By Steve Sears ount Olive High School male and female students in grades 9 through 12 don’t have far to go in seeking to engage in the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC). It’s available within the walls of their own school and was started in 2017 under Chief Master Sergeant (Robert) Bedell’s leadership.

“Chief Bedell and I really appreciate how Mount Olive and the surrounding communities have embraced the Air Force Junior ROTC program and support the cadets,” says Brian M. Dickenson, Lieutenant Colonel of the USAF, who is retired and is currently a Senior Aerospace Science instructor at the school. “We are honored for the opportunity to mentor Mount Olive’s young leaders now and in the future.”

The AFJROTC, as its mission, builds stronger, productive citizens, as well as an aerospace science program for high school youth. Dickenson explains further about the ROTC, which itself was founded in 1911 by Army Lieutenant Edgar R. Steevers, the Air Force realm commencing in 1966.

“Air Force Junior ROTC works to teach important skills and reinforce personal traits to help make students successful in life, no matter what type of career they choose following high school. These life skills are based on the Air Force core values of ‘integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do.’” Students also learn important aspects of leadership, followership, specific details adhering to personal appearance and grooming standards, proper uniform wear, and will also have the opportunity to participate in

$ Leadership Development Activities, including the possibility of earning a scholarship to the Chief of Staff of the Air Force’s Flight Academy, where they get a chance to earn their private pilot certification. “These activities,” continues Dickenson, “reinforce the lessons they will learn in the classroom and provide them an opportunity to lead and learn among their peers. These activities are our ‘hands on’ teaching tools and are a very fun and exciting way to reinforce the importance of teamwork, service, positive attitude, hard-work, and positive image. Air Force Junior ROTC is a place where a student will not only start to grasp important life lessons, but they will truly feel a sense of accomplishment, belonging, and pride that comes with teamwork and success.”

There are four different levels in the academically accredited program, and students can participate in the program for one year or to four years. The benefits are huge, both personally and professionally. “Cadets who take advantage of additional years of Air Force Junior ROTC earn extra opportunities to practice their leadership skills by leading unit operations,” states Dickenson. “All cadets will study Aerospace Science, Leadership Education, and Health and Wellness during each year of the program. The focus of each area changes from year-to-year and no cadet will repeat curriculum during their time in the Air Force Junior ROTC program. Aerospace Science studies include aviation history; science of flight; global and cultural studies; exploration of space; and management of the cadet corps.

Mount Olive High School Principal Named Director of Secondary Schools and Global Education

By Steve Sears evin Stansberry, the Principal at Mount Olive High School for 17 years, will soon depart for a new home.

Stansberry has been named Director of Secondary Schools and Global Education in the Mount Olive School district. He takes over for Gretel Perez, who departs for a new position in Plainfield.

“Dr. Perez is an outstanding educational leader who really was dedicated to promoting S.T.E.A.M. while seeking opportunities for students to apply their acquired understandings in relevant experiences,” says Stansberry regarding the outgoing Director.

Stansberry has been continuing in his role as principal while the district conducts the search process. At the same time, he is transitioning to his newly approved post, acclimating to his new responsibilities.

“The Director of Secondary Schools and Global Education,” explains Stansberry, “is responsible for curricular and instructional supports for the high school and the middle school, continued advocating for “handson, minds-on” student- centered learning experiences, facilitating vertical articulation

between the teaching staff in both buildings, providing mentoring and guidance for our high school and middle administrative teams, continuing current educational programming and monitoring the implementation of initiatives and their respective outcomes, and overseeing Mount Olive Township School District’s international education programs and partnerships.”

Even though he is excited about his new role, he admits it’s tough to leave the school and the folks he currently works and has worked so closely with. “There is no doubt that leaving this post comes with mixed emotions. I have had the privilege and honor to serve as the principal of Mount Olive High School for 17 school years. I work with an incredible instructional and support staff and our students our simply tremendous.

I will continue to serve the students and staff of the Mount Olive Township School District, just in a new capacity. I am grateful to the entire community for their support and engagement with our high school’s curricular, co-curricular, and climate and culture refinement. It has been a fascinating transformation!” He is also proud of heights

attained while he worked in the head seat.

Full Mouth Dental Implants

F

or some people, there comes a point when they say to themselves, “OK, it’s time I did something with my teeth.” Dental implants might be a solution, and full mouth dental implants or All-On-Four® might be appropriate.

Reasons for this epiphany can vary greatly, and might include: frustration with constant pain, bleeding gums, a smile that they are ashamed of, inability to chew and eat, or dentures they just can’t wear.

Dental implants can help with all of these issues. They can provide comfort, stability, increased chewing efficiency, and improved self-esteem. Overall health improvement is another result reported by people soon after implant treatment is completed.

Dental implant treatment options can vary greatly: 2 to 6 implants can be placed to stabilize a denture, individual implants can be placed to replace missing teeth, or 4 to 6 implants can be utilized to provide permanent teeth.

This last option is called All-On-Four®, or full mouth dental implants. This option is appropriate when all remaining teeth require removal, but it is very important to understand this is not everyone’s situation. Oftentimes, people arrive to my office thinking this is what they require, and they are pleasantly surprised when I can present multiple options to them, and some of these options help them to keep their teeth.

In the All-On-Four® option, any remaining teeth are removed, 4 to 6 implants are placed, and teeth are attached to the implants. These 3 steps are typically performed in

one appointment, so the patient is able to leave the dental office with teeth the same day. It should be noted that these are temporary teeth: the final teeth will be fabricated approximately 4 to 6 months later.

All-On-Four® has revolutionized implant dentistry. Although more expensive than dentures, it is less expensive than traditional full-mouth implant reconstruction. Costly and time-consuming grafting can oftentimes be avoided, too. Furthermore, pain levels are significantly decreased.

People sometimes think they are not implant candidates because of their age. This is a misconception. In fact, as a person ages, it becomes more important to be able to eat so that proper nutritional needs are met. Dentures do not provide proper biting force to chew food, plus they weaken the jaw. Implants improve chewing ability, and strengthen the jaw as compared to dentures. A

person’s health is a key factor when considering implants, not age.

Who should perform dental implant procedures? Only well-qualified dentists who have had extensive training in implant dentistry. Some patients think they have to see an oral surgeon or periodontist (gum specialist). This is not true. It is not so important as to what type of dentist places them, but rather how much training and experience they have. Also, don’t forget that there is a second part to the implant once it is placed: one or more teeth have to be placed on top of the implant. If an implant is placed while ignoring this second part of the treatment, disastrous results may follow. One reason many people seek out my office is because we perform both phases of implant dentistry (placement AND restoration) in the same location: patients do not have to see multiple doctors in multiple offices.

