By Richard Mabey Jr. n the midst of the Summer of 2018, I began taking my mom to Bingo every Thursday afternoon. Mom lived with me, in our gated community in Central Florida. Playing Bingo was a fun time, for both, Mom and myself. We met some very interesting people. And, we both learned the agony of waiting for just one number to be called to complete the horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line to be able to joyfully call out “Bingo!”

I think it was in the beginning of 2018 that Mom and I began attending classes, at our gated community, for developing skill and style for writing children’s stories. I remember that Mom excelled in the class. She made a lot of friends and people enjoyed hearing her array of children’s stories.

It was in early 2018 that Mom needed to depend upon a wheelchair to get around. The arthritis in her hips had gotten so bad that she was hardly able to walk. Mom’s cardiologist would not authorize that she was stable enough for hip replacement surgery, because of the degree of her heart murmur due to Aortic Stenosis.

In the middle of November of 2019, Mom had heart surgery to replace her Aortic Valve. There were post-operative complications and Mom needed to stay in the hospital.

Thanksgiving Day came and Mom was still in the hospital.

On Thanksgiving Day, my sister Patti and I arrived at the hospital, bright and early to spend Thanksgiving Day with Mom. We made turkey sandwiches and packed them in a little insulated lunch box, complete with a plastic container of dry ice. We also packed two small bottles of iced tea to have with our special Thanksgiving meal with Mom that day.

An older woman came into Mom’s hospital room at about high noon. She carried with her a tray, with lunch on it. The kind woman smiled at Mom, put the tray down on Mom’s mobile, bedside table, said Happy Thanksgiving to Mom, then turned and returned to the hallway to the big lunch storage container on wheels.

And, behold, there it was the hospital cafeteria’s version of a Thanksgiving dinner. Oh, I do not want to be unkind

here. But, let’s just say, it was mediocre at best. The turkey was that pressed turkey that comes in a roll and someone simply sliced it up. Mom was given two slices of this turkey roll with a sparing amount of gravy. There was a little white, corrugated, paper cup filled about three-quarters of the way with cranberry sauce. Not the real cranberry sauce, but rather the cranberry sauce that has a slight resemblance to gelatin. Then, there was a bit of stuffing, some green beans and then some corn. Not the greatest Thanksgiving meal that my Mom ever had, but still it was better than nothing.

I cut the turkey slices for Mom. She protested with every slice of the knife. “I’m not an invalid,” Mom kept telling me.

I assured Mom that she wasn’t an invalid, that I wanted to slice her turkey for her.

Mom ate her turkey dinner, while my sister Patti and I ate our turkey sandwiches. It was a joyful moment in time. continued on page 6

Ideas for Thanking Your Family

t’s almost Thanksgiving. And although 2020 may have been a difficult year for you, as it has been for many people, you can probably still find things for which you can be thankful – such as your family. How can you show your appreciation for your loved ones?

Here are a few suggestions: Invest in your children’s future. If you have young children – or even grandchildren – one of the greatest gifts you can give them is the gift of education. You may want to consider contributing to a higher education funding vehicle.

Be generous. Do you have older children, just starting out in life? If so, they could well use a financial gift to help pay off student loans, buy a car or even make a down payment on a home. You can give up to $15,000 per year, per recipient, without incurring gift taxes. Of course, you don’t have to give cash – you might want to consider presenting your children with shares of stock in companies they like.

Review your insurance coverage. If you weren’t around, it would leave some gaping holes – financial and otherwise – in

the lives of your family members. That’s why it’s essential you maintain adequate life insurance. Your employer might offer a group plan, but it may not be sufficient to meet your needs. There’s no magic formula for determining the right amount of coverage, so you’ll have to consider a variety of factors: your age, spouse’s income, number of children and so on. Also, you may want to consider disability insurance – if you were unable to work for a while, it could cause a real problem for your family’s finances.

Preserve your financial independence.

When your children are young, you take care of them. But you certainly don’t want them to have to do the same for you – so it’s essential you maintain your financial independence throughout your life. You can do this in at least a couple of ways.

First, consider investing regularly in your 401(k), IRA and other retirement accounts.

The greater your resources during your retirement years, the less you may ever need to count on your family. And second, you may want to protect yourself from the devastating costs of long-term care,

such as an extended nursing home stay. A financial professional can suggest a strategy to help you cope with these expenses.

Create an estate plan. To leave a legacy to your family, you don’t have to be wealthy – but you do need a comprehensive estate plan. You’ll have to think through a lot of questions, such as: Have I named beneficiaries for all my assets?

How much do I want to leave to each person? Do I need to go beyond a simple will to establish an arrangement such as a living trust? For help in answering all these issues, you’ll want to work with an attorney.

By making these moves, you can show your loved ones, in a tangible way, how much you value them – and that can help you keep the spirit of Thanksgiving alive all year long.

Diabetes in New Jersey: A Statewide Concern

Written By Chris Bauer MD re you constantly thirsty, always tired, having frequent urination or blurry vision? You might have type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes affects 9.2% of all people in New Jersey with over 640,000 people living with diabetes statewide. Most new diagnosis of type 2 diabetes are asymptomatic and only 10% of new cases are type I diabetes infections. Diabetes represents one of the most significant health concerns that faces so many members of our community.

