Vetfest Presents Music and Food Trucks this May

By Megan Roche s winter comes to an end, people are itching to breakout those lawn chairs and blankets, longing for days of sunny weather and blue skies. On May 3 (raindate: May 17), head out to Roxbury’s Horseshoe Lake for a day of fun that benefits the greater community of homeless veterans.

Rich Goldberg, the mastermind behind Vetfest, was looking for a way to continue his efforts in helping the state’s homeless veteran population.

Through his work volunteering for Community Hope, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Goldberg has come to know many veterans throughout the area who have simply fallen on hard times. With a passion for music as well, Goldberg combined the two and decided on a concert to benefit them. The first ever Vetfest was held in 2019 and was a major success, raising over $24,000.

On May 3, beginning

at 12:00 noon, Horseshoe Lake at Succasunna will be grooving, all for a good cause. Vetfest has the best of food trucks and talent coming together to help New Jersey’s homeless veterans. Goldberg is encouraging families to come and spend the day, with lawn chairs and blankets in tow.

“Hang out for the day, there is going to be so much there to do for kids and adults. This is all about our veterans. The important thing is to give these

vets who have given so much for us, we want to give them a great day, all while raising money to support them. To be able to give them a great afternoon, just like anyone else coming out, that’s what we ultimately want to do.”

Goldberg stated proudly.

At the time this article was written, bands were still signing up to come and donate their time with a performance. Currently scheduled are The Frontiers, a Journey tribute

band, A Brothers Revival, an Allman Brothers tribute band, Sensational Soul Cruisers, a Motown and R&B band, The Best of the Eagles, an Eagles tribute band, and New York State of Mind, a Billy Joel tribute band.

“I’ve gotten to know so many of these veterans throughout our area. These veterans are humble people and grateful people. All they want to do is get back on their feet, and if we can give them a little step up, a little assistance, that’s really what it’s all about. They did their job and went out and served and did everything for us, and now what I ask people to do, is just to come out and have a fun day.” Goldberg said.

Food trucks include; the Empanada Truck, Cubano X-Press, Kona Ice, Jersey Rollz, Clubhouse Dogs, Cas’s Polish Food, Thai Food Addict, Bearded One BBQ, and Wood Fired Pizza.

Reverend Beau Nelson Shepherds Two Congregations in an Active, Energetic Way

By Steve Sears everend Beau Nelson is Pastor of two congregations: Saint Mark Lutheran Church of Morristown and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Florham Park. He started at the latter in May 2019 and was officially installed as Pastor in both churches on the same day, last November 9, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. respectively.

He had been serving at another Lutheran church in Jersey City prior to his new callings.

Nelson has been referred to as “young and energetic,” a description which draws a laugh from the 34-year-old.

However comical he finds it the description may be an apropos one. On Sundays, he has 9:15 services at Saint Mark, and then treks in his car 12 combined miles north up Route 287 and east on

Route 24 to Good Shepherd for 11:00 worship. “The difficulty,” he says, “is I can’t be with both congregations as I’d like to be,” he says.

Both Good Shepherd and Saint Mark within the past few years had pastors leave either due to retirement or switch to a different congregation, and were every weekend served by visiting clerics in the pulpit. Nelson was named the permanent “leader of the flock” when both worked with the Bishop of the New Jersey Synod of the Lutheran Church and agreed to a Shared Ministry, where Nelson is part-time Pastor of both.

“Oh, my goodness! It’s incredibly exciting to be in both of these communities,” Nelson says regarding being Pastor of two parishes.

“Excitement and possibility.

The folks here at Good Shepherd are committed to this

ministry continuing for decades to come, and because they are committed to the Gospel message being proclaimed in word and deed, they are committed to doing what God is calling us to do.

It’s very exciting, but at the same time we also have to live in the here and now.” At Saint Mark, there is a hunger to be a bigger community presence. “To do the work Jesus has called us to do; not just sit in church for an hour and just leave. They want to be a real part of the community.”

Both congregations have about 100 members but are different. Florham Park is an older in age congregation with a lot of emphasis on activities for senior citizens, the congregation primarily that age group. “They are seniors with lots of energy,” says Nelson, who will be married this upcoming Easter Sunday for one year to

his wife, Alexis. “They do so much in the community, and there are so many organizations that we partner with (a list of how the congregation serves can be found at www. good-shepherd-church. net). Nelson calls the reach a “global and local connection.” “While we are an aging congregation, there is lots of energy. They appreciate my energy and enthusiasm, and I also appreciate their will-

ingness to dive right in and be excited about ministry.”

As for Saint Mark, there is not a large senior membership, but is a working age group congregation with a number of families with babies to college students.

