Before turning to publishing, Edmond was first a writer herself (and she continues to be one today). After two years as Den Leader, I became Cubmaster when the previous one moved on to the Scouts BSA program. This will be my second year as Cubmaster.”Cub Scout Pack 20 members have a set of requirements they need to complete to earn their rank badge. The requirements focus on things like teamwork, service to the community, healthy eating, exercising, and outdoor skills. They are always looking to do more. “We are always looking for new ideas and activities to keep Scouting fresh and exciting,” says Carpenter. “We have a committee that meets monthly and helps plan our activities. These are parent volunteers and without them, I’d be in over my head! They bring some great ideas to the table. Last year, our big trip was Operation Slumber, where we got to sleep over on the U.S.S. We are attending a camporee in October: this is an event where Packs from around the area come together at a camp and go through different activity stations, such as row boats, fishing, bb guns, archery, stomp rockets, and more. There is the option to camp over, so of course we need to have a campfire and s’mores! Other activities throughout the year include Pack activities like a Pinewood Derby - a fan favorite, a Recycling Regatta, where kids build a wind-powered boat out of trash and race it), visits to our Police and Fire Departments, and our end-of-year awards ceremony.”Pack20 and Troop 128 both fall under the Boy Scouts of America program. Cub Scouts members are in grades K-5, and the Scouts BSA are in the age group of 11-17. In 2021, the Cub Scout Pack 20 formed its first Girl’s Den. Carpenter explains more about the program, as well as his personal involvement. “Pack 20 is organized by ‘Dens’ which are each grade level K-5. Our Dens combine

“I started my Scouting career in 1992 with what was then Troop 20 in East Hanover,” says Rob Carpenter, Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 20 of East Hanover. “We took pride in being an active troop. By that, I mean that we had weekly meetings and monthly camping trips. Many troops do not have as many opportunities. In Scouting, one can learn a variety of leadership and outdoor skills at the weekly meetings, and work on planning the next camping trip. We had many great camping trips, which included hikes, canoeing, ice fishing, whitewater rafting, and summer camp. I eventually achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. I am very happy to be able to give back to Scouting, by being an adult leader and guiding today’s youth.”

The result is a memoir imbued with a sense of mission, both in the boldness of her affirmation to be present for her former beau and in the equally bold decision to elevate the experience into writing. The act of replaying each day, taking notes of precise events and conversations, delving deeper into her own feelings and motivations, and slowing down time was, for Edmond, an unexpected, slow-burning catharsis. The end result is a touching and revealing look into her heart, her faith, and a statement on the raw power of compassion.“Thesense of purpose was immediate for me once I heard he wanted to see me,” Edmond recalls. “We had broken up about a month prior to his request for me to join him in

FLORHAM PARK - By day, Dawn Monique Edmond works as a paralegal. Once the sun sets, you can find her in her Florham Park home running her small but growing publishing company, Enid-Books, Corp., named after her mother, Enid. In the time she has run the company, she has published books on a range of subjects and reading levels, and grades of thematic intensity. From a children’s book on a girl who wants to join the football team, to her assisting a pastor in writing about his failure as a father and family man, Enid-Books is unafraid of the big topics, and with Edmond at the helm, only has plans on growing.

With the memoir finished and a string of rejections by larger publishing firms looming over her, Edmond simply decided to start up her own company. She named it EnidBooks, after her late mother. The decision brought her into contact with other aspiring storytellers that were in need of her skills as a researcher, writer, and stickler for on-the-page details to improve their manuscripts. Needless to say, as the

CEO of her small company, Edmond wears many different hats, including that of editor, proofreader, talent scout, and counselor.ForWhen a Father Fails, she approached Newark pastor Bryant Ali about a book he had written with the same title, about his disparity of his successful life as pastor and his failure as a husband and father. Edmond read the book and found it lacking in narrative cohesion, forcing the reader to strain through choppy sentence sequencing, poor paragraph structure, and poor vocabulary choices. Reading this version of Ali’s story, which Edmond recognized as having enormous potential if done properly, was a stifling experience.

They say none of this would be possible without the support and generosity of their families, donors and sponsors.

She approached Ali personally and was honest with him about what she thought of his writing. To her surprise, the pastor readily accepted the critique, and admitted to being in need of help in stringing his otherwise fascinating story—and sense of regret for his failures—together into a more readable volume, one that could attract a wider readership and, hopefully, encourage other failing fathers to take a good, hard look into the mirror. The end result? Exactly that. When a Father Fails explores failing fatherhood from both the father’s side and the family’s side, focusing on the need of the father to decide to do right, even when initially rejected by his children who, in the early stag-

MOMIs co-founders spent countless hours on this project, MOMI’s Board of Trustees and advisors have knowledge and experience that results in innovative and well thought out ideas and plans.

Science museums are traditionally designed to teach specific scientific concepts. Art museums are built around collections and historical museums are designed to teach us about the history of place and time.

MOMI wants families to engage with the park’s many playful learning zones, encouraging them to visit the park regularly.

New Jersey has a world class science museum, amazing art and historical museums. These institutions are great assets to our state. But we do not have a state-of-the-art children’s museum built around the visitor — i.e. children and their families.

“We are hoping to raise $100,000 to cover the cost of the project,” treasurer Cathy Paugh says. “These gathering spaces are a much needed way to bring communities together. I

If you have driven on East Hanover Avenue in Morris Township, you will see that construction of Morris Marketplace is underway. Santos de Araujo says together with the property’s landscape designer and MOMI’s team of experts in early childhood development and design of children’s museum exhibits, they have created six playful learning zones to be installed in the park.

States.MOMI regularly hears from parents that they need a safe place where their children can get messy, experiment and explore. And while it will take time to build a world-class children’s museum where one can do all that, they hope to promote Thinkscape as something families need to make time for.

