Bloomingdale Mayor Reappointed to New Jersey State League of Municipalities Executive Board

The 55-year-old Dunleavy was initially elected to the NJLM on November 17, 2011 and started serving in 2012.

“The League is the voice of municipalities to our legislators,” says Dunleavy. “The League reviews all legislation and may take a stand for or against. The League works with mayors from all towns.”

Dunleavy, who first served as a Borough of Bloomingdale Councilman from 2000 – 2005 prior to being elected to Mayor in 2011, explains his duties as an Executive Board member. “My position entails meeting with the full board to review policy and legislation. It also calls for me to attend state meetings to speak on various legislation. I find no challenges as the mission benefits all towns, (but) the one challenge is trying to find the time to devote more time to the League.” Dunleavy helps lead the Association of New Jersey’s 566 municipal governments. He represents the interests and needs of New Jersey’s local

The NJLM provides many services. The organization publishes New Jersey Municipalities Magazine, which provides up-to-theminute information on municipal administration and procedures.

The group also holds an educating November Annual Conference in Atlantic City. Clinics, panels and workshops, are conducted by the NJLM and associations of alliance professional and technical employees, where exhibited are the latest products and services for municipal government. Other services throughout the year are bureau of municipal information and a bureau reference desk, municipal resources and legal services, legislative advocacy, publications and references, resource guides and research publications, an Ordinances and Codes Library, as well as professional development seminars.

As for Board reappointments, they occur yearly. Per Dunleavy, who serves Bloomingdale in the capacity of Mayor full-time, “There is normally no replacement

unless a Mayor is unelected in their town.”

“My goal,” he states, “is to be a voice to the Governor and our legislators for Bloomingdale and our county.”

In Defense of Iowa

e have reached that time in every presidential nominating year when distinguished, national opinion leaders beat up on Iowa and that admirable state’s influential role in determining the two major parties’ eventual presidential nominees and, therefore, the next president. The USA Today editorial board indicts Iowa for being “one of the least ethnically diverse states in the country” and its status as the first-in-the-nation presidential test every four years as “ un-American,” while Paul Waldman writes in The Washington Post that the Iowa caucuses “are a crime against democracy.”

It is time someone stood up for Iowa and Iowans. It’s true that Iowa is neither very representative of the entire nation nor very average. Scholarly studies have ranked Iowa as tied for first place in percentage of the adult population who are high school graduates. Iowans are fourth highest in access to health care (more “representative” Florida and Texas rank 46th and 47th respectively in citizens’ access to health care); first in broadband access; and third highest in public libraries per capita. True, the Hawkeye State leads the nation in production of corn, soybeans and pork, but Iowans are at the top of the nation in literacy, and the state has the U.S.’s 14th lowest murder rate.

But Iowa remains a small, rural state in the middle of the country. How representative can its voters be of the nation at large? The answer: amazingly so. In 1992, Democrat Bill Clinton won 43% of the national vote and the White House; in Iowa, Clinton won 43% of the vote. In 1996, winner Clinton carried 49% of the national vote and 50% of the Iowa vote.

In 2000, Democrat Al Gore won the national vote by one-half of 1% and Iowa by one-third of 1%. Republican George

Mark Shields W Bush won reelection in 2004 with 51% of the national vote and 50% in Iowa.

Democrat Barack Obama, in 2008, got 53% of the national vote and 54% of Iowans. In 2012, Obama was reelected nationally by a margin of 4% and in Iowa by 5%. In 2016, the exception: Donald Trump, who lost the national vote by 2% to Hillary Clinton, carried Iowa by a solid 10%.

Yes, Iowa’s 2008 Democratic caucuses were 93% white, and those mid-American Caucasians made history by giving legitimacy and momentum to a freshman senator from Illinois, Barack Obama. In Iowa, the African American underdog won an upset victory over the heavily favored former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and was propelled to the top of the national polls.