“A lot of our ministry there is focusing on, especially as we’re dreaming ahead, how do we - knowing that families are very busy and still want to have some spiritual

connections and be filled spiritually – serve as Jesus told us to serve our neighbors? We’re working on that,” says Nelson.

Supply and Demand, Hoarding, Price Gouging -- and the Coronavirus

As the saying goes, “Nothing is certain but death and taxes.” I would add, “and anti-price gouging legislation in times of crisis.” Yet price increases in the face of sudden shortages are an important impetus to restore supply and demand market conditions that are closer to normal.

As many of us have experienced in the past few weeks, buying toilet paper, hand sanitizer and face masks has become more difficult and more expensive.

The reason, of course, is that unusually large numbers of people are rushing to buy these and other products that might prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It’s normal for people to stock up on supplies during crises. The immediate results are empty store shelves, soon followed by higher prices.

When this happens, politicians around the globe demand an end to the price hikes. The goal is to improve consumer access to the products now in higher demand.

In New Jersey, for instance, at least 10 retailers have received warnings from the government to stop their so-called price gouging. Similarly, the French government announced that it won’t tolerate such price increases and will soon decree a price ceiling on face masks and hand sanitizers. In a move guaranteed to worsen and lengthen the shortages, French officials are even going so far as to appropriate stocks of masks. Just this week, the Department of Justice threatened to act against “bad actors” who raise prices during this time of panic. The list goes on and on.

While well-intentioned, such heavy-handed intervention is a mistake on many levels: First, the rise in prices conveys nothing more than the unusually intense surge in demand for these products. Consumers

Mark Shields value these products more now than they did just a few weeks ago, which is reflected by the higher prices.

But here’s another reality: If prices are kept artificially low, there’s little incentive for shoppers not to buy as much as they can. Of course, only those shoppers lucky enough to get to the stores first can do so. Their hoarding then leaves nothing for shoppers in line behind them.

The fact is there’s no better means of slowing the rising demand -- and, especially, reducing excessive hoarding -- than allowing the very price hikes that governments are trying to prevent.

But price hikes have another important advantage: They create the necessary incentives for entrepreneurs to shift resources toward activities that increase the supply of these goods.

The higher prices encourage higher levels of production for goods like masks and hand sanitizers, which then increases supply. Even some companies that couldn’t afford to produce these goods in the past will be prompted by high prices to now do so. The Japanese electronics giant Sharp started to use its TV factories to make surgical masks when the domestic continued on page 6

CDC: Centers for Damaged Credibility

think I’m where most sane people are on the coronavirus outbreak: -Concerned but not panicked.

-Calm but not apathetic.

-Taking reasonable precautions but remaining skeptical of what all the purportedly “best experts” here in the United States are telling us about every aspect of their belated crisis management and response (especially on their pimping of vaccine development to prevent the disease).

Here are some plain, nonhysterical facts: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control is a bloated federal government agency with a long history of incompetence, fraud, secrecy, mission creep and shady alliances with both social justice causes on the left and private corporations on the big business right. The “deep state” of entrenched bureaucrats embedded in the Beltway bowels is alive and thriving at the CDC. The unelected elites who’ve occupied top offices at the public health-industrial complex are hostile to public scrutiny while clamoring for ever-ballooning budgets. Their recommendations have often been detrimental to citizens’ well-being and freedom.

And, yes, many of the scientists who work there are rabidly anti-conservative and anti-Trump.

It’s a brazen lie that President Donald Trump “slashed” CDC funding, which is being used as an excuse for the agency’s coronavirus unpreparedness. Cognitively impaired and truth-challenged Joe Biden made the claim during last week’s Democratic debate that these purported “Draconian cuts” put Americans at risk. But Trump’s budget proposal to cut some sliver of CDC fat has never been enacted, and Congress increased funding, instead.

At nearly $7 billion, CDC’s annual budget is more than 200% larger than it was two decades ago. On top of that, a shady big business lobbying group called Corporate Friends of CDC has raised hundreds of millions of supplemental dollars -- which raises serious conflict-of-interest

Tom Coburn’s fiscal audit of the agency discovered vulgar expenditures including CDC syphilis prevention funds spent to host a “safe-sex” event with a porn star, CDC HIV/AIDS prevention funds spent on a transgender beauty pageant, and $45 million in CDC funding spent on conferences featuring prostitutes, protests and beach parties.

Despite the flood of money, the agency been caught flat-footed on outbreak after outbreak. They squander untold millions on other health threats in favor of pushing gun control and nanny state hobby horses (TV violence, helmet laws, video games, anti-bullying campaigns and explicit sex education, for example). CDC has one primary job -- Disease Control -- but has managed to botch it without ever learning from past failures.

