Memorial Day History Explains Origins Of National Holiday
hree years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. The ceremonies centered around the mourning-draped veranda of the Arlington mansion, once the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Various Washington officials, including Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, presided over the ceremonies. After speeches, children from the Soldiers’ and
Sailors’ Orphan Home and members of the GAR made their way through the cemetery, strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves, reciting prayers and singing hymns. Local Observances Claim To Be First Local springtime tributes to the Civil War dead already had been held in various places. One of the first occurred in Columbus, Miss., April 25, 1866, when a group of women visited a cemetery to decorate the graves of Confederate soldiers who had fallen in battle at Shiloh. Nearby were the graves of Union soldiers, neglected because they were the enemy. Disturbed at the sight of the bare graves, the women placed some of their flowers on those graves, as well. Today, cities in the north and the south claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1866. Both Macon and Columbus, Ga., claim the title, as well as Richmond, Va. The village of Boalsburg,
Pa., claims it began there two years earlier. A stone in a Carbondale, Ill., cemetery carries the statement that the first Decoration Day ceremony took place there on April 29, 1866. Carbondale was the wartime home of Gen. Logan. Approximately 25 places have been named in connection with the origin of Memorial Day, many of them in the South where most of the war dead were buried. Official Birthplace Declared In 1966, congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y., the “birthplace” of Memorial Day. There, a ceremony on May 5, 1866, honored local veterans who had fought in the Civil War. Businesses closed and residents flew flags at half-staff. Supporters of Waterloo’s claim say earlier observances in other places were informal, not community-wide or onetime events. By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day cer-
emonies were being held on May 30 throughout the nation. State legislatures passed proclamations designating the day, and the Army and Navy adopted regulations for proper observance at their facilities. It was not until after World War I, however, that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, though it is still often called Decoration Day. It was then also placed on the last Monday in May, as were some other federal holidays. Some States Have Confederate Observances Many Southern states also have their own days for honoring the Confederate dead. Mississippi celebrates Confederate Memorial Day on the last Monday of April, Alabama on the fourth Monday of April, and Georgia on April 26. North and South Carolina observe it on May 10, Louisiana on

June 3 and Tennessee calls that date Confederate Decoration Day. Texas celebrates Confederate Heroes Day January 19 and Virginia calls the last Monday in May Confederate Memorial Day. Gen. Logan’s order for his posts to decorate graves in 1868 “with the choicest flowers of springtime” urged: “We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. ... Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.” The crowd attending the first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery was approximately the same size as those
that attend today’s observance, about 5,000 people. Then, as now, small American flags were placed on each grave — a tradition followed at many national cemeteries today. In recent years, the custom has grown in many families to decorate the graves of all departed loved ones. The origins of special services to honor those who die in war can be found in antiquity. The Athenian leader Pericles offered a tribute to the fallen heroes of the Peloponnesian War more than 24 centuries ago that could be applied today to the 1.1 million Americans who have died in the nation’s wars: “Not only are they commemorated by columns and inscriptions, but there dwells also an unwritten memorial of them, graven not on stone but in continued on page 2