In fact, the rest of us owe Iowa our thanks. Iowans faithfully and earnestly fulfill their civil responsibilities by showing up at campaign town halls and listening and questioning the men and women who seek the White House.

n November, I was banned in Boston after speech-squelchers on the left and right forced the cancellation of my lecture at Bentley University, a small private institution. The grassroots activists who had invited me were rejected by every major event venue in the nation’s purported Cradle of Liberty. The tail-tuckers cited security concerns or jacked up their rental fees to make it prohibitively expensive to gather peacefully to discuss -- gasp! -- ideas.

Lou Murray of Bostonians Against Sanctuary Cities and Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies heroically persisted, pulling together a great event at a private home attended by 100 patriots who risked their privacy, friendships and even their jobs to listen to -- gasp! -- ideas.

Soon after, a group of conservative students at the University of Maine, a publicly funded school, invited me to bring my nationalist message about who’s funding the destruction of America to their campus. This prompted the College Republicans’ faculty adviser, political science professor Amy Fried, to resign in protest. That led to the de-chartering of the CR group. Why? Because I refused to disavow other young students who have asked trenchant, pesky questions at Young America’s Foundation and Turning Point USA lectures about the GOP elites’ support of wage-suppressing, job-outsourcing, Democrat voter-importing policies that put American students, workers and families last.

Many of those students follow a 21-year-old nationalist named Nick Fuentes, who hosts a program (for now) on YouTube and DLive in his basement called “America First.” Because I re-

Yesterday, I learned from Portland Sheraton at Sable Oaks general manager Ed Palmer and others that at least one University of Maine official -- along with dozens of others cancel culture jihadists galvanized on social media by an anonymous Twitter account called “Support Maine’s Future” -- had called to complain about the students and me after they posted an event notice last Friday. I reached out to top administrators, who did not respond by my filing deadline.

orthern New Jersey Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS) and now America’s Boating Club, will offer the New Jersey State Police, Marine Services Bureau approved Boating Safety Course at James Caldwell High School from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. beginning on Tuesday, March 10, 2020.

The course taught by certified instructors licensed by the State of NJ, and which meets all the mandatory requirements necessary for obtaining your New Jersey Boat Safety Certificate, will run every Tuesday evening for seven weeks which includes a night for review, and a night for the required state examination. The cost of the course is $90.00.

In the caucus, firefighters join shoulder-to-shoulder with nurses, teachers, retirees, students and small businesswomen in truly vibrant democracy. Here in Iowa, because Iowans give them a full and fair chance, the underfinanced, under-

dog candidate has a real chance. It was in Iowa that Jimmy Carter broke through and where George H.W. Bush’s upset win would lead to his being chosen vice president.

Look for Changes in Retirement Plans

t might not have made the headlines, but a recently passed piece of legislation could affect the IRAs and 401(k)s of millions of Americans beginning in 2020. So, if you have either of these accounts, or if you run a business, you’ll want to learn more.

The new laws, collectively called the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act, include these noteworthy changes: • Higher age for RMDs – Under current law, you must start taking withdrawals – known as required minimum distributions, or RMDs – from your traditional IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan once you turn 70 ½. The new law pushes the date to start RMDs to 72, which means you can hold on to your retirement savings a bit longer.

• No age limit for traditional IRA contributions – Previously, you could only contribute to your traditional IRA until you were 70 ½, but under the SECURE Act, you can now fund your traditional IRA for as long as you have taxable earned income.

• Limitation of “Stretch IRA” provisions – Under the old rules, beneficiaries were able to stretch taxable RMDs from a retirement account over his or her lifetime. Under the SECURE Act while spouse beneficiaries

can still take advantage of this «stretch» distribution, most non-spouse beneficiaries will have to take all the RMDs by the end of the tenth year after the account owner passes away. Consequently, non-spouse beneficiaries who inherit an IRA or other retirement plan could have tax implications due to the need to take larger distributions in a shorter timeframe.

• No early withdrawal penalty for IRAs and 401(k)s when new child arrives. Typically, you must pay a 10% penalty when you withdraw funds from your IRA or 401(k) before you reach 59 ½. But now, with the new rules, you can withdraw up to $5,000 from your retirement plan without paying the early withdrawal penalty, as long as you take the money within one year of a child being born or an adoption becoming final.