Let me remind you of some of the CDC’s long history of royal screw-ups: -The notorious 1976 swine flu vaccine scandal was catalyzed by mass hysteria whipped up by CDC junk scientists clamoring for more money; Congress obliged and nearly 45 million Americans were unnecessarily jabbed with a vaccine for a disease that had fizzled by the time the shots were ready. -In 1999, the CDC misspent $22.7 million appropriated for chronic fatigue syndrome

and was investigated in 2001 for squandering $13 million on hepatitis C research.

-In 2000, the agency essentially lied to Congress about how it spent up to $7.5 million earmarked each year since 1993 for research on the deadly hantavirus. “Instead,

Government officials (and pundits) never seem to learn (or remember) that in times of crisis, naturally rising prices are necessary to guarantee that goods, services and inputs are used to maximum social advantage.

When governments prevent price hikes, they unwittingly (SET ITAL)create(END ITAL) shortages of vital supplies. Unfortunately, such government intervention makes it harder for people to recover from disasters or, today, to protect themselves from the coronavirus.

Think about it. Without price fluctuations to provide a signal to manufacturers, how will they know by how much or how quickly they need to increase production? If prices are kept artificially low, factory owners have no way to know for sure that actual demand (and not just hoarding) has risen enough to justify a change in their production schedules. Second, if governments keep prices from adjusting upward, the additional demand for masks might not result in enough

revenue to cover the extra costs of producing and shipping more masks.

The bottom line is that by keeping prices artificially low, governments around the world encourage artificially high demand, from hoarders, for example. Necessary increases to the supply chain will also be discouraged, which results in unnecessary shortages, long lines of desperate customers, empty shelves and black markets in dark alleys.

Aren’t we better off when products are actually on the shelves and available for purchase, even if only at higher prices? When no such products are to be found, except by the politically and socially connected, ordinary citizens lose out.

apparently without asking Congress, the CDC spent much of the money on other programs that the agency thought needed the funds more,” The Washington Post disclosed at the time. The diversions were impossible to trace because of shoddy CDC bookkeeping practices.

-In 2009, the CDC recalled 800,000 doses of swine flu vaccine for children ages 6 months to 3 years after the products manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur failed potency tests.

-In 2012, the CDC’s main building housing infectious anthrax, SARS and monkeypox gases was discovered to have been leaking deadly pathogens due to a flawed engineered airflow system.

-In 2014, the CDC’s lackadaisical response to Ebola virus gave the greenlight to Patient Zero Thomas Eric Duncan and infected medical personnel to board commercial airlines while ill -- exposing untold numbers of travelers to the deadly disease. Expensive isolation chambers that had been subsidized by taxpayers to the tune of $15 million sat buried in a Georgia warehouse.

-For the past few years, the agency has employed a fear campaign to induce Americans to get regular flu shots (formulated based on guesswork) using flawed statistics and despite international scientific conclusions that there is “no evidence” to support the CDC’s assumptions that the vaccine reduces transmission of the virus or the risk of

potentially deadly complications.

-Just this week, the Informed Consent Action Network reported astonishing results from its lawsuit against the CDC to obtain scientific documentation for the agency’s claim that “vaccines do not cause autism” -- specifically for the first seven vaccines given to your child in their first six months of life. CDC had stonewalled, and then finally produced 20 studies -- 18 of which were irrelevant to ICAN’s public records request and two of which suggest that vaccines may indeed cause autism. In other words: The CDC is lying while continuing to smear vaccine critics as “conspiracy theorists” and public health threats.

As if to underscore my point about this agency’s misdirected priorities and rank political pandering, the CDC director this week found it more urgent to condemn Republicans as racist for accurately describing the origins of the virus from Wuhan, China, than to do his job.

Informed diagnosis: The “best people” -- who have now been rewarded with more than $8.3 billion in new “emergency funding” -- are not in charge.

“My dad taught me that when you see someone in uniform, you thank them.

My son is 16 and he will not see a servicemember without walking up to them and saying thank you. I wish everybody would teach their kids to respect and honor them because without them, we have nothing.”

Goldberg said.

I Remember Dad:

Reflections of Dad’s Camp Meeting Sermons

By Richard Mabey Jr. ost people know that my Dad was a Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 170 for over 25 years. And, most people know that my Dad served as Vice President of the Beavertown Historical Society for over 10 years.

But, very few people know that my Dad served as a Lay Leader of the Boonton United Methodist Church for nearly 20 years.

Dad was also served with a Christian outreach group that presented evangelistic meetings for Methodist churches throughout the USA. Dad, with Mom’s supporting help, would present sermons for weekend camp meetings, mostly along the eastern seaboard. In time, my Dad developed a very sincere and earnest quality

in his sermons.

To clarify, Dad would not be the only speaker on the agenda for the weekend evangelic camp meetings. A good dozen or so individuals would present sermons for the weekend meetings.

