New Jersey NASCAR Driver Keeps Dream Alive Through Realistic Expectations

When thinking of the state of New Jersey, regular enthusiasts of automobile racing may instantly think of the local short tracks. The paved facilities of Old Bridge Township and Wall Stadium, and the dirt facilities of Bridgeport and New Egypt. Other enthusiasts may think of the New Jersey Motorsports Park road course, or the recognizable sport heroes of Dallenbach, Evernham, and Truex.

Stephen Mallozzi’s journey has been emotionally based. A member of Generation Z, it was being able to name car brands, collect die-cast cars, and the art of video games that introduced him to the sport he loves so much. Becoming a competitor, Mallozi took up karting with hopes to one day enter the foray of stock car racing.

Sounds to be the perfect plot for a sports movie from Walt Disney Pictures. Yet Mallozzi’s focus on the

little things is what keeps him grounded. A focus on spending time with his inspired Mallozzi to put his racing dreams on hold. His father was battling Stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer, and Mallozzi was unsure how much time his father would have left. As a result, Mallozzi walked away from the sport he loved so

much. He switched his focus to commentary, eventually working for the ACC Network for a while, while also becoming a writer for tobychristie.com. Yet as his father overcame his illness, Mallozzi realized that his athletic mindset on automobile racing is what kept him going, and what he needed to continue to strive

for.

Mallozzi made his way to North Carolina. While focused on his dream and his fire reignited, he remembered to keep his expectations realistic. Was there a path to make that dream a reality? After making a few starts in late-model racing, Mallozzi was able to obtain cont. on page 2

a license to compete in NASCAR. Becoming a developmental driver for Reame Brothers Racing, Mallozzi was able to make his NASCAR-sanctioned debut in what is now known as the Craftsman Truck Series. That experience at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was what led to another opportunity this past April in the Long John Silver’s 200 at Martinsville Speedway. Driving back to Charlottesville after the 200’s rain-delayed conclusion, he was serving tables at the local Outback Steakhouse the following afternoon. He sold his truck just so he was able to make the trip to Madison, Illinois to compete at World Wide Technology Raceway this past month — utilizing the power of social media to continue to make his dream possible and attain financial backing.

Mallozzi is currently licensed to compete at NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series-sanctioned events at oval facilities 1.25 miles and under. Now having competed at World Wide Technology Raceway this past month, Mallozzi hopes to be approved to compete at sanctioned facilities 1.5 miles and greater. Mallozzi could attempt to qualify for upcoming events at Richmond Raceway, Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, and the Milwaukee Mile. While he would have the exposure, the length of those facilities would not help in Mallozzi’s desire for full approval to compete in the league.

“The Goal is…to find (the team and myself) at a Pocono or a Kansas, and then, hopefully, get approved to do Talladega and Daytona.”

Mallozzi continues to live out his dream. His way, with realistic expectations. As Mallozzi prepares for law school in the coming months, he knows that if he wants to convert this dream into a full-time gig, the time to go is now. For the sport of stock car racing, Charlotte, North Carolina is the central hub. With a focus on the primary and second-generation athletes in Busch, Hamlin, Elliott, and Dillon among others, the Cinderella stories of Bayne and Fedewa are often overlooked when focusing on the next generation of competitors. As the 29th season of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series continues across Fox Sports and the Motor Racing Network, Mallozzi hopes to be back competing in the NCTS this year -- hopefully, with backing from Outback Steakhouse.

“ Camelot” at the Vivian Beaumont Theater may attract a modern audience as it has been updated from past productions on Broadway. What was originally written by Alan Jay Lerner (he also did the lyrics as well) and music by Frederick Loewe is now modified by Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men). The problem with this

“Camelot” is not the acting nor the singing, it is with Sorkin trying to take a classic and making it modern. The stories premise is the same, a young boy, Arthur (Andrew Burnap) pulls the old king’s sword out of a rock, in doing so, he becomes king. As a young man he relies on Merlyn ( an excellent Dakin Matthews who doubles as Pelli -

Camelot

nore as well) to tell him what the future brings. At 104 years old, Merlyn dies leaving Arthur to fend for himself. England has just beaten France in a war and part of the settlement is that the French King must let Arthur marry his daughter, Guenevere (Phillipa Soo).