Having buried their anger and disguised it as apathy, children in such situations need space with which to rediscover for themselves the depths of their desire to love their father, and to be loved by him. The father’s responsibility in this situation is, frankly, to just keep on showing up, despite the intensity of his children’s initial rejection.

The first of its kind in New Jersey, Museum of Makers + Innovators (MOMI) are launching their playful learning pocket park soon at Morris Marketplace. That’s at the corner of East Hanover Avenue and Martin Luther King Avenue, adjacent to the Hanover Township border.According to founder Sara Sorenson, early on in the pandemic they were inspired by Dr. Kathy Hirsh-Pasek’s work at Temple University — to connect the science of learning with the benefits of play, and her team’s design of Philly’s Urban Thinkscape.“Itmeans a great deal to us that we can bring such innovative work to New Jersey,” she says, of the multigenerational learning and connection-building transformative public space.

And it is important that MOMI has both indoor and outdoor spaces to fuel the imagination.Children spend 80% of their waking time OUTSIDE of school, and MOMI’s certified Playful Learning Landscapes (PLL) initiative at Morris Marketplace will serve the greater Morristown area with more hands-on children’s opportunities.“PLLs create skill-building experiences in local community spaces as children are always

They anticipate the park will open late fall or early winter 2023, and are still working with the site developer. However, the successful completion of Morris Marketplace Thinkscape is dependent on the amount of community financial support they receive.

One of the best feelings of walking into a children’s museum is one of freedom. There are no rules, no expectations, according to Sorenson.

Currently MOMI is a Museum Without Walls and conducts pop-up playful learning experiences at festivals and events.

She says they want to create that unrestricted awareness for visitors to MOMI once it is built. They are free to use all of their senses to discover new things at their own pace.

To learn more, visit www. thinkmomi.org.

Sorenson says they also want visitors to know they can be an advocate in their own community to create more child and family friendly infrastructure.

“Innature.order for our children to be prepared with the skills to succeed in future careers, they need to develop 21st century skills,” says co-founder Nicole Pittaluga. “Children’s museums provide affordable, accessible opportunities for developing collaboration, critical thinking, growth mindset, communication, citizenship and creativity.”

“Our hope through these playful learning opportunities is to shine a light on the benefits of play and bring back play to our communities,” says Sorenson.

The Memorial is located at 1500 State Highway 57 in Washington, on the driveway between the Warren County Technical School and the Warren County Community College, and near the county Public Safety Department and 911 Communications center.

The Warren County Emergency Services and 9/11 Memorial site was dedicated in 2011, and the monument itself was completed for September 11, 2012 in memory of the four Warren County residents who died on September 11, 2001.

The memorial consists of a large steel girder from the Twin Towers, and two granite towers representing the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center. On either side are black granite memorials with the names of those from law enforcement, and the firefighters and EMS personnel who died in the line of duty. There are four smaller round pillars topped with brass disks, one memorializing Flight 93, one for the Pentagon, one for the World Trade Center, and the fourth for all of the locations that were attacked combined.

According to Warren County Fire Marshal Joseph Lake, Jr., a memorial committee member, the memorial is a place of peace and rememberance.“It gives the residents of Warren County, particularly the ones who lost friends and loved ones, a place to go to and remember.”

James Monaghan, Jr., on Wednesday, July 20, was named the Roxbury School District’s new director of security.

Monaghan has much experience in the field of law enforcement. “I have 30 years experience as a police officer in East Hanover. I was a Captain there and I began an Emergency Service Unit. We trained in the local schools as well as Hanover Park High School. We had extensive training with the F.B.I. and Morris County Sheriff’s C.E.R.T. team. The training and experience really made us prepare for the day no one hopes ever happens. I helped develop and implement the safety procedures for the East Hanover School system. The police department partnered with the Superintendent and Principals. It is a great relationship,” he states proudly.

Donations of items come from people who are cleaning out their homes or people who are tired of what they have, want to get something new, but don’t want to throw out the current items because they are too nice. The store can only accept donations on Saturdays during store hours. Also, donations cannot be accepted by leaving them outdoors.

Holiday, and Salvation Army,” noted Crofton. Today, the store has four rooms and in addition to helping charities, it benefits its historic church. Crofton noted that The First Presbyterian Church of East Hanover was established in 1718 and is the oldest religious congregation of Morris County. The present church building was erected in 1835 on Mount Pleasant Avenue (at the junction of Hanover Road), East Hanover and is on the National Register of Historical Places. With that honor also comes added cost when repairs are needed because they need to be done in a way to keep the building historically accurate and that is expensive.

As for the items the store sells, it sells new and gently used jewelry, handbags, kitchen articles (such as dishes, glasses, pots, pans, coffee pots), blankets, toys, games, puzzle, Lenox, crystal dishes, some small furniture, and many other items. The store also has a permanent Christmas room to let people get a head-start on decorations to make the holiday merry. Other seasons are not forgotten. Easter, Halloween, etc. may not have their own room, but decorations are put out for sale in season. Crofton noted that the store does not have clothing (due to space limitations).

Some customers like to talk with the volunteers and share stories. Crofton noted that she was shy when she was young, but not anymore and gets chatty with the customers. She admits she also enjoys seeing what is donated and that sometimes the volunteers buy some items themselves. “[It is] so fun”, she said of volunteering.

Materials can also vary. The most common is titanium, but gold and zirconia are other options. The manufacturing process is also another variable: some are milled from a block of material, some are cast from wax patterns. Now that you are familiar with they type, the category, and the materials, how does your dentist select which is appropriate for you? There are a lot of variables, but the biggest ones are: location in the mouth, amount of available bone, and type of gum tissue.

Dental implant abutments can be a confusing topic. Let’s talk about a single implant, which would replace a single tooth. There are 3 components: the implant or fixture, the crown or cap, and an “invisible” connector called an abutment.

