Jeter was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1992 as the sixth overall pick.

Over the course of his 20 year career in the MLB, Jeter was able to cash in on some major awards, picking up Rookie of the Year, 5x Silver Slugger, All Star Game MVP, World Series MVP, 5x Gold Glove winner, and a 14x all star, among many others.

His career came to a close on Sept. 28, 2014 at Fenway Park in Boston, MA. “Every accolade that has been bestowed on Derek throughout his career has been earned and deserved.

n the seven presidential elections since 1992, the Republican presidential nominee has won the popular vote exactly once. The lone GOP candidate to receive a majority of the national vote was George W. Bush in 2004. Bush’s election-day victory over Democrat John Kerry, who had, in most observers’ views, “won” the debates between the two, was explained by the respected Democratic pollster Peter Hart: “Voters preferred I Like over IQ.” One test of deciding between presidential nominees is, “Who would you rather have a beer with?” which is another way of asking which White House challenger the voter personally likes more than the other. In short, our ballot for president is the most “personal” vote we Americans cast. Almost always, we pick the candidate with whom we are more comfortable and, more significantly, the candidate whose judgment and character we think we could depend upon in a personal crisis.

As evidence of the weight of the “I like” factor in presidential voting, let’s look at recent contests: In 2012, Barack Obama, the winner, was rated 52% personally favorable by voters, while Mitt Romney’s scores were 47% favorable and 50% unfavorable. In 2008, Americans had a rare positive choice. In the last Gallup poll before election day, John McCain was given a favorable rating by 57% of Americans and was barely eclipsed by Barack Obama’s 61% favorable score. In 2004, winner George W. Bush was 53% favorable among voters on election day, while John Kerry’s numbers were at 47%-51%. In 1992 and 1996, voters liked Democrat Bill Clinton more than they liked both then-President George H. W. Bush and Sen. Bob Dole. Of course, the outlier election was 2016, when both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump received historically low favorability scores. About

Mark Shields 1 in 5 voters rated both candidates unfavorably but, when forced to choose between the two, voted for Trump with 3-2 odds.

But what about the 2020 Outsider who’s on our living rooms TVs at every timeout of every game, at every commercial break between weather reports, news coverage and even during the Super Bowl? Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, an authentic billionaire, is spending at a rate unprecedented in American politics. And it is paying off.

In most recent national polls, Bloomberg -- on the strength of his wall-to-wall media campaign -- has risen to double digits and as high as third place in some surveys.

We know that Michael Bloomberg has supported and spent generously to back candidates and initiatives that reflect his own priorities of gun control and climate change. In the eyes of some Democrats, Bloomberg’s political history -- his quarter-million-dollar gift to South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham; the more than $11 million the mayor donated in 2016 to Pennsylvania continued on page 6

Tyranny of the Tamiflunatics

eware of clickbait character assassins masquerading as “journalists.”

This is a lesson America should have learned after the mass media defamation of the Covington Catholic schoolboys last year. Just a few weeks ago, innocent teenager Nick Sandmann won a multimillion-dollar settlement against CNN for leaping to conclusions and attempting to ruin his life in pursuit of a political agenda driven by confirmation bias. The Washington Post and NBC News face similar lawsuits for potential damages totaling more than a half-billion dollars.

False allegations have consequences.

And yet, here we are again.

In Colorado last week, a young family was hurled into a national firestorm created by a single, powerful NBC News vigilante with an ideological ax to grind.

“Investigative reporter” Brandy Zadrozny lit the fuse on Feb. 6 with a Twitter post announcing that a 4-year-old had died of the flu. According to the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 10,000 Americans (including nearly 70 children) have died of the flu this season. So what made this Colorado toddler’s tragic death newsworthy?

The NBC News journalist condemned the boy’s mom for having reached out to a Facebook health-centered parents’ group whose members recommended that she not give her child Tamiflu medicine that a pediatrician had prescribed.

Some commenters on the group had advised home remedies, including essential oils and vitamin C. Zadrozny linked to her incendiary hit piece on the mom and the “Stop Mandatory Vaccination” Facebook group, which was titled: “On Facebook, anti-vaxxers urged a mom not to give her son Tamiflu. He later died.”

The toxic inference is clear: “An-

Michelle Malkin ti-vaxxers” are guilty of spreading online “misinformation” that led the mom to withhold a purportedly life-saving modern medicine -- and Facebook is guilty for not stopping it.