Under the direction of Bartlett Sher, the two nev-

er mesh. We never believe that these two are in love; neither do we feel any affection towards her lover, Lancelot du Lac. Equally confusing is Arthur’s first

love, Morgan Le Fey. In this rendition of the musical she is smarter than Arthur, more confident than he and like Guenevere, she is a free spirit

who doesn’t need anything from anyone. In the time of “Camelot”, woman were very dependent on men and in these traditional cont. on page 5

times were not independent whatsoever.

While I thought most of the songs were very good, much of the choreography was not. “The Lusty Month of May” was just awful and so was “Fie on Goodness”. Byron Easley never took the dancing deep enough to get excited about it. The very deft sets by Michael Yeargan and Projection by 59 Productions and swift costumes by Jennifer Moeller were wasted on the dancing, direction and the story.

The real problem with “Camelot” lies in the updating of the book. I was almost waiting for King Arthur to call his Round Table Knights “Dude” ; and the same with Lancelot, I was waiting for him to be called “Bro”.

Sorkin has the language in this classic of a musical all wrong, he has Arthur speaking and acting like a buffoon; he has Arthur’s wife calling the shots and has Lancelot as the Alpha Male.

Like so many classic Broadway shows of late, writers are taking legendary shows and making them “Woke”. It is almost an apology as to how people acted back when; it is almost as if they are denying history as well. My advise is that if you want to change the classics, write a new show instead.

Family vacations are a great way to bond and take a step back from the hectic schedules that accompany everyday life, but sometimes time or money (or both) make planning an elaborate trip a non-starter.

However, a staycation - a vacation you take right in your hometown (or nearby) - can be much less expensive and fit into nearly any amount of available time with the added bonus of skipping out on potentially stressful travel.

Dr. JoAnn Giesenhaus of Core Wellness Center in Little Falls, New Jersey recently presented a talk about Stress Overload Syndrome to the Passaic County Department of Health Services Health Educators. Only a few weeks later Core Wellness Center offered free computerized posture screenings at the Women’s Health Extravaganza sponsored by the Passaic County Department of Health Services. Dr. JoAnn is a member of The Wellness

Consider these staycation ideas to take advantage of your local area’s attractions and prove you don’t have to go far to spend quality time together.

Visit local landmarks. Just because it’s not a traditional vacation doesn’t mean you can’t pretend to be tourists. Start by visiting the places you recommend to friends and family from out of town or pick up a city guidebook to uncover hidden spots you may not even know exist. Make a plan to

seek out historic sites, visit local landmarks like museums or try an out-of-the-way restaurant (or two) you’ve never eaten at before.

Camp out in the backyard. Camping doesn’t have to be done far from home. In fact, it can be done right in your own backyard. Pitch a tent to sleep under the stars

and plan a night full of traditional camping activities like roasting s’mores, telling spooky stories by flashlight and trying to identify stars and constellations.

Set up a picnic in the park. Pack a basket with sandwiches, fruit and other treats and head to the park. You can enjoy a casual meal then take advantage of the open

space for a family walk or game of tag before retreating to the playground to let the little ones expel any leftover energy.

Have a home spa day. If you’re looking for some relaxation but don’t want to splurge on the full spa treatment, plan an at-home oasis instead. Light some candles, run a bubble bath and break out the facial masks and fingernail polish.

Visit an amusement park. No matter

where you live, there’s probably an amusement or water park within driving distance. A quick online search before you arrive can help prepare a strategy for hitting the most popular thrill rides and waterslides while skipping those that may not provide quite the same entertainment value.

How to Help Pets Maintain Healthy Weights

Like their human companions, pets can struggle with their weight. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), in 2014, an estimated 53 percent of dogs and 58 percent of cats in the United States were overweight or obese.

Being overweight or obese can shorten pets’ lives by increasing their risk for insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, cancer, and osteoarthritis. The APOP estimates that unhealthy weights can shave up to 2.5 years off of pets’ lives.

