Florham Park Public Schools First in Morris County to Launch Nextmark Mental Health Training for Teachers in the Classroom

he Florham Park Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Steven Caponegro, announced the launch of NextMark Teacher Training on Student Mental Health in the classroom for Florham Park educators to begin this month, becoming the first school district in Morris County to commit to this teacher training program.

The NextMark Teacher Training Program educates staff on how to recognize student mental health issues in the classroom and provides real life practical strategies to manage and shape student behaviors.

The Story of Carmela Scarnato

A woman of many names turns 100 in March, an achievement and milestone that causes most of us to pause and exclaim “wow!” For a company, 100 years is extraordinary. For a person, it’s legendary. But this particular woman is beyond legend. While she’s not an orator, political figure or anyone you would know, her story should be known and celebrated, and that’s not just because she’s my grandma.

It’s hard to imagine that someone could live most of her life and not know her real name, but this is the case with my grandmother. Growing up, Grandma was known as Millie. She was one of five children born to Giovanni and Giovanina Alati who immigrated to the United States from Calabria, Italy. Of three boys and three girls, Millie was the second oldest sister. She was known for her smile and laughter. Home was Essex County, New Jersey, specifically Newark and Irvington. For the better part of her life she never lived more than a few miles away from her siblings.

As she got older, Millie’s name became formalized to Mildred. This was the name on all mail she received, but when she reached social security age, she began to receive mail addressed to “Carmela.” After some research, she discovered that “Carmela” was the actual name on her birth certificate. For the better part of her life she had thought her name was Mildred, but apparently “Millie” was merely a shortened and Italian/English version of Carmela.

Her name, whether it be Millie or Carmela, isn’t the most interesting or unique part of her story. It’s the last 60 plus years that are truly unique. In her 20s, Carmela (Millie at the time) met a man and fell in love. They had two daughters, Jennifer and Linda, whom they raised in their multi-family home in Irvington, NJ. When Carmela was 42, she discovered that she was pregnant again. Even at that time being pregnant in one’s 40s was considered high risk, but she didn’t think anything of it.

On Sunday, September 2, 1962 she gave birth to her one and only son, Leonard, named after his father.

Leonard was born with Down Syndrome and severe mental handicaps. The family believe that these conditions resulted because of doctor negligence. Grandma didn’t know she was pregnant but knew she was having some health troubles. She went to see the

doctor who told her her symptoms were due to menopause and gave her an x-ray and hemorrhoid surgery without ever checking to see if she was pregnant. Many of us would blame others in this type of situation, but that’s not who Carmela is.

Shocked at first by their newfound situation, Carmela and her family learned how to care for Leonard. With three children to care for, including a two-year-old son with a disability, Carmela’s life was challenging enough, but her situation became even more comcontinued on page 9

n the seven presidential elections since 1992, the Republican presidential nominee has won the popular vote exactly once. The lone GOP candidate to receive a majority of the national vote was George W. Bush in 2004. Bush’s election-day victory over Democrat John Kerry, who had, in most observers’ views, “won” the debates between the two, was explained by the respected Democratic pollster Peter Hart: “Voters preferred I Like over IQ.” One test of deciding between presidential nominees is, “Who would you rather have a beer with?” which is another way of asking which White House challenger the voter personally likes more than the other. In short, our ballot for president is the most “personal” vote we Americans cast. Almost always, we pick the candidate with whom we are more comfortable and, more significantly, the candidate whose judgment and character we think we could depend upon in a personal crisis.

As evidence of the weight of the “I like” factor in presidential voting, let’s look at recent contests: In 2012, Barack Obama, the winner, was rated 52% personally favorable by voters, while Mitt Romney’s scores were 47% favorable and 50% unfavorable. In 2008, Americans had a rare positive choice. In the last Gallup poll before election day, John McCain was given a favorable rating by 57% of Americans and was barely eclipsed by Barack Obama’s 61% favorable score. In 2004, winner George W. Bush was 53% favorable among voters on election day, while John Kerry’s numbers were at 47%-51%. In 1992 and 1996, voters liked Democrat Bill Clinton more than they liked both then-President George H. W. Bush and Sen. Bob Dole. Of course, the outlier election was 2016, when both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump received historically low favorability scores. About

Mark Shields 1 in 5 voters rated both candidates unfavorably but, when forced to choose between the two, voted for Trump with 3-2 odds.

But what about the 2020 Outsider who’s on our living rooms TVs at every timeout of every game, at every commercial break between weather reports, news coverage and even during the Super Bowl? Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, an authentic billionaire, is spending at a rate unprecedented in American politics. And it is paying off.

In most recent national polls, Bloomberg -- on the strength of his wall-to-wall media campaign -- has risen to double digits and as high as third place in some surveys.

