Senior Volunteer Award Presented To 89-Year Old East Hanover Woman

“It was therapy for me and I earned money doing that,” says Politi, “Mostly drapery, any kind of window treatment. I was able to establish myself with a company that I could purchase lines. And I did that for quite a few years. It’s been five years now since I’ve stopped since I got older.”

Politi was around, and at times responsible, for plenty of organizations’ origins. For one, Politi’s children participated in the Police Athletic League (PAL), which was just becoming established when Politi got attached.

PAL provided football for boys and cheerleading for girls. Politi was known for making skirts.

Another organization Politi joined was the Recreation Commission in 1978. Here she met the now Mayor Joseph Pannullo, who nominated her for the award. The

Recreation Commission is now the present-day Hanover Recreation Department.

However, Politi’s favorite is the “Friends of East Hanover,” a non-profit organization that helps special needs children and adults in the community. Politi has been an active member for about 42 years, a majority of the group’s existence.

“I wasn’t the initial one who started the group, but I joined up with it

a year later. They needed someone to be a clown for Halloween, so I offered and that’s how I started with it,” says Politi, “Having nine healthy children and then seeing these kids try so hard, it humbles you and makes you feel good that you can do something for them.”

Another memorable time of hers was working with the St. Rose of Lima Church. She and her husband are considered found-

ers of the church because it was initially nonexistent.

Politi served as president and vice president of the St. Rose of Lima Rosary Altar Society, cared for altar linens and hand sewed baptismal cloths, and sang in the choir.

Politi’s latest endeavor, in fact, is the Ralph Politi Jr. Memorial Foundation, a non-profit that awards scholarships Hanover Park and Whippany Park High School qualifying seniors, as well as provide for anyone else in need, set up in memory of her late son.

“Whatever you sow, you reap. Helping others was a thank you to the Good Lord for all he had given us. Healthy children is number one, and decent kids. They weren’t perfect, but they were decent.”

ed Politi with the recognition during the Cecilia “Cissy” Laureys Senior Volunteer Award Ceremony at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township on May 22, Politi’s children Mary, Karen, Donna, Deborah, Rachel, Susan, Rita, Jimmy, and Ralph Jr. (who was there in spirit) were all in attendance.

“I have to really credit my husband and my family because they always stood behind me with whatever I did,” she said. “I always had them to back me up. It was their award besides mine. It seems funny to get an award for something that you enjoy doing. You feel humbled because it’s something you love doing. For me, it’s a payback.”

he stories at Billy and Madeline’s are endless. My wife Nancy and I would work late hours in our early years of marriage and stop in at least twice a week for dinner. We became super close with Billy and Madeline. Nancy and I are very thankful for our relationship with such wonderful people.

had their first kiss, fell in love, got engaged, and some ladies went into labor there.

Shortly thereafter, Madeline, who lived a block away, was working on a Girl Scout Badge. She was riding her bicycle past the tavern one day, when a thunder and lightning storm forced her and her girlfriend to seek shelter until the storm passed. Billy welcomed them in and brought two sodas to their table. The girls told their story when they got home and never forgot Billy’s kindness

and generosity.

When Billy opened the first pizzeria in Whippany, Madeline was a frequent customer.

As the years went on, their paths crossed many times as they would see each other out socially.

Their first date was a candle light dinner and their next date was a fishing trip.

Billy, with the help of his sister Celeste, took wonderful care of his aging parents in their home above the bar, a quality continued on page 6

Alzheimer’s Association Greater New Jersey Relocates To Florham Park

By Jason Cohen he Alzheimer’s Association Greater New Jersey Chapter (AAGNJ) will now be able to better serve the state in 14 counties. On May 29, it announced the relocation of its North Jersey offices to Florham Park.

Formerly located in Totowa, it will now reside at 23 Vreeland Road, Florham Park. Florham Park Mayor Mark Taylor was set to lead the ribbon cutting ceremony at the facility on June 14 followed by a private reception with guest speaker Dr. Jim Hendrix, director of Global Science Initiatives for the Alzheimer’s Association.

