A 9/11 World Trade Center Memorial is located in the Henry Hoebel Area of Overpeck Park next to Fort Lee Road in Leonia.

Following the attacks in which 64 people from Morris County perished, a committee was formed which included the family members of people who died, to help locate a site for the memorial, raise funding for its construction, and select a sculptor to design it. The Morris County 9/11 Me morial was constructed on county-owned property in 2003 and dedicated on September 10 of that same year during a candlelight vigil.

says Morris County Commissioner, Douglas Cabana. “Every bit of it symbolizes our grief for those lost, our resolve to con tinue living as a free nation and stand up to oppression, and our hope that future Americans will find a bright future. To this day, more than 20 years after the attacks, the memorial remains an important part of life here. Every week, Morris County tends to that memorial. We have people cleaning the walkways and the pool, replacing the flowers and wiping down the plaques. It is visited almost daily by residents and visitors from outside our county. We will never forget.”

The memorial is located at 460 West Hanover Avenue, at Morris County 9/11 Memorial Park.

Dedicated on September 10, 2013, it is comprised of a steel beam from the North Tower, and behind it is a rock with the dedication plaque with the names from the 30 Passaic County residents who died on 9/11. Bringing the beam down to the county and its placement was organized by County Commissioner Bruce James and at the time, the Director of the Police Academy, Bob Lyons. The rock with the plaque was donated by Sam Braen, owner of Braen Stone.

On Sunday, October 20, 2002, the Essex County Septem ber 11th Eagle Rock Memorial was dedicated and unveiled. Added in 2009 was the Flight Crew Memorial, a tribute to the pilots and flight attendants on the four airplanes that crashed that day, and in 2011, a 7,400-pound steel and con crete artifact from the World Trade Center site and a bronze plaque recognizing the heroism of EMS personnel was add ed. In 2016, the Essex County Search and Rescue Dog Stat ue was then dedicated at the site to commemorate the role that dogs had in the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center and Pentagon after the attacks.

So what is the cost of an abutment? It varies greatly. A fair range to put into an article such as this would be $500 to $1,000. Keep this in mind when you are getting quotes from your dentist or if you are interviewing multiple offices! You may not be comparing apples-to-apples.

al titanium cylinder that is placed into the jawbone. Using a crude term, this is the “screw.” The “crown” or “cap” is the tooth that you see when you smile in the mir ror: its your replacement tooth. However, to connect these two parts, you need the third component: this is the abutment. You can view a diagram of these three parts on my website: go to “For Patients,” then “Patient Education,” and look for the Information Sheet, “General Info Regard ing Dental Implants.”

Now that you are familiar with they type, the category, and the materials, how does your dentist select which is appropri ate for you? There are a lot of variables,

Dental Implants

There are two basic types of abutments: stock and custom. A stock abutment is pre-manufactured by implant companies, and it is taken off of a shelf to be used. A custom abutment is fully customized by the dental laboratories. Materials can also vary. The most common is titanium, but gold and zirconia are other options. The manufacturing process is also another variable: some are milled from a block of material, some are cast from wax patterns.

Dental implant abutments can be a con fusing topic. Let’s talk about a single im plant, which would replace a single tooth. There are 3 components: the implant or fixture, the crown or cap, and an “invisi ble” connector called an abutment. The “implant” or “fixture” is the actu

An implant in the top front of the mouth oftentimes requires a custom abut ment. The bone in this region is angled, and esthetics are critical. There is minimal room for error, and the “emergence pro file,” meaning how the tooth exits from the gum, is important. In the back of the mouth you can get away with a lot more. Although the emergence profile isn’t as important from an esthetic standpoint, it can be important from a functional stand point so that you don’t trap lots of food and have irritated gums.

In summary, although an abutment is a component you’ll never see, they are im portant. Your dentist needs to choose the type of abutment that’s going to get the job done properly for you to help provide proper esthetics and function.

The information above covers abut ments for single implants. There are other situations calling for dental implant abut

According to Warren County Fire Marshal Joseph Lake, Jr., a memorial committee member, the memorial is a place of peace and rememberance.

