Alex Roman Township of Mount Olive Councilman Alex Roman lost his Mom, 49-year-old Arcelia Castillo, on September 11, 2001. Instead of her normal 9:00 a.m., she had arrived early to work that morning at 7:45 a.m. to the World Trade Center North Tower.

American Airlines Flight 11 hit the tower at 8:48 a.m.

“I prefer to be left alone on 9/11,” says Roman. “Much like my mother, I’m not comfortable with being viewed as a victim. My kids also spend the day quietly reflecting. We have attended several 9/11 ceremonies in New York City in the past, but mostly we prefer to go to the 9/11 Memorial at different times of the year.”

Roman celebrates his Mom’s life just like anyone else that has lost a loved one. “I never assume my loss is greater than anyone else’s,” he says. “I keep a picture of her at my shop along with a framed United States flag that was presented to us by President (George W) Bush. I routinely talk about her to my wife and kids and how each of them

have some of her qualities. Her name regularly comes up at family gatherings.”

“As 9/11 approaches, I feel guilty being happy (my birthday is Sept. 8). It’s like a rollercoaster ride.”

Ray Perkins Former Township of Mount Olive Town Council President Ray Perkins was on the West Side Highway of Manhattan on the morning of September 11, 2001.

“I was in the city that day that the attack happened, and I was on my way into midtown, and a plane probably hit a few minutes after I passed by there. I’m on my way to attend a meeting up near Grand Central, and I get a call from one of my colleagues, and he says, ‘Hey, a plane just hit the (World) Trade Center – and it was a commercial plane!’ I said, “You’re kidding me!’

I get up to my appointment – and I’m passing ambulances and fire trucks like crazy, they’re sailing down towards this place – and I get to where I’ve got to go, and everybody is sitting there looking at the television. Out the window you could see the buildings. I then said, ‘I can’t believe this – oh my God!” Perkins headed to a pay phone (cell phone connections were knocked out that morning) line of about 200 people to wait and make a call, and then the second plane, United Airlines Flight 175, crashed into the South Tower.

continued from front page downtown, reached 23rd Street, then headed into a store to buy 12-packs of water, giving it to those who’d just experienced the most terrifying moments of their lives. “These people walking towards me look like someone had dumped flour on them, because now the buildings had collapsed.”

Perkins knew that Mount Olive needed to remember the lives that were lost that day, and he kicked a memorial idea in motion. “On (United Airlines) Flight 93 that went down (in Shanksville, Pennsylvania), was Hilda Marcin, a woman from town, was employed through the Board of Education as a teacher. I had met Hilda; what a pleasant lady. She was moving out to live with her other daughter in California.”

Mayor Rob Greenbaum got involved, donations gathered, and current Council President Joe Nicastro’s stepson, Michael Lalama, came up with the design rendition. Perkins then Ray Perkins at 911 Memorial dedication. forwarded the design to a Canadian company called Picture This in Granite, who took care of the final product. “We got an amazing amount of support,” says Perkins. “It was tremendous. It was heartwarming to see the community members and the township employees that dedicated their time and expertise to getting this done.”

Bruno Varano “Before it all happened, the day was incredibly beautiful.”

Bruno Varano officially became a United States citizen in 1961. The morning of 9/11, the Assistant Special Agent in Charge was at his office in Fairfield, New Jersey.

Varano, currently President of the Local 121 of the Federal Agent PBA, got a call that morning from one of his New York agents. “He said, ‘Listen, we got attacked.’ I said, ‘What

“I then got a call from D.C. and realized it did happen.”

“It was right after the second tower fell that I got in there (to the city),” he remembers. “I’m not sure if you’ve ever seen that Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, The Terminator, and one scene showed that in the future there was a huge war, and there are atomic bombs, it was like hell – everything was gray, everything was cloudy, there was smoke and everything was destroyed. That’s what it looked like. It was incredible.”

Varano checked into his office several blocks north of the area, and he and his team tried to see what they could do. “It was just a mess; so chaotic. Nobody knew what the hell was going on. Sirens – ambulances and fire trucks – were still going back and forth, and then at one point you couldn’t go anywhere. The soot, the dust, and the metal…you couldn’t move in cars, you had to go on foot. There were still fires going on there, the State police were there, they were bringing in the military. It took a day or so to get acclimated to what was going on.”

“But that first day – I don’t know how to explain it,” he states. “I guess try to walk into a volcano without getting cut, without getting burned, without getting killed. There was no ground to walk on. It was nothing but debris.”

Joel Katz Joel Katz, an investment banking firm employee of Sandler O’Neill and Partners, was on the 104th floor of the South Tower that fateful morning.

continued from page 2 down on the windows because of the glare, so we can’t really see outside, and we hear a big roar – and we had heard roars before that high up – but this really shook the whole floor,” he recalls.

“It kind of stopped the floor for a moment, but we went back to what we were doing.”

A man from the other side of the floor came running over to inform Katz and others that a commercial plane had just struck tower one. Katz started thinking. “It was a beautiful, crisp day. It didn’t add up that a pilot would do that. We had plenty of cloudy days when you wondered if that was going to happen, where we’re in the fog, but this was a beautiful day.”

The smell of jet fuel was very strong, and Katz felt that the situation was uncomfortable. He and 16 other people left the floor to start their descent and exit the building.

Once he exited the building and was about fifty yards, he heard another big roar. It

was another commercial jet, this time striking the very building he had minutes before departed.

“17 people who were at work at my company escaped, and 66 people died,” he says.