The “implant” or “fixture” is the actual titanium cylinder that is placed into the jawbone. Using a crude term, this is the “screw.” The “crown” or “cap” is the tooth that you see when you smile in the mirror: its your replacement tooth. However, to connect these two parts, you need the third component: this is the abutment. You can view a diagram of these three parts on my website: go to “For Patients,” then “Patient Education,” and look for the Information Sheet, “General Info Regarding Dental ThereImplants.”are two basic types

An implant in the top front of the mouth oftentimes requires a custom abutment. The bone in this region is angled, and esthetics are critical. There is minimal room for error, and the “emergence profile,” meaning how the tooth exits from the gum, is important. In the back of the mouth you can get away with a lot more. Although the emergence profile isn’t as important from an esthetic standpoint, it can be important from a functional standpoint so that you don’t trap lots of food and have irritated gums.

We needed an understanding encompassing everything, from listening, to having empathy, to having a cohesion that ultimately would develop into success on the field. The one thing that they did was they allowed me to care. They all accepted what I was trying to do in terms of caring for them, not just teaching them softball.”

HANOVER - Hanover Park High School head softball coach, Sergio Rodriguez, continues his successful career journey.

I felt the initial growth needed to occur, within the league, with our game planning and with our scouting reports. But the kids were receptive from dayAlthoughone.” the Hornets fielded many underclassmen, Rodriguez had the benefit of having team members that did have playing experience. “The kids were extremely helpful the first time through the conference, because in a lot of situations they knew the league better than I did,” Rodriguez says. “So, it was an interesting March and April for us as we began to acquire a rhythm and a routine that ultimately will become hopefully the staple of our program as we move forward.”The Hornets defeated Leo-

This year’s 21 – 8 team was a young club; there were only three seniors, two who played regularly. “I’ve been around the gamut and I’ve been doing this 27-years,” Rodriguez explains. “A couple of things hit me right away when I got here.

FLORHAM PARK - It goes well beyond the late Roger Kindel’s basketball and golf coaching record, as significant as those numbers are.

Kristin Giotta, Director of Athletics for Compliance, has been with the school for 17 years. “Roger was my first boss,” says Giotta fondly. “He was the first man that gave me a chance, he was the first man that hired me. I literally took over two days before preseason as a building manager as my full-time job, and as a part time women’s soccer coach. I’m very grateful for that opportunity, to be 25-yearsold at that time and to have a full-time job. I worked my way up the ladder here, and I owe so much to him, because I obviously personally would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for him. He was without a doubt one of the biggest influences here in the athletic

The hoped-for goal is $150,000 to fund the endeavor, and the mission has been well received. Athletics has reached out to the men’s basketball alumni base. “And the initial response was awesome,” says Slanovec. “I want to say that we’ve had maybe like 15 to 20 people who immediately upon seeing it donated. We hope that’s going to then spark them to push it on to other people, and hopefully that helps us grow our alumni database within basketball a little bit. Roger did so much more than just coach basketball; he impacted so many other student athletes’ lives. We actually had one of the other golf programs in the MAC conference put in a small donation on their behalf. it’s been kind of incredible to see how far it’s spread although we are still early in theForphase.”more information, kindel-court.www.support.fdu.edu/devils/visit

Jeff Slanovec is head men’s basketball and golf coach. “It was because of what Roger had meant to the FDU community and the FDU basketball community specifically, and for putting in over 40 years of time at FDU,” says Slanovec.

Slanovec recalls talk of renaming the court was set in motion prior to Kindel’s passing in early March of 2020. “It happened very shortly after I took over (2018). It kind of became, ‘Hey, we’ve got to do this at some point.’ And you never really want to do it right after he retires. Unfortunately, he passed away right before the pandemic started. That I think expedited it a little bit, and it all kind of came to fruition the last couple months.”

“It’s one gym, and it’s pretty big,” says Giotta. “We have three courts kind of going across one main court, and then basically three courts that run in the opposite direction, and then we have the screens that come down and separate them if we’re running rentals or AAU events or something like that. It’s pretty heavily used and its definitely time

department for so many years, and he definitely left his imprint on things with FDU.”

I’m not a big preacher of wins and losses, because I always tell my kids when the state tournament starts, everybody’s 0 and 0. But I am a big proponent of doing well within your conference, and I believe that that’s the first measurement between the kids and myself as a coach, because that’s when we begin, that’s our first dress rehearsal for the state tournament. That’s when we’re able to work on putting game plans together and trying to go into scouting reports and stuff like that.” The Hornets won only one conference game in 2021, which concerned their new coach more than their subpar record. “The fact that they were one and 10, that to me was again a little bit more of a challenge because that’s where

During Kindel’s hardwood coaching reign from 1977 – 2005, his teams won 334 games, and they made nine appearances in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Tournament, six in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) tourney, and twice were entered in the NCAA Division III Tournament. nia, Caldwell, and Rutherford prior to knocking off Bernards in the North Group II final with a dramatic 6 – 5 victory after trailing 4 – 0. “It was an incredible moment for our kids,” Rodriguez says of the Bernards game. After an overall Group II semifinal victory over Pequannock, the Hornets lost 4 – 0 to eventual state champ, Haddon Heights. “It was a culmination of just a phenomenal, phenomenal season for them,” Rodriguez states about the Hornets. “Not necessarily in terms of wins and losses, but more so in growth. I think our kids became not only better softball players, but better people going through the process of dealing with adversity every day, and adding a goal to realistically just get better. We never spoke about winning anything. We spoke about getting better and letting the wins and losses take care of ourselves.”ForRodriguez, its two-fold when it comes to his coaching.

During the 1970s the Persian Gulf oil producing countries embargoed crude oil shipments to the U.S.. We learned important lessons in those years, many of which are pertinent to the upcoming world-wide struggle to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

We learned: to live with mile-long lines at gas stations and be rewarded with an eight gallon purchase, so we drove less. The lines are gone, but the price is up. Less driving still make sense.

