The Little Red Schoolhouse That Could, With More Restorations In The Works
By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta nyone who has been on Ridgedale Avenue in Florham Park has seen the Little Red Schoolhouse. One can’t miss the one-story red brick masonry building with the steep roof and bell on top. Built circa 1866, the building has become an iconic landmark to the borough of Morris County. In March 1867, the first group of students came onboard to learn at the oneroom schoolhouse. And just one teacher educated students in grades one through eight. This was the area’s only school until 1914 and is listed on the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places. The building is now a museum, operated by the Historic Society. It’s open to the public between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month. It’s also open to groups by appointment. Inside the museum, visitors can get a feel for what the school was like during earlier times when the area was mainly a farming village. The exhibit has many artifacts on display that were collected by the historical society such as agricultural tools and early kitchen utensils. Visitors can also see the broom-making machines that farmers used. And there’s a section of the museum set up as a classroom,
featuring an old blackboard, old desks and aged maps. Currently exhibited are “items from a lady’s boudoir,” such as lingerie and a corset and swimwear – both male and female- from the early 20th century. In addition to the opening as a museum, The Morris County Freeholders have honored the Borough of Florham Park with a Historic Preservation plaque, which was accepted by Mayor Mark Taylor at the freeholder’s June 8 meeting held at the Mennen Sports Arena in Morris Township. The restoration project was partly financed through the Morris County Historic Preservation Grant Program, providing $202,000 to Florham Park for the project. The borough successfully completed ADA compliance, cupola and bell restoration,
site work and a structural lintel. According to Taylor, the schoolhouse is recommended for an additional award for $120,000 to be put towards more work. If the grant is approved, the money would go for exterior restoration, including a new west entrance door. Taylor said, “We’re very conscious of its historic nature and take good care of it for future generations to enjoy.” The biggest plan for the schoolhouse, according to Taylor, is to rip off the roof and put a new one on. A historic engineer and contractor will be doing the work. The completion of the restoration of the wood shingle roof will be financed with help from a 2015 grant. Morris County Freeholder Deputy Director
Hank Lyon added that “fixing up the bell” was part of the restoration. “It’s a beautiful building,” he said. “It’s going to continue to act as a museum and continuing to restore and preserve. This is the main historic building. There are others, but this is the key one. You can’t drive around Florham Park without noticing.” Next year will mark the school’s 150th anniversary. Florham Park Police Department Trading Cards Are Back
By J. L. Shively he Florham Park Police officers are out in force and, for this month, they are looking forward to more than just their regular call of duty. Since mid-June Florham Park officers have been out meeting with the community and handing out their fourth series of trading cards. The police trading cards is a concept brought to the Florham Park Police Department by former Chief of Police Kim Chapman. “Chief Chapman was known for his strong belief in the concept of community policing,” says Sergeant Glen Johnstone of the Community Policing Bureau. This is the first time in three years that a new series of trading cards has been released, making this the fourth series since its genesis in 2007. The idea for the new release of these trading cards was “planned shortly after Chief Treiber took office in September 2015. He is also a proponent of the philosophy of community policing and was anxious to get a new series of cards out,” says Johnstone. The FFPD trading cards are a photo card just like any other trading card children will be familiar with today. These cards include the name of the officer as well as their photo and title within the department. According to a press release, since the last distribution of the trading cards, the department has “had several retirements, promotions and additions,” so the cards will reflect these changes and be an exciting new collection for young residents.
The new series of cards will also include all of the specialized units such as the “Honor Guard, Emergency Response Team, Motorcycle Unit, Bike Unit, Traffic Safety Unit and DARE Unit,” according to the press release. Most Florham Park students will already be familiar with the DARE and School Resource Officers such as Officer Charlie Greenstein and Johnstone himself, who are DARE Officers at the schools, but the trading card collecting is about becoming familiar with all police officials. “The contest is just a small part of the program,” says Johnstone. “We want the youth in town to get to know all of our officers, not just the DARE and School Resource Officers that are in their schools. The contest is to get them excited about getting and trading the cards. In the process of getting cards they get to meet our officers and realize they are real people like everyone else.” This program is made possible by the partnership with local businessman Sergio Bordenabe of High Five Pics. Bordenabe is a photographer who has offered his services to help create and print the trading cards. “He has been a fantastic asset and has worked above and beyond our expectations to make the program a success,” says Johnstone. With 45 cards to collect, Florham Park youths certainly have their work cut out for them and are encouraged to approach officers at safe moments to ask for cards and even to trade with their friends. Awards will be given to the first three school-aged children
to collect the 45 card set. The awards for this collection will be given out at the Aug. 2 National Night Out. The National Night Out is “a community-police awareness-raising event in the U.S., held the first Tues. of Aug.,” says Johnstone. At this event the public will be invited to meet with their local police officers in a social setting allowing the community to gain a better awareness about the police officer’s jobs as well as view their vehicles and equipment. “Each year we feature a helicopter landing, Fatal Vision DWI Simulation Goggles, McGruff the Crime Dog as well as free food and face painting,” saying Johnstone. The whole concept of the trading cards sums up the object continued on page 4

Florham Park Schools Exceed Expectations, Embrace Upcoming Year
W
Nick Rauschenberger is pictured with his teacher, Camille Abdy.