We know that Michael Bloomberg has supported and spent generously to back candidates and initiatives that reflect his own priorities of gun control and climate change. In the eyes of some Democrats, Bloomberg’s political history -- his quarter-million-dollar gift to South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham; the more than $11 million the mayor donated in 2016 to Pennsylvania continued on page 6

Tyranny of the Tamiflunatics

eware of clickbait character assassins masquerading as “journalists.”

This is a lesson America should have learned after the mass media defamation of the Covington Catholic schoolboys last year. Just a few weeks ago, innocent teenager Nick Sandmann won a multimillion-dollar settlement against CNN for leaping to conclusions and attempting to ruin his life in pursuit of a political agenda driven by confirmation bias. The Washington Post and NBC News face similar lawsuits for potential damages totaling more than a half-billion dollars.

False allegations have consequences.

And yet, here we are again.

In Colorado last week, a young family was hurled into a national firestorm created by a single, powerful NBC News vigilante with an ideological ax to grind.

“Investigative reporter” Brandy Zadrozny lit the fuse on Feb. 6 with a Twitter post announcing that a 4-year-old had died of the flu. According to the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 10,000 Americans (including nearly 70 children) have died of the flu this season. So what made this Colorado toddler’s tragic death newsworthy?

The NBC News journalist condemned the boy’s mom for having reached out to a Facebook health-centered parents’ group whose members recommended that she not give her child Tamiflu medicine that a pediatrician had prescribed.

Some commenters on the group had advised home remedies, including essential oils and vitamin C. Zadrozny linked to her incendiary hit piece on the mom and the “Stop Mandatory Vaccination” Facebook group, which was titled: “On Facebook, anti-vaxxers urged a mom not to give her son Tamiflu. He later died.”

The toxic inference is clear: “An-

Michelle Malkin ti-vaxxers” are guilty of spreading online “misinformation” that led the mom to withhold a purportedly life-saving modern medicine -- and Facebook is guilty for not stopping it.

Zadrozny is a self-anointed and self-appointed social media policewoman whose main focus is pressuring Facebook to shut down discussion groups she doesn’t like. She labels all vaccine skeptics as conspiracy theorists without refuting facts or responding to peer-reviewed journal citations and historical data. She uses her bully pulpit to harangue Facebook into censoring laypeople seeking alternatives to “mainstream” medicine.

Zadrozny quoted “experts” fretting about parents who discuss their objections to coercive mandates and missives of Big Pharma and Big Government. Her article sneered at “natural remedies.”

The magic words “anti-vaxx” triggered the Two Minutes Hate theater that sent “Tamiflu” trending on Twitter.

The nicer messages called for the boy’s grieving mom to be arrested and imprisoned. Many advocated that she continued on page 6

User Hayden chimed in: “She clearly should be executed, as should the person who posted the nonsense on FB, as well as anyone who liked said nonsense, ALL EXECUTED!!”

Zadrozny’s inciting tweet now has nearly 40,000 retweets, 5,000 comments and 72,000 likes.

Lost in all of these crazed point-andsputter diatribes were some pertinent, pesky facts.

“Investigative reporter” Zadrozny never actually interviewed the parents, Geneva Montoya and Najee Jackson Sr., and relied solely on the Facebook postings and information from their GoFundMe page without independently discovering whether they

But we do not know who Mike Bloomberg really is. Does he have a temper or a sense of humor? Can he laugh at himself? Would we want him as a neighbor? Can he personally ask the machinist in Dayton and her husband for their votes? Or is he a billionaire who, like so many people with money, is most comfortable surrounded by high-priced, professional bootlickers

who tell him how much smarter, more successful and more qualified he is to be president than anyone else?

Through his sophisticated and expensive TV and internet campaigns, we are learning what Mike Bloomberg wants us to know about him. What voters have yet to find out -- and will not know until he’s in the arena, mixing it up with the other Democrats and on the debate stage -- is whether we will like Mike.

had changed course after Montoya had commented to the Facebook group. Nor did she independently verify whether the parents were “anti-vaxx” or what vaccines besides the controversial flu vaccine (whose effectiveness has been challenged worldwide by health officials) they had chosen to avoid. A local television station, however, did the reporting Zadrozny failed to do.

It turns out the entire family, except for 4-year-old Najee Jr., had been suffering from influenza B. A 10-month-old brother who had been running a high fever had been seen at my neighborhood Children’s Hospital in Colorado Springs the afternoon before Najee Jr. fell ill. Montoya told Fox31 TV in Colorado Springs: “We called the doctors. We called the hospital. We gave them the medicine we were instructed to give.

We did everything.”

Those who have already prejudged the mom respond that she must be lying. What if she is telling the truth? And why hadn’t Zadrozny updated her story as of Feb. 11? I asked the online social media monitor that question publicly on Twitter, but she failed to respond by my deadline.