“The Greater New Jersey Chapter has established a deep presence within the state for almost 40 years,” said Cheryl Ricci-Francione, executive director of AAGNJ in a statement. “This relocation allows us to expand our offerings and presence, where there is an ever-growing need and demand for diverse Alzheimer’s and dementia care, support and community education programs.”

Ricci-Francione explained that as part of the chapter’s grand opening it is partnering with RWJBarnabas Health and Livingston Township, to “Paint the Town Purple.” This is a component of the Alzheimer’s

Association’s Brain Awareness Month in June, which in cooperation with local officials, community groups, organizations and businesses, the chapter is encouraging the community to display purple. The goal of these decorations is to raise awareness about the importance of brain health and understanding how to deal with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

“One of the most visible initiatives is being undertaken by RWJBarnabas Health, with the illumination of the exterior of Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston,” she said. “This prominent display will serve as a reminder that dementia is something we need to talk about openly and candidly to erase the stigma. June is an ideal opportunity to demonstrate support of all those with Alzheimer’s and those who care for them.”

The association’s 2018 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures Report reveals how challenging living with the disease is and how it affects families and caregivers. In New Jersey, the report indicates: More than 180,000 residents have Alzheimer’s or other dementia – this is expected to rise by 16.7 percent by 2025; 453,000 caregivers are providing 516 million hours of unpaid

care annually valued at $6.517 billion; total Medicaid costs among statewide residents age 65 and older exceed $2.011 billion – this is expected to rise by 27.7 percent by 2025.

Ricci-Francione noted that Florham Park is at the center of the AAGNJ Chapter’s geographic service area.

“From the suburbs to the cities, our new location allows us to advance and strengthen our partnerships with leading hospitals and health systems, senior housing providers and local senior/public health agencies to assist even more

people with Alzheimer’s and dementia and their caregivers,” Ricci-Francione said. “What better place to lay down new roots than a town that refers to itself as ‘A Community of Volunteers?’”

In 1980, after an eight-year courtship, Billy and Madeline were married at Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, in Whippany, where they were both baptized and had an “Open Invitation” wedding at the tavern. It was a celebration that the town still talks about.

Madeline reflected on seeing the bar for the first time after the fire, “as I walked through what remained of the almost unrecognizable building, the feeling of grief was overwhelming. Knowing that our future would depend on our disposition and not the circumstance. Looking around for the last time, all that came to mind was the indescribable relief I felt when Billy was safely in my arms outside the burning building. Although this tragedy has taken so much, it has given us the time to really enjoy our

Billy and Madeline created a place where there were no strangers, only friends that have not met yet.

It is Billy’s fault that I have become the angler that I am today and very thankful. I learned from the best. We are very sad, yet super happy for Billy and Madeline to finally slow down and focus on entertaining each other as they have done for others over the years. Madeline once told me, “we don’t live in reality, we live in a tavern entertaining people to escape from reality for a brief moment.” Billy and Madeline love all their customers, friends and family and I know they will miss them.

We wish nothing but health and happiness to both Billy and Madeline. Thank you for all the stories and memories which are vaulted in our hearts forever.

High School Hosts Gallery To Shed Light On Genocides

By Kerry Breen anover Park Regional High School hosted the 2018 Genocide Studies Gallery Walk, a project put together by students throughout the year.

The walk, which focuses on multiple genocides throughout history and the history associated with them, is meant to spread awareness and inspire efforts to prevent future hatred.

The presentation this year was themed “Looking from My Perspective.” This is the seventh year that the project has been presented.

“We wanted to raise awareness of the Holocaust, and how important it is to basically get kids to know about it, as well as for them to treat everybody respectfully and treat everybody equally,” said Jamie Boszko, a history teacher in the district who spearheaded the project and teaches a genocide studies course at Hanover Park.

“Out of that, it was ‘Well, we need to focus more on this Holocaust education, we need to get everybody on the same page, and it’s important that everybody respects everyone else, and to learn from the lessons of the past.”