es, you read correctly, there is a silent killer among us almost everyday. It can be with you the very moment your alarm sounds in the morning and can follow you into your car while you’re driving. It can stay with you at your desk while working or even when picking your kids up from school. It can follow you around all day long and can even get into your bed with you at night. If you haven’t already guessed, the silent killer is stress. In fact, stress alone is linked to the six leading causes of death (Heart Disease, Cancer, Lung Disease, Accidents, Cirrhosis of the
Warning.. There is a Silent Killer Among Us
Liver and Suicide). Not only does stress affect your mood, but it actually causes physiological changes in the body. What does that actually mean? Let’s break it down and simplify this complex cascade of events: When confronted with a stressful situation, our bodies react involuntarily. The nervous system responds by releasing different stress hormones like Cortisol and Adrenaline, engaging the body’s “fight or flight” response. In ancient times, this was an advantage for survival when stresses included fleeing from wild animals that could eat you. So, this response was necessary for survival and
could actually save your life. The “fight or flight” response causes your heart to beat faster, your blood pressure to rise, increases the rate of respiration and enhances your senses. Unfortunately, this response still kicks in from stress that we experience everyday that may not be life threatening. Things like traffic, an angry boss or a family fight is much different than getting chased by a hungry bear, but our bodies involuntarily respond in the same way. Constant, repeated stress is detrimental to the body and can result in disease and even death. From an Acupuncture
and Chinese medical perspective, stress causes an imbalance of energy in the body. In a healthy person, energy flows smoothly throughout the body. Healthy people experience different emotions everyday, which is a normal part of life. No one can escape being stressed, worried, angry or sad at certain times, but it is when these emotions are too intense or when they are prolonged over a long period of time that they disrupt the balance of energy within the body and become the cause of disease. This is especially true if the emotions are not expressed and are kept inside for a long peri-
od of time (a big no no!). Signs & symptoms of an overactive response to stress include: Anger, Anxiety, Asthma, Nausea, Depression, Depressed immune system, Digestive disorders, Headaches, Heart disease, High blood pressure, Insomnia, Joint pain, Palpitations, Panic Attacks, Shortness of breath and Weight problems. If you are someone who experiences any of the symptoms above or is simply just stressed out...there is hope! Acupuncture has been helping people to cope with stress for thousands of years. It can help to balance the mental and physical symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. In addition, Acupuncture and Chinese medicine aims at treating the root cause of the issue. Best of all, it is a safe, effective and drugfree treatment! Here are some ways to help combat stress on a daily basis: 1.) Manage your stress with Acupuncture! Acupuncture helps to reduce stress hormones like Cortisol, relax muscle tension and helps restore the body’s balance so that your body calms down and even responds better to stress in the future. 2.) Get enough sleep! Try to get at least 8 hours of restful sleep. Our bodies handle stress much better when we are well rested. 3.) Start your day with meditation. You don’t have to be an expert yogi to meditate... but try a simple breathing exercise. Inhale slowly for 10 seconds, pause, then exhale slowly for 10 seconds. Repeat
for 5-10 minutes each day. You can also play calming music to enhance relaxation during your meditation. Meditation calms the nerves, reduces the release of stress hormones in your body and prevents adrenal exhaustion. 4.) Drink your stress away....with Green Tea this is! Green tea reduces cortisol, the hormone that your body releases in response to stress. 5.) Boost your mood with Diet & Exercise! Increasing your intake of leafy green veggies helps your body to stay healthy and deal with stress better. Daily exercise also helps to reduce cortisol levels and increases the levels of the “happy” chemicals in the brain. 6.) Beat Stress With Positive Thinking! Your conscious mind can help to control the way that your body responds to stressful situations. Instead of getting down on yourself, repeat affirmations like “I am fully capable of handling the obstacles that cross my path and nothing can stand in my way”. Repeating positive affirmations also reduces the levels of cortisol that are released from the adrenal glands. 7.) Write Your Stress Away. Writing in a journal can help you get out pent up emotions- relieving any built up tension. 8.) Have Fun! Do something you enjoy or watch a funny movie. Laughing releases the “feel good” chemicals in the brain. For more information on stress reduction and Acupuncture, call Mount Olive Acupuncture & Wellness 973.527.7978.

