Local Farmers’ Markets In Full Swing This Season
By Jane Primerano or one day every year, Chatham Borough turns from an upscale, sophisticated bastion of Morris County wealth into the epitome of small-town America. The Fishawack Festival was held Sat., June 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring vendors, not-for-profit groups, children running around in gaudy face paint, folks walking their dogs, everything that makes a tight community. This year, Fishawack coincides with opening day of
the Farmers’ Market. The market, starting its 10th season at the railroad station parking lot is run by a volunteer committee and, for the past seven years, a Youth Volunteer League. According to the borough website, in 2014, volunteers worked more than 2,000 hours keeping the market going. Volunteer John Ball is known for being on site by 5:30 a.m. each Saturday during the season to greet and assist the vendors, according to the website. Community volunteers, including teens, are on site for the duration of
the market, which runs from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. each week. Chatham’s is not the only super-organized farmers market. The Chester Farmers Market, which will run this year on Sundays from June 19 to Oct. 2 is sponsored by the Chester Rotary Club. It is held on Perry Street in the heart of the borough shopping district. Long-time Rotary member Bill McGuire is in charge. He said 13 of the 2015 vendors will be back in 2016, with a total of 16 vendors. Chester always features music. McGuire said Rotary was still working on confirming the acts. A Grateful Dead cover band often plays, but McGuire said they also look for other performers, “something quieter than a rock band so vendors can communicate with their customers.” An a capella group from West Morris Mendham High School performed a few years ago, he said.

The Hopatcong Farmers’ Market also opened Sun., June 19, in the municipal building parking lot. Hopatcong is noted for brightly colored tote bags and t-shirts, music over the municipal public address system and a nice, shady spot for visiting alpacas. Various alpaca farms rotate coming to the market. Councilwoman Marie Galate is in charge and she and other elected officials are
always there to help out. They are known for watching customers’ dogs while they shop. The market runs through Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Like many markets, Hopatcong welcomes bakers, wood carvers and other local vendors along with farmers. Another Sunday market is in Morristown on Spring Street from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. All of this year’s ven-
dors will be returning and the town is not accepting any new vendors, according to a spokeswoman at Town Hall. A former mainstay, the Netcong Farmers’ Market will not be open this year. No one at the borough hall could give an explanation. The market was at the railroad station parking lot and often featured cat adoption days from Netcong Trap, Neuter, Release.

Project Medicine Drop Box Established In Hackettstown
By Anastasia Marchese he problem of how to deal with unused prescription medicine has become more and more of an issue, especially as prescription drug abuse is on the rise. Whenever medications are used by people to whom the prescription was not made out for, or if it is being used in a way in which it was not intended, that is considered prescription drug abuse. There is a growing awareness of the problem, thanks to such organizations as the National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse and The Medicine Abuse Project (a division of The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids). According to the NCAPDA website, “There are more than 26,000 fatal drug overdoses each year in the U.S., and prescription drugs are the leading cause of them.” One of the most powerful ways to combat this trend is to help people be aware of the risks inherent in keeping prescription drugs in places where they can be accessed easily. Many people keep powerful opiate

painkillers unlocked in their medicine cabinet, never thinking that they could be taken by their children or grandchildren without their knowledge. Taking unneeded prescription drugs can not only be harmful or fatal but can also lead to drug addiction and use of illegal drugs. There is the dilemma however of what to do with one's medicine when it is no longer needed. Often patients will receive medication and then their symptoms will subside, leaving unused medication in the bottle. It is important to dispose of the medication properly however because putting it down the drain or disposing of it in the garbage can pollute the water supply. The presence of prescription medications in the water supply is a hazard for everyone. In a response to this growing hazard, New Jersey’s Attorney General instituted Project Medicine Drop Box. The program is designed to allow people a safe and anonymous way to dispose of unneeded prescription medications, including powerful opiate pain killers.

