Music Softens Challenges Faced By East Hanover Family’s Struggle With Autism
By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta t was at a birthday party when Tom and Carol Corea of East Hanover realized their child, TJ (Thomas Joseph), was not like others. “Even for a one-year-old, he couldn’t do what others did,” Tom said. “He was like a deer in headlights. He didn’t reach any milestones. The kid couldn’t do anything; he had no concept of playing with a toy.” Tom explained that the knowledge about autism, back in the late 1990, was a “thimbleful” compared to what it is today; and he and his wife were trying everything with the state and system. It was also rare in the late 1990’s for a guy to be an “at home dad.” Before TJ was born, Tom and Carol had made that decision because Tom was drumming with a band “Bad Attitude” and in 1998 they were signed to a recording contract. Tom loved taking care of TJ and balancing fatherhood with a career, as he was able to stay home during the day and Carol would watch over TJ at night. By the time TJ was three years old, he was sent to a pre-K handicap class. TJ was so angry he was biting teachers and banging his head against walls. Tom had to go to school with him every day until they got armed guards and put a crash helmet on him. At the end of the school year, Tom was told that TJ could no longer go to the preschool. “They couldn’t deal with him at all,” Tom said. TJ also had a seizure disorder and throughout the years has had more than 100 grand mal seizures. Tom continued his music career in order to be at home close to TJ during the day. In June of 2002 he launched his home recording studio “Babyfishmouth.” He invited his musician friends to record at the studio and by December they released a CD of Christmas music. These CDs became a tradition, and over the years Tom released 13 compilations of holiday favorites. At two weeks shy of TJ’s fourth birthday, Tom and Carol enrolled him in the preschool program at the Allegro Autism School in Cedar Knolls. TJ started to move forward, but his behavior was still a big issue. TJ still wasn’t able to talk, so the only thing he could do was get mad and frustrated. But on a positive note, with TJ in school, it allowed Tom some free time and he happily took a part-time position teaching drums at Raritan Music Center. He said, “Over time, I moved from private lessons to working with infants to
preschoolers in a group called Circle Time Live where we perform children’s songs in an interactive format, a job that I still enjoy doing today.” Tom and Carol’s second child, Jesse, was born in 2004, and in time Tom was able to volunteer in Jesse’s school, helping out with the theatre program while still attending to the life led needs of TJ. After 10 years at Allegro, at 13-years-old TJ was sent to Developmental Learning Center (DLC) in Warren, which is technically a public school for autistic kids. TJ is still there at 19 and will be there for another two years. At 19, TJ is functioning on the level of a two- or three-yearold. Tom said, “It’s very routine-oriented. He’s very difficult to deal with. You have to know all the quirks or he loses it. It’s a good 40 or 50 percent better than it has been, but you have to keep in mind, he’s constantly on the edge of getting mad.” Currently TJ is on two drugs for seizures, one of the two is also an anti-psychotic; and another anti-psychotic to keep behavior in check. Though sometimes TJ’s speech is very clear, most often his speech is that of a person who had a stroke, according to Tom. “He doesn’t know how to get the words out of his head,” Tom said. It was Dr. Orrin Devinsky, who has practices in NYC and New Jersey, and visits St. Barnabas in Livingston, who put TJ on the medications. And thanks to Devinsky, TJ has been seizure-free for three years and has discovered a love for dance. “He has all his favorite songs,” Tom said. “He loves Pitbull, Bruno Mars. When you go to any social event, he’ll dance for hours.” Tom paused, smiled, and added, enthusiastically, “That’s his life.”

