nited States Department of Health and Human Services Regional Executive Officer Dennis Gonzalez on Monday, October 21, visited the Morris County Sheriff’s Office Hope One mobile substance use resource and recovery unit while promoting National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 26.

Mr. Gonzalez, Public Affairs Specialist Sean Hightower, and Matt Birchenough, Director of Special Events for the Partnership For A Drug-Free New Jersey, met Sheriff James M. Gannon and his Hope One team that was on the Morristown Green as part of a twice-weekly schedule of bringing critical recovery services directly to people.

Mr. Gonzalez was in Morristown to promote National Take-Back Day when people can drop off expired and unused prescription medications at multiple locations, including at least 13 in Morris County. Mr. Gonzalez said medicine cabinets containing unused opioid prescription drugs can tempt people into experimenting or trying a few, which can easily lead to addiction and a quest on the street for cheaper drugs like heroin.

Mr. Gonzalez met the Hope One team – Morris County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Erica Valvano, CARES Certified Peer Recovery Specialist Kelly LaBar and Madine Despeine-Udoh, Director of Self-Help, Advocacy and Education for the Men-

tal Health Association of Essex and Morris – while Sheriff Gannon detailed Hope One’s impressive statistics since its launch on April 3, 2017.

“Hope One is an outstanding program, very innovative and creative. Congratulations to the Sheriff for having the vision to bring this to Morris County. It’s great the Sheriff is so proactive in a county where you wouldn’t think addiction would be happening,” said Mr. Gonzalez, who oversees HHS Region 2 that encompasses New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

“For the Executive Officer of the federal Department of Health and Human Services to visit Hope One and meet people struggling with substance use disorders, that shows true concern and a commitment to end the grip of addiction that opioids and heroin have on so many people,” Sheriff Gannon said.

Hope One has had contact with 9,389 individuals since its launch, and trained 2,057 people in how to administer Narcan to reverse an opioid-induced overdose. The staff have arranged for 152 people to receive recovery or rehab services and another 114 people have been connected to mental health services.

The Washington Association of New Jersey (WANJ) was founded to acquire and preserve Washington’s Headquarters at the Jacob Ford Mansion. It was chartered by the New Jersey legislature in 1874 and is the not-for-profit advisory and fundraising body for the Morristown National Historical Park (MNHP).. In 1933, the WANJ conveyed the Headquarters, Jockey Hollow and Fort Nonsense to the federal government, and Congress established the MNHP as the country’s first national historical park. The Jacob Ford Mansion was George Washington’s headquarters for the winter of 1779-1780 The museum where the Tea will take place was designed by John Russell Pope (architect of the National Gallery of Art and the Jefferson Memorial) and was erected in 1935 as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) structure.

The Jacob Ford Mansion is open during Holly Walk as one of the seven historical sites decorated in a historically-appropriate manner for Christmas.

Will Democrats in 2020 Again ‘Fall in Love’?

here are large historical differences between America’s two major political parties in how they choose their presidential nominees.

Consider this: Since 1952, there have been 11 presidential elections where there wasn’t a Republican president running for reelection. In 10 of those 11, the Republican candidate who led in the major polls in the year before the election went on to win the presidential nomination.

The lone exception -- ironically, given today’s headlines -- was former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani who inexplicably chose to skip the first 2008 tests in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina to stumble into Florida and withdraw from the race.

Another tradition of GOP voters (which they disregarded in 2016 when nominating now-President Donald Trump) has been to nominate the candidate whose “turn it was.” Republican voters resembled the pattern of the local Rotary Club, where last year’s recording secretary was promoted to this year’s club vice president on the way to becoming next year’s club president -- orderly and predictable.

Remember 1976: Former California Gov. Ronald Reagan challenged the sitting Republican president, Gerald R. Ford, and came within a whisker of winning the nomination. So whose turn was it in 1980? You guessed it: Reagan’s. And who finished second to Reagan in 1980?

George H.W. Bush, that’s who. And in 1988, it was Bush’s turn; he won the nomination over Sen. Bob Dole.

