Centenary University Offers Alternate Spring Break For Students To Volunteer Abroad

F

By: J.L. Shively or many college students, spring break is a time to relax from their studies and maybe even celebrate the time off with a vacation abroad. This spring break, Centenary offered students a chance to take an alternative spring break from the usual vacation. Students were offered a chance, not only to travel, but to become a part of something meaningful. This type of alternative spring break is something that in the past had only been available to political and global sciences majors, according to Patrick Cassi-

M

dy who is the coordinator of International Student Services and Media at the University. A senior at the school, Roberto Romero, was the voice behind initiating the conception of centenary’s trip this past break. According to Cassidy, Romero had taken part in a similar service trip his sophomore year at the school and recalled how the volunteer experience abroad had changed him. “It changed him as a person,” explains Cassidy of Romero’s first experience on a volunteer abroad trip, “he came back a changed person and wanted to share

that passion with other students.” After approaching the International Department about his desire to create more service trips, Romero had to pitch the idea to the President of the University, David Haney. After this pitch it became a university initiative to offer more of these trips which act as both a service trip and a short study abroad. Chaperoned by Professor Angie Desai of the Political and Global Affairs Department, a trip was planned for March 11 to 15. Desai had a connection with Soles4Souls, an

organization that helps to distribute shoes in third world countries and it was

through this group that the University planned their service trip to the Dominican Republic. This trip “paved the way for future trips,” states Cassidy. The trip to the Dominican Republic was planned in a month and was funded by the university. In the future the International Department will utilize more fundraising leading up to the trip. This is the first alternative spring break trip that was open to all students and therefore there were many candidates for the trip. Cassidy explains that prospective students had to fill out an application, have a valid passport and explain to the committee why they wanted to take part in the

volunteer trip. Face to face interviews then took place with Cassidy and Study Abroad Coordinator, Patricia Mahaffey. Seven students in total were chosen for the trip and Cassidy notes how difficult it was to turn some students away. For the trip they accepted various age levels which will help to establish the ISP, or International Service Program, at Centenary University. The cost per student for this trip was $2,000 and the university put each of the seven students “on scholarship” for the trip. Soles4Souls offers both private and public trips and this trip to the Dominican Republic was a private volunteer opcontinued on page 2

Volunteer Abroad... continued from front page portunity for students. During their time on the trip students took part in various volunteer activities including distributing shoes, going to orphanages and measuring children’s feet to help size the right shoes for them. This trip had a “heavy interaction with children,” states Cassidy and “provided relief, not just with the shoes, but spiritually and mentally,” for the people the students helped. Cassidy expresses the pride he felt in the students who had gone and recalls

how excited and nervous the group was when he dropped them off at the airport and then in turn they came back changed in such a positive way, “what you feel [from this sort of trip], you can’t put into words,” Cassidy notes. Senior at Centenary, Rebecca Raymond expresses her thoughts about her experience. “Traveling to Dominican Republic with Soles4Souls was an incredible, eye opening experience that left me with so many wonderful memories. The children we interact-

ed with made me a better person, and left me with a reason to smile every day. Seeing the kids’ faces light up as we put new shoes on their feet was truly an amazing feeling. This trip changed my life in so many ways and I will forever be grateful for this experience.” After the great success of this first initiative, Centenary anticipates an expansion of this project for the future, giving students one more way to broaden their minds and expand their futures.

Historical Society Preserves Hackettstown’s Past

By Elsie Walker ome may not know that Miss America 1937 was from Hackettstown; that the first known settlement of what became Hackettstown occurred in 1754; that Hackettstown had its very own version of Molly Pitcher, a women named Mary Lackey and that she and 29 revolutionary soldiers are interred in the Old Presbyterian Burial Ground. Let it be known that the Hackettstown Historical Society Museum has 26,000 items having to do with the town’s history. Preserving the history of Hackettstown is the mission of the Hackettstown Historical Society. In addition to the museum, that is open to the public, the

society offers free monthly presentations and information to help those working on genealogies. There are 65 members in the society, with dues being $20 per year. A membership form and more information can be found on the society’s website at http://hackettstownhistory.com. “While large regional or national [museums] look at the big picture, often in a general sense, a local institution such as the Hackettstown Historical Society Museum can provide a wealth of information specific to a single locality,” said Gwen Chaar, president of the Hackettstown Historical Society. More than 500 individual donors have contributed the items now found in the

museum, she added. “These range from furniture and other large artifacts to clothing, textiles, Native American artifacts, scrapbooks, collections of postcards, church records, birth, marriage and obituary records,” she said. “There are thousands of documents contained in family and topical information files. Those interested in doing local research should be aware that they can access online the digitized versions of Hackettstown newspapers, the interment records of Union Cemetery and nearly 5,000 local obituaries.” The society’s website is hackettstownhistory.com When asked what the most significant or unusual item in the museum is,