Local Chiropractor Jumps Offices To Hackettstown
n 2006 Dr. Michael Hyjek opened Valley Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Long Valley. During those successful years, Hyjek has grown his practice, offering more services as research and technology validated their effectiveness. After 10 years in Long Valley, Hyjek was able to celebrate that milestone with a move to a larger location at the beginning of this year To Riverside Plaza in Hackettstown. The new location is over double the size of his prior office as well as equipped with state of the art therapies Class IV Laser Therapy, DOC Spinal Decompression Table, Impulse IQ Adjustment instrument. Hyjek uses traditional chiropractic care but understands that when there are safe effective therapies which decrease pain and speed up the natural healing process they are
implemented. Hyjek and Riverside Gym have a great relationship, and because of the shared desire for a person’s health and wellness, “we can now help you achieve more than getting you out of pain, but reclaiming your health!” Current therapies include: DOC Decompression Table - Today Spinal Decompression is emerging as the leading solution for back and neck pain. More than 100,000 patients are successfully treated. Decompression treats herniated disks, degenerated disks, facet syndrome, sciatica, and chronic neck and back pain. The results are longterm and decompression fixes the problem rather than masking it. K-Laser Class IV - therapeutic lasers deliver specific red and near-infrared wavelengths of laser light to induce a photochemical reaction and therapeutic ef-
fect. Physiological effects include increased circulation, reduced inflammation, pain reduction and enhanced tissue healing. During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness and pain. As the injured area returns to normal, function is restored and pain is relieved. This only takes a few minutes! http://www.k-laser. com/medical-patients. Impulse IQ Adjuster - This patented and FDA registered device was developed to provide gentle and precise computer-aided chiropractic adjustments to relieve pain and restore function. The Madness Hits Hackettstown With Annual Car Show
C
By Elsie Walker ars and helping good causes, that’s what the annual Memorial Motor Madness is all about. Planned and organized by Hackettstown Rotary Club, the event takes place on the grounds of MARS Chocolate/North America in Hackettstown on Sun., May 28, with gates open to the public at 8 a.m. Rotary member Kevin Guyette notes that up to 500 cars may be on display on a good weather day. Registration information is available online at hackettstownrotaryclub.com with a special advance discount. In addition to the cars, there will be music by DJ Doc South and vendors selling food and other items. Spectator admission is $5. Chil-
dren under the age of 12 are admitted free. For more information, call 908-8507005. Guyette noted.” no alcohol or pets are permitted on the grounds, and no pop-up tents or canopies.” Two trophies will be given. One is the People’s Choice (popular vote among all attendees) and the other is the Ed Hagaman Best in Show, named after one of the founders of the show which started 25 years ago. In addition, there are 21 classes of vehicles eligible for judging by show participants. “Ed passed away several years ago and his friend, Larry Middleton, enjoys seeing how far the show has come in 18 years since the Rotary Club picked it
up,” said Guyette. As host site, Mars Chocolate/North America not only provides a beautiful, fun location, but adds to the enjoyment of the day. “MARS Chocolate/ North America opens its arms and grounds to the car show each year knowing it’s going to be a successful event, not only for the Rotary Club, but for the community at large,” said Guyette. “They graciously provide all grounds care and security and make sure the gates are covered with cases of M&M’s for incoming spectators.” While people enjoy looking at the cars and the friendly M&M characters looking back at them via signs and images on the Mars Chocolate/North
America buildings, it is important to remember just what the show does: it helps many charitable organizations. “The Foundation for Hackettstown Medical Center is a major beneficiary, as well as a number of local charities and nonprofits that include The Arc of Warren County, NORWESCAP Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, DASAAC, Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, Camp Warren, and Camp Merry Heart, among others,” explained Guyette. In addition, Sandi Vaessen, the International chair for the Hackettstown Rotary Club, noted that a rotary project, the Himalayan Cataract project would also benefit. That project helps
those with preventable blindness in third world countries to regain sight. Helene G. Meissner, director of NORWESCAP Food Bank, explained how the food bank relies on donations as it is not federally or state funded. Those do-
nations help the organization to provide more than two million pounds of food to more than 100 charitable organizations that feed the hungry in Northwest New Jersey. Meissner noted that for every $1 donated, the continued on page 8

