Jody Gregory Named Winner in Alte Roofing’s No Roof Left Behind 6th Free Roof Give-Away

ody Gregory has officially been named as the winner of a new roof in Alte Roofing’s No Roof Left Behind program. After a month of voting by the public, Gregory received over one thousand total votes, a little under half of the total votes between four finalists.

In her initial nomination titled “Single Mom- SURVIVOR,” Jody gave a little insight into what her life has been like. She describes it as “ten years of hell.”

Gregory and her family had everything, then suddenly her son passed away. This was followed shortly by a bad divorce, and she had to move herself and two surviving children to a new state. She found herself working 2-3 jobs to make ends meet and re-establish herself; teaching during the day and taking various tutoring jobs that went well into the evenings and weekends. This was especially hard on her children as they were forced to grow up quickly and learn to be independent while their mom worked non-stop to provide for them.

When asked about her experience with the No Roof Left Behind program, Gregory said, “People have been really kind about this.”

“I never even thought that I’d be one of the top people.

I submitted my nomination in the middle of the night on a whim,” Gregory said. “I can’t even tell you how grateful I am.”

The public had a month to vote for their favorite finalist in this program, and Gregory used this to her advantage.

She’s been a teacher in the same school district for many years, and she reached out to the parents of former students asking for their help in voting. But these aren’t the only people she reached out to; she talked to her doctors, friends, shared on various Facebook pages, and even made sure her kids were sharing her link to vote with their friends and their parents.

“There’s no shame in asking for help! My daughter’s friends would even text me and ask me to send them the link so they could share it too. It was really neat the way people were spreading it.”

Gregory was selected as one of four finalists from about 30 entries in the company’s 6th annual roof giveaway. The other finalists were Beverly Stewart of Phillipsburg in Warren County, Peggy Fleck Armory of Mount

Olive in Morris County, and Jane Martz of Long Valley in Morris County.

This is a phrase we hear repeatedly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID has affected our way of life in many aspects, and visits to the dentist are no different. There are many rules and guidelines patients, dentists, and staff must follow: I thought you, the reader, may be interested in knowing what we are doing in the dental field to help protect you, as well as our staff.

Here at Morris County Dental, we’re quite sure we’re doing a great job to do our best to protect you. Almost every patient comments on the efforts they can see in our brand new facility, as well as pre-visit and post-visit protocols. Pre-Visit Screenings: We subscribe to a service that will text you obligatory questions about how you are feeling and where you have recently traveled. You can answer these quickly and easily, and the information

will be transferred to us. We can then reach out to you by phone, email, or text regarding any follow-up needs.

Virtual Reception Rooms: When you arrive for your appointment, we ask that you call or text us, and remain in your car. When we are ready for you, we text or call back.

This way, you are in our facility as little as possible.

Physical Reception Room: We have decreased the number of chairs in our reception room, and are keeping them 6 feet from each other in order to maintain Social Distancing. We have also removed all magazines, toys, etc in order to decrease the number of possible contaminated surfaces.

Temperature readings, hand sanitizers, sneeze guards, masks: These are all techniques or items we have available to protect you from us and each other. When you come into the office, we take temperature readings. You, as well as us, wear masks throughout the office. There are glass separation windows at counters.

Staff Screening: Staff are also required to go through a daily screening process, which includes a questionnaire and temperature checks.

HOCl Foggers: Hypochlorous Acid is a safe solution used in the healthcare industry, food industry, and others to help with de-

contamination. We have fogging machines throughout the office.

Air Purification: We have air filters (HEPA, UltraViolet) within treatment rooms and the reception room. Air within the office is filtered multiple times each hour.

PPE: This is a term only healthcare workers were familiar with before COVID. Now, everyone knows the term! We utilize proper masks, face shields, head coverings, gowns, gloves, etc for both your protection and ours. Although some of these items are still very difficult to come by, we are continually monitoring inventory and sourcing options.

Pre-Treatment Rinses: Some studies have shown rinsing with Hydrogen Peroxide or Povidone-Iodine can be effective in our COVID world. We utilize these pre-treatment rinses.

Post-Visit Screenings: 24 to 48 hours after your visit, you will receive another text asking how you are feeling. This allows you, as well as us, to follow your health, and take action as needed.

So, as we have said, “Welcome To Our New World.” We do hope you and your loved ones stay safe and healthy. We will do our best to maintain your oral health as safely as possible, and we all hope this situation will pass soon.

Want to Boost Economic Growth?

Tell Government to Spend Less

Intellectuals are supposed to speak truth to power. Unfortunately, some seem to be more interested in saying what everyone expects them to say, which only reinforces the status quo.

Thankfully, a few scholars are resisting this trend, fighting for what is true rather than what is popular.

Case in point: a recent Hoover Institution paper on “A Pro-Growth Fiscal Consolidation Plan for the United States” by economists John Cogan, Daniel Heil and John Taylor, which makes the case for a reduction in spending now in order to positively impact the economy.

It’s refreshing to see their research, considering that we live in a world where pundits and even economists bend over backward to make the case that more debt is not a problem and that more fiscal stimulus is desirable. Never mind that the arguments that intellectuals offer to defend these claims aren’t supported by the academic literature. Consider the mistaken notion that more spending will stimulate the economy and somehow reduce the debt burden of the policy in the first place. Research overwhelmingly confirms that, for a variety of reasons, the return of government spending on economic growth is much less than the money spent.

Then there’s the argument that interest rates are low and hence, it’s a good time to take on more debt -- despite the chance that variable interest won’t always be that low. But more debt, even at low rates, still means more interest payments. Before COVID-19, the United States paid close to $400 billion in interest payments annually, or 8% of our budget. It’s only going to get worse now. Japan, for instance, has a massive amount of debt, despite its 0% long-term interest rates. Its debt repayments are its second-largest budget item.

I wish reporters and economists would stop asserting, like The Wall Street Journal recently did, “The example of

Mark Shields Japan has shown that debts can rise for a long time, well above 200% of GDP, without sparking a fiscal crisis.” Really? I would have thought that Japan’s two decades of no growth and wage stagnation could be considered a crisis.

Moreover, Japan is quite different than the United States and can get away with more overall debt than we could.

That’s because most Japanese securities are held in the Social Security trust fund that’s owned by the government. This means that net public sector debt is actually significantly lower in Japan than in the United States.

Enter the new paper by Cogan, Heil and Taylor, which finds that, when faced with an inevitable debt explosion in our future, the only viable and desirable option is for Uncle Sam to limit expenditures as a share of GDP, around the 20% ratio that prevailed before the pandemic. The authors find that this approach avoids the “potentially large increase in future federal taxes.” Better yet, they actually find that the policy would boost both short- and long-term GDP. This research will be added to decades of empirical evidence that spending-based consolidations are expansionary in the long term and, sometimes, can boost growth in the short term, too.

When Reporters Babble ‘Without Evidence’

ne of the common tropes we see in everyday news coverage is the claim that something said by President Donald Trump or his supporters is “without evidence.” This is a stark factual claim. Sometimes, it’s starkly wrong.

The hashtag #DefundNPR started trending on Sept. 1 after NPR tweeted this to 8.3 million followers: “President Trump declined to condemn the actions of the suspected 17-year-old shooter of 3 protesters against police brutality in Kenosha -- claiming, without evidence, that it appeared the gunman was acting in self-defense.”

Video evidence clearly shows a man holding a handgun approach the 17-year-old, Kyle Rittenhouse, while he is on his back, and Rittenhouse shoot him in the arm. You don’t have to justify everything Rittenhouse did to know there’s obvious evidence of acting in self-defense.

The actual article NPR linked in the tweet made no such boast of Trump acting “without evidence.” Reporter Alana Wise cautiously claimed: “Graphic video from the chaotic scene only tells a partial story. The shooter’s alleged actions have split onlookers on party lines.” But she failed to explain what the video showed.