In Defense of Iowa

e have reached that time in every presidential nominating year when distinguished, national opinion leaders beat up on Iowa and that admirable state’s influential role in determining the two major parties’ eventual presidential nominees and, therefore, the next president. The USA Today editorial board indicts Iowa for being “one of the least ethnically diverse states in the country” and its status as the first-in-the-nation presidential test every four years as “ un-American,” while Paul Waldman writes in The Washington Post that the Iowa caucuses “are a crime against democracy.”

It is time someone stood up for Iowa and Iowans. It’s true that Iowa is neither very representative of the entire nation nor very average. Scholarly studies have ranked Iowa as tied for first place in percentage of the adult population who are high school graduates. Iowans are fourth highest in access to health care (more “representative” Florida and Texas rank 46th and 47th respectively in citizens’ access to health care); first in broadband access; and third highest in public libraries per capita. True, the Hawkeye State leads the nation in production of corn, soybeans and pork, but Iowans are at the top of the nation in literacy, and the state has the U.S.’s 14th lowest murder rate.

But Iowa remains a small, rural state in the middle of the country. How representative can its voters be of the nation at large? The answer: amazingly so. In 1992, Democrat Bill Clinton won 43% of the national vote and the White House; in Iowa, Clinton won 43% of the vote. In 1996, winner Clinton carried 49% of the national vote and 50% of the Iowa vote.

In 2000, Democrat Al Gore won the national vote by one-half of 1% and Iowa by one-third of 1%. Republican George

Mark Shields W Bush won reelection in 2004 with 51% of the national vote and 50% in Iowa.

Democrat Barack Obama, in 2008, got 53% of the national vote and 54% of Iowans. In 2012, Obama was reelected nationally by a margin of 4% and in Iowa by 5%. In 2016, the exception: Donald Trump, who lost the national vote by 2% to Hillary Clinton, carried Iowa by a solid 10%.

Yes, Iowa’s 2008 Democratic caucuses were 93% white, and those mid-American Caucasians made history by giving legitimacy and momentum to a freshman senator from Illinois, Barack Obama. In Iowa, the African American underdog won an upset victory over the heavily favored former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and was propelled to the top of the national polls.

In fact, the rest of us owe Iowa our thanks. Iowans faithfully and earnestly fulfill their civil responsibilities by showing up at campaign town halls and listening and questioning the men and women who seek the White House.

n November, I was banned in Boston after speech-squelchers on the left and right forced the cancellation of my lecture at Bentley University, a small private institution. The grassroots activists who had invited me were rejected by every major event venue in the nation’s purported Cradle of Liberty. The tail-tuckers cited security concerns or jacked up their rental fees to make it prohibitively expensive to gather peacefully to discuss -- gasp! -- ideas.

Lou Murray of Bostonians Against Sanctuary Cities and Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies heroically persisted, pulling together a great event at a private home attended by 100 patriots who risked their privacy, friendships and even their jobs to listen to -- gasp! -- ideas.

Soon after, a group of conservative students at the University of Maine, a publicly funded school, invited me to bring my nationalist message about who’s funding the destruction of America to their campus. This prompted the College Republicans’ faculty adviser, political science professor Amy Fried, to resign in protest. That led to the de-chartering of the CR group. Why? Because I refused to disavow other young students who have asked trenchant, pesky questions at Young America’s Foundation and Turning Point USA lectures about the GOP elites’ support of wage-suppressing, job-outsourcing, Democrat voter-importing policies that put American students, workers and families last.

Many of those students follow a 21-year-old nationalist named Nick Fuentes, who hosts a program (for now) on YouTube and DLive in his basement called “America First.” Because I re-

Yesterday, I learned from Portland Sheraton at Sable Oaks general manager Ed Palmer and others that at least one University of Maine official -- along with dozens of others cancel culture jihadists galvanized on social media by an anonymous Twitter account called “Support Maine’s Future” -- had called to complain about the students and me after they posted an event notice last Friday. I reached out to top administrators, who did not respond by my filing deadline.

We are hearing reports that administrators from the University of Maine pressured a private Maine hotel to cancel an appearance by conservative speaker Michelle Malkin. If true, this is a disturbing

development from Maine’s public, landgrant university,” she blasted. “All universities -- but especially those that receive public funds -- have an obligation to foster free speech and free inquiry. I support President Trump’s recent executive order on campus free speech. ... I am disturbed that academic elites would interfere to block this speech. For those who disagree with Malkin’s views, the answer is debate and discourse, not censorship.”

In the caucus, firefighters join shoulder-to-shoulder with nurses, teachers, retirees, students and small businesswomen in truly vibrant democracy. Here in Iowa, because Iowans give them a full and fair chance, the underfinanced, under-

dog candidate has a real chance. It was in Iowa that Jimmy Carter broke through and where George H.W. Bush’s upset win would lead to his being chosen vice president.

Mt. Olive Township: Think Spring! Garden Plots Available at the Community Garden at South Branch Preserve

N

ow entering its seventh year of operation, the Community Garden at South Branch Preserve has plots availabe for the 2020 season, which runs from April 1st through November 30th.

An informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 19th at 7 p.m at the Mt. Olive Township public library, 202 Flanders-Drakestown Rd, Flanders, NJ 07836.

Free vegetable seeds will be available to interested gardeners, and sign ups for plots may be completed at this time.

“The camaraderie and friendships among the gardeners has been amazing, and the gardeners donated over 350 lbs of excess produce in 2019,” said Barbara McCloskey, the Garden Manager and Membership & Outreach Manager for the Land Conservancy.

The annual membership rate for Mt. Olive Township residents and/or members of The Land Conservancy is $35 per 10’ x10’ plot and $45 for non- residents. There is a one-time irrigation fee of $30 for each plot.

The Community Garden is located at the intersection of Wolfe Road and Route 46 West. It is part of South Branch Preserve,

which totals over 200 acres in this location.

Preserved by The Land Conservancy and its partners (including Mt. Olive Township) this land was purchased to protect the headwaters of the South Branch of the Raritan River, a drinking water supply source for over 1.5 million New Jersey residents.

The garden is surrounded by fencing, to keep out deer and rodents, including rabbits and groundhogs. A shed is located onsite, which houses some gardening supplies. Gardeners are encouraged to bring their own gardening tools. Water is provided by The Land Conservancy by individual spigots and hoses throughout the garden.

Only organic gardening practices are allowed at the Preserve.

The Arc of Warren County is Awarded a $20,000 Grant from The John A. & Margaret Post Foundation

he Arc of Warren County has been awarded a $20,000 grant from The John A. & Margaret Post Foundation for the cost of power generators for two of the organization’s group homes in Warren County.

“This grant from The John and Margaret Post Foundation makes a strong positive impact on the Agency and the individuals who we serve,” says John Whitehead, CEO of The Arc of Warren County. “This grant will enable The Arc of Warren County to maintain consistency in the lives of individuals who we serve when there is a power outage without disruption.

Relocation, even for a short period of time as a result of loss of power, can be very frightening to some of our residents who thrive best with routine. It can also cost the Agency in additional funds for food, transportation and salaries.”