Bark For Life Contributes To Cancer Cures For Furry Friends
By J. L. Shively he sun was shining and tails were wagging at the Bark for Life Relay held at the Florham Park Gazebo on May 21. This was the third annual Bark for Life campaign held in Florham Park since it was started by Stacy Saul and Linda Sardo. Much like a Relay for Life event, Bark for Life is a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society with the most notable difference being that many of the relay team members are four-footed and furry. The Bark for Life event is a different kind of fundraiser and special in its own right. This event is really “more of a festival than a walk,” says Sarah Greulich, a community manager with the American Cancer Society. “This is my favorite event and I look forward to it all year,” says Greulich, noting the excitement and activity that takes place at a Bark for Life event. Just as the Relay for Life honors those who have or are currently battling cancer, Bark for Life honors “the life-long contributions of our canine caregivers,” says Greulich. Canine caregivers, Greulich explains, can be dogs who have worked as therapy dogs, police dogs and guide dogs or even just dogs who are cancer survivors themselves. These dogs team up with their owners to form relay teams for this special event held just once a
year in Florham Park. This event, Greulich says, “presents an opportunity for people to be empowered through their canine companion partnerships and to contribute to cancer cures through the mission of the American Cancer Society.” While still a touching celebration this relay is also a lot of fun for both the dogs and their owners. “We do an honorary walk to start the event,” Greulich says but most of the event is a chance for dogs and their owners to unite in the battle against cancer and make some new friends. This year’s event had around 200 human attendees and 80 dogs of all different sizes and backgrounds. The people who partici-

pate come to “celebrate cancer survivorship, to honor people lost to cancer and to fundraise” for a great cause, explains Greulich. The American Cancer Society’s mission is to eliminate cancer by funding research and spreading education about cancer as well as advocating those in need. The Bark for Life event is brought to life by many sponsors including Total Health Physical Medicine and Rehab Center, K9 Resorts of Madison, Royal Canine Dog Training LLC and many more. This year’s event raised around $11,000 which will be donated directed to the Amer-
ican Cancer Society and its efforts to help survivors, caregivers and continue to pioneer cancer research. “Service canine companions demonstrate unconditional love, joy, security, compassion and no judgments of cancer survivor’s abilities and appearances,” says Greulich, explaining how important a four-legged friend can be during such a difficult time in a person’s life. “The American Cancer Society’s Bark for Life is an irresistible way to partner with your canine best friend, smile and make new friends, canine and human,” concludes Greulich.

People Flock To Turtle Back Zoo For Open House
By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta housands of people fled towards the gates of Turtle Back Zoo, West Orange, on Sat., June 4, for the 14th Annual Essex County Open House. There was live music, clowns, carnival games, treasure chests, giveaways, prize wheels and trivia tests, providing exciting entertainment for children as their parents gathered around more than 10 information tables that provided information about public awareness programs and services provided by Essex County. Directors and employees were on hand to answer questions. It was a great way for Essex County residents to meet the people who work for their county. The Open House included free admission to the zoo, which features: a mini-golf safari miniature golf course, sea lions, sting rays and sharks in a touch tank, a state-of-the-art reptile and education building, jaguars, snow leopards, Gibbon apes, wolves, otters, alligators, reptiles, and bears. There is also a beautiful gift shop. Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, Jr., said, “We’ve done this for fourteen years. We’re here to socialize and network for Essex County. And it’s an opportunity to see the zoo for free.” According to DiVincenzo, last year there were 16,000 people in attendance. He said, “We’re hoping to hit 20,000 today.” This event was formerly held at a small setting in the Hall
of Records, according to Anthony Puglisi, Public Information director. But the zoo can accommodate a lot more people. Puglisi said, “Not many people know about what the county government does and how it affects their life. It’s informational and we try to make it fun.” Claudette Hampton, case manager and nurse at Essex County Special Child Health Services said, “We’re here to educate the public about community health and special child services. And [for the public to] know about various resources in Essex County.” Other Essex County tables exhibits included: Paper Mill Playhouse, Family Wrap, New Jersey’s Early Intervention System, Essex County Juvenile Detention Center, New Jersey Mental Health Cares, OACANP (The Oranges ACA Navigator Project), and Essex County Vocational Technical Schools. Attendees were able to enjoy the new giraffe exhibit which just opened up, as well as the recently opened bison exhibit with a new viewing area to get up close and look into. Puglisi said, “Before there was a split rail fence. You couldn’t get close to the animals.” The prairie dog exhibit will also be upgraded. Puglisi said, “We’re changing the way the public views so you get more of a clear picture; before it was a high glass wall.” A lion exhibit is also in the works. In addition to the new animal exhibits and developments, the café expanded to two stories, which triples the capacity

of what it was before. “It will help with crowds,” said Puglisi. “Improvements enhance the area for the public.” According to DiVincenzo, “NJ Monthly” magazine named Turtle Back Zoo the best zoo in New Jersey the last four years. And the zoo has always been awarded with a Certificate of Excellence in the last three years. For more information on Essex County, visit www.essexcountynj.com.