In the meantime, subsidies for electric vehicles are counter-productive for the goal.

Some people are beginning to realize that nuclear power produces no greenhouse gases. However, fear about accidents like Chernobyl and Fukushima still exists here and in Europe. There is also fear about the disposal of spent fuel rods. Westinghouse developed a design that would eliminate the kind of thing that happened at Fukushima, however, nothing has been done to minimize the disaster fears of the people in ourIncreasingcountry. nuclear power generation would allow more “green” power with less disruption of our living space than relying solely on wind and solar. A communication program to reduce nuclear power fears should be among the first steps in a rational plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Crude oil and refineries are not going to disappear. We will need to have some fuel burning generation units available to ensure that the new power grid has the flexibility it needs to deal with unforeseen problems. The refineries also produce the raw materials for our beloved water bottles and a host of other man-made ma-

Electric Cars: The Wrong First Step

Bio fuels are getting a lot of attention these days. These fuels are derived from plants

We learned: that our national energy system was composed of millions of users and generators and that saving a bit of energy in one part of the system did not necessarily result in a saving in the overall national consumption of oil. We needed to consider the entire national system to be sure that any individual change would result in a net decrease in crude oil use.

We learned: to set our thermostats for 78 degrees for AC and 68 for heat and saved money without suffering much.

for the inverters required to change their direct current output (DC) to the alternating current (AC) in the grid. We will also need transformers to increase their low voltage output to the levels needed for the grid.In a couple of decades or so, when we have paved the deserts of Arizona and California with solar cells, dotted all our horizons with propellers on 200-foot-tall poles, built those rectifiers for the solar electricity and storage facilities for both these intermittent sources of power, and run thousands of miles of wires, electric vehicles might make sense. Hopefully, our national plan will include finding and training the mechanics needed to build and maintain the new generating facilities.

One lesson from this history is that the rush to electric vehicles is premature. It does not consider how the incremental electricity to supply the new load will be generated. Only about 20% of the nation’s power is currently generated from renewable sources. (and the hydroelectric piece of that is under attack by the salmon fishing industry.) another 20% is still generated by burning coal.Right now, incremental power loads will likely be produced by burning more coal in the least efficient units in the system. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and Duke Energy each of which produces millions of megawatts for our national grid, still generate 20% of their power by burning coal. Adding the load from electric cars will not reduce greenhouse gas emissions at these sources. It will add to them.

A well thought out plan would force reductions in other electricity uses to compensate for the extra load from the vehicles. Nighttime lighting of the Empire State Building and other non-productive power uses might be a target. When we get serious about eliminating coal burning, requiring all major sporting events to be played in daylight could be a major step. (The Chicago Cubs did that for decades). The complexity of how the power grid would deal with shifting loads as wind and solar are phased in would have to be thoroughly analyzed as well.In this country, the major consumers of power are far from current, and probably future, generation sites. It will take about four square miles of solar panels to produce the power now generated by a single commercial station. In addition, we will need space

get the population on board with that plan. Our politicians jumping in front of the nearest TV camera to spout promises will do nothing to help. This essay is just a list of some of the problems. Solutions will take a lot of work, and will be critical for developing a sound plan to do our share of saving the planet.

FLORHAM PARK - The world is gearing up to change billions of people’s lives and throw trillions of dollars at reducing greenhouse gas emissions based on computer projections of disaster. Whether you believe the projections or not, prudence dictates that we, and the world, need to do something now.

Thus, fuels. hydrogen alone would seem to be the fuel of choice: burning it produces no CO2. Unfortunately, hydrogen is hard to get. It takes a lot of electricity to split it out from water. In addition, hydrogen use brings with it logistical and safety problems. It must be transported and stored at very high pressures. At those pressures it can defuse through some steel containers. grown in our fields (corn, soybeans etc.) plus a tiny amount from processing waste cooking oils. They produce CO2 when burned just as fossil fuels do. A rudimentary search on Google reported a typical bio-fuel would produce more greenhouse gas than natural gas when burned. The theory is that because the plants on which they are based absorb CO2 from the atmosphere via photosynthesis while growing,so some of the greenhouse gas produced by burning them is offset. Here we are faced with a land use balance:food versusTherefuel.are many other questions that will need answers in a “carbon neutral” world, and neutral is not enough. Some nations will need to increase energy use to upgrade their standards of living.

AREA Ever since I was a child, I wanted to be a writer. I’ve been writing for different publications in New Jersey, including this one for several years. However, my dream has always been to complete a book that adds something of value to the Unfortunately, community.sinceI was a child, I’ve suffered immensely from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) which has taken its toll on both me and my family. There were a lot of things I wanted to accomplish in my life that got sidetracked due to this illness which is all too prevalent.Forme, the turning point came when as a young adult, my father confided in me that he had OCD and was still able to make a good life for himself. He also told me he would always love me and believed I could get better.

AREA In June of 1973, at the age of 19, I graduated with an Associate of Arts degree from County College of Morris. It was a tough two years for me. But, it was also a very fulfilling time. I didn’t have another class till 11:00, so I would go to the library, find an isolated corner, and put my face on my forearms on the desk and fall asleep. I kept a little travel alarm clock in my attaché case, that I also carried my books in.

I confess that I did not find chiropractic school easy. Specifically, I had a tough time with chemistry. In chiropractic college, a student is required to take one semester of inorganic chemistry, two semesters of organic chemistry, and two semesters of biochemistry. I did get some grades of B’s on my tests, but I mostly got C’s on many of my tests. However, a few times, I actually did ace some of my chemistry exams.