The Chief of Police sent in a letter to the state to become part of the Project Medicine Drop Box, which has become a great success. “We empty the box about twice a month, and we have averaged about 10-15lbs each time” said Tynan. Hackettstown became part of the initiative back in December of 2015. Sergeant Darren Tynan organized the program and explained how the department became aware of the need for a drop box. “We always had a huge turnout for the two yearly take-back events sponsored by the DEA” (Drug Enforcement Administration).

Trinity Church Confirms 27 Youth
O
n Sun., June 5, 27 youth were received into membership at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hackettstown. These eighth graders concluded a comprehensive, year-long preparation of membership under the leadership of a 12member adult team led by Jennifer and John Forestiere. The class included weekly small group meetings, field trips to other
churches and mission experiences. Dr. Frank L. Fowler III and Reverend Don Gebhard led the Confirmation worship service where parents, sponsors, friends and the congregation observed the confirmands professing their Christian faith. A reception was held in Starr Hall immediately after the service.
to allow access to dispose of medications in the box, no questions asked. It is suggested that the medicine either be put into a plastic baggie or left in the bottles with the labels removed. That is not required but highly suggested for personal privacy. For any questions or to dispose of medications, call 908-852-3300 for the police dispatcher.

Did You Know?
oly Thursday, which falls on the Thursday before Easter Sunday, commemorates The Last Supper of Jesus Christ. During The Last Supper, Jesus, who Christians believe is the Son of God, established the sacrament of Holy Communion. The Last Supper was the final meal Jesus enjoyed with his disciples in Jerusalem, and it was during The Last Supper when Jesus predicted one of those disciples would ultimately betray him. Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Maundy Thursday, a
reference to the religious rite of maundy, which is the washing of the feet. The Last Supper and the rite of maundy are connected because it was during The Last Supper that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. Though The Last Supper, during which Jesus gave his disciples bread, telling them it was his body, and wine, telling them it was his blood, is celebrated at every Mass as part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, Holy Thursday Mass places even greater emphasis on this significant event.

Raised In the Business, Siblings Offer Best Perks At Berk’s Furniture
By Cheryl Conway or those who don’t know, there is a furniture store in the near vicinity that not only provides quality but affordability. With roots that date back to 1943, Berk’s Furniture & Mattress in Hackettstown provides the best in brand name furniture all at a discounted price. With 22,000 square feet of space, the store features “a huge mattress department, as well as a brand new reclining gallery. Why travel east, to other parts of New Jersey, or to other states’ furniture stores if a local business can provide the same product, provide quicker delivery and all for a lower price? “I truly believe shopping local is important, says Amy Berkowitz of Green Twp., co-owner of Berk’s Furniture & Mattress along with her brother and business partner, Justin Berkowitz of Andover. “Everyone we employ is local. It goes back straight into the community. You don’t have to travel to get the same deals; they’re right here in your backyard.
Shopping at Berk’s has its perks. “We are your local discount furniture store, says Berkowitz. “We have the same thing at better pricing; 100 percent satisfaction is our goal. Formerly called HTP Clearance and Consignment in business for the past four years, the Berk’s changed its store name to Berk’s Furniture & Mattress and rebranded itself a year ago, says Berkowitz. Before it’s rebranding, the store focused mostly on consignment furniture. Now, it specializes in all brand name furniture, mattresses, recliners and even a “big area rug department, for a great value. Berkowitz says “We carry everything for immediate delivery, all brand name, at discount prices. Pieces to fill in any living room, dining room and bedroom, reclining as well, are on display at Berk’s. It specializes in “top of the line mattresses made by one of the top five biggest companies in the world, Bedding Industries of America, “all made in NJ, made to order for sale at “a fraction of the price. A main company they get their merchan-

