Local Woman Is Looking For A Special Angel By Elsie Walker uzanne Sanders of Long Valley describes her friend, Tori Reade, as “empathetic, loving, fun, and the most organized mom I’ve ever met.” Reade, also of Long Valley, has two daughters, nine-year old Erin and sixyear old Hayden, and a husband named Rich. Sanders and Reade, met when their older daughters became friends and then their own friendship grew. Now Sanders is one of “Tori’s Angels,” a nickname that Reade gave a group of friends who have been at her side as she bat-

tles Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer. However, Reade needs some more angels. A fundraising GoFundme page to help Reade with medical and related expenses has been set up at https:// www.gofundme.com/torisbattle. Also, as part of her treatment, Reade needs a stem cell transplant which requires finding a donor match. “Be The Match” events, at which cheek swabs are taken, are being set up to help find that donor for Reade. Recent events have been in Hackettstown with

more in the works at other locations. In addition, people can go online to bethematch.org, promo code 4torisbattle, and find out about being a donor. Sanders noted that Reade “always had a ‘thing’ for angels” which is how “Tori’s Angels” jokingly came to be the nickname for the close friends helping Reade. “Everyone who has shown support through the GoFundme, her food train, the Be The Match donor drive, or in any other way are all her ‘angels,’ ” says Sanders. Diagnosed in Oct. 2016, treatment of Reade’s condition requires not only the use of her own stem cells, but also those of a donor. As explained on Reade’s GoFundme page: Multiple Myeloma “is a form of blood cancer that develops in the bone marrow. A common result of Multiple Myeloma is kidney damage, and for Tori, was how this was first identified.” Treatment started with

Reade receiving dialysis three days a week to help with her kidneys. In addition to that, she received cycles of chemotherapy treatments and steroids to attack the cancer. The page goes on to say that “When her treatment hit a plateau
in December, it was decided to go ahead with a stem cell transplant.” She has already had a transplant from herself, an Autologous transplant and now, the second step would be the transplant of stem cells from a donor: an Allogeneic transplant.
Saunders explained why they are looking for a match outside the family: “Parents and children in situations like these are only 50 percent matches and their ages make them not viable for an individual like Tori.” continued on page 2

Looking For A Special Angel... cont. from previous page The Be A Match website explains that the preference is for donors ages 18-44. Ages 45 to age 60 can register, but only online. Individuals can go to the Be A Match site to learn more about using Peripheral Blood Stem Cells (PBSC) to fight Multiple Myeloma and what happens if they are indeed a match and can be a donor. Also, by going into the “Support the Cause” part of the site, a person can join the Be A Match registry and go about seeing if he or she is a match for Tori. The site will ask for a promo code and that is 4torisbattle. A cheek swab kit will be sent to them. Alternately, people ages 18-44 can have their cheeks swabbed at a one of the match events for Tori.
Locally, match events have already been held at Centenary College and at the Czig Meister Brewery. In January, the women’s lacrosse team at Centenary ran an event as they knew of the need through one of the “angels,” Nora Tufford. The “Have Beer, Save a Life” event was held at the end of February. “Czig Meister graciously allowed us to use their facility and a number of local food establishments donated food. The Long Valley Brew Pub, Valley Restaurant, L&J Catering, Hong Kong Palace, Pandan Room, Topo, Marley’s, Mama’s Cafe, and Center Stage Cakes all donated. [Tori’s] father gave swabbers a drink ticket and paid the tab, and the amazing brewery was
at their disposal. A Be The Match representative was also in attendance walking us through the entire registration/swabbing process. We did have people just donate money to the family and friends of Tori’s from work were selling ‘Believe’ bracelets. Unused proceeds from those sales will be donated to the Multiple Myeloma Research foundation (themmrf.org),” shared Saunders. People can also read more about Tori’s type of cancer on that site. Locally, future Be A Match events are in the works with possible locations being in Newton and Lake Mohawk. A cousin of Tori’s is planning one in Belmar on May 13. Other ways to help Tori can be found on the Go-
Fundme page that has been set up for her: https://www. gofundme.com/torisbattle. The page includes updates on Tori and a way to donate money and shares other ideas for helping her family during this difficult time.

“If you want to do something, but are unsure of what, you can also send them a gift card for lunch after treatment or Dunkin Donuts or whatever you’d like. Regardless, Tori and Rich will certainly appreciate it.
You can email contact.torisbattle@gmail.com for an address,” the page shares. Tori Reade has angels, but is looking for a special one, that one that will be her match. All it takes is a cheek swab to see.