Some provisions of the SECURE Act primarily affect business owners: • Multi-employer retirement plans – Unrelated companies can now work together to offer employees a 401(k) plan with less administrative work, lower costs and fewer fiduciary responsibilities than individual employers now encounter when offering their own retirement plans.

• Tax credit for automatic enrollment – The new law provides a tax credit of $500

for some smaller employers who set up automatic enrollment in their retirement plans. And a tax credit for establishing a retirement plan has been increased from $500 to $5,000.

• Use of annuities in 401(k) plans – It will now be easier for employers to consider including annuities as an investment option within 401(k) plans. Previously, many businesses avoided offering annuities in these plans due to liability concerns related to the annuity provider, but the new rules should help reduce these concerns.

By Dawn M. Chiossi ince 1974, Butler’s Tri-Boro Animal Welfare and Adoption Center has adhered to the belief that happy is the family that makes room for a pet. Often, they can be considered the very heartbeat of the family.

“We save our animals from all over the country, mostly from southern states,” explains Tri-Boro Animal Welfare President, Jamie Faber. “Our organization does allow for out of state adoptions, so we have adopters coming from various states to adopt from us.”

Located at 12 ​Belleview Avenue in Butler, sharing the building with Butler’s DPW, this organization has been ​operating as a non-profit since 1980,​ ​serving the town of Butler and surrounding areas for over 30 years.

“The Tri-Boro Animal Welfare as we know it today was formed in 2011 when Kinnelon separated us in order to provide for each neighboring community,” Faber tells.

While not much is known about the his-

tory of the shelter or its founder, for Faber, being part of it is truly a passion. “I have loved animals since I was a child and I wanted to get involved with shelter animals to learn more about helping homeless dogs and cats.”

Beginning volunteering at Tri-Boro in January of 2014, she took over as president in October of 2018. “I also run the volunteer dog foster program and foster dogs in my home,” Faber adds.

More than just a stop for unwanted dogs and cats, Butler’s Tri-Boro Animal Welfare and Adoption Center’s mission is to make sure that their animals are placed in the right hands and home-- for a family that will consider them its heartbeat.

Going above and beyond, the caring and compassionate volunteers that run the center make sure that it is more than just a revolving door for every animal that stays within its walls.

“Because of our small size, our animals get a lot of attention and our volunteers are really able to get to know each animal’s personalities as they get a lot of one on one

time with them,” Faber enthuses.

Knowing that not every dog and cat can be rubber-stamped as the same, Tri-Boro seeks to match the perfect pet to the perfect human. “All potential adopters are first screened by their adoption process.

Anyone who is interested in any of our adoptable animals has to first complete the online application,” Faber explains. “An animals’ personality, energy level, age, history (if known), medical needs, etc. are then taken into consideration when deciding if a potential adopter is the right fit. If our dog/ cat manager thinks that the applicant could be a good fit for the animal in which they applied for, they will then schedule a meet and greet. All members of the household must be present for this in order to evaluate interactions between all of the people and the animal.”

Faber goes on to say, “Veterinarian references and landlord checks are completed as well, to ensure that the applicant cares for any existing pets and that applicants are allowed to have animals in their home. If all goes well, then the applicant is approved to

take the animal home once the adoption fee is paid.”

Tri-Boro is so invested in finding the right adopter for their animals, that they keep everyone in mind regarding potential adoptions. “Just because an applicant is not approved for the animal in which they applied for, does not mean that we won’t adopt what we feel could be a more compatible pet for them at another time,” Faber asserts.

To date, this year Tri-Boro has set a record high for animal adoptions: 204 dog adoptions and 107 cat adoptions.

Ever proud of the close-knit community that they have built, giving back to animals in need, and building up their foster base so that these animals can eventually become the heartbeat of a family, the Tri-Boro Animal Welfare Center is open on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (unless they are hosting an adoption event at a different location).

Debunking Myths About Spaying And Neutering

ompanion animal overpopulation poses a considerable problem. The Humane Society of the United States says about 2.4 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized in American animal shelters each year - about one every 13 seconds. Many of these animals are the offspring of beloved pets or stray cats and dogs who reproduce unchecked.