By Catherine Bialkowski hat do reading workshops, chemistry competitions, and brand-new laptops have in common? All of these things are part of what made Florham Park School (FPKS) District’s 2015-2016 academic year memorable. A specially-designed reading and writing workshop program was instituted this year in order to improve learning comprehension. One of its benefits is that it can easily be individualized to fit each student’s needs. “This program passed beyond the bounds of what I thought it would be,” said Melissa Varley, superintendent of schools. “The teachers embraced it to its full extent and took charge.” Because of its major success, the program will continue to be a part of the language arts department’s teaching method. Students can work at their own pace, which moti-
continued from page 2 of the National Night Out, to raise community awareness and create a positive rapport with the officers and the community members they serve. “It is important for everyone to realize that our officers are people just like them,” says Johnstone. “Sometimes that is lost when dealing with officers in uniform. This program will hopefully increase interaction and take away apprehensiveness that people sometimes have towards uniformed police officers.” The FPPD officers are just as excited as the children are to be involved in such a program, each officer right up to the chief has been busy handing out their cards. “The officers really enjoy getting to meet people,” says Johnstone. “A lot of times we meet people in difficult or unfortunate circumstance. This provides an opportunity for the officers to interact with the community without the stress of being on a call.” An important reminder to all card collectors is to keep in mind they should not approach an officer in the roadway, on a traffic stop or when they are handling a call. The best way to collect the cards is to simply wave the officer over and the officer will come over if they are able. Another last reminder from the officers at the FPPD is to have fun and be safe!
vates rather than discourages them. An exciting moment for Ridgedale, Florham Park’s middle school, came when eighth-grader Nick Rauschenberger placed in the top 10 at the 2016 National Chemistry Challenge in Philadelphia, Pa., a competition for students around the country. continued from page 4 ipant from New Jersey, Rauschenberger competed with 38 other middle school students at the Kimmel Center, showcasing his knowledge of chemistry. Needless to say, Rauschenberger’s teachers could not be prouder of this outstanding achievement. Before school let out for summer, an exciting decision was made regarding next year. Starting in the fall, FPKS District will launch a new One-to-One laptop program using Google chromebooks, allowing students to access information faster. This step forward in technology is exciting for both students and teachers, who will be able to communicate in new ways, as well as coordinate assignments more easily. The program is certainly something to which everyone involved is looking forward. Additionally, this year saw the coming-together of a new school board. “We had to be consistent and on the same page,” Varley explained. She went on to say that although the administrative council had to work hard and learn new, modernized skills needed for success in 2016, this project is one of her best memories of the year, as all the planning and hard work paid off in the
end. Before commencement on June 22, the eighth grade, a class of 122 students, took their annual field trip to Washington, D.C., receiving numerous compliments on their good behavior. “The teachers are already looking forward to next year,” said Varley. Always a success, this trip is both educational and fun for the students, who will start high school in the fall. Next year will hold no shortage of academic advancement. In July, a new English and language arts supervisor will join the reading and writing workshop team, working to further improve this innovative program. Aside from that, the chromebooks will undoubtedly prove to be an incredible step forward in both technology and communication for FPKS District. The Florham Park 2015-2016 school year was a success in all aspects - ingenious academic programs, exceptional student achievements and highly anticipated staff improvements. Its legacies will certainly continue into next year and years after. In the words of Varley, “This year exceeded all expectations. It went beyond leaps and bounds.”

Magaletta Transforms Properties To One-Of-A Kind Masterpieces
By Cheryl Conway ustom, creation, transformation, specialization, originality and endless options come to mind when describing the services provided at Magaletta Design Environment in Parsippany. With 25 years in the industry, business owner Matthew Magaletta of Florham Park knows how to transform any property or backyard into a sensational yet functional space that carries with it that “wow factor with any glance of the eye. Magaletta Design Environment is a full landscape design, custom pool builder specializing in outdoor kitchens, full masonry work, decks, outdoor lighting, lawn maintenance, waterfalls and just about everything for outdoor properties. Magaletta Designs is not a “typical landscaping company. “There’s a lot of landscapers out there, says Magaletta. Anyone can cut lawns or plant bushes. “People call me when they want their properties and backyards to stand out beyond the rest. When they want to wow their neighbors, that’s when they call me in. Involved in landscaping since he was 13, Magaletta started out cutting lawns for neighbors. He worked with his neighbor who was a landscape designer.
“I loved working outside, explains Magaletta. “I took a liking to it, and continued throughout high school and college. His experience and passion for the landscaping industry “just grew and grew and grew, he says. “I have the eye for it, he adds. “Everyone has their niche in life; this is my niche. I can create anything and turn it into a work of art. Unlike other landscape companies, at Magaletta, “We specialize in custom designs for our clients, he says. To ensure that customers like the project that is planned, Magaletta provides a 3D video design to the customer. “We show them a 3D design, so they can see what their house will look like on the outside when the project is completed. While other companies offer a 3D video, Magaletta’s “specialty design is quite spectacular, he says. Most of Magaletta’s client base is for private homes in Morris and Essex counties but he has done some industrial work such as the landscaping and design at Park Savoy in Florham Park. “We work where the client wants us, says Magaletta, adding that it will travel even further like to South Jersey if requested. No matter the locale, “every job we are doing is a cus-
tom project, he says. “We custom to customers’ likes and wants. He uses all kinds of products and equipment, all different patios and paver stones. All of the lighting work is LED; “that’s the norm now. Working in the landscaping business has been enjoyable for Magaletta. “What I enjoy the most is going to my client’s house and transforming their properties to showcases in the neighborhood. I feel proud that my signs are on their properties. I become personable with clients; they become my friend. Homeowners will not be disappointed contracting with Magaletta for all of their outdoor property needs. “We are a reputable company with over 25 years of experience, says Magaletta. “We are honest, we are knowledgeable and you will have an owner, myself, on the projects. For the month of September, Magaletta is offering three different promotions: 10 percent off any landscaping construction job; $150 off landscaping design of property; or buy 10 LED lights and get three free. For more information, go to magalettadesigns.com. To arrange for an appointment or contract a project, call 973539-1818.