County Surrogate Frank Bruno was able to obtain a piece steel from the World Trade Center, which is a permanent part of the memorial. The design, featuring a clock tower which reads, “Time to Remember,” was developed by county staff artist Linda Brady. The concept was converted into architec tural drawings produced by The Musial Group of Mountain side. Construction was by Skinner & Cook of Roselle Park, and Michael Mills of Ford, Farewell, Mills & Gatsch in Princ eton provided advice on the design’s relationship to the his toric nature of the courthouse green, which is on the state and national historic registers.

“It gives the residents of Warren County, particularly the ones who lost friends and loved ones, a place to go to and remember.”

The Warren County Emergency Services and 9/11 Memo rial site was dedicated in 2011, and the monument itself was completed for September 11, 2012 in memory of the four Warren County residents who died on September 11, 2001.

lmost everyone has experienced a headache, at some point in their life, to varying degrees. In fact, roughly 45 million Americans suffer from Head aches each year. In today’s world, most people reach into the medicine cabinet for one of the various pain relievers to alleviate their head pain. But what happens when that doesn’t work? Or, the headaches become more frequent and more painful? Some get headaches so often and so painful, they even take prescription drugs with side ef fects and no avail. But have you ever stopped to think, “What is causing my headache?” Headaches and more severe headaches, known as Migraines, can be caused by various triggers including foods, chemicals or preserva tives in foods, allergens in the environment, chemicals in cleaning products or herbicides/pesticides, sinus conges tion, tension in the neck or jaw, lack of sleep, dehydra tion, stress, and the list goes on… Sometimes the cause is completely unknown and with no relief the patient can be left hopeless, debilitated and in pain. The Hackettstown squad’s role in forming the Independence volunteer squad cannot be overstated. After training the Indepen dence volunteers in first aid, the Hackett stown squad house also advised them, in detail, on what specific pieces of equipment to carry with them in their ambulance, and safety precautions to always take into con sideration while on duty. For the time being, the township had the squad park its ambu lance in one of its garages on Barkers Mill Road. By July of 1972, the Independence squad had officially assumed full responsi bilities over its agreed-upon area. That same month, they responded to their first call.

Now in its 50th anniversary year, the squad can boast a paid staff that stands by and assists the volunteers that come in and out of the squad house with each changing shift. The squad is averaging about a 97% success rate on answering incoming emer

gency calls, at a rate of about 1,000 calls last year alone. The squad pays for its members’ training, and recently became a host agency for the NJ EMS Task Force.

Members of the Independence Volunteer Squad want readers to know that across the county, state, and even the country at large, EMS squads have taken an enormous finan cial hit as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The funding is simply no longer there, and in the state of New Jersey, EMS squads are not even considered “essential”, say, in com parison to fire and police services. Putting it plainly, EMS workers—and especially volun teer units—need all the help they can get, and it is in our best interest, needless to say, to provide that assistance.

hinking back to his younger years, where he first discovered his love of music, Eric Helmstetter, lead vocalist for Hackettstown’s Fourtold Band, recalls his love of AC/DC, Van Halen, Johnny Cougar (now known as John Mellencamp), and Pearl Jam, among other groups. These bands, unbeknownst to him at the time, were his earliest influences, and they gave him and his generation a platform from which to project themselves into the world, and even into their own artistic endeavors.

The band plays a good deal over at the Stanhope House (45 Main Street in Stan hope, NJ). An iconic and intimate venue, it is an excellent place to see Fourtold Band for the first time.

Brian Piper, the bands lead guitarist, is a lover of 90s music, elements of which he brings in when he takes Helmstetter’s lyr ics and basic compositions and helps turn them into the finished products.

The idea to form a band all started several years ago, when Helmstetter and Dlugosz, each a member of the same cov er band, decided to try writing their own original music. Helmstetter knew Cash and asked him if he would be interested in playing drums for a new group. Cash agreed, and brought along with him his friend six-string guitar player Brian Piper. Each of the members of Fourtold Band are from the Hackettstown area.

“I always have mixed feelings about it,” says Helmstetter regarding pushing the band more aggressively both in terms of marketing and visibility in high-octane venues like the Garden, or even the Stone Pony. “We’re all in our late 50s, and it isn’t very ‘rock n’ roll’ looking when we’re up on Hestage.”instead insists on concentrating all of the band’s energy on making quality music and writing real, rich lyrics.