One of the easiest solutions to the pet overpopulation problem is to have pets spayed or neutered. Another solution is for prospective pet owners to adopt pets from a nearby animal shelter - one that handles spaying and neutering for their adoptable animals.

Many pet owners are hesitant to have their animals spayed or neutered. That hesitation may stem from some prevailing myths surrounding spaying or neutering.

Myth: You can use neutering or spaying

interchangeably to describe the sterilization process.

Fact: Neutering is associated with male pets and the removal of the testicles. Spaying is for female pets and involves the removal of both the ovaries and uterus.

Myth: Recovery from spaying and neutering takes a long time.

Fact: Many veterinarians and animal clinics allow pet owners to bring their pets home on the same day the animal is spayed or neutered. Pets are usually fully recovered within a week of having the surgery.

Myth: Removing reproductive organs will make my pet get fat and lazy.

Fact: Weight gain is not a byproduct of spaying and neutering. Pet weight gain is typically linked to an unhealthy diet and inadequate exercise.

What happens if I don’t file on time?

There’s no penalty for filing a late tax return after the deadline if you are set to receive a refund. However, penalties and interest are due if taxes are not filed on time or a tax extension is not requested AND you owe tax.To avoid this problem, file your taxes as soon as you can because the penalties can pile up pretty quickly. The failure-to-file penalty is 5 percent of the unpaid tax added for each month (or part of a month) that a tax return is late.

Can I file for an extension?

If you are not on track to complete your tax return by April 15, you can file an extension to give you until Oct. 15 to file your tax return. Be aware that it is only an extension of time to file - not an extension of time to

pay taxes you owe. You still need to pay all taxes by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest.So even if you plan to file an extension, a preliminary review of your tax documents is necessary to determine whether or not you need to make a payment when the extension is filed.

What are my tax payment options?

You have many options to pay your income tax. You can mail a check, pay directly from a bank account with IRS direct pay, pay with a debit or credit card (for a fee), or apply online for an IRS payment plan.No matter how you pay your tax bill, finalize tax payment arrangements by the end of the day on April 15.

When will I get my refund?

According to the IRS, 90 percent of refunds for e-filed returns are processed in less than 21 days. Paper filed returns will take longer.24 hours after you receive your e-file confirmation (or 4 weeks after you mail a paper tax return), you can use the Where’s My Refund? feature on the IRS website to

Oops, I forgot a tax document. Now what?

The first thing to do is determine the impact the new information has on your filed return. For example, if you claim the standard deduction and then receive a mortgage interest statement that does not bring your expenses above the deduction threshold, there’s nothing more you need to do. Simply file the statement with your other tax documents.If, on the other hand, you receive something like a Form 1099 with additional income, you will need to amend the tax return to claim the income. Adopt, Don’t Shop: Saving All Paws in Kinnelon

By Dawn M. Chiossi dopt, don’t shop! This is the rallying cry of Saving All Paws North Jersey in Kinnelon. Kinnelon’s Saving All Paws organization is dedicated to aiding humans’ furry friends, namely cats and kittens (with some dogs as well.)

Describing the organization as more of a rescue than a shelter, Saving All Paws is the inspiration of founder Michelle Saladnio Famularo, along with Theresa Pardalis and Kristy Ruiz.

“We are a group of really passionate people dedicating their free time to helping animals in need,” asserts Famularo. “We’ve been rescuing on our own for years, (even on the side in their free time) working with various rescues. In 2017 I founded an organization called “Friends of Kinnelon Animals” with the intent to help with the recovery of lost pets, advice/guidance, etc,” she tells. “Around the end of 2018, I asked Theresa and Kristy to join the board and we would re-brand to “Saving All Paws North Jersey, Inc.” And they did so enthusiastically. All three are unanimous in their philosophy to encourage everyone to adopt when it comes to adding a pet to the household. Their goal is simple: To rescue these companion animals and rehome them so they can be a loving addition to a family.