Dad took this job very seriously. I was so very proud of him for his wholesome, down-to-earth, heart-felt stories that he would share during his Christian presentations.

Dad would draw upon his recollections of his years as a Scoutmaster, the people he met along his travels as a long-distance truck driver, his memories of serving in the Seventh Army Air Corps during World War II, and of course his role as a husband and father.

spent studying and preparing for one of his sermons.

This was an era before home computers. So, my Dad had to study his Bible the old-fashioned way, without the benefit of Internet cross referencing. Dad loved the Gospel of John.

He also often referred to the Book of Psalms and the Book of Proverbs, a lot of times in his Christian talks.

I remember that there was a distinct meter to my Dad’s sermons. Dad was not an emotional speaker.

He did not raise his voice.

He simply spoke in a most steadfast, compelling manner that rang with a truth of sincerity and a poetic earnest quality. I was always, all so proud of my Dad for all of his hard work to bring truth to the people who came to the camp meetings.

Now, that I’m 66 years old, I find myself reflecting more and more of all of my Dad’s wonderful accomplishments in his life.

I so deeply regret that I never videotaped any of Dad’s sermons. They were often simple stories of life lessons and would have a Biblical reference. Hanover Wind Symphony Celebrates 35th Anniversary

By Dawn M Chiossi ith a credo of bringing music to the people and people to music, the Hanover Wind Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its 35th anniversary.

Unique in their construction, wind symphonies are made up exclusively of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. The Hanover Wind Symphony also holds another honor; they are one of the few outstanding community-based adult wind bands in New Jersey.

Founded in 1985, the Hanover Wind Symphony was literally born out of the spirit of the community. Starting out as a university band at the Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Florham/Madison campus, the Hanover Wind Symphony transformed itself into a community band when the university’s music department closed.

With talent and a belief that music fills the soul, heart and brain, the Hanover Wind Symphony had a deep desire to share it with others.

According to William Trusheim, Chairman of the Board, and proud trumpet player in the ensemble, the members of the Hanover Wind Symphony are more than just a band or even a gaggle of friends; they are a family under the fabric of notes and harmonies.

He explains that the prime reason for this is the dedication and commitment that everyone puts into the band.

Filled with approximately 65 to 70 diverse members, they share a love of music and a desire to excel. “We are different than other community bands. With us, you don’t see members treating it as just an outlet or an afterthought.

Our musicians give their best.” Trusheim points to their recent February concert as a perfect example. “Every five years, Hanover Wind Symphony celebrates an anniversary, but this year it was extra special. Nine of our charter members attended this anniversary. That’s unheard of in a community band,” he enthuses.

He relates that a spot on the Hanover Wind Symphony is so coveted, that there is a waiting list for aspiring musicians to join.

The 35th Anniversary Concert was an emotional one.

“The opening and closing of the show were definite highlights,” Trusheim praises. “We opened the show with the Athletic Festival March by Prokofiev--the same exact number that we debuted in our first concert in 1985. Closing the show, we debuted a new piece from a local composer, Peter Sciaino, entitled ‘Sound Paints the Sky.’ Peter created it specifically for this concert. “ He shares that Sciaino was inspired by the Native American legend of “The Indian Paintbrush”. In this story, a young artist desires to paint an awe inspiring sunset that regularly fills his sky but he does not have the colors to do so. One day he sees a vision of his tribal predecessors telling him to use his talents to serve his people and he will accomplish great things. “Peter was so inspired by its themes of creativity and sharing that he translated the legend into music and compared it to the Hanover Wind Symphony itself. Playing it was so moving.” Trusheim relates.

Sharing their gift of music throughout the years, the

Hanover Wind Symphony has become a wonderful community source for live music. Developing an attitude of gratitude, this nonprofit seeks to give back to others and pay it forward. From children’s concerts to high schools, free concerts as a gift back to the town twice a year, and their annual church fundraiser at Christmas, the Hanover Wind Symphony has not only entertained but also inspires young people to continue playing long after their formal schooling has ended.

Playing in and around greater Morris County for more than a quarter of a century, the Hanover Wind Symphony is extremely excited about their concerts coming up including their outreach concert with Parsippany Hills High School, the popular summer gazebo series at Memorial Junior School in Whippany, and the gazebo concert at Ginty Field.

For Trusheim, his musical journey has been all about the symbiotic relationship that the Hanover Wind Symphony family has with the audience; and he is having the time of his life. “Ever since I’ve retired, I’ve wanted to go back to my roots playing music, and we have a unified desire to play music at its highest level. It’s really important to have bands play really good music and at the same time play an accessible program to engage the audience.

The idea that we are giving a live performance can be rare today. The audience enjoys seeing what it’s all about.”