So the next time there was an open GOP nomination, in 1996, the choice was the 1988 runner-up: Dole. Sen. John McCain, who finished second to Gov. George W Bush in the 2000 primaries, succeeded him as the 2008 stan-

Mark Shields dard-bearer by defeating former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who -- you guessed it -- would become the Republican presidential nominee four years later.

Democrats have been far less predictable and, seemingly, more emotional in selecting their presidential standard-bearers. While Republican voters, until quite recently, have predictably “fallen in line” by promoting the most recent runner-up, Democrats instead seem to want to “fall in love.” Democrats have a marked preference for the “new face” over those who have run before.

Examples of this pattern include Barack Obama, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Michael Dukakis and George McGovern -- all of whom were nominated as first-time candidates.

In 2016, Democrats broke the pattern by choosing Hillary Clinton, who had lost the nomination to Obama in 2008, over Bernie Sanders, then a first-time aspirant.

ho is funding the militant illegal immigrant youth army of thousands of entitled “Dreamers” that marched to Washington, D.C., for the Supreme Court hearing this week on President Barack Obama’s unconstitutional amnesty program?

Follow the money; find the truth.

I’ve got the “Open Borders Inc.” breakdown for you of so-called DACA financiers and enablers on both sides of the political spectrum. Call them what they are: the “American Students Last” lobby.

Let’s start with Charles Koch. The libertarian billionaire has thrown his weight and fortune behind an amnesty brigade called the LIBRE Initiative.

While the establishment right purports to oppose identity politics, LIBRE wraps itself in the mantle of “empowering Hispanics” to “advance liberty” and “prosperity.” Koch has poured more than $10 million into the ethnocentric group since 2011 under the slogan “Limited Government. Unlimited Opportunity.”

Translation: driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants, in-state tuition discounts for illegal immigrant students and securing a Congressional deal to codify the Obama administration’s blanket deportation shields and work permits for 800,000 illegal immigrant students if the Supreme Court strikes the deal down.

Koch operatives send out weekly press releases urging Congress to “Protect Dreamers Now,” “Achieve a permanent solution for Dreamers” (hint: It’s not deportation), and “act promptly on relief for Dreamers.” Along with the Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity, LIBRE sponsored a “pop-up art exhibit” propagandizing the benefits of illegal immigrant Dreamers to coincide with their march on Washington on Tuesday.

Michelle Malkin Next up: the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The Big Business lobbyists for cheap labor have prioritized illegal immigrant amnesty legislation since 2014, when the Chamber dumped $50 million to protect border-jumpers from deportation and win them employment authorization documents. “Stripping DACA recipients of their ability to legally live and work in the country will harm them,” the D.C. fat cats lamented this week.

Then there’s Facebook. All week long, young users of the Silicon Valley giant’s Instagram app have been fed heart-tugging ads highlighting Dreamer families and their activist sisters and brothers, including the George Soros-funded street demonstrators of United We Dream, Make the Road New York and CASA de Maryland. Facebook’s lobbying arm, FWD.us, disseminated a letter from 10 of its illegal immigrant Dreamer employees “in solidarity with” all immigrants living and working here in violation of our laws. The NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice marched from New York City to D.C. with DACA recipients, according to the group’s press secretary Lee Morrow (who makes sure to let Catholic colleagues and journalists know that his pronouns are “he/him”). Leaders of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops convened masses at the border to condemn patriots who use the accurate term “invasion” to describe the violent siege in the Southwest.

Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles pledged that “we will never abandon you” and enlisted American churchgoers to pray for illegal immigrant families.

Such virtue-signaling gestures have never been extended to American families permanently separated from their children and grandchildren because of criminal-coddling sanctuary policies and porous fences, of course.

Microsoft and Princeton University jointly filed the Supreme Court briefs on behalf of Dreamers suing for the right to stay here illegally. Princeton also lobbied on Capitol Hill to extend the endless “temporary protected status” and work permits of 300,000 low-wage workers from Central America. Microsoft has punched American students twice in the gut, leading the charge not only for a massive pipeline of illegal immigrant youths but also for millions of H-1B and F-1 foreign student visa holders.