Chaar noted that is impossible to say; however, she did give two examples of items people might find of particular interest. In 2008, a member of the historical society established contact with Betty Cooper (Moore), the hometown

girl who became Miss America in 1937. After getting the title, the citizens of Hackettstown had presented her with a watch. Cooper was inspired to donate that watch to the museum. Also, of particular interest is a tool box and tools used

by a carriage upholsterer in Hackettstown. “The manufacture of horse-drawn vehicles was a major industry here for about a century,” said Chaar. She noted that originally the items were concontinued on page 4

Pet Adoption League Helps Dogs And Cats Get Another Chance

By Elsie Walker The organization is really special,” said Kathy Hurley, member of the Pet Adoption League (PAL) in Hackettstown. “I have made lifelong friends; we all want to help animals. We help so many animals each year and that feeling is fantastic.” Since 2001, Hurley has been a member of PAL, a 501C non-profit organization run by 50 volunteers. Recently, she shared what the PAL does to help dogs and cats. Hurley said animals come to the PAL in various ways. It could be that the owner can no longer care for the animal and surrenders it to the organization. It could be the animals were found by animal control and given to the PAL In the case of cats, some are former family pets that were abandoned to fend for themselves and found through the organization’s TNR, Trap-Neuter-Release, program. Some people erroneously think that cats can live on their own by catching mice. However, not all cats know how to catch mice. Hurley shared the example of how one animal came to the organization; it is the story of

+

Oliver the cat. Oliver’s owner had to move into assisted living. Although the owner’s family had thought they had taken all the pets and gotten homes for them, Oliver was left behind in the house. He lived there for a month with no food, existing on the water in the toilet. He was found by a real estate agent who came into the home and saw the struggling cat. Oliver was given to the PAL, which saw to it that he had veterinary care. At first, he was so weak, he had to be fed by an eye-dropper. However, the story has a happy ending. The PAL helped Oliver get adopted and today he has a new home and is cherished. The PAL does not have a shelter. Cats are fostered by people who volunteer to take them into their homes until they are adopted. Some dogs are fostered, too. The PAL financially supports the fostered animals. Hurley noted that having the animals in homes means they are less stressed and being in a home environment helps prepare them for adoption. Those dogs that aren’t fostered are kenneled at All Paws Inn. PAL volunteers come to walk the dogs

and love them. Dogs and cats are social creatures that need affection. The organization keeps that in mind during the adoption process. “We make sure the people who take them can handle the expense and their needs,” said Hurley. She noted that if someone adopts and later finds that he or she can no longer take care of the animal, it must be returned to the PAL, as noted in the adoption contract. There are many dogs and cats waiting for homes, two of them are Donnie and Percy. As Hurley explained, “Donnie is a loving and funny Labrador/terrier mix.

Hurley noted that both Pet Value in Manfield and Pet Smart in Mt. Olive let the PAL have cats at their adoption centers. In addition, adopted animals can be seen at events, such as the Craft and Artisan Event on April 30th at Rutherford Hall in Allamuchy. The PAL will have a table there where it will also have a 50-50. Fundraising is important in keeping this non-profit organization going. On Fri., April 21 starting at 5:30 p.m., the PAL will have a pasta dinner at the Panther Valley Ecumenical Church at 1490 Route 517 in Alla-

muchy. On May 20, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., there will be a Fill-A-Truck fundraiser at Pasta Grill by Enzo Restaurant, in Mansfield. A perfect spring cleaning event, people can donate new or gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more. The PAL will be paid by the pound for what it collects. Also, the PAL has a monthly bake sale. The May sale will be at Sam’s club in Mt. Olive. For more information on any of the PAL fundraisers, see its site at http://palpets.org/. It is through the success of fundraisers that the PAL is able to help so many animals. One of the most recent to have its life changed by the PAL is a seven year old Jack Russell Terrier named Maggie. Maggie

came to the PAL because her former owner just couldn’t take her for walks, give her the attention she needed. Through the PAL, Maggie was adopted by a person in Vermont, who saw her listing online. He’d wanted that type of dog and it was determined he was a good match for Maggie and could give the very social dog all the exercise and attention she needed. Hurley emphasized that the PAL could not do what it does if it wasn’t for the community support. “We depend on the people in this area to be able to operate, so many people and businesses help us. The PAL is so grateful for their support!” For more information on the PAL visit www.palpets. org.