Sedentary lifestyles and overeating can contribute to weight gain in cats and dogs. In addition, choosing the wrong foods for an animal’s activity level may contribute to weight gain.

Is my pet too heavy?

Many pet owners miss signs that their pets are maintaining unhealthy weights. Pet owners may have a distorted perception of just what qualifies as a healthy weight, thinking a few extra pounds make for a robust pet. But those extra pounds could be causing substantial harm to cats and dogs.

The APOP lists healthy weight guidelines for cats and dogs. Cats are easily weighed by weighing yourself and then weighing yourself while holding the cat. Subtract your weight, and then you will know how much the cat weighs.

Dogs require larger scales, and this is something best handled at a veterinarian’s office.

Wellness visits provide more opportunities to get accurate assessments of pets’ weights. Vets can conduct visual assessments to determine if pets are maintaining healthy weights while also sharing information about the ideal weight for your particular animal.

Cats’ and dogs’ waists should be visible when viewed from above. If your pet seems thick in the middle, chances are he or she can stand to lose some weight.

Increasing activity

Exercise and healthy eating are the keys to getting cats

and dogs to shed some pounds (animals suffering from illness may need to pursue other avenues to weight loss). Ask the vet how much your pet needs to lose and the role that diet can play in helping your pet to lose weight. Reduce caloric intake accordingly until pets reach the weight their vet recommends. When pets are already overweight, adhering to guidelines on food packaging may make it difficult for pets to lose weight.

Exercise is another key to healthy weight loss. Dogs can go out for walks or engage in other aerobic activity, such as playing games of fetch. It can be more challenging to get cats to exercise. Toys that play into a feline’s predatory nature, such as things they have to hunt or chase, may inspire cats to move more.

Overweight pets need exercise and changes to their diets in order to lose weight and extend their life expectancies. Consult your veterinarian for advice on how to help pets shed pounds they can keep off for years to come.

Fishing is a treasured pastime for Americans from coast to coast, but the experience can be as individual as the person reeling them in. A successful angling excursion begins with thoughtful planning and all the right gear.

If you're new to the sport, gearing up for your

first fishing season may feel equally exciting and overwhelming. On the other hand, a seasoned pro can always benefit from periodically taking stock of tackle, gear and other equipment to increase the thrill of a great catch.

License and Registration

With just a few excep-

I Remember Dad: The Importance of North

My father had a most uncanny sense of north. It seemed to be engrained within his veins. He could be deep in the forest, hiking the Appalachian Trail, and he could easily point out north with amazing accuracy. I am convinced that it was a Divine

gift.

For my father, there was an unspoken importance of knowing where north lied at all times. Dad and I hiked dozens upon dozens of forest trails, historical hikes, and week-long vigils of traversing long and winding portions of the grand and glorious Appalachian Trail.

Through a time period of a little over 25 years, of all so many hikes with Boy Scout Troop 170, Dad carried with him a deep instinct of wherein north lied.

Over the years, Dad taught his scouts methods to find north, without a compass. One of my father’s favorite methods of finding

Shadow Stick Method.

only takes about five minutes to complete and it is totally fool proof. There are many articles about the Shadow Stick Method on

the Internet.

I never heard of anyone else talk about the Shadow Stick Method. Whenever we would take a lunch break, on wooded hikes with the scouts, Dad would

eat his sandwich rather quickly. Then have the boys gather round him in a circle, to teach them the Shadow Stick Method.

Boat

Unless you're planning to fish strictly from the shoreline or a bridge, you'll probably need a boat to reach the best fishing waters. Boat styles vary depending on the species you're angling for and the body of water you'll use to drop a line, and dozens of features and options let you customize your experience.

A leading boat maker like Alumacraft gives you ample selection with more than 80 models focused on fishing and hunting. The brand, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, puts careful attention into the performance of each vessel while continually introducing innovations like a rigging system, called Alumatrac, that allows a host of custom accessories to be attached to the inner side of a boat's gunwales. A lighter, stronger all-aluminum transom, made for today's larger, more powerful outboard motors, can help enhance your fishing experience.