Zadrozny is a self-anointed and self-appointed social media policewoman whose main focus is pressuring Facebook to shut down discussion groups she doesn’t like. She labels all vaccine skeptics as conspiracy theorists without refuting facts or responding to peer-reviewed journal citations and historical data. She uses her bully pulpit to harangue Facebook into censoring laypeople seeking alternatives to “mainstream” medicine.

Zadrozny quoted “experts” fretting about parents who discuss their objections to coercive mandates and missives of Big Pharma and Big Government. Her article sneered at “natural remedies.”

The magic words “anti-vaxx” triggered the Two Minutes Hate theater that sent “Tamiflu” trending on Twitter.

The nicer messages called for the boy’s grieving mom to be arrested and imprisoned. Many advocated that she continued on page 6

Reclaiming Our Voice: New Jersey’s Central Role in the Fight for Woman Suffrage at Pequannock Library

illian Feickert, president of the NJ Woman Suffrage Association from 1912-1920, explores the overlooked role of New Jersey in the long frustrating fight for women’s suffrage. Many do not realize that some NJ women once had the right to vote and then lost it for over a century. Feickert shares stories about how nationally-known suffrage advocates Lucy Stone and Elizabeth Cady Stanton staged tax and voting protests in the state.

She describes how Alice Paul became the dynamo who re-energized the push for a federal amendment and how Dr. Florence Spearing Randolph brought black women into the movement. Participants will learn that women were not “given” the vote, but fought for it for generations.

Carol Simon Levin is a professional storyteller and independent historian who specializes in telling the stories of “fascinating

women history forgot” through first person portrayals. She has authored the book, Remembering the Ladies: From Patriots in Petticoats to Presidential Candidates, which profiles 69 women who worked to make a place for women in American politics. Carol holds a BA focusing on women’s history & history of technology from Cornell University and a MLS from the University of Arizona.

This free event takes place on Friday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m. at the Pequannock Township Public Library.

User Hayden chimed in: “She clearly should be executed, as should the person who posted the nonsense on FB, as well as anyone who liked said nonsense, ALL EXECUTED!!”

Zadrozny’s inciting tweet now has nearly 40,000 retweets, 5,000 comments and 72,000 likes.

Lost in all of these crazed point-andsputter diatribes were some pertinent, pesky facts.

But we do not know who Mike Bloomberg really is. Does he have a temper or a sense of humor? Can he laugh at himself? Would we want him as a neighbor? Can he personally ask the machinist in Dayton and her husband for their votes? Or is he a billionaire who, like so many people with money, is most comfortable surrounded by high-priced, professional bootlickers

who tell him how much smarter, more successful and more qualified he is to be president than anyone else?

Through his sophisticated and expensive TV and internet campaigns, we are learning what Mike Bloomberg wants us to know about him. What voters have yet to find out -- and will not know until he’s in the arena, mixing it up with the other Democrats and on the debate stage -- is whether we will like Mike.

had changed course after Montoya had commented to the Facebook group. Nor did she independently verify whether the parents were “anti-vaxx” or what vaccines besides the controversial flu vaccine (whose effectiveness has been challenged worldwide by health officials) they had chosen to avoid. A local television station, however, did the reporting Zadrozny failed to do.

It turns out the entire family, except for 4-year-old Najee Jr., had been suffering from influenza B. A 10-month-old brother who had been running a high fever had been seen at my neighborhood Children’s Hospital in Colorado Springs the afternoon before Najee Jr. fell ill. Montoya told Fox31 TV in Colorado Springs: “We called the doctors. We called the hospital. We gave them the medicine we were instructed to give.

We did everything.”

Those who have already prejudged the mom respond that she must be lying. What if she is telling the truth? And why hadn’t Zadrozny updated her story as of Feb. 11? I asked the online social media monitor that question publicly on Twitter, but she failed to respond by my deadline.

More to the point, it’s quackery to suggest that Tamiflu would have saved Najee Jr.’s life. The respected Cochrane researchers in Britain have concluded there is no

evidence the medicine reduces mortality or hospitalizations. In 2006, the FDA updated the Tamiflu label indicating that it could cause psychiatric problems. Japan banned Tamiflu for teenagers amid concerns about deleterious side effects.

Just days before Zadrozny crucified Najee Jr’s family, a Denver mom publicly warned that her 8-year-old daughter suffered hallucinations from Tamiflu. Earlier this week, a 16-year-old girl in Leesburg, Va. with the flu died of cardiac arrest. She had been prescribed Tamiflu. Another 16-yearold in Ohio died of the flu last month after suffering a stroke. She, too, had been prescribed Tamiflu.