The project will start immediately and will be complet-

ed within four months. On average, The Agency needs to relocate residents every winter on an average of one to three times as snowstorms routinely cause a loss of power in the rural areas of Warren County. The State of New Jersey mandates that relocation is necessary in extreme cold or hot temperatures, so this will sometimes cause travel for the most vulnerable of our residents in treacherous weather and road conditions causing serious hardship for the Agency. As a result of the limited hotel options in the immediate area sometimes staff and residents need to take up temporary occupancy up to 20-30 miles away from their homes.

“This grant award is one that provides peace of mind when the areas in Alpha and Belvidere are affected by outages where these two group homes are located,” says John Whitehead. “The Arc of Warren County community, includ-

ing myself, is extremely grateful that The John & Margaret Post Foundation afforded us this beneficial opportunity.”

Hackettstown Author Took Gutsy Trail to Success

By Steve Sears aryann McFadden refused to give up on her dream to become a published author.

“Let’s face it,” she says, “it’s much easier to give up than it is to push on in the face of rejection and obstacle. I think this is a two-pronged effort. You have to put the hard work into your craft, and it is hard. You can have a bit of a gift for writing, but you need to have the discipline to put the words on pages, to push through when you’re not feeling it, and to critique. And when you feel the work is good enough, you have to be your own best advocate and make believe this is your baby and you would do anything for it.”

McFadden (www.maryannmcfadden.com) has seen four books through to publication: The Richest Season (2008), So Happy Together (2010), The Book Lover (2012), and her latest, The Cemetery Keeper’s Wife, set in Hackettstown at Centenary University, in 2018. She is currently at work on a fifth novel and screenplay. Stay tuned.

She talks about The Cemetery Keeper’s Wife – why the story interested her and why she had to write it. “My family moved to Hackettstown in 1964 from Brooklyn, New York. I was just 10 years old. One day when I was out exploring. I found myself on the banks of the Musconetcong River and saw that little wooden bridge and decided to cross it. I thought I was going to a park. I did not realize it was the cemetery.” She wandered around and eventually found herself at the highest point, standing in front

of an incredible monument. “I read the words, ‘she died in defense of her honor…erected by an appreciative public’ and I had no idea what it meant.” She had found the gravesite of Tillie Smith, an 1886 murder victim whose body had been left in a field behind then Centenary College. Throughout her life there were many coincidences with Tillie Smith and her story. McFadden, who also works as a real estate agent, in 1990 sold the home of James Titus, the college maintenance man accused of the murder, which further intrigued McFadden. “Many of these coincidences are in the story,” she adds.

McFadden has been writing since she was a little girl.

“In high school it became more serious and I began to dabble in poetry, short stories, essays,” she says. “When I was in college, I began writing for the local Hackettstown Gazette and also doing photography in black-and-white and learning how to develop my own photos in the darkroom. I actually continued writing for newspapers and magazines after college. I taught at Centenary in their journalism department and I even did corporate writing for Crayola.” She then became a realtor and didn’t write for 10 years until penning what she calls an “absolutely wretched” romance novel. That books whereabouts are now unknown to her, but it – and a Creative Writing course at William Paterson University where she started to write a new short story that became her eventual thesis project for her Masters in English and first published continued on page 12

United States Power Squadron Offers State Boating Safety Course

N

orthern New Jersey Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS) and now America’s Boating Club, will offer the New Jersey State Police, Marine Services Bureau approved Boating Safety Course at James Caldwell High School from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. beginning on Tuesday, March 10, 2020.

The course taught by certified instructors licensed by the State of NJ, and which meets all the mandatory requirements necessary for obtaining your New Jersey Boat Safety Certificate, will run every Tuesday evening for seven weeks which includes a night for review, and a night for the required state examination. The cost of the course is $90.00.

Legislation in the state of New Jersey was passed a number of years ago requiring all boaters, 16 years of age or older, operating a power driven vessel including a personal watercraft (PWC), to complete a boating safety course. The legislation re-

quires a minimum of eight hours of instruction with at least six hours of in-classroom study, homework, and a proctored examination. Those successfully completing the course will receive a New Jersey Marine State Police certificate that must be in the operator’s possession when on the waters of the state. Failure to exhibit the certificate is presumptive evidence that the person has not completed an approved boating safety course and is subject to a fine. One must be at least 12 years of age to attend the course.

McFadden reflects on the gutsy trail she’s taken. “Sometimes I look back and I’m amazed at the chutzpah I had sometimes. Walking into a bookstore and asking them to read my originally self-published first novel and getting the eye rolls and the sighs from book sellers who figured it wasn’t good because I couldn’t get it published, that took some nerve. But when they’d called me and told me how much they loved it; it was all worth it. I originally self-published my book because it was my intent to prove it was good enough, that I

had an audience, and that an agent would take me on and sell it to a traditional publisher.” It almost didn’t happen, the manuscript sitting in her closet for a long time.

“But I believed in that book! And it went on to be translated into multiple languages, to sit on the front tables of Barnes & Noble, to become a target breakout novel -- an American Bookseller Association ‘must read.’”

“And so, my career as a ‘real’ author began! I have won awards and get letters from readers all over the world who love my stories, my characters, and my writing.

I Remember Dad: Dad’s Love for the Old Morris Canal

M

By Richard Mabey Jr. y father had a great love for the history of the old Morris Canal. After all, his father, Watson Mabey, worked as an Engineer on Incline Plane Ten East in Lincoln Park.

And, his grandfather, William Mabey, once owned and operated an icehouse along the banks of the canal. The Morris Canal was a page of New Jersey history that was near and dear to his heart.

For over 20 years, my Dad served as the Vice President of the Lincoln Park Historical Society. And, in that time, Dad must have given well over a hundred educational talks on the old Morris Canal. Most of the talks that Dad gave, were at the Lincoln Park Museum. One of Dad’s favorite subjects, for his many talks, was explaining the intricate mechanics of how an incline

Mount Olive School District Named to AP Honor Roll

he Mount Olive School District was named again to the AP Honor Roll by the College Board. The district is one of only three districts in Morris County, 20 in New Jersey, and 250 in the U.S. to be so honored. The AP Honor Roll distinction recognizes the district’s efforts in increasing the number of students from underrepresented demographics who take AP courses, while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students passing the exams.

This is the third consecutive year in which the district has earned a place on the honor roll.

A look at the AP data reveals just how far Mount Olive High School has evolved.

AP courses were added gradually, and students responded by not only sitting for the courses but also taking the year-end exams.

From 2004 to 2019, the number of AP exams administered grew from just 85 to 667 – an increase of nearly 700%. The passing rate has increased as well. The addition of three AP courses for the 2019-2020 school year, (Human Geography, Computer Science Principles, and Psychology), brings the total number of AP offerings at the high school to 28.