Advance Intel

If you're traveling to a place where you don't know the locals, online research and area fishing reports can help you pinpoint the best places to find your favorite catch. For those new to the sport, or if you're branching out to target new species, be sure to do some research and learn from gaming experts about the best tricks for targeting the fish you prefer.

Tackle and Gear

Some elements of a fishing excursion are obvious, like rods and reels, but also be sure your gear includes a wellstocked first aid kit, sunscreen, sunglasses to reduce glare from the water, snacks and water to keep you safely hydrated. Bring plenty of extra line and tackle so you don't have to call a day short if you snag a favorite lure. Depending on the manufacturer, fishing-specific boats like the Alumacraft multi-species or crossover boats are designed with built-

Choose a Boat Style for Your Lifestyle

Not all boats are created equal, so knowing how and where you plan to use your boat will help you determine which boat style you need. Consider these options from the experts at Alumacraft:

Fish and Sport: These models provide maximum flexibility for families that love being on the water fishing or enjoying a day of relaxation, water sports and fun.

Multispecies: Whether you're looking to catch the next 50-pound muskie or just relax with friends catching panfish, adaptable multispecies boats are designed for all types of deep- or shallow-water anglers.

Bay: Versatile bay boats offer equally smooth rides and easy handling on your local river or on intercoastal waters. Bass and Crappie: Designed for shallow-water anglers, these boats feature plenty of storage, powerful engines and flat casting decks.

Hunt and Utility: Tough and easy to transport, these durable multi-purpose boats are built for those who are serious about the outdoors.

where north lies at all times, when hiking in the woods,” my father would tell his scouts. In the Holy Bible, in the Book of Deuteronomy, the second chapter and third verse, it is clearly stated, “you have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north.” In our modern day life, we no longer think much about the importance of knowing wherein lies the north. My grandmother once told me that when my dad was a boy of about 10 or 11 years old, he was given a compass by his Aunt Reedie. Grandma told me how much Dad cherished his compass. I think that God inspired Aunt Reedie to give Dad a compass, when he was a boy, to prepare him to become a good Scoutmaster in his adult life.

My father often told the scouts of Boy Scout Troop 170 of the importance of having a handle of where north lied, along a wooded trail. That was imperative for long-distance hiking, especially when walking the long, winding, rocky Appalachian Trail. It was during the Summer of 1971, I remember it all so well. I had just graduated from Boonton High School. Troop 170 had been hiking the Appalachian Trail for about three days or so. We still had a good three days of hiking left, to complete our week-long hike along the famous AT. It was night time. We were all sitting around a campfire we had built.

Dad pointed out the Big Dipper to the boys. They all looked up to the night sky. Then my father told the boys to concentrate on the side of the Big Dipper that did not have the panhandle on it. He told the boys to imagine a line being drawn from the star at the base of the side of the Big Dipper to the star at the top. Then Dad told the scouts to imagine that line continuing out to the sky and that line would lead their eyes to the North Star. My father taught me all so very much about the ways of the wild, to appreciate the midnight call of a hoot owl, to appreciate the stature and gait of the white-tailed deer, and to love and respect all of nature.

I dearly loved and respected my father. I miss him all so very much. It breaks my heart to hear a young person complain about their father, or to hear a father complain about one of his children. None of us can stop the ticking of the clock, the passing of the seasons, and the tearing off of a calendar’s pages. Love is the key to all human relations. Love knows no limitations. Love the dear ones in your life. And always forgive, forgive and forgive.

Fuel Up for Summer Fun

Dietitian-approved, family-friendly recipes

Summer sun brings an abundance of outdoor activities from jumping in the pool and playing in the yard to simply lounging in the shade. Making the most of those warm weather moments with loved ones means maximizing your time and fueling up for adventure with easy, kid-friendly recipes the whole family can enjoy.

From favorite snacks to homemade lunches, flavorful dishes that are quick to make using nutritious fruits and veggies can help keep your family ready for whatever summer brings. Dietitian-approved recipes like Peanut Butter and Jelly Sweetpotato Taquitos and Easy Homemade Salsa offer better-for-you summer solutions with healthy ingredients like sweetpotatoes, blueberries, raspberries, sweet onions, Roma tomatoes and more.