Arc Of Warren County Gains Support Through Radiothon
S
By Elsie Walker tories of how the Arc of Warren County touched the lives of people with intellectual disabilities will be featured next month through the 27th Annual Radiothon. On April 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the radio waves of WRNJ available at 1510 AM plus 92.7 and 104.7 FM, plans to share these stories in an effort to collect donations to help the organization continue its work. The Arc’s major fundraiser brings awareness, giving a “voice” to those it serves as they share their stories. Kevin Guyette, the Arc of Warren County’s Director of Development and Executive Director of The Arc Foundation, said this year’s goal is to raise $65,000. Recently, she took out some
time to discuss this fundraising and awareness raising tradition, which is fueled by those Guyette refers to as VIPs (Very Involved People) and has raised more than $1.3 million since it started in 1991. Guyette began by explaining her role and what the Radiothon funds do. “My role is to bring business and community leaders together for a day to raise funds in support of Arc programs for children and adults who have intellectual disabilities,” says Guyette. “I coordinate those volunteers, to get them to the showroom of Route 46 Hyundai, formerly Hackettstown Hyundai, on Rt.46 in Hackettstown where they reach out to their personal and professional contacts for pledges to The Arc.
“Those pledges help support a variety of programs including therapeutic recreation, family support, and Camp Warren,” she explains. “These are programs that also provide much-needed respite for families of children and adults with disabilities. Many donors readily step up with a $400 pledge to send a child to Camp Warren for a week in the summer. Camp Warren is located in Knowlton Township and offers a superior camping experience for children of all abilities.” The first Radiothon was held in March 1991 which is National Developmental Disabilities Month. Fundraising wasn’t the primary consideration at that time. The ideas was to bring about awareness
and Guyette said they were thrilled at the response, that so many business and community leaders, parents, and staff showed up to speak on the air about the role The Arc had played in their lives. However, the real joy and surprise came when, while their secondary goal was just to raise enough to pay for the cost of running phone lines into the loca-
tion -the location that first year was the Knechel Ford showroom- they found that had raised $18,000 and people were already looking forward to the next year’s event and wanted to be included. “It is a uniquely successful fundraiser that has a minimal expense line and maximum results for all involved,” said Guyette.
Today the Radiothon has about 100 volunteers. Guyette said they don’t advertise for volunteers, but rather use word of mouth, as those with Radiothon experience share those experiences with others to bring in new VIPS and volunteers. Guyette noted that many volunteers, and donors, have been with the Radiocontinued on page 12

Acupuncture... What’s The Point? by Kearstin R. Tripi, L.Ac cupuncture and Traditional Chinese medicine has become increasingly popular over the past 25 years in the United States. However, many healthcare consumers are still unaware of this relatively painless and effective treatment. Acupuncture is useful in treating conditions such as musculoskeletal pain, stress, migraines, and infertility, to name a few. Some consumers are apprehensive about Acupuncture due to a fear of needles. However, unlike the hypodermic needles that are used to administer shots or take blood, Acupuncture needles are extremely thin. In some cases, the patient might experience a slight prick
A
or tingling sensation at the needle site, but most people report that the procedure is painless and quite relaxing. The efficacy of this ancient medicine speaks for itself and has helped Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine become a bigger part of mainstream healthcare. Every year, more and more physicians are opting to combine Eastern and Western treatments for their patients’ well-being. Research from the National Institute of Health supports this movement showing that Acupuncture is effective for use in pain management, osteoarthritis, postoperative or chemotherapy-related nausea, addiction, stroke rehabilitation, infertility and asthma, among others. The World
Health Organization also lists acupuncture’s efficacy in relieving anxiety, panic disorders and insomnia along with forty-two other medical conditions. Acupuncture is, in fact, a Science based medicine backed by research. Acupuncture is a modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine that originated in Ancient China over 5,000 years ago. The Ancient Chinese discovered that every living being has energy that flows through invisible meridians (energy lines) throughout the body. This energy, known as “Qi” is the motive life force. In healthy individuals the Qi flows smoothly through the channels/ meridians. Imbalance in the flow of Qi results in illness and/or
disease. The same basic principles are used in treating various conditions, today. Acupuncture can be used a sole method of treatment, but also works well as an adjunct therapy. How does Acupuncture Work? Multiple studies have shown that Acupuncture initiates various biological responses. There are several theories to explain how Acupuncture works. In a nutshell, Acupuncture helps the body to do what it was meant to do... heal itself. Some of the most common theories include: - Acupuncture reduces inflammation and relaxes muscles - Acupuncture stimulates
the release of endorphins, which relieve pain - Acupuncture stimulates the release of neurotransmitters (substances that that transmit nerve impulses to the brain) -Acupuncture has a profound effect on the Autonomic Nervous System - Acupuncture stimulates circulation - Acupuncture enhances the body’s immune response - Acupuncture influences the electrical currents of the body Does Acupuncture Hurt? Extremely fine needles are used in the treatment of Acupuncture, making the experience almost painless. Most patients don’t even feel the needles being inserted. The Acupuncture needles used are as fine as
a few hairs on your head. All of my patients find their Acupuncture treatments to be very relaxing. In fact, most people fall asleep during their treatment. What is a typical Acupuncture treatment like? Upon arrival the patient is asked to fill out a detailed health history questionnaire. Then, the acupuncturist will review the health history with the patient and go over the patient’s primary health concern and lifestyle. The acupuncturist will take the patient’s pulses and look at his/her tongue (In Chinese medicine the tongue and pulses are representative of the various organ/meridian systems and help in the diagnostic process). continued on next page