The Mount Olive Board of Education has made concerted efforts to encourage students to challenge themselves with high-level courses. Last year, for example, an AP incentive program was implemented so that the cost of the AP exams would not dissuade students from enrolling in AP courses. John Mania: The City Kid Who Now Embraces Mount Olive

By Steve Sears ount Olive Township Councilman John Mania, entering his twelfth year as a council member, is an affable guy, always ready with friendly conversation.

One interesting tidbit from a recent discussion was his never envisioning as a young boy he’d one day be living in the Budd Lake section of Mount Olive.

There’s a story to this – a great one, and he’s ready to tell it. His Dad raised and raced pigeons, and it was through this unique lifestyle avenue that he was introduced to the area he now calls home. “In fact,” he states emphatically with a chuckle, “what was amazing was to train the pigeons, he used to take them from Paterson to Budd Lake. He trained them for the races. I used to say to my Dad, ‘Who would ever want to live here?!’” It was different compared to the crowded, busy streets of his childhood neighborhood. “It wasn’t built up, there was a lot of farmland. To be honest with you, I never knew what a town looked like until I came to Budd Lake. I was a city guy.”

The above being said, he’s been living in Mount Olive for over 50 years.

Mania, 84, grew up in Paterson, and attended Saint Anthony’s Parochial School for elementary and middle school education, and then Passaic County Vocational and Technical School for high school.

He was one of five children -- three brothers and two sisters -- growing up in a locale that was one of New Jersey’s top cities for commerce and history. Literature was also abundant, and so was comedy – in a very big way. Think Abbott & Costello, with Lou Costello being born and raised as well in Paterson. “Abbott & Costello, absolutely,” says Mania with excitement, he often back then in company albeit at a distance with the slapstick duo. “He (Costello) used to come to our church. Lou Costello, Bud Abbott, and Kate Smith. They used to come to Mass at Saint Anthony’s on

Beech Street in Paterson. I was an altar boy, so I used to serve Mass.”

Roman Catholicism and, primarily, serving others, obviously, was imbedded in Mania at a young age. It was important to him then, and it is important to him now, he serving for 15 years as a Eucharistic Minister for Holy Communion at Saint Jude Parish in Mount Olive. “It’s very important. I’m a member of the Knights of Columbus – I’m a former Grand Knight – and the good that the Knights do, which is a Catholic organization, the good they do for people in need impresses me. It’s so important to me, and to the people that are less fortunate than most of us that are in dire need of just clothing – forget about food, clothing!

Mania, who is up for reelection in 2021, didn’t run for the township council initially.

It was thrust upon him, courtesy of his diligence. He details one example. “Many years ago, there was a proposal to have Palisades (Amusement) Park to relocate in Mount Olive, where the foreign trade zone (International Trade Zone) is located now. Palisades Park was coming.” Mania, then a new resident of Mount Olive, didn’t think the park and the township would be a good fit. “That was my personal opinion.” He attended a council meeting and raised his hand during the public portion of the forum, seeking to be heard, eventually stating his objection to the project after council members stated the benefits of it. “I got up and said, ‘I come from the city of Paterson, and I don’t think that Palisades is the right thing for Mount Olive.’ I then said, ‘If you really feel strongly about this, I think you should put it on the ballot, and let the people of Mount Olive decide whether they want an amusement park or not.’” He was told by the elected officials that they themselves would make the decision, not the people.

continued from page 15 deter him. He went home and, the more he thought about it, he figured that if he didn’t do something about it, what good was it? He and a few others sprang into action, forming a Citizens Alert Committee (CAC), their purpose to fight the proposal. “Now, to get it on the ballot, you had to get 25% of the registered voters. So, we had to go out and get signatures to get it on the ballot,” he explains. The plan bore success; onto the ballot it went. “I’ll be honest with you, then coming from the city of Paterson, I was a Democrat; I wasn’t a Republican then. But before that, I went from town to town where Palisades was located, and talked to the police chiefs, and the crime (they said) was unbelievable.

They said, ‘We’re so happy to get rid of Palisades out of here.’” Mania now had an extra leg and maybe more leverage when learning that all the park rides were not permanent structures, therefore not taxable. “All Mount Olive would’ve gained, had the park been built, was taxes on the land, not any of the rides. And there we had 300 prime acres bordered by Routes 46, 206, and 80, and not a ratable.”

Mania provided the council with the information, and the proposal was a memory.

Impressed with his initiative, then-Mayor Blaine Rowland in 2009 appointed Mania to the Township Council, and from there he

became President of the Democratic organization in Mount Olive. “Normally in Morris County,” Mania says, “Democrats don’t get elected. It’s a Republican county. I helped three Democrats get elected to the town council.”

Mania sings the praises of the current members. Now serving the township for over 10 years as a Republican, he enjoys his relationship with other council members, no matter their party affiliation. “We have working members, we all work together, we may not agree all the time, but we shake hands after it is all over.” He continues, “I’m proud to be a resident of Mount Olive.” He lauds Mayor Rob Greenbaum. “Our Mayor has done a tremendous job. We have a good working council. We’ve got a nice town here to live in, and good support.” Mania saw more proof-positive evidence of this in an important realm during a recent Sunday afternoon visit to Mount Olive High School: the progression of education on the local level. “They had a Robotics event going on, and I went through the whole high school, and I am so impressed with the opportunities the students have to feel free as to what they want to do in life.”

“The opportunity is there. Our tax dollars are well spent.”

He then sums up his (and many others’) feelings regarding the township. “It’s be-

come a great town to live in, to raise a family, people help each other – I’m just thrilled to be a resident of Mount Olive, and to be a member of the Town Council, and the Planning Board for many years.” Mania, a former member and President of the Mount Olive Township Library Board of Trustees, as well as former Vice-Chairman of the Board of Adjustment, presently serves as Council Liaison to the Planning Board.

Mania (who currently works in sales for Sparta Redi-mix of Sparta, New Jersey) and his wife, Lillian, have been married for 30+ years, and he is a Dad to three sons and two

stepdaughters: John, Michael, Robert, Lori, and Karen. “All my sons graduated from Mount Olive (High School), and they’ve all done well for themselves,” he says proudly.

And when suggested that for it’s also a joy to raise daughters, he wholeheartedly agrees.

“Absolutely.”

John Mania once called a strong working community his backyard, and he now represents one many years later which has the same attributes. “As I said, I’m a proud resident of Mount Olive, a working community, and we work together and help each other.”

Waterloo Village Worth a Visit - For Many Reasons

By Steve Sears ocated beside the Morris Canal and Musconetcong River in Byram Township, Waterloo Village Historic Site is a restored canal town located in Allamuchy Mountain State Park.

Waterloo Village is a cornucopia of many different things. Yes, the 70-acre site, which was founded in 1820 and was named to both the National and New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1977, has a lot of history. But it’s much more than that.

The coldest day of the young new year has arrived. So frigid is the air, in fact, that the water in the canal behind old Smith’s Store is partly frozen, while behind it the waters of the Musconetcong flow rapidly, a tiny waterfall sending gushing water downward to the lower level with continuous, resounding thuds.