Even The New York Times now acknowledges the obvious reason Democrats are throwing American youth under the bus: mass uncontrolled immigration both legal and ille-

gal is turning America radically blue. But what about Beltway Republicans and establishment Swamp conservative think tanks and college groups? Where is the defense of American students fighting to make a decent living while competing with unrelenting floods of foreign workers at both ends of the wage scale?

Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk blithely advocates stapling green cards to foreign student diplomas and his speakers have shouted down America First students as racists and losers for challenging the donor class on demographic realities. (Who needs SPLC smear merchants with “friends” like these?) Shamefully, no right-leaning groups bothered to muster up their own army of American students to counter the Koch-Soros-Silicon Valley-Vatican-backed hordes on the Mexifornicated steps of the U.S. Supreme Court. The job of combating the American Students Last lobby has been left to anti-establishment outsiders -- Proud Boys, Groypers, displaced U.S. tech workers and other dissidents unmasking Open Borders Inc.’s controlled opposition.

On Tuesday, I was called a “Nazi” by a young GOP operative for supporting American students first.

Keep shooting the messengers, civilizational suicide squad clowns. If the goal is to make America disappear, you’re winning.

Newsweek Announces Top 5,000 Schools as Named by STEM.org

ewsweek announced its ranking of the top 5,000 STEM high schools for 2019, honoring excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Both Hanover Park High School and Whippany Park High School are included on this list.

With its long history of reporting on scientific breakthroughs, technological revolutions, and societal challenges, Newsweek partnered with STEM.org to rank America’s Best STEM High Schools. The list includes schools in every region of the country that offer skilled teachers who keep up with developments in these fields and who create dynamic learning environments to engage their students.

The top 5,000 schools were curated from STEM.org Educational ResearchTM (SER) using a proprietary scoring logic that took into consideration a broad set of quantitative and qualitative data inputs collected from Q2 2015–Q3 2019. The purpose was to determine which primary/secondary institutions in America best offer students experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)—as defined by the Congressional Research Service—

while preparing them for post-secondary outcomes. Additional factors, including affluence and median household income, were taken into consideration in compiling the rankings.

Remembering Romero

I

By Richard Mabey Jr. n this first chapter of this new column, "Journey to Truth," I've chosen to tell a simple, true story of a young man who passed by my Gate House, every weekday. Living in a gated community in Central Florida, for several years now, I have worked as a Gate Guard now for about six years. The story of Romero is very near and dear to my heart. It is a classic example of how simple acts of kindness can come back to you, tenfold.

It was in January of 2014, when I was working at the southernmost section of the gated community that I live in, in Central Florida, that I first met Romero. This was a section of the gated community that was under construction at the time. At that time, I began my work shift at six in the morning.

Each weekday morning, between 6:00 and 6:15, Romero would drive by my Gate House, in his dear old pickup truck.

Romero was all of 19. He once told me his age, in one of our many early morning conversations. Romero was originally from Mexico and he worked as a Laborer on the section where they were building new homes.

Romero had a Crucifix hanging from the rearview mirror of his windshield. He had a Holy Bible wedged between the windshield and his dashboard, on the driver's side of his faithful, old pickup truck. We would often talk about the impor-

tance of having faith in God. In time, Romero and I got to be friends. Romero would stop and talk to me for about five minutes every day. I remember how Romero's face would light up when he talked about his girlfriend, Maria. Well, one Friday morning, Romero stopped by my Gate House and announced that he was going to ask Maria to marry him, on Saturday night.

I asked Romero if he had talked to Maria's Dad yes. He told me that he had gotten permission from Maria's father, to ask Maria to marry him. Romero was so excited, as he talked to me about Maria. He was nervous and anxious as to how Maria would respond to his proposal. I told Romero that I would pray for him. He smiled, thanked me, waved goodbye and drove off to his work site.

The following Monday morning came. Romero drove up in his old pickup truck. He didn't have to say a word to me. I could tell by the expression on Romero's face, what had happened. With tears in

his eyes, Romero told me that Maria had turned him down. I told Romero that I was truly sorry. I simply told him not give up. That if he truly loved Maria, to not be discouraged.