“We want to make a better future for our kids, and other generations,” Boszko continued.

The project dominated a hallway at Hanover Park, using multiple classrooms and the corridor to present the walk. According to Matt Cardoso, a senior student who was involved in the event, the project was school-wide, with students from multiple classes and grades participating.

“We kind of started, in the beginning of the semester, with smaller projects such as printing things out, and we did a project where we had to put three items that somebody would put in a suitcase if they were told to leave their house, and then it kind of turned into each of the little projects culminating with the different classes, and putting this all together,” said Cardoso, who is taking genocide studies as an elective course and was involved with the walk for the first time this year.

The walk opened with a model of the gate that had been the entrance to Auschwitz. Attendees then followed footprints that led from one room to another. Work in the hallway highlighted families that were lost. Students were tasked with finding pic-

The rooms highlighted the history of different genocides, including detailed information about the stages of genocides throughout history and around the world.

Stages included classification, discrimination, persecution, extermination, and denial, among others. Another room highlighted the Nuremburg trials, with paper continued on page 9

“We did research on Righteous Among the Nations, researched survivors, and they put together this wonderful exhibit that encompasses everything, not just the Holocaust, but to let the message know that it still happens,” said Boszko. “So, Darfur is occurring, and Rwanda happened, and Cambodia happened, so what can we do to kind of stop it from continuing?”

Sophomore Hannah Tennbrock said, “It kind of lets you see, you know, never let it happen again. There’s also a room down the hall with all the buttons, and there’s so many, but that’s barely ten percent of the kids that died.”

ued, she and her younger sister were sent away to live with Christian families through an underground movement designed to protect children. Both she, her sister, and her parents survived.

Dahme currently focuses on Holocaust education, and speaks at schools and other venues about her experiences.

“In the last few years, we’ve tried to incorporate more survivors, so students are getting more of a personal aspect into what happened,” said Boszko. “While I’m great, it’s a lot better when you have a survivor, or a second-generation survivor that’s in the room, that’s actually speaking.

The kids can connect with it more. Trying to make it more personal and more connected to the kids is how we’ve tried to change it.”

Boszko explained, “We work first and second semester [on the walk. This year’s presentation focused on the impact of the Holocaust on children. We came up with the ‘Button Up Against Hate,’ where every button represented a child [who died].

Our goal throughout the year was to kind of collect as many buttons as we possibly could, and display them like we did, as button children. When you give a number, 1.5 million or 6 million, you don’t necessarily understand, like what does that look like? But when you have something visual that you can actually show them, it kind of clicks a little bit.”

The buttons were collected through donations, many of which came from the community. While they had aimed to collect 1.5 million buttons, just more than 100,000 were donated. At the event, a poster announced that each button represented about 14 children.

The event also included speeches from survivors, including Maude Dahme, a “hidden child” who was born in Europe in 1936. Her family first fled to Holland to avoid persecution, but as the war contin-

Florham Park Opens New Trail

T

he new Stobaeus-Briarwood Trail in Florham Park had a recent ceremonial opening as the county Board of Freeholders, Park Commission and Florham Park officials joined to cut a ribbon that not only celebrated a local green space but one of countywide importance.

This is the first completed trail project in the county funded through the Morris County Preservation Trust and its offshoot, the new county Trail Construction Grant Program, which has a long-term goal of connecting the county’s many open spaces, to make them accessible to county residents.

“Construction of new trails is a great way to encourage residents and visitors to explore and enjoy the beautiful landscape of Morris County,’’ said Freeholder Director Doug Cabana. “The trails make our

plentiful open spaces accessible to everyone, connecting greenways, enhancing recreational opportunities, and improving the quality of life for all residents.

“We are proud to be the first completed project in the Morris County Trail Construction Grant Program and are very excited to open the newly constructed Trail, fittingly on National Trails Day,’’ said Florham Park Councilman Charles Malone.

Florham Park began seeking county open space funds as early as 2009, as the borough purchased segments of land needed for the trail.