The words “without evidence” are routinely applied to Trump’s statements about mail-in voting. On the “Today” show on Aug. 16, NBC’s Hallie Jackson said, “On Saturday, the president, without evidence, claimed mail-in voting to be, quote, ‘catastrophic.’” On the same show two days later, NBC’s Peter Alexander lectured saying, “The president, without evidence, keeps escalating his attacks on universal mail-in voting and defending recent policy changes at the Postal Service that critics warn could delay the delivery of ballots.”

But NBC is blatantly avoiding evidence from its own base in New York City. The city took six weeks to count a record 400,000 absentee ballots cast in the June 23 primary and didn’t certify

When Maloney’s opponent, Suraj Patel, conceded last week, he complained that 11,000 ballots in the district remained uncounted. Thousands of voters also reported receiving their ballots late or never getting one.

If you’re a Patel backer, that would feel “catastrophic.” It would certainly feel “catastrophic” to Trump-hating reporters if Trump were to win a state with mail-in ballots by a narrow margin.

They would complain if it took weeks to count the ballots and if some ballots were never counted. No one believes they wouldn’t eagerly promote challenges to the integrity of the election.

Meanwhile, it’s sadly routine for liberal media outlets to make outlandish claims about Trump. The Washington Post editorial board recently published a hyperpartisan editorial claiming Trump “has done as much as any global actor to advance the cause of authoritarianism and undermine the free world. Mr. Trump’s most conspicuous aid to tyranny has been his relentless support for Russian President Vladimir Putin.”

Exploring Another Treatment Option for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

hronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome (CFIS) also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) is a disabling and poorly understood illness that is becoming more widespread in Western countries. CFIS is a term used to describe a myriad of neurological, neuromuscular, and immunological abnormalities. The initial onset of CFIS consists of flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, chills and extreme fatigue. The chronic manifestations of CFIS always include disabling fatigue but can also include muscle and joint pain, sleep disorders, headaches, hypo- or hypersensitivities, cognitive disorders, depression, malaise, anxiety, irritability, confusion, weight fluctuations, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, muscle fatigue, worsening PMS, visual disturbances, tachycardia, paresthesias, dry eyes, dry mouth, night sweats, skin rashes and decreased sexual desire.

The etiology of CFIS is still unknown, but the suspected cause is a viral infection. Some researchers believe that CFIS is actually a neurological response to a viral infection. Since there are no absolute markers or lab tests to confirm the illness, chronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome is often diagnosed by symptoms alone and by process of elimination.

For the same reasons, western medicine has no treatment for chronic fatigue. Instead,

doctors prescribe individual medications to deal with each of the associated symptoms.

As with any illness, traditional Chinese medicine treats the individual on a case- bycase basis. A diagnosis is made based on the individual’s symptoms as well as their tongue and pulse presentations. The patient’s tongue is inspected and 6 pulses are felt on each wrist in order for the Acupuncturist/ Chinese Medical Practitioner to determine the diagnosis. Since chronic fatigue manifests differently in each person, this method of diagnosing is superior. The treatment plan is then formulated based on the individual’s diagnosis. As you can see in the chart- one Acupuncture treatment plan will address all of the individual’s symptoms as well as the illness as a whole. This is known as a root and branch treatment. Addressing the root cause of the chronic fatigue is addressing the illness as a whole while treating the branch aims to relieve all of the symptoms associated with the illness. Here’s why: The traditional objection against spending cuts is that they hurt demand (consumption), but this study shows that a reduction in spending actually increases consumption in the short run and into the long run.

That’s because, in the same way people tend to increase their savings during a recession due to fear of the future, consumers also consider the long-term tax implications of

today’s spending measures. They’ll increase their spending and investment habits in anticipation of future tax cuts -or, at the very least, no future tax hikes. The result is that the growth in output resulting from the spending restraint is driven primarily by consumption, which should be politically salient. The authors, however, also highlight that, as expected, investment reacts positively in the long run.

At a time when flawed arguments for more government spending and more debt are reemerging, this paper goes against the big government status quo and offers a

blueprint for us to not only regain control of our spiraling debt but also do so in a way that will boost short- and longterm economic growth by boosting demand and then investment.

Sewing for a Change: Meet 10 Year Old Sophia Honda

By Megan Roche ophia Honda’s interest in sewing came innocently enough. Honda wanted to create her own dress for her local Daddy/Daughter dance. Mom Mayumi immediately put her in sewing classes, loving the ideas that Sophia had.

After making her dress for the Daddy/ Daughter dance, Sophia’s passion for sewing only grew.

At 10 years old, Sophia, a fifth grader at Chester M. Stephens School, wanted to help make a difference when COVID-19 first impacted the US. When COVID first took it’s hold, Sophia sewed masks and donated them to Dress For Success, Northern New Jersey for their annual pop up sale.

“Fabiana Savaresi is the person who taught Sophia everything she knows about sewing and is the person responsible for her ‘journey’ thus far,” Mayumi said.

Since that time, Sophia’s passion for sewing has not stopped. At 10 years old, Sophia opened her own business to create masks. NAMI, by Sophia Honda, has

sold over 70 masks in two weeks. Overwhelmed, Sophia decided to donate her earnings to the Mount Olive community food pantry.

“Sophia has sold over 70 masks in less than 2 months and she was so overwhelmed by the response that she wanted to give back all the generosity from everyone that bought her masks to the community donating $70.00.” Mayumi shared.

In addition to the masks, Sophia also makes matching lanyards to hold the masks when they are not being used. Hackettstown Resident Recalls His Childhood, Now Helps Others

By Steve Sears 9-year-old Dan Jantzen has owned Hackettstown’s NJ Ronin Jiu Jitsu and Striking Academy since 2017.

This is more than a story about business ownership, more than the sport of Jiu Jitsu. It’s about survival, service, and care for others.

“My father left when I was a baby. I was lucky enough to have a step-father, but it still affected me greatly,” says Jantzen, explaining his background. “I also ended up becoming a teen father which had some affects as well. If I had found martial arts sooner. I may have been able to avoid some of the crowds I ran with and some of the mistakes I made. I hope to help other kids avoid the same pitfalls I did.”

He is doing just that. All of the above helped him to understand the importance of guidance in a young person’s life, especially his own children. “I wanted to be there for my kids. I didn’t want them to have that feeling of longing for a parent.”

At NJ Ronin Jiu Jitsu and Striking Academy, Jantzen and his team teach kids a combination of Jiu Jitsu and Striking techniques to help them become more active and confident in their abilities. There’s that educa-

tion, and then there’s this. “If I know a single parent household kid, I will always encourage the parent to bring them in to train.

If they can’t afford to train, I will typically try and work it out so that they can participate.” Jantzen also adds that he works with local group homes to give troubled kids jobs around the academy. “We have found that these kids are completely different when pulled out of that environment,” he states.

“Once given a good opportunity and some positive reinforcement they really seem to thrive. I also provide them with free training and guidance.”

Per Jantzen, Martial Arts can help people in so many ways. “It can help build confidence, keep kids active and fit, teach focus, and so much more. It’s a space where you can relieve stress. Sometimes their home situation isn’t the best, or they are stressed out in school. They can come here and be encouraged and motivated to overcome pressure on and off the mats.”

Jantzen, who attends services at Mount Olive’s Mountaintop Church, says faith plays a role in his life. “It plays a huge part.

Long Valley Fire Company Soon to Enter 100th Year

By Steve Sears he Long Valley Fire Company was established in 1921, and that in a few months calls for a special birthday party.

However, the beginning of the company actually had its roots ten years earlier.

Peter Griese is Fire Chief of the Long Valley Fire Company. “In 1911, it was still German Valley, up until 1918,” he says, referring to Long Valley’s original name. “They changed over (to Long Valley) with the rest of the town in 1918. In 1921, they got the official incorporation with the state to become a company.”

The Long Valley Fire Company is part of the Washington Township Fire Department, which also includes Fairmount Fire Company and Schooley’s Mountain Fire Company, all three potentially covering an area of approximately forty-five square miles.