Except for the occasional car or SUV entering the historic village via Waterloo Valley Road, the before-mentioned rapids are the only noise heard, it echoing throughout the park.

“Waterloo Village Historic Site is a popular school field trip destination,” says Andrea Proctor, whose official title is Resource Interpretive Specialist 2, Historic Resources, Waterloo Village Historic Site, New Jersey State Park Service. She focuses much on education, and there’s a lot here to learn about. “Teachers can choose to reserve guided programs of either the Morris Canal Village of Waterloo or Winakung, the re-created Lenape Village. This program allows groups to guide themselves through the site for the day and customize the visit to their liking.”

A brief history. The original owners of the property, the Smith family, first purchased land in the Musconetcong Valley in the early 1800s. “They were farming the area we know today as Waterloo Village,” says Proctor. As you look around at the area, you can close your eyes and envision farming activity on the open fields two centuries ago as boats pulled halted in the canal area. It was an advantageous location, about halfway along the 100-mile canal, which opened in 1831 and stretched across the state from Jersey City to Phillipsburg. Waterloo Village had at that time what was necessary for a canal village operation and was the perfect rest stop during the trip along the waterway.

Canal traffic peaked at the end of the 1860s, when the nearby Sussex Branch and Morris and Essex Lines of the nearby Lackawanna Railroads, were found to be faster and, especially in the winter, easier than the frozen canal waters to travel in. Waterloo then saw a decline, and by the Great Depression, the property was abandoned. It was slightly inhabited in the 1940s and 1950s, and in the 1960s had a rebirth. By the 1980s, Waterloo had become a performing arts venue (the tent for this has since been closed), and in 2014, through an agreement with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Division

Walking along Waterloo Valley Road from the parking area, you come upon the Waterloo Village United Methodist Church. A privately-owned-church, it has a tiny congregation that continues worship to this day. From the road it is a somewhat majestic, it sitting prominently, peering out over the Musconetcong, almost as if to say, “I mean so

much to this area and village.” It does. Peter Smith owned the general store, and he donated $500 and land for a church to be built and cemetery to adjoin it. The total cost to build the church was $2,993.22, and in that price was included an 800-pound bell. The church cornerstone was set on August 9, 1859, the building dedicated on February 9, 1860, although the first service held was on December continued on page 20

After climbing the front steps and being at ground level with the church, a walk around the right side will lead you to the General’s burial spot.

“There are approximately 25 buildings, not including Native American homes, smaller structures and outbuildings,” says Proctor of the property.

“In the Morris Canal Village of Waterloo there are 19 buildings including a church, store, blacksmith, gristmill, sawmill, Hotel Tavern, 9 residential buildings of varied sizes and architectural styles and 4 carriage houses. There is a log cabin built circa 1790 that was moved to the site in 1980 from the Branchville area. There is also a horse stable and several outbuildings near the cabin.

Additionally, there is a large barn near the picnic area, which is used as a facility support space for programming, staff training, meetings, and indoor lunches for field trips during inclement weather. There is a large comfort station with approximately 10 stalls on

Proctor describes much activity above, but Waterloo Village is also about peace and basking in nature, and a stroll anywhere in the village opens one to serenity in spots. It all starts with the drive to the location along Route 604, trees on your right, while forest and ponds of the Waterloo Lakes area populate the area to the left. It all builds the anticipation of where you are headed. Easily accessible from Route 46, but even better from Routes 80 and 206, Waterloo is located near-

Mount Olive Lions Still Living on Purpose and with Purpose after 50 Years

By Jillian Risberg or 50 years the Mount Olive Lions Club has been a force for good right here at home with their free eye screenings for the township’s school children, scholarship funds, senior support and endless others have benefited from their altruism.

“Ten to 15 percent have serious eye problems that most parents were not even aware of,” says Club President Joe Gentile, a member for 35 years.

According to Gentile, when you take your child to the pediatrician, they only perform a simple eye exam.

“You’d be surprised how many children as early as first grade had a wandering eye, poor vision or even worse — that we caught because of this eye screening and they’re able to get treated,” says the Club President.

For the past 20 years, more than 18,000 children have been screened courtesy of Lion member and licensed optician Dr. Jeanine Labrada, who connects other Lions with the nurses at each one of the schools to assist.

“We have Mountain View, Tinc Road School, Sandshore and Chester Stephens School (CMS),” Gentile says. “Those four grammar schools, we’re there every year around October/November and Dr. Labrada brings her equipment.”

The Lions Club is an international non-political service organization founded in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois by insurance salesman, Melvin Jones.

According to the Club President, Jones had a successful career when he and quite a few others got together with

the purpose of giving back to the community and to those who needed financial help.

“They really didn’t have a goal at the time of what they were all about until Hellen Keller approached them at one of their conventions (1925),” Gentile says.

In the 1920s, eye diseases leading to blindness were rampant so the author and activist challenged the Lions to become “Knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.” continued on page 27

Globally, the Lions Club serves over 200 countries and geographic areas. Their 48,000 clubs and more than 1.4 million members are on the frontlines — helping humanity and improving communities.

Since its inception, Lions Clubs International segregated women to an auxiliary called the Lionesses. They eventually did away with the 1917 ideals and began admitting women in 1987. The organization now has 135,000 female members.

“About 25 percent of our members are females,” Gentile says. “And growing, every year we have more and more.”

According to the Club President, all the money they accrue stays in the town and the area.

“We do not collect any money through our fundraisers that is used for any club dues, dinners or anything,” he says. “The money we take in goes out 100 percent to the different activities.”

And they don’t have to pay rent or utilities on any building or hall.

The Club President says anyone who has any interest in joining can definitely approach them. The Club has been in existence since February 1969.

“I did coaching and assistant coaching when my children were younger in Mount Olive in soccer, softball and baseball,” Gentile says. “When they got older and didn’t really need me anymore, I had this void in my life — and I wanted to give back.”

He met some folks who were in a Lions Club and they asked if he was interested and he said he was.

And Drew Van Dam joined by invitation of fellow Lion member, Ralph DeVito.

“He felt after knowing me for several months that I may be a nice addition to the club,” says Van Dam, a member since January 2000. “We had moved to Mount Olive in Sept 1999 next door to I love Subs. We hit it off and Ralph (Subs owner) asked me if I might like to join and serve through the Lions Club.”

He decided after meeting the other members to join, with Gentile also making that decision and they both experienced firsthand how much their service is needed.

According to Van Dam, over the past 20 years he’s become heavily involved with serving the community with local, state and international projects.

They recently donated 20 $50 Walmart cards before Christmas to Mount Olive for them to give out to the children in town that needed the money in order to buy something for Christmas.

“We do this every year; we’ll do $2,000 worth of cards either at Thanksgiving or Christmas, depending on what they need,” says the Club President.