that store is currently vacant, says Berkowitz. Through the years, the family business evolved from a hardware store with “knick knacks in the 1940’s, to appliances, carpeting, stereos and electronics. Then in 1990, it began to sell recliners at the Hackettstown Trading Post, “then became a full-fledged furniture store. Amy and Justin were employees of the Hackettstown Trading Post, working there for 15 years before and after college. “Our whole lives, we worked on and off there, says Berkowitz. “Justin started on delivery trucks when he was a freshman. I cleaned the appliances; we did the sidewalk sales. We grew up in the business, and eventually found their way back to start their own company in 2011. Four years apart in age, they both attended Pope John High School. Amy attended University of Georgia, receiving her degree in marketing and communication, and then volunteered in Africa. Justin attended Rutgers University, received a mas-
ter’s degree in environmental economics before returning to the furniture business. Like a comfortable piece of furniture, sometimes it’s just too hard to get up and walk away. “I truly, truly love this business, says Berkowitz, who spends most of her time on the sales floor. “I enjoy dealing with customers, meeting new people. I love furniture; I like the trends. I like pleasing the customer, like getting them the furniture “immediately. From the buying, to the floor planning, helping customers to delivery- Berkowitz says “I like being busy and doing different things every day. Understand The Mechanics Behind A Saltwater Filter
ummer is pool season. Come spring, homeowners prepare their backyard pools for several months of leisurely floating or engaging games of aquatic volleyball. This preparation includes uncovering the pool and rebalancing the pool’s chemical levels. Pool preparation and maintenance also includes installing a working filter. While there are many different types of pool filters and filter mediums, in recent years, saltwater filter systems have been growing in popularity. Consumers who want to upgrade to a saltwater system may be interested in learning a bit more about how such systems work. Saltwater systems are those in which chlorine is generated by the system itself. These systems do not usually require the addition of a powdered or liquid form of chlorine. Electrolysis occurs thanks to a chemical process that involves pool water passing through a salt cell and being exposed to a low-voltage current. This essentially breaks up the sodium chloride molecules (salt) into hypochlorous acid and sodium hypochlorite, which are sanitizing agents. Therefore, saltwater systems are not chlorine-free. They just
produce chlorine from a less caustic material. One of the main advantages to a saltwater system is the constant generation of free chlorine. Pool water chemistry is often broken down into FC (free chlorine) and CC (combined available chlorine). FC is yet untouched chlorine that can do its sanitizing job. CC contains chlorine and chloramines, which are produced when the chlorine comes in contact with urine, sweat and other contaminants present in the pool. CC is what contributes to the “chlorine smell” of the water. When there isn’t enough FC and there’s too much CC, pool water levels need to be returned to optimal conditions, usually through a shocking process. However, with saltwater systems, there’s always an abundance of FC being delivered into the water, making levels superchlorinated, and these systems eliminate the formation of CC. Saltwater chlorine generators require few, if any, additional chemicals, as they produce nearly neutral pH levels. This isn’t always the case with other chlorine sources, which can raise or lower pH or add to the presence of other substances, such as calcium, in the water with calcium hypochlorite sanitizers.
Because these saltwater filtration and chlorine-generating systems are relatively automatic, they also can mean less maintenance. This is handy for homeowners who go on vacation or do not want to be hassled by the daily care other systems may require. One of the disadvantages to saltwater systems is the cost, which can be prohibitive to some people. According to Thursday Pool
Manufacturing, installing the average system costs anywhere from $800 to $2,000. But some feel that cost is offset by the money saved on pool chemicals over the course of a season. Switching to a chlorine-generating saltwater filtration system can be a worthwhile investment for many pool owners.

The Benefits Of Professional Dog Groomers
rooming is something few dog owners may consider before bringing man’s best friend into their homes. But grooming is an important component of dog ownership that keeps pooches healthy and looking their best.