As Katz walked up the street, he thought about his coworkers. “I told them I was going downstairs, and they said, ‘Okay, see ya,’ and never gave it second thought. They had little babies at home, they had wives and families like I did – I had young children at the time – and they were in peril, so I thought of them. I thought of my family, obviously.”

Eventually Katz made it to a friend’s home in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where he met his family. “This became a congregation area for us, and we were getting calls from the wives of coworkers asking if we had seen their husbands. They (the calls) were very hard and I didn’t know.”

“We helped each other, spent the next two months going to funerals – sometimes three to four a day – and the company provided counseling services if we needed it.”

Katz, who now teaches Finance as an adjunct professor at County College of Morris, occasionally gives talks regarding 9/11. “The people who died were innocent people going to work like I, who had young families, who went to work and didn’t come home. I think that’s obviously a tragedy, and I think in honor of them and the lives they led, the love they had and it was an injustice to them, their families and their country -- I think it’s important to remember the lives they led, the spirit that they shared, and I don’t ever want to forget that I knew these people.”

“In my mind, they died as heroes.”

Tom Miller Tom Miller has been practicing fine art for years. He has a master’s in fine arts from the University of Idaho. He works in watercolor, colored pencil, ceramics, and more, and his topics are a variety. A Marine veteran, he was working at the time at Madison’s Fairleigh Dickinson University on an Operation Harvest Moon project, which is the operation he got injured in during his time in the Marines.

“Along comes the morning of 9/11, I’m at home waiting to go to a screenwriting course – it was a 9:30 class – I’m drinking a cup of coffee, and had the radio on, and heard of a plane crash (at the World Trade Center). So, I turn the television on to see what was up, and then I saw a second plane go in.”

Miller went to his class but first stopped at Columbia Turnpike and Park Avenue in Florham Park to view the on-goings. “I could see it, just a bit of the towers and the

smoke. “I tried to get into the city, asked the Morris County sheriffs to take me in, but they couldn’t.”

Learning that the towers had fell during the class, Miller started going to work on his 9/11 artwork. He has roughly 65 pieces, and he still creates them. His creations are given to first responders.

Miller, 78, lost a neighbor, Michael Sorresse, in the attacks. “He was a neighbor and a friend. I would say he was in his 30s, just had gotten married, worked for Marsh USA Agencies up on the 101st floor of tower one. I really liked him. He was a really nice kid. Then there was Giovanna Galletta “Gennie” Gambale (of Cantor Fitzgerald). I did a ceramic sculpture of her missing poster – I got her family’s okay.”

He then deeply reflects. “It (9/11) was as important as when my partner died in my arms (during an Operation Harvest Moon battle in 1965),” says Miller. “So many people, such a senseless thing, and because continued on page 5

Rita Weiner When 9/11 occurred, a big piece of Rita Weiner’s heart was ripped apart.

That morning, she was preparing to head into New York City with her daughter, Michele. “My husband called me and told me something had hit the World Trade Center.

Then, while watching television, I saw the second plane hit.”

“We didn’t go in; no one went in. 9/11 was horrendous.” She pauses, then continues. “I was angry. I’m a New Yorker at heart and have always lived in the tri-state area. This is my heart, just like if you’re from France, Paris is yours. I grew up in the area -- Rockefeller Center, skating over there, Times Square, the whole bit - and to see it demolished like this… it was very, very hard.”

The next day, Weiner saw a Salvation Army ad asking for help at Ground Zero. Her Dad was alive at the time, and he saw the same ad. “He said, ‘When I was in World War II, the Salvation Army brought me blankets, they brought me hope, and I never forgot it.’ And he suggested I join.”

She worked with the Salvation Army on Thursdays, noon – midnight. And when Weiner, who prepared meals as a volunteer, and her entourage first arrived at the sight, she was shocked. “It was an absolute disaster. It looked like a nuclear explosion. It was like nothing I’ve ever seen, and the smell…I’ll never forget it. It was like decay, decomp. It goes in your nostrils and you never forget it for the rest of your life. The ash would be up to your knee when you walked through it.” She then adds, “You would think from

such large office buildings, you would find desks and other things…nothing, it was like a giant crematorium. Another thing: we were not allowed to cry in front of the people. If you had to cry, you had to go in the back.”

However, it was a period Weiner would not regret. “It was cathartic and healing for me. It was healing for them and healing for me. Instead of feeling helpless and important, I was doing something. I was helping somebody hurting.”

After serving at Ground Zero and the “other” Ground Zero (a morgue) with the Salvation Army from September 2001 to May 30, 2002, she then became a tour guide for World Trade Center Tribute Tours from October 2005 until 2018. She eventually received an award from the center for doing 500 tours, and even got her first tattoo ever…on her back, which has the 9/11 symbol and reads, “Remember and pray”. “It was in my DNA,” she says.

The whole experience changed her. “There’s pre-9/11 Rita, and there’s post-9/11 Rita. Pre-9/11 was good; you never saw tragedy, you heard about Pearl Harbor, but you weren’t really a part of it. Post-9/11, I lived it personally; this was the first on my soil, in my town. I had hatred, and that bothered me, because I am a loving, giving person, and I don’t like having hatred in my heart. And I do believe when you have bitterness and hatred it kills you.” Serving with others fought the hatred. “I needed to express myself somehow to help others. The Salvation Army was the perfect way.’

Her advice? “Enjoy every day you have, because you see how quickly it can be taken away.”