It was the fall of 1911 when a group of men met in the German Valley railroad station and organized a small and humble fire company. A hand bell served as the first fire alarm, where someone would run up and down the street ringing the bell when a fire happened. There were no fire trucks, so firemen would carry buckets of water –

known as the “Bucket Brigade” - to extinguish the fire. The German Valley Woman’s Club in early 1915 donated a chemical wagon to the company, so it had its first piece of apparatus.

Griese elaborates on the timeline. “As far as I can tell from a lot of the older guys who are former members, a lot of family have come through. Again, from 1911 to 1921, it was the only fire company in town. The town was extremely large, mostly farms, and most of the members were farmers in town. They (former members) talk about the old days when the siren would go off and guys would get off their tractors, drive down to the fire house, and get on the apparatus.” Long Valley Fire Company served the entire town until Fairmount Fire Company formed in the late 1940s, and in the early 1950s Schooley’s Mountain Fire Company. “The population was much smaller – 5,000 people, if that. In the ‘20s’ it was probably 3,000. Not a lot of population, not a lot of buildings, other than farms and manufacturing. It was just a big, old rural community.” Discussed often are the barn fires, the O’Dowd Dairy Farm fires of the 1940s and 1950s, and when a church burned down in the center of town in the

1950s post-renovation. “In an overnight fire it was destroyed,” says Griese.

In addition to fighting fires, Long Valley Fire Company serves the community in other ways. “We probably have 25 people on our roster, and we have a core group of around 20 that show up for everything,”

Project EnAble: Don’t Look at the Label, See the ABLE

By Dawn M. Chiossi ount Olive’s 16-year-old ​Siya Kulkarni sees the faces of the people behind Autism Spectrum Disorder, not just the condition. For her, the passion for autism awareness stems from a personal connection she’s had ever since she was five years old: the brother of a friend.

It began when she was in India visiting her grandmother during the summers and making friends with the girl who lived next door. As much as they enjoyed playing together, there was a rule that they could ​only​ play at Siya’s grandmother’s house. Siya found out the reason for this rule just two years ago; her friend’s brother had autism.

He was not allowed to leave their house because his parents were afraid that he would be harassed, abused, and mistreated. He didn’t even attend school. What’s more, Siya’s friend never even mentioned him.

Knowing how isolated, frustrated, and utterly lonely the boy must have felt, Kulkarni says candidly, “I was shocked. It made me so sad. I never wanted another kid to feel that way.”

When returning to the United States,​ Siya instinctively knew that she had to be an advocate for children on the spectrum,

to eradicate the stigmas about them. ​That’s when she began​ Project EnAble, her Girl Scout Gold Award Project. Girl Scout Gold Award Projects are the highest achievement the Girl Scouts can receive, and their projects must be something that makes an impact for change.

Creating empathy and understanding about autism, especially for those not on the spectrum, Project EnAble focuses on changing perceptions. By education, inclusion, and acceptance, the project makes an inclusive environment for all.

The key was getting to all children early. ​“No matter how hard I researched, I couldn’t locate educational resources for individuals who weren’t on the spectrum to learn about autism. Especially children. ​​I recognized that this key population was not getting the education they needed,” Kulkarni explains. ​“Children aren’t born with a bias towards anyone; rather it is the lack of exposure that can cause hesitation to interact with a certain group of individuals for the fear of the unknown. Project EnAble is about diminishing that fear so that children can affect their own change and promote kindness towards those who are on the spectrum.”

Accepting that change is inevitable and

can be harnessed for the better, Kulkarni’s project stresses that everyone is unique and different. “Being inclusive is a skill that once fostered can spread and be maintained for the rest of someone’s life,” she enthuses.

Over the last two years, this impressive project has touched over 52,000 lives and counting. Circulated all over the Mount Olive School District, younger Girl Scout troops, temples, Sunday schools, and vari-

Project EnAble... continued from page 14 for driven teenagers to use Project EnAble resources and spread the outreach of the program. Kulkarni also made Project EnAble virtual, so autism awareness is just a click away.

The interactive game is both intriguing and empathetic: It features questions that ask the audience what they would do in certain scenarios around someone who has autism. Putting them in the shoes of that person, they are required to stimulate their thinking and mindsets. “The game forces players to think about these autistic kids. It clears up their fear, creates connection.”

The result is obvious; children with special needs are not rare or strange; they just want what everyone else wants: to be accepted.

Working closely with Mount Olive’s ​Sharon Staszak, Supervisor of Special Education in the school district, her project advisor, ​Margarita Malave, and a whole team, Kulkarni is awed by the whole experience.

“It has been phenomenal,” she says. “After the implementation of Project EnAble at one of the schools in New Jersey, one of the young girls in the audience whose older

sister was on the spectrum came up to me afterward and pulled me aside. She simply looked at me with wide eyes and whispered, “Thank you.” For the first time, she felt that her voice was heard.”

The result was a full-circle moment for Kulkarni. “I realized that what I had initially set out to do- acting as an advocate for my friend’s brother in India - was having an impact halfway across the world, in my own community. This project was enabling change so that children on the spectrum were no longer just looked at, but ​seen​.”

“Project EnAble is so much more than a Girl Scout Project,” Kulkarni prides, “It’s a testament to the incredible people on the spectrum. It strives to help others see that despite our differences, we are all human beings. At the end of the day, we all eat, sleep, breathe, and laugh. Autism doesn’t have to hide in the depths of the unknown.

By educating our communities, Project EnAble helps them discover a new mindset and can help them see past a person’s label to recognize their able.”

Budd Lake 5-Year-Old Carries on Family Success in Pageants

By Steve Sears he Van Dine children of the Budd Lake section of Mount Olive have made it a habit of entering and being successful in pageants.

“We’ve been doing pageants with my other children since they (Ashley and Alyssa) were little,” says Elsia Van Dine, mom of the two girls, who came out on the winning end in many of those they entered.

Enter 5-year-old little brother, Lorenzo (better known as Renni Kasper), who himself is now garnering success in pageants. “He’s been doing pageants since he was about 8 months old,” says Van Dine.

Renni’s latest win was the Secaucus, New Jersey-held “Emerald’s Beauty Fun in the Sun” pageant. He competed in Beauty and Swimwear categories and won Supreme King over all other contestants. Only 32 contestants took part, COVID19 the reason for the limited number, which normally can climb to as much as 100.

Per Van Dine, her son “Loves it” when he enters another pageant. “He loves doing it and he enjoys it, and he’s trying to save for college with money (from his wins), so we’re putting it away.”

For Renni, who also tap dances, plays soccer and baseball, does karate, and is a member of the Little Gym, his success is astounding. He has competed in 18 pageants, winning all but one. He has won roughly $600 in cash, as continued on page 17

Renni’s taking part in the national pageant competition was canceled this year, and the Van Dine family also entered the oft-winner in a July/August 2020 international competition.

COVID19 forced the former to a virtual setup which Renni did not take part in, and he was unable to attend the latter. For now, Renni’s next plans are on entering an October 2020 pageant with a Halloween theme, “Emerald’s Beauty Spooktacular.”

Christ Episcopal Church Calls Budd Lake Home, But Its Beginnings are in Stanhope

By Steve Sears wo years ago, Christ Episcopal Church celebrated its 25th year in the Budd Lake section of Mount Olive. But prior to 1993, for 128 years its home was in Stanhope.

“The four acres at the corner of Sand Shore and Smithtown Roads were donated to the Episcopal Diocese of Newark in the late 1980s just as the area was undergoing extensive residential development,” explains Ray Bonker, church Treasurer and AGC (All God’s Children) worship coordinator. “The Diocese approached our church in Stanhope and asked us to consider moving to Mount Olive because Budd Lake was growing rapidly, and this corner lot had been donated to the Diocese.” The congregation agreed to sell the Stanhope church to a Vietnamese Buddhist Temple group, and then spent several years worshipping in the Sandshore Elementary School on Sunday mornings while the current church building was constructed. “We wanted to raise our profile in the community and establish our church as a bright shining light upon the hill.”