The county trust fund provided a total of $720,000 for 2.93 acres covering six properties as a planned addition to Stobaeus Park, which is now linked by the new trail to the Briarwood School.

Mt. Olive Woman Directs Dress For Success With More Partnerships And Fundraisers

By Cheryl Conway ith more partnerships and fundraisers, the new director of Dress For Success Northern N.J. hopes to grow the non-profit to support a greater number of women seeking jobs and confidence to succeed in the workforce.

Kimberly Iozzi, 45, of Budd Lake began on April 30 in her new role as executive director of Dress For Success Northern N.J. covering 10 counties throughout the state.

As the former executive director of the Newton Housing Authority for 15 years, Iozzi brings years of experience in government and nonprofit management, dedicating her entire career to empowering low and moderate-income families achieve economic self-sufficiency, personal development and growth.

When she saw the position open for Dress For Success advertised through the Center For Nonprofits, Iozzi says she jumped at the opportunity.

“I was looking for a change,” she says, as she describes her passion for helping

women succeed in the workforce.

Dress for Success Northern NJ- 10 Counties, serves Morris, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Bergen, Essex, Middlesex, Somerset, Union and Passaic counties.

While it is an affiliate of the Dress for Success Worldwide organization, it is an independent 501©3, responsible for its own fundraising and operations. It relies solely on corporate, foundation and individual contributions to serve its clients at no cost to them.

The mission of the organization is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

“The goal is to provide all developmental tools, get the interview and do well and to build their confidence,” says Iozzi.

All of the programs are offered at no cost to participants. The organization served more than 1,500 women last year, ages 18 to 64, and is well on its way to dou-

“We run nine programs,” she says, and have 600 volunteers with three paid staff members that manage the programs.

One of the programs is a Career Center in which women get assistance with their resumes, interview and online job searches.

Another program, Steps For Success offers a 10-week job ready boot camp for unemployed women to break down barriers and provide an extra push to assist a woman in getting a job.

“The women come from all different backgrounds,” says Iozzi, not just those who are disadvantaged. Some are stayat-home moms trying to get back into the workforce, others are first time clients trying to enter the workforce.

Other programs include mentoring, technology skills, time management and budgeting and Foundation For Success in which women are provided tips on how to keep their employment.

A Professional Women’s Group is also offered to provide monthly networking

meetings featuring speakers to discuss professional issues, personal growth, budgeting and balancing.

The Mobile is another program in which a van visits agencies by appointment and operates as a boutique with volunteer stylists on board to play dress up with suits and help women build confidence.

“Its largest suiting was for 70 people,” notes Iozzi. Women are given a referral sheet, are sized and pick their outfits from colors of suits and shoe styles from heels to flats, and also receive a one hour training session.

“It’s amazing to see the transformation that happens,” says Iozzi. The Mobile “brings suits to them, does training,” covering interview tips, how to engage, how to shake hands, what questions to ask.

With the main boutique at the Madison Community House in Madison, Iozzi hopes to expand to include satellite offices in each of the 10 counties “so people can donate, get clothing and training,” closer to where they live.

Bridge to Success is another program in which clients can engage in a bimonthly job search after they go through steps of training, explains Iozzi.

“This bridge helps them with their one on one to give them the tools,” she says, to succeed.

Since women are served for free, Iozzi stresses it is “so important to have grants and donations.”

While the majority of the women are referred to Dress For Success by partnering agencies, the organization will connect with all women who need assistance. Some partners include the Women’s Center at the County College of Morris in Randolph, and Jersey Battered Women’s Service.

“We need more referral agencies to refer clients to us,” says Iozzi, “partnerships from every level. We are looking for community ambassadors” to hold suit drives for suits, shoes, handbags and jewelry, “whatever makes up a professional. Or host a fundraiser or empower hours to donate a percentage to Dress For Success.

“We need to catch up with our donations so we can grow moving forward,” says Iozzi. With “only four of us on staff we definitely need support.”