“I just decided it was time to move on to an other phase of my life,” Bryant says. “A number of my friends came up along with my husband, and they came into the studio with me for the final newscast, and I just signed off for the last time. The microphone went off and they all cheered and clapped, and it was great to have them there. I always loved what I did, and was always learning something all the time. But it was like, “This has been a really good run, and now it’s time to move on.”

Hackettstown’s Deirdre Bryant Fondly Recalls Her Career in Broadcasting

At the end of the summer, when there was a hiring freeze and no new personnel came on board, Bryant was there to cover shifts. Also, ABC was starting to expand their affiliate radio stations, so Bryant was in the right place at the right time. “This was the 1980’s, and it was really sort of the height of radio news, because at that time stations had to carry radio news, and would usually affiliate with a network such as ABC, CBS, NBC, or Mutual,” Bryant says. “ABC created networks that catered to different radio for mats (All News, Middle of the Road, Country, Rock, etc.), and they were really tailoring news type deliveries to dif

After graduate school, she headed back to New York City and was, in her words, ‘torn between journalism and the ater,” and had also done work in television commercials. Her first job on the air was for WRNJ in Hackettstown. She back then did a Sunday week in review of the news, and was also working as producer in New York City. After eight months of doing both, she desired to be on air full-time, so she joined WHWH\WPST in Princeton. “I was there for almost two years and ABC was an affiliate, and I heard this woman, Geri Hamilton, and said, ‘There’s a woman do ing the network news. I think I can do that.’ She sent her tape to ABC, and she heard back several months later. She was told they needed a Boston based anchor, but Bryant told them she was getting married and couldn’t move to Boston. So, she was told to come to the studio New York where she was handed a script, and she read the copy on the air. They loved it, and she was offered a fill-in position for the summer only. “To me, it was a foot in the door,” Bryant said.

Bryant recalls that early November day in 2015 when she gave her final news report for ABC Radio Network, said a farewell to her listeners, and left the microphone for the last time after 34 years of delivering national news.

Bryant hails from Michigan, and attended Western Michigan University for journalism and theater. But even tually, she came to radio. Prior to starting graduate studies at Penn State University, that summer she applied at ABC, CBS, and NBC, and CBS hired her after a typing test. “They took me over to the broadcast center on 57th Street, and I walked in and someone met me at the door, and I followed him in. All of a sudden, I was standing in the middle of the CBS network newsroom.” After meeting legendary news caster, Walter Cronkite, she was interviewed by a manager and had her summer job as a billing clerk. While she toiled in the combined television and radio newsroom, she was encouraged - due to her experience of editing her college newspaper and her love of journalism – by CBS News Ra dio Correspondent, Reid Collins, to give broadcasting a try. Two decades ago, the Hackettstown, NJ, resident survived a near-fatal mugging in New York City that left him unable to walk or talk. Rodriguez battled through the tough times to not only regain those abilities, but to become a multi-year winner at the Hampton Classic, one of the nation’s largest outdoor horse shows. The prestigious hunter-jumper competition includes the finals of the Long Island Horse Show Series for Riders with Disabilities. Rodriguez has won the Beginning Independent class twice and now competes in the Advanced Independent class. Achieving that high level of success takes a lot of train ing. One day a week, Rodriguez attends TRAC (Therapeutic Riding at Centenary), an accredited adaptive riding pro gram at Centenary University that provides equine-assisted services to individuals with disabilities. Through TRAC’s vet erans programming, the University also offers the benefits of therapeutic riding to military veterans and their family members. He also trains at Freedom Horse in Long Valley, NJ, two days a “Ridingweek.isvery relaxing for me,” explained Rodri guez, who has aphasia—a disorder that affects his ability to communicate with and understand others—as a result of the mugging. “Mentally, it makes me feel good about myself. Hoff noted that many say, “ministry is a calling.” For her, it was like a gentle nudge. Before she was a pastor, Hoff, who goes by “Pastor Sharon”, was a software engineer. She was active in some groups and missions in church. There were always ministry opportunities, but she didn’t see them until her maturity. Then, she had mentors who encouraged her in the direction of the ministry and saw things in her that she didn’t see in herself. Now, she’s been a pastor for five years. In July, Pastor Sharon became the new pastor at Drakestown United Methodist Church, 6 Church Road in Hackettstown. She is also Chaplain at Compassionate Care Hospice, a Amedisys company, and serves Warren, Sussex and Morris counties. What Pastor Sharon loves most about the ministry is when two people, herself and another, make a connection that is just what that person needed. She’s had people tell her, “how did you know I needed a visit from you?” Al though she has an overall plan of who she will be visiting each month, it is not until each morning that she decides who she’ll see that day, “being open to hearing the direc tion from the spirit” to visit certain people.