Their cases didn’t make NBC News headlines, because they don’t fit the dissent-squelching narrative. Tamiflunatics, vaccine bullies and their media gatekeepers spread misinformation that destroys lives.

They are the true public health threats.

Martial Arts Teacher has a great responsibility to its students. A traditional teacher is responsible to encourage, motivate and provide tools for students to be successful in and out of the Dojo. As student’s problems arise (and they will), a teacher will call on the vast lessons of the past to try to help the student (or parent) overcome, diffuse and/or adapt to the new difficulty.

In the Dojos (Martial Arts Schools) that I have trained in, the teachers have

passed down knowledge through small antidotes. I hope some of these help you as much as they have helped me.

1. “Aerodynamically a Bumble Bee should not be able to fly, but nobody told it.” Mary Kay Ash This is possibly the greatest lesson I have learned as a student of the Martial Arts. Belief in your self is more important then even your current skill level. Why? Because your current skill level can improve. During the press conference that was hosted by the Hall of Fame, Jeter discussed how playing baseball is all he ever wanted to do, the Hall of Fame far from his mind.

“This is something that is not a part of the dream when you are playing. When you are playing, and you are just trying to keep your job, that’s first and foremost, and you are trying to compete year in and year out, and trying to win, and when your career is over and done with, then it’s up to the writ-

ers.” Jeter said.

While he is no longer playing baseball, he now sits as the Chief Executive Officer of the MLB’s Miami Marlins franchise, where he oversees day to day operations of the team. Coping with the Loss of a Pet

T

he strong bonds many people share with their pets can make the death of those pets, be it sudden or expected, difficult to handle. It’s not uncommon to be traumatized when a pet dies, and such grief may be influenced by the pet’s age at the time of its death, the circumstances surrounding that death and the nature of the relationship between the owner and pet.

Different pet owners deal with the death of a pet in different ways, but the following are some ways to cope with the loss of a companion animal.

Recognize that everyone feels differently.

Grief is expressed in many different ways.

What one person experiences may not be the norm for another. You may go through a variety of emotions, from anger at the circumstances and being left without your pet, to guilt if you believe there may have been something more you could have done to prolong the animal’s life. Mourn in your own way, and afford others the same oppor-

tunity.

Reach out to others. Grief often can turn a person inward, and your feelings may be bottled up. Talking about your emotions, whether it’s with a trusted friend or even a therapist, may help. Online message boards that cover grief and pet loss may provide the support you need. Leaning on others who have been in your shoes may help you recover more quickly.

Create mementos or a legacy for the pet.

Creating mementos may help children who are having their own difficulty dealing with pet loss. Work with your child to create a photo album or plant a tree to honor your pet.

Dealing with a pet that must be euthanized can be especially difficult. Pet owners can choose to be in the room during the procedure, and that decision should not be made lightly. If you think you can handle it and you want to be there to comfort your pet, then you might be more comfortable continued on page 11

Homeowner Alert! Review Your Tax Forms New Tax Rules are Creating Confusion

B

ecause of new laws many home related tax rules have changed and now require you to prove how funds are used to qualify for a deduction. This is catching many taxpayers by surprise.

So when your mortgage company reports tax-related information to you and the IRS using Form 1098, it no longer means all the interest and points reported on these statements are tax-deductible.

Mortgage interest deductions have new loan amount limits. For new mortgages starting on or after Dec. 15, 2017, you can deduct interest on up to $750,000 of the loan (down from $1 million for mortgages initiated before Dec. 15, 2017). If your original mortgage is above the threshold, a calculation will be done to determine the deductible amount of interest. You can’t simply deduct the full amount of interest being reported on your Form 1098.

Proceeds not used to buy a home add complexity. Proceeds from home equity debt that are not used to build, buy or substantially improve a qualified home are no longer tax-deductible. This includes mortgage or home equity proceeds used to pay

for college expenses, debit consolidation or other purposes. Mortgage companies issuing these loans will still send you a Form 1098, but it’s up to you to prove how you use the funds during the current year and any prior year.

Mortgage points requires review of settlement statements. Points are paid as a way to obtain a lower interest rate. Generally, points are deductible in the year they are paid, but they have more restrictions than mortgage interest. Points paid to refinance an existing mortgage, for example, may need to be deducted over the life of the loan. If you bought or refinanced a home in 2018, a review of your mortgage settlement statement may be required to ensure proper tax treatment of the cost of your points.