East Hanover Woman Recalls Performance Past as Former New Jersey Devils Dancer

By: Megan Roche s someone who danced all of their life, Gabrielle Vecchio knows the competitive game that is played and the high standards that dancers hold themselves to. When she had the opportunity to dance professionally, she took advantage without hesitation. From 20122013, Vecchio was a dancer for the now defunct New Jersey Devils Dancers.

Vecchio, who grew up in East Hanover, began dancing at the age of three.

Throughout her training at Nicole’s Broadway Dance Company, she found a love for hip hop dance unlike any other. When she turned 14, she began training to go pro.

“When I went to Nicole’s, I was introduced to a legendary hip hop choreographer. Hip hop was always my thing, I wasn’t

really into the tap or the ballet although I did compete as a member of their competition dance team.

I started competing in the sixth grade. Nicole’s Broadway Dance Company really molded me into the mindset that I needed to have to make the pros. I was in private classes every week for four years. I became extremely disciplined and mature at a young age,” Vecchio said.

As she was training for the pros, Vecchio had to give up Friday night parties and football games, while her weekends were filled with dance competitions.

Looking back, all that sacrifice was worth it when Vecchio auditioned for the New Jersey Devils Dancers. Vecchio first auditioned for the New York Jets Flight Crew, and when she didn’t make it, she was ready to hang up her dance shoes and call it

a career.

“I remember calling my Dad after I didn’t make it through the semifinal round for the Flight Crew. I said ‘Dad, I’m not doing this anymore, it’s obviously way too hard and I don’t have the talent.’ He told me that my mother and him paid so much money for me to take private classes and that I’d danced my whole life, he said I’m not going to hear that my kid doesn’t want to try out for another team. Just look online and see what’s out there,” Vecchio said.

After researching online like Dad said, Vecchio found

two auditions; the New York Knicks dancers and the New Jersey Devils dancers. Wanting to give it one last shot to appease her dad, she gave the New Jersey Devils a try.

After a very rigorous audition process, Vecchio was a finalist for the team, but she still had work to do. The Devils instituted a fan vote category during the season she was hoping to land a coveted spot on the ice. The 18th member of the dance squad was picked by fans around the globe.

With the help of promotion from her twin sister, Gianna, Vecchio secured a victory by a massive landslide.

“Not only did I have to try out, I had two weeks of intense marketing of myself. In 2012, there was a national hockey lockout. That year, the boss wanted to do something to keep the fans engaged. For two weeks, myself and two other girls had to go online and vote to earn the 18th spot. I had family members, organizations, companies, colleges, all voting for me every single day. We had to do a dance, video interviews, a bio, and a photoshoot so that we could let the fans learn more about us to choose who they wanted,” Vecchio shared.

Vecchio looks back on her time as a Devils dancer with a major smile and nothing but fond memories. The excitement and passion that she felt as a member of the squad still stays with her to this day. There are moments that she’ll never forget, such as the moment that she stepped out as a Devils Dancer for the very first time.

“The moment I came upstairs from our dressing room, it was just hundreds of thousands of people just wanting to take photos with us, asking for our autographs. My dad continued on page 15

The Little Red Schoolhouse: A Doorway into Florham Park’s Past

By Steve Sears nce rural, now a very busy suburb, one need just visit a gem of a structure in Florham Park to see (better yet, feel) the contrast in years.

The Little Red Schoolhouse Museum, also known as Columbia School District No. 5 Schoolhouse, was built in the fall of 1866 and opened in 1867. It was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and then was re-instated on June 6, 1986.

It serves as the home of the Florham Park Historic Preservation Commission and is located on the corner of Ridgefield Avenue and Columbia Turnpike, a very busy intersection.

However, standing in front of the red, one-story schoolhouse and doing your best to tune out the street traffic noise, you can imagine farms dominating the area, the clang of the bell in the tower above the tiny school sounding, and local children entering the front door to be educated.

Suzanne Herold is Chair of the Florham Park Historical Commission and has been a member for seven years. “The Little Red Schoolhouse is at the heart of Florham Park,” she says. “For our community, it symbolizes our history and our future. The LRSH has been standing at Ridgedale and Columbia for longer than Florham Park has been incorporated as a town. We’re fortunate to have town leaders who are committed to the ongoing preservation of the Little Red Schoolhouse and a dedicated team of volunteers who apply for grants and work to keep the LRSH open to the public. The Schoolhouse reminds us of the importance of education – not only in the past, but also today. The LRSH shows the evolution and development of Florham Park from a rural area to

a suburban community.”

Bushra Omar and her daughter, Lara Alesselan, have lived in Florham Park for 4 ½ years. “So many times,” says Omar with emphasis when asked how often she and Lara had driven by the Little Red Schoolhouse and, due to a busy schedule, were unable to visit. “We always wanted to come and visit, and we just never did. It’s always open at times when we have other commitments. Even now – we’re actually supposed to be at a Girl Scout event,” she says with a laugh.