In the past, I have worked with a variety of families throughout New Jersey, forming and working with them in support groups. There is no magic pill, and this book is not going to solve all problems associated with the illness. However, I sincerely hope it lends a compassionate and compelling voice to the mental health community.Atthis point, I have started under the tutelage of Living-

I took my studies very seriously and managed to make the Dean’s List, for all four semesters at CCM. I also wrote weekly columns and articles for Youngtown Edition, the official college newspaper of CCM. It was a tough time. But

My father who taught at several universities throughout New Jersey including Ramapo College and Saint Peters University grew up in a time when mental health was not discussed and was forced to live in silence for a great period of time. I believe our society has made significant progress, but we still have great strides to make. The love a family can provide to someone suffering from OCD or any mental illness can help immensely. This book is aimed primarily at those who are in pain, their families, and professionals serving this population as well.

pretty much only talked about looking forward to attending Rutgers University in September. She had become more and more obsessed with an immense love for life deep within the ocean. We found ourselves talking less and less about the fine art of writing poetry.

I always cherished having Teresa in my tennis class and having breakfast with her after tennis classes. Part of me always wanted to ask Teresa for a date, or at the very least, ask her for her telephone number. But I had this strong inner feeling that it would be all so wrong, that I needed to be true blue to

I had signed up for a tennis course. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, beginning at 8:00 sharp my tennis class would begin. There was a young woman in my class, Teresa, whom I became good friends with. It was a most strange time for me. Because I was still dating my high school sweetheart, Penny Lancaster.

Penny graduated, with high honors, from Eastside High School. That summer, Penny

In September of 1972, Penny began attending Rutgers University. We would write each other, but within a couple of months, our letters to each other became further and further apart. It was in the very month of September of 1972, that I did see Teresa in the student center. We sat and talked for a short time. Teresa talked and talked about the wonderful boy she had met during the summer. There was a certain sadness that filled my heart when I saw a spark in her Teresa’s eyes as she talked about her new boyfriend. Part of me deeply regrated never having asked Teresa for her phone number, when we were close friends, the year before.

Hold dear to the friends in your life. But know that sometimes, there comes a time when the best gift you can give a friend, is to let them go and move on to new vistas in their life. It isn’t easy. And, yes, it

Sometimes people come into our life for a season and a reason. When I was in high school, I was painfully shy. Penny helped me to overcome my shyness. She encouraged me to join the staff of my high school newspaper. When I began my studies at CCM, new people began to come into my life. Sadly, between attending CCM, doing homework, and working at the A&P, there was less and less time to see Penny.

While I did my best to support Penny’s new love for the science of life within the deep blue sea, it just didn’t spark a flame within me. Also, Penny had gotten a job as a lifeguard at the Paterson YMCA. Penny was a great swimmer, while I was at best, a mediocre swimmer.

I continued to date during my freshman year at CCM. But we both knew, deep in our hearts, that we were drifting apart. It was no fault of either one of us. Our ships were now sailing in different directions. Penny had developed a great interest in oceanography.

Penny and I had began dating, the summer of 1969, when I had just finished my sophomore year at Boonton High School. Our parents were both members of the Trailmates Chapter of the National Campers and Hikers Association. About twice a month, the members of this club would go camping at a New Jersey state park. Some of their favorite places to camp included Swartswood, Stokes, and Allaire State Parks.

In June of 1972, I completed my first year of college.

Valli noted that though people may come to the organization with one need, their situation is such that they usually have more needs. Norwescap is not just one program but a portfolio of services. About 90% of its funding comes from the government (federal, state, county, and municipal) and 10% from donors and grants. The latter helps in funding programs where participation might have been restricted by government rules.Norwescap offers services in the area of education with early childhood education, child care, and the Sussex County Community College “Degree Up” program being some examples. “[We are] the leading early childhood education non-profit in the northwest corner of the state. We are a major Head Start provider,” noted Valli. Norwescap has Head Start centers scattered around four different counties.

Another area Norwescap addresses is employment. Valli talked about the Career and Life Transitions Center and the Pathways 2 Prosperity program. A Career and Life Transitions Center helps those who haven’t been in the workforce for a while or are entering it for the first time or need to upscale. Valli noted that one example of a person who graduated the program is a woman now on the Norwescap board. “She had three kids, all of whom had special needs. Her husband, at some point, decided that that was too much for him and he left, and then she had a struggle…[to] figure out on her own [what to do]. She had left a career in New York to raise her family and now she’s on her own, and so she didn’t know where to turn. She called her Career and Life Transitions Center, didn’t do anything for a few months, and then called again.” Valli notes that the woman, though shy at first, completed the program and built her network (through peer-to-peer sharing and support) and is now pursuing a career in corporate America.

analysis done has shown that those who participate in the Degree Up program are much more likely than their counterparts to complete their studies and matriculate. “It shows you that sometimes you really just need a little support to help you get through….. most community college kids are probably holding a job somewhere. They have other things going on, so having a little bit of support to get them through the rough patches really helps improve their outcome,” said Valli.

A fifth area Norwescap helps with is housing and community development. Valli said this area touches on everything to do with housing from homeless prevention programs to rental assistance and much more. He noted that in the borough of Sussex, Norwescap runs an 11 -unit senior housing complex. It also does housing counseling, helping people save for a home, providing them with information on how to get to

“When a community is engaged, you get better health outcomes,” shared Valli as he started to talk about the last strategic area in which Norwescap offers help: Volunteerism and Civic Engagement. “We help people to advocate for themselves, advocate for their communities.” He noted that through a tax credit program, Norwescap was able to purchase a single-family home which had been an abandoned lodgings bar, renovate it and will be turning it over in a couple of months to a low income family. “So that’s taking what was a vacant home for over a dozen years in downtown Phillipsburg …on the main track, by the way, making it into a viable home, helping to improve not just the family’s asset but also to help improve the neighborhood,” said Valli. In addition, he shared, “We did more than that. We’ve been able to purchase banners and flags to help market businesses and put planters in downtown Phillipsburg.” Norwescap has also organized community