Mortgage insurance premiums are not deductible. Congress did not extend the mortgage insurance premium deduction for 2018. If you pay mortgage insurance, don’t wait to file your taxes thinking Congress will change their minds. File your taxes on a timely basis and expect to feel the impact of this eliminated deduction.

With these changes, properly calculating 2018 mortgage deductions is more complicated. For each Form 1098 you receive, make a note on the form to explain what the loan is for to ensure a proper deduction.

he Friends of the Riverdale Public Library are busy preparing for their nineteenth annual book sale.

Through the sale, memberships and other fundraising activities, the Friends of the Library have donated over $87,000 to the library since their inception to fund special programs, events, and collections.

This year’s book sale will be held Friday, March 27- Sunday, March 29. Booksellers

and reading enthusiasts will find nearly 9,000 books and audio books to choose from, all well below retail costs.

Dennis Harsley, President of the Friends of the Riverdale Public Library, said they raised $7,000 last year and always hope to exceed the previous year’s sales.

The Friends use this money to support programs that the normal budget would not allow. This includes the summer reading programs, music and craft performances, and science activities for children, adult programs like the outdoor Shakespeare at Glenburn program, and museum passes.

The Friends have paid for large print books, audiobooks and have funded many of the library’s data bases.

Anders also added that the Friends are

extremely lucky to have a great relationship with the town. «We started our sale at the library and it grew so big that we had to have it in the community courtroom. Now, bigger than ever, it remains in Riverdale’s beautiful Community Center. Our DPW brings our books over to the center, and the school loans us extra tables. It is all team work!”

Project Help’s Art Poster Contest Deadline Extended

‘Watershed U’ Offered to High School Students June 22-26

igh school students considering majoring in environmental science, conservation or environmental education in college are invited to “Watershed University,” a new program offered this summer by Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA), the region’s watershed watchdog.

The one-week certificate program will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, at the Fairview Farm Wildlife Preserve, 2121 Larger Cross Road, Bedminster.

The program is designed for students entering grades 9-12 who want to gain insights in the environmental field, learn how to make impactful change and serve their communities. Each day includes a speaker, hands-on scientific exploration, and team building.

“Participants will learn from experts, examining environmental and social topics that affect local and global natural resource challenges,” said Lauren Theis, education director for Raritan Headwaters. “On-theground conservation projects will allow students to gain skills in scientific research, communication, and building connections

within a group.”

Watershed University topics include: Watershed conservation Creating habitat for native wildlife Native plant identification Pond and stream study Climate issues Environmental justice GIS mapping Environmental policies Students will have the option to participate in additional experiences, such as organic gardening, visual art projects, kayaking, hiking and yoga. Students will also connect with RHA staff and partners to explore opportunities for advanced learning, community service, citizen science projects and internships.

The cost of the program is $200, which includes certificate of participation and a Raritan Headwaters hat and t-shirt. Needbased scholarships are available.

hat? It’s March?? How can that be? Wasn’t it just Thanksgiving???

That’s the feedback Project Help has gotten from art teachers across the state. Many teachers and art students want to participate in the organization’s annual Art Poster Contest, but time got away from them over the holiday season.

We don’t want to leave anyone out, so the deadline for the contest has been pushed forward to March 20.

Here’s what you need to know...

In 2019 the veteran’s aid group successfully launched its mobile closet, a repurposed school bus that brings clothing and other necessities to retired military individuals and families statewide.

Based on that milestone event Project Help has chosen its theme for the Third Annual Poster Contest. Art students are being asked to focus their creativity on the Project Help bus and how it will benefit veterans in need of assistance.

Last year hundreds of school children from throughout New Jersey submitted their handiwork. This year thousands are expected to participate.

All students - kindergarten through high

school - are eligible to share their artistry and creativity. Art teachers already have the contest details in hand so all that is needed are some innovative ideas and the sky is the limit imagination!

Individual teachers can also reach out to Project Help to sign up and young artists can participate independently if their schools aren’t entering the contest.

All artwork will need to be submitted by the new deadline March 20. Entries will be judged on design, originality and content.

Prizes will be awarded in four grade level groups.

The winners and their families will be invited to a dinner award ceremony.

Winning entries will be displayed on social media, the Project Help website and at events to support the mission of serving our veterans.