On a personal note, Pastor Sharon shared that she is married for about 25 years; she and her husband have three children. The family has a goldfish named Jasper.

Drakestown United Methodist Church Welcomes Pastor Sharon Hoff

Finally, Pastor Sharon reflected on Drakestown’s minis tries today and gave a look to the future.

Sharon Hoff (“Pastor Sharon”) is the new pastor at Drakestown United Methodist Church.

In coming to Drakestown United Methodist Church, Pas tor Sharon says she brings “hope, faith, leadership, and vi sion”. She explained that in the last two years, the congre gation has lost 12 people. “They are grieving; people’s faith can be challenged in grief,” she said. She’s asked them to lean on her faith as they move forward. As for leadership, she said that is about “empowering people to do what they are passionate about.” With that goes vision, in helping the church community see the direction God wants them to go and to use their spiritual gifts.

All through my time at County College of Morris, I worked 29 hours a week at the A&P grocery store in Whippany. There were times when I worked the night shift, from 11:00 at night till 7:00 in the morn ing. I would punch out from work, climb up the stairs to the rest room, wash my face, wash up a bit and change my shirt. Then, I would buy a cinnamon bun at the A&P and drive off to CCM for an 8:00 class. I remember my class would end at 9:30. I didn’t have another class till 11:00, so I would go to the library, find an isolated corner, and put my face on my forearms on the desk and fall asleep. I kept a lit tle travel alarm clock in my attaché case, that I also car ried my books in.

I confess that I did not find chiropractic school easy. Specifically, I had a tough time with chemistry. In chiropractic college, a student is required to take one semester of inorganic chemistry, two semesters of organic chemistry, and two semesters of biochemistry.

I did get some grades of B’s on my tests, but I mostly got C’s on many of my tests. However, a few times, I ac tually did ace some of my chemistry exams.

I worked at a grocery store, during my years at Sherman College. Like my

During my time at CCM, I went to a local chiropractor to get my spine adjusted on a regular basis. My chiro practor encouraged me to go to chiropractic school, so I applied to Sherman Col lege of Chiropractic in Spar tanburg, South Carolina. I was accepted and made plans to begin chiropractic college in September.

Wallace originally grew up in both Franklin Lakes and Oakland, New Jersey. His mom and dad, John and Barba ra, raised Jack and his two brothers, Matt and Mike, and one daughter, Colleen. “My mom actually went to Rama po High School,” Wallace says, “and then me and all my siblings, we all went to Indian Hills. It’s a great part of the country to live in. I’ve gotten the opportunity to trav el a lot. And you know, northern Jersey is a really, really unique spot, and I think it really set me up for success. Moving forward in my life, the education I got at Indian Hills got me into every college I applied for, and set me up for success at the college I eventually did go to, and that was the College of New Jersey.”

And recently, he finished 10th in the world represent ing the US National Para canoe spring kayak team at the world championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia. “I’m very happy about that,” he says.

Like most kids, Wallace played a variety of sports grow ing up, but hockey became his favorite. “My older brother, he played hockey before I did. His idea of fun was to strap some pads on to me and throw me in a net in the drive way, so I would play goalie and he fired shots at me,” Wal lace, a diehard New Jersey Devils fan, says with a laugh at the recollection. “I played organized ice hockey for a number of years, played roller hockey in my town, and I played street hockey with my friends. It’s just kind of a perfect mix between all the different sports, but it’s still super fast. It can be unbelievably brutal, very intense, but there’s still so much finesse and skill involved. I’m biased obviously, but I do think it’s one of the best sports out there to blend all the different assets that an athlete can use at their disposal.”

or Jack Wallace, it’s been two Winter Paralympic Games Team USA Sled Hockey gold medals in a row. His first was in 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, while the second was this past winter in Beijing, China, with a 5 - 0 whitewashing of Canada.