Their mission is an involved, but utterly fulfilling one: Saving All Paws does everything from rescuing animals from dangerous or neglectful situations, or those in danger of being euthanized, to rescuing found animals, to providing temporary shelter and care (including veterinary), to place adoptable rescued animals in permanent homes, to educate and promote the importance of spaying/neutering companion animals, to educate the public on how to help prevent animal cruelty, to aid and assist pet owners with search and recovery of lost pets, and to trap, neuter, vaccinate and return community cats/kittens.

A tall order? Not for these dedicated volunteers, who are often working on their own time to give each and every animal a chance at a decent life, often trapping ferals at 10:00 or 11:00 at night. “We have always been animal lovers,” Famularo tells, “When my dad asked me what kind of car I wanted, I told him I didn’t want a car, I wanted a horse,” she quips.

For Ruiz, who is very active with TNVR, asserts, “I’m very proud that we share a common goal. We are all able to come together as a team to ensure the welfare of these ani-

mals and know that we can make a difference in their lives in some way.”

They are thrilled to be celebrating their first annual Tricky Tray and Beefsteak fundraiser, to be held on February 22nd at the Bloomingdale Firehouse. Entitled “Small Paws, Big Cause: A Night For Second Chances,” all proceeds will go to benefit the animals. Prep time: 25 minutes Servings: 6 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped 1 English cucumber, ends trimmed (about 14 ounces) 1/2 cup roasted red pepper hummus 1/2 cup reduced-fat crumbled feta cheese 5 cherry tomatoes, quartered Heat oven to 350 F. On small baking sheet, arrange walnuts evenly. Bake 8 minutes, checking frequently, until toasted.

Slice cucumber crosswise into 3/4-inch thick slices. Using small spoon, gently scoop out and discard center of each cucumber slice, leaving bottom and sides intact.

In small bowl, stir 6 tablespoons chopped walnuts and hummus. Spoon walnut-hummus mixture into each cucumber slice and top with reserved chopped walnuts, feta cheese and quartered tomatoes.

1 tablespoon cumin seeds 1 tablespoon coriander seeds 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/4 cup Shamrock Farms Heavy Cream 1 lemon, zest only, finely chopped 2 teaspoons hot smoked paprika 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 pound ground beef Dipping Sauce: 1 cup Shamrock Farms Whole Milk 1 cup goat cheese 1/4 cup fresh mint, loosely packed and julienned 1/2 teaspoon sugar Breading: 2 whole eggs 1teaspoon water all-purpose flour panko bread crumbs

To make polpettes: Heat oven to 350 F. In pan, cover chiles with hot water; simmer until chiles are soft and pliable. In warm sauté pan, toast cumin and coriander until fragrant. In spice grinder, grind until seeds turn to powder.

Remove chiles from water; reserve water. In blender, combine chiles, garlic, ground spices, tomato paste, lemon juice, heavy cream, lemon zest, hot smoked paprika, salt and 1/2 cup reserved chile water; blend until smooth, thick paste forms.

Combine spicy harissa sauce with beef; mix well to incorporate. Roll into 2-ounce balls and place on sheet tray. Cook 10 minutes. Remove and allow to cool. Leave oven on.

To make dipping sauce: In food processor, blend milk, goat cheese, mint and sugar. Place in dipping bowl in refrigerator until ready to serve.

To make breading: In pan, crack eggs and add water; whip to incorporate. In separate pans, place flour and bread crumbs. Roll cooled polpettes in flour. Dust off excess. Roll in egg wash then breadcrumbs; set aside. Repeat until all polpettes are breaded.

Place polpettes back on sheet tray. Cook until golden brown, approximately 10-12 minutes. Serve polpettes hot with chilled dipping sauce.

Note: If unable to find specific chiles, substitute any Mexican chile variety.

Bloomingdale’s Main Street Recipient of Planning Project Grant

By Steve Sears he Borough of Bloomingdale recently received a $70,000 grant from the Highlands Council to support a three-step Sustainable Economic Redevelopment Plan to revitalize its downtown Main Street area.

The Borough applied for the grant.