Lara turned back the clock 153 years, sitting at one of the

period school desks in the building. “I wanted to sit on it,” she says of the desk’s adjoining seat, a huge smile on her face. Her Mom soon joined her, sitting at a neighboring desk, and when both exited, Lara pulled the taut rope inside the building’s entrance, causing the old bell to ring loudly to the neighborhood. “We thought we should stop here first,” Omar says.

Much local history is on display, the hardwood floor sturdily supporting aged photos and documents, an upright piano, 19th century women’s dresses, tools from a local, former cider mill, signage from old properties in town, and much more. A super friendly staff is on hand to answer questions when the location is open.

“The Florham Park Historic Preservation Commission welcomes visitors to the LRSH and hopes that people from all over New Jersey will visit to learn more about the one room schoolhouse model,” says Herold. “Local residents are invited to come share their memories of the LRSH as our town landmark – some people might remember seeing the LRSH moved a little further away from the center of Columbia Turnpike in the late 1970s. The community can support the LRSH by visiting, sharing old photographs, memorabilia, and stories, and by helping to preserve historic sites throughout their communities. Little Red Schoolhouse themed merchandise is also available.”

Morris County Heritage Commission Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

By: Michele DiPasquale he Morris County Heritage Commission celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and offers special programs to highlight relevant aspects of Morris County’s compelling history. The programs will include topics that celebrate and recognize much of Morris County’s rich history.

For history buffs, The Morris County Heritage Commission is a fountain of riveting information. It is the Heritage Commission that designates points and places of relevant history by providing the site markers to honor historical locations, much of which date as far back as the 18th century.

The Historic Site Markers are those familiar dark red signs with white lettering seen frequently throughout Morris County, marking locations of historical interest. The historic site marker program has been in place since 1975. For those interested in the process of site marking, there is information available to read about the guidelines for marker placement on their website.

It’s fascinating to look up some of the site markers on the site, which is crammed with relevant, engrossing historical facts and points of interest scattered throughout Morris County.

“The Commission is also charged with conserving and preserving materials in the County archives,” explained Peg Shultz, Director of Archives and Heritage Affairs.

When asked what makes Ms. Shultz and her colleagues passionate about Morris County’s history, Shultz explained that the staff, as well as volunteer members at MCHC, hold degrees in history.

“Exploring, understanding, teaching and appreciating the county’s history and heritage shows us how the past has shaped who we are today, as a community and society,” she said.

“The Commission does this through caring for the County Archives, which holds rare documents related to the county from as early as the 18th century, offering public programming in a variety of Best Practices workshops which cover things like Long Range Plans and grant writing skills, along with programs on a wide array of topics central to Morris County and New Jersey history,” Shultz explained.

For those wondering what the process of getting something site marked is all about, Shultz recommended going to the website and searching for Marker Guidelines.

“And then, an applicant should read over the guidelines, call or come into the office to discuss the application and process. If the site meets the criteria, a member of the staff will assist with the application. The final application that will be presented to the members of the commission for consideration will consist of the application form and materials supporting their request,” Shultz said.

continued from page 12 was there, and he just lost it. He couldn’t believe that all of the work had finally gotten me where I wanted. That was a moment I don’t think I’m ever going to forget. It was something where I realized that all the hard work and all the anger about not being able to do normal teenage things was truly worth it on every level,” Vecchio shared.

Vecchio comes from a big loving Italian family and notes that she couldn’t have danced for the Devils without her family by her side, showing up to support her at every game played at The Rock.

“I truly thank my parents for all of this.

They are the real champions and winners.

It’s a true testament that you can fulfill any goal with your parents right next to you and mine were always there. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my twin. She was my best friend and always had my back, before any

of this even started,” Vecchio said.

Currently 27, Vecchio now enjoys a fulltime career at Verizon as a talent acquisition specialist. While she may not be in the dance studio much anymore, the greater life lessons of being a competitive dancer have stayed with her. One of the most important? Confidence and the belief that you can truly have what you want.

“Dance shaped me to be independent, strong and taught me how to believe in myself. When you are going into an audition with 300 beautiful and talented girls, you have to truly believe that there is nobody else in the room but you. That really shaped me going into the corporate world, especially as I was interviewing for jobs because there are three things you can control; go in with the best handshake, the best smile, and the best attitude and you really can do whatever you want in life.”

Morris County Vocational School District Academy for the Performing Arts Dance Program Celebrates 20th Year

By Steve Sears he Morris County Vocational School District Academy for the Performing Arts Dance program is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special concert on May 15.

The event will be held at County College of Morris in Randolph.

MCVSD head Dance instructor, Lisa Peluso, has been working hard to combine the artistry of seasoned alumni and professional artists to make the special production in May happen. The well thought out and planned, 12-piece program should last about two hours.