Sadly, within a month or so, Romero and Maria broke up. I felt Romero's pain when he told me that early morning. I felt like I was looking at myself, when I was Romero's age. Here we were, from different cultures, we were of different generations, still I felt the pain that this fine young man was enduring.

I counseled Romero as well as I could, in his early three to five minute stops at my Gate House. I remember that I told Romero that there were plenty of fish in the sea. I told him that any young lady would consider herself honored to go out on a date with him. I knew that my words did little to comfort Romero. But still, I did my best to bring hope to the young man's heart.

The Friday before Father's Day arrived. Romero drove up to my Gate House in his old pickup truck. He handed me the very card that I've included in this column. Romero simply said to me, "Mr. Richard, this is for you. A gift for you."

The card was a Father's Day Prayer Card. It stated that I would be prayed for at the upcoming Father's Day Mass at Romero's church. I was deeply honored. I told Romero that the good Lord had not graced me to be a father. Romero's reply dear-

ly touched my heart.

Romero simply said, "Mr. Richard, you're like a father to me."

I nearly cried. I got choked up. I thanked Romero. He smiled. He drove off to his work site.

In the early Fall of that year, I got transferred to one of the Gate Houses in the northern section of my Gated Community. After I got transferred, I never saw Romero again. I never got his phone number or asked him for his email address. I had only gotten a few days notice of my transfer. It's just the way life is at times.

I think of Romero, from time to time. Somehow and some way, I made an impact on that fine young man's life. I know that Romero had a positive affect upon my life. I often wonder how he is doing.

IMPLANT DENTISTRY Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in. Since that loose upper denture was made, she had been unhappy with the situation. She inquired about the possibility of a fixed bridge supported by implants.

My Life Publications Editor Wins Media Award

By Steve Sears y Life Publications editor Megan Roche, who knows much about editing a writer’s work for publication, also is a fine writer in her own right.

In fact, her talent just garnered her an accolade. Roche was named an International Pain Foundation 2019 Hero of Hope Award winner for a January 2019 cover story she wrote about singer and dancer Paula Abdul and her struggles with chronic pain for iPain Living Magazine.

Roche, who won in the “Media-Journalist” category, and four other winners received their awards on November 15 at the Comic Pain Relief show in Los Angeles, CA. The award winners were recognized in the event program and received a trophy.

“It was such an honor just to be nominated with so many other talented media companies and journalists,” says Roche. “To be honest, when the competition for public votes first began, I wasn’t sure I could actually pull it off. I am also someone who is a fierce competitor, so I wasn’t going to let this award go without a fight. When I got the phone call that I had been successful, I really couldn’t believe it. It meant so much to me to have as much public support as I did. I had so many people reaching out to me to let me know that they voted, had friends constantly sharing my link to vote on social media, I consistently asked people for votes, but I could not have done it without the support of all of those who voted.

Whether you cast one vote or voted every single day from every single device you own, I am very humbled and very grateful for all your support.”

Roche learned via a received email a few months after article publication that she had been nominated. The months of July and August were open to public voting, the second year in which the public decided the winner. More than 33,500 public votes were cast, and Roche was her category’s winner with 28.1% of the vote.

Roche explains the background of the article which won her the honor. “I owe this all to someone who has been a part of my life for so many years. When I was 13, I fell in love with American Idol, just like pretty much every other teen at the time. I spent so much time reading up on contestants, learning songs that were sung each week, and I always imagined what it would be like to meet Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul.” Viewing the program led her to take a keen interest in Abdul’s career.

“Like any other 13-year-old, I learned as much as I could about her and knew that I wanted to be just like her. When I first met her in 2007, it was a very emotional mo-

ment, one that I will never forget.”