Annual Car Show...
continued from page 6 NORWESCAP Food Bank can provide 14 pounds of food to a family in need. Thus, her organization appreciates what the Hackettstown Rotary Club does for it through Memorial Motor Madness and other projects during the year. “We have a wonderful relationship with the Hackettstown rotary,” said Meissner. “They are very supportive of us. Also, they are a lot of fun.” Providing music during the day is a mainstay of the car show: DJ, Doc South. He was on radio for years: on WRNJ with a Saturday oldies show and then a daily afternoon show called “The Front Porch” and on WNTI with a weekly oldies show. He now does an oldies webcast from his home and is the author of two books: “Blurps, the Starter Set” and “Aunt Barb’s Magic Oven.” Guyette said “It would not be a car show without Doc South. He is the backbone of the day’s festivities and provides a musical backdrop that complements the nostalgia of the vintage and muscle cars. He takes
time during the day to remind everyone of the significance of the Memorial Day weekend and to thank our sponsors and volunteers.” Also, South asks those attending the show to remember our active duty soldiers. He takes donates for Operation UpLink, a Veterans of Foreign Wars charity, which helps deployed soldiers to communicate with their families. He has been doing this since 9/11. “I had friends who were killed in Viet Nam, and people I went to school with, too,” shared South as he explained his motivation for collecting for Operation UpLink. He noted that he’d also interviewed veterans when he was on WRNJ. Through the stories they shared, he learned of their experiences and their bravery. After 9/11, he felt he should support those who fight and so started the collection at the car show. Also, he donates the fee he receives for being the show’s DJ and adds that to the collection. Since he started the effort after 9/11, $19,000 has been col-
lected for the charity. Of course, Memorial Motor Madness would not take place without the work of the Hackettstown Rotary Club. Guyette reflected on that and the work Rotary does throughout the year. “Of all the many projects the Hackettstown Rotary Club is actively engaged in throughout the year, from shredding and food collection drives to special event comedy shows and support of many Rotary District 7470 and International programs, the Memorial Motor Madness Car Show is the most labor intensive and hardest work we love,” she said. “It’s a joy to see the camaraderie and energy at work that day; everyone is invested in its success in one way or another,” continued Guyette. “The members of this club are some of the best people in the world. We welcome new members to help us continue our work and carry through our mission to serve in the coming years.” The club meets Tuesdays at 12:15 p.m. at The Panther Valley Club in Allamuchy.

r. Ira Goldberg, a leading local authority on dental implants and owner of Morris County Dental Associates in Succasunna, spent four days in Colorado educating a group of 80 dentists regarding dental implants. Topics he covered included the use of CT scans, computers, and computer-generated products that allow for faster, safer and more-predictable treatments for patients. He also assisted the students in hands-on sessions where they practiced different surgical procedures related to implants. “These 80 doctors have taken it upon themselves to invest valuable resources, such as time and money, to educate themselves in a program called a Maxi-Course sponsored by the American Academy of Implant Dentistry,” states Goldberg.
“Not only is it an honor to be working with such dedicated dentists, but it’s also an honor to be asked to be part of the faculty that provides this education.” The hands-on sessions are a valuable part of the dentists’ training, too. The ability to perform different types of procedures in a controlled environment of a laboratory is instrumental to the educational process and refining clinical skills. Goldberg was asked to be part of this module due to his decades of experience with these procedures. Goldberg has been involved with computer-guided implant procedures throughout his entire career, but he has seen an exponential change within the last few years. “It’s absolutely amazing to see how things change so quickly,” says Goldberg.
“I feel lucky that I am in a position not only to have all of this technology and use it every day, but also to be able to share it with other doctors.” Goldberg holds many honors in the field of implant dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology / Implant Dentistry, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Regarding his Diplomate status, there are only a few hundred dentists worldwide that hold this distinction. Goldberg performs all phases of implant dentistry and rarely are referrals required. For a free consultation, including a free 3-D scan, call his office at 973328-1225 or visit www. MorrisCountyDentist.com.

By Elsie Walker t can change someone’s life in six minutes,” said Hackettstown resident Sandi Vaessenin describing the Himalayan Cataract Project. The “it” is the gift of sight. In the United States, people tend to think of cataracts as a condition that comes with getting older and is easily remedied; however, in third world countries, cataracts can affect all ages, including children. Reasons for these cataracts include poor nutrition and poverty. Up until now, getting cataracts in a third world country meant blindness, period. Now, through the Himalayan Cataract Project, those with preventable blindness can receive a surgery that will help them to see well the very next day. Accord-