More to the point, it’s quackery to suggest that Tamiflu would have saved Najee Jr.’s life. The respected Cochrane researchers in Britain have concluded there is no

evidence the medicine reduces mortality or hospitalizations. In 2006, the FDA updated the Tamiflu label indicating that it could cause psychiatric problems. Japan banned Tamiflu for teenagers amid concerns about deleterious side effects.

Just days before Zadrozny crucified Najee Jr’s family, a Denver mom publicly warned that her 8-year-old daughter suffered hallucinations from Tamiflu. Earlier this week, a 16-year-old girl in Leesburg, Va. with the flu died of cardiac arrest. She had been prescribed Tamiflu. Another 16-yearold in Ohio died of the flu last month after suffering a stroke. She, too, had been prescribed Tamiflu.

Their cases didn’t make NBC News headlines, because they don’t fit the dissent-squelching narrative. Tamiflunatics, vaccine bullies and their media gatekeepers spread misinformation that destroys lives.

They are the true public health threats.

That’s the feedback Project Help has gotten from art teachers across the state.

Many teachers and art students want to participate in the organization’s annual Art Poster Contest, but time got away from them over the holiday season.

We don’t want to leave anyone out, so the deadline for the contest has been pushed forward to March 20.

Here’s what you need to know...

In 2019 the veteran’s aid group successfully launched its mobile closet, a repurposed school bus that brings clothing and other necessities to retired military individuals and families statewide.

Based on that milestone event Project Help has chosen its theme for the Third Annual Poster Contest. Art students are being asked to focus their creativity on the Project Help bus and how it will benefit veterans in need of assistance.

All students - kindergarten through high school - are eligible to share their artistry and creativity. Art teachers already have the contest details in hand so all that is needed are some innovative ideas and the sky is the limit imagination!

Netflix Cheerleading Docuseries Features Morris County Cheerleader

By: Megan Roche etflix’s new docuseries, Cheer, has spread like wildfire. The show debuted in January 2020 and chronicles the world of cheerleading at Navarro College in Corsicana, TX. The tiny Texas college has big heart and big game when it comes to the world of competitive cheerleading. One of those Bulldog cheerleaders is Brooke Morosca, from Morris County.

Morosca, who hails from Rockaway, is a 2018 graduate of Morris Knolls High School in Denville. The Rockaway native found her love for the sport of cheerleading when she was just four years old. She has cheered for two different all-star gyms for over 16 years. After looking at colleges and meeting with Navarro’s head coach, Monica Aldama, Morosca officially joined the freshman class.

“I was a really shy kid and my parents were hoping that cheer would help me branch out. I loved performing in front of people when I got on the mat. I grew up as a flyer and I’m continuing to co-ed stunt in college. When I first started to look at colleges, I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go, but once I got into contact with Monica and I saw the program, I knew this was where I wanted to be.” Morosca said.

Cheer follows the Navarro College cheerleaders as they prepare for their one and only competition of the year, NCA Nationals in Daytona, Fl. every April. The competition is the only one out there for collegiate cheerleaders and winning is everything to head coach Monica and her bulldog cheer team. The team spends an entire year preparing a 2 minute routine that gets performed and judged only once.

The team has won the National Championship a total of 14 times and was named Grand National Champion five times.

and they were really good about keeping their distance during practice for safety reasons. It ended up being an overall cool experience.” Morosca said.

Throughout the series, viewers get a behind the scenes look at the tumbling, the pyramid, injuries, and the real world of what it takes to be a competitive cheerleader.

There are stories of anguish and triumph, overcoming the odds, and much more shown throughout. Since the series debuted, the stars of Navarro’s cheer team have been on talk shows and their social media follows have increased greatly. With the notoriety that they now have, one wonders, are they more nervous for Daytona this year?

“I would say we’re a little bit more nervous, just because our exposure has really tripled. We’ve always just known that we have a job to do at this competition, we just want to hit and win and that’s all we’re focusing on.” Morosca said.

The behind the scenes look gives viewers the inside access to the hours of practice, where skills are put to the test over and over again, no matter what. The emphasis that anything can happen is extremely present when injuries happen and even if an athlete isn’t on the mat officially, they can very quickly be called in to replace someone who is hurt or who isn’t giving their 100%. According to Morosca, practice is each afternoon from 12:40 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and some nights, there is a two-hour practice on top of that. She also has a heavy course load of classes.

While the docuseries has blown up, the girls and guys who make up Navarro’s squad have been traveling, doing press interviews, even appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Through all of the attention, Morosca has remained humble and grateful.

“Cheerleading has taught me how not to give up and to always push myself to be the best, whether that is by being an athlete or being a student. I also remain humble and grateful and understand my blessings and being grateful for all life has to give. I have always believed in myself and believed in my dreams and cheerleading has brought me that.” Morosca said.

As Navarro is a two year college, Morosca is currently looking at her options of transferring to a four year school after her two years at Navarro are up. The pre-veterinary science major hopes to keep cheerleading in her life by continuing coaching the sport, even after she graduates with her veterinarian degree. For now, Morosca and her teammates are fully focused and locked in on preparing for NCA’s next month.