Follow these practices to moderate the ebb and flow of cash in your business: • Analyze cash flow. If you don’t know it’s broken, you can’t fix it. The starting point for any meaningful action to control cash is discovering where the money’s coming from and where it’s going. Get a handle on cash by monitoring your bank accounts for at least one complete business cycle; then use that information to establish a realistic forecast. This should be done throughout the year to help you understand your seasonal cash needs.

• Monitor receivables. Extending credit to risky customers, failing to identify late payers, refus-ing to collect payment on a timely basis — these practices amplify cash flow problems. Miti-gate receivable fluctuations by generating aging reports. Use the report to follow up when payments are late. You may even wish to offer discounts to customers who pay early.

• Slow down payments. Prudent cash flow manage-

Morris County Historical Society Awarded Grants for Acorn Hall Carriage House Renovation

orris County Historical Society is pleased to announce the receipt of two 2019 Grants for Historic Preservation from the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders. The Freeholders approved the funding based upon the recommendation of the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund Review Board, which reviewed 29 applications.

MCHS was awarded $140,980 for construction of Phase I of the roof restoration and structural stabilization of the carriage house.

Funds will cover costs associated with replacement of the collar ties, restoration of the original roof and gutter system, restoration of exterior woodwork, including the cupola, and stabilization of the north and south walls.

MCHS was also awarded $10,175 for constructions

documents to guide Phase II of the restoration and interior rehabilitation of the carriage house, which will focus on preparing the carriage house to be opened to the public and interpreted as an example of an active and productive gentleman’s farm.

These funds are being combined with funds awarded by the New Jersey Historic Trust in 2017.

The combined cost of the Phase I construction project, over $315,000, represents roughly 66% of the total cost of the restoration of the structure. MCHS is extremely grateful to the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust and the New Jersey Historic Trust Fund for supporting the restoration efforts of this unique and historically significant structure.

Acorn Hall’s carriage house was constructed as

part of the Italianate country residence in 1853 and expanded in 1860. It represents a mid-19th century utilitarian carriage house used in the process of farming, orchard tending, and small animal husbandry on the once 9-acre property.

MCHS is located at Acorn Hall, 68 Morris Ave., Morristown, and is open Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays, 1-4 p.m. Admission, which includes the exhibits and landscaped grounds, is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for students, and is free for children under 12 and MCHS members. Changes To Expect As Cats Age

D

ogs are widely referred to as “man’s best friend,” and few dog owners can imagine life without their beloved pups. But Fido’s feline counterparts are incredibly popular as well.

According to estimates from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), somewhere between 74 million and 96 million cats are owned in the United States, putting cats on par with dogs (the ASPCA estimates Americans own between 70 million and 80 million dogs). Cats are also quite popular in Canada. The 2014 market research report titled “Canadian Pet Market Outlook,” which examined pet ownership and pet trends throughout Canada, reported that there are 7.9 million cats in The Great White North, which is also home to 5.9 million dogs.

Many prospective pet owners feel that

caring for cats must be easier than caring for dogs. Cats do not need daily walks to stay happy and healthy, and many cats do not crave attention as much as their canine counterparts. But caring for cats is not always so simple, especially as cats grow old-

er.

The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) said that some cats age faster than others. But older cats are often classified into three groups: ·Mature or middle-aged: 7 to 10 years

(44 to 56 years for humans) ·Senior: 11 to 14 years (60 to 72 years for humans) ·Geriatric: 15-plus years (76-plus years for humans) Though this might surprise some people, the AAFP said that many cats can live well into their geriatric years, some even reaching their early twenties. Owners of geriatric cats may need to be extra diligent when caring for their felines, as cats often experience significant changes in their health and behavior as they age. It’s important for cat owners to take their cats for routine veterinary checkups regardless of their cats’ age, but such appointments are especially necessary for aging cats. Because cats tend to require less attention than dogs, it can be harder for cat owners to notice changes in health or behavior in aging cats than they might notice with agcontinued on page 13

The AAFP recommends that healthy older cats be examined by their veterinarians every six months. While that may seem frequent, six months for older cats is roughly equivalent to two years for human beings, and that’s plenty of time for cats’ health to change dramatically.

She and her United States

Fencing teammates won a bronze medal at the July 2019 World Fencing Championships in Budapest, Hungary. However, award reception is nothing new for Dubrovich.

While attending Columbia University, she garnered First Team All-American honors

nder New Jersey law, a person is protected from harassment on the basis of their race, national origin, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation, familial status or sex. Moreover, each school district is required to adopt a policy prohibiting harassment, intimidation and bullying (“HIB”).

As a parent, knowing your legal rights and how to exercise them is important. Hiring a lawyer, however, can be expensive and is not an option for many people. She and the USA National Team, who in early August took part in the Pan American games in Peru, are coached by Bucky Leach. Dubrovich is coached locally in Garfield by Jed Dupree, who helms Team Durkan Fencing Academy.

Dubrovich is eyeing the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and the qualification process – a combination of national and international events -- has begun. Points are accumulated, and in April 2020, the top four fencers head to the Olympics. “It’s a long, grueling process, and for fencing there’s very little of an off-season, and it’s a long, long season,” says the Columbia University Psychology Major, who is always working on improving the mental aspect of her game, and has competed in world championships at junior and cadet levels. “For me, it’s always been about being able to prove to myself and to

others what I’m capable of in the sport, and just try my absolute hardest. So, Tokyo – its every athlete’s dream to compete at the Olympics.