AREA A woman had two cigarettes, her kid in the car, nowhere to live and didn’t know where to go. Another woman, who had left her job to be a stay-at-home mom and was suddenly abandoned by her husband, needed to get back into the workforce and was looking for help. Struggling students at Sussex County Community College needed tutoring and other support, and low-income families were missing out on tax refunds because they needed guidance in completing their tax returns. These are just a few of the examples of people helped by Norwescap, a non-profit organization. Started as part of the war on poverty during the Johnson administration, Norwescap is a $22,000,000 comprehensive non-profit social service organization dedicated to serving people and moving them from a place of being in poverty, or on the verge of poverty, to the point where they and their families are thriving. It also helps people advocate for their communities and much more. Serving Hunterdon, Warren, Morris, Somerset and Sussex counties, Norwescap ’s corporate office is at 350 Marshall Street in Phillipsburg. Recently, Mark Valli, Norwescap’s CEO, talked about the organization and gave just a few examples of the services provided through the six strategic areas which Norwescap helps: education, employment, health and nutrition, financial capacity building, housing and energy service, and volunteer and civic engagement.Whilethe organization helps those in poverty, Valli noted that a large percentage of those it helps are ALICEs: Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed. That means that they are people who are working but are just one

payment, one illness, one paycheck away from struggling.

Norwescap: A Portfolio of Services to Help Those in Need

eachNorwescapother. also helps with financial capacity building, improving the financial well-being of low income individuals and families. Valli shared two of the programs that fall under that. One program, VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), offers free tax help to low-moderate income individuals and families, including young adults, adults, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and those with limited English. Another program helps participants to open a savings account, with Norwescap matching the funds put into it, to save for a purchase of a major asset like a Healthhome.and nutrition are areas many know Norwescap for. It has a food bank, which means that it is a distribution center. It supplies food to food pantries and soup kitchens in Sussex, Warren, and Hunterdon counties. Norwescap provides about two million pounds of food per year. Another example of what it does in the area of health and nutrition is WIC. “We are the WIC (Women, Infants, Children) provider in four counties,” shared Valli. Norwecap provides supplemental nutritional assistance to women who are either pregnant or who have kids all the way through age five. Additional services include health screenings, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, including lactation consultant services, and referrals to health and social services. Another of the ways Norwescap helps is by providing education on chronic diseases and access to free cancer screenings and other healthcare resources through its Health Connections program.

get- togethers and organized community events. Right now, the focus has been on Phillipsburg but that will be expanded.

A few of the Norwescap Food Bank staff load and oversee a large delivery. Norwescap provides about two million pounds of food per year to pantries and soup kitchens.

Helping families is a big part of what Norwescap is all about.

that point where they’re able to purchase their own home. Also, Norwescap provides supplemental support to help those having problems paying utility bills, getting a tank of oil, air conditioning, etc.

In addition, some of that money went to helping businesses establish an online presence and e-commerce so they could pivot the way they were doing business. Also, Norwescap has a variety of volunteer opportunities including ones through Americorps and AmeriCorps seniors. People can find out more about those by looking at the Norwescap website.

Norwescap works with adults to help them build skills, find better employment opportunities, re-enter the workforce and maintain their employment over time.

“[Also,] we are the childcare resource referral agency for three counties so anybody who needs childcare can call us and ask for advice. People who are having a hard time paying for childcare can call us and apply for a subsidy,” In addition, “every licensed child care provider in our footprint gets training, technical assistance, and support,” shared Valli. However, it is not just the educational needs of young children that Norwescap helps. Another example of its services in the Degree Up program. Valli shared that “a good percentage of community college students are struggling financially.” Norwescap provides a computer lounge, volunteers who tutor and provide a willing ear to listen (when needed), an on-site food pantry and information on Norwescap services. Valli shared that

One of Valli’s favorite stories is how Norwescap was able to help small businesses when they were shut down due to COVID-19. “We were able to access funding from the state to provide direct grants, over $500,000 in direct grants, to small businesses to keep them afloat…. to pay their utility bills, to be able to help pay their rent, able to help pay for PPE and other things, so we literally invested half a million dollars in small businesses …to keep them alive during COVID-19.”

Valli noted that for those in need, it is easy to get help. All they have to do is click on the green “Get Assistance” button the homepage of the website. Norwescap’s website is www. norwescap.org

Menstrual cycle management: Women in their teenage years are known to have significantly more painful and longer lasting menstrual periods then they have at any other point in their life. By taking a detailed patient history and discussing the severity of symptoms a physician can often help a patient achieve a more manageable and less uncomfortable menstrual cycle. Many patients are surprised to learn that their cycles can be significantly improved. Cyclic NSAID usage and hormonal contraception are two methods that assist patients with their uncomfortable menstrual cycles.

Now that class is in session, early fall is a great time to focus on gynecological care. A gynecologist is a doctor that specializes in women’s health and reproductive capabilities. Below is a list of the services that gynecologists can provide to college age women returning to Birthschool.control: College is often the time that women begin to take birth control for the first time. Health classes and information that is obtained through commercials and media about birth control fail to present the wide range of birth control options. Birth control pill usage is the most common type of birth control method that women use besides condoms. Most birth control pills are a combination of both estrogen and progesterone and must be taken daily to prevent pregnancy. For those women to whom oral contraception is contraindicated other longer acting methods such as progesterone injections, intrauterine devices and subdermal implants (Nexplanon) can be used instead. These longer acting methods have greater patient compliance as well as increased protection against pregnancy. Depending on your medical history, your gynecologist can prescribe a birth control method that best addresses your medical needs.

Unfortunately, many cases of STI’s are asymptomatic and this makes routine yearly screening absolutely essential for adequate health and maintenance. Bacterial infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea can present long term health risks if they are allowed to go untreated for large periods of time. In addition, a gynecologist can discuss with the patient safer sex practices and ways to decrease the spread of STI’s in general.