While there has been no official word from Netflix if Cheer will get a season two, many from around the world are begging them to bring more Cheer to television screens, going as far as starting an online petition. Carmela’s husband wanted a divorce, but being a devout Catholic, she refused to sign the divorce papers. She wouldn’t change her name either and to this day she still uses her married name, Scarnato.

There was still more difficulty ahead for Carmela. Leonard proved not only to have Down syndrome, but also to have Autism. As a child he was able to communicate some and respond, but after an eye surgery at three years old, Leonard lost the ability to speak and would only communicate with groaning or grunting sounds. He needed help in every aspect of life—bathing, feeding, getting dressed. And since he couldn’t communicate, there was no way to know if he was sick or hurt.

Carmela worked for decades in the Irvington public school cafeteria. She received what some might refer to as “child support” from her ex-husband. In the 60s, the money he sent, $55 a week, might have been a reasonable amount. But that amount never increased. Even at the turn of the century, she received only $55 a week from him. Carmela never asked for more.

Family remained an important aspect of their lives as the brothers and sisters Carmela lived close to became the parents of the cousins her children grew up with. Her daughters graduated from high school and college and both

married. And since her daughters moved out of the house, Leonard was now her only companion. Now 53 years old, Carmela had to find an adult day care center where Len could go while she was at work, and her primary concern in life became making sure she was home when the bus would drop Leonard off from “the center.”

Carmela never learned to drive so she walked everywhere she could or relied on a daughter or girlfriend to give her a ride when she needed it. Weekly trips to go “food shopping,” clipping coupons and an occasional visit from her grandson were the highlights of her life. She continued continued on page 10

Carmela Scarnato... cont. from page 9 to work well into her 60s, but her real job was taking care of Leonard.

As she approaches a century on God’s earth, Carmela Scarnato is still taking care of Leonard who is now 57. Leonard has lived longer than doctors said he would, and at 100 years, Carmela is older than she ever thought she would be. Len and Grandma have kept each other young.

My grandma is going to be 100, yet she still lives on her own. She resides on the second floor of a condo development in East Hanover, NJ where THERE IS NO ELEVATOR. She walks up a flight of 20 stairs better than most. At 99 years old, she finally accepted help in the form of aid workers coming to help with Leonard, but Carmela still oversees the daily aspects of his life. She’s still concerned that Leonard isn’t “bundled up” enough when it’s cold out and that he takes his shoes off when he comes in the door.

In the past few years, Leonard has had numerous health issues from hernias to skin conditions that have taken a toll on them both - but she still soldiers on. Her daughters and son-in-laws live nearby and take her and Leonard on their weekly doctors’ visits and “food shopping” runs. Her only grandson and his wife have four boys of their own and she loves to spoil her great-grandchildren with “treats.”

Carmela is the last of her siblings. She’s watched each of them pass away.

Reflecting on Carmela’s life as we approach her 100th birthday there are a few things that stand out. Her homemade ravioli. The infamous chocolate cake that was at every birthday party. Her homemade coconut Easter eggs.

The fact that her home’s temperature is always set to 80 degrees no matter the season. The fact that she can’t ever throw anything away and that she refers to Jeopardy and

Wheel of Fortune as her shows. And that she’s one of the easiest people to tease because she loves to laugh.

Everyone loves an underdog story. The overcomer is the character that is timeless and impossible not to love. While there are many who will achieve greater glory in the eyes of the world, Carmela Scarnato is the quiet, humble and most loving person I’ve known. She has sacrificed so much, but wants nothing in return, because for her, it wasn’t a sacrifice.

She has taken care of her son for half a century when other options were made available to her. She could have put him in a “home” where he could have received 24/7 care, but she wouldn’t have any of it. It doesn’t matter that she couldn’t travel like her friends and siblings, or that her entire life had to revolve around taking care of an adult child who in any “normal” circumstance would be able to do these things for himself. There was never any self pity.

There was only unwavering love.

Here is a woman who is an example to any parent. In today’s “me” culture of self- fulfillment, I present a mother who cared not for herself, but only for others. Sacrifice was not a sacrifice. It was the greatest expression of love.

When my wife and I were expecting our first child we decided we would give the baby the middle name, Carmela, if it was a girl. We not only liked the name, but we also wanted to carry on the legacy of one of the most loving women this world has ever known. We ended up having a son. Then another. Then another. Then one more. While we were never able to officially pay tribute and homage through the naming of a child, this is one small way to memorialize her story to our four boys and others.

100 years. Here’s to you Great-Grandma, Grandma, Mom, Carmela.

Cedar Knolls Fire Department Members Celebrate 50 Years of Service

homas Harrington and Gary Keyser were recently honored by the Cedar Knolls Fire Department for completing 50 years of active service.

They both have a lot to be proud of during the last half century.

