By Steve Sears anfred Saul has had a good three years. He has won 139 Nikon sponsored photography contests, competing against thousands of photographers worldwide. Also, the Whippany resident of 56 years has 25 of his works currently on display at the Hanover Municipal Building’s Cultural Arts Center in the current “Art on the Wall” exhibit. The exhibit, which runs through the end of June, features solely shots from the historic 300-year-old Whippany Burying Ground, including the “Plymouth Rock Of New Jersey,” the oldest known gravestone, and the burial spot of John Richards in northern New Jersey, which dates to 1718. mark Commission and a library worker, to display his work. The 67-year-old Saul has been a photographer since the late 1970s, and he has taken images of landscapes, wedding ceremonies, done food, real estate, and portrait photography, and in the early 1980s was even called on by scientists for his infrared and ultraviolet quality photo taking technique, so the scientists could determine health of planes and content of soil. “If you use infrared film and put on an infrared filter on there as well, the plants come out in different colors,” he said. “So, the scientists who then look at the plant and soil samples will be able to determine the validity of the plant, whether the plants had good like in it, or if a plant starts to show brown, then obviously the plant is dying, and there’s different levels within the ground that have different colors, and with water there’s different photo textures to it. I did the photography and turned it over to the actual scientists. I volunteered to do that because I found it fascinating.” The former finance worker has always had a passion for photography. Early on he worked his full-time job during the week, and on weekends he took portrait and wedding photos, and commercial shoots for magazines. It was during this time he also branched out into scientific photography. Eventually he left the financial field
and got his degree from the New York School of Photography. From there it was on to the freelance life. His photos can be seen in township calendars, and in the popular magazine, “Preservation.” Saul’s heart lies in historical photography, and a lot of what he prefers is taking gravestone shots.