Ready in less than 30 minutes, these taquitos let you enjoy the convenient benefits of cooking with an air fryer, including:

• Healthier cooking: Requiring little to no oil, air frying is a healthier alternative to deep frying.

• Timesaving: Air fryers can cook foods faster than traditional methods and typically with less cleanup.

• Versatility: From vegetables and meats to desserts or reheating leftovers, air fryers can cook a variety of foods.

“Get into the kitchen together as a family and get cooking,” said Julie Lopez, registered dietitian and culinary nutrition chef. “Cooking together can help kids build self-confidence and lay down the foundation for healthy eating habits.”

While shopping for your family’s preferred ingredients, remember to look for the Produce for Kids and Healthy

Family Project logos next to favorite items in the produce department, as adding these flavorful fruits and veggies to your cart can help make a difference in your community. Visit HealthyFamilyProject.com to find more summer recipe inspiration.

Summer adventures can often take people just about anywhere, from down the street at the neighborhood pool to across the country on a family road trip. Wherever the action takes you this summer, remember to stay refreshed and energized with easy snacks that provide the nutrition you need.

For example, these Sweetpotato Summer Rolls offer a flavorful way to recharge after some time in the sun. Made with peanut butter, celery sticks and North Carolina Sweetpotatoes, they’re ideal for serving your family following a day of fun.

Classified as a “diabetes superfood” by the American Diabetes Association, sweetpotatoes are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxi-

dants, all of which are good for overall health. Plus, they offer a natural sweetener without the added sugar.

Consider these additional sweetpotato facts as you prepare for summer excitement.

Versatile

As one of the most versatile vegetables that’s easy to add to a variety of recipes for enhancing flavor and nutrition content, sweetpotatoes can be a key ingredient in both simple or elevated and sweet or savory dishes. They can be cooked and prepared on the stove, baked, microwaved, grilled or slow cooked.

One-Word Spelling “Sweetpotato” should be spelled as one word, even if you aren’t familiar with that spelling. In fact, the North Carolina Sweet-

potato Commission deliberately spells it as one word (a practice adopted by the National Sweetpotato Collaborators in 1989) as a way for shippers, distributors, warehouse workers and consumers to avoid confusion with the equally unique and distinctive white potato or yam.

Shelf Life and Storage

Not only are sweetpotatoes abundant and found in just about any grocery store or farmers market, but they also have a long shelf life - up to 4 weeks if stored properly in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat sources.

Ideal for Athletes

Due to their high carbohydrate content, sweetpotatoes are solutions for both before and after exercise sessions. With complex

carbohydrates that provide sustained energy and antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and aid in muscle repair, sweetpotatoes

can elevate both endurance and recovery.

Dial Up Flavor with Summer Favorites

Turn up the heat this summer and spice your way to delicious warm-weather recipes by using subtle ingredients that bring out bold flavors in your favorite foods. Adding a taste-enhancing option to your repertoireTajÌn Fruity Chamoy Sauce - can make your summer get-togethers the talk of the neighborhood.

Cool off while enjoying mildly spicy dishes. Made with 100% natural chiles, lime juice, sea salt and a hint of apricot, TajÌn Fruity Chamoy Sauce offers a unique sweet-andspicy flavor without too much heat. Perfect for drizzling over fresh fruits and veggies like mango, pineapple, watermelon and more, it's also commonly used to bring fruity, subtle spice to a wide variety of recipes including beverages and snacks, like smoothies, mangonadas, ice pops and cold drinks.

For example, in this Savory Mango Chamoy Daiquiri, the apricots create a fruity, tangy flavor that's a nice, refreshing twist on a traditional drink.

Bringing a touch of heat to summer cookouts can be a breeze with mild hot sauces added to dishes like these Spiced Pork Ribs, which can be created start-to-finish in the oven or taken outside to sear on the grill. Just a handful of ingredients are required to season the ribs to spicy perfection before wrapping them in foil and letting your oven do the work.

The key ingredient for the right touch of subtle heat without being overwhelming is TajÌn Mild Hot Sauce, a unique, flavorful addition to your cabinet that pairs well with savory snacks like tortilla chips, chicken wings, pizza and even micheladas. The lime is what makes it different from other hot sauces.