There are just no words to describe what an honor that would be. But I think just being able to work my hardest and to do what I can to be the best fencer I can be is really my driving goal and my determination.”

Dubrovich, currently ranked 23rd in the world and in the top five in the United States, started foil fencing at age 8. “I was always very tall for my age,” she explains, “so I was put into dance and gymnastics, and that didn’t fare too well; I was just a little bit clumsy and uncoordinated. My cousin fenced in high school, and there’s a really big high school fencing scene in New Jersey – New Jersey has the most high schools with fencing programs – and they (my parents) were like, ‘Why don’t you try the sport?’ And I did, but at first,

I really didn’t enjoy it. When I was first starting out, fencing was relatively unheard of, it was pretty small. It wasn’t your typical marquee sport most kids my age were playing, so I just didn’t really like it. But then, I was pretty good at a young age, I started getting results locally, regionally, and then nationally, and so because of that I really started to enjoy it. Now, as an adult, I truly appreciate the sport for what it is, not just because of the accolades and the awards.”

Fencing is divided into three types: foil, epee, and sabre. Foil fencing, where you must hit your opponent in the torso or back, is the type of fencing Dubrovich has stuck with since childhood. Per Dubrovich, it hones hand - eye coordination, aids the subconscious and agility, and builds stamina for a very physically demanding sport.

In fact, even though foil fencing is a team sport, it’s you against your opponent. “You

“There is a time limit, so you have to be sure you’re focused the entire duration of this three minutes at a time, so it really hones both the mental and physical aspect of being an athlete.”

For Dubrovich, her parents, Valentina and Anthony,

are her heroes. She credits them with inspiring her and younger brother, Jason, a Division 1 soccer player. “Both of my parents actually immigrated from Belarus. They came to this country with very little and they have always just instilled in us the incredible work ethic to pursue our dreams. It takes a lot, and they sacrificed a lot

for me to be where I am today and where my brother is today. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my parents. I can’t imagine them leaving their home country to come here and start a completely new life with so very little. I’ve always been so in awe of their bravery and determination,” she declares as a tribute.

Friends of Kinnelon Library Celebrates 40 Years of Library Support

By: Danielle Incognito he Friends of Kinnelon Public Library recently celebrated their 40th Anniversary. Founded in 1979, it had been created as an all-volunteer, non-profit organization which helped focus attention on the library as a way to promote it, its resources, and its services to people of all ages in its community.

The mission of the organization is to foster education, culture, and information in the community. Its goal is to also raise money for the library, along with its many programs. On its website, it reinforces that support from the public makes a difference.

The Library’s Board of Trustees and the Borough of Kinnelon supplement the funding of the program.

The program boasts members who have always believed that the library was significant and had immense value for almost thirty years. They are extremely grateful for the financial support and volunteer services which enabled the program to be a success.

The group contributes about $70,000 in all its fundraising efforts.

One such effort is the yearly used book sale it hosts, and it sometimes takes nearly eight months to organize. Two years ago, it had raised $18,000, and the money helped to improve what the library had to offer.

One coordinator, David Wilding, called the profits “huge” in 2017. Profits have been boosted by the addition of vinyls, CDs, and DVDs over the past few years as well.

All this money raised could not be possible without the efforts of the dozens of volunteers who showed up to sort through thousands of books that were donated to the cause.

The Kinnelon Library group shared on its

site that, “It is not only used by Kinnelon residents, but also by hundreds of non-Kinnelon residents who take advantage of the benefits from the many programs provided through the Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL), as well as its cultural activities and many other services.”

Students have become an integral part of its services and focus. More than 400 non-Kinnelon students from over 30 surrounding areas have participated in their programs.

The program stated, “The strength of the Friends of Kinnelon Library is in our members, whose belief in the Library’s importance prompts them to support the library, both financially and as volunteers.”

On their website the Friends of Kinnelon Library also acknowledge, “It takes money to have a library. The financial support of the Friends and CLL is vital to ensure that the library continues to flourish and expand its resources and provide the facilities to meet the needs of the 3,900 households in Kinnelon, and to run programs like the CLL that are open to all.”

The group encourages new members and volunteers on their website. One way that the group encourages donations is by asking people to shop at Amazon. They can donate directly to the cause by going to Amazon Smile and select “The Friends of Kinnelon Library” as the organization they want AmazonSmile to donate 0.5% of the purchase to. Best of all, it doesn’t cost anything for the person donating.

The Friends of the Kinnelon Library are looking forward to another 40 years helping Kinnelon Public Library be the best it can be.

Meet St. David’s New Rector: Jon Richardson

By: Elise Phillips Margulis t. David’s Episcopal Church will be officially welcoming their new Rector, Reverend Jon M. Richardson in a Celebration of New Ministry on Thursday, September 12th at 7:00 p.m.

Richardson hails from Louisiana where he was raised in the United Methodist Church but was drawn to the Episcopalian denomination in graduate school. “[I was] the son of a United Methodist clergy-person.” However, he gravitated to the Episcopal Church while studying religions. He explained, “I chose the Episcopal Church while I was in graduate school at Drew University.”

Richardson has a rich history of volun-

teering for social justice ministry during his parish years. He served on the National Board of Directors for IntegrityUSA which is dedicated to LGBTQ justice and inclusion in the Episcopal Church and the world.

Richardson’s and the IntegrityUSA’s efforts led to marriage equality in the Episcopal Church. He also helped the church to establish a greater commitment to transgender non-discrimination.

Another important cause that Richardson is involved in is the Chicago Consultation.