Some dogs are more cooperative than others during grooming sessions. Likewise, some dog owners are apprehensive about grooming their dogs, knowing that dogs can easily be hurt during the grooming process. Professional dog groomers can make grooming that much more comfortable for uneasy dogs and owners while providing a host of additional benefits. • Safety: One of the troubles owners experience when grooming dogs on their own is that dogs tend to move around a lot when getting their hair trimmed. Unlike humans who rest easy in barber or salon chairs and let their hairdressers ply their trade, dogs tend to fidget or move around during haircuts, and even the slightest movement can lead to cuts or scratches that can hurt dogs and make them even more nervous. Professional dog groomers are well-versed in cutting the hair of fidget-prone pooches and know how to calm dogs so they can enjoy pain-free haircuts. • Nail trimming: Trimming dogs’ nails serves multiple purposes. Nails that are not trimmed can break, and such breaks can make dogs more susceptible to infection. In addition, nails that are allowed to grow too long can be painful to pooches, pushing the nail into the nail bed and creating pressure on the toe joints. But trimming dogs’ nails is not as simple as trimming humans’, as dogs’ nails contain nerves and blood vessels referred to as the

“quick.” When the quick is cut, dogs can experience significant pain and even bleed. The potential for that outcome is one reason many dog owners are hesitant to trim their dogs’ nails. Professional groomers do this every day without cutting the quick. • Appearance: Human beings like to look good, and dog owners like their dogs to look good as well. Experienced professional groomers know how to style dogs’ hair in ways that make the dogs look good and feel comfortable. Different breeds of dog require different grooming supplies, and professional groomers will have all the tools necessary for particular breeds. • Long-term health: Even the most attentive dog owner may not notice certain signs that suggest a dog may be sick or developing a condition that can threaten its long-term health. Dog groomers deal with dogs every day and are in a great position to recognize any abnormalities that may be indicative of a larger problem. Owners may not notice rashes, lesions, skin discoloration or lumps right away, but dog groomers, especially those who have groomed particular dogs in the past, may be more likely to notice such irregularities. This can provide an important safety net between grooming sessions and vet visits. Dog owners want their dogs to be happy and healthy, and professional groomers can help make that happen.

Age No Hinder For Long-Time Hackettstown Man Who Returns To School
t is unknown for sure, but arguably Vince Iacampo of White Township may be the oldest graduate of any degree or certificate program at Warren County Community College. In recognition of his milestone educational effort, Iacampo was presented with the President's Inspirational Leadership Award at this year's college commencement, May 21. "Vince is an inspiration to students of all ages," said Dr. Will Austin, president of WCCC. "Vince has been a success throughout his life, as many already know. Yet strives to do more." He may be the oldest graduate from WCCC, but there is nothing old about Iacampo. When fellow students in his Physical Therapist Aide certificate program found out that Iacampo was 83, yet in terrific shape, their jaws just about hit the ground. "At the beginning of the semester the other students would run ahead and open the door for me out of respect," said Iacampo. "I soon became just Vince, another
student, and I opened my own door." WCCC is known for its welcoming atmosphere for older adults returning to college for one reason or another. Iacampo clearly fits the community college non-traditional student mold, and then some. His classmates ranged in age from about 18 to late 40s, said Iacampo, who received his certificate in December and is now doing a volunteer internship at Orthopedic Institute of New Jersey in Hackettstown. Iacampo has been an engineer nearly his whole life - and still does some work - and the past few years also has been a personal trainer and group fitness instructor for older adults at fitness centers in the area. He currently works two days a week at the Center of Healthier Living at Hackettstown Medical Center. For Iacampo, becoming a certified Physical Therapist aide was a natural progression. "My mother used to say that age is only a number," he said. "Once you stop it's hard to get going again. You have to keep moving. This keeps me moving and others moving."
Iacampo is no stranger to the community at-large, having lived in White Township for the past six years and in Hackettstown for 40 years before that. He has always been active in the community, on many different fronts, including as a longtime member of the Hackettstown Kiwanis Club. Through his community work, Iacampo has had an influence and been an inspiration to many people over the years. There are numerous examples, too many to count. One such example very recently came when Iacampo's daughter's friend, at age 53, decided to go back to school to get a degree as a registered nurse. "She said that if your dad can go back to school at his age, I can do it at my age," related Iacampo, who lives with his wife
Marie O'Hara - between them, in two marriages, they have 10 children and 17 grandchildren. "She is extremely happy with her decision." There is no question that Vince Iacampo is an inspiration - to himself, his friends, his family, and anyone who comes in contact with him.