Tom Harrington joined the fire department as a junior member on May 5th, 1969 after serving in the military during the Vietnam conflict. He became a regular member on March 11, 1970.

As part of his service, he served as Fire Chief from 1981-1983, leading the department in some ma-

jor fires. He served as Fire Commissioner in District 3 for many years, implementing new policies and helping guide the department in the ever-changing world of the fire service. With his background in trucking, he served on many fire apparatus purchasing committees, traveling out to various fire equipment manufacturers to keep up to date on the latest trends of the equipment. He also serves as a Fire Police Officer, volunteers to drive the MAB (Morris County Office of Emergency Management’s Mobile Ambulance Bus) and has been recognized

on multiple occasions for awards and commendations to numerous to mention. In 1978 he became a NJ Exempt Fireman.

Gary Keyser joined the CKFD on October 13th, 1969, following in the footsteps of his father Bill. In 1972 he became a regular member. He was very instrumental in bringing the first aid squad forward, having served as a 2nd Lt. and then as Captain. He became an Emergency Medical Technician in June 1969. And since the NJ EMT program, as we know it, just began in 1967, he was at the forefront of EMS almost

He also served many years on the Board of Fire Commissioners and was Chairman. Also, like Tom, they worked closely to further the development of the department. He is also quite a historian with a plethora of information about the department, the law, and the fire service.

He also became exempt in 1979.

Both Harrington and Keyser are still active members responding to various fire and EMS emergencies and community events.

Morris County Clerk Names Winners of High School Cover Art Contest

orris County Clerk Ann Grossi has announced that Andrea Zeien of Hanover Park Regional High School, Abby Zaplishny of Roxbury High School, and Nathaniel Gallagher of Morris Hills High School are the top three prize winners respectively in the County Clerk’s art contest for the cover of the 2020 edition of the Morris County Manual — the go-to booklet for county and municipal government information.

This year’s 2020 version of the Morris County Manual honors the 100th anniversary of passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. It represents the 114th year the manual has been published by the Office of the Morris County Clerk.

While its design and content has changed throughout the decades, one thing has remained constant; the manual’s objective is to provide centralized resources for officials and residents concerning their government.

County Clerk Grossi hosted a ceremony this week for the winning entrees, among some 200 cover creations that poured into her Morristown Office from students at 16

high schools across the county. Covers — many filled with patriotic and county historic themes — filled the walls of a county office, where the event occurred.

Winning Entries were First Prize: Hanover Park Regional High School student Andrea Zeien, who lives in Florham Park, won the $500 first prize for a patriotic cover that featured a recently revamped version of the county seal overlaid on a colorful and historic version of the county map.

Second Prize: Roxbury High School student Abby Zaplishny, who resides in Mount Arlington, won the $300 second prize for a hand-drawn cover that features the county crest. Third Prize: Morris Hills High School student Nathaniel Gallagher won the third place prize of $100 for his use of the county seal featured on a modern cover.

Students in all Morris County high schools are invited to participate in the contest. Last year’s three art winners for the 2019 County Manual attended Morris Knolls and Morris Hills high schools.

Established 279 years ago to record every conveyance of property within the county, the County Clerk’s Office has progressed to provide an array of additional services, including election responsibil-

mation of county freeholders, county government officials, congressional and legislative representatives, members of county authorities, boards and commissions, plus personnel in all 39 municipalities.

The 2020 version of the County Manual will be printed and put online in the next several weeks.

Head Coach Arlan Freeman to Lead Inaugural College of St. Elizabeth Men’s Baseball Team

By Jerry Del Priore hen the College of St. Elizabeth (CSE) in Morristown went coeducational in 2016, that opened the door to expand its Division-III athletics program.

School administrators decided that they wanted to add a baseball program and hired Arlan Freeman in September of 2018 to guide the team.

Since then, Freeman has been feverishly working to put together a competitive club and believes the Eagles will work hard every day to get better. He said that CSE baseball currently has 46 student-athletes, which will be split into junior varsity (16) and varsity (30) squads.

The varsity team will

play in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) for the 2019-20 season, facing league opponents such as Pennsylvania programs Wilson College, Bryn Athyn College, Keystone College, Rosemont College, Clarks Summit University, and Cairn University, as well as New Jersey’s Centenary University.

Freeman said that the JV squad will play nine games - two at the end of March and seven on Sundays throughout the season, and members of the team can be mixed and matched with varsity when needed.

CSE Director of Athletics, Juliene Brazinski Simpson, is thrilled about the addition of the men’s baseball program.

"We are excited and look forward to the contin-

ued growth in our athletic department,” Simpson said on CSE’s website. “This is a great time to add a baseball team as we continue to grow as a college."

A native of Maine, Freeman is hopeful that CSE’s baseball program will continually develop on a daily basis as he applies his 10-plus years of coaching and interpersonal teaching methodologies to his men.