Help Protect The Environment By Recycling Used Tires
ssex County residents are encouraged to bring used and unwanted tires to the Essex County Used Tire Recycling Day on Sat., June 18, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Essex County Public Works Department in Cedar Grove. “We are always looking for new and innovative ways to protect our environment and reduce our waste stream, said Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. “Along with our Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day and Computer & Electronics Recycling Day, turning in old tires is another great way to remove hazardous materials from our waste stream and have them disposed properly and safely. Not only are old tires a nuisance, but they pose a serious health hazard. Rain water can collect in tires that are left outside. This can
become an ideal environment for mosquitoes to breed and creates a serious public health and quality of life problem. During the Essex County Used Tire Recycling Day, rubber tires with or without metal rims will be accepted. Rims will not be returned to residents; they will be recycled. The collected tires will be delivered to a state-licensed transfer waste facility, which will recycle the tires into new uses. The Essex County Used Tire Recycling Day is for Essex County residents only. Residents are not charged when they bring materials, but they must provide proof of residency at the site. Commercial businesses may not drop off materials. For more information, call the Essex County Department of Public Works at 973-226-8500, ext. 2580.

Florham Park Student Wins State-Wide Chemistry Competition
by Ashley Bouwense idgedale Middle School eighthgrader, Nick Rauschenberger, won the New Jersey “You Be the Chemist Challenge April 26. The 14-year-old competed against 31 other NJ middle school students from fifth to eighth grade. The Chemist Challenge, located at BASF North American Headquarters in Florham Park, consisted of question-and-answer style questions about chemistry concepts and applications. There were a total of seven rounds in the competition, where students were eliminated after each round. The questions were projected onto a PowerPoint-like presentation, and the students had to buzz in and then answer the question. Parents and other guests watched students compete from sideline bleachers. “I had a fun time, Rauschenberger said. As winner, Rauschenberger will represent NJ in the National “You Be the Chemist Challenge: Around the World of Chemistry! June 20 in Philadelphia. He is amongst 39 other middle school students

Chemistry Competition... continued from previous page Rauschenberger and his mother expressed their many thanks to his seventhgrade science teacher, Camille Abdy, who introduced Rauschenberger and her other students to the competition. Abdy was able to attend the competition at BASF North American Headquarters in Florham Park, and will support Rauschenberger by attending the national competition in June at the Kimmel Center. The five-day trip to Philadelphia for the challenge will also include dinners, recep-
tions, award ceremonies and science exhibits for the participants and guests. Rauschenberger’s parents and two younger brothers, Ryan and Timmy, will attend with him. Rauschenberger’s favorite subject in school is chemistry, and his overall interest in the sciences can be said to be “in his blood,” as his grandfather was an earth science teacher. “I also read a lot of chemistry books,” he said. “That really jogged my interest in the subject.”
I
In the future, Rauschenberger hopes to pursue a career in organic chemistry. This field is focused on the study of living things’ chemical compositions, “things that contain the carbon atom,” and constitutions. “Chemistry impacts so much of our world,” said Rauschenberger . “It helps advance us in the future and solves many of the problems we face in our world.” And for those who may be nervous to compete in academic competitions, such as the “You Be the Chemist Challenge,” he encouraged, “Don’t be. It’s fun!”

Local Congregation ‘That Could’ Moves To New Rental For Continued Growth
By Cheryl Conway here will be more room for members and their guests this year for High Holiday services now that Congregation Beth Torah in Florham Park has relocated to a larger space to congregate. The conservative synagogue had been functioning out of a small house at 165 Ridgedale Ave. since 1987. They decided to sell that property and have recently moved the shul a few blocks away to rent space at an office building at 215 Ridgedale Ave. Members have been enjoying their new location and are looking forward to reestablishing programs like the Hebrew school and mahjong. The shul celebrated its first service at its new home on Fri., May 6. “We are a shul in an office building,” says Susan Denholtz, president of Congregation Beth Torah. Knowing that there was space waiting to be rented in a vacant building, Denholtz says congregation leaders did not want to pass up a great oppor-