The number of Acupuncture treatments needed is based on the severity and chronicity of the condition. However, most patients experience relief after the very first treatment. What kind of needles are used? Tiny filiform needles are used for Acupuncture treatment. All of the needles are disposable, pre-sterilized and pre-packaged. After each treatment, the needles are thrown away
and new needles are used every time. Are there any side effects of Acupuncture treatment? Acupuncture is a safe treatment option, offering little to no side effects, making it an ideal alternative to more invasive procedures. Most people do not experience any ill side effects from Acupuncture. Occasionally, minor bruising can occur at the needle site.
Acupuncture...
cont. from previous page After the interview, the practitioner will come up with a diagnosis and treatment plan for the patient. Then, the needles will be inserted into various acupuncture points. The patient may feel a heaviness or tingling sensation around the needle insertion site. The needles are typically retained for 20-30 minutes. How many Acupuncture treatments are needed?

Holy Week Events Offered At Trinity
he Trinity United Methodist Church in Hackettstown is offering two special worship events for Holy Week. On Thur., April 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the church’s sanctuary, 13 costumed
men will re-create Jesus’ washing of the feet and the Last Supper. Communion will be given to all worshippers. The church’s pastor, Rev. Frank Fowler, describes it as “a moving service, with candles being
extinguished to mark the flight of the disciples.” On Good Friday, April 14 starting a 6 p.m., the church will be holding a cross walk. Beginning at the church, the walk will go up and down Main Street.
It is open to everyone. The group carries no sign or church identification, but simply walks behind a person carrying a cross. The walk will end with Good Friday worship in the church’s sanctuary at 7:30 p.m. “As we walk, a drum beats a slow rhythm, and the walkers walk in silence,” sais Fowler. “There will be people of all ages, including children, for whom it is a powerful event. Even as Main Street traffic passes, we note many people pausing to look and ponder. The procession carrying
the cross normally numbers about 75 people. There is free child care for both of the worship services. For more information, contact the church at (908) 852-3020. The Cross Walk will be held at 6 p.m. Friday from Trinity - up and down main street - ending with a 7:30 p.m. Good Friday worship service in our sanctuary. It is not candlelit but rather a person carries a large wooden cross at the head of a procession of people who usually number about 75 .
As we walk a drum beats a slow rhythm…..and the walkers walk in silence. There will be people of all ages, including children, for whom it is a powerful event. Even as Main Street traffic passes we note many people Pausing to look and ponder. Occasionally people from the street join in the walk. We carry no sign or church identification.