For Some People, Every Day is a Day to Celebrate the Irish

By Elsie Walker any people will say that St. Patrick’s Day is the day when everyone is Irish. Green is seen all around and the focus is on all things Irish. For the Irish American Association of North West Jersey (IAANWJ), the focus every day is on all things Irish. Located in Rockaway on Richard Mine Road, the association’s mission is “to preserve the Irish culture and to create an awareness of the contributions the Irish have made, and continue to make, in building America,” said Jack Regan. A first generation American, Regan has been a member of the IAANWJ for over 20 years, a past president of it and currently is the Sergeant of Arms on its executive board. Recently, Regan, of West Milford, talked about the IAANWJ’s history, some of its events, and ways it preserves and passes on the Irish culture. Also, he shared that you don’t have to be Irish to join the association or to enjoy what it has to offer, which includes the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Morristown which is being held on March 14th.

“I love the club,” said Regan of the association.

The IAANWJ started in 1974 when a group of people of Irish heritage came together and realized how much they had in common and that they wanted to share and preserve their Irish heritage. They met elsewhere

before buying a building for their clubhouse in 1977. Besides the events and classes it holds on site, the association is involved in two big events off-site, one right around the corner: the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Morristown.

Regan shared that in 1979, the club members decided to have a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Wharton. They continued to have it, but as years went on, it became so popular that it had to move to a bigger venue.

In 1990, the IAANWJ got together with the Friendly Sons, who became co-sponsors of the parade, and Morristown was selected as the venue.

This year’s parade will be held on March 14th. (Preceding the parade, there will be a mass at The Church of The Assumption in Morristown.) The parade will begin at noon, with its starting point being the town hall.

Longtime IAANWJ member, Mary Waller, of Sparta, will be the Grand Marshall.

Another popular yearly event held by the association is a feis/festival the second Sunday in September. It starts with a mass.

Then, there are competitions in Irish step dance and music. There are Irish language demonstrations and examples of Irish art.

Entertainment is provided by an Irish Band.

The association also has other events, which are held at its clubhouse. Among them are a Celli (dance) the fourth Sunday

of the month at 3pm. There is also a barbeque Celli held during the summer. A traditional Irish music session (with music played by all ages) is held monthly on Saturdays at 8 pm. The second Saturday in December is the annual Christmastime Holley. People come together and share their talents, cheer on each other and have a good time.

The clubhouse is also the site of a monthly Irish book club. Recent books include Bridget of Kildare and The Brendan Voyage. The latter tells how the Irish discovered America.

(Brendan landed in Newfoundland, North America).

A Celtic knitting group meets once a month for all skill levels. They work on different stitches. A popular item made is baby blankets with a Celtic design in them.

In addition, the clubhouse is the site of a variety of classes in Irish culture. You don’t have to be a member to take them. Step dancing is taught for children. and adults can learn Irish set and Celli dancing. Celtic art workshops are led by the association’s resident artist, Patrick Gallagher. Students work on Celtic designs and use a variety of mediums, including clay and metal. There are mu-

sic classes in Irish fiddle, the concertina, and the penny whistle (tin whistle).

The club also tries to keep the Irish language alive by having clubhouse signs in the language and using it during meetings, “so it is not lost,” said Regan.

Regan shared that some benefits he’s found of the IAANWJ are that people get to know more about and appreciate their Irish heritage; there’s also the friendship of members, and the active lifestyle it creates. It also gives a person a chance to express his/her Irish heritage.

However, Regan stressed that you don’t have to be Irish to join.

Yearly Membership fees are $25 for an individual, $15 for an individual over 65, $30 for a married couple, and $25 for a married couple over 65.

When asked to say a parting word, Regan said, “Beannachtai na Feile Padraig, agat!”

That means “blessings of the Feast Of St Patrick to you!”

A Plant-Based, Dairy-Inspired Dish

Vegetarian Stuffed Peppers 6 large sweet bell peppers 1/2 cup diced sweet onion

1 cup cherry tomatoes, sliced in half 1 cup frozen corn, thawed 1 1/2 cups cooked black beans plain (drained and rinsed if using canned beans) 2 cups cooked brown rice 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1 1/2 cups shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese, divided Preheat the oven to 350º F. Line a rimmed half sheet pan with non-stick aluminum foil.

Slice the tops off of the sweet bell peppers. Use a spoon to scoop the seeds and white membranes from the insides of the peppers. Discard the pepper tops and seeds. Place the peppers onto the prepared half sheet pan; briefly set aside.