The majority of diabetes cases fall in either a type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes category. Diabetes type 1 is a condition that is more autoimmune based and is one in which your body does not make insulin.

Insulin breaks down sugar in your blood and regulates your blood glucose levels. Type 2 diabetes is when your body is making insulin but the tissue and organs in your body are less sensitive to insulin and as a result blood glucose levels are elevated. Often type 2 diabetes is associated with increased weight gain and obesity. Gestational diabetes is when pregnant women have an elevated blood sugar levels due to hormones that are made in the placenta.

The most common way that any of the diabetic conditions are diagnosed is through routine doctor visits. This is true because again most cases of diabetes are asymp-

tomatic. When people are symptomatic and having elevated glucose levels the diagnosis of diabetes can be easily made. Most often though the diagnosis of diabetes is made through standard screening tests. A fasting blood glucose test, a 2-hour plasma glucose test and an elevated Hemoglobin A1C level are all tests used to diagnose diabetes. Regularly scheduled annual exams at a family medicine or internal medicine doctor’s office can facilitate the testing for diabetes.

After a diagnosis of diabetes has been made, the patient and the doctor then need to create to plan of management. If the person has type 1 diabetes, then often the patient will be given insulin. Insulin can be injected around mealtimes or at planned intervals during the day to maintain a person’s normal blood glucose levels. People with Type 2 Diabetes often can make lifestyle changes such as weight loss, improved diet, and increased activity to improve their blood glucose levels. If these methods don’t work, then patients can either be put on a trial of injectable insulin or an oral medication to increase the body’s response to insulin. Pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes are initially tasked with diet control of blood glucose levels with improved diet and if this fails then medication is used.

Patients with diabetes are at risk for many conditions and need to incorporate addition-

al screenings into their daily routines to prevent further issues. Increased risk of heart disease, nerve injury, eye disease and kidney disease are the most common types disease sequelae that are associated with diabetes.

Eye injury is one of the most significant areas of injury in diabetic patients. People with diabetes are recommended to have regular eye exams to evaluate the possible formation of cataracts, glaucoma and vision impairment. Regular feet exams are also recommended due to the increased incidence of nerve injury with diabetes. Kidney func-

tion should also be evaluated and monitored closely in the patients with diabetes. This can be accomplished by bloodwork as well as urinary analysis.

Diabetes is a multifaceted disease with a tremendous impact on those who have it. Only through regular screenings and adequate patient education can the harmful effects of diabetes be minimized. he job hunt after college is exhilarating and emotional while at the same time stressful and exhausting. Adding a global pandemic into the mix threatens to upend the process for the nearly 4 million 2020 graduates.

I think there are three elements to having good relationships with loved ones. Those three things are: forgive, forgive again, and forgive yet again. If your Mom is still on this side of Heaven’s Gate, tell her how much you love her. I wish I could mine.

In the early years of our nation, states typically limited the right to vote to “freeholders” which were defined as persons who owned land (men) worth a certain amount of money. It was thought that people who did not own property would have no permanent stake in the community.

The campaign for woman suffrage was

long, difficult, dramatic, and at times heart breaking. Decades of effort to include African American and other minority women in the promise of voting rights remained the challenge.

Voting rights for women and racial minorities were unheard of. But the devil is in the details. Most African Americans were slaves, owned by their white masters, and could not vote. Several states, however, allowed free blacks to vote. Most women could not vote, but in a number of venues, qualified women

For Pequannock’s Kevin Flood, Farming Has Always Been in His Blood

F

By Steve Sears or 23- year-old Pequannock resident Kevin Flood, gone is the “paper blindness” world he experienced from November 2019 to April 2020.

He’s seeing again the green of the grass, the blue of the sky. “Working in the land, feeling the dirt again, it was nice to go back outside; I was happy with that,” he says with a smile.

“I mean, when I was in the office, I was staring at paper all day. I was at a white desk in a white room with white papers.”

Flood currently works as a farmer for Rich and Sue Sisti at Catalpa Ridge Farm, which is located at 1358 Route 23 in Wantage, New Jersey. He graduated from Ramapo College last May with a Law and Society degree, got his first biopharmaceuticals corporate job in November, and when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, he as the new hire in his company was the one whose job was the first eliminated.

“I was only in it – I guess you would call it the corporate life – for about four months or so. I’ve been working outside my whole life, and I went into an office environment, and it was like, ‘Oh wow, I get to sit at a desk for eight hours.’ I was taking a step forward taking a corporate position, and I had gotten adjusted to it.”

One door closed, but another opened. Perhaps, “reopened” is the better word.

“That (the layoff) was in April, and in May Rich asked if I’d like to help out with the sales and stuff. I said, ‘Okay.’ And I show up and he says, ‘Do you want the (full-time) job?’ and I said, ‘Yes, I’ll take it.’”

The Sistis have owned Catalpa Ridge Farm for 36 years, and Flood started visiting and being exposed to farm work when he was

5 in 2002. “My dad, his old company, used to do something called a Global Day of Service, and Rich’s farm was one of the places you could go to volunteer for a day.

My dad would come, he would bring me, my brother (Michael; both were Eagle Scouts), and my mom, and there would be a whole slew of other people. I think it was once or twice a year.”

During the fall, he and the entourage would arrive at 6 or 7:00 am, take garlic bulbs and clean them, take apart the individual cloves, and after cleaning them would place them into bins and plant them out in the field.