terskiing off of the same boat. At one point, the boat came between both and he ended up getting hit by it. “The propeller struck my right leg and severely damaged it to the point where once I got to the hospital, it needed to be amputated. That was a really, really tough time in my life. But the one thing is it makes you grow up really fast. When you go through something like that as a 10-year-old kid, you start worrying about very different things. As a normal 10-year-old kid when you’re in fifth grade or sixth grade, usually you’re not thinking about all your doctor’s appointments or about insurance or all that different stuff that comes into play. When I got thrust into that situation, having to rehab, having to learn how to do so many things again, having to go through those trials and tribulations, it really kind of changes the way you think and matures you

Wallace split his time between playing goalie and de fense, and as a Devils rooter, he especially admired goalie, Martin Brodeur, and captain and defenseman, Scott Ste vens. “I looked up to those guys a lot when I was a kid,” Wallace says. “It was more like players that I wanted to meet, and since then, I have had the pleasure and priv ilege to meet both of them. So that’s pretty fantastic. I think it’s just the mentality that they have. As far as Bro deur, he kind of has that crazy style where he’ll make the save by any means necessary, no matter how he has to move his body. And then Scottie Stevens is just absolute

ly tough as nails. One of the best shutdown defensem en ever, and what a lot of people don’t talk about is how many points he had, and how often he actually scored. He was known for his really big hits and being super tough on guys and not letting anyone get through the middle, but he actually put up some pretty decent numbers for a defenseman in his day, as well as being an unbelievable leader for that team and leading them to championships.”

It was a yearly tradition to go up there and ei ther rent a lake house, or that year what we did was we camped out. You can rent campsites out on islands in the middle of the lake. It’s fantastic, it’s so nice, and it’s such a great spot. I’ve had so many great memories, and there’s just one pretty bad one.” Wallace and his sister were wa

Wallace’s first international competition game was against the Republic of Korea. “It was fantastic,” he re members with excitement. “I had never played interna tionally before. I was a rookie on the team, so they weren’t really sure what to expect of me and I wasn’t really sure what to expect of myself. But it was an honor and a privi lege to get out there for the first time. I had goosebumps putting on that jersey and getting on the ice with all those guys that I looked up to.”

His next big accomplishment and thrill was getting to go to the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games in Korea. He was in Josh Pauls’ skates eight years later. “It was the dream for a long time, and to have it come to fruition, it was al most a full circle moment for me and my family,” Wallace says. “After having gone through so much uncertainty, es pecially in those early years, it was like I finally crested that mountain; I’d finally come around. And you know, I think they (his family) knew before then that I was okay, and I was going to be fine long term, but I think that was a big old stamp now saying that that (his accident and leg amputation) no longer affects me, I’m doing what I want to do. It was great to go there and not only to win, but to be able to share it with my family. I know how rare of an opportunity that is. They were in the building when I won and I got to celebrate with them after. Unfortunately, that

In 2010, one Woodbridge Warrior member would go on to snag a gold medal at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada. Josh Pauls brought that medal back home and showed it to all the kids at the Woodbridge pro gram. Wallace remembers the moment. “He showed it to me and my dad, and when we were holding it, my dad turned to me and said, ‘What do you think about that? You could win one of these one day.” John Wallace’s words would be prophetic – twice. “From that point on, that kind of became the goal in the back of my mind. Once I was in high school, it became a serious endeavor to make the development team, and then make the national team.” In 2013, Wallace was selected for the first US national devel opment team, spent three years playing for them, and in

It went exactly according to plan. We won the entire tournament by a margin of 30 goals, and I think one team scored one goal against us. We did our job before the tournament preparing. Another area Norwescap addresses is employment. Valli talked about the Career and Life Transitions Center and the Pathways 2 Prosperity program. A Career and Life Tran sitions Center helps those who haven’t been in the workforce for a while or are entering it for the first time or need to upscale. Val li noted that one example of a person who graduated the program is a woman now on the Norwescap board. “She had three kids, all of whom had special needs. Her hus band, at some point, decided that that was too much for him and he left, and then she had a struggle…[to] figure out on her own [what to do]. She had left a career in New York to raise her family and now she’s on her own, and so she didn’t know where to turn. She called her Career and Life Transitions Center, didn’t do anything for a few months, and then called again.” Valli notes that the woman, though shy at first, completed the program and built her network (through peer-to-peer sharing and support) and is now pursuing a career in corporate America. Another program, Pathways 2 Prosperity, in Sussex County, is peer-networking where a group meets once a week for dinner to work on personal and professional goals and to help each Norwescapother.also helps with financial ca pacity building, improving the financial well-being of low income individuals and families. Valli shared two of the programs that fall under that. One program, VITA (Vol unteer Income Tax Assistance), offers free tax help to low-moderate income individuals and families, including young adults, adults, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and those with limited English. Another program helps participants to open a savings account,