Ruth Clark, the program’s founder back in 2000, will also attend that evening and speak about the program’s history.

Peluso herself was a student of Clark’s while the latter was a professor at Montclair State University.

“I’m excited about it,” says Peluso, who has been at MCVSD since 2015 and is in charge of planning the May event. “I’m having a good time because I get to bring all the partners together that’s helped the program grow obviously the founder, Ruth Clark - and a lot of the guest artists who are performing who have their own companies and who have worked with the students, they’re performing.” Regarding collaboration with the three companies - 10 Hairy Legs (the first guest artist to work with the program), Freespace Dance, and Von Howard Project - she says, “They’re all really New Jersey-based dance companies, all professional, and all three have been around I

think for over a decade.” The evening also highlights current students, dance program alumni (some from the initial graduating class in 2004), and the County College of Morris Dance program. Peluso also knows many of the alum who will take part, because she was a guest artist near the pro-

gram’s 2000 inception.

Krystal Beck is Morris Hills Regional District Supervisor of Social Studies and Supervisor Academy for the Performing Arts. “The Academy for the Performing Arts is a full-time, comprehensive high school program that offers students a unique high school experience combining focused and comprehensive academics with Career and Technical Education classes in the respective career area” she says. “The Morris County Academy for the Performing Arts is housed at Morris Knolls High School and is open to any student in Morris County through a competitive application process and audition. Students apply in the fall of their eighthgrade year and have a choice among three majors: dance, theatre, and vocal performance.” She then speaks to the attraction of the program. “Students have the opportunity to fulfill their graduation requirements while following their passion to develop their craft. Being a part of the academy affords students the unique opportunity to enroll in rigorous course work, work in state-of-the-art facilities, participate in master class workshops, and work with seasoned professionals from each field.”

The Academy for the Performing Arts Dance Program is tailored to prep students who seek careers right after high school or perhaps take up the same in college. and other related careers the department touches on in its curriculum. “What I noticed that they leave with which is great,” says Peluso, “is a lot of leadership skills, because their sophomore and junior year they get to choreograph their own pieces.” Students schedule auditions, research their piece, music and costume choices, hold an audition, then finally cast their piece. “They see it from the beginning all the way to the end,” Peluso adds with satisfaction.

Peluso says of May 15, “Hopefully it will be a great way to honor dance that’s been here in this county, at the Morris County Vocational School District. I think we a lot of the time put a lot of focus on non-arts things, and I think it’s really nice to do something. I’ve been here for 20 years, and it’s been supported.”

A Piece of Ukraine in Whippany

However, while being a place for Ukrainian Americans to share their culture and heritage, the cultural center also shares Ukrainian culture with the community through events, such as its Christmas and Easter Bazaars, food sales, and its biggest event of the year, a festival held each September. In addition, the center has other offerings for the community, is utilized by other organizations and rents out space for events.

Recently, board member, Alexandra Zawadiwsky shared about the center and, with Easter around the corner, some Ukrainian Easter traditions.

“The migration of Americans of Ukrainian descent, particularly families with children, to the suburbs and exurbs of western New Jersey presented a rare, but wonderful opportunity …… to establish a significant Ukrainian cultural and community center that is easily accessible to those who live in New Jersey, southern New York, eastern Pennsylvania, and even southwestern Connecticut. Such is the vision of our Ukrainian American Community.” explained Zawadiwsky. The cultural center is located on the campus of the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church at 60 No. Jefferson Road.

The center is home to several Ukrainians organizations. Just a few examples include the Ukrainian Heritage School which meets on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, for children K-12 where the children learn Ukrainian language, history, and culture. There is the Traditional Dance Ensemble and Dance Academy which

With Easter coming up, Zawadiwsky was asked to share some Ukrainian Easter traditions.

One is the making of pysanky eggs; the name comes from the Ukrainian word “pysanka” which performs internationally.

Also, there is a Music Institute which teaches piano and bandura, the latter being a Ukrainian national instrument.

“Our mission is to have [the center] be a place that houses and fosters vibrant cultural, educational and sports programs for all members of our community (Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian). We strive to make it a beacon for all Ukrainian Americans in Northern New Jersey and throughout the U.S.,” noted Zawadiwsky.

While many activities are in the Ukrainian language, there are others that are not. Among the latter are recreational offerings and the Carpe Diem Club. “The monthly program gathers members of the community together to enjoy good company, interesting speakers, and fun activities.” Zawadiwsky noted. The center also has fundraising events of interest to everyone, such as its very popular Beefsteak

Tricky Tray and Silent Auction.

In addition, the center is utilized by non-Ukrainian groups (such as sports clubs, non-profits, Academic Institutions, Hanover Township) and rents out space for events.