“We have some pretty good athletes,” said Freeman, who was SUNY New Paltz’s interim head men's baseball coach for the past two seasons and led the program to its first conference playoff win in 17 years while the association named him SUNYAC Coach of the Year in 2018.

“We’re going to be fundamentally sound,” he con-

tinued. “I like to think we can get one percent better every day. I’ve been able to get the best out of the groups I’ve worked with.

It’s rewarding when you see things work out. I think we have a chance to build a sustainable (winning) culture.”

But Freeman noted that the Eagles’ record won’t be the only way to define his team’s success. He said that he’s looking to help further the development of his student-athletes as people while providing overall self-worth to their existence. Plus, teaching winning and losing through good sportsmanship.

“We’ll create some value in these kids’ lives,” he said. “We have a chance to have a special program, but it’s not (just) about

wins and losses. We might win 10 or 12 games. But we need to win these games the right way and build good character kids.”

Freeman -- who also works as an admissions recruiter at the college -- said that he's already received praise from the places

where his players practice, regarding the way they act while working out in public.

The 43-year-old Little Falls resident said that type of feedback makes him proud and gives overall hope to CSE baseball going forward. continued on page 14

Seeing that several of his student-athletes don’t garner a ton of attention from larger schools, which, Freeman said, isn't necessarily a bad thing, he believes his players, who often come from less-than-desirable situations, benefit from the small school atmosphere.

CSE’s student body is approximately 1,200 strong.

“We want to target student-athletes who want to be great people,” Freeman said. “We have less fortunate, less privileged kids.

These kids are coming here for an education and to play baseball. We understand what our niche is as a small college. They would get lost in a bigger school, but they get individualized attention here. They get a little more guidance and a little more push.”

Well House Ministries: New Space and Faith Come Together

By: Evan Wechman here is a new and growing church moving this month from East Hanover to the Hyatt Regency on Speedwell Avenue in Morristown.

Formerly called the “Living Praise Church,” pastor Jeremy Alleman will be changing the name of the congregation to “The Well House Ministries.” They will be having services both Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings, as well as a bible study class after the Wednesday service.

Alleman, who grew up in nearby Florham Park and attended Hanover Park High School was not always a man of faith. However, now at the age of 26, after his father, Ted, passed earlier in the year, he is leading the congregation of about fifty people.

Jeremy loves the new location and believes that the church’s “main reason to move to Morristown is that we feel led to come here we would love to stay in Morristown if that’s where God wants us to be.

I grew up in Morris County and really love the area.

This is home for me.”

Though he lived his whole life in a home of faith where his father was the head of the congregation for over forty years, it was not that fact alone which brought him to Christianity. Alleman say’s though his parents influenced him towards a life of faith, they “let him make his own decisions.”

This led to a somewhat unorthodox route to Christianity as he admits he sinned just like others. “For a while, I fell back from the lord,” he claims. He humbly confesses he looked for love and salvation in all the

wrong places. However, just about three years ago, he accepted Jesus Christ into his heart. The young pastor states he heard a “constant voice and felt a presence of God that was unlike anything that can be contained in words.”

This led him to study under his father and the other elders of the church for approximately three years until he was ordained this past July. As for his dad’s teachings, Alleman proudly believes “the most important thing I learned from my father is faith in God. He showed me the value of it and how it changed and blessed his life.”

“Jesus is salvation,” according to the leader of this promising church. It is because of his own salvation that he now wants to share more about Christianity with others. He sincerely wants people to know that despite their

own past transgressions, both his church and Jesus loves them.

Alleman and his congregants are seeking to make a significant impact in Morristown. They want to spread the love of God and let people know there is a plan for them through Jesus. Alleman concludes “all have sinned and I sinned but God loves them and is not mad.”

Alleman also wants people to know Christianity can be very personal for people and can change their lives now, as well as in the future. He indeed believes that it is more than a religion. He firmly maintains “religion lives off an experience from someone else.

What makes Christianity different from any other religion is that it introduces you to a person (Jesus) that you can experience now, and do not have to wait.”

Rabbi Mark Biller to Address: ‘Is There a Jewish Angle?’

Rabbi Mark Biller, spiritual leader of Temple Gates of Prayer synagogue in Queens, New York, will address this provocative question in a three-part series, titled "Is There a Jewish Angle?: Who needs God? What's kosher?

Can we find a Jewish language for our life?" The series, which is free of charge, will take place on Tuesday, March 17, at 1:15 p.m., and Tuesdays, March 24 and 31, at 1 p.m., at the Morris County Library, 30 E. Hanover Ave., in Whippany.