Originally organized as a Mission in 1865, the church was promoted to Parish status in 1981. “We are very proud of our Stanhope roots,” says Bonker, who adds that several members who attended services at the former location now do so in Budd Lake.

The Rev. Elizabeth Myers has served as Priest in Residence since July 2018, but Christ Episcopal Church is in the process of calling a new priest to lead the congregation. “We are excited to see where our journey as a faith organization will take us as a new priest helps us to accelerate our impact within the Mt. Olive community,” says Bonker.

The average Sunday attendance is about twenty people, with an overall membership of approximately 50. Although tiny, Christ Episcopal Church does its best to give back to the community in a huge way. Consider, for example, the Mount Olive Food Pantry, a joint outreach effort with the other township churches. “The Pantry is open three days per week and serves anyone in need in Mount Olive,” says Bonker. “The Food Pantry has grown significantly since it was housed within our church building starting

in 2014. Especially now during the pandemic, our church has granted the Food Pantry use of the entire downstairs to make enough room available for the increased

Christ Episcopal Church also provides a home for two different AA groups, which meet every weekday (although currently these groups are meeting virtually due to the pandemic.) “Much like the Food Pantry,” says Bonker, “we started very small by hosting a single AA group of four people once or twice a week, and over the years it grew to include an average of 40 people every weekday.” The parish also reaches out to the special needs community within the

area, provides a friendly worship service called All God’s Children twice a month on the first and third Sundays for families with children that have autism, ADHD, Downs Syndrome or any other special need, and offers a monthly meeting place for groups in the community that provide services to young adults and adults with special needs.

“Jesus commands us to ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself,’” says Bonker, alluding to

Chubb Park Courts Renovated - Tennis and Pickleball Now Open for Use

fter several months of being closed for renovations, the tennis court at Chubb Park warmly welcomes the public to come and play ball. Only now, users can choose to play tennis OR pickleball on the brand new smooth blue surfaces - one regulation tennis court and two dedicated courts designed for pickleball.

Pickleball is similar to tennis, but has its own equipment, rules and scoring system. According to the USA Pickleball Association, it is played with a paddle and plastic wiffle-like ball on a badminton-sized court. It combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong.

The project engineer was the firm of Keller and Kirkpatrick from Morris Plains, NJ. The contractor was Classic Turf Company from Woodbury, CT, a company that specializes in post-tension concrete construction. This type of construction is relatively new for public tennis courts and offers a 20 year warranty for the base court.

Chester Township Councilman Mike Inganamort, liaison to the Parks Committee, is pleased with the new courts. “We’re happy that this project was completed in time for summer and fall enjoyment, and are confident that the selection of post-tension concrete construction will ensure a long-lasting surface for the courts.”

Chester has a local pickleball group whose members meet regularly at the Grove Street Park courts, and now the Chubb Park courts. Member Steve Jones says, “It’s a great strategic game that keeps you sharp, provides good

exercise and is a bit easier on the knees than tennis.”

I Remember Dad:

By Richard Mabey Jr. here are moments in our lives where a single, solitary, seemingly mundane event, transpires to become a most monumental and sacred accomplishment in time. Such was the evening, back in the Summer of 1943, when my dad wrote a letter to his grandmother, Dora Dolson Mabey.

Dad wrote his letter to his grandmother from his bed inside the barracks at Hickam Air Field during World War II. Back then, the men of the United States Army Air Corps wrote letters on very, very thin paper to save on the cost of mailing.

I was only six years old when my great grandmother went Home to be with the Lord. But I still remember her talking about the letters that Dad wrote to her, when Dad was serving in the Seventh Army Air Corps during World War II. And one letter in particular had a profound effect upon my great grandmother.

I guess I was about four or five years old, when we used to visit Great Grandma Mabey at the old Mabey Homestead, in her stately living room. We lived in Clifton at the time. And, as a young child, I found the Mabey Homestead to be a most fascinating

and enchanting place to visit. I had no idea, no clue, no indication that at the age of six, a most incredible and sacred turn of events would lead to the Mabey Homestead becoming my home for a long, long time.

Great Grandma Mabey had a rocking chair in her living room. She became a widow in 1936, at the age of 65, when my great grandfather, William Mabey, suffered a stroke and went Home to be with the Lord.

There was a loneliness that loomed deep in the eyes of Great Grandma Mabey.

In Dad’s legendary letter, that he wrote to his grandmother from Hickam Air Field, he shared with his grandmother, his heartfelt memories of his grandfather. Specifically, picking strawberries from Earl’s Meadow with his Grandpa. Of Dad walking down to the old Morris Canal with his grandfather.

And, very specifically, the time that Great Grandpa Mabey, Grandpa Mabey and Dad built the shed along Mabey Lane on Earl’s Meadow. It was a letter that my great grandmother dearly cherished.

I remember when I was seven years old and we were now living in the old Mabey Homestead. Dad let me climb the ladder to go into the attic with him. It was quite a big

deal for a kid to climb up the attic ladder with his dad. I remember Dad asked me to help him look for the letters that he had written to his grandmother, while he was in the Army Air Corps. Sadly, we never did find the letters.

What became of Dad’s letters to his grandmother is a great mystery, that at

times still haunts me. My great grandmother was a very organized person. She had a very sensitive and caring heart. It’s just odd that the letters were lost.

There was a part of my father that was a rugged, tough as nails, strong man. Dad was the long-distance truck driver, the continued on page 26

the letters that he had written to his grandmother. It makes me very sad that they had gotten lost. I would have loved to have read my father’s recollections of his childhood, written when he was a young man at Hickam Air Field.

Life isn’t always fair. I cherish my early childhood memories of Great Grandma Mabey sitting in her rocking chair, talking about Dad’s letters. It had a great affect upon me. I think it was a factor in my decision to become a writer. I remember how Dad’s letters had so deeply touched his grandmother. I realized then, at a very, very

age, the uplifting power of words.

In dreams, I often go back to the memory of visiting Great Grandma Mabey. Of her talking about the letters that Dad had written her. And, specifically one very special letter where Dad shared with his grandmother, the fond memories that he held in his heart for his grandfather. O’ to turn back the pages of the calendar, for even just a few hours.

Former Long Valley Resident Turned New York City Chef

By Megan Roche or Gabriel “Gabe” Maldonado, COVID-19 has brought many challenges, but has also helped to reignite his passion for the culinary arts. Maldonado, a Culinary Institute of America graduate, has been busy chopping, sautéing, and producing some major dishes in his New York City apartment.

“I grew up in a very large family, it started with my grandmother in the kitchen and I would love to help her. One of my very first things I did with her in the kitchen was mash garlic. For me, it was a way to connect to her. As I got older, we started going to a few nicer restaurants with my family and I got to see what hospitality really was. As I got interested in it, I realized it was one of the few things that I was really, really good at,” Maldonado shared.

Maldonado faced many challenges when the COVID-19 pandemic began. First, he was furloughed from his job; that came when New York City was ultimately shut down. Maldonado became frightened of what might come next. However, he turned to his first love, cooking, when things went south.

“It happened so quickly and a lot of people in the industry suffered from the lack of direction and constant go, go, go. I enjoyed the moment of breath for a few days, especially in the culinary field, I was working 10-12 hours a day. As the months went on though, I really found myself longing to go back to work and get back to giving people culinary experiences. For me, cooking has always been a way of showing my

love, and when I went to visit some family, I became kind of the caretaker of the house, so I jumped back into cooking very quickly,” Maldonado said.

Chef Maldonado has worked in some of the top restaurants in New York City. He has worked both in the kitchen and in the front of the house. He recently transitioned into a more managerial role, helping to hire and promote for a restaurant corporation.

He admits that while he wasn’t in the kitchen much, he’s never forgotten how much joy the environment brought him.

“When I was in high school, I didn’t realize how many options there were when it came to the culinary industry. It really started with me working in the kitchen. From there, I transitioned to front of the house as a server and a manager. After that, I moved into talent acquisitions with hiring sommeliers, chefs, and managers. There’s so many options in this field,” Maldonado shared.