They’ve provided college/or vocational training scholarships for Mount Olive High School graduate, eyeglasses for local needy students, Eagle Scout recognition and donated a low vision reading machine to Mount Olive Manor senior citizens.

The Lions often get approached by the town or the Police Department or the Board of Health about a problem or issue.

“They’ll ask if there’s any way we can do it and we will tell them we’ll make a commitment and how much money we have to contribute to the cause,” Gentile says.

One of those causes is providing first bullet proof vests for the Mount Olive Police.

“It now costs almost $1,000 per vest and over our 50 years experience, we’ve donated to buy over 70 police vests,” Gentile says. “The second vest is paid for by the FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) or the PBA (Policemen’s Benevolent Association).”

The Club President says it gives him and all the Lions

members a sense of accomplishment knowing they’ve helped out a fellow resident.

“We’ve paid for eyeglasses, we’ve paid for eye exams, we’ve paid for eye operations where somebody could not afford it and needed it,” he says. “We were able to raise some of the money or all of the money to do what had to be done.”

Van Dam has committed himself to service by holding all

the officers positions, as well as being a trustee on the New Jersey Lions Charitable Foundation and currently holding the treasurer position.

“So it’s a personal satisfaction that you get — and when people donate, a lot of them say, ‘my father, my uncle, so and so I know was in the Lions Club or was helped by the Lions Club; that’s a good feeling.” continued on page 30

continued from page 29 According to Gentile, for years they have been a proud part of Rockaway’s Camp Marcella, a residential summer campground designed for children and teens with blindness, visual-impairments and special needs.

“Camp Marcella is funded and sponsored by over 25/30 Lions Clubs throughout New Jersey, from Bergen County, all the way out towards the Delaware Water Gap,” he says.

“Those are the kinds of things that have been done and continue to be done.”

The camp is a State Project of New Jersey Lions Multiple District-16.

“They have the chance to go to camp for a whole week free of charge,” Gentile says. “It’s a sleepover camp with bathrooms and beds — we have a nurses station; it has a full lunchroom/cafeteria where they’ll cook meals for the kids. And for recreation, in the last 10 years we installed a brand new in-ground pool which has a ramp and lift for those in a wheelchair.”

The Club President says there’s also a baseball field and a playground, two lanes of a bowling alley that the blind and visually impaired children can actually bowl, a Lions arts and crafts building they keep every year and supply the camp with whatever they need.

For all the good they do and the countless people they help, the Mount Olive Lions Club is hurting for members.

“It’s hard to get people to volunteer anymore,” Gentile says. “It’s a sign of the times — nowadays people are having children at an older age because of school, finances and everything else.”

Van Dam echoes that sentiment, saying the club does many wonderful projects, but getting new members is a

major struggle as people cue away from volunteering to serve.

Often both husband and wife are working, there are many single parent families, and the family values and traditions are not what they were decades ago.

“In terms of donating time, they say, ‘I would love to but I work and when I don’t work I’m watching the children and the grandchildren,” the Club President says. “This generation, the Baby Boomers — we’re also taking care of our parents,” According to Gentile, most of the clubs in the region; including the Rotary, Kiwanis and Elks are all good clubs.

“We all do good things for the area we’re in and we’re all pretty much on the same level that we just cannot get enough members,” he says. “And try to get some younger members — the average age in our club is probably

60-years-old.”

The Club President says that as they get older, retire, move down south, pass away unfortunately, they are losing members at a faster pace than gaining them but they are never going to stop trying.

“We do try to get the word out and approach friends, neighbors, anyone who we feel would be a good fit,” Gentile says. “We’ve had as many as 30 members in good times, some years we got down to only like 12 members.

We’re back up to 22, so it does fluctuate.”

For the Club President and Van Dam, being a Lion is very rewarding.

“I am always looking how to add projects and new members,” says Van Dam. “No Lion relieves any remuneration, only self satisfaction of helping others less fortunate than me.”

Fiery Beef Harissa Polpettes with Cooling Milk Goat Cheese Sauce Recipe courtesy of chef Elise Wiggins Yield: 12 polpettes Polpettes: 1 dry ancho chile 2 dry guajillo chiles 10 dry arbol chiles 2 dry cayenne chiles hot water 1 tablespoon cumin seeds 1 tablespoon coriander seeds 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/4 cup Shamrock Farms Heavy Cream 1 lemon, zest only, finely chopped 2 teaspoons hot smoked paprika 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 pound ground beef Dipping Sauce:

1 cup Shamrock Farms Whole Milk 1 cup goat cheese 1/4 cup fresh mint, loosely packed and julienned 1/2 teaspoon sugar Breading: 2 whole eggs 1teaspoon water all-purpose flour panko bread crumbs To make polpettes: Heat oven to 350 F. In pan, cover chiles with hot water; simmer until chiles are soft and pliable. In warm sauté pan, toast cumin and coriander until fragrant. In spice grinder, grind until seeds turn to powder.

Remove chiles from water; reserve water. In blender, combine chiles, garlic, ground spices, tomato paste, lemon juice, heavy cream, lemon zest, hot smoked paprika, salt and 1/2 cup reserved chile water; blend until smooth, thick paste forms.

Combine spicy harissa sauce with

beef; mix well to incorporate. Roll into 2-ounce balls and place on sheet tray.

Cook 10 minutes. Remove and allow to cool. Leave oven on.

To make dipping sauce: In food processor, blend milk, goat cheese, mint and sugar. Place in dipping bowl in refrigerator until ready to serve.

To make breading: In pan, crack eggs and add water; whip to incorporate. In separate pans, place flour and bread crumbs. Roll cooled polpettes in flour. Dust off excess.

Roll in egg wash then breadcrumbs; set aside. Repeat until all polpettes are breaded.

Place polpettes back on sheet tray. Cook until golden brown, approximately 10-12 minutes. Serve polpettes hot with chilled dipping sauce.

Note: If unable to find specific chiles, substitute any Mexican chile variety.

4 tablespoons, plus 1 teaspoon, extra-virgin olive oil, divided 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced 1 can (15 ounces) chickpeas 1 tablespoon lemon juice (about 1/2 lemon)

1/2 cup tahini (toasted ground sesame seeds) 1 teaspoon salt Heat oven to 350 F. Cut top of garlic head off and place cutside down on pan; drizzle with 1 teaspoon olive oil. Bake 20-30 minutes, or until garlic is soft. Once cool, squeeze garlic from each clove.

In large skillet over medium-high heat, cook onion in 1 tablespoon olive oil. Stir onion frequently until slices begin to brown.

Reduce heat to low and continue cooking until onions are soft and reach medium brown color.

Rinse and drain chickpeas; reserve 3 tablespoons liquid.

In food processor, blend chickpeas, reserved liquid, lemon juice, tahini, garlic, salt, remaining olive oil and onions until combined and smooth. Serve with pita bread, veggies or crackers.

by Elsie Walker ast year, Christ Episcopal Church, at 369 Sandshore Road in Budd Lake, celebrated 25 years of being located in Mt. Olive. There, its presence is felt in a number of ways. The church is home to the Mt. Olive Food Pantry, plus it opens its space to a variety of community programs.