In a large bowl, stir together the diced onion, cherry tomatoes, corn, black beans, and brown rice until combined.

Sprinkle the chili powder, oregano, salt, and pepper over top before stirring to distribute the seasonings throughout.

Fold 1 cup of the Cheddar cheese into the filling, reserving the remaining cheese for later.

oney management and building long-term financial health is a careful balancing act between longand short-term financial needs, and now is a perfect opportunity to re-examine your goals. Last year, the firm launched its Emergency Savings Initiative, a program designed to help people living on low incomes gain access to, and increase usage of, savings strategies and tools to help establish important safety nets.

As with any financial matter, there’s no one “right” way to save. Individual circumstances require a customized approach to determine the best method to fit needs. In addition to traditional saving methods, Common Cents Lab, Commonwealth and the Financial Health Network are working with financial institutions and other enterprises on an initiative to create new and experimental programs that address the challenges many

consumers face when it comes to saving money.

Automated Savings Often offered as an option through employer payroll, this approach allows you to designate a portion of your paycheck to be deposited in a savings account. Whether you choose to make it a flat amount or percentage of your income, it’s an easy method that allows you to consistently funnel money into savings with a one-time setup process.

Round Up Some financial institutions offer programs in which every transaction you make on your account, or perhaps just those made using your debit card, are rounded up to the nearest whole dollar. I Remember Dad: God and Country

By Richard Mabey Jr. ome of the most endearing memories of my Dad are of the times when he served as a Sexton at the Boonton United Methodist Church. Dad loved his church. He dedicated over a decade of his life to cleaning and maintaining his beloved church.

Dad began serving as the Church Sexton in the Summer of 1981. At the time, Dad was still working as a long distance truck driver. Generally speaking, on Wednesday evenings after supper, Dad would climb into his little Ford Ranger pickup truck and drive off to the church to clean it. I often went with Dad. I really don’t know how my father did it all. When he started working as a Sexton he was 53 years old. I would often see the fatigue in Dad’s eyes as he drove down Route 202, on his way to the church.

Dad would put in two to three hours of cleaning time on Wednesday nights. Then on Saturday mornings, he would get up early and eat breakfast. I often got up early on Saturday mornings, to help him clean the church. Right after breakfast we would make sandwiches. Then, throw in a couple of apples with a few oatmeal cookies in little brown bags. We would make tea and

coffee at the church, for our lunch break.

When we got to the church, Dad and I would start vacuuming and scrubbing. I was always amazed at how hard my Dad worked. Dad was an incredibly hard working man. He truly loved his church. Dad did get paid for being the Church Sexton. I don’t think he reported to the Minister, even half of the hours he worked. It was Dad’s way of giving of himself to the Lord.

Dad retired as a long distance truck driver in June of 1989. To my amazement, Dad then devoted even more time to the cleaning and the upkeep of his church. Thus, donating a lot more hours of labor to the church.

Dad served as Sexton of the Boonton United Methodist Church till the Summer of 1992. His bout with prostate cancer, made it nearly impossible for him to carry on his duties as Church Sexton.

In the Spring of 1987, Reverend Leon Weaver presented Dad with the well earned God and Country Award. This is an award given by both the United Methodist Church and the Boy Scouts of America. Dad served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 170 for over 25 years. Dad truly earned this prestigious award.

near and dear to my heart. I truly cherish them. Dad loved the Lord, he loved his family and he loved people. He had an uncanny belief in young people. Dad

firmly believed that it was better to teach a boy morals than to rehabilitate a wayward man. I loved my father very much.

Bloomingdale Councilwoman Dawn Hudson Sworn in for Third Term, Councilman Drew Juhlin for His First

By Steve Sears orough of Bloomingdale Democratic Councilwoman, Dawn Hudson, recently was sworn in for her third term, and Drew Juhlin, a Republican, is now first time Councilman.

“I ran for council and won in 2013, being sworn in in 2014,” Hudson says. “I’m incredibly honored that the residents feel confident in their support of me and appreciate everyone that took time to get out and vote.”

Juhlin’s run for council was his first. He has lived in Bloomingdale since February 2001. “I started out on several different committees in town, (Recreation Committee, ROSE FUND, Baseball Coach and TriBoro Baseball Board Member) and I found it to be extremely gratifying to serve my community. I’m a firm believer in being an active member of our community and to contribute at a higher level. The other motivating factor lies within our two boys, Quinn and Cooper. My wife (of 19 years) Kim also serves in Bloomingdale, and our hope is that one day they, too, will become leaders and active contributors in their communities through our examples.”