The group helps build trust and understanding between the Episcopal Church and Anglican churches in Africa. His work with the continued on page 18

Before his arrival at St. David’s, Richardson worked at parishes in Morris and Hudson counties and had a short stint in Philadelphia. Then he served at a parish in Long Island for almost four years before returning to the Episcopal Diocese of Newark and joining St. David’s.

When Richardson isn’t working or volunteering he is involved in theatre as a member of the Board of Directors at Old Library Theatre in Fair Lawn. He is also a reviewer for the New Jersey Association of Community Theatre’s annual awards, the “Perry Awards.” He’s currently producing “The Full Monty” at Old Library Theater. Opening day is October 18.

Richardson’s husband, Michael Kidney, is a realtor who directs and choreographs community theater productions in his free time. Richardson usually works behind the scenes in Kidney’s plays. In addition to their love of theatre, a favorite pastime of theirs is playing with their three dogs.

RIchardson said that one of the things he loves about St. David’s Church is their wonderful outreach programs. He mentioned

some of his favorites. “Every other month they provide meals for a men’s shelter in Paterson. They collect food and money for six different food pantries in our area. They collect baby supplies to help support North Porch Women & Infants’ Centers, headquartered in Dover. They provide gifts for children of incarcerated parents every Christmas. The list just goes on and on.”

He also talked about the congregation’s fun fundraising functions. He mentioned their “Thrill of the Grill” five-course meal in the fall during which all courses are prepared on the grill (salad to dessert) and a different beer is paired with each course.

Winter brings another event during which wine is paired with a five-course meal.

St. David’s also hosts Beefsteak Dinners and Fish and Chip Suppers, performances, cookouts and a variety of activities and events.

Richardson says that they are not a huge congregation but they are always working on kind endeavors.

As for his role, he says he strives to serve the congregation by “help[ing] them to discern where we can find Christ in our midst and in the world, and to help lead them to answer the callings we find.”

Richardson is grateful that he “gets to ex-

ercise this calling of mine in a field that’s already so fertile and productive. I thank God every day that I have been given the chance to serve and lead this community.”

He extends an invitation to everyone in

Recycling: Tag-it and Leave-it Inspection Program Begins Late Summer When In Doubt, Throw It Out

ot everything with a recycling symbol goes into your curbside recycling bin for single stream collection.

Starting later this summer, Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority, which collects recycling in 14 of Morris County's 39 towns, will implement a “tag-it and leaveit” inspection program. When the inspection program begins, if your recycling contains contaminants, the entire bin could be left at the curb.

The goal is to ensure that bulk recycling loads sent by the MUA to the recycling market don't get rejected (and sent to a landfill) because they contain too many items that don't meet recycling standards.

While there are some minor differences in the recycling rules of the county MUA versus towns that don't use the MUA for recycling pickup, the messages in these

videos are pretty universal.

The most problematic recycling contaminants found by the Morris County MUA include: • Plastic bags (Take them to a retail store with a dedicated bin for bags. They jam machinery.)

• Plastic film/plastic packaging • Foam/Styrofoam (Large amounts of clean block Styrofoam that hasn't contacted food can be recycled at Foam Pack Industries in Springfield.)

• Hangers (Plastic, metal or wood -they jam up the machinery.)

• Food waste • Wood scraps • Plastic bottles/containers coded #3, #4, #6 & #7 (Recycle only plastic bottles/ containers coded #1, #2 & #5. No medicine bottles at all).

The MUA's revised plastics acceptability guidelines now limits plastic recycling collection to only bottles/containers coded #1, #2 & #5.

The goal is to avoid rejected loads at the local recycling facility, which first separates the single-stream recyclables into the individual materials that make up the recycling stream. Cleaner loads result in

less cost while rejected loads due to contamination result in a greater cost for all involved. The rule change is due to strict requirements for purity by companies who buy the bundled materials.

2 medium onions, thinly sliced (2-2 1/2 cups) 6 eggs 4 ounces cured, cooked ham or prosciutto, diced In large saute pan, heat 3/4 cup olive oil. Cook half potatoes until tender and golden, turning often.

Drain. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Repeat with remaining potatoes.

Add 4 tablespoons olive oil to pan. Cook onions until soft, about 15 minutes.

Add potatoes to onions.

In large bowl, beat eggs.

Add eggs to potato and onion mixture. Stir in diced ham or prosciutto. Reduce heat to low and cook 8-10 minutes until golden brown on bottom. Invert platter on pan and flip omelet onto plate. Add remaining olive oil to pan; slide omelet back into pan.

Cook until golden brown on bottom.

Get Creative with Apples this Fall

A

utumn is apple-picking season, and many farmers markers, grocery stores and even roadside apple stands are chock-full of delicious apples this time of year. That makes fall the perfect time to whip up some apple-inspired foods. This recipe for “Elsie’s Stewed Apples” from Laurey Masterton’s “The Fresh Honey Cookbook” (Storey) requires a tad more effort than traditional applesauce recipes, but the extra work is well worth it in the end.

When shopping for apples in advance of preparing this recipe, avoid apples that have a mealy texture as well as those that are overly sweet.

Elsie’s Stewed Apples Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1⁄2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1⁄2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.

2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1⁄2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

New Jersey Sharing Network Helps Others Through Organ Donation Facilitation

By: Danielle Incognito he NJ Sharing Network is a non-profit organization responsible for the recovery and placement of donated organs and tissues for the nearly 4,000 New Jersey residents waiting for a life-saving transplant. It is also a part of the national recovery system which currently serves 115,000 people on the national waiting list.