In 2018, when Roche learned that Abdul would be headlining at Morristown’s Mayo Center for the Arts, she - at that time a writer for the media outfit she now edits for - pitched the editorial team for the opportunity to interview Abdul. She scored the interview, but a few days after she had written and submitted the article, Abdul announced that due to production delays, she would not be able to open in Morristown as originally scheduled. Roche then searched for another viable angle and market for the piece. “Knowing that Paula suffers from chronic pain, I approached a charity that she has worked with for years to see if they would be interested in my article. The team at iPain Living Magazine gave me the okay and I reworked it and sent it in to hopefully be approved.” Although a familiar subject, Roche stressed over the process somewhat.

“As any reporter will tell you, the best thing you can do for any interview is be prepared.

When I got the approval to do an interview, it was very tough for me to come up with questions. I also knew that I wouldn’t have the opportunity to have any follow up questions. Throw in the fact that I had a time limit of 15 minutes, I knew this interview was going to be a tough one. While you are probably thinking that this would be the easiest thing in the world for me to write, it wasn’t. I sat up for nights on end agonizing on how I could do this justice. Finally, one day, it all came pouring out of me at 3:00 in the morning. That’s writing in a nutshell.

You let it sit and sit and one day it just all makes sense and you are typing away on your keyboard. You really have to trust the creative process.”

The article received lots of positive praise and, for Roche, was monumental.

“When I found out that it was the frontpage cover story for iPain Living Magazine for the January quarter, I was floored. Not only did I get to write a cover story on someone who I admire and am inspired by, I was able to also get my very first magazine cover story.”

The evening of the ceremony, Roche walked the orange (orange is the color for chronic pain awareness) carpet and did interviews with media that wanted to talk to her about her advocacy work for those who suffer from chronic pain and chronic illness – not an easy task for a reporter.

“I’m so used to being the one who asks the questions, and now the roles are reversed,” she says with a laugh. “I also had to make an acceptance speech in front of a pretty large crowd of people. Getting ready for the event was crazy. It’d been a process of finding a red-carpet style dress, preparing

an acceptance speech, and booking travel.

I think it completely hit me when I boarded the plane to Los Angeles that this was all really happening.”

Roche credits her support system for giving her the strength. “I feel like I need to use this opportunity to thank so many people. I seriously would not have had the opportunity to represent My Life Publications if it weren’t for the people who took time out of their busy schedules to make sure they voted each day. I was really surprised to see the amount of people who came out to support me. From former high school classmates to elected officials in towns I covered for newspapers when I was just starting out, I was stunned and appreciative to hear of all those who supported me. I also want to send a shout out to my friends, Ericca Farrington, Alison Wainwright, Stephanie

Kahler, and Jenn Merritt for taking time off from work and accompanying me to California to be my support system for when I accepted my award. It meant so much to me to have you girls there. I also need to thank my family for encouraging me every step of the way toward winning this award. They have truly been by my side and behind me, supporting every crazy idea that I’ve ever had. The list of thanks is so long, but each vote cast helped me get one step closer to achieving my dream of winning an award for the career path that I’ve chosen.”

Roche, who has a Master of Arts with a concentration in Digital Multimedia Journalism from Sacred Heart University, has saved a copy of every article she has ever written. “I enjoy being able to look back at the earlier articles in my career and remind continued on page 15

Editor Wins Media Award... continued from page 14 myself how far I’ve come,” she says. “I treasure some of those very first articles I’ve ever written, and I can’t wait to see what future articles are waiting for me down the road.” She then sits back in thought, then leans forward. “ My career is slowly but surely taking off. I really want to keep sharing people’s stories of success and overcoming adversity. I would also like to start my own podcast where I interview people who have been through some of the toughest times and highlight the fact that even though we can have lows, it really is all about the climb to the top. I would also like to eventually go back to school and earn a second master’s degree in investigative journalism.”

And yes, she indeed has a copy of the Abdul article – in a very special place. “When I brought her a copy of the

magazine so she could see it, she loved everything about it. For me, that approval meant everything.

The article that I spent countless nights struggling to write was worth it. She

even signed a copy for me and it’s proudly hanging in my bedroom. For me, this really proves that if you dream big, you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to.”