Radiothon...
cont. from page 6 thon since its inception. “The volunteers range from the business and community volunteers who serve as VIPs to others who serve as hospitality chairs to welcome VIPs and get them settled in, serve as “runners” for needed actions during the day, those who help set up and take down the “command center” of tables and chairs, and those who assist with date entry and clerical follow up,” said Guyette. She noted that there are several groups that always participate, including teams from PNC Bank, Fulton Bank, and First Hope Bank. This year two people from First Hope Bank, Cindy Matthews and Dawn Barbera, are co-chairs of the event. Guyette describes them as “heavy hitters” who regularly bring in huge donations. Also, on hand since the beginning has been Harper’s Bagel & Bake Shop and Mama’s Restaurant and Café Baci, both in Hackettstown. They have donated breakfast and gourmet lunch for the volunteers. I think we figured out once that this translates into close to 500 pizzas and more than 1,000 bagels, not to mention other foods they each have donated,” said Guyette. What can people expect to hear when listening to the Radiothon? “On-air personalities, who include Russ Long, Mike Galley, Ed Kalegi, and Dave Kelber, conduct interviews with VIPs and Arc staff and families to give listeners a clear idea of the importance of their donations. Arc consumers
frequently take a turn at the mic to talk about their lives and the importance of The Arc to their families. Former ABC Radio Network News correspondent Deirdre Bryant, and Norman Worth, WRNJ’s president and general manager, also have their time interviewing our guests and donors. We do not have live entertainment; however, we are very fortunate to have a multitude of friends and supporters who show up to lend some fun and laughter throughout the day. While the focus of Radiothon is on The Arc, we are careful to invite other nonprofits to join us on-air to talk about their organizations. The reason for this is that we often ‘share’ families and individuals who need the services of more than one nonprofit agency, and we want our donors to know the nonprofit community in Warren County is strong and cooperative,” shared Guyette. Meanwhile, VIPS will be on their cells phone calling contacts. People can also make donations through The Arc’s website www.arcwarren.org and can also get information https://www.facebook.com/ ArcWarrenNJ/. “We make a point of letting our VIPs know that just one hour of their time is all it takes to make a difference in helping us to our goal, and many of them stay for a longer period of time because they have success with their calls and are enjoying the ambiance in the room. The Arc conducts all event follow up, including thank you letters and other materials, making it even easier for people to partici-
pate and not have to worry about responsibility after the fact,” said Guyette. Reflecting on past Radiothons, two memories stand out for Guyette: “One of the best moments was late in the day when a woman brought her 13-year-old daughter into the showroom to make her own donation. She brought her piggy bank with her and said she was giving it to us to thank The Arc for all the fun she’d had the previous summer at Camp Warren. The phones had been fairly quiet for about a half hour and when Norman Worth asked her what she’d like people to know about The Arc, she said , very clearly and with great confidence , ‘Give money to Radiothon because it makes me happy!’ The phones went wild and we were still taking pledges an hour later while we were breaking down tables. Another great memory from our first year was seeing the man who drove a catering truck in town come through the door with a fistful of dollar bills, giving us all of his tips from the day. There often are many happy tears during Radiothon.” Guyette shared the importance of the venue and that those involved truly make a difference. “Who thought such a simple idea would blossom into a hugely successful event involving so many corners of the community?” she said. “The beauty of it is, Radiothon is still a simple thing. It’s the commitment and the passion of all involved that makes it extraordinary.”

Save Sea Turtles... cont. from previous page ologists and volunteers prepare for an average of more than 570 sea turtles that are stunned by the cold, a reaction that can lead to frostbite, malnutrition, dehydration, shock, pneumonia and possibly
death. In addition, sea turtles in the Atlantic Ocean are threatened by fishing line entanglement, plastic ingestion, boat strikes, and loss of natural nesting and feeding sites because of coastal development. In 2014, more than 700
live sea turtles washed ashore in the Northeast. The facility at Turtle Back Zoo joins eight other facilities in the region that have the capacity to care for cold stunned or injured sea turtles. At Essex County Turtle
Back Zoo, an antiquated building was torn down and replaced with a modern 4,000-square-foot facility. The new building has five recovery tanks, life support systems, and an intensive care unit for more critically injured turtles. Zoo visitors will be able to see less critical patients while learning about the perils sea turtles face and what the public can do to help. Once the turtles have regained their health, they will be released back into their natural habitat. “Turtle Back Zoo already is a special place where children and fami-
lies can learn to appreciate animals. Introducing the Sea Turtle Recovery Center helps take our educational programming to the next level and gives us an active role in protecting and preserving wild animals,” Turtle Back Zoo Director Brint Spencer said. “Having the rehabilitation center on site fits into our mission of conservation and expands the potential for animal awareness.” The Zoo is partnering with The Sea Turtle Recovery, a non-profit organization based in Northfield. The Sea Turtle Recovery is dedicated to the rehabil-
itation, preservation and conservation of sea turtles. Its current work extends throughout the state educating the public about the ecological role of sea turtles, threats they face, and ways to protect their future. With the opening of the recovery center at Turtle Back Zoo, The Sea Turtle Recovery can begin to fulfill the other portion of its mission, which is to rehabilitate sea turtles for release back into the wild. More about the Sea Turtle Recovery can be found by visiting www.seaturtlerecovery.org.