Gary Imhoff, Marketing and Communications Manager of the NJ Sharing Network (New Providence, NJ) shared, “In 2018, 678 life-saving transplants were made possible, 537 from deceased donors and an additional 141 from living donors. Every day, approximately three people are added to the New Jersey waiting list, and one person dies every three days while waiting for a transplant.

One organ donor can save eight lives, and one tissue donor can restore health to over 75 people.”

Kelly Bonventre, a hospital service manager at Saint Clare’s Hospital (Do-

ver and Denville), helps educate the staff on the process and activity regarding the network’s mission. She networks and makes relationships based on the importance of work The Sharing Network does.

She shared that she makes rounds in the emergency rooms and ICU to provide the information to the specific areas in the hospital that would most likely benefit from the information.

She also ensures that the staff is medically trained in case by case need.

One Flanders, New Jersey man’s life mission was to help others and save lives. Even in his passing at St. Clare’s Hospital (Denville) on June 15, he fulfilled his mission as an organ donor for the NJ Sharing Network. He was 52 years old.

During his life, he accomplished great things and gave his life to helping others. He was a life-long member of the Flanders Fire Dept., serving as both past Chief & past President.

Fred also served Mt. Olive Twp. as Fire Marshal,

Construction Official, Captain of EMS, and OEM Coordinator. He was an avid Yankees fan, enjoyed smoking cigars, playing with his pup, and spending quality time with his three daughters Kelsey, Morgan, and Riley as documented in his obituary.

The family showed his same compassion as they asked for donations to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers after his death.

On its website, NJ Sharing Network encourages all communities to learn more about the life-saving benefits of organ and tissue donation. They post that increased awareness can be very helpful when talking with family members, friends and co-workers about the benefits of organ donation.

Mr. Imhoff of the NJ Sharing Network shared that New Jersey residents can help save lives by registering as organ and tissue donors at www.NJSharingNetwork.org, having a conversation with family and friends, and joining NJ Shar-

ing Network at its upcoming events.

He also shared that in 2020, the Transplant Games of America are coming to NJ with 12,000 -15,000 people expected to attend this bi-

Hershfield Park Celebrates 80 Years of Fun

By: Danielle Incognito ershfield Park in Pompton Lakes recently celebrated 80 years of existence. It was originally dedicated in honor of Henry Grah Hershfield on September 4, 1939.

He was the man who had since been referred to as

the “Prophet of Pompton Lakes.” Now, it serves as a place of beauty, fun, rest, and even athletic events.

Henry Grah Hershfield, originally from St. Louis Missouri, was a major influence in the early development of Pompton Lakes.

Born in 1876, he attended

Columbia University in NY and served in the Spanish American War. He eventually found his way to Pompton Lakes, NJ. He made a lasting impact on the community after his arrival there.

Mr. Hershfield also held political influence in the area in which he settled.

He served four consecutive terms as Mayor of Pompton Lakes starting in 1909 after being nominated by the Democrat and Republican parties. Later, in 1917, he was elected and served eight consecutive terms in the New Jersey Assembly.

Mr. Hershfield helped Pompton Lakes obtain its first municipally owned water and electric light plants.

He also helped to organize the First National Bank of Pompton Lakes, where he served as a board member.

Moreover, he served as a member of the Pompton Lakes Building and Loan Association as well. In both positions, he was instrumental in serving the community and bringing about change.

Mr. Hershfield passed away from a heart attack on May 14, 1937. His passing affected the entire community, and even schools and businesses closed so that

people could pay their respects. Citizens there were compelled to pay their respects and show gratitude to the late man who served their community well.

Mr. Hershfield would be proud to know that people of all ages continue to take a break from their busy schedules to visit the park.

It remains a small neighborhood park in the county where people can be seen taking walks all hours of the day. There, they enjoy green lawns of the park and a small lake surrounded by playful geese.

There is also a separate, safely constructed play area for children along with wellequipped athletic fields where many sports events are hosted throughout the year. Currently, the town’s football teams also play at the park. The town brought up possibly making a turf field inside the park, but it is currently a high risk flood zone. The town has already poured a lot of money into repairs there, and sometimes the games had to be relocated. The field helps support 21 teams combined in the spring and fall.

Mr. Hershfield would be most proud of the travel comments listed on the park’s page. Many commented that it was a nice place to walk, play basketball, and relax during a picnic. Others commented on the park’s atmosphere, saying that it was a really beautiful place where they got to enjoy the wildlife, especially deer roaming around.

While adults commented on the relaxing and fun, they also highlighted the fun young children could have there.

Turning Horror into Hope: Jersey Cares September 11th Day Of Service and Remembrance Across New Jersey

By Dawn M Chiossi n September 7th, Jersey Cares sponsored their annual September 11th Day of Service and Remembrance Across New Jersey event.

Their mission was to transform the horror of September 11, 2001--easily considered the darkest day in our most modern history--into something that generously benefited others and honored the fallen.

Everyone was affected in one form or another by the terror attacks of what is most commonly known as 9-11. People felt overwhelming shock and horror at the loss of life, injury and devastation. Despite it, Americans dug inside themselves and rose up-- united.

They demonstrated integrity, strength, kindness and pure altruism, From First Responders to strangers helping strangers, people in droves helped without selfishness, without hesitation. On that day, Americans showed each other the qualities that all heroes were made of. They demonstrated exactly what it meant to be America’s best.