East Hanover Woman’s Passion for Cooking and Baking Takes Her Treats Nationally

The Italian mom prides herself on being able to make all types of food and desserts that please her friends and family. However, her baking and cooking abilities have recently taken her to a national level.

According to Scarano-Ilutzi, her earliest memories of being in the kitchen remind her of her mother. “My fondest memories are being in our little house in the Ironbound section of Newark, and watching my mom cook and helping her with the holiday baking. She was so good at it, and I was happy to learn from her.”

One of those recipes that still brings back those fond and warm memories is that of Anisette Knots. It is a big hit in the Scarano-Ilutzi house around the holiday season. “I am always amazed at how many family stories people start sharing when we eat them,” Scarano-Ilutzi shared.

Who would have thought that cooking as a way to relax would bring Scarano-Ilutzi on the journey she’s been on? Since 2010, Scarano-Ilutzi finds herself constant-

ly entering cooking and baking contests.

Her first cooking contest was a local one, a gelato shop opening on Route 10 in the Whippany/Morristown area was looking for a new flavor. “I created Donna’s Italian Delight, which was a coffee flavored brandy gelato. They conducted a taste testing for everyone who came to that celebratory event and I won.” Scarano-Ilutzi proudly shares.

Her accomplishments go far beyond the Whippany area however. After creating a recipe for the 47th Annual Pillsbury Bakeoff, Scarano-Ilutzi’s Cinnamon Crunch Cookies were chosen as a top 100 finalist out of 50,000 applicants. Pillsbury flew all 100 recipe creators to Nashville where all contest finalists baked their recipes, were treated to entertainment, and were even given professional headshots and a stateof-the-art GE Microwave.

“One of our colleagues accepted the $1 million dollar prize from Carla Hall (The Chew) on a live taping. In addition, our recipes were compiled and sold at supermarket checkouts as part of the Pillsbury Classic Cookbook series.”

Other contests that Scarano-Ilutzi has

placed in include the Minnesota Cultivated Wild Rice Council’s Go Wild with Wild Rice contest, Safeway Foods: The Fresh Grocer Fresh Ideas contest, Tyson’s Big Deli Recipe contest, Taste of Home Healthy Cooking Magazine’s One Dish Healthy Cooking recipe contest. Her eggplant parmesan also won her a wheel of cheese from the Parrano Cheese Company.

While her proudest competitive experience was the Pillsbury contest, she knows that her baking and cooking have brought a

lot more than competitive wins to her life.

Scarano-Ilutzi’s daughter, Liana, has been an inspiration for her baking and cooking.

“The proudest memories I have are forever associated with the difference I made in the life of my daughter and the young people with whom she associated starting at 6 years old. I baked cookies for most every class event and sporting team in which she ever participated.” Scarano-Ilutzi shared.

and she is a big fan of using what is already in her pantry. When asked about her tips for cooking and baking, she couldn’t just list one.

“People eat with their eyes so present your food in an appealing way. Use a pretty plate or decorate the dish with a bit of color. Keep it simple and don’t waste food.”

Scarano-Ilutzi will soon be busy baking for the holidays but that won’t stop her from entering contests for the months to come.

“I have been told that I have been a great cook forever. I enjoy being smart around creating amazing food and being innovative with what I already have in my pantry. I really like to see people just enjoy my food. One of my friends said that my hobby is feeding people. I have never thought of it like that.”

I Remember Dad, Chapter 2:

A Christmas Story

By Richard Mabey Jr. he Christmas of 1964 was a most memorable Christmas for me. It was the very year, that in September I had joined Boy Scout Troop 170. My Dad had joined the troop committee and we had both attended the big District Wide Boy Scout Camporee in October of 1964. I was beginning to see my Dad in a fullness of character, that I had never really noticed before. But it was the Christmas of 1964 that gave me a golden opportunity to see my Dad, as a man with a very vulnerable side. A man who had a sensitive, sentimental perspective on life.

It was in early December that my heart and mind filled itself with a vision, a dream, an energetic desire to build a little village beneath the family Christmas Tree.