His next big accomplishment and thrill was getting to go to the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games in Korea. He was in Josh Pauls’ skates eight years later. “It was the dream for a long time, and to have it come to fruition, it was almost a full circle moment for me and my family,” Wallace says. “After having gone through so much uncertainty, especially in those early years, it was like I finally crested that mountain; I’d finally come around. And you know, I think they (his family) knew before then that I was okay, and I was going to be fine long term, but I think that was a big old stamp now saying that that (his accident and leg amputation) no longer affects me, I’m doing what I want to do. It was great to go there and not only to win, but to be able to share it with my family. I know how rare of an opportunity that is. They were in the building when I won and I got to celebrate with them after. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen in Beijing, so I know how rare of an opportunity that is to be able to do, especially with how large of a group that came to Korea. I know a lot of other athletes aren’t as fortunate to

AREA - For Jack Wallace, it’s been two Winter Paralympic Games Team USA Sled Hockey gold medals in a row. His first was in 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, while the second was this past winter in Beijing, China, with a 5 - 0 whitewashing of Canada.

have such a large group of people travel across the world, so I was super honored, and it was unbelievable.”Wallacealso proudly represented the United States in the 2019 Word Championships in Hungary – where he again won a gold medal - and this past winter when he and Team USA again topped the world at the Winter Paralympics. “Going into Beijing, we were training six hours a day for almost a year straight,” Wallace says. “It was a monumental step. It went exactly according to plan. We won the entire tournament by a margin of 30 goals, and I think one team scored one goal against us. We did our job before the tournament preparing. And that was the plan: to be the most productive team there. And we certainly were.”

It was in 2008 when Wallace suffered a life-altering injury. He explains. “We were up in Lake George for a family vacation. It was a yearly tradition to go up there and either rent a lake house, or that year what we did was we camped out. You can rent campsites out on islands in the middle of the lake. It’s fantastic, it’s so nice, and it’s such a great spot. I’ve had so many great memories, and there’s just one pretty bad one.” Wallace and his sister were waterskiing off of the same boat. At one point, the boat came between both and he ended up getting hit by it.

disposal.”Wallace split his time between playing goalie and defense, and as a Devils rooter, he especially admired goalie, Martin Brodeur, and captain and defenseman, Scott Stevens. “I looked up to those guys a lot when I was a kid,” Wallace says. “It was more like players that I wanted to meet, and since then, I have had the pleasure and privilege to meet both of them. So that’s pretty fantastic. I think it’s just the mentality that they have. As far as Brodeur, he kind of has that crazy style where he’ll make the save by any means necessary, no matter how he has to move his body. And then Scottie Stevens is just absolutely tough as nails. One of the best shutdown defensemen ever, and what a lot of people don’t talk about is how many points he had, and how often he actually scored. He was known for his really big hits and being super tough on guys and not letting anyone get through the middle, but he actually put up some pretty decent numbers for a defenseman in his day, as well as being an unbelievable leader for that team and leading them to championships.”

And recently, he finished 10th in the world representing the US National Para canoe spring kayak team at the world championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia. “I’m very happy about that,” he says.

different things. As a normal 10-year-old kid when you’re in fifth grade or sixth grade, usually you’re not thinking about all your doctor’s appointments or about insurance or all that different stuff that comes into play. When I got thrust into that situation, having to rehab, having to learn how to do so many things again, having to go through those trials and tribulations, it really kind of changes the way you think and matures you much quicker.”

Wallace’s first international competition game was against the Republic of Korea. “It was fantastic,” he remembers with excitement. “I had never played internationally before. I was a rookie on the team, so they weren’t really sure what to expect of me and I wasn’t really sure what to expect of myself. But it was an honor and a privilege to get out there for the first time. I had goosebumps putting on that jersey and getting on the ice with all those

Wallace originally grew up in both Franklin Lakes and Oakland, New Jersey. His mom and dad, John and Barbara, raised Jack and his two brothers, Matt and Mike, and one daughter, Colleen. “My mom actually went to Ramapo High School,” Wallace says, “and then me and all my siblings, we all went to Indian Hills. It’s a great part of the country to live in. I’ve gotten the opportunity to travel a lot. And you know, northern Jersey is a really, really unique spot, and I think it really set me up for success. Moving forward in my life, the education I got at Indian Hills got me into every college I applied for, and set me up for success at the college I eventually did go to, and that was the College of New Jersey.”

brought that medal back home and showed it to all the kids at the Woodbridge program. Wallace remembers the moment. “He showed it to me and my dad, and when we were holding it, my dad turned to me and said, ‘What do you think about that? You could win one of these one day.” John Wallace’s words would be prophetic –twice. “From that point on, that kind of became the goal in the back of my mind. Once I was in high school, it became a serious endeavor to make the development team, and then make the national team.” In 2013, Wallace was selected for the first US national development team, spent three years playing for them, and in 2016 was rostered on the US National Team.

Like most kids, Wallace played a variety of sports growing up, but hockey became his favorite. “My older brother, he played hockey before I did. His idea of fun was to strap some pads on to me and throw me in a net in the driveway, so I would play goalie and he fired shots at me,” Wallace, a diehard New Jersey Devils fan, says with a laugh at the recollection. “I played organized ice hockey for a number of years, played roller hockey in my town, and I played street hockey with my friends. It’s just kind of a perfect mix between all the different sports, but it’s still super fast. It can be unbelievably brutal, very intense, but there’s still so much finesse and skill involved. I’m biased obviously, but I do think it’s one of the best sports out there to blend all the different assets that an athlete can use at their

Now an amputee, he and his parents in 2009 learned of sled hockey, and discovered a place in Woodbridge, New Jersey that provided it. Wallace began playing for a club called New Jersey Freeze, and he was a member of the team Woodbridge Warriors. “It was unbelievable,” Wallace remembers. “My mom loves to tell the story. I had a smile from ear to ear. It was always my favorite sport, and I went up to her at the end of the first practice and I just said, ‘I’m back on the ice!’ Now that’s one of her favorite things to say.”

