Department.

“Everyone was so excited at the kick-off,” said Gina Mc-

Coneghy, a health educator and health inspector for the Pequannock Health Department who came up with the concept for the program.

She took the idea to Pequannock Assistant Health Officer Gail Gratzel. “Gail really made it happen,” said McConeghy.

With help from Lauren Lombardo, an intern from George Washington University working towards her master’s in public health, the program was developed. It was rolled out to a number of towns, including Florham Park.

What excited Gratzel about the concept was that it allowed people to do activities within their own schedule and to try something new and see if they liked it. For example, someone who had never done it before could try yoga.

McConeghy commented, “It gives them a structure to do that.” It opens doors to differ-

ent healthy experiences. There are many area vendors offering free sessions for the challenge.

Among the vendors participating are CKO Kickboxing, Retro Fitness, USA Fit for Life, Powerhouse Gym and 3 Birds Yoga.

There are also special events, such as Olympia from USA Fit for Life, leading a special exer-

cise session at the recreation center. There is also a weekly run-walk gathering at the recreation center which allows those who are in the challenge to gather and socialize.

Jenkinson’s Boardwalk, Point Pleasant If one lives in New Jersey, hitting up the beach is one of the top places to be during the summer. Why not go back to where everyone’s first beach experience all started by going to Jenkinson’s Boardwalk. This

family friendly beach has numerous activities for all ages from arcades, mini golf and rides to restaurants, sweet shops and bars. Not to mention their notorious aquarium and the beach itself!

“What a perfect way to kick off the summer!” said Dejesus.

“I loved that we were able to be active and run around and do whatever we pleased. My friends and I enjoyed being able to be kids again by playing all the games that you wanted to but never did as a kid.

And to top it all off, to end the night they had fireworks on the beach when we went! It makes me feel nostalgic and in comparison to living in the woods, I would go here all the time if I could.”

who have never seen the movie, watch it before going to see the show in person so you get the gist of what’s actually going on. But I bought a prop bag and it was fun to get involved with the cast as the show went on.”

When asked as far as why she loved her experience, she said “It was fun getting ready and going out late to see the show with my friends and family. And once you actually got there, the people there are just so much fun and really make you laugh.”

Codey feels that social media is a huge factor in teen depression and suicide. Instead of being outside with friends or being active, bullying follows kids home onto Snapchat, Twit-

ter or Facebook, making their lives even worse, he said.

With the recent suicides of designer Kate Spade and renowned chef, Anthony Bourdain, depression can affect anyone, he said. The governor hopes these deaths may get people to talk about depression.

“The biggest thing for mental health is to overcome the stigma of depression,” he said.

“Teenage suicide is not a comfortable issue for people to talk about.”

n May 22, Hanover To w n s h i p resident George Coppola received a “Certificate of Recognition from Morris County Clerk Ann F. Grossi, during the county’s 3rd Annual “Cissy Laureys” Award and Recognition Ceremony held at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Coppola was honored for his outstanding service and commitment to others.

In keeping with May’s designation as “Older Americans Month,” the county had been seeking nominees in April who best exemplify the

“qualities of compassion, dedication and service to (our) older Americans and physically challenged citizens.”

The Hanover Township Committee felt that Coppola was the perfect fit for

this recognition and nominated him for an award.

Coppola’s many volunteer roles have distinguished him for his service to his home town and the Morris County communi-

ty. In addition to having faithfully served on the Hanover Township Committee and the Hanover Township Board of Education, Coppola invests much of his time advancing

the compassionate work of the Knights of Columbus and the Seeing Eye. His volunteer work also supports the Hanover Township Veterans Alliance and Hanover Township’s senior citi-

zens. He currently serves as president of the Hanover Township Senior Citizens’ Club, and a member of both the Landmark Commission and the Cultural Arts Committee.
