Bands Battle To Raise Money For CUMAC, Charity 5K Up Next

By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta ore than 200 people came to The Ukrainian American Cultural Art Center of NJ in Whippany, for the “Light the Night” Battle of the Bands to raise money for CUMAC on Saturday, Sep. 30.

The event was collaborated by Jennifer Miller; Jayne DiGregorio of Poppy Dreamz Events; and David Philp, drummer, and founder of the YouChoose Band, as well as the evening’s host.

Since 2011, Philp helped raise more than $70,000 for CUMAC. “He and his bands are always volunteering their time,” said Adrian Diaz, community engagement coordinator for CUMAC. Saturday evening’s occasion raised close to $5,000. Happenings included: Tricky Tray, door prizes, a guitar auction, pumpkin painting for children, food, drinks – and of course live music.

The YouChoose Band and Double Jynx dueled it out performing hits from the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and ’00s.

Double Jynx was led by Grammy Award winning music producer Rob Fusari, and included Drew McKeon, drummer for Michael Bolton; bassist Stu Brooks, Matisyahu musical director for Dub Trio; and Dominic Gallucci, who toured with Wu-Tang Clan.

They wowed the audience with tunes by Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Tears for Fears, Oasis, and Jet; while The YouChoose Band got the crowd moving to songs from The Who, Pat Benatar and Adele. Then both bands joined together for

an incredible version of Queen’s “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions,” which earned them all a standing ovation.

The competition went on for almost two hours while audience members picked their favorite by placing donations in baskets labeled with the name of each band.

“It was a great night,” said Diaz. “Two great bands battled for the crown. Dave Philp is always looking for new ways to add excitement for CUMAC events. We’ve had Motown nights, eighties nights. He and his bands are always volunteering their time. He pitched this idea and said, ‘Let’s run with it.’”

On Sunday, Oct. 29, CUMAC is having a Charity 5K to scare hunger away at the Garret Mountain Reservation in Paterson.

“It’s our third year doing it,” said Diaz. “We have food, music; it’s really a great day. We’re looking for runners and walkers this year.”

And for the holidays, CUMAC welcomes people to go to its website (https://www. cumac.org/) and make a donation.

“We’re able to buy food in bulk so every dollar goes to the cause,” said Diaz. “We also have a driver that can pick up donations. Our drivers can pick up clothing, diaper wipes, personal hygiene products. Supporters can call us and we can schedule a pick up or they can drop off in our building.”

CUMAC is a non-profit organization dedicated to feeding people and changing lives for more than 30 years. It began in the late 1970s,

As they met that need, a greater need in the city of Paterson become obvious, and a small pantry was born to provide emergency food to the local community.

Morris Libraries Expand Its Digital Library Program

By Jason Cohen n order to keep up with the ever evolving technological times, libraries have had to adapt. Now, residents and teachers in Morris County can access books on their personal devices, without leaving home.

Now that the school year has started, MAIN (The Morris Automated Information Network) consortium libraries are making things more appealing for youngsters and even adults who are tech savvy. MAIN consortium library card holders now have the opportunity to use the TumbleBooks Library to access digital children’s story books, read along eBooks, videos, games and more. In order to help grant access to services like Tumblebooks.

MAIN Executive Director Phillip Berg feels this will not only help library membership, but enhance education.

“The MAIN member libraries felt it important to help support the efforts of teachers and school libraries by not just offering a limited courtesy library card to teachers, but a full access one,” Berg said.“ Educating our young people is an important endeavor which

(public libraries) can and should help as members of the greater local community.”

Additionally, K‐12 teachers can register for a full service library card in the town in which they teach if they do not already reside in the MAIN public libraries service area.

TumbleBookLibrary is a curated database of children’s e-books, available by subscription to Elementary Schools and Public Libraries around the world.

Library users may access TumbleBooks by visiting a participating library’s website or installing the app on their smartphone. Users will be asked for their library card number to verify their access. Visit your library’s website for a link or go to: http://bit.ly/maintumblebooks.

Emily Weisenstein, head of youth services at Madison Public Library, who co‐chairs the MAIN Youth Services Committee, feels this new app is a step in the right direction.

“It is a fantastic resource for our patrons,” Weisenstein said.

“They offer a wide range of juvenile eBooks that children can access at anytime, anywhere

– all they need is an Internet connection and a library card. I especially like their selection of interactive picture books, which allows children to read along with some of their favorite titles. It’s fun, easy to use, and popular.”

MAIN libraries joined the rest of the country in celebrating September as National Library Card Signup Month.

MAIN was originally created in 1980 when several of Morris County’s libraries were automated with a shared computer system.