Jersey Cares September 11th Day Of Service and Remembrance Across New Jersey event stemmed out of the national movement founded in 2018. It annually celebrates the hope and unified humanity--not the horror-- of September 11, 2001.

Always ready to help and make a difference, Jersey Cares immediately thought of strengthening the communities deeply affected by the terror attacks in Hudson County.

“The September 11 Day Of Service and Remembrance is a day of unity, empathy, and service,” Jersey Cares Service Events Manager, Meagan Mulligan explained. “It’s an enduring and positive tribute to those lost and injured. It is not about hatred or negativity but remembering.

The event is very special, turning something somber into a day of celebration... keeping the spirit of unity and charitable service alive.”

This year Jersey Cares revitalized Jersey City’s Public School #12 Julia A. Barnes Elementary School in Jersey

City, and Liberty State Park.

Warm and enthusiastic, Mulligan shared Jersey Cares is so passionate about this event, that they begin thinking about projects they would like to do way ahead of time, beginning in February. They reach out to the various organizations in May. The PS 12 Julia A. Barnes Elementary School in Jersey City is dedicated to making their students responsible, fulfilled, and successful global citizens. Revitalizing the school was an easy choice to make for Jersey Cares.

Mulligan affirms that the organization often includes schools in their Day of Service and Remembrance event since they want to nurture them and give something positive to the next generation.

Volunteers of all ages gave their artistry a whirl by painting inspirational murals on the bathroom doors, brightening up the front of the school, and creating kits.

They can include messages of gratitude, cards, gifts, and candy. Volunteers just love them. In addition to the joy they bring to the first responders themselves, the kits are something that families can do together.

Even little children can make and decorate a card. Remembering the actions of these brave men and women is so important. Saying thank you to them is so important.”

First Responders are often familiar faces at the September 11th Day of Service and Remembrance Across New Jersey event.

“It’s very heartwarming to see them. Volunteers are so honored to have them with us.”

Mulligan enthused.

For those who enjoyed the outdoors and had green thumbs, the Liberty State Park project was ideal. Those aged 14 and up participated in maintaining the landscape, cleaning up, and beautifying the property.

“Liberty State Park is a beautiful and scenic location,” Mulligan said. “It’s impossible not to see the New York skyline, the views of the harbor, Lady Liberty, Ellis Island, and remain unaffected. It’s a perfect place to remember and reflect on the impact of what happened.”

The spirit of the day resonated with so

many. According to Mulligan, approximately 200 people volunteered to help, making this occasion an uplifting one. As well as locals, people across the state even joined in! “I love to see the different people of different demographics working with others,” she said.

Past projects included revitalizing memorials, 5K’s, landscaping, and so much more.

No matter the activity or project, for Mulligan, they can be inspiring teaching tools, opening doors to communication.

“The event provides an opportunity for families to talk about September 11th and the attacks,” Mulligan related. “Many young people have no idea what happened on September 11, 2001. They were not there to see. By families participating in our Day of Service and Remembrance event, it opens up a conversation between children and parents. For the young children making kits, for example, they can talk about who first responders are, and the sacrifices they make for others. It gives them an opportunity to really share with them what happened on that day. How people unselfishly helped others. It’s all about teaching the younger generation and instilling new life in this event.”

CCM Takes Part in New Jersey’s Tuition-Free Grant Program Students Should Check Their Eligibility Now

A

s a result of the expansion of the New Jersey Community College Opportunity Grant (CCOG) to all county colleges in the state, County College of Morris (CCM) now is offering this tuition assistance program to students.

The CCOG may cover the full cost of tuition and approved educational fees for 6-18 credits after all federal, state, institutional and community aid have been applied.

To qualify, students need to have a family adjusted gross income of no more than $65,000, not already have an associate or bachelor’s degree, be registered for 6–18 credits, and have completed the Free Appli-

cation for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or if a New Jersey Dreamer the New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application.

The first step is to apply to CCM, which can be done online at www.ccm. edu/admissions, and then fill out the FAFSA at https:// studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa or if a New Jersey Dreamer the New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application at www.hesaa.org/Pages/ NJAlternativeApplication. aspx. The deadline to apply for the FAFSA is September 15.

CCOG is not just for traditional students. Those in the workforce who would like to earn or complete their college degree also may quality.

Mid-Atlantic Horticultural Therapy Conference Comes To The Frelinghuysen Arboretum

n Friday, September 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Mid-Atlantic Horticultural Therapy Network will hold their annual conference at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township, NJ. The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is the perfect setting to hold this year’s event as the theme is horticultural therapy. The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, a facility of the Morris County Park Commission, has a dynamic horticultural therapy program, which provides internships for high school students with special needs, as well as recreational classes for a wide range of populations from seniors, adults with development and physical disabilities, as well as children with special needs.

The conference will bring together horticultural therapists from the mid-Atlantic region and interested

friends and families.

Speaker and Registered Horticultural Therapist, Patty Cassidy will share her experience providing horticultural therapy programming to individuals with memory loss. She works at the award-winning Portland Memory Garden, part of the Portland Public Parks System.

Participants of the conference can enjoy a guided tour of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum gardens, including the Scherer Garden for special needs populations, and participate in mock classes engaging in an activity utilized in horticultural therapy classes.

Registration is required and can be made by visiting mahtn.org. The cost is $85 per person which includes morning refreshments, lunch, craft materials, lecture, and tours.

nother school year means millions of children across the country are boarding buses at the beginning and end of each day, and it provides an appropriate opportunity for parents, teachers, school administrators and students themselves to practice and enforce safety guidelines in and around the school bus.