“That would be an all-day occasion; the whole field was pretty much all filled with garlic.” In the spring, the group would harvest whatever produce came in or aid in tomato plant planting. “After their Memorial Day sale, whatever plants that they (the farm) had left over would be planted.”

Flood segued those spring and fall treks to volunteering at the farm through high school, especially at their

Memorial Day and Columbus Day sales.

So, Flood is back at the farm, and Sisti, 69, is happy to have him permanently on board. “You have to have help,” he says.

“I do a lot of the picking, but he still does a lot,” says Flood of Sisti. “He’ll have me go out there and pick stuff, but he’s also out there with me. We have a lot of shishito peppers, and I’ll be out there picking those, but he’s also out there picking the eggplants, the okra, stuff like that. He’s out there with me.”

“It’s really more of a team effort.”

Although this is a transition period for Flood – he calls himself a “temporary COVID farmer” - he says he could see himself owning his own farm one day.

“Honestly, I could see myself doing that. I have the experience in the industry. I know what it takes to run a farm, because not only are you planting crops for sale, you also have to make sure the crops make it through the season.”

For the next 30 years women’s suffrage was not taken seriously by lawmakers.

Women organized, petitioned, and picketed to win the right to vote, but their struggle took decades to accomplish their purpose. Few early supporters lived to see final victory.

The Seneca Falls Convention, in 1848, was the first women’s rights convention in the United States. The meeting launched the women’s suffrage movement.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote the Declaration of Sentiments, at the convention and it led to many other women’s rights conventions.

By the mid-19th century, woman suffrage supporters lectured, wrote, marched, lobbied, and practiced civil disobedience to achieve what many Americans considered a sweeping change of the Constitution.

In 1872, the first Presidential election since the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment (1868), was a call to action for suffragists. Susan B. Anthony argued that the Fourteenth Amendment’s Privileges or Immunities Clause forbid any state from making or enforcing any law that abridged the privileges or immunities of its citizens.

Women had always been citizens; and the

privileges or immunities clause therefore conferred on women the right to vote, Anthony argued.

When Anthony tried to vote, to her surprise, she was permitted to do so. Her victory was, shallow. Two weeks after the election she was arrested for illegal voting. Despite her argument about the significance of the Fourteenth Amendment, she was convicted.

In 1878, the suffrage amendment was first introduced in Congress. It would be introduced to each congress for the next 41 sessions. Women worked tirelessly, but strategies for achieving their goal varied.

Some pursued a strategy of passing suffrage acts in each state.

Early in the 20th century, women were only able to vote in nine western states which adopted woman suffrage legislation by 1912. Others challenged male-only voting laws in the courts. Some suffragists used confrontational tactics such as picketing, silent vigils, and hunger strikes. Usually supporters met angry resistance. Opponents heckled, jailed, and sometimes physically abused them.

By 1916, almost all of the major suffrage organizations were united behind the goal of a constitutional amendment. When New York adopted woman suffrage in 1917, and President Wilson changed his position to

support an amendment in 1918, the political balance shifted.

On May 21, 1919, the House of Representatives passed the amendment, and two weeks later, the Senate followed.

Momentum rippled through the states.

In July 1920, all eyes were on the Tennessee capital, Nashville, as anti-and pro suffragist each lobbied for the vision of a socially evolving United States. One more state was needed to ratify the proposed amendment and that duty rested solely on the shoulders of Tennessee. It passed by one vote, cast by

StoryTime Productions Pivots to Bring Joy with Doorstep Magic

By Steve Sears toryTime Productions of Pequannock provides entertainment and characters for indoor parties such as birthdays or special events, those characters playing games, singing, interacting with the attendees.

“It’s a small team,” says Darlene Davis, head of marketing of the one-year-old company. “We all work together to make everything happen.”

Things screeched to a halt when the coronavirus arrived.

“When the pandemic happened in March,” says Davis, “we couldn’t do that anymore, so we really had to sit down and get creative – figure out what we were going to do next. Especially with what people were going through emotionally during this time also, we knew it was really important that we continue doing what we were doing in the safest possible way.” The company was forced to pivot. “That’s when we thought of Doorstep Magic, where it’s all socially distant, but yet the kids still get to see their favorite characters and they still get that whole experience.”

Easter was the first holiday where Doorstep Magic was offered, an Easter Bunny exiting a car while music played, the bunny dancing and having fun, and then hopping with a basket of goodies to the front door of the home. If there is more than one child, there is more than one basket distributed.

Per Davis, Doorstep Magic delivered a busy Easter weekend to the StoryTime Productions doorstep. “We had parents calling us and saying, ‘Wow! I had no idea that this was even out there; that we could do something like this during this time.’ Everything was closed, so this was a very good option for them. After that weekend, I had parents emailed and texting us, saying, ‘You made my kid smile. I’m so glad

we did this during this time.’”

For Halloween, StoryTime Productions provided certain characters. Batman, Spiderman, Belle from Beauty and the Beast, and customized requests were taken as well. Songs played when exiting the car were based on the various characters. And with Thanksgiving and Christmas approaching, StoryTime Productions is well prepared. While not sure if pilgrims or turkeys will be the request of kids for the late November holiday weekend, Santa and Mrs. Claus are at the ready for Christmas. “We’ll definitely offer it (Thanksgiving) and see if people are interested,” says Davis, “but after that though we’ll definitely be doing Santa and Mrs. Claus, and possibly also some elves.” Christmas baskets will be delivered, and socially distanced photo ops are a possibility.