Centenary University Introduces New Recycling Initiative

lementary schoolers learn about the “Three R’s”—reduce, reuse, and recycle. At the college level, those lessons are put into action! The Evergreen Group, with the help from Tribeta, the

Biology Honor Society, and the Department of Math and Natural Sciences at Centenary University is proud to announce that the campus community is participating in Trex’s University and Community Recy-

cling Program. Founded in 1996, Trex produces environmentally responsible outdoor products in an effort to keep recyclable materials out of landfills. The guidelines of the Trex Recycling Pro-

gram challenge are simple: as a community, Centenary University needs to collect at least five hundred pounds of recyclable soft plastics by the end of the semester in order to win a high-performance composite bench to be used on campus. In order to achieve this goal by May 15, the University’s Evergreen group is enlisting help from the local community. The following items will be accepted, and encouraged, for recycling: grocery bags, bread bags, case overwrap, dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, ice bags, wood pellet bags, Ziploc and other reclosable bags, produce bags, bubble wrap, salt bags, LPDE/HPDE films, and cereal bags. All items

must be dry and clean from food residue. Members of the community can drop off eligible materials at the Taylor Memorial Library at Centenary University. The goal of the Evergreen Group is to create a sense of responsibility for resources among the community-at-large. Through promotion of awareness and education of environmental issues, this group seeks to establish Centenary University as an environmentally positive example for other colleges and universities, as well as the state of New Jersey. The students, faculty, and staff at Centenary University are embracing this recycling challenge. Associate Professor of

Dental Implants, Insurance and Payment

arely do patients come to me in need of dental implants without questions about costs, insurance and payments. This issue of Dental Digest will hopefully shed some light on these issues. Insurance: • Dental insurance does not behave like medical insurance. Dental insurance has a maximum, meaning once your insurance company pays out that amount, they will not pay any more for that benefit period, typically a calendar year. Therefore, if your plan’s maximum is $1,500 and your expected treatment is $5,000, your responsibility will be $3,500. • Implant coverage: We are finding more and more policies cover den-

tal implants, but this is a very broad and general statement. When someone undergoes dental implant treatment, there are multiple services that are performed. Coverage for each service is what you need to know. Examples of these services may include: the implant itself, an abutment, a crown, extractions, and grafting. Also, remember the point made above: once the maximum is reached, the insurance company will not pay out any additional funds. • Pre-determinations: When you ask your dentist to find out what your plan covers, you are asking for a pre-determination. However, these documents serve very little purpose, except to find out if a procedure is covered under your plan. IT

IS NOT A GUARANTEE OF PAYMENT! Just because the document states it is a covered procedure does not mean that it will be paid. There are MANY limitations and exclusions that apply. BEWARE! Investment: • Dental implants should be thought of as an investment, not an expense. You are investing your time and financial resources into your health. Understanding this concept will help you get away from the restrictive nature of insurance and guide you towards other methods of affording dental implants. Payment: In my practice, we perform many dental implant procedures for our patients and the patients of other

dentists. We recognize the financial needs of people, and we offer many opportunities for people to be able to afford the treatments they need and desire: • Cash & Check Discounts: Many people have the funds for the services they are requesting, but like all smart consumers, they look for discounts. We will offer those discounts for payments made my cash & check. • Home Equity Lines Of Credit: If you own your own home, and with interest rates so low, this is the cheapest money you can borrow. You pay yourself back as you see fit, with no (to little) penalties. • Healthcare Financing Companies: There are multiple companies that will

lend money for your healthcare needs. Some examples are CareCredit, Lending Club, and Health Credit Services. Plans offered by these companies range from interest-free loans to extended loans at higher interest rates. In summary, whether your needs are a single implant or complex care such as All-On-Four®, insurance, financing, and your thought process are all important considerations. We help our patients every day with these considerations here at Morris County Dental Associates. High School Opens Its Eye To Diversity And Celebrates Through Cultural Event

H

By Cheryl Conway ackettstown High School opened its doors to diversity last month at its first annual Multicultural Event. Held Tues., March 22, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., about 250 students, family members and the community attended the program which featured different foods, music, dance, art, hobbies and stories for many different nationalities. Held for the first time at the school, organizers hope to make this an annual tradition at HHS. Spending more than six hours a day together 180 days per year, many of these students do not realize the different cultures that surround them. The

program opened students’ eyes to all of the diversity and the tastes and sounds enjoyed by their peers. “It gave everyone an insight of how wonderfully different we all are,” says Jennifer Spuckes, student assistance counselor at HHS. “We can all celebrate those differences.” Interest in Hackettstown’s diverse population grew after the recent presidential election and was initially raised by the students, says Spuckes, with one in particular. Liv Garcia, an 11th grader who immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic just two years ago, came up with the idea of the diversity fair last year.