Made with 100% natural mild chiles, lime juice and sea salt without added sugars or coloring, it can be enjoyed by the whole family as a versatile way to enhance favorite foods with a mild but wild flavor.

Both recipes can be easily enhanced with a simple concept: just pair TajÌn Cl·sico seasoning with either or both of the sauces to create unique flavor combinations, a tasty "mix it" tactic to add to your warm-weather menu and make it uniquely yours.

NJ Starz: Dr. Bruce Murphy Hometown: Hackettstown

As he ends his tenure at Centenary University, outgoing President Dr. Bruce Murphy thinks only good things – especially about the future. He says, “I think I’ll be hoping that the things that we've done, the things that we put in place, and the programs that we've started, that they all come to fruition, and that they all help to make the institution greater than it is, and as great as it can be.”

Murphy’s tenure at Centenary saw positive growth and change, significant challenges, and deep grief as well. His last day was June 30, and Dale G. Caldwell, former executive director of the Rothman Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Fairleigh Dickinson University, became the first African American leader in Centenary's 156-year history on July 1.

Murphy was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the early 1950s to his parents, George and Ruth Murphy. The Murphys moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where his dad started working for the Air Force. Two years after that, the Murphys moved to California.

For Bruce Murphy and his brother, Dennis, scouting was a huge part of their lives. “We were both Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Explorer Scouts,” Murphy says. “We both earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and we are vigil honor members of the Order of the Arrow. We were very active in the leadership of the various organizations that we were part of. I spent five years working as a counselor on Catalina Island just off the coast of California, and this was a significant influence on my life. I got to teach classes, mostly on the waterfront—swimming, lifesaving, rowing, canoeing, sailing, etc. - but also some of the dryland stuff. That is where I learned to love teaching; to see a student transform in their skills, knowledge, and attitudes about a subject that I cared deeply about, and hoped that they would, too.”

Murphy recalls the dedication of his parents to ensuring that their sons had a positive influence in their lives. “Especially my dad,” Murphy says. “He never had the opportunity to go camping or hiking with his dad, but he threw himself into it, and through reading and research, was able to lead a group of young boys in a program that he had never experienced himself. I always remember on campouts the other dads, who were the outdoorsman's type and had knives and cowboy hats and things like that, were in sharp contrast to my dad, who wore the official scout uniform, including necktie, and carried a briefcase in the campsite.”

Another big influence on Murphy’s life was athletics, especially in high school. Having never played sports competitively prior to Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, California, Murphy attained some heights.

He says, “I made the league championships in track

(9th in shot put), varsity tennis (we only had one level), and football. On the freshman and JV football teams my first two years, I was a two-way starter (offensive guard and defensive end) and twice selected game captain. On the varsity, my final two years, I played a little less, but enjoyed it more because it was under the lights.”

Murphy went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley, master’s degrees from both the Teachers College at Columbia University and the University of Southern California, and a doctorate from Vanderbilt University in educational leadership. A United States Army veteran, Dr. Murphy retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel, and afterwards taught leadership courses at West Point, and was vice president for academic affairs at the United States Air Force’s Air University in Alabama. A former professor at both Vanderbilt University and Mercyhurst College, Murphy is the founding director of the latter’s Master of Science in organizational leadership program, and the founding dean of the School of Business and professor of management at Point Park University in Pittsburgh. Prior to Centenary, he was the fifth president of Nicholls State University in Louisiana and was also a professor of educational leadership there.

Dr. Murphy and his late wife, Jeanne Picariello Murphy, took over at Centenary University on January 1, 2020, and started running things just before the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It certainly wasn't on the game plan, and they didn't tell me about that when I interviewed,” Murphy said with a chuckle. “I can recall when it happened that you could tell that it was going to be something big, it was going to impact everybody's lives, and it was going to impact the way we operate. We had to make some decisions and some decisions were thrust upon us - and I am sure there was a little bit of luck in there. As I look back and reflect on it, we did some things early on that I think really helped us steer a straight course through it.”