Hudson did not grow up in Bloomingdale. “As a child, my parents moved quite a bit,” she recalls, “so I never really had a place to call home. Through all that moving, the one thing I always told my parents was that I always wanted to settle down in a small town, so that when I walked into the bank they knew me and I knew them, you know your neighbors, not just live next to them.” Hudson in 1998 met her husband (who grew up in Bloomingdale) through a fire department training program, and they bought a house in 1999 in town. “The beginnings of a hometown for me started there. The first organization I joined was the Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Little by little I started getting more involved in the town and started regularly attending council meetings. In the beginning of 2013 is when I decided to run for council.”

Hudson and her family are very active in town. She and her husband Mike have two children. “Cole is 16 and Bella is 13. Both kids have gone through the Bloomingdale School system; my daughter will be graduating from Walter T. Bergen this year. We’re true sports parents as both the kids are heavily involved in sports.”

Hudson says the council that she’s had the pleasure of serving with for the last six years is incredible. “There is no ‘I’ - it’s an ‘us.’ I’m lucky to have served with such a great

group of men, and each bringing their own special expertise.” Stabilizing municipal taxes is an achievement she and the council are proud of. “We’ve reduced our debt and operational costs. We’ve worked hard on community improvement projects and have received over 1.8 million in grants to help us achieve those improvements, projects such as street improvements, field upgrades, walking track - the list goes on. We still have work to do. We need to continue to entice businesses to make Bloomingdale their home base.

We want to continue community improvements. We need to realize our affordable housing obligation which will generate millions in new taxes and fees.”

Juhlin feels strongly, via a community that is comprised of devoted, thoughtful and compassionate people, that Bloomingdale has a bright future. “I’m proud of our community and I envision Bloomingdale to continue to attract new businesses and restaurants that will impact our

downtown in a positive and measurable way. As you drive throughout our community, you’ll clearly see that our residents take great pride in their property. Through thoughtful and forward thinking, I feel that we can continue to offer opportunities for families to move into Bloomingdale and invest in our community.”

He continues. “Being sworn in by New Jersey State Senator Kristin Corrado, in a council chamber packed with family and close friends, exceeded all of my expectations,” says Juhlin happily. “I am grateful that the great residents of Bloomingdale have put their faith in me to serve on our council. My goal is to help move our community forward in the years to come.“ Hudson sums it up definitively. “I’ve found a home in Bloomingdale. I want for everyone what I have: a place people are proud to call their home.”

The Role of Technology in Agriculture

odern industry is driven by technology.

Advancements in technology have changed how business is conducted, with some industries undergoing dramatic changes since the dawn of the 21st century.

While agriculture might not be the first industry people think of when reflecting on the changing nature of industry, The National Institute of Food and Agriculture notes that modern farms are vastly different than those from a few decades ago.

Farmers have long relied on technology to make their operations as efficient, productive and profitable as possible.

Precision agriculture, which refers to technological advances designed to propel agriculture into the modern, computer-

ized and information-based world, is helping the agricultural sector become more profitable and efficient while also improving safety and making agriculture more eco-friendly. In addition, the NIFA notes that the modern agricultural industry employs technology such as robots, temperature and moisture sensors, aerial images, and global positioning systems.

If it sounds complicated, that’s because it is. For example, modern sensors can detect soil conditions, potentially producing hundreds of readings per second. These sensors help farmers know the best possible time to plant seeds so they can reach their full potential. That improves both the efficiency of modern farms as well as their output.

The NIFA also notes that agricultural technology has re-

duced waste. For instance, thanks to agricultural technology, farmers no longer have to apply water, fertilizers and pesticides uniformly across entire fields. Technology has shown that farmers can simply target specific areas or even treat individual plants differently. That saves time and allows farmers to use only minimal quantities of water, fertilizer and pesticides. In addition, according to the NIFA, employing agricultural technology in this fashion leads to higher crop productivity and reduces runoff of chemicals into rivers and groundwater, thereby reducing the farm’s impact on local ecosystems.

Modern farms are technological marvels where various technologies are being employed to produce crops more efficiently and safely than ever before.

Navigating Hope Completes 100th Stop Brings Mobile Social Services Across Morris County

orris County’s Navigating Hope mobile social services team recently completed their 100th stop as part of unique program launched by the Board of Freeholders in 2019, and which has crisscrossed Morris County on wheels for the past eight months to help residents in need of assistance.