The USGA Museum and Library also offers its Pynes Putting Course for visitors, a nine-hole course where each hole is a par two. Mod eled after the Himalayas put ting course in Saint Andrews, Scotland, museum goers have the opportunity to use replica clubs and balls and putt, en joying some link time.

“We predate Cooperstown, the Baseball Hall of Fame, by a couple of years,” says Lagle.

USGA Executive Commit tee member, Chicago’s George Blossom, Jr., suggested the idea of creating a golf mu seum. “At the time in 1935, there was very little space to store or display the artifacts,” Lagle explains. “What they did in the 1930s and 1940s is actually displayed a lot of the artifacts throughout the office space. There wasn’t an offi cial area for the museum.” In July of 1950, the USGA pur chased property in New York City, where they were able to dedicate a room specifically for displaying golf balls, etch ings, and photographs, and similar articles pertaining to the popular sport. The USGA purchased 62 Somerset Coun ty, New Jersey acres in 1972 and relocated from New York City, and the three-story home that John Russell Pope built in 1919 is now dedicated spe cifically to the museum. “The main level of the museum is what the public has access to, and between 2005 and 2008, the USGA Golf Museum and Library added 22,000 square feet of archival storage as well as exhibit space,” Lagle says.

The USGA Golf Museum and Library preserves and celebrates the history of golf, and fosters an appreciation of the game worldwide through collection stewardship, edu cation and outreach. For the golf history buff, the facility is a treasure. Between 4,000 to 8,000 people annually en ter through the doors and walk the halls of the oldest sports museum in the United States.

“I get excited walking in the beautiful historic house that John Russell Pope built,” Lagle says. “His architecture is just absolutely incredi ble. Even just walking up the driveway, you feel very excit ed. But then, just walking in and celebrating the history of the game - the very rich histo ry - not only of the game itself, but the amazing people that have played the game over the last 125 years.”

Only about 5% of the mu seum’s inventory is actually displayed. The museum also has artifacts and items that are in a climate-controlled facility below the main floor, with well over 750,000 pho

Rufino says. “Because having gone to those concerts, it gave me a love of classical music.”

Rufino conducted George Frideric Handel’s Messiah at Avery Fisher Hall in Lin coln Center for 26 years, and he many times took his West Morris Central students to ob serve. “I had taken the West Morris Central chorus to Rari tan Valley College for a choral day that was being sponsored. There were choirs from all over New Jersey that came and sang for each other, and then there was an adjudicator who made comments on how to improve your performance. The organization that spon sored that was the National Choral Council, which is the council that sponsors Messiah at Avery Fisher Hall.” David

Many of Rufino’s students now have careers in music, but not all. “I can’t begin to tell you the number of messages I get at Christmastime from for mer students who are not mu sicians that are now dispersed all over the United States. They tell me, ‘Every Christ mas we look for a performance of Messiah because of us do ing that in high school.’ Some are teachers, they’re engi neers, they’re scientists. They did not become musicians, but it meant so much to them, and it’s become a tradition for them and their families.”

Vincent Rufino will be sit ting at home in Succasunna, and makes the request to his smart speakers. “I can listen to anything I want to. Sometimes I’ll listen to the Beach Boys, sometimes I’ll listen to Sina tra, I’ll listen to Brahms. lis ten to Beethoven, and Mozart.

Vincent Rufino conducting Handel’s Messiah

Vincent Rufino Has Enjoyed a Rewarding Life of Music

Every afternoon at 12 o’clock when I’m eating lunch, I ask the smart speaker to connect me to WQXR, the classical music station in New York City. I listen in to ‘Mozart at Noon.”One would expect nothing less, perhaps, from a man who has made music – whether lis tening to it or teaching it – his life. Rufino is concluding this month a wonderful career of educating others as he departs Saint Elizabeth’s University after 12 years, this after the students of West Morris Cen

Randolph, who was the initial conductor for Messiah at Lin coln Center since its inception, was unable one year to do it, and passed Rufino’s name on to the head of the NCC. “He already knew of my work,” Rufino says. “They were very strongly based in education because they realized the fu ture audiences were coming from the youth.” He then adds another key point. “The or chestra director at West Mor ris Central and I worked very, very closely together. We took a survey one time and asked how many students had ever been to New York City, and we just figured it would be the majority, but that wasn’t the case. Very few from the Long Valley and Chester area had gone into New York City. That was the genesis of taking the kids to go to Avery Fisher Hall at that time.”

He would pay it forward. During his two years as a teacher at Hoboken High School, he saw to it that his students took in live concerts in Manhattan. One of those students was Julio Fernan dez, a guitarist for the popu lar jazz group, Spyro Gyra.

Facebook and said, “I’d love to see you. I haven’t seen you since you graduated.” Fernan dez asked his former teacher to come early and arranged to have him come to the dress ing room. “We had a nice re union,” Rufino says.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed working with Tracey. We were selling my mother’s home in East Hanover upon her passing in March 2022. Af ter several interviews with top area realtors, we chose Trac ey Franco. Tracey has a long track record of success in East Hanover and the immediate area. She is highly organized and on-point, and delivers her work with an assured, friend ly style. Tracey presented a detailed marketing plan of what she and Coldwell Bank er would do over on a sched ule. She made some critical suggestions in regards to up dates we could work on prior to listing to ready the home for sale. Tracey is highly pro fessional, detailed, and with Coldwell Banker can provide a transaction experience that any seller or buyer would respect. We thank her and Coldwell Banker for their partnership in the safe delivery of our moth er’s cherished home to a new family who will carry on the tradition of care she left as her legacy.