For Davis, who as a child sang, danced, and wrote songs, StoryTime Productions is a harkening back to her childhood, so she recognizes first-hand the value of the company she works for. “I wanted to be part of something that would help other young kids, and I also feel that if they’re going through something, all that stuff helps. And that’s why these characters are just so important, to be a part of kids’ lives.”

Davis also mentions that the fun and need isn’t limited to children. “During Easter, one of our customers had contacted us regarding a nurse. She was an essential worker at the time, and she had two kids. So, we had Belle come and she greeted the kids, and they were really happy afterwards. That was really fun to give back to people who are out there (on the front lines) working.” Davis says if you know of an adult who needs some giving back in a special way, contact StoryTime Productions. “With all of our visits,

Butler High School Graduate Named to Lead US Army Corps of Engineers

By Steve Sears 6-year-old, 1982 Butler High School graduate, Lieutenant General Scott Spellmon, assumed command as the Chief of the Army Corps of Engineers on September 10, 2020.

The event was held at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, Virginia.

“My assignment as 55th Chief of Engineers and commander of USACE is an amazing opportunity to lead, grow and give back,” says the Lt. Gen. “I’ve worked with some great leaders over the years and I now have an opportunity to take those lessons I’ve learned to encourage strong leadership among both Soldiers and Civilians and set the course that will take Army Engineers and USACE into the future.”

Lt. Gen. Spellmon graduated from the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point in 1986. “West Point was actually the nation’s first engineering school and the founding superintendent, Jonathan Williams, also became the Chief Engineer of the Corps,” he says. His father and many of his uncles served in either World War II or the Korean War, and each returned home to New Jersey to build their careers and families. “While none of them served an entire career in the military, I learned from each of them the value and importance of service to our nation,” he says.

He fondly recalls his youth in Butler. “Overall, my early years prepared me well for a career in the military.

Bloomingdale was a great small town to grow up in. It’s a strong community, has a very good school system; and

I had excellent examples everywhere around me on the importance of hard work, perseverance and overcoming challenges. Sports, in particular, were (and remain) extremely competitive in north New Jersey and I was bless-

ed with great football, basketball and track & field coaches. I learned so much from all of them, but particularly the value of sportsmanship and winning. And, while it took a little while longer, I also learned from them the value of winning in the classroom and academics.”

Lt. Gen. Spellmon calls himself a “history buff ” who loves to read. “When I think I am having a challenging or difficult day, I often think back upon the books I have read about President (Abraham) Lincoln, or General (later President, Ulysses S.) Grant and the extreme challenges they each faced in holding our nation together in the late 1800s. I also spend a lot of time marveling about the incredible infrastructure our grandfathers and great-grandfathers built around this country – without the computer and automation tools we enjoy now. I have the privilege in my current role to see this infrastructure every day.”

Lt. Gen. Spellmon has a campaign with four goals. He lists them here: Support National Readiness. The Army is modernizing, and our Engineer Force needs to keep pace with new requirements and priorities. The most important thing we can do in the US Army Corps of Engineers to support the Army’s and nation’s readiness is deliver our program… in other words, finishing quality projects on time within budget.

Reduce heat to medium and add brandy to skillet. Allow to cook down about 1 minute while stirring to scrape off any browned bits from bottom of pan. Once brandy reduces by half, add cream, Dijon mustard and remaining butter; continue cooking until mixture begins to reduce and thicken, 5-7 minutes.

A Special Veteran’s Day Birthday for Pompton Plains Resident

F

By Steve Sears or Bud Hardaker, Veteran’s Day 2020 was a special one.

On that day, the World War II United States Navy veteran turned 98 years young.

“Right now, at 98, I feel like maybe 70 or less,” says Bud. “People look at me and say, ‘No, he just can’t be 98 years old.’” He even has his eyes on turning 99 in 2021.

“I’m going to invert that 99 and make it 66.” He’s excited to even talk about turning 100 in 2022. “I expect to make 100. I’ve had five doctors tell me I should make 100 or better.” Bud mentions that, on his father’s side, there were seven children, five boys and two girls. The youngest, a girl, reached 100 years of age. “And I look like her, too,” he says with a laugh. “So, I have something to look forward to.”

“He is my favorite person in the world,” says his granddaughter, Brittany. “He is from a family dedicated to our nation.

There are eight Hardakers who have served, and Bud is the last remaining brother of four Hardaker brothers who all served in different capacities during the Second World War.” For the majority of his career, Hardaker worked as a mechanical engineer and plant superintendent at various aeronautical machinery companies, overseeing the manufacturing of airplane parts for WWII including crank cases for airplane engines, aircraft radios, walkie talkies, and other crucial wartime machines.

He enlisted into the Navy in 1942. “Bud served in the Navy submarine service, stationed out of Brisbane, Australia,” says his granddaughter. “With his background in machinery, Bud was responsible for ensuring that the US Navy submarines operated properly, and that when subs would come in from battle, that they were properly restored or overhauled with all new parts.”