Besides its weekly worship, the church has All God’s Children (AGC) , a ministry offering twice a month non-denominational services to children of all ages, and particularly children with autism, PDD-NOS, ADHD, ADD, Downs, or any other developmental or physical challenge. The church also reaches out to its community and beyond to share its love through a variety of outreaches.

Church member, Raymond Bonker, of Byram, shared the history of the church: “Christ Episcopal Church was originally formed in 1865 and located in Stanhope. It served as a mission church within the Diocese of Newark until 1981, when it was upgraded to parish status, meaning that the church was self-supporting in terms of finances and clergy. The Stanhope church was sold and the congregation moved to its present location at the corner of Sandshore and Smithtown Roads in the Budd Lake section of Mt. Olive in 1993.”

Rev. Elizabeth Myers has been at the church a little over a year and a half. As the priest-in-residence, she has the continued on page 38

continued from page 37 responsibility for worship and pastoral care. She explained she is there while the church Vestry makes plans and takes steps to bring on board its next Priest-in-Charge. (The vestry is the administrating body of the church.) “They are a wonderful group among which to worship, learn, work and play,” she said of the congregation.

What Myers likes most about the ministry is “offering myself as a channel through whom people are enabled to know and grow in their awareness and experience of the reality and power of God’s love in all that makes up their lives, and in the excitement that comes with sharing this love with others. I especially enjoy how this happens in shared worship, small group discussions and talks with individuals.”

Myers has a number of interests. She noted that she’s been a dog lover all her life and her current dog is Oscar, who she describes as delightful and a good friend. Her hobbies include keeping up with friends and family, making new friends, exploring knitting and drumming, and enjoying golf and watching golf and tennis on TV. The church has two Sunday services. Its traditional Eucharistic service begins at 10:15am (September through June, then moves to 9:30am in July and August) All God’s Children contemporary family service, which was created to meet the needs of families of children with special needs, is held on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of every month at 9:00am (September through early June).

Bonker described the traditional Eucharistic service: “As an Episcopal Church, we generally follow the Anglican cus-

toms in the worship service, known as the Rite II Eucharist. Our worship style is casual and friendly…. We range from individuals comfortable in charismatic praise environments, to individuals preferring a more traditional liturgy.

We follow the principle of our All God’s Children Service in all our worship: whoever you are, however you worship, bring all of who you are to worship God today.” “[It is] a warm, friendly, open environment. It’s an eclectic group of people with different ideas about worship, but we all fit in the same space,” said church member Andrew Lutz of Long Valley. Lutz added, “[The] scriptures are alive; Jesus Christ is alive. I enjoy the comradery and being with the people of the church. It feels like home. They put me at ease.”

The church does not have a choir right now. Congregation member Debbie Burkhart of Sparta explained, “the music for the traditional Eucharistic service is a mix of traditional hymns and contemporary praise music. Music is provided on a ‘music box’, a digital hymnal that plays hymns from various hymnals as well as mp3s.”

While there is no nursery care, there is a room just off the sanctuary which families with children can use as needed.

Bonker explained that after worship, fellowship includes an informal coffee, along with more formal activities, such as a book club discussion, a Bible study or a specific charitable outreach event.

Done twice a month, All God’s Children(AGC) is a contemporary, non-denominational worship service that has been going on since 2006. Bonker shared the details about it: “We continued on page 39

open our doors to children of all ages, and particularly welcome children with autism, PDD-NOS, ADHD, ADD, Downs, or any other developmental or physical challenge. Catering to short attention spans, the service is a lively combination of music and prayer and is only lightly structured and considerably free-form, to allow kids the opportunity to be who they are and to express themselves.

Each AGC service begins and concludes with a Cross Parade which involves carrying handheld crosses around the church to music. Part of the service includes a Mom’s Minute offering a parent an opportunity to share a witness, Bible story time to connect kids with God’s word, followed by prayer, a Joyful Noise activity or interactive song during which kids can use various hand-instruments, singing, and an optional communion. The essential message of God’s love and joy for all of his children is presented in a simplified, but meaningful way. This service brings together children with disabilities and children without disabilities to learn together, and from each other, in an atmosphere of understanding and acceptance. Following each service, a brief fellowship session offers parents an opportunity to share information on topics of interest regarding developmental challenges.”

Fellowship at the church takes the form of everything from a one-time event to on-going groups.

For example, when a newer member of the congregation bought a home, Myers and several members of the church came to offer a house blessing. Then, there is the men’s group which has three events a year: two golf outings and a bowling tournament.

There is a weekly knitters group which makes scarves and shawls, and donates them to the Seamen’s Institute (which supports the men and women who spend months at sea in the maritime trade) and to local ministries for children in hospitals or in need.

Speaking of outreach, Christ Episcopal Church helps those both in its local community and beyond.

The church is home to the Mt. Olive Food Pantry. Previously located in township offices, the church took on the ministry of housing and supporting the pantry. “The food pantry’s board, Partners in Compassion, consists of members from Christ Church, Mountaintop Church, and a local synagogue. Christ Church hosts the food pantry in its parish

hall. On a weekly basis, the pantry serves at least 25 families or individuals. The food bank is opening our church to participate in a broader community of faith. It is staffed by volunteers from several churches and a synagogue in Mt. Olive,” said Bonker.

In addition to the knitting group’s outreach mentioned previously, the church is involved in other things that help people both near and far away. The church participates in Operation Christmas Child, which is a program of the Samaritan Purse organization.

That program distributes shoebox-size boxes, filled with small gifts, and the story of Jesus to poor children around the world. “We fill dozens of shoeboxes every year,” shared Bonker. The church also participates in a coupon exchange program for which they encourage members to donate coupons.

“Through this initiative, we have helped a military family as far away as Japan, as well as families in our own neighborhood,” said Bonker. The church has been a long-time supporter of the North Porch Women’s and Infants’ Centers. According to the latter’s website (www.northporch.org/), “North Porch Women & Infants’ Centers is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides emergency aid, in the form of baby supplies, to mothers and infants in northern New Jersey, to help them stabilize and improve the quality of their lives.” Finally, Bonker noted that the church has recently begun a prison ministry focused on children of the incarcerated.

The church opens its doors to a number of groups and programs. One of those is Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). AA meetings are held in the downstairs of the church every weekday, typically for 40 to 50 people daily. Bonker shared that the “Early Risers” AA group meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30 am to noon, and the evening group meets every Tuesday and Thursday night at 7pm. In addition, the church provides space for community programs, such as those for DAWN Center For Independent Living and the Mt. Olive Advancing Opportunities group.

2020 looks to be a big year for Christ Episcopal Church. Late last year, it completed the self-study process required in order to begin its search for a new priest. The church hopes to call its next pastor early this year.