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

“We know we have people from different places but we don’t know anything about them,” says Spuckes. “We have a lot of different nationalities in our schools. We know there are different languages here but we don’t know anybody or any of them.” A scan was conducted and determined that “we have 32 nationalities” at HHS, she says. To learn about this diverse population, Spuckes says “We put a program together to highlight through art, through music,” native dances, Irish steppers, Mexican folkdance, Latin numbers. continued from page 16 cultures. Participants received a brochure that outlined the times and locations of the different programs held in various classrooms throughout the school. From the food to activities, Spuckes was impressed. In one room there were “board games from all around the world,” from different cultures presented by Spanish teacher Leo Teixeira. One of his hobbies is to collect games from around the world, says Spuckes. “He was teaching the kids how to play it.” Spuckes describes, “I walked around for 20 minutes; not one cell phone was being used. It was so amazing.”

The food was also a hit. “I tried different foods that I never tried before,” she says. “Kids may be willing to try new foods.” She was not alone in her enjoyment. “The students and community were very, very surprised of how diverse Hackettstown is,” says Spuckes. “It was eye opening to them; you don’t really know your neighbor. Everyone was enjoying it. Everyone thought it was a great idea…..having the students in our schools celebrate their differences. “We wanted to celebrate the differences; that was just a plus for us. It added to our community. A lot of people came out. It was such a success.”

Luck O’ The Farm At Fosterfields Living Historical Farm

uring the 19th century, Irish flocked to the United States and embarked on a new life. The American landscape became a melting pot of diverse cultures that immigrated to this country. Many Irish settled in the Morristown area and worked at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm. On Sat., April 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. visit Fosterfields Living Historical Farm in Morris Township to learn about Irish culture through dance, crafts, folklore, music and farm activities. Help with hands-on farm chores like churning

cream into butter, stacking firewood, weighing eggs, and planting seeds in flats. Hop aboard an open-air wagon ride around to tour the farm. Follow the delicious smells to the kitchen of the Farmhouse, and discover what traditional Irish foods are being prepared in the wood-burning cook stove. Take a peek and watch how an Aran sweater is knitted in the parlor. Also visit the mansion, The Willows. Lend a hand with domestic spring chores by washing laundry, beating rugs, dusting and polishing silver. Take a break from

household chores and enjoy traditional Irish music performed live by Linda Russell. Mark Sutherland, manager of Historic Sites, stated “At Luck O’ the Farm, visitors will meet re-enactors who are playing the roles of actual Irish immigrants who worked at Fosterfields. ‘Mrs. Cahill,’ the farmer’s wife, and ‘Andrew Gibbons,’ the coachman will be sharing their stories and welcoming questions about their journey to America and employment at the Farm.”. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors 64 and older, $6 for children

ages 4 - 16, and $4 for children ages 2 and 3, free for children under age 2. Friends members are half price with a current membership card. April Begins Garage Story Sunday Talks At Thomas Edison’s Glenmont Estate

S

by Michele Guttenberger pecial ranger-led talks of Thomas Edison’s Glenmont garage begin every Sunday, every two weeks, through June 25. If wondering if Thomas Edison saw the future in electric cars, questions will be quickly answered with a visit to this famous West Orange inventor’s personal garage. Many Tesla car aficionados make the pilgrimage to the first electric charging station garage. Al’s Garage, his childhood nickname, is the steampunk time capsule of the electric car’s future for American suburban living. It is story telling of interesting developments conceived in this garage that journeys from car bat-

teries to Edison’s poured concrete dream homes. Like many successful businessmen, Edison’s own domestic domain was his garage. He built it in 1908. It was a fixture that he designed and he oversaw the construction himself. Edison’s garage was his own unique creation, because it was the prototype for his new cement construction venture. This home project helped him master the technique of constructing mass-produced, poured-cement houses using iron molds. His garage and the original Yankee stadium came from the same cement poured by his own Edison Portland Cement. Today’s news is about battery operated cars and

providing a charging station for them. Edison already had this technology over some 100 years ago, in his own garage. He owned electric cars that used Edison batteries. Edison invented the alkaline storage battery in 1901 and spent years perfecting it for use in automobiles. The garage was the place to service these cars. Edison also had a gasoline filling pump in his garage for his 1922 Model T Ford – a gift from his good friend Henry Ford. The most interesting feature of Edison’s garage is the turntable to help park these vehicles. A car could rest on the concrete turntable and a hand crank rotated it to a desired parking

position. The driver never had to struggle backing the car into a spot, the turntable did the navigating. Few residential garages today can boast having this feature. Spend a Sunday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.,

or 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. learning about Thomas Edison’s poured concrete garage. There is no additional cost to visit the garage apart from the regular NPS entrance fee. To view the awesome collection of Edison’s electric and gas powered

cars a Car Pass is required. They are obtained at the Edison Factory Lab visiting center in West Orange. Visit website for more calendar info at http://www. nps.gov/edis/index.htm or call 973-736-0550 x11 for visiting information.