Today, it is now a consortium of 38

public libraries located in Morris, Somerset and Warren Counties. Its mission is to lead and encourage collaboration, resource sharing, staff development and innovation by providing high quality, cost effective shared services to member libraries for their communities.

MAIN libraries serve more than half a million residents of all ages.

Patrons of member libraries have access to more than 2.8 million items including eBooks, eAudiobooks, Blu-rays, DVDs, music, museum passes, videogames and books.

Fall In Love With The East Hanover News’ New Magazine-Style

Readers can expect the same great positive stories local to the area, but at the same time enjoy the smaller, compact paper easier to take along and even keep intact without pages falling out. The new format is really a blend between a newspaper and magazine.

“The only difference is the size and the cover,” says Joe Nicastro, co-publisher of New View Media Group LLC along with Mary Lalama. “We still will have news and local articles. In fact the actual size of the image area is exactly the same in length at 10” just the width is 7.5” instead of 10.”

New View Media Group currently publishes 14 monthly newspapers and four bi-monthlies, covering stories in 42 municipalities, mailed for free to more than 190K homes and businesses.

The Flanders couple began their newspaper company MJ (My Jersey) Media back in 2004, starting with the Mt. Olive Weekly.

That grew to eight papers, to 15 in 2015 when they added seven new publications in the Eastern part of N.J. and changed their name to New View Media with an idea to “have a new view on media,” says Nicastro.

Since then, they added on four more bi-monthlies in the northeastern region of N.J. stretching into Passaic County with the publication of the Hometown News.

“I am always looking for ways to improve the product,” says Nicastro regarding the recent style change of his papers. “After discussion with many readers over a period of time the same suggestion was being said. They wanted a magazine type publication that would not have pages fall out when moved and something smaller that is easier to handle.

This was a tough decision as the printing costs are about 15 percent higher than the large size. But I wanted to make sure the readers get what they want to keep the papers longer which will help advertisers.”

While photos have always been included, the publications attract readers with a larger colorful photo on the front cover.

“It allows us to feature a large local photo on the front cover and as well as offer our advertisers some other advertising options,” says Nicastro, adding that he is pleased with all the positive feedback he has received so far.

“I have to say in my 30 years of publishing I have received more positive responses to the magazine format than anything else I have done,” he says. “I even received calls from many small businesses looking to advertise.”

While style has changed, content will still focus on all positive news local to the community- from schools to government, people, organizations, places of worship, libraries, non-profit groups, volunteer services, children’s programs, scouts and fundraisers.

Each issue hopes to draw in more input from readers and timely topics.

For example, “For our Valentines issue I would like to have readers submit letters on how they met their loved ones,” he says.

For Memorial Day, readers will be encouraged to send in photos of loved ones lost in the service; and for Veterans Day, readers can submit photos of their family members who served.

41st Annual Morristown Craftmarket Sunday Oct. 20-22

he Morristown CraftMarket, now celebrating its 41st consecutive year as a nationally acclaimed and charitable fine art and craft show featuring 150 gifted artists from more than 25 states throughout the country, will be held Friday, Oct. 20 through Sunday, Oct. 22 at the Morristown Armory.

Premature Birth is a National Health Crisis A Silent Auction will be run throughout the show in loving memory of Robert James “RJ” Nelson, III, a brave baby boy who was born 13 1/2 weeks premature and fought hard for the right to live for 82 days (April 6 - June 27, 2016).

The Silent Auction will put the spotlight on premature birth which the March of Dimes calls “the leading cause of death of babies in the U.S.” (Premature Birth Report Card, www.multivu.com) Proceeds from the Silent Auction will benefit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Morristown Medical Center (“Sam’s NICU”), which helps premature babies and their families. The Silent Auction will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. at the show. Winners need not be present.

he community is encouraged to bring unwanted computers, telephones and other electronic devices to the Essex County Computer and Electronics Recycling Day Oct. 21 at the Old Essex County Hospital Center.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and is sponsored by the County of Essex and the Essex County Utilities Authority.

“Recycling computer hardware and electronic devices helps remove lead and other dangerous chemicals from our waste stream, which is important for us and our children,” said Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo. “With your participation, we can do our part to protect the environment.

Our collection days are very popular and I am glad our residents understand the importance of recycling.”

Items being accepted include computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, scanners, telecom

equipment, speakers, televisions, keyboards, main frames, VCRs, stereos, DVD players, toasters, irons and cellular telephones. Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms will not be accepted.

Under DiVincenzo’s leadership, the county’s collection program has been expanded to include household hazardous waste, old computers and electronic equipment, used tires and paper shredding. Livingston’s Solomon Spends Days And Nights Helping Cancer Cause

W

hen someone’s professional aspirations and personal passion intersect, it can be quite powerful. For Andrea Solomon of Livingston, personal loss ignited a sincere, deep desire to help those who are battling cancer.