This year, more than $15 million from the institution’s annual budget was awarded in financial aid to full-time undergraduate students. Since its inception, the Scholarship Gala has raised more than $2.7 million for the Centenary Scholarship Fund. This year’s Gold Dome Award recipient is Lewthwaite. This Award is bestowed upon individuals or organizations that advance the mission of the institution and are involved in the betterment of the community. “This year it was quite evident that the awardee would be Dr. Lewthwaite, says John Carno, vice president for College Relations at Centenary. “She has tirelessly served in various capacities at this institution and has demonstrated a strong commitment to Centenary and the community-at-large. It has been a pleasure working with her, and I look forward to continuing to with her in her new capacity as both Professor of Business and President Emeritus. Lewthwaite has served as the university’s 12th president since May 15, 2009, after serving as acting president. She is the second woman and second former faculty member to serve as president of Centenary. Since assuming the role of president, she utilized her background in academic affairs to advance the university’s mission of providing a liberal arts education with a career focus and a special emphasis on community
service. Under her leadership, she increased philanthropic support for the university. Many new programs were established during her tenure such as a degree in environmental science, a pre-veterinary program, and a master’s degree in reading and healthcare administration. During her tenure, all of the Science laboratories were transformed with new laboratories, technology, fittings and lighting. Centenary also opened a Health and Wellness Center, and created an Environmental Science Center at the Charles O. Hayford Fish Hatchery in conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The center provides students with hands-on experience in utilizing collection and analysis tools. Lewthwaite, who began her career at Centenary in 1985, also served as the chief academic officer at Centenary, playing a vital part in in the University’s long-term strategic planning. “Funds generated by the Scholarship Gala have enabled hundreds of students to afford a Centenary education and allow them to pursue their goals, says Lewthwaite. “In addition, I am so honored that I was selected to receive the Gold Dome Award this year. Anyone interested in supporting the Scholarship Gala or attending the event, call (908) 852-1400, ext. 2336, or e-mail russelle01@centenarycollege.edu for more information. Looking For A Few Good Men
en have an identity issue. Hollywood often depicts men as self-centered couch potatoes who are always looking to party, act like adolescents and play video games, while shirking all of men’s responsibilities along the way. One example of this lack of respect for fatherhood may be best illustrated by a recent survey of holiday church attendance. At the bottom of the list with Independence Day was Father’s Day. As a matter of fact, most people no longer can even say when Father’s Day is! Why has this once welcomed day to honor fathers become little more than a footnote to church attendance or the evening news? Despite the fact many have fallen for that misrepresentation, there are many good men who are great dads. They have embraced the God-given role of fatherhood and are impacting their children by helping them to build and live successful lives. Conversely, the one common denominator of many of society’s ills—pornography, human trafficking, abortion, rape, murder, alcoholism, teen suicide, and incarceration—can be traced to absentee fathers. According to statistics, 63 percent of youth suicides are from fatherless homes (US Dept. Of Health/Census) –five times the average. 90 percent of all homeless and runaway children are

from fatherless homes – 32 times the average. 85 percent of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes – 20 times the average. (Center for Disease Control). 80 percent of rapists with anger problems come from fatherless homes –14 times the average. (Justice & Behavior, Vol 14, p. 403-26). 71 percent of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes – nine times the average. (National Principals Association Report). From these statistics, it is easy to see that men who have abdicated their roles as fathers is the single greatest problem in society today. Dads need to step up to assume their rightful roles as leaders of the family. Kids are looking at them, and studying them, to see if they are really going to protect them, lead them and love them. It is time to once again make it cool to honor those men who have stood up to be great dads, grand-dads or mentors. Enter the That’s My Dad Movement. This movement is designed to honor the man, not necessarily one’s dad, who most impacted one’s life. The movement, inspired by the new book “That’s My Dad!” just released by Broadstreet Publishing, asks people young and old to visit www.ThatsMyDadMovement.com and follow four simple instructions to honor that man and to encourage others to
follow suit. It’s time to breathe new life into a once proud holiday and take part. The truth everyone wants to, or at least yearn to, stand up and shout, “That’s my dad!”