Cataract Project Changes Lives In Six Minutes
ing to the CBS report, so far four million have been helped, but there are still many in need. Locally, the Hackettstown Rotary Club has become involved with the Himalayan Cataract project and its efforts in Ghana. Recently, Vaessen, the owner of Worldwide Passages in Hackettstown and the International chair for the Hackettstown Rotary Club shared about the project and the club’s support of it. That support started last year with a donation of $5,000 for surgeries. Currently, the club is working on raising money to ship a used bus to Ghana where it will be used to transport those needing cataract treatment to where they can receive it. Part of the reason that people do not get the
surgery is not only the cost, but availability: they have no way to get to a place where there is treatment. Some people in these third world countries would need to travel 200 miles to where the treatments are done. Thus, transportation is important. Vaessen noted that previously, the Hackettstown Rotary had partnered with a rotary club in St. Kitts to bring medical equipment, used but functional, to that area and people to train those in St. Kitts on its use. That partnership lasted for 10 years. Once it ended, Vaessen was looking for another way the Hackettstown Rotary could reach out internationally. “I was looking for something to light my fire,” she said.
She was watching an HBO news program when she became inspired. The program was on The Himalayan Cataract Project which started in Nepal. A specific technique is used, developed by two eye surgeons: Dr. Sanduk Ruit
and Dr. Geoffrey Tabin who fate brought together. Ruit comes from the poorest city in Nepal. Tabin is an American, from Salt Lake City; he is also an avid mountain climber, travelling all over the world to conquer summits. It was during his
travels that the two doctors met. Using the procedure they’ve developed, a cataract surgery for preventative blindness can be done in six to seven minutes. Their technique has been taught to others so that more people continued on page 11

Cataract Project... continued from page 10 can be helped. After seeing the report, Vaeseen thought that helping a country in the Himalayan Cataract Project would be just the type of outreach for the Hackettstown Rotary Club to champion. She called the project
and found that it was looking for support in helping those in Ghana. Vaessen noted the cost per surgery, per individual, was $20-$25 dollars. Though patients will try to pay if they can, most are too poor to do so. Vaessen said that the cost in particular was what
moved her. For so little, a person’s life can be changed. Also, she liked that doctors in those countries are being trained on the work. “It’s no good to give a fix and walk away,” she said. “You need to teach doctors there so they can continue the work.”

“The need there [Ghana] is endless,” said Vaessen. She said she knew she had found the outreach project for the Hackettstown Rotary Club. She also noted that in sharing about it, people have been stirred by her enthusiasm. “The [rotary] club is firmly behind this project,” said Vaessen. One thing Vaessen learned about the surgery that surprised her was that it cannot only make a difference for an individual, but for that person’s family as well. In these third world countries, if an elderly person gets cataracts and becomes blind, a family member must give up working and stay at home with the affected individual. That means one less person contributing to a family’s
income that is severely limited as is. Thus, restoring a person’s sight, frees up another person to work to bring money into a struggling household. For Hackettstown Rotary Club’s efforts to help those
in Ghana, Vaessen said that donations to this effort are welcomed. People can send checks to the Hackettstown Rotary Foundation, PO Box 561, Hackettstown NJ 07840; mark attention: Himalayan Cataract Project.

St. James’ Episcopal Church Plans Golf Outing To Support Missions
t. James’ Episcopal Church of Hackettstown will hold its Ninth Annual Golf Outing on Mon., June 26, at Farmstead Golf & Country Club in Lafayette. The money raised from the golf outing is used to help carry out the ministry and mission of St. James’. This has included supporting local food-insecure children with supplemental food through our Backpack Program, sending a team of teens to help repair houses in Appalachia and opening the parish hall as a
warming and food center in times of need. The church also hosts literacy tutoring, the North Porch Center for mothers and newborns, and grief counseling services through the Joseph T. Quinlan Bereavement Center. The cost per individual is $130. This includes golf, cart, box lunch, event gifts and a banquet dinner afterward, as well as door prizes, and eligibility for the on-course contests, including longest drive and closest to the pin. Registration and box lunch begin at 11 a.m., with
a shotgun start at 1 p.m., featuring a four-person scramble format. Sponsorship opportunities are available starting at $100 per hole. A sponsorship will bring awareness to your business through signage on the golf course, as well as an ad in the golf outing brochure. For questions, to register, or inquire about sponsorship opportunities, contact the golf committee by email at: stjamesgolf214@ gmail.com. Registration is requested by June 17.