Chef Gabe has been posting a number of videos of his delicious eats on his Instagram. He’s been getting quite creative, recent recipes include homemade Mole sauce, an Arabian and North African inspired Shakshuka, vegan pesto sauce, and ceviche, among others. What advice does Maldonado have for those who may be looking to get a little creative in the kitchen during quarantine? He suggests making sure to have the essentials before even beginning.

Humor Columnist Laverne Bardy Releases New Collection

n a time where we could all use a few laughs comes “Driving Backwards on a One-Way Street: A Savvy Senior’s Map to Finding Humor in Everything,” from the irreverent mind of New Jersey humor columnist Laverne H. Bardy.

It was early on, while the children were all in school, and I was sitting with a group of friends around my kitchen table, that I realized each of the stories we were relating were similar. And, they were funny.”

At the time, she was in charge of a PTA newsletter at her children’s school, so she began cataloguing everyday, relatable events and putting her unique touch to them.

Eventually she submitted a few columns to a local newspaper. They were accepted and her “career” as a columnist officially began. Decades later, she’s still at it.

“I can’t imagine ever starting a day without paying a visit to my office, sitting in front of my computer, and writing something. Anything,” she said of her passion.

“Writing is one of few occupations that a person can continue doing clear into senility.”

Don’t cook on cold pans or your food is not going to be seared and have that crispy flavor. Always have a sharp knife, one of the worst things you can do is cut with a dull knife. You will either cut yourself or your slices will be crooked. Third, is mise en place. Mise en place means everything in its place. Basically, just have all your ingredients out and ready to go so when you begin to cook, you know where everything is,” Maldonado says.

Has COVID been great?

Absolutely not, but for Maldonado, he’s thankful to the pandemic for reminding him of his first love.

“At one point, just a

short time ago, I wanted nothing to do with cooking in the kitchen. This period of time has reminded me that the culinary industry is not small. This world is about growing and learning about yourself and the business. The ability to teach people how to cook for themselves, while staying

sustainable-friendly, is so important to me.

I want to use this quarantine experience as a way of change for the culinary industry,” Maldonado says.

Common Home Emergencies, and How to Prevent Them

orothy Gale said “there’s no place like home” in “The Wizard of Oz.” But what about when homes are no longer safe?

Household emergencies can occur at any time. When disaster strikes, knowing how to proceed effectively can make a world of difference and potentially save lives. Fortunately it’s easy to prevent or reduce a wide range of household dangers by embracing some simple safety measures.

• Accidental falls: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that accidental falls are the leading cause of nonfatal injury among nearly every age group. Roughly three million adults age 65 and older experience falls that result in emergency room visits each year in the United States. Falls can be prevented by removing tripping hazards, installing steady handrails and other supports and adding lighting in and around a home. If a fall should occur, stabilize the limb or injured area of the body and seek medical assistance.

• Kitchen fires: The potential for danger exists whenever cooking with heat or over open flames. Kitchen fires may occur, but they don’t have to spread or cause serious issues if fast action is taken. Never use water to put out a grease fire — it will only spread it and make it worse. Cover the fire with a lid to suffocate the flames, or use baking soda to douse the fire. Always have an all-purpose fire extinguisher on hand, and know how to operate it.

Turn off the main to save the home and your wallet. Make the water main visible, mark which way is off, and instruct others in the house on how to use it.

• Tipping furniture: Tip-over incidents send thousands of people (especially young children) to emergency rooms each year, says the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. Top-heavy items, like dressers, TV stands and televisions, bureaus, and bookcases should be anchored to the wall.

• Unintentional poisoning: People may inadvertently consume household poisons. State Farm advises calling 9-1-1 if the victim is unconscious or not breathing. If the person is alert, consult with the American Association of Poison Control Centers at 1-800-222-1222 (or the Ontario Poison Centre at 1-800-268-9017) and await instructions.

Keep the bottle or packaging of the assumed poison on hand and be prepared to discuss symptoms and personal information about the victim.

• Fire or other danger: No one ever thinks an emergency situation necessitating escape from the home will take place. But to play it safe, residents should designate emergency exits that are the quickest and safest ways out of every room in the house. Practice this plan and pick a specific meeting spot outside.

Safety at home involves knowing how to act fast in an emergency and how to reduce your risk of being in potentially dangerous situations.

Chiropractors Can Help with Various Ailments

nyone who has experienced pain understands that it can be debilitating. Pain can make it challenging to manage everyday tasks and can affect relationships and physical and mental health in many ways. Pain medications were once the norm, but with the rise of the opioid epidemic, it may be wise to take a different approach to pain treatment.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the United States Department of Health and Human Services reveal that as many as one in five people received prescription opioids long-term for noncancer pain in primary care settings in 2016. While opioid use for pain does not always lead to abuse of these medications, opioid addiction has become a widespread problem across North America. These same agencies report that approximately 1,000 people are treated in emergency departments in the United States each day for misuse of prescription opioids.

Between 2016 and 2017, opioid poisoning hospitalization rates went up by 8 percent in Canada, resulting in an average of 17 hospitalizations each day.

Chiropractic care may be one avenue to pursue as a viable alternative to pain medications. While chiropractic manipulations are most often associated with back and neck pain, there are many different benefits — some of which may surprise those unfamiliar with chiropractic care — for this type of care.

• Migraines and headaches: Research shows that spinal manipulation can be an effective way to treat migraines, tension headaches and headaches that begin in the neck.

In clinical trials conducted at Macquarie University, 72 percent of migraine sufferers had noticeable or substantial improvement after a period of chiropractic treatment.

• Accident injuries: Chiropractors can assess musculoskeletal anomalies caused by motor vehicle accidents as well as slips and falls. Whiplash is a common issue in car crashes, and this may be addressed by a chiropractor.

• Anxiety and stress: The fight or flight mechanism that is activated when a person experiences stress and anxiety can take its toll on various parts of the body. Because stress involves nerve impulses, chiropractors may be able to work primarily with the spine where these impulses originate to help release tension and nerve irritation. In addition, adjustments can improve blood circulation, which may help signal the brain to turn off its “rally to action” response to stressful situations.

• Fibromyalgia: Fibromyalgia is marked by widespread musculoskeletal pain in the joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. It can be combined with temporomandibular joint syndrome, or TMJ, as well as irritable bowel syndrome, among other illnesses. Chiropractors can remove subluxations, which are misalignments of the vertebrae in the spine and joints that lead to pain responses. A Florida State University study found that those with fibromyalgia who combined resistance training with chiropractic treatment two times a week saw improvements in their symptoms.

Chiropractic care may be an asset for pain management, as well as a way to improve overall health.

POW/MIA/PTSD Ascension Bell Tower Dedicated at Turkey Brook Park

By Steve Sears new Ascension Bell Tower was dedicated at Mount Olive’s Turkey Brook Park All Veteran’s Memorial Grounds site on Saturday, September 5.

The site, which is in its 15th year, was founded by Charlie Uhrmann.

The event started at 11:30 a.m. and ended at 2:30 p.m.

“It is New Jersey’s premiere memorial now,” says Uhrmann of the site. “It is 1.3 acres of different monuments, and it keeps getting better and better.” Urhmann and her group had decided that, during their front end event of the 24-hour POW/MIA vigil (which is held the third week of September), the American Legion would come and recite the names of the POWs and MIAs, and it was mentioned to Uhrmann that it would be nice if a bell was rung after recitation of names.

However, Uhrmann didn’t just want an average looking bell at the monument. “It just didn’t have enough impact,” she says. For a few years, she contemplated having something additional built for the site. One day, she looked at the POW/MIA flag and said, ‘That’s it.

We’re going to build a guard tower – replicate a guard tower – and then we’ll put a four-sided bell inside that guard tower.’ It’s 11’ high, about 54” between each one of the legs, and inside as a four-sided, stainless steel bell that has various tones.” The POW/MIA logo is on the front of the bell, and the other three sides are inscribed POW, MIA, and PTSD. The different tones from each side represent the individual’s name, rank, serial number, and war engaged in.