tunity. “We wanted to maintain our presence in Florham Park; not being able to erect our own building, we decided to rent space in town,” she says. “We decided it was time for a change. We were in like a little house. It wasn’t in great condition.” Congregation Beth Torah was in its former location for 30 years. “We owned it, had a mortgage and sold it,” explains Denholtz. The makings of the congregation began in 1983 when a Livingston resident approached an Orthodox Irvington Synagogue about starting a new synagogue, Suburban Jewish Center. Community members starting meeting at the Florham Park Country Club and in houses. Fifty families contributed a down payment and in 1987, moved into 165 Ridgedale, which was a former carpet store, explains Denholtz. “It was a little house but it was a carpet store,” she says. They changed its name to Congregation Beth Torah and maintained a conservative affiliation.
“It became our temple,” she says, with a Hebrew school, a part-time rabbi and a renovated kitchen. With 30 family members strong, the

continued from previous page “It’s a nice building; just right for us,” says Denholtz. “We wanted to maintain our presence in Florham Park” as most of the members do live in town. “It’s a small town; we are the only synagogue in town.” As a member for 22 years, Denholtz describes the congregation as a “very relaxed atmosphere; we support each other in good times and bad. We are very close knit group. We are small but very active. We refer to ourselves as ‘the little engine that could.’ We are very close and very active and welcome new members to join in the fun.” At the congregation, members enjoy adult education, sisterhood, holiday dinners. It plans to resume mahjong lessons and will introduce a tot Shabbat for children as well as Hebrew School. “We had a very successful Hebrew School,” says Denholtz, but the last student will be celebrating his bar mitzva next month. “We hope new families move into town so we can resume that.”

Cantor Jonathon Comisar has been the cantor and spiritual leader of the congregation for the past two years. Denholtz describes him as a “musical genius” who is “very spiritual.” Denholtz says of Comisar, “he’s young and he infused new life into us. Younger than we’ve had in the past,” he has “infused new ideas, very forward thinking and very spiritual and there’s always music.” Excited about upcoming services, Denholtz says “High Holidays this year will be in our own space, newly renovated, all new everything.” Last year, as in the past five to six years, holiday services have been held at a hotel. The former building was able to accommodate Friday night services, but not High Holiday services when extra family members and guests attend. “We are very happy, we will be having it in our own little home,” says Denholtz. For information about Congregation Beth Torah and participation in future events, call congregation President Susan Denholtz at 973-377-6020; visit congregationbethtoraahnj.org.

Looking For A Few Good Men from fatherless homes – 32 times the average. 85 percent of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes – 20 times the average. (Center for Disease Control). 80 percent of rapists with anger problems come from fatherless homes –14 times the average. (Justice & Behavior, Vol 14, p. 403 26). 71 percent of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes – nine times the average. (National Principals Association Report). From these statistics, it is easy to see that men who have abdicated their roles as fathers is the single greatest problem in society today. Dads need to step up to assume their rightful roles as leaders of the family. Kids are looking at them, and studying them, to see if they are really going to protect them, lead them and love them. It is time to once again make it cool to honor those men who have stood up to be great dads, grand-dads or mentors. Enter the That’s My Dad Movement. This movement is designed to honor the man, not necessarily one’s dad, who most impacted one’s life. The movement, inspired by the new book “That’s My Dad!” just released by Broadstreet Publishing, asks people young and old to visit www.ThatsMyDadMovement.com and follow four simple instructions to honor that man and to encourage others to
en have an identity issue. Hollywood often depicts men as self-centered couch potatoes who are always looking to party, act like adolescents and play video games, while shirking all of men’s responsibilities along the way. One example of this lack of respect for fatherhood may be best illustrated by a recent survey of holiday church attendance. At the bottom of the list with Independence Day was Father’s Day. As a matter of fact, most people no longer can even say when Father’s Day is! Why has this once welcomed day to honor fathers become little more than a footnote to church attendance or the evening news? Despite the fact many have fallen for that misrepresentation, there are many good men who are great dads. They have embraced the God-given role of fatherhood and are impacting their children by helping them to build and live successful lives. Conversely, the one common denominator of many of society’s ills—pornography, human trafficking, abortion, rape, murder, alcoholism, teen suicide, and incarceration—can be traced to absentee fathers. According to statistics, 63 percent of youth suicides are from fatherless homes (US Dept. Of Health/Census) –five times the average. 90 percent of all homeless and runaway children are