rospective borrowers can take several steps to earn lower interest rates when applying for loans. Lenders consider a host of factors when determining interest rates for their borrowers. Some of these factors are market-based, while others are determined by the United States Federal Reserve. But borrowers are not helpless when it comes to securing low interest rates. The down payment amount as well as borrowers’ credit scores and histories can
help or hurt them when it comes to interest rates. For example, the larger the down payment a potential home buyer is willing to put down to buy a home, the more likely that borrower earns a lower interest rate from his or her bank. That’s because the bank sees borrowers who are willing to put down a substantial sum of their own money as highly likely to repay the loan in full and on time. In addition, borrowers with strong credit histories and high credit scores
have already demonstrated their ability to repay their debts, and that reputation often benefits them in the form of lower interest rates on major purchases like homes and automobiles. Borrowers also may be able to secure low interest rates if they are willing to repay loans quickly. The shorter the duration to maturity, the smaller the interest rate may be. That’s because banks see long-term loans as less likely to be repaid than short-term loans.

Hackettstown High Senior Receives Centenary University Full Scholarship
entenary University in Hackettstown has announced the recipient of the Hackettstown High School student scholarship for the fall semester of 2017 — Pier Semanchik, an accomplished student and avid equestrian. The scholarship is one of the ongoing partnerships between the institutions, which was established in 2007. This scholarship covers tuition for one HHS
during his or her four-year stay. “I am pleased that Pier Semanchik has earned this scholarship,’’ said Dr. David Haney, president of Centenary University.. “Each year, we honor one Hackettstown High School student who has excelled academically and has demonstrated the qualities that this institution values. Pier exhibits outstanding academic credentials. She consistently
commits time and energy to community affairs. I have no doubt that Pier will flourish as an active and involved member of the Centenary community.” Semanchik is set to graduate from HHS this June. Her transcripts already boast three dual-credit, college-level courses that she completed at Warren County Community College during her high school career. Her community ser-
Real Estate Agent Donohue-Conway Earns Staging Certification
R
E/MAX Town & Valley agent Maureen Donohue-Conway recently earned the designation of certified staging professional as studies continue to show that staged homes often sell faster and for more money. According to the 2016 Home Staging Statistics Report by the Real Estate Staging Association, homes staged before listing sell 90
percent faster than homes listed on the Multiple Listing Service. And that’s just one reason why Donohue-Conway completed the RESE Staging Real Estate Expert course and completed the certification in January, she said. “My goal is to help my clients sell their homes quickly, but also to get the most out of their investment,” said Donohue-Conway, who has been in real estate since 2004. “Staging allows buyers to see the home’s full potential and makes all the difference in getting the sale.” Donohue-Conway is also one of the community’s top real estate producers, having over $2.5 million in sales. She’s earned both
the RE/MAX Circle of Excellence Award and the RE/ MAX 100% Club Award. Centenary Celebrates A Banner Year In Hackettstown
C
entenary University is celebrating an important milestone this year as the institution was founded 150 years ago. Many events are occurring throughout this year
to highlight this important accomplishment. In addition, an initiative was recently implemented where Hackettstown businesses sponsored special 150th anniversary banners that are