Mark S. Lohbauer, who is a principal for JGSC Group of Merchantville, New Jersey, and is in charge of the group’s

field work and supports their analysis, says, “When you think about how traditional downtowns like Bloomingdale evolved over the years, they really happened by accident.

Tanya Rohrbach, Community Planning Manager for New Jersey Future in Trenton, New Jersey, agrees that “sustainable” is a key word. “What we’re trying to do is think of a more sustainable economic development as one that sort of relies on redevelopment – the town center, so that it’s walkable, makes it a really vibrant place where people really want to be. We want to look at establishing that sense of place in Bloomingdale. It’s a really great opportunity.” Rohrback and her team will be inserting a place-based component into the market analysis. “A lot of times that’s a missing component in recommendations for economic development. We’re going to be engaged in interviews, surveying, but also doing a land use analysis to assess that community component of community design and form.“ The process will be in three stages. The first step involves community engagement, interviewing stakeholders, and doing a town-wide survey online, which should begin later this month and take three to four months. The second will be the New

Jersey Future analysis, which will take up to two months, and step number three, developing the strategic action plan, using all information gathered and understanding what it all means, should take two to three months.

“Bloomingdale’s goals for growth and downtown revitalization are very closely aligned with the goals of the Highlands RMP (Regional Master Plan),” says Highlands Council Chairman Carl Richko in a press release. “The RMP seeks to direct growth to areas where development already exists and away from less developed areas. Sustainable economic development and redevelopment plans like the one we are funding for Bloomingdale directly address the prevention of continued sprawl across our remaining farmlands and open spaces.”

Bloomingdale Mayor Jon Dunleavy is excited and envisions a grand new Main Street. “The Borough would like to thank the Highlands Council for funding our $70,000 Main Street planning Grant. The Borough is excited and committed to investing and improving our downtown area.”

Saint Valentine’s Day; the Legend

By Henry M. Holden ost of us are familiar with St. Valentine’s Day. Every February 14, people exchange Saint Valentine’s Day messages of affection, love and devotion around the world. According to the History Channel, approximately 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged on Valentine’s Day. That makes it the second most card sending day in the world.

Why is it the most important human emotion is so poorly celebrated and lost in a ritualistic exchange of chocolates, silly cards, and stuffed animals?

At least one movie, a romantic comedy, was produced in 2010 about the day. The movie follows nearly two dozen people as they find and lose love in all its many forms over the course of the title day. Critics called it, “glib, shallow, lame, and stale” so it is no wonder the movie yielded only an 18-percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

But that one bad apple should not spoil the barrel, and why the day is celebrated.

The American Film Industry listed their 100 best love stories with Casablanca (1942) coming in at number one. Number 100 is Jerry McGuire (1996) and number 50 is Shakespeare in Love (1998). Strangely, in the 20 years since Shakespeare in Love there has not been a love story added to the list.

The day became infamous for a short time when seven members of Chicago’s North Side Gang were gunned down in a garage in what became known as the “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.” It remains one of Chicago’s darkest moments but has never darkened the spirits of lovers on that day.

St. Valentine’s Day is also clouded by fanciful and mysterious legends. The traditional observance of Saint Valentine’s Day comes from an early pagan ritual of Lupercalia and Christian legends surrounding the martyrdom of a priest. Historically, Valentine’s Day has nothing to do with love.

Little is known of the saint’s life, but most church historians believe he is at least the namesake of the holiday. If we look back on the origins of romantic love, we find the custom emerged long after the saint died.

There are several legends surrounding Saint Valentine’s Day. The story of St. Valentine’s Day begins in the third century with the Roman Emperor Claudius ll. According to one legend, Claudius had prohibited marriage of young men, claiming bachelors made better soldiers. Valentine, possibly a priest, continued to secretly perform marriage ceremonies until he was

eventually apprehended by the Romans and put to death.

The most documented legend is the story of a priest/physician name Valentinus who fell in love with the daughter of Claudius’ jailer. Contrary to popular belief, he was not initially a Christian priest but a pagan healer.