Decks And Pools Splash Summer With Fun

By Ricki Demarest t’s always fun to enjoy family and friends during special get togethers at home, but, in the summertime, enjoying the sun by the side of the pool or grilling on the deck make those times even better.

Now is the time for homeowners to make sure those festive outdoor spaces are ready for fun times to carry on before the leaves begin to fall.

Approximately 50 million American homes have outdoor decks, according to the North American Deck and Railing Association. It’s estimated that about half of them have safety issues. Before the power washer and the planters come out, it’s vital to check for signs of wear such as cracks in decking material, weakened joists, rotted wood and loose railings. Insect invasions from carpenter ants, termites and bees can wreak havoc as well.

Older decks may not be up to present construction codes either. Building codes are updated about every three years, and it’s a good idea to check whether the deck’s guardrails, handrails, lighting, stairs, and landings meet current safety standards. Mold, mildew, and even wooden slat replacement can usually be handled by a

homeowner or contractor.

If the hurdles of maintenance and replacement have been cleared, its time to get down to the nitty gritty of deck cleaning.

Nick O’Donnell, the manager at Homecraft Rental Center in Ledgewood, said customers can usually count on using a pressure washer to initiate deck cleanup.

“People have to pressure wash first, then let it dry for a couple days,” he said. “Then they have to sand the surface and stain it right away,” to create a weather proof and esthetically pleasing surface.

“You have a 90 per cent chance of sanding. You have to do that before you stain – it eliminates peeling.”

Although O’Donnell and his staff make sure to explain how the equipment works, he said most people don’t pay attention. It doesn’t matter. They are always welcome to call back with questions. Deck cleaning comes with eco-friendly options. The web-

site www.house-painintg-info. com lists mixtures that include white vinegar and mild dish soap (good for degreasing and mildew), baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and even OxiClean. All can be diluted with water and used on the deck surface.

The cleaning, scrubbing and maintenance certainly doesn’t stop with the deck. Swimming pools, large and small, demand preparation and routine maintenance to keep them sparkling.

Jim Pagonis, the owner of American Pools in Kenvil said that this year’s longer winter meant that his clients’ in ground pools were “greener” when he got them open.

“Longer winters breed algae in pools,” he said. The more quickly the pool is chemically treated, and the filtration system established, the better it will be for swimming throughout the season.

The do-it-yourself shopping list for pool maintenance should include chemicals such as pool shock, chlorine and a chlorine stabilizer. A telescopic pole with a skimmer head, vacuum head, vacuum hose and pool brush should become best friends with the pool surface over the next few months.

An entire test kit or new test strips are essential. “Test the water with a good test kit every two to three days,” Pagonis emphasized.

He and other pool service professionals are happy to take on the daunting task of creating a safe and beautiful swimming environment. A recent release from the Denville office of the Metro Chapter of the Northeast Spa and Pool Association stated “pool pumps, motors, filters, chlorinators, feeders, salt chlorine generators, heaters, heat pumps, blowers, controls, and more are critical

for pool maintenance and are a lot to keep up with for someone not professionally trained.

For safety, a pool professional will review all aspects of your pool to make sure it is operating safely and doesn’t pose any safety risks. This includes a review of safety barriers (fencing etc.), drain covers and in pool lighting.”

Meanwhile, crews from Champs Pool Service in Budd Lake are also scrambling to ready people’s swimming holes. Everett Demouth, the store manager, said he noticed that above ground pool covers have been filling with water.

“During the fall and spring people aren’t keeping water off covers, and that can collapse the pool,” he noted.

Throughout the swimming season both stores follow up with clients, testing pools and solving any problems that may arise. Demouth said opening an above ground pool costs about $150, while an in ground runs about $350 - $500. Broken equipment, pool cracks and other issues increase the price.

Finally, safety is paramount to enjoying decks and pools to the fullest. In addition to previously mentioned construction and pool chemistry, safety precautions include appropriate child supervision around pools and grills, correct gates, and having life-saving equipment close by. Professional associations such as NESPA (www. nespapool.org) as well as municipal officials can help homeowners who have questions about safety and building code compliance.