being displayed throughout the streets of Hackettstown. “This is an exciting time in the history of the institution,” says John Carno, vice president for University Advancement at
Centenary University. “I am quite pleased to have worked closely with Jim Sheldon, executive director of the Hackettstown Business Improvement District (BID) to secure sponsors for the 150th anniversary banners. It has also been wonderful to have such staunch support of Hackettstown Mayor Maria DiGiovanni. I hope the local community and beyond enjoy seeing this change to the street landscape during their travels. I also encourage members of the community to come to our 150th anniversary celebrations. We are offering opportunities for everyone to enjoy.” Forty-three banners grace Main Street and Mountain Avenue. The
banners include the names of the sponsors. They will continue to be displayed there for the remainder of the year. Half of the sponsorship fee will be donated back to the town of Hackettstown and the other half will offset the cost of producing and installing the banners. “The banners are an important project to celebrate Centenary’s longstanding commitment with the town of Hackettstown, and they represent an important milestone in the history of the town itself,” says Sheldon. “The Hackettstown business community is pleased to have Centenary University as a key institution in our community. We are both allies and entities who seek to continue to
make this a thriving environment for the region.” For more information regarding 150th anniversary events, visit centenaryuniversity.edu/2017events. More Than A Century Later, Electric Cars Come Full Circle At Thomas Edison National Park
By Jennifer Walkup brand new electric car charging station opened at Thomas Edison National Park in West Orange on April 19. More than a century after inventor Thomas Edison parked his own 1914 Detroit Electric car at his factory on Main Street, a new technological innovation was implemented with the installation of this electric car charging station. This project was made possible by a partnership between the National Park Service, the National Park Foundation, the US Energy Department and BMW. One hundred electric charging stations will be installed in national parks
throughout the country. “The partnership between The National Park Service, National Park Foundation, BMW, and the Department of Energy made this possible,” said Thomas Ross, National Park Service superintendent. “This will allow electric cars to travel to and around national parks.” The partnership aims to get more electric vehicles into national parks, rather than relegating electric vehicles to urban areas where charge stations are more easily accessible. This project fosters electric vehicle travel and will raise awareness about electric vehicle technology and plug-in electric vehicles for mil-
lions of park visitors. This project will reduce air pollution in national parks and gateway communities. “We are interested in supporting both electric cars as well as having a positive impact on the environment,” said Ross. “Having the charging stations in the parks will support that. Some parks are many miles of roadways. At this time, we do not have the infrastructure to support electric vehicles in those places. This will change that.” The electric vehicle charging station in West Orange is located in the laboratory complex’s visitor parking area. The program’s first charging station installation was chosen
for the Thomas Edison National Park because of Edison’s inventive nature and his work with electric cars.
“We were proud to launch the national program here in West Orange,” said Ross. “We have two
level-two charging stations at the laboratory complex on Main Street. There is a continued on page 36

Electric Cars Come Full Circle... continued from page 37 great historical connection. Thomas Edison was very interested in electric cars. It really has come full circle.” In the mid-1890s, Edison worked on an electric storage battery for use in electric cars. The park has three of his electric cars in its collection, two Detroit electric vehicles from 1913 and a loco mobile from 1905 which was converted from steam to electric. At Glenmont, Edison’s home, which is also open to visitors, Edison’s own original car charging station resides in the garage. This charging station was built by Edison in 1904. “We want to offer the charging station to visitors of the park but also
to our community in West Orange,” said Ross. “We worked closely with the town and with the West Orange environmental committee as well.” Most stations are two to three miles away in Montclair and near Turtleback Zoo. This new charging station is right in the center of town on Main Street and also near route 280. Courtesy of BMW, the charging station at the Thomas Edison site will operate for free for the first six months. The program will continue to add electric car charging stations throughout national parks during the next two years. They will determine where to install the charging stations based on the strength and
proximity of local electric car markets, the location of other nearby charging stations, as well as various considerations regarding the landscape of the parks. This partnership supports the National Park Foundation’s Centennial Campaign for America’s National Parks which aims to strengthen and enhance the future of America’s natural, historical and cultural treasures for the next 100 years. The mission aspires to do so by protecting America’s treasured places, connecting everyone from all backgrounds with the country’s incomparable natural landscapes, rich history, vibrant culture, as well as inspiring lifelong relationships with national
parks, and creating the next great generation of park visitors and stewards. The NPS is responsible for the stewardship of America’s natural treasures and historic sites. Innovation, entrepreneurship and technology are key parts of its mission and story. Modern transportation produces emissions that affect clear skies and scenic views and make it challenging for the NPS to fulfill its mission to preserve natural, historic, and cultural resources unimpaired for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.
The NPS has more than 20,000 employees that care for America’s 417 national parks. The National Park Foundation is the charity and philanthropic arm of the NPS. This nonprofit foundation aims to protect the more than 84 million acres of national parks through conservation and preservation. The NPS has worked with The US Department of energy on this and other projects in support of the DOE’s Clean cities program by supporting local actions to reduce energy, emissions and petroleum use in transportation. The
benefits of these projects will be far reaching for the nation. Visitors of The Thomas Edison National Historical Park will be able to view the new charging station along with the large variety of other offerings at the park. The site preserves the last and largest of Edison’s laboratories, home of the perfected phonograph, motion pictures and the nickel-iron alkaline storage battery. The museum collection has more than 400,000 artifacts including Edison products, laboratory equipment, and personal belongings of the Edisons.