He has recollections of his time of service. “I worked in repair in Australia, but I was fortunate to see a Japanese two-man submarine – they were caught in nets out there. One of them committed suicide, and the other one was brought on the submarine base. Also, going back to the Germans, two of their submarine crew were brought in when I was going to school there in New London (Connecticut), and I had the chance to see abut 30 - 40 German submarine sailors marching up and well under guard at the submarine base.” Bud also mentions that he spent his boot camp time at Great Lakes, Illinois, where he was a bugler. “I blew revelry, meal calls, and taps,” he says. “And being a bugler, when finished I could walk to the front of the line

to get fed.”

Hardaker was discharged on December 7, 1945, exactly four years after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Initially from Holyoke, Massachusetts, his family moved to Kearny, New Jersey in 1933. Hardaker has lived in Pompton Plains since 1955. He and his late wife, Charlotte – whom he met in 1950 - raised four children in town (he has another daughter from a prior marriage who lives in Arkansas), and he is fondly known as a former crossing guard for fourteen years in town, the most at Pequannock Valley Elementary School.

“There are not many WWII veterans like him left,” says Brittany. “He still has all of his wits about him, and loves to stay active by keeping a garden in the backyard (he grows eggplants, green beans, peppers, tomatoes, zucchini), keeping his mind active by doing puzzles or educating himself by watching the History channel or things on TV about the war, or anything that he finds interesting.”

The perfect day for grandpa and granddaughter? “I would definitely say one of the perfect things I’ve learned from him is how to garden myself,” she says. “A perfect day for me would be to spend a day out in the backyard, digging up the garden, and learning his tricks of the trade, how he kept it going for so long, and learning how to pass that down to my kids.”

In 2019, Bud was honored at the annual Rock and Blues Fest for Vets event in Flemington. He was the honorary speaker for over 600 people, the attendees being mostly veterans and current military. After

speaking to those gathered about his experiences of being in a submarine, he was approached by many in admiration of his service.

“He is a proud Navy veteran and an even

prouder father, grandfather, and great grandfather,” says Brittany. “He wears his WWII Navy Veteran hat proudly every day.

I could also not be prouder to be his granddaughter.”

Roofs for Heroes

By Buzz Warren, Publicty/PR Tri-Boro First Aid Squad ri-Boro First Aid Squad profoundly thanks all those who participated in donating and installing a new roof on their Headquarters There’s a lovely story about how this came about smack dab in the middle of a Pandemic outbreak.

All Volunteer Tri-Boro First Aid Squad (TBFAS) serving Bloomingdale, Butler, and Kinnelon needed to replace an aging roof with numerous leaks. Long Time Member, Linda McKnight, was told of a charitable organization called Rebuilding Together North Jersey. Their mission was to provide low-income homeowners with critical repairs and modifications needed to live safely in the home. Upon contacting them she spoke with Gretchen Viggiano, Executive Director. Up to now, they had never worked with a non-profit organization such as TBFAS, she was intrigued and told Linda about GAF’s Program Roofs for Heroes.

While GAF, the leading roofing manufacturer in North America, had worked primarily replacing roofs for individuals, they enthusiastically embraced the idea of providing all roofing materials for Tri-Boro.

GAF brought Arco Roofing of West Caldwell to the project providing the critical components necessary to make the new roof. They supplied cranes, equipment, tools and personnel.

All the pieces came together and In a week the Squad had a new roof!

Upon completion Squad Members prepared a congratulatory lunch It’s nice to know during Pandemic Crisis and economic

downturn there are organizations and commercial companies who are stepping up and performing an important civic duty.

Improve partnering and strengthen partnerships. We live in an age of limited resources and we have a number of federal and non-federal partners who work with us on projects that support mutual goals, often times this is where funding requirements have increased and we are able to pool resources. In other cases, we work with partners like the Nature Conservancy in our Engineering with Nature (EWN) effort. The Nature Conservancy provides grass roots advocacy for our efforts to promote civil construction with water resources that also provide an environmental benefit. There are many opportunities with partnerships and we’re on the lookout for ways to get better at it.

Revolutionize the way we do things. This is an effort that started a few years ago and we’ve made a lot of improvements. We are a 245-year-old institution and most of our missions are tied to legislation, regulation, and internal processes, many of which were written ten or more years ago. Policies and processes need review every few years to ensure we’re being efficient. Fast food is a great example. McDonalds and Burger King didn’t deliver food ten years

ago. Today, I can use Grubhub or Uber Eats to order dinner and use that extra time to do something else. Leveraging technology is only part of it though. Organizationally, we need to reduce bureaucracy and empower leaders at the lowest level to get things done without waiting for someone else to make a decision. That may sound obvious but in a large organization, things can get complicated fast. So, we are working to correct course. This is paying huge dividends for us.

The Lt. Gen. has been happily married to his wife for over 34 years, and they have been blessed with three wonderful children. “My oldest son recently completed his doctorate in biochemistry and is now conducting research for the University of Virginia. Our second son is a chemical engineer now working in Austin, Texas. Our daughter (and our youngest) took a different path - she is an opera singer (Soprano II) who just completed her Masters’ degree in vocal performance and is now teaching music and performing.”

He then speaks to his new assignment.

By Steve Sears orris County author Steven Max Russo, now 61, started writing fiction seriously when he reached his mid-50s.