With the right planning and execution, the pool and deck can be the go to areas for the family and maybe even the neighborhood to cannonball into summer fun.

Morris County Provides Hope To Residents With Broad Range Of Outreach Services

By Cheryl Conway here there is a will, there is a way, the familiar saying goes, and with hope, anything is possible.

Especially with two vehicles making appearances throughout Morris County bringing services to the people, from treating individuals with drug addiction to providing outreach in a wide range of areas such as homelessness, unemployment, aging, child care and veterans’ services. Hope One vehicle has been in motion for the past year; joining the tandem this fall will be a second vehicle, Navigating Hope.

“The impact of the Morris County Sheriff’s Hope One program on the addiction and mental health communities of Morris County has been tremendous!” says Jennifer Carpinteri, director of Human Services for Morris County since Oct. 2014. “It is now time to offer a broader range of services to expand upon those currently offered by Hope One, the county’s Department of Human Services and the Morris County Community Provider Network.

While the specific details of the Navigating Hope vehicle are still being finalized, Carpinteri says “the outreach vehicle will provide a comfortable, confidential way to deliver services and connect with individuals who have had difficulty navigating and accessing services through the traditional means of provision. Use of mobile technology will be an important component to this work, as it provides for the greatest access to resources.

“All human service related resources will be made available to provide on-site services as scheduled or requested by a

municipality, business, school or provider,” she adds.

“Navigating Hope, the mobile community assistance access center, will travel to different locations throughout Morris County, bringing services out into communities to help residents identify their short-term needs and provide additional case management supports necessary to navigate the complex systems of care to achieve long-term sustained well-being,” she explains.

Areas that will be addressed include: homeless service & affordable housing; employment services; emergency shelter; aging service; veterans services; Medicaid; food stamps; child support; transportation; and linkages to The Family Justice Center/Domestic Violence Needs, educational services, literacy/ESL classes, health screenings, HIV/AIDS services, legal services, faith based supports and numerous other critical resources identified on an individualized basis.

Cost of the new vehicle is about $100K. The Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders has approved funding to support the Navigating Hope Initiative within the 2018 Operating Budget.

The Hope One vehicle is funded and maintained by the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, she adds.

“While these are two separately funded vehicles, they represent the strong partnership between the county Department of Human Services and the sheriff’s office in reaching our most vulnerable residents by breaking down barriers and bringing hope into each municipality,” she says.

Professionals will be on site in each vehicle and visit.

In addition, “Development of a volunteer component will

be a goal during the first year of operation,” she adds.

Navigating Hope is targeted “to serve thousands of residents per year. The expanded array of services offered will ultimately draw additional people and reach the most vulnerable, hard to serve residents.”

“These are not new services, rather a new way of delivering them,” says Carpinteri. “We expect to reach people who are hesitant to reach out to the county for help.”

The county is hoping to launch Navigating Hope this fall. It will travel in tandem as well as separately from Hope One, with plans to visit all 39 municipalities, says Carpinteri.

“The autonomy of Navigating Hope allows us to utilize it as a mobile outstation model for residents seeking short term and long term benefits, reaching all municipalities in the county when not supporting the work of Hope One,” she explains. “Two vehicles provides more capacity to bring an array of services into the community and reach more people.

In its first year of service, Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon’s Hope One program travels twice a week to locations throughout Morris County, bringing services to persons in need. A sheriff’s officer, licensed clinician, and a certified peer recovery specialist staff the vehicle with a goal to prevent drug overdoses and deaths by reaching out to those in need.

Since its inception, Hope One had nearly 3,000 residents in need visit the mobile unit and nearly 850 county residents received life-saving Narcan training to be employed in emergencies. Stops have included supermarket shopping centers, libraries, churches and malls.

Hope One is able to provide clients immediate access to services and treatment facilities, putting them on the road to recovery and wellness; Narcan training and kits are provided to family members and friends of individuals with opiate addiction.