Consider these tips from the experts at the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) to help keep children safe before bus rides, during travel and after exiting the vehicle.

Before the Bus Arrives Ensure backpacks are packed securely so papers and other items don’t scatter as the bus approaches.

Create a morning routine that puts kids at the bus stop five minutes before the scheduled pickup time. This helps avoid a last-minute rush, when safety lessons are easily forgotten, and ensures kids are safely in place for boarding.

Encourage children to wear bright, contrasting colors so they can be seen easier by drivers.

Instruct children to walk on the side-

Back-to-School Bus Safety walk. If there is no sidewalk, advise them to stay out of the street, walk single-file, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as possible.

Walk young children to the bus stop or encourage kids to walk in groups. There is safety in numbers; groups are easier for drivers to see.

If kids must cross a street, driveway or alley, remind them to stop and look both ways before crossing.

Verify the bus stop location offers good visibility for the bus driver; if changes are needed, talk with nearby homeowners or school district officials to implement changes. Never let kids wait in a house or car, where the driver may miss seeing them approach the bus.

Remind children that the bus stop is not a playground. Balls or other toys could roll into the street and horseplay can result in someone falling into the path of oncoming traffic.

Instruct children to stay at least three steps away from the road and allow the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it.

On the Bus Ride When boarding the bus, items can get bumped and dropped. Caution children that before picking anything up, they should talk to the driver and follow instructions to safely retrieve their possessions.

Teach safe riding habits: stay seated with head, hands and feet inside at all times; keep bags and books out of the aisle and remain seated until the bus stops moving.

Remind kids that just like when riding in cars, loud noises are off limits so they don’t distract the driver. That includes cellphones and other electronic devices; instruct children to put them on mute or use headphones.

For parents who meet their kids at the bus, remember that excited kids may dart across the street. Eliminate the risk by waiting on the side of the street where kids exit the bus.

Make the bus ride part of your daily “how was school?” discussion. Encourage kids to talk about the things they see and hear on the bus so you can discuss appropriate behaviors and, if necessary, report any concerns to school administrators.

As bullying is prevalent and buses are no exception, ask children to tell you about any bullying they observe, whether against another child or themselves, and talk about how to shut down bully behaviors.

How To Prevent Them

A

s parents, we do everything we can to prevent germs from coming home on our kids and into our families. But what about lice? Hand sanitizer, clean tissues and coughing into your elbow won’t ward off these hearty, little critters. So, if you want to keep your home and children lice-free, you should start putting some of these foolproof safeguards into place immediately.

Shampoo. While there certainly exist a great many lice-prevention hair products for our kids, many of them are pricey and only available online. For more budget-friendly, accessible options, consider searching for products that contain natural lice repellents such as tea tree oil, peppermint, lavender and coconut. (We use Suave Coconut sham-

poo and conditioner on my daughter’s long, thick head of hair for the entire school year. For only a few bucks a bottle, it’s worth every penny. Smells great, too.)

Don’t shampoo. Well, now I’m just being difficult. Let me back up a little. Yes, it’s true. A lice-preventive shampoo is a good idea. When you’re actually shampooing. But the bottom line is … you want to shampoo as infrequently as possible. Lice are naturally repelled by dirty hair. So bring on the dirt! It’s much less of a pain to deal with than an infestation. (Honestly, when we get one of those infamous warning letters sent home from school, we cut back to shampooing only twice a week. Better safe than sorry, right?)

Become a hair stylist. The last thing you want to do is leave hair loose and flowing. It makes for a very easy target.

So start Googling hairstyles and learning something new.

Ponytails, French braids, fishtails … they all work. Just be sure the hair is up and tight. And don’t be afraid to gel and spray your creations. Remember, the dirtier the better. (My son and daughter both spent many of their early school years “preventively coiffed.”)

Don’t share! It’s one of the only times you’re ever going to say these words to your kids. Sharing personal items

Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience

O

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience.

Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event.

Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering.

“I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab.

Schwab a ttended an Epic Experience camp in May 2015.

Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.”

Schwab joined the

Alumni Board of Epic Experience as an Outreach Specialist in June 2015.

In 2017, she became the Alumni Team lead, and in 2018 joined the Board of Directors.

How Chocolate Milk Can Aid in Replenishing Nutrients for Teen Athletes

B

etween sports practices, training, games and tournaments, teen athletes endure a lot of stress on their bodies.

While some parents know real dairy milk is a nutritious option for growing kids, many don’t realize that chocolate milk has nutritional benefits, too – especially when it comes to exercise recovery.

According to a first-ofits-kind study from the University of Texas at Austin, recovering with lowfat chocolate milk as part of a tough training routine could help teen athletes get stronger. The study included more than 100 high school athletes entering grades 9-12 who were enrolled in a five-week training program involving training four days a week.

Some students recovered with chocolate milk and

others recovered with a sports drink with the same amount of carbohydrates but no protein.

Researchers found that students who recovered with chocolate milk had greater strength gains compared to those who recovered with sports drinks.

In fact, the chocolate milk group bench-pressed an average of 3.5% more at the end of the program than at the beginning, whereas teens who recovered with sports drinks actually decreased their benchpress weight by close to the same amount, around 3.2%. Additionally, those who recovered with chocolate milk improved in squat strength by nearly twice as much as those who consumed sports drinks for post-workout recovery, lifting an average of 15% more weight (compared to about

8% more weight) by the program’s end.