She is an oncology sales executive for Astellas Pharmaceuticals, and a wife, mother and daughter who was the caregiver for her own mother, who battled lung cancer for 8 1/2 years. Solomon has also been the co-chair of the American Cancer Society’s Diamond Ball for the past 12 years, raising awareness and significant funds to help find cures, support survivors and offer patients access to care.

Solomon was first introduced to the American Cancer Society when her father was diagnosed with lung cancer more than 16 years ago. Already in pharmaceu-

tical sales, she soon found herself working on a cancer drug, which deepened her relationship with the American Cancer Society. She eventually became the co-chair of the Diamond Ball.

Her mother’s devastating diagnosis with lung cancer came a few years later, and Solomon again saw firsthand the great work of the American Cancer Society, which offered her mother rides to treatments and hours of advice and counseling on its 24-hour toll-free number.

This year’s Diamond Ball, which will be held at the Westmount Country Club in Woodland Park on Nov. 19, will be the first she will host without her mother in attendance, as she passed away in May, 15 years after Solomon lost her father. This has made her even more determined to realize the event’s ultimate mission – a world without cancer.

Since its inception 37 years ago, the Diamond Ball has raised more than $4 million in the fight against cancer, and under Solomon’s direction, it has steadily grown in attendance and funds raised.

“Every dollar raised at the Diamond Ball allows the American Cancer Society to help people facing a cancer diagnosis today,” Solomon explained. “It helps to educate about how to reduce their risk for cancer or detect it early when it’s the easier to treat, as well as fund cancer research that will help protect future generations.”

Now in its 38th year, the Diamond Ball, with its theme “Hope Grows Here,” is an inspiring and fun-filled evening, which includes entertainment, dancing, auctions and gourmet cuisine, also honors those who have gone above and beyond to help cancer patients and their families

Solomon’s work has also inspired other Livingston residents to join the mission. In addition to having Livingston neighbor Farah Goldstein as co-chair for the Diamond Ball, Debbie Tunis, who also resides in Livingston, and has been battling breast cancer for three years, cites her volunteer work for the Diamond Ball as the reason she is able to get out of

bed each day. After hearing about the Diamond Ball from a cousin, Tunis reached out to Solomon to offer her assistance and has been working tirelessly to solicit auction items and secure sponsorships and donations while continuing her treatment.

“Going through treatment can be all consuming, I needed something positive to focus on,” Tunis said.

“After everything that the American Cancer Society has

done for me during my battle, such as supplying rides to appointments, a wig when I lost my hair and countless hours of hand-holding, I wanted to give back, and working on the Diamond Ball has allowed me to do that.”

hen he w a l ke d d o w n Roseland Avenue in Caldwell, Orges Rrapay was always curious about the inner workings of the Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department. The Caldwell University student got a chance to learn about the operation Sept. 29 when he and other students and faculty volunteered at the firehouse for Caldwell Day, the university’s annual day of community service.

They cleaned the fire trucks and were given a tour. For Rrapay, who is from Albania, it was gratifying to see the dedication of the fire department. He felt a sense of community that said, “We are here in good days and bad days, even when a fire occurs.”

The firehouse was just one of several community groups and nonprofits where 243 Caldwell students, faculty and staff used their hands and hearts to put into action the university’s Catholic Dominican pillar of service.

Dr. Marjorie Squires and some students volunteered at the ARC of Essex County Stepping Stones School in Roseland, which provides services for children with Down syndrome from ages 3 to 10. Squires was impressed by the dedication of the teachers and by the children’s joy.

“I’m uplifted,’’ she said. “My soul is happy and light.”

Oluwatosin Adebiyi, a nursing student, said she saw how “unique and special” each child was. Judy Bellina, a Caldwell University alumna and coordinator of volunteers, community and parent outreach at Stepping Stones, was glad to welcome volunteers from her alma mater and to let others in the community see what the school provides.

Winners were awarded in Adult and Youth categories and were recognized on Saturday, Sept. 23 during the Annual Fall Family Festival at the Essex County Environmental Center in Roseland.

“We congratulate the winners of the Essex County Parks Photography Contest and thank all the contestants for sharing what they experienced in our historic Parks System,” said Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. “Events like these encourage our residents to visit our open spaces and share their artistic talents.

All these photographs capture the beauty, highlight the diversity and natural splendor of our parks, reservations and recreation facilities.”

In the United States, donors can register with a state donor registry or designate their decisions on their driver’s licenses.