Four (Tempting) Behaviors to Avoid When Saving for Retirement and the Secret to Real Retirement Savings Success

Retirement savings mistake #1: procrastinating Even though you know you will get older and eventually retire, a little part of you still believes you might not. Nobel Prize-winning economist Richard Thaler, the founding father of behavioral economics, has spent much of his career exploring why so many Americans have difficulty saving for retirement. One thing he found is that people would rather enjoy what their money can do for them today rather than in the future. 1 Retirement savings mistake #2: being too loss averse We don’t like to lose money, so the notion of less money in our paycheck today to serve our needs in the future is a tough pill to swallow. The problem with loss aversion is that we keep delaying that uncomfort-

able feeling of a smaller paycheck. If you delay too much, you lose out on the compounding effect. For example, if you decide to save $5,000 a year beginning at the age of 35, by the time you’re 65—assuming a 4.5% rate of return—you’ll have 43% less savings than if you had started saving at age 25. That adds up to $240,000.1 Retirement savings mistake #3: not practicing discipline When deciding how to invest, too often investors try to time the market rather than follow a disciplined investment approach. Trying to get in the market “at the right time” sounds smart, but in reality, it often leads to inaction, because that right moment never seems to come. The idea of timing the market only reinforces the first two mistakes (procrastination and being too loss averse). Here’s an example of a disciplined savings strategy: You could start by putting $5,000 away, and then add 5% each year. It might sound boring, but in the end, it will add up to much more than a “timed” strategy that never quite launches.

Retirement savings mistake #4: tinkering with your portfolio too much You want to take a more active role in your investments? That’s good, except if you have a tendency to overmanage. This often happens with retirees, who find themselves with more free time than ever before, and take a keen interest in chasing performance. In the research paper, “Trading is hazardous to your wealth,” authors Brad Barber and Terrance Odean found that, on average, households turned over 75% of their equity portfolios annually and underperformed by 1.5% each year.2 The biggest cause of this is mistiming when to buy and sell a particular fund. For Some People, Every Day is a Day to Celebrate the Irish

By Elsie Walker any people will say that St. Patrick’s Day is the day when everyone is Irish. Green is seen all around and the focus is on all things Irish. For the Irish American Association of North West Jersey (IAANWJ), the focus every day is on all things Irish. Located in Rockaway on Richard Mine Road, the association’s mission is “to preserve the Irish culture and to create an awareness of the contributions the Irish have made, and continue to make, in building America,” said Jack Regan. A first generation American, Regan has been a member of the IAANWJ for over 20 years, a past president of it and currently is the Sergeant of Arms on its executive board. Recently, Regan, of West Milford, talked about the IAANWJ’s history, some of its events, and ways it preserves and passes on the Irish culture. Also, he shared that you don’t have to be Irish to join the association or to enjoy what it has to offer, which includes the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Morristown which is being held on March 14th.

“I love the club,” said Regan of the association.

The IAANWJ started in 1974 when a group of people of Irish heritage came together and realized how much they had in common and that they wanted to share and preserve their Irish heritage. They met elsewhere before buying a building for their clubhouse in 1977. Besides the events and classes it holds on site, the association is involved in two big events off-site, one right around the corner: the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Morristown.

Regan shared that in 1979, the club members decided to

have a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Wharton. They continued to have it, but as years went on, it became so popular that it had to move to a bigger venue. In 1990, the IAANWJ got together with the Friendly Sons, who became co-sponsors of the parade, and Morristown was selected as the venue.

This year’s parade will be held on March 14th. (Preceding the parade, there will be a mass at The Church of The Assumption in Morristown.) The parade will begin at noon, with its starting point being the town hall. Longtime IAANWJ member, Mary Waller, of Sparta, will be the Grand Marshall.

Another popular yearly event held by the association is a feis/festival the second Sunday in September. It starts with a mass. Then, there are competitions in Irish step dance and music. There are Irish language demonstrations and examples of Irish art. Entertainment is provided by an Irish Band.

The association also has other events, which are held at its clubhouse. Among them are a Celli (dance) the fourth Sunday of the month at 3pm. There is also a barbeque Celli held during the summer. A traditional Irish music session (with music played by all ages) is held monthly on Saturdays at 8 pm. The second Saturday in December is the annual Christmastime Holley. People come together and share their talents, cheer on each other and have a good time.

The clubhouse is also the site of a monthly Irish book club. Recent books include Bridget of Kildare and The Brencontinued on page 21

dancing is taught for children. and adults can learn Irish set and Celli dancing.

Celtic art workshops are led by the association’s resident artist, Patrick Gallagher. Students work on Celtic designs and use a variety of mediums, including clay and metal. There are music classes in Irish fiddle, the concertina, and the penny whistle (tin whistle).

I Remember Dad:

God and Country

By Richard Mabey Jr. ome of the most endearing memories of my Dad are of the times when he served as a Sexton at the Boonton United Methodist Church. Dad loved his church. He dedicated over a decade of his life to cleaning and maintaining his beloved church.