“In my case,” he explains, “I think that my life experience has helped me discover my inner writing “voice” and style. I’m not sure I would have had the patience, confidence, or determination to start and finish a novel in my earlier years.”

Russo, who runs a small, virtual agency in Morris County called Moonlight Advertising, has written and published two novels, Thieves and The Dead Don’t Sleep.

For Russo, writing novels is a totally different realm. “Advertising is business. I don’t look at writing novels as a business at all – at least not yet. Maybe at some point in my career I will.” There is good news regarding his second release. “A company out of LA called Scenario that has worked with many high-profile Academy Award winning directors and films recently optioned my second novel, The Dead Don’t Sleep, for film. Perhaps if that book actually gets made into a movie (and if the movie is commercially successful) then things will change. But until that time, I look at novel writing as something I do more for fun than anything else.”

Russo’s foray into fiction, which evolved out of what he calls “creative frustration,” started with a short story titled “Putting in the Work”. “While I enjoy what I do,” he says, “writing advertising is actually the art of solving business and marketing problems with words and pictures – selling a product or service, announcing business or corporate news, developing a market positioning, explaining product benefits, etc.” Writing the short story was his chance to write just for fun. “I was able to write whatever came into my head. I didn’t have to do it, but felt compelled to, like I had to get something out of my system.”

Feeling “Putting in the Work” had merit, Russo submitted his story to The Rag, a small literary journal which was looking for short story submissions. “Two weeks later I received word that they had accepted the story. Unbeknownst to me, they were putting together an issue dealing with death and the macabre and my story fit right in. I was elated! They liked my story and actually paid me for it.”

Being a paid, professional author thrilled him, but further fuel for his aspirations occurred during a walk and ensuing discussion on a Florida beach with his wife of 23 years, Susan. “We were walking along the

beach talking about our eventual retirement,” Russo recalls. “I said almost jokingly that I would never retire. I was now a professional author and could always say that I was hard at work on a novel. She looked at me in all seriousness and said, ‘Why wait until you retire?’ It was like a light bulb going off in my head. Why wait, indeed?! The very week we returned I began work on my first novel, titled Thieves. Three months later the first draft was finished.”

Russo, who does most of his novel writing at night and on weekends, doesn’t work from an outline, instead starting with a first sentence and taking the story from there.

“Sometimes it flows and sometimes it sputters,” he says. “I’ve spent time typing furiously thinking I’ve been at it for an hour or so and look up to find I’ve been writing for 5 or 6 hours straight. Other times, I sit and stare at my computer screen and have to walk away and do something else because I have no idea of where to go with the story next. It’s not always easy, but it is always fun.”

Russo’s advice to all writers starting out is to believe in yourself and your writing, and never give up. “This business is full of rejection,” he says. “Everybody tells you that they are an expert and know better than you do, and many, many doors will slam in your face. My advice is to be open-minded, listen to criticism, but also to never, ever give up.”

And while publication of his works is significant, perhaps his highest reward is seeing one of his books on a library shelf.

“The day the Morris County Library System accepted my first novel into their catalog has got to be one of the highlights of my writing career.”

He then adds, “Being offered that movie option wasn’t bad either!!”

A Fearless Young Voice: She The Change

I

By Jillian Risberg t’s easy to say it’s not my community, not my world, not my problem. Then there are those, like Etasha Donthi, who see the need and respond. The CEO and host of She The Change podcast harnesses that restless energy and unleashes it against injustice, inspiring the next generation of female change-makers to be part of the discussion.

“I believe everyone has the power to change the world,” Donthi says. “My goal is to foster conversations with my guests about today’s most pressing issues, such as inequity in the healthcare sector, mental health, and racism. I am also not afraid to address topics that receive less attention, including access for poor women and girls to basic necessities like menstrual products.”

Hearing stories and discussions about how fearless young women have stepped out of their comfort zone and used their voice to speak up instills an inspired feeling within the listeners, according to the podcast host.

“I am proud to say She The Change has been able to do that,” Donthi says. “It is the most rewarding feeling to receive messages from girls who are choosing to take risks and speak up, even though it may seem intimidating.”

Her podcast guests are powerful, young female leaders who are advocating, empowering and initiating change on a local and global scale. She The Change offers an opportunity for activists and change-makers to converse about issues where societal intervention is necessary.

“Each guest has a different cause of interest, and on the show we highlight that cause and explain its importance,” Donthi says. “Also, I hope to bring well-known female influencers. It would be a dream to have Alexandria Ocasio Cor-

tez, Karlie Kloss, Michelle Obama, Priyanka Chopra, Greta Thunberg and Nadia Murad join me on an episode because they inspired me to pursue my passion.”

The podcast host’s goal at She The Change is to bridge the gender gap of women in leadership positions by inspiring her listeners to pursue their dreams, start their own initiatives and nonprofits.

According to Donthi, she has already tackled climate change on an episode and her advocacy extends to global warming, pollution, gun violence and more.

“Although we are making progress, the gender gap between women and men in leadership roles is far too large to be ignored,” the podcast host says. “Many girls have amazing ideas that could change this world, but unfortunately, many will never carry through with those ideas because they have been fed the lie that their dreams are not realistic.”

Donthi started She The Change to change that narrative and encourage Gen Zers worldwide to stand up for the causes they believe in. The podcasting space was the perfect platform and the podcast host embodies ‘lead by example,’ working to reduce pollution and end worldwide poverty.