The center’s biggest event of the year is its annual festival which will be held on Saturday, September 26th this year. “A Ukrainian festival is like an Oktoberfest, except that the foods, song and dance, costumes for the shows, and even the beer is Ukrainian. There's something for everyone,” Zawadiwsky shared.

There are also Christmas and Easter bazaars which feature both Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian vendors.

“Those are the time to stock up on our special holiday foods [such as] kovbasa, varenyky (perogi), borscht, cabbage rolls, etc. Many of these are also available for purchase year-round from our kitchen on Saturdays and Sundays,” shared Za-

cess is continued with wax covering another area and then the egg put in another dye, etc.. When all the coloring is done, the egg is held up against a candle for the wax to melt and the pattern of the egg revealed. The center holds pysanka sessions for its school and youth organization.

Other traditions include having an Easter basket blessing and Hahilky. On the Saturday before Easter, Ukrainians take a basket with the items for the Easter meal, to church to be blessed. On Easter Sunday, after mass, the little kids go out and do a dance. It is not a traditional style of Ukrainian dance. It revolves around nature and spring. The dance originated in pagan time and was adapted to the Easter holiday.

Volunteer for Raritan Headwaters Association’s 30th annual Stream Cleanup on Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to noon, and see the difference thousands of helping hands can make! Helpers of all ages are needed, and the cleanup will be held rain or shine.

“It’s absolutely true that many hands make light work,” said Cindy Ehrenclou, executive director of the nonprofit watershed watchdog. “In just three hours last year, 1,700 volunteers removed 18 tons of trash and recyclables from 46 sites in Hunterdon, Somerset and Morris counties.

They made a big impact in a very short time.”

This year, the 30th anniversary of the RHA Stream Cleanup falls only a few days before the 50th anniversary of Earth Day – a day dedicated to supporting environmental protection and celebrating clean air, water and land.

“The Stream Cleanup is in keeping

with the spirit of Earth Day,” said Rebekah Buczynski, RHA’s Stream Cleanup coordinator. “Not only does it beautify local stream corridors, it also protects drinking water supplies and prevents litter from washing downstream to the Raritan Bay and Atlantic Ocean, where it can become a hazard to marine life.”

Spring into Action with Computer Classes at NCJW/Essex Center for Women in May

pring is in the air and what better way to welcome the season than with computer classes at the Linda & Rudy Slucker NCJW/Essex Center for Women. Basic EXCEL will begin on Monday May 4th and is scheduled to run for six sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, and Intro to WORD will begin on Tuesday May 5th and is scheduled to run for six sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. These classes are open to all women regardless of religious affiliation who want to improve their skills for job positions or who would just like to learn for their own personal use. There is an $85 fee per course. Classes are held at the NCJW/Essex Center for Women 70 South Orange Avenue, Suite 120,

Peter Charles Maynard, 65, Former United Airlines Pilot

eter Charles Maynard, 65, died in a glider crash in Front Royal Virginia on February 9.

He was born in Riverhead, LI, NY on December 13, 1954 and grew up in Lancaster, PA and Long Valley where he has many friends.

He graduated from East Stroudsburg University and the Police Academy, 500 West Hanover Avenue, Parsippany. Peter worked with the Chester Borough Police Department and was an officer with the Morris Township Police Department.

Peter retired from a 35 year career as a pilot with United Airlines in December, 2019. He retired from a full career in the Air-Force Reserves as a Colonel stationed at the Pentagon. Peter was the president of his glider club in Virginia and was on the Planning Board in Berryville.

He married Anne Downing on Sunday, November 8, 1981. Peter and Anne have two lovely girls, Kimberly Anne Maynard of San Francisco, CA and Casey Leigh Maynard, Indiana and soon to return to Berryville, Virginia.

Peter is also survived by his Mother, Maxine Derbyshire Maynard, 95, who lives in Edgewater, Florida with Peter’s brother,

Walter H. Maynard III and his wife, Lavon Maynard. Walter III has three boys, Walter IV, Warren and Wyatt. Peter’s father, Walter H. Maynard, Jr. predeceased him.

Peter is also predeceased by his brother, Glenn Dennis Maynard who died in 2018, survived by his dear wife, Elizabeth Maynard of Virginia. Peter’s brother, James Henry Maynard, Esq. and his wife, Holly Ann Maynard, live in Bedminster. Clark, live in Cedar Knolls with daughter, Dona Marie Marhoumy and grandson, Sharif M. Marhoumy. Granddaughter, Shareen Mona Marhoumy, lives in McLean, Virginia. Son Walter Charles Arthur Maynard, Michele Maynard and daughter, MariaMaxine Maynard live in CA. Peter’s sister, Gloria Elaine Maynard lives in Boonton.