I had told my Dad about my plans to build the little village and Dad kind of smiled and a hint of a sparkle came to his eyes. And, on the Saturday morning before Christmas that year, Dad and I walked down the basement steps. Dad told me that he had a box of old Plasticville houses and stores to give to me.

Many of you, no doubt, remember the little Plasticville homes and stores. Each one came in its own little box. You had to assemble them by yourself. You didn't need any glue at all, as they simply would snap together. They were brightly painted and for a boy of 11 years old, a great source of imagination and wonder.

In a corner of our old basement, stored upon a shelf, was a big box with big, thick, black writing on it, that simply read, "Plasticville." Dad had written that one single word with a big magic marker, many years ago.

I remember Dad carried the big box to his wooden workbench. A kind of sadness filled with my Dad's eyes and he opened the box and took out each Plasticville home and store. Most of them were no longer in the original boxes, but rather were now wrapped in old newspaper. Dad unwrapped the first Plasticville home that he took out of the box. I remember him looking at the newspaper page that had been used to wrap up the little plastic house.

"1949, Richie, 1949. That's the last time I ever looked at any of these little houses and stores. 1949," I remember my beloved father saying to me as he looked at the old yellowed, frayed newspaper page.

As I looked up at my father, I saw the quiet sadness in his eyes. The moment deeply touched my heart. I had always seen my Dad as a man who was bigger than life, a strong man, a man who could do almost anything. But now, in the basement of our old home, at the age of 11, I saw my father as a man whose little joys in life were put on the back burner for the sake of the somber reality of working hard to make a living.

On that Saturday morning, back in late December of 1964, my Dad's voice was filled with joy and splendor as he told me all about the train set up that he had at the end of the hallway in the home he grew up. And then, the happy song in my Dad's voice turned to a more solemn and earnest tone as he told me that it was back in 1949, that he took down his train set to put a little desk and filing cabinet at that little nook in the upstairs hallway. Dad made the sacrifice so that his sister could have a little office set up to do the bookkeeping for the trucking company that Dad and his brother, Edward, owned and operated.

That morning, on Dad's workbench, my father and I assemble a dozen or more of the old Plasticville homes and stores. It was such a fun-filled little time. Dad took great pride in telling me the story behind each little Plasticville building. Some of them, he had gotten as Christmas gifts.

Some, he had purchased himself. And, the one of the little stores had been given to him by one of his aunts.

After lunch, Dad helped me to paint the streets, the sidewalks and the lawns, of our village, on a big piece of plywood. We both had a blast that day. We created and built our own little town. It was just a lot of fun. Outside the snow covered the lower part of the basement windows. There was a certain comfort of the warmth of the old coal burner. That Saturday, my Dad and I became closer in spirit and in friendship.

My Dad was a kind man. At times he was very strict with me. Dad always wanted me to do my very best in school. He expected me to go to Sunday School, except if I was really sick. Dad did his very best to live up to the ideals of his faith and the tenets of the Boy Scout Oath and Law. I loved my Dad with all my heart. To this day, I remember with great fondness, the joy and splendor that my Dad and I shared when, together, we built our little Plasticville town.

Project Help Collecting Christmas Cards for Vets This Holiday Season

or most people the holidays are a time for family and friends but for our war heroes in VA hospitals it can be sad and lonely.

It’s heartbreaking to realize that many of these brave service men and women don’t have family in the area and some have no family at all.

Project Help is ever so aware of this heartbreaking situation. Periodically they visit the Lyons hospital and bring cards from youngsters and treats for the PTSD ward. “The patients love it…they are so happy to see us. We spend a couple of hours talking, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. It does my heart good to touch the hearts of many and bring a smile to their faces”, said Sandy Mitchell of Project Help.

As Christmas approaches, the need for personal contact is urgent. Project Help is doing a “Sign a Card” drive for veterans at Lyons hospital. For a donation of your choice, you get to choose a sentiment and have your name signed to the card. All of the cards will be personally delivered to the VA hospital in December, and given out to the men and women who won’t be home for Christmas.

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience.

Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event.

Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering.

“I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab.

Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.”

In 2017, she became the Alumni Team lead, and in 2018 joined the Board of Directors.