Dad began serving as the Church Sexton in the Summer of 1981. At the time, Dad was still working as a long distance truck driver. Generally speaking, on Wednesday evenings after supper, Dad would climb into his little Ford Ranger pickup truck and drive off to the church to clean it. I often went with Dad. I really don't know how my father did it all. When he started working as a Sexton he was 53 years old. I would often see the fatigue in Dad's eyes as he drove down Route 202, on his way to the church.

Dad would put in two to three hours of cleaning time on Wednesday nights. Then on Saturday mornings, he would get up early and eat breakfast. I often got up early on Saturday mornings, to help him clean the church. Right after breakfast we would make sandwiches. Then, throw in a couple

of apples with a few oatmeal cookies in little brown bags. We would make tea and coffee at the church, for our lunch break.

When we got to the church, Dad and I would start vacuuming and scrubbing. I was always amazed at how hard my Dad worked. Dad was an incredibly hard working man. He truly loved his church. Dad did get paid for being the Church Sexton. I don't think he reported to the Minister, even half of the hours he worked. It was Dad's way of giving of himself to the Lord.

Dad retired as a long distance truck driver in June of 1989. To my amazement, Dad then devoted even more time to the cleaning and the upkeep of his church. Thus, donating a lot more hours of labor to the church.

Dad served as Sexton of the Boonton United Methodist Church till the Summer of 1992. His bout with prostate cancer, made it nearly impossible for him to carry on his duties as Church Sexton.

In the Spring of 1987, Reverend Leon Weaver presented Dad with the well earned God and Country Award. This is an award given by both the United Methodist Church and the Boy Scouts of America. Dad

‘Watershed U’ Offered to High School Students June 22-26

H

igh school students considering majoring in environmental science, conservation or environmental education in college are invited to “Watershed University,” a new program offered this summer by Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA), the region’s watershed watchdog.

The one-week certificate program will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, at the Fairview Farm Wildlife Preserve, 2121 Larger Cross Road, Bedminster.

The program is designed for students entering grades 9-12 who want to gain insights in the environmental field, learn how to make impactful change and serve their communities. Each day includes a speaker, hands-on scientific exploration, and team building.

“Participants will learn from experts, examining environmental and social topics that affect local and global natural resource challenges,” said Lauren Theis, education director for Raritan Headwaters. “On-theground conservation projects will allow students to gain skills in scientific research, communication, and building connections

within a group.”

Watershed University topics include: • Watershed conservation • Creating habitat for native wildlife • Native plant identification • Pond and stream study • Climate issues • Environmental justice • GIS mapping • Environmental policies Students will have the option to participate in additional experiences, such as organic gardening, visual art projects, kayaking, hiking and yoga. Students will also connect with RHA staff and partners to explore opportunities for advanced learning, community service, citizen science projects and internships.

The cost of the program is $200, which includes certificate of participation and a Raritan Headwaters hat and t-shirt. Needbased scholarships are available.

Navigating Hope Completes 100th Stop Brings Mobile Social Services Across Morris County

orris County's Navigating Hope mobile social services team recently completed their 100th stop as part of unique program launched by the Board of Freeholders in 2019, and which has crisscrossed Morris County on wheels for the past eight months to help residents in need of assistance.

Many times working in tandem with Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon's Hope One mobile addictions services, Navigating Hope seeks out clients who cannot get to county social services offices in Morris Township and Dover due to transportation, family or physical issues, among others.

The mobile program visit supermarkets, libraries, churches, train stations, soup kitchens, shopping malls, and many other locations to reach county residents in need of assistance.

The Board of Freeholders were briefed on the team's first year on the road, which began with a June 6, 2019 stop at the Dover Free Produce Market at the Salvation Army and made its 100th stop outside of landlord-tenant court which is held in the Morris County Courthouse in Morristown.

"I am so proud of this team. Having been out in the field a number of time with them, watching them interact with our residents, it is heartwarming to see what they are doing,'' said Freeholder Kathy DeFillippo. "There are people who just can't get out in our county and don't have the wherewithal to navigate the social services process on their own.''

"Morris County is the accessible county,'' added Freeholder Director Deborah Smith. “If you can't get to us, we'll get to you. I think that's the whole point behind Navigating Hope.''

Navigating Hope team members, including coordinator Christopher Linne, Rewaida Muheisen of the county Office of Temporary Assistance, and Ashley Reed of Family Promise of Morris County, made a presentation to the freeholders at their county government work session in Morristown.

Linne explained that the mobile operation has visited 31 of the county's 39 municipalities, with Victory Gardens to be number 32 in March. Due to need, they have visited some locations multiple times, especially when they have found a community in need.

They have partnered with numerous organizations in the county, including the countywide library network, Legal Services of Northwest Jersey, Homeless Solutions, senior housing complexes, soup kitchens, and religious institutions, among others, to expand the reach of Navigating Hope.

In 2019, the Navigating Hope team completed nearly 300 applications or client evaluations for service and made more than 150 referrals to other social services organizations, in addition to providing information to hundreds more county residents.