a hard time paying for childcare can call us and apply for a subsidy,” In addition, “every licensed child care provider in our footprint gets training, technical assistance, and sup port,” shared Valli. However, it is not just the educational needs of young children that Norwescap helps. Another example of its services in the Degree Up program. Valli shared that “a good percentage of communi ty college students are struggling financially.” Norwescap provides a computer lounge, vol unteers who tutor and provide a willing ear to listen (when needed), an on-site food pan try and information on Norwescap services. Valli shared that analysis done has shown that those who participate in the Degree Up program are much more likely than their counterparts to complete their studies and matriculate. “It shows you that sometimes you really just need a little support to help you get through….. most community college kids are probably holding a job somewhere. They have other things going on, so having a little bit of support to get them through the rough patches really helps improve their out come,” said Valli.

woman had two cigarettes, her kid in the car, nowhere to live and didn’t know where to go. Another woman, who had left her job to be a stayat-home mom and was suddenly abandoned by her husband, needed to get back into the workforce and was looking for help. Struggling students at Sussex County Community College needed tutoring and other support, and low-income families were missing out on tax refunds because they needed guidance in completing their tax returns. These are just a few of the examples of people helped by Norwescap, a non-profit organization. Started as part of the war on poverty during the Johnson administration, Norwescap is a $22,000,000 comprehensive non-profit social service organization dedicated to serving people and moving them from a place of being in poverty, or on the verge of poverty, to the point where they and their families are thriving. It also helps people advocate for their communities and much more. Serving Hunterdon, Warren, Morris, Somerset and Sussex counties, Norwescap ’s corporate office is at 350 Marshall Street in Phillipsburg. Recently, Mark Valli, Norwescap’s CEO, talked about the organization and gave just a few examples of the services provided through the six strategic areas which Norwescap helps: education, employment, health and nutrition, financial capacity building, housing and energy service, and volunteer and civic engagement.Whilethe organization helps those in poverty, Valli noted that a large percentage of those it helps are ALICEs: Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed. That means that they are people who are working but are just one payment, one illness, one pay check away from struggling. Valli noted that though people may come to the organization with one need, their situation is such that they usually have more needs. Norwescap is not just one program but a portfolio of ser vices. About 90% of its funding comes from the government (federal, state, county, and municipal) and 10% from donors and grants. The latter helps in funding programs where participation might have been restricted by governmentNorwescaprules.offers services in the area of education with early childhood education, child care, and the Sussex County Communi ty College “Degree Up” program being some examples. “[We are] the leading early child hood education non-profit in the northwest corner of the state. We are a major Head Start provider,” noted Valli. Norwescap has Head Start centers scattered around four dif ferent counties. “[Also,] we are the childcare resource referral agency for three counties so anybody who needs childcare can call us and ask for advice. the ways Norwescap helps is by providing education on chronic diseases and access to free cancer screenings and other healthcare resources through its Health Connections program.Afifth area Norwescap helps with is hous ing and community development. Valli said this area touches on everything to do with housing from homeless prevention pro grams to rental assistance and much more. He noted that in the borough of Sussex, Norwescap runs an 11 -unit senior housing complex. It also does housing counseling, helping people save for a home, providing them with information on how to get to that point where they’re able to purchase their own home. Also, Norwescap provides supplemental support to help those having problems paying utility bills, getting a tank of oil, air conditioning, etc.