Half the Fun is Getting There

By Laverne H. Bardy ur plane was scheduled to take off momentarily. My cousin and I stood at the airline counter and presented proof of who we are. I showed the photo on my license. Phyllis had a passport.

The airline attendant looked at Phyllis’ passport, then at Phyllis, then back at the passport.

“This picture doesn’t look like you,” she snarled.

Wise-guy that I am I said, “Oh, pulleeease, nobody looks like their passport picture, thank goodness.”

“No,” she grunted. “This doesn’t look like you.”

She held up the passport. By George, she was right. The picture looked nothing like Phyllis, because she’d brought her husband’s passport by mistake.

Phillis and I doubled over with laughter, but stopped abruptly when the attendant informed us Phyllis could not enter the plane without photo identification. Me swearing that she really was Phyllis didn’t alter her decision.

Sweat formed on Phyllis’ forehead as she foraged through her purse, and came up with her Costco photo ID card. The attendant squinted, examined the picture, then waved us through, which neither

of us understood because her husband’s passport picture looked more like Phyllis than her Costco photograph.

Because ours were last minute reservations we were stuck in the last row, next to the rest rooms. The seats were tight and didn’t lean back. My knees narrowly missed touching my nose. It was hot.

Suddenly, I didn’t feel well. I told Phyllis I needed to remove my tight, restricting bra or I was going to be sick. I asked her to cover me.

I had the window seat; Phyllis was on the aisle. She looked around and said all was clear.

I leaned as far forward as I could – which wasn’t far considering how close my seat was to the one in front of me – and unhooked my bra. Then, I worked magic in the most discrete way possible as I reached into the jacket’s sleeves, and bent each elbow in a way that allowed me to slip my bra straps over them. Once my shoulders were free, I reached under the front of my jacket and pulled the bra out.

A pretty smooth operation, if I do say so.

Suddenly Phyllis, who had been standing in the aisle, concealing me from other passengers, fell over her seat and laughed so hard and for so long she was unable to catch her breath. The flight attendant

came by and asked if there was something she could do, but Phyllis was incoherent.

Our goal had been to avoid attention, but instead we’d become the center of attraction. Everyone was looking. Everyone, while Phyllis continued laughing.

Finally, gasping, she gathered her wits.

“A man was behind me, in the out-cove between the restrooms. He must have been in the restroom when you began your strip, and came out in time to enjoy your entire act. By the time I realized he was there, your puppies had already been freed.”

I was mortified. I wanted to fall through a hole in the plane. But, suddenly, I rethought the situation. I wasn’t going to let it bother me. I had done this man a service. Because of me he had a great story to share with his buddies; one I was certain he would embellish.

In the meantime, I couldn’t figure out how to leave the plane without him seeing me. Then I realized he probably never saw my face.

I had purchased an Easy-Pass ticket Online. When I arrived at the airport I brought my ticket to an Easy-Pass check-in machine and answered the prompted questions.

One question stumped me so I asked a desk attendant for assistance. She requested identification. I reached under the top

of my scoop neck blouse and whipped out my license and credit card, where I’d filed them for easy access.

The attendant laughed loudly, and informed all surrounding attendants of my efficient filing system. I enjoyed a laugh with them and left for the plane.

Ten minutes later, while in the Ladies Room I heard the following on the loud speaker: Will Laverne Bardy please return to the check-in counter for her license and credit card, on which she can expect to find several new charges for the Home Shopping Network?

Laughing all the way, I retrieved my card from the same woman who had assisted me a few moments earlier.

It was time to enter the plane. A male voice announced that passengers with an F or a B code on their tickets would be subject to security checks. I had neither an F or a B, but that same attendant was now continued on page 49

Meatless Cheesy Burrito Bake 2 tablespoons canola oil 2 bell peppers, sliced 1 medium onion, sliced 1 teaspoon cumin 2 cups water 1 cup brown rice, uncooked 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk, divided 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1 can (4 ounces) diced green chiles, undrained 1 can (16 ounces) refried beans 6 wheat tortillas (8 inches) salsa (optional) guacamole (optional) Heat oven to 350 F.

In large skillet, heat canola oil. Cook peppers, onion and cumin until tender.

In saucepan, add water and brown rice. Cook 45 minutes.

In saucepan, add 1 1/4

cups evaporated milk, shredded cheese and green chilies. Cook over medium heat until cheese is melted and smooth. Stir 3/4 cheese mixture in with rice; set remaining cheese sauce aside.

In medium bowl, add refried beans and remaining evaporated milk. Microwave 3-4 minutes.

Lay out tortillas and layer: refried bean mixture, rice mixture and pepper-on-

ion mixture. Roll into burritos and place in baking pan.

Top burritos with remaining cheese sauce. Bake 20-25 minutes.

Garnish with salsa and guacamole, if desired.

Eggs as a Nutrient-Rich ‘First Food’

E

ggs are for everyone, including babies and toddlers, according to the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee that released its Scientific Report outlining nutritional recommendations for Americans. For the first time, this committee, comprised of leading doctors and nutrition scientists, included nutritional guidance for younger children.

The committee recommends eggs as a first food for babies and toddlers since they provide eight essential nutrients that can help build a healthy foundation for life at a time when every bite counts.

Eggs provide nutrition for children and moms-to-be, as well. However, the report found most pregnant women and kids need more choline – an essential nutrient critical for brain health – in their diets.

According to research published in the “Journal of the American College of Nutrition,” 92% of pregnant women don’t get enough choline in their diets. Choosing foods high in choline, like eggs, can help pregnant women consume enough of this essential nutrient, helping a baby’s brain

and spinal cord develop properly. Just two eggs provide more than half of the recommended daily amount of choline.

At only 70 calories, one egg contains 6 grams of high-quality protein and all nine essential amino acids. Eggs are also a source of vitamin B12, biotin (B7), iodine, selenium, high-quality protein, riboflavin (B2) and pantothenic acid (B5). Additionally, eggs contain lutein and zeaxanthin that can help protect your eyes from harmful blue light that comes from electronic devices.

The committee recommends introducing eggs when your baby is ready for first foods, which may help reduce the chances of developing an egg allergy.

In Your Kitchen Eggs are a nutritional powerhouse that contribute to health and well-being at every age, and there are plenty of ways to enjoy eggs beyond the basic boiled, scrambled or sunny-side-up. In fact, eggs work well in meals all day long. Toss hard-boiled eggs in a salad, top a sweet potato with an egg for lunch or try a spinach and mushroom frittata for dinner.

One simple way to introduce eggs as a first food is a soft and fluffy egg casserole.

Veggie Egg Casserole Recipe developed by Stacey Mattinson, RD Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 40 minutes Servings: 4 Nonstick cooking spray 1/2 sweet onion 1 red, yellow or orange bell pepper 1 head broccoli florets 2 teaspoons canola, avocado or olive oil 1 dozen eggs

2 cups low-fat cottage cheese 1 cup shredded cheese 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 tablespoon flour salt, to taste pepper, to taste Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease 9-by-13inch pan with nonstick cooking spray.

Chop onion and bell pepper to age-appropriate sizes. Pick apart broccoli florets into small pieces and remove most of stems.

Heat medium-sized frying pan over medium heat. Add oil and swirl around pan.

Add onions and cook 3-4 minutes until they start to soften. Add broccoli and bell pepper. Mix with onions and add salt and pepper, to taste. Cook 1-2 minutes then cover with lid to steam another 2-3 minutes until broccoli is bright green. Remove veggies from stovetop.

In large mixing bowl, beat eggs. Add cottage cheese, shredded cheese, baking powder and flour. Add veggies and salt and pepper, to taste. Transfer to prepared pan and bake 40 minutes.

2 tablespoons olive oil 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into 1-inch pieces 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped

1 package (5 ounces) semisoft cheese with garlic and fine herbs 1 1/2 cups fat-free milk 1 tablespoon flour 1 teaspoon hot sauce 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 2 cups fresh baby spinach 1 cup quartered cherry tomatoes Cook macaroni according to package directions; drain.