Find Better Balance For Family Meals This Year
et a realistic resolution to take time to sit down with your family and eat balanced meals together. A few simple solutions and a dash of inspiration are all you need to set the tone for a year of health and wellness. Last year, Americans were only meeting the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate recommendations for vegetables, fruit, protein, dairy and grain consumption one week out of the entire year. While many families try to cook nutritious meals at home, a balanced plate
can be hard to achieve. Educational programs, such as NestlÈ’s Balance Your Plate, make it simple to create delicious and balanced meals by pairing frozen prepared meals and pizzas with made-fromscratch side dishes, which makes meeting the dietary guidelines a more attainable goal. Frozen entrees are a convenient starting point for a well-rounded meal. “It’s so important to me that we sit down as a family and have a nutritious meal,” said Kim Stoegbauer, creative director
and founder of The TomKat Studio, who created a few easy ways to add some special touches to your next family dinner. By pairing Stouffer’s Lasagna with Meat & Sauce, made with ingredients you would find in your own kitchen cupboard, with a homemade Panzanella Salad and Garlic Roasted Asparagus with Tomatoes and Balsamic, Stoegbauer demonstrates how easy it is to create a family-friendly meal without the hassle. “It’s a frozen entree that you can feel good about

or more than six decades, the Garden State Yacht Club, a member owned- and operated- club, in Hopatcong has offered swimming, boating, tennis, dining, dancing and more. While some members live on the Lake, the vast majority of members come from nearby towns in Essex, Morris, Sussex counties. Located on the west shore of beautiful Lake Hopatcong, the GSYC is a private club for all ages, offering a range of outdoor and social activities for family and single members with Equity and Associate Memberships. While the club has many events throughout the year, it offers a complete schedule of daily activities during the summer season, from Memorial Day to La-
bor Day. In season, the heated pool is open daily. No need to own a boat to be a member of the Club. Members with boats are more than happy to take members out on the lake. The marina hours are unlimited, with ample lighting for evening boating. A convenient tram transports from the rear of the clubhouse to lakeside. The men’s and women’s locker rooms, with showers and well-appointed dressing areas, make it easy to spend the entire day and evening at the club.

Children of all ages are permitted in the pool, which has a special, ropedoff toddler’s area, with easy step access and shallow depth. Even infants not yet toilet-trained are permitted, provided that they wear “waterproof” diapers. There is also a playground with swings and climbing apparatus. Equity Members enjoy the complete complement of club events and facilities, taking full advantage of the club’s recreational and social activities. These include the redecorated clubhouse, heated swimming pool, tennis courts, children’s playground and dock space for 55 boats. Social activities include dinner and dancing, parties, deck dining, entertainment, lectures, and trips, and other events throughout
the year. In addition to the New Year’s Eve party, they enjoy Super Bowl Sunday, a Valentine’s Dance, Halloween Party, and Theater Parties, cabarets, and comedy nights, to name a few. Associate Membership, a value-priced alternative for non-owners, offers a more limited array of activities. These members are entitled to the use of the pool, locker rooms, tennis courts, playground and optional dock slips, weekend poolside food service and Sunday musical entertainment. Summer weekends for Equity Members begin with Friday night entertainment that varies from jazz concerts to wine tastings. Saturday nights are the time for dining, dancing, theme parties, and entertainment. Sunday afternoons are a
time for live music and bar service at the pool. Holiday weekends are capped off with a fully catered picnic and barbeque. Associate members join in on the poolside fun throughout the summer. In season, activities for Equity Members are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Every Tuesday afternoon, the Ladies’ Club has luncheons
with a variety of programs, ranging from cards to book reviews. Additionally, lunch, dinner, and cocktails on the clubhouse deck, with its breath-taking, elevated views of Lake Hopatcong, are reserved for Equity Members and their guests. sweet and truly deserves to find a loving forever home. To read more about Dylan, to complete an application for him, or to see all of the adoptable pets, visit: www. ehrdogs.org or call 973664-0865.