Murphy is extremely proud of the academic advances made during his three and a half years at the school, including expansion of academic programs like financial planning, data analytics, computer science, and especially in the health and wellness sector. New programs in medical laboratory science, health science, public health, exercise science, and a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree are now offered, as is a master’s online program in Happiness Studies.

“That's a program that's the first in the world of a master's level program,” Murphy says of Happiness Studies. “It generally talks about the field of happiness for the individual at the organizational, and almost at the societal level as well.” 97 students in October 2022 were taking the program. “That's unheard of, quite frankly, in higher education, graduate, or new program startups - particularly one that nobody has ever done before. It is very grat-

ifying, and they are doing well. We have students from all over the world that are taking the program. It looks like it is really going to pay off for us, and so I am glad that we did that.”

As exciting as the past three and a half years have been for Murphy, there is deep sadness as well. Jeanne Picariello Murphy, First Lady of Centenary University, was tragically killed in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident in January. A celebration of her life here was held on campus on the 22nd of January, and she was honored in April with interment at Arlington National Cemetery.

A former member of the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, she was the first woman ever on the USA Modern Pentathlon team, was involved with an Olympic-themed speaker series on campus last year, and as a former Army nurse, she also played a role in the university’s new RN to BSN program, which is set to launch this fall.

The husband-and-wife duo were a wonderful team, especially at Centenary. Murphy says, “I found out a lot about her since her passing that I did not know about. I have been in contact with her high school classmates. They have inducted her into the Roosevelt High School Hall of Fame in St. Louis. That is going to happen in August. I am going out there for that. She was just an incredible personality. I know that she was such a force.”

“She is going to be with me forever, and she is going to be with so many other people forever.”

Murphy, 73, will now reside in Florida, and further feed cont. on page 30

a hobby he enjoys.

He says, “There is one thing that I was going to do way back in 2020 but COVID got in the way. I paid for it back then, but I have been postponing it. I am going to do it this summer, and that is going to a photo safari to South Africa. Jeanne was always encouraging me, but cautiously encouraging me because of her health background, saying, ‘You cannot go there now.’ ‘And so, I asked myself, ‘Should I continue to do that?’ Well, I think she is talking to me, and she is saying, ‘Go on that safari, because you have been waiting a long time.”

Dr. Bruce Murphy offers what he feels is the secret to life.

“It is something that Jeanne made part of her message. When a door opens, take advantage of it. There are opportunities that you never really think about, that you never know about. This is something that I always try to communicate to students, particularly students that are struggling while selecting a major. I always say that you should have a life plan and set that out, but along the way, there are going to be opportunities that present themselves. Do not be afraid to take those opportunities, to open that door and to go through it, because you never know what is going to happen.”

Between school, work and entertainment, there are times when screens can seem like a pervasive part of modern life. For all the positive aspects of technology, there can also be a desire for children to have stretches of unplugged learning and participate in educational activities that do not require a screen.

Why Unplugged Learning Matters

“Unplugged learning is important to balance the screen time children may experience with other forms of learning; to promote physical activities, social interaction and creativity; and develop the essential skills that bolster them throughout their exploration and growth as individuals,” said Rurik Nackerud from KinderCare’s education team.

Summer can be an ideal

3 Tips for Creating a Summer of Unplugged Fun

time to focus on unplugged learning as it often brings a break from the traditional academic year and activities.

“We want summer to be a time when children can put down technology and connect with one another face-to-face, build important creativity skills and learn how to be social with one another without the buffer of screens,” said Khy Sline from KinderCare’s education team. “They can play, run, be immature and laugh with their friends, giggle at the silly things and find joys in those in-person interactions with one another.”

Tips for Creating Unplugged Fun as a Family

1. Get Outdoors. Make time as a family to get outside and explore, even if it’s simply a walk around the block after dinner. Help children notice the little things like a bug

on the sidewalk or the way the sun filters through tree leaves to make patterns on the ground. Ask them about the things they see and give your children the space to ask questions and work together to find the answers. This helps teach children collaborative learning skills: asking questions, sharing ideas and working together to reach an answer.