Heat large skillet over medium-high heat. Add olive oil, chicken and onion.

Cook 6-8 minutes, or until chicken is no longer pink.

Reduce heat to medium. Stir in semisoft cheese. Gradually add milk and flour.

Continue stirring and cooking until mixture is thickened and bubbly.

Reduce heat to low. Add hot sauce, cheddar cheese and cooked macaroni.

By Steve Sears endra Goodwin (Allen), popular ice skater and ice dancer from the late 1990s and early to mid-2000s, never competed in an actual Olympic Games.

However, she has “lived it” through her husband Jeremy, he was a coach at the 2018 Olympics in South Korea. “I guess I got to live it vicariously through him,” she states with a chuckle, “so that was pretty cool. Just because my husband and I have this shared passion because he was a paired skater himself – we met through figure skating at the training center at the University of Delaware – and the rest is history. So, going to the Olympics, whether as a coach or as an athlete, that was just a huge moment for us as a family.”

Goodwin’s life has been rewarding. She has her family, her job as a high school Speech and Language Pathologist, and many rich memories of when she performed with some outstanding partners, they pairing their skating talents with hers to attain lofty heights.

The 37-year-old Goodwin has been married since 2010, and she and her husband have two children: 6-year-old daughter Kajsa, and a two-year-old son, David. “That’s what I’ve always wanted, a family,” she says.

“We all just love each other. That’s number one.” Her job is number two. “Working with adults with disabilities, I’m so thankful I attained my master’s degree and focused on school.” She did have to leave competitive ice dancing, but if she didn’t, she wouldn’t have been (in her words, complete). “There was something else

that I wanted in life other than figure skating. I’m very happy that I was successful in doing that.”

Goodwin was adopted after birth from Indonesia

by Tom and Cecilee Goodwin of Randolph. “I try to go home as much as I can,” says the Illinois-located Goodwin. Goodwin, who also has a sister, Anya, attended the University of Delaware, majored in Psychology, and minored in Linguistics, and received her Master’s in Speech Pathology from Northwestern University.

She teaches at Mundelein High School in Mundelein, Illinois.

Goodwin reflects with much gratitude about her younger days in Randolph. “I remember that it was a very safe community, very easy to walk around by myself – my best friend, Meredith and myself would spend hours outside and go to the beach right on our lake (Shongum Lake) and we’d just ride our bikes around for hours. Again, it was a very safe community; my parents never had to worry while we were out during the day.

I remember doing Indian Princesses with my Dad. Indian Princesses is probably one of my fondest memories with my Dad, where we were able to do the camping trips and go hiking together with their (her friends’) Dads, and that was very enjoyable.”

Her Mom and Dad started Goodwin and her sister off in group skating classes at Mennen Arena when she was 5 years old. “My parents supported us fully,” she says, “and you have to have a lot of commitment for the sport, so we did decide to eventually go with just

figure skating. I was doing dance as well as gymnastics, and then the figure skating all at one time, and we had to get to that point where we had to choose one.” Goodwin says that is one of the things she likes about her parents, is the fact that they exposed her to many things.

She now does the same for her own children. “I think because of that my parents were very supportive, putting everything into figure skating for us. Without that support, I never would have gone as far as I have gone.” Goodwin fondly recalls her Dad, suit on for work, driving her to early morning practices at 6 a.m., where she would skate for a couple of hours and then head to Center Grove Elementary School. “That was every morning for me,” she remembers. She also did camps and skating camps in Canada, Colorado, and Lake Placid.

In middle school she discovered ice dancing, which she describes as “Ballroom on ice.” “I started ice dancing with my coaches at Mennen Arena – Colleen O’Connor and John Powell – they really got me into the ice dance part of it. You’re going to be with somebody when you’re out there competing out on the ice. That’s what I liked: the idea of being out on the ice with somebody else, practicing with them and performing with them, and not just being alone out there.” She continues, “The ability to express, that is a huge thing in ice dance. I’m really very naturally introverted to be honest with you, and I think growing up with skating as a commitment kind of made it harder for me socially, so partnering was a huge social outlet for me where I was able to express artistically as well as socially, having somebody with me and learning that way.”

Goodwin’s initial two national pairings were with Paul Goldner and Ty Cockrum. Her Mom, seeking an ice dance partner for Kendra, sent her photo to all the coaches around the United States. “I tried out with Paul first and it went really well. We developed a partnership. I was a freshman, I believe, in middle school, and our Moms drove us everywhere. He was from New York and I was from New Jersey; his Mom would drive 45 minutes to an hour to meet us in New Jersey, and then vice-versa we would go up to New York.” Cockrum was a little further away – Seattle, Washington. “We went out there, and the trial went really well,” Goodwin says. “The coach was great, and my parents were willing to give me the opportunity to let me move out to Seattle continued on page 44

NJ Stars: Kendra Goodwin... continued from page 43 when I was 16 (she was a high school junior) to pursue ice dancing with Ty.” It was a culture change for her. “Not the typical teenage life,” she says with a laugh. “I grew up really quickly.”

Goodwin’s greatest success came with partner Chris Obzansky. Competing in the junior level, the duo captured 1st place in the 2000 Junior Grand Prix event in China, and they were also the 2001 United States Junior National silver medalists, and also finished 15th at the 2001 World Junior Figure Skating Championships. It was quite a run of success, and then the partnership bond was broken when Obzansky chose to serve as a Mormon missionary. “It was huge,” she says of their parting. “It really opened up my eyes to understanding his faith, in general just understanding the commitment involved.

Not only did Chris have figure skating, but he also had his faith and religion, and I had to respect that. I couldn’t be mad at him for anything about it. I was very upset, but this was something that he felt he needed to do at that moment and time, and it was hard – it was definitely a challenge for me because of the sacrifices I had made with moving around, with moving to Delaware to skate with Chris. There’s a lot of sacrifice that goes into this sport, and a lot of times the girls sacrifice more so than the boys, because there are more girls that are looking for partners than boys. I felt like we were at a pivotal moment in our career, but there was nothing I could’ve done about it. It was something Chris really wanted, and I had to support that.”

“At that time, we really could’ve been a very strong team nationally and internationally as we grew up if we had had a longer partnership.”

News spread of Goodwin’s seeking a new partner, and she found one in Brent Bom-

mentre, whose close proximity to Goodwin’s Delaware (he was in Philadelphia) was perfect. And that wasn’t all. “I think our personalities really went well together,” Goodwin says. “Brent is very personable, he’s very friendly, very outgoing, very funny. I really appreciate humor, so there was a lot of laughing in our partnership.” And serious skating as well. The team won a pewter medal at the 2004 United States Championships and also took part in 2004 Skate America and the 2004 Cup of Russia. “I felt like it was a very positive experience with Brent.”

The partnership disbanded early in 2005, and Obzansky rejoined Goodwin on the ice for the rest of 2005 and 2006, and then Bommentre was back in 2008. “I feel like I really grew a lot through those partnerships,” she says, “even though there were many of them.” Her parents were fonts of wisdom once more, telling her that from each partnership she’d learn something new, and the same thing with the coaches. “I really like that philosophy of not being fearful and just giving it a try and doing the best you can under those circumstances.”

Goodwin still occasionally laces on her skates. “I do – yes, I do,” she says with glee.

“I work very part-time and I do have a couple of students that I work with.”

Although inspired by fellow skaters in her life, her parents are tops to her. “Especially now that I am a parent, just looking back at everything that they did for me and for skating, and the trust that they must’ve had (for me) as a teenager moving out to Seattle on my own, I think that really promoted that hard work ethic and that really supported the belief in me and gave me more confidence. They trusted me and respected that and they knew I was going to be responsible and make good decisions. Because of that, I grew as much as I did.”

A Guide to Female Health When Returning to Campus

ow that class is in session, early fall is a great time to focus on gynecological care. A gynecologist is a doctor that specializes in women’s health and reproductive capabilities. Below is a list of the services that gynecologists can provide to college age women returning to school.