Music Director Celebrates 30 Years At Nearby Church
usic director Kevin McCann is celebrating 30 years of service at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Great Meadows. A long-time resident of Hackettstown, McCann began his ministry playing in the folk group at St. Marys' in Hackettstown; then served as children’s music director for Our Lady of the Mountain in Schooleys Mountain. He also served as director for the praise group at St. Joseph’s church in Washington. At Saints Peter And Paul he directs the youth praise group with guitars, keyboards, drums and various other instruments. He also directs two adult choirs at different masses, and has strived to add a more contemporary sound to the Catholic celebrations. He was also involved in the Billy Yank statue project in Hackettstown where the words to his original composition "Monu-
ment" are inscribed on the base of the statue, and also lends his musical talents to the Warren County Habitat For Humanity for house dedications.

People Flock To Turtle Back Zoo For Open House
By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta housands of people fled towards the gates of Turtle Back Zoo, West Orange, on Sat., June 4, for the 14th Annual Essex County Open House. There was live music, clowns, carnival games, treasure chests, giveaways, prize wheels and trivia tests, providing exciting entertainment for children as their parents gathered around more than 10 information tables that provided information about public awareness programs and services provided by Essex County. Directors and employees were on hand to answer questions. It was a great way for Essex County residents to meet the people who work for their county. The Open House included free admission to the zoo, which features: a mini-golf safari miniature golf course, sea lions, sting rays and sharks in a touch tank, a state-of-the-art reptile and education building, jaguars, snow leopards, Gibbon apes, wolves, otters, alligators, reptiles, and bears. There is also a beautiful gift shop. Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, Jr., said, “We’ve done this for fourteen years. We’re here to socialize and network for Essex County. And it’s an opportunity to see the zoo for free.” According to DiVincenzo, last year there were 16,000 people in attendance. He said, “We’re hoping to hit 20,000 today.” This event was formerly held at a small setting in the Hall
of Records, according to Anthony Puglisi, Public Information director. But the zoo can accommodate a lot more people. Puglisi said, “Not many people know about what the county government does and how it affects their life. It’s informational and we try to make it fun.” Claudette Hampton, case manager and nurse at Essex County Special Child Health Services said, “We’re here to educate the public about community health and special child services. And [for the public to] know about various resources in Essex County.” Other Essex County tables exhibits included: Paper Mill Playhouse, Family Wrap, New Jersey’s Early Intervention System, Essex County Juvenile Detention Center, New Jersey Mental Health Cares, OACANP (The Oranges ACA Navigator Project), and Essex County Vocational Technical Schools. Attendees were able to enjoy the new giraffe exhibit which just opened up, as well as the recently opened bison exhibit with a new viewing area to get up close and look into. Puglisi said, “Before there was a split rail fence. You couldn’t get close to the animals.” The prairie dog exhibit will also be upgraded. Puglisi said, “We’re changing the way the public views so you get more of a clear picture; before it was a high glass wall.” A lion exhibit is also in the works. In addition to the new animal exhibits and developments, the café expanded to two stories, which triples the capacity
Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. (second from right) and staff.
of what it was before. “It will help with crowds,” said Puglisi. “Improvements enhance the area for the public.” According to DiVincenzo, “NJ Monthly” magazine named Turtle Back Zoo the best zoo in New Jersey the last four years. And the zoo has always been awarded with a Certificate of Excellence in the last three years. For more information on Essex County, visit www.essexcountynj.com.