It was during the Roman persecution of the Christians that Emperor Claudius had ordered all Romans to worship twelve gods. He had also made it a crime punishable by death to aid or associate with Christians. As a healer, it was Valentinus’ job to help people. Not even the threat of death could keep him from practicing his healing arts. Eventually they arrested him for helping Christians.

Ancient Rome did not have a speedy trial in their judicial system, and Valentinus languished for months in his stone cell.

While in prison, he met many Christians and saw the dignity and conviction they had in their faith. Their strength gave Valentinus the strength he needed, and he converted to Christianity.

Over the months he became friends with a jailer. The jailer, seeing Valentinus was a man of learning, asked if he could bring his blind daughter to Valentinus for lessons in Roman history. His daughter’s name was Asterius (some say Julia) and she was quick to learn. Valentinus read the history of Rome to her, described the world of nature, and taught her the Word of Jesus Christ. Asterius saw the world of Jesus through Valentinus’ eyes. She trusted him and found comfort in his quiet strength.

“Valentinus does the Lord really hear our prayers?” she asked him one day.

“Yes, my child, He hears each one.”

“Do you know what I pray for every day?” She queried. “I pray that I might see.

I want to see everything you’ve told me about.”

“The Lord does what is best for us if we will believe in him.,” Valentinus said.

Valentinus’ faith in the Lord was unswerving. “Let us kneel together and pray to the Lord Jesus Christ for strength.” As they knelt in prayer, a brilliant light invaded the prison cell.

Asterius cried out, “Valentinus I can see! I can see!”

“Praise be to the Lord,” exclaimed Valentinus. After calming Asterius the two knelt in a prayer of thanksgiving.

In those days, declaring a miracle in the name of Jesus Christ sealed his fate. On

the eve of his death, Valentinus wrote a note to Asterius urging her to stay close to the Lord and pray for strength. Valentinus, resigned to his own death, did not admonish his captors. He wrote to Asterius that it was God’s will. He signed a note “from your Valentinus.”

On February 14, 270 A.D., Valentinus was clubbed to death and beheaded near a gate in Rome now called Porto Valentinus in his memory. Asterius secretly planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave in what today is the Church of Praxedes. Today, the almond tree remains a symbol of love and friendship.

Several centuries went by and slowly Christians were able to emerge and publicly display and practice their faith.

The pagan Romans, now in a minority, still celebrated the feast of Lupercalia which had been popular from around 4-B.C. The church decided it was time to replace the pagan custom with a Christian observance.

The pagan celebration honoring Lupercus, was the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Pan, a deity of fertility. It involved a bloody animal sacrifice, one of the many pagan customs abhorrent to the Christians. The names of teenage women were placed in a box and drawn at random by adolescent men. The feast had all the trappings of a young man’s rite of passage.

Determined to end this eight-hundredyear-old practice, the church sought a saint to replace the deity Lupercus. Since Valentine’s death fell on the eve of the feast, he was a convenient candidate to usurp the popularity of Lupercalia. In 496 A.D., Pope Gelasius outlawed the mid-February Lupercalia feast. The pope was clever enough to retain the random selection, aware of the Roman’s love for games of chance. In the box that was once held the names of available and single women, he replaced the names with the names of saints. Both Christian men and women drew slips of paper and were asked to emulate the life of the saint’s name they drew for the coming year.

The spiritual overseer of this “game” was St. Valentine. For the women to draw the names of the saints must have disappointed many Roman males. Rather than be cut out of the picture and replaced by a saint, the young Roman men established a custom of offering women they admired a handwritten greeting of affection. They tied it into the drawing of the saint’s names and the greetings eventually acquired St. Valentine’s name.

With the passage of still more time Christianity spread throughout the world.

The affectionate greeting also spread with Christianity. By the 16th century, Valentine’s Day cards had all but eliminated the lottery of saints. St. Francis deSales, Bishop of Geneva, try to reinstate the lottery but with no success.

Instead of the cards disappearing, they proliferated and became more decorative.

By the 18th century, greeting cards with Cupid, the cherub, armed with arrows dipped in a love potion became a popular Valentine’s Day image in England. He became associated with the holiday because in Roman mythology, he is the son of Venus, goddess of love and beauty. The cards did not become wide-spread in the United States until around 1850 when a New England native began mass-reproducing them.

Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, and heroic figure but above all, a romantic figure.

Today many of us send modern Valentine messages to reaffirm what Jean Valjean said in Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, “The supreme happiness in life is in the conviction that we are all loved.” Let us

make this month not just a month of love, but the happy beginning to a year of loving and being loved and fulfil the Scripture the apostle Paul advised us, “Let all that you do be done in love,” (Cor. 16:14 NASB) In the words of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…” Give someone your message of affection on Saint Valentine’s Day in other ways that may be even more loving, memorable and lasting. Go back to when it all started by creating a second first date.

Order the same foods, request the same songs, and see how many details you can recall from your first kiss.

After dinner head for a karaoke bar. After all, what better way to celebrate your chemistry than singing classic-couples’ duets such as Sonny and Cher’s “I Got You Babe” together.

Okay, the weather may not be great, so you don’t want to go out. Create a themed dinner and movie night at home. Find the movie Roman Holiday and watch Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck fall in love. Of course, you’ll need to accompany this with an Italian meal such as Lasagna, spaghetti and meat balls or your own creative dish.

Remember we may give without loving, but we cannot love without giving.

Dad’s Love for the Old Morris Canal

By Richard Mabey Jr. y father had a great love for the history of the old Morris Canal. After all, his father, Watson Mabey, worked as an Engineer on Incline Plane Ten East in Lincoln Park.

And, his grandfather, William Mabey, once owned and operated an icehouse along the banks of the canal. The Morris Canal was a page of New Jersey history that was near and dear to his heart.

For over 20 years, my Dad served as the Vice President of the Lincoln Park Historical Society. And, in that time, Dad must have given well over a hundred educational talks on the old Morris Canal. Most of the talks that Dad gave, were at the Lincoln Park Museum. One of Dad’s favorite subjects, for his many talks, was explaining the intricate mechanics of how an incline

hen you see frost on the windows in the morning, feel the crunch of leaves underfoot and hear the roar of fire in the fireplace, old man winter has returned.

While you often hear about cold-weather fashion and beauty essentials, there is some maintenance your home needs too. Give your sanctuary some love with these five steps from the home safety experts at Kidde.

Clean Your Oven Ranges and cooktops are involved in 62% of home fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Stovetops and ranges, in particular, caused 87% of home fire deaths. Particularly in the winter when comfort foods are prominent, it’s necessary to clean your oven and stovetop to remove grease and fat, which can ignite. Always keep towels and oven mitts away from hot appliances.

Keep a Kitchen Fire Extinguisher Ready Research from the National Fire Protection Association shows about half of all home fires start in the kitchen, so it’s important to have a fire extinguisher handy. Look for one specifically designed for kitchen applications, and keep the extinguisher behind you when cooking. In the event of a fire, there’s risk of burning yourself if you must reach over the fire to grab the extinguisher.

Know Holiday Lighting Rules About 75% of holiday tree fires happen in December or January, according to the National Fire Protection Association, making now the perfect time to start being vigilant.

Some rules of thumb: use flame-resistant decorations, utilize lights properly indoors or outdoors and look for electrical decorations that are approved by a nationally recognized testing lab such as UL, Intertek or CSA. Also avoid plugging more than three light strings into each other; opt for a power strip instead.

Check Your Smoke Alarms Check your smoke alarms to ensure they are less than 10 years old. Winter and the holiday season are peak times for home fires, but according to industry experts, few realize smoke alarms need to be replaced at least every 10 years. In fact, common misconceptions about smoke alarm maintenance, such as hardwired alarms don’t need to be changed, can leave you more vulnerable. Smoke alarms are just like every other appliance; they need replaced periodically. This includes units that are hardwired into your home, even if you have changed the batteries. If you’ve forgotten when the alarms were installed, check the date on the back of the smoke alarm. If you’re interested in a long-term fix, alarms are available with a

Install Carbon Monoxide Alarms On average, one person dies each day from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in the United States.