2. Read Together. This could mean going to the library to check out new books or exploring your family’s bookshelves for old favorites. Snuggle up together for family story time. If children are old enough to read on their own, invite them to read to you or their younger siblings. Talk about the story or even act out favorite parts to help your children actively participate in story time, which may help them better understand the story’s concepts.

3. Encourage Cre-

ative Thinking. Help children expand their ability to think creatively by working together to make a craft or project. For example, the next time a delivery box arrives at your home, encourage your children to turn it into something new using craft supplies on hand. A

blanket could turn a box into a table for a pretend restaurant while some tape or glue could transform it into a rocket ship or train. When everyone’s done creating and playing, the box can be broken down for recycling. This activity can help children literally think

outside of the box and apply their own unique ideas and creativity to create something new. For more tips to encourage unplugged learning this summer, visit kindercare. com.

Something Old is New Again Tax Beneficial Savings Alternatives

With the recent interest rate increases made by the Federal Reserve, it is time once again to actively manage your savings to ensure you are getting the most for your money. Here are some tips to consider. Maximize the kiddie tax opportunity. Remember, the first $1,150 of your child’s unearned income such as interest and dividends is tax-free and the next $1,150 is taxed at your child’s tax rate. Leverage this information by using the Unified Gifts to Minors Act to manage a savings account in their name. Just understand that when your child reaches adulthood, the account transfers to them. Look into tax-advantaged bonds. Municipal bonds, most of which are exempt from federal income tax, are starting to make a comeback. In addition, bonds within your home state may

also be exempt from state taxes. So with higher interest rates, review the tax benefit of these bonds versus higher interest, taxable alternatives. But understand the underlying risks of individual bonds in case the municipality is unable to pay back the debt.

CDs are making a comeback. Banks are competing for your deposits once again. But what is new this time around are higher, often unpublished, penalties for early withdrawal. So before you leap at that great rate, understand the cost if you need the funds before maturity. Also understand the true after-tax interest rate.

U.S. Treasury Securities. U.S. Treasury investments are generally not subject to state or local tax. So as rates go up, and if banks look uncertain to you, you may wish to consider this tax-advantaged savings alternative. And investing in

Treasury alternatives is now easier than ever by visiting www.treasurydirect.gov. With savings alternatives at interest rates of 4% to 5%, savers now have many choices to manage their money. The key message: review your options, apply an after-tax calculation to understand your true return, and know your risks!

Move All Summer Long 5 activities to keep children active

(Family Features)

Everybody, no matter their age, can benefit from daily physical activity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), young children should be physically active throughout the day for growth and development. Despite the common misconception that children are in perpetual motion, the CDC reminds caregivers to encourage children to be active when they play.

“Physical activity is important because it is critical in assisting with gross motor development and helps support development in other areas,” said Khy Sline from KinderCare Learning Center’s education team. “Children thrive when we give them the tools to use their bodies and muscles in new ways and make mind-body connections.”

Consider these five activities to encourage children to get moving.

Blow bubbles. Appealing to children from infancy on up, seeing bubbles floating around can encourage babies to reach out and try to grab them, building arm strength and coordination. Toddlers and older children can run around the patio or lawn chasing bubbles and watching them pop.

Build a tunnel. Whether indoors or out, made from furniture covered with sheets or cardboard boxes, tunnels encourage children to move over, under, around and through, which helps them explore new ways of moving while also building coordination and balance.

Play hide and seek. As they dash around trying to find the perfect hiding spot, children build spatial awareness, their understanding of where their bodies are in relation to other people and objects.

Play red light, green light. This classic game helps children build coordination – connecting the verbal instruction with the physical movement – while also teaching them impulse control, an essential executive function skill. Be sure to get creative with instructions and add variations like tip-toeing, crawling, hopping and more. Walk the line. Draw a line on the ground using chalk outdoors or painter’s tape indoors and encourage your children to walk along the line. This activity helps children improve balance and coordination. Get creative and add in a challenge by drawing a wavy or zig-zag line. Once your children get the hang of following the line, ask them to think of other ways to travel along that space, such as hopping on one foot or skipping. For more ideas to encourage physical activity among children, visit kindercare.com.