Birth control: College is often the time that women begin to take birth control for the first time. Health classes and information that is obtained through commercials and media about birth control fail to present the wide range of birth control options. Birth control pill usage is the most common type of birth control method that women use besides condoms. Most birth control pills are a combination of both estrogen and progesterone and must be taken daily to prevent pregnancy. For those women to whom oral contraception is contraindicated other longer acting methods such as progesterone injections, intrauterine devices and subdermal implants (Nexplanon) can be used instead. These longer acting methods have greater patient compliance as well as increased protection against pregnancy. Depending on your medical history, your gy-

necologist can prescribe a birth control method that best addresses your medical needs.

Menstrual cycle management: Women in their teenage years are known to have significantly more painful and longer lasting menstrual periods then they have at any other point in their life. By taking a detailed patient history and discussing the severity of symptoms a physician can often help a patient achieve a more manageable and less uncomfortable menstrual cycle. Many patients are surprised to learn that their cycles can be significantly improved. Cyclic NSAID usage and hormonal contraception are two methods that assist patients with their uncomfortable menstrual cycles.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening: According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists “By grade 12, more then one half of females report having had sexual intercourse”. Unfortunately, many cases of STI’s are asymptomatic and this makes routine yearly screening absolutely essential for adequate health and maintenance. Bacterial infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea can present long term health risks if they are

allowed to go untreated for large periods of time. In addition, a gynecologist can discuss with the patient safer sex practices and ways to decrease the spread of STI’s in general.

Vaccinations: The HPV vaccine is one of the most effective vaccinations that is currently offered in the US. Human Papillomavirus is a virus most commonly associated with cervical cancer and with genital warts. The vaccine is offered to men and women from 9 years- 27 years old or younger to prevent the spread of HPV in the vaccinated individual and decrease both rates of cervical cancer and genital warts. The HPV vaccination is recommended to all women regardless of their sexual orientation. The time before a woman goes to college can be an excellent time for an HPV vaccination series. Most gynecologist offices have the HPV vaccines supplied in their office and would be happy to assist you with this.

Millburn Resident Selflessly Spearheads Town-wide Initiative to Make Masks

By Jillian Risberg hen COVID-19 hit, Carisa Reilly knew she didn’t want to sit idly doing nothing. So the real estate broker and mom of three transformed into the powerhouse ‘Mask Lady.’

It all started with an email chat on Millburn/Short Hills WorkMom group, where several healthcare professionals mentioned they were desperate for masks. “And somebody said, ‘Can’t we just make these’ and Reilly said, ‘Oh my Gosh, yes.’”

So they started researching CDC-approved patterns and materials.

“There was a suggestion to put an extra filter in the mask,” says the real estate broker. “Like when you make the mask for nurses and hospital staff it needs to be more than just fabric and they really like to use those Swiffer (dry dust cloths) ‘cause they are electrostatic, so that’s what we did.”

“I literally bought the town out of Swiffer,” she says. “People donated hundreds of Swiffers, fabric and elastic and I found nose guards that I could put in.”

David Merdinger, who owns a wholesale fabric supply (NJ Textiles) generously supplied them with hundreds of yards of fabric and elastic for masks and scrub caps, according to Reilly.

“We could not have done this without him,” she says. “He truly made all the difference.”

It was Merdinger’s wife who forwarded him Carisa’s email detailing what she was doing and he jumped right in.

“I saw it as an opportunity to help her, our community and our local hospitals,” he says. “I’m glad I was able to do my share. We have to thank Carisa for coordinating all the facets of this remarkable project.”

Several people in town had sewing machines but didn’t know how to use them.

“So we tried to organize, if you don’t know how to sew — donate fabric, cut fabric and elastic, assemble the pieces,” Reilly says. “It became very quickly a cottage industry, it was like managing a small factory remotely.”

That meant the real estate broker constructed the masks anywhere she could — in her basement, garage, bedroom, living room.

And she had help from her twin daughters, Madeline and Abigail and many devoted volunteers. The group collectively called themselves The Mask Makers for NJ Workers, continued on page 48

She says she doesn’t really feel safe.

“It’s still kind of dangerous to go out and stuff,” the 16-year-old says, with The Mask Lady adding that they’ve tried to be pretty careful.

“It’s been hard for everybody but especially for kids it’s really changed their lives,” Reilly says.

By the end of March, early April she realized they’ve got to employ seamstresses because trying to produce 50/masks a day on their own wasn’t going to cut it and there were healthcare workers who urgent-

ly needed them.

She reached out to Millburn Mayor Jackie Lieberberg, who offered her invaluable support. Next step was to raise $2,400.

“I put in $600 of my own money,” the real estate broker says. “In a week we had about $5000 or $6,000. That enabled us to crank them out. The goal was 1,200 (masks) in seven days. We did 1,200 in like 14 days and just had to keep doing them.”

ple who need masks and it was still really hard to find them,” Reilly says. “So we had to develop a different kind of mask because what we were doing for healthcare workers was very protective but also quite hot to have three full layers on your face.”

She and the Mask Makers felt they needed to regroup.

“So we came up with a completely different design that was two layers of fabric, lightweight, much easier to make,” says The Mask Lady. “And it was really important to me and still is to source as much as we could locally.”

They have produced more than 3,000

masks and scrub caps thus far. And she is involved in a Millburn/Short Hills volunteer gardening project, one more way The Mask Lady is giving back and making a difference.

Looking ahead, the real estate broker is also planning to take part in an initiative on Alignable.com called #mymoneystayslocal, which involves being a leader in the community to encourage people to support local businesses and services whenever possible.

Items to Include in College Students’ Quarantine Bags

illions of parents dropped their children off on college campuses for the start of a new school year in August. While that might not stand out in a normal year, 2020 has proven to be anything but normal.

Many colleges and universities grappled with how to approach the 2020-21 academic year as the world continued to battle the COVID-19 outbreak. Some schools chose to offer only remote learning and keep kids off campus entirely, while others offered in person classes and welcomed students back to campus. Still others created hybrid learning plans that combined remote learning with in person sessions.

Regardless of which option schools ultimately chose, it’s fair to say that many recognized the potential that the pandemic could once again upset the academic apple cart after the semester began, forcing students and educators to adjust to fully remote learning in much the same way they did back in March. In addition to that potential outcome, students who returned to campus must be prepared to enter quarantine if they or a friend, classmate or roommate tests positive for COVID-19. In anticipation of that, it pays for students to prepare quarantine bags in case they need to isolate themselves at any point during the semester.

Clothing

Few college students have exclusive access to washers and dryers in their dorm rooms or apartments. Shared laundry rooms will likely be off limits while students are under quarantine, so make sure to pack enough clothing to get through two weeks of isolation. Take inventory of your supply of pajamas, underwear and socks and purchase more if necessary.

Food and cooking supplies College students accustomed to eating their meals at the dining hall food may need to prepare their own meals while in quarantine. Stock up on nonperishable items, such as pasta, soup, rice, and cereal, that can be stored in your room for long periods of time without expiring. Bottled water can help you stay hydrated should you feel ill, while decaffeinated tea can help you stay warm should you feel chills. Bring along a mini refrigerator, a toaster or toaster oven, a tea kettle, some pots and pans, bowls and plates, and utensils as well.

Medical supplies Extra masks are a must-have when returning to campus, and they can help students make it through quarantine as well.

Masks can be worn when using restrooms or showers, even if students are attending schools that plan to isolate people who test positive in buildings that cannot be accessed by non-infected community members.

In addition to extra masks, make sure you have enough daily medical supplies, such as toothpaste, shampoo, body lotion or soap, deodorant, tissues, and disinfectant, to last through quarantine, which is typically no less than two weeks.

Technology While in quarantine, students will want to stay connected to the outside world and parents will no doubt want to check in as often as possible to see how their children are

faring. A reliable laptop, desktop or tablet can ensure students can chat with family and friends and even stay up-to-date with their schoolwork via the Zoom conferencing app.

A backup phone charger also can make sure students stay connected throughout their quarantine period.