“There is currently a scarcity of Gen Zers hosting podcasts, so naturally, Gen Zers make up a very small slice of podcast listeners,” says Donthi. “After I began growing a potential audience through Instagram, I began releasing episodes of She The Change, and those Instagram users became She The Change podcast listeners!

SNAP (Special Needs Athletic Programs) of Morristown Celebrates Its 15th Year

By Steve Sears NAP (Special Needs Athletic Programs) of Morristown has been doing good for 15 years.

“We may be in Morristown, but we have never turned anyone down. We have participants and mentors that come from all over Morris County,” says Kimberlee Strasser, SNAP program coordinator. “Which kind of goes along with our theme that we are very inclusive, and accepting, and we would never turn anybody down.”

SNAP was created in 2006 by brothers Matt and Zach Certner when they were in high school.

It enables special needs kids to enjoy the camaraderie of sports. Matt was a sophomore in high school, was athletic, knew someone who had special needs, and realized that even though he himself personally had athletic programs to engage in, the other individual had no place to turn to after school. Rounding up some of his basketball buddies, they got together with the special needs person, who then got his own friends involved. “SNAP was basically born as a result of him wanting to make this equal,” says Strasser.

In the beginning, SNAP was a nightly occurrence. Many volunteers took part in yoga, arts & crafts, swimming, and more, and then Matt Photo courtesy of SNAP went off to college and his brother, Zach, took the reins, and he brought on an educational piece focusing on awareness of special needs.

When Zach when off to college, Matt and Zach’s mom, Sandy, asked Kimberlee is she’d like

to take over the program, which is now a once-aweek event. Strasser, who is fond of the awareness portion of the program especially because she is a mom to a 24-year-old son with severe autism, but also taught special education and first grade, hopped on board. “Getting out into the schools,” she says, “and teaching the kids what autism is, teaching the kids what different disabilities are.” The latter is started in third grade, where there are four different stations at which students are taught about the different disabilities. “They (the kids) get to feel what it’s like to be different.”

Strasser cites outstanding student mentors that take part in the program, one of which is junior Alex Grayzel of Morristown Beard High School. “I’ve been with the program for four years, and I’m now one of the head mentors of the program,” he says. “The reason why I love SNAP is because I get to play and bond with kids who have special needs who might not get that chance outside of SNAP. Seeing all the kids laughing and smiling while playing makes me really happy and that’s why I participate in the program. I dedicate my time to help set up and run the program and I can say that it’s well worth it. Not only has Mrs. Strasser taught me valuable lessons and skills during my time with the program, but SNAP as a whole has taught me so much. Giving back to the communicontinued on page 28

3 Essential Tips to Keep Families Healthy This Fall

or many families across America, fall is viewed as a time to reset and create new rituals, especially with key moments like back-to-school. We all know common routines have been disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which makes parenting more challenging than ever. This year, preventing illness at home is part of everyone’s focus. A simple runny nose could mean anything from the common cold or allergies to something more serious like the flu or COVID. “This fall, parents’ #1 priority should be keeping their family healthy,” says Dr. Wendy Wright, adult and family nurse practitioner, owner of two family-health clinics and spokesperson for Advil. “In addition to COVID-19 concerns, there’s the typical cold and flu season to consider, with these dual threats unlike anything we’ve ever faced before. By being proactive and knowing smart steps to treat illness, you’ll help support your family’s well-being.”

Wright recommends these three tips to help keep families healthy this fall: 1. Wash and disinfect daily Whenever you and your family re-enter the home, wash your hands right away with soap and water. Wash hands well for 20 seconds, or about the time it takes to

sing “Happy Birthday” twice. Washing your hands is one of the easiest, most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs.

If soap and water aren’t readily available, the CDC recommends an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. You should apply the hand sanitizer gel in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together and then rub the gel on your hands and fingers for 20 seconds until they’re dry.

You should also disinfect commonly touched items. For kids attending school, this means wiping down backpacks, lunch boxes inside and out and folders used to bring paperwork to and from school each day. If done according to directions on the disinfectant, this helps kill germs and can further lower the risk of spreading infection.

2. Monitor and treat a fever This cold and flu season, monitoring and treating fevers are more important than ever to reduce the spread of germs.

Readings at or over 100.4 F indicate a fever and may be a sign of underlying illness.

Keep family members at home if they have a fever and treat as necessary with Advil to reduce fever and relieve minor aches and pain associated with the common cold or

flu. There are different types of Advil that your entire family can use to ensure everybody in your home has options.

3. Set routines to prioritize health Routines bring structure to the day, something that will be key this fall when kids are back in school, be it in-person, at-home or a hybrid approach. Now that kids are waking up earlier, they also need to go to bed early, so it’s important to set a sleep routine for your family. Adequate sleep provides energy, helps students focus at school and supports a healthy immune system.

The CDC recommends these sleep guidelines depending on your child’s age: * Preschool 3-5 years old: 10-13 hours * School-age 6-12 years old: 9-12 hours * Teen 13-18 years old: 8-10 hours A well-balanced diet is also important for a healthy household. A History of Morristown Municipal Airport

By Henry M. Holden n the early 1930s, Morristown Airport was situated on a 280-acre tract of land occupied by the Normandy Water Works, on the Columbia Meadowlands.