Valli noted that for those in need, it is easy to get help. All they have to do is click on the green “Get Assistance” button the homep age of the website. Norwescap’s website is www.norwescap.org.

is how Norwescap was able to help small businesses when they were shut down due to COVID-19. “We were able to access fund ing from the state to provide direct grants, over $500,000 in direct grants, to small busi nesses to keep them afloat…. to pay their utility bills, to be able to help pay their rent, able to help pay for PPE and other things, so we literally invested half a million dollars in small businesses …to keep them alive during COVID-19.” In addition, some of that money went to helping businesses establish an on line presence and e-commerce so they could pivot the way they were doing business. Also, Norwescap has a variety of volunteer opportunities including ones through Amer icorps and AmeriCorps seniors. People can find out more about those by looking at the Norwescap website.

“When a community is engaged, you get better health outcomes,” shared Valli as he started to talk about the last strategic area in which Norwescap offers help: Volunteer ism and Civic Engagement. “We help peo ple to advocate for themselves, advocate for their communities.” He noted that through a tax credit program, Norwescap was able to purchase a single-family home which had been an abandoned lodgings bar, renovate it and will be turning it over in a couple of months to a low income family. “So that’s taking what was a vacant home for over a dozen years in downtown Phillipsburg …on the main track, by the way, making it into a viable home, helping to improve not just the family’s asset but also to help improve the neighborhood,” said Valli. In addition, he shared, “We did more than that. We’ve been able to purchase banners and flags to help market businesses and put planters in downtown Phillipsburg.” Norwescap has also organized community get- togethers and or ganized community events. Right now, the focus has been on Phillipsburg but that will be expanded. One of Valli’s favorite stories

is a big part of what Norwescap is all about.

since I was a child, I wanted to be a writer. I’ve been writing for different publications in New Jersey, including this one for several years. However, my dream has always been to complete a book that adds something of value to the community.

For me, the turning point came when as a young adult, my father confided in me that he had OCD and was still able to make a good life for himself. He also told me he would always love me and believed I could get better.

My father who taught at several universities through out New Jersey including Ramapo College and Saint Peters University grew up in a time when mental health was not discussed and was forced to live in silence for a great period of time. I believe our society has made significant progress, but we still have great strides to make.

The love a family can provide to someone suffering from OCD or any mental illness can help immensely. This book is aimed primarily at those who are in pain, their families, and professionals serving this population as well.

That changed everything and, in my book, “Family Ill ness,” this beautiful story is told. My father passed away from Covid in 2020 and I never got the chance to present him with a copy. This book was intended to be my way of letting my Dad know he was my hero, and that I never would have survived without his love.

Unfortunately, since I was a child, I’ve suffered im mensely from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) which has taken its toll on both me and my family. There were a lot of things I wanted to accomplish in my life that got side tracked due to this illness which is all too prevalent.

provide comfort as well. I have been touched by the outpouring of support from therapists who specialize in OCD treatment. One such local psychotherapist said “Evan’s writing style makes his book enjoyable and eye opening for people strug gling with OCD, their family members and clinicians in mental health. At this point, I have started under the tutelage of Liv ingston Author and Entrepreneur Barry Farber to place my books in non-traditional settings. For example, I am in the process of seeking partnerships with cafes and restau rants to place my book by the register rather than having it get lost in a bookstore surrounded by thousands of other books. At these locations, I will be providing signed copies of the book along with brochures and other information about mental health.

To give back more to the community, a portion of these sales will go towards mental health groups fighting stigma.

Understanding Tax Terms: Contemporaneous Records Everyone Needs to Know What This Means!

If you have problems getting to sleep at night and you turn to the IRS tax code for help, you might find some vocabulary that is very foreign to you. One of the more uncommon words used by the IRS is the term “contemporaneous.” So what does it mean and why should you care?

Keep a log. Many transactions require the correct documentation at the time the activity occurs. This is true with deductible mileage, gambling loses and tip income. So keep a log of your activities as they occur.

You can cry foul, but time and again the IRS has had tax courts uphold their elimination of a taxpayer’s deduction for lack of contem poraneous documentation. Here are some areas where the term contemporaneous is especially

Wait to file. To meet the IRS definition of contemporaneous, the receipt or acknowl edgement must be received the earlier of either when you file your tax return OR the due date (including extensions) of your tax return. This is particularly true with chari table contributions. So if you want to play it safe, do not file until all documentation is in hand.

According to the IRS, it means that the records used to support a claim on your tax return are created and originated at the same time as your claimed deduction. In other words, if you realize that you forgot to get a receipt for something, you are out of luck if you try to get one at a later date. Not fair!