Saint Valentine’s Day; the Legend

By Henry M. Holden ost of us are familiar with St. Valentine’s Day. Every February 14, people exchange Saint Valentine’s Day messages of affection, love and devotion around the world. According to the History Channel, approximately 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged on Valentine’s Day. That makes it the second most card sending day in the world.

Why is it the most important human emotion is so poorly celebrated and lost in a ritualistic exchange of chocolates, silly cards, and stuffed animals?

At least one movie, a romantic comedy, was produced in 2010 about the day. The movie follows nearly two dozen people as they find and lose love in all its many forms over the course of the title day. Critics called it, “glib, shallow, lame, and stale” so it is no wonder the movie yielded only an 18-percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

But that one bad apple should not spoil the barrel, and why the day is celebrated.

The American Film Industry listed their 100 best love stories with Casablanca (1942) coming in at number one. Number 100 is Jerry McGuire (1996) and number 50 is Shakespeare in Love (1998). Strangely, in the 20 years since Shakespeare in Love there has not been a love story added to the list.

The day became infamous for a short time when seven members of Chicago’s North Side Gang were gunned down in a garage in what became known as the “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.” It remains one of Chicago’s darkest moments but has never darkened the spirits of lovers on that day.

St. Valentine’s Day is also clouded by fanciful and mysterious legends. The traditional observance of Saint Valentine’s Day comes from an early pagan ritual of Lupercalia and Christian legends surrounding the martyrdom of a priest. Historically, Valentine’s Day has nothing to do with love. Little is known of the saint’s life, but most church historians believe he is at least the namesake of the holiday. If we look back on the origins of romantic love, we find the custom emerged long after the saint died.

There are several legends surrounding Saint Valentine’s Day. The story of St. Valentine’s Day begins in the third century with the Roman Emperor Claudius ll. According to one legend, Claudius had prohibited marriage of young men, claiming bachelors made better soldiers. Valentine, possibly a

priest, continued to secretly perform marriage ceremonies until he was eventually apprehended by the Romans and put to death.

The most documented legend is the story of a priest/physician name Valentinus who fell in love with the daughter of Claudius’ jailer. Contrary to popular belief, he was not initially a Christian priest but a pagan healer.

It was during the Roman persecution of the Christians that Emperor Claudius had ordered all Romans to worship twelve gods. He had also made it a crime punishable by death to aid or associate with Christians. As a healer, it was Valentinus’ job to help people. Not even the threat of death could keep him from practicing his healing arts. Eventually they arrested him for helping Christians.

Ancient Rome did not have a speedy trial in their judicial system, and Valentinus languished for months in his stone cell. While in prison, he met many Christians and saw the dignity and conviction they had in their faith. Their strength gave Valentinus the strength he needed, and he converted to Christianity.

Over the months he became friends with a jailer. The jailer, seeing Valentinus was a man of learning, asked if he could bring his blind daughter to Valentinus for lessons in Roman history. His daughter’s name was Asterius (some say Julia) and she was quick to learn. Valentinus read the history of Rome to her, described the world of nature, and taught her the Word of Jesus Christ. Asterius saw the world of Jesus through Valentinus’ eyes. She trusted him and found comfort in his quiet strength.

Asterius wanted to see the world of Jesus through Valentinus eyes.

“Valentinus does the Lord really hear our prayers?” she asked him one day.

“Yes, my child, He hears each one.”

“Do you know what I pray for every day?” She queried. “I pray that I might see.

I want to see everything you’ve told me about.”

“The Lord does what is best for us if we will believe in him.,” Valentinus said.

Valentinus’ faith in the Lord was unswerving. “Let us kneel together and pray to the Lord Jesus Christ for strength.” As they knelt in prayer, a brilliant light invaded the prison cell.

Asterius cried out, “Valentinus I can see!

I can see!”

“Praise be to the Lord,” exclaimed Val-

entinus. After calming Asterius the two knelt in a prayer of thanksgiving.

In those days, declaring a miracle in the name of Jesus Christ sealed his fate. On the eve of his death, Valentinus wrote a note to Asterius urging her to stay close to the Lord and pray for strength. Valentinus, resigned to his own death, did not admonish his captors. He wrote to Asterius that it was God’s will. He signed a note “from your Valentinus.”

On February 14, 270 A.D., Valentinus was clubbed to death and beheaded near a gate in Rome now called Porto Valentinus in his memory. Asterius secretly planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave in what today is the Church of Praxedes. Today, the almond tree remains a symbol of love and friendship.

Several centuries went by and slowly Christians were able to emerge and publicly display and practice their faith.

The pagan Romans, now in a minority, still celebrated the feast of Lupercalia which had been popular from around 4-B.C. The church decided it was time to replace the pagan custom with a Christian observance.

The pagan celebration honoring Lupercus, was the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Pan, a deity of fertility. It involved a bloody animal sacrifice, one of the many pagan customs abhorrent to the Christians.

The names of teenage women were placed in a box and drawn at random by adoles-

cent men. The feast had all the trappings of a young man’s rite of passage.

Determined to end this eight-hundredyear-old practice, the church sought a saint to replace the deity Lupercus. Since Valentine’s death fell on the eve of the feast, he was a convenient candidate to usurp the popularity of Lupercalia. In 496 A.D., Pope Gelasius outlawed the mid-February Lupercalia feast. The pope was clever enough to retain the random selection, aware of the Roman’s love for games of chance. In the box that was once held the names of available and single women, he replaced the names with the names of saints. Both Christian men and women drew slips of paper and were asked to emulate the life of the saint’s name they drew for the coming year.

The spiritual overseer of this “game” was St. Valentine. For the women to draw the names of the saints must have disappointed many Roman males. Rather than be cut out of the picture and replaced by a saint, the young Roman men established a custom of offering women they admired a handwritten greeting of affection. They tied it into the drawing of the saint’s names and the greetings eventually acquired St. Valentine’s name.

With the passage of still more time Christianity spread throughout the world.

The cards did not become wide-spread in the United States until around 1850 when a New England native began mass-reproducing them.

Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, and heroic figure but above all, a romantic figure.

Today many of us send modern Valentine messages to reaffirm what Jean Valjean said in Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, “The supreme happiness in life is in the conviction that we are all loved.” Let us

make this month not just a month of love, but the happy beginning to a year of loving and being loved and fulfil the Scripture the apostle Paul advised us, “Let all that you do be done in love,” (Cor. 16:14 NASB) In the words of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…” Give someone your message of affection on Saint Valentine’s Day in other ways that may be even more loving, memorable and lasting. Go back to when it all started by creating a second first date.

After dinner head for a karaoke bar. After all, what better way to celebrate your chemistry than singing classic-couples’ duets such as Sonny and Cher’s “I Got You Babe” together.

Okay, the weather may not be great, so you don’t want to go out. Create a themed dinner and movie night at home. Find the movie Roman Holiday and watch Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck fall in love.