Edison Day Connected Cool Learning-Discovery Groups and the NPS Centennial Junior Ranger Program in Time for Summer
by Michele Guttenberger n Saturday June 4th the West Orange National Historical Park Site of Thomas Alva Edison celebrated Edison Day. It was a day of free admission and special programs for every age. The park had collaborated with West Orange partners to connect community places of continued discovery and learning under their big outdoor tent. There were learning exhibits from the American Chemistry Society (ACS) http://www.njacs.org/, HackNCraftNJ Makerspace http://www.hackncraftnj.org/ , around the world club radio chats from the Tri-County Radio Association www.tcara.org, Black Maria cinematic arts demo – (Nonprofit) Mono No Aware http://mononoawarefilm.com, and a courtyard electric car display from – New Jersey Electric Automobile Association https://njeaa.org/ A special recognition was given to the Junior Ranger program table. On August 25, 2016 the National Park Service is turning 100 years old. In 1916 when most of us Americans still traveled by horse and buggy, we found popular support to rally for the initiatives Republican President Theodore Roosevelt had started in preserving America’s amazing natural wonders and historic places. In 1916 there were 35 national parks and monuments. Today there are
over 400 National Park sites all over the country, in places you might never expect like - the genuine factory lab buildings Thomas Edison used to conduct his innovative engineering and technology for new modern homes and businesses of the late 19th Century and beyond. Edison Day was an opportunity for kids to become a Centennial Junior Ranger with a commemorative 100th Anniversary Badge fittingly made from etched wood. New Jersey has 12 National Park sites. And many folks have started an American summer tradition to visit these NPS places and collect different park Junior Ranger patch and badges as family earned National souvenirs. You are never too old to be a Junior Ranger. There are dedicated websites for each Park to view their programs. The West Orange site is www.nps.gov/edis To obtain the Junior Ranger badge there is a set of Junior Ranger workbook activities for children from ages 5 and up to complete. After they successfully complete their list of activities they must take an oath that they promise to share their knowledge with others and enjoy and protect all National Parks. This recognition certificate is signed by a Park Ranger and presented to them along with their badge. Here is the link to download the Centennial Junior Ranger activity workbook to get a head start this summer.

Local Blood Drives Offered
ew Jersey Blood Services plans to conduct local blood drives which are open to the public. The following drives are scheduled: Fri., June 17, Shoprite, Flanders, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wed., June 22, St. Francis Health Resort, Denville, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thurs., June 23, Moose Lodge 541, Dover, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fri., June 24, Madison Area YMCA, Madison, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mon., June 27, Knights of Columbus 3665, Netcong, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thurs., June 30, Rockaway Townsquare Mall, Rockaway, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. New Jersey Blood Services, a division of New York Blood Center (NYBC) is asking for help to maintain an adequate supply of all blood types, but especially O-negative – the “universal” blood which can be transfused into anyone in an emergency. In addition, hundreds of additional blood drives need to be scheduled to meet projected hospital demand. Current inventory of several blood types is running below the desired target
level. “It’s simple: hospital patient demand for blood often outpaces our best efforts to recruit donors and schedule blood drives,” said NYBC Executive Director of Donor Recruitment Andrea Cefarelli. “There are always reasons but we have to overcome that for the sake of hospital patients who need us.” “This is one of the toughest times of the year,” Cefarelli added. “We’re asking for our dedicated supporters to roll up their sleeves to make sure we’re able to provide our hospital partners with whatever they need to take care of their patients.” Blood products have a short shelf life – from five to 42 days, so constant replenishment is necessary. Each and every day there are patients who depend on the transfusion of red blood cells, platelets and plasma to stay alive. But blood and blood products can’t be manufactured. They can only come from volunteer blood donors who take an hour to attend a blood drive or visit a donor center. To donate blood or for information on how to organize a blood drive call 1-800933-2566; visit: www.nybloodcenter.org.