Because the Great Depression little activity took place on the airfield. Then, in 1933, the federal government provided funds for airport improvements under the Works Project Administration.

The improvements were in preparation for an expected Zeppelin base, fueled by the commercial German dirigible traffic between Europe and America. On October 7, 1936, the German Zeppelin Hindenburg flew over the Columbia Meadows. Speculation had it that Morristown would be the future eastern American terminal for the transoceanic flights of the Graf Zeppelin Company. The crash of the Hindenburg ended all discussions of a Zeppelin base.

During World War II, Morristown Airport conducted an army primary flight training center. For more than two years, the airport had been conducting a Civilian Pilot Training Program, a program that anticipated the coming war and the need for pilots.

Near the end of World War II, the Army returned the airport, now worth $1.5M, to Morristown. In 1947, Morristown put

Morristown Municipal Airport (MMU) began welcoming aviation companies to Morris County. At the time, these firms made Morris County a leader in research and development of aviation technology.

With the settlement of thousands of employees, satellite industries and companies began settling in and around Morristown.

Morristown, the County Seat for Morris County, attracted a population growth for decades. Zoning suits were thought to be the most effective way of limiting the airport’s expansion and the noise.

In a 1956 suit against Morristown, by Hanover Township, the township argued that the airport “is a business pure and simple” and “entitled to no greater sanctity than a private corporation.”

Morristown responded, “the airport served an essential governmental function serving the public need and … is immune from the zoning power of Hanover Township.” A unanimous ruling by the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled in favor of the airport.

Hope and Joy donated $16,000 to Save the Children, an international humanitarian organization.

“My efforts were acknowledged by Disney Youth Service of America and I received the Disney Summer of Service Grant to make a larger impact in my community,” Donthi says. “It was incredibly rewarding to see the money I raised put a smile on hundreds of kids’ faces. Although ending poverty may seem like an undefeatable force too big for one person to make a difference, I am glad to be taking a step in the right direction and changing the world for the better.”

When it comes to who is listening — the She The Change audience is predominantly composed of women up to age 59, with Gen Z and Millennials the largest listenership.

“The audience has grown to thousands of listeners across many countries because of Instagram. Reaching more Gen Zers through the She The Change audience will only increase the number of people who are advocating and initiating change,” says Donthi. “That is all I could ask for.”

The podcast market is flooded, but what sets She The Change apart is it’s one of the only podcasts hosted by a teenager.

“And to my knowledge, the first podcast

produced with the aim of empowering Gen Z girls to advocate for change, take up leadership positions and empower others,” Donthi says.

The podcast host is filled with humility and gratitude as she reflects on how She The Change has really resonated with people.

“I could not have grown (it) to the scale it has without all the amazing supporters and listeners who share the episodes with their friends and family to extend the impact of She The Change,” says Donthi. “People around the world are taking a leap of faith; I couldn’t be more proud to see girls like me reaching out of their comfort zone and fighting for what they believe in.”

After every episode, the podcast host hopes listeners come away feeling motivated and inspired by the discussion.

“I love to see that inspired feeling translate into action, where the listener takes the knowledge she gained from the episode to initiate change within their community,” Donthi says.

“I love this program,” says Strasser. “I love what it’s doing for our community. Just to have the community rallying for SNAP and talking about it is all I could really ask for.”

wings separate in flight, over the runway, and in front of an estimated 15,000 spectators. The crash was later ruled pilot error because the pilot exceeded the 200-mph speed limit for the homebuilt aircraft. The accident, and other logistical issues permanently ended the possibility of future airshows.

With its continual growth and maintenance expenses, the people of Morristown wondered; would the airport continue to pay for itself, or would the taxpayers, foot the bill? By 1960, they earned a profit of $70,000. This trend did not continue. In 1982, Morristown leased the management of the airport to DM AIRPORTS, LTD. By 2002, there were several hundred aircraft based at MMU including jets, helicopters, and turboprops. Today it is the third busiest airport in New Jersey; surpassed only by Newark-Liberty International Airport, and Teterboro. Over the last three years, the number of airport movements has been increasing from 75,356 in 2017, to 82,900 in 2019.

As a General Aviation Reliever Airport, MMU accepts private, corporate, air taxi, air ambulance, training, and military aircraft. The majority of New Jersey’s business fleet is located at Teterboro and MMU. In 2000 there were 325 aircraft based at MMU and in 2019 there were 241.

In addition to being a major transportation asset, MMU is also a major economic asset to Morris County. It supplies an estimated $13 million in tax benefits to the community.

Today MMU covers 638-acres. Physical constraints of the wetlands and permanently preserved open space eliminates the potential for future runway expansion.

The 1970s brought the jet age and further development.

As the economy and airport grew, so too did noise and air traffic complaints. Neighboring towns continued their pressure to restrict airport growth. Each request for improvements was met with protests and threats of lawsuits. MMU would learn to ask for all it could get, and settle for what it

needed. Other efforts, such as the demand for commercial passenger service would remain an unobtainable dream.

The 1970s, also saw work underway to extend the major runway. Engineers dredged a swampy area, moving over 1.7-million tons of mud, and earth for the runway. They installed a new instrument landing system and other improvements related to safety.

Airshows continued sporadically until Sunday, June 12, 1983 when a single engine experimental aircraft had both