Many times working in tandem with Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon’s Hope One mobile addictions services, Navigating Hope seeks out clients who cannot get to county social services offices in Morris Township and Dover due to transportation, family or physical issues, among others.

The mobile program visit supermarkets, libraries, churches, train stations, soup kitchens, shopping malls, and many other locations to reach county residents in need of assistance.

The Board of Freeholders were briefed on the team’s first year on the road, which began with a June 6, 2019 stop at the Dover Free Produce Market at the Salvation Army and made its 100th stop outside of landlord-tenant court which is held in the Morris County Courthouse in Morristown.

“I am so proud of this team. Having been out in the field a number of time with them, watching them interact with our residents, it is heartwarming to see

what they are doing,’’ said Freeholder Kathy DeFillippo.

“There are people who just can’t get out in our county and don’t have the wherewithal to navigate the social services process on their own.’’

“Morris County is the accessible county,’’ added Freeholder Director Deborah Smith. “If you can’t get to us, we’ll get to you. I think that’s the whole point behind Navigating Hope.’’

Navigating Hope team members, including coordinator Christopher Linne, Rewaida Muheisen of the county Office of Temporary Assistance, and Ashley Reed of Family Promise of Morris County, made a presentation to the freeholders at their county government work session in Morristown.

Linne explained that the mobile operation has visited 31 of the county’s 39 municipalities, with Victory Gardens to be number 32 in March. Due to need, they have visited some locations multiple times, especially when they have found a community in need.

They have partnered with numerous organizations in the county, including the countywide library network, Legal Services of Northwest Jersey, Homeless Solutions, senior housing complexes, soup kitchens, and religious institutions, among others, to expand the reach of Navigating Hope.

Love is in the Air: Pequannock Historical Society Plans Historical Wedding

By Dawn M. Chiossi ove is in the air; The Pequannock Township Historical Society is planning a wedding, and everyone is invited. On April 25th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., they are planning a historical wedding reenactment and a special celebration in honor of Martin Berry’s 300th Wedding Anniversary to Maria Roome.

The Pequannock Township Historical Society was founded on May 7, 2014, when several dedicated and passionate individuals sought to protect and preserve the rich history of Pequannock Township.

Martin Berry was the son of the first family to settle in Pompton Plains. The wedding reenactment promises to be something right out

of Colonial America, as the couple were originally married in 1720.

Filled with a sense of romance and intrigue, people often imagine what a historical wedding might look like: The costumes, food, music, goings-on, it’s fun to spin such a dream.

For these devoted volunteers of the historical society, they are doing much more than imagining. For them, the fun is in the planning.

At a recent meeting, members let their minds whirl with ideas and concepts for the big day, and everyone is invited to step back in time and attend.

According to the historical society, the driving force behind this idea of a wedding reenactment and celebration was member, Carl Williams. But Williams

is quick to say that the idea was very much a team effort.

Although Williams makes it clear that none of the details are final yet, and there are many loose ends that they must tie-up before the event takes place (such as the wedding location), they are elated over the whole brainstorm.

“Since it’s Martin Berry and Maria Roome’s 300th anniversary, we wanted to give a reasonable approximation of what the wedding would look like,” Williams says. “We thought it was a good idea to have a party,” he jokes.

They knew from the calendar that the couple was married on April 25th. Members pointed to the date of 1720 because that was when the Martin Berry House was

completed. “Martin and Maria had to have somewhere to live as a married couple,” Williams says simply.

When asked what the weddings were like for a man of Martin Berry’s station and stature in 1720, Williams is enthusiastic. “Weddings in Colonial America were very different than what we are used to seeing,” Williams explains. “For one thing, the wedding ceremony itself was a quiet affair and very small.

There would have been approximately seven people altogether: “Martin and Maria, the minister, Maria’s mother and father, and Martin’s mother and stepfather.” Williams mentions that the wedding itself would have taken place, not in a church, but in the parlor of the Roome’s home. “Afterward, they would move out to the yard or large space outside where guests could come for the reception.”

“In Colonial Times women would not wear what we think of as wedding dresses,” Williams states. “The wedding dress as people know it did not exist at that time.

Couples would wear what they considered to be their best clothes. It wouldn’t be too far off from what we think of as Revolutionary attire. Women would wear dresses with bodices and lots of layers, men would wear waistcoats, below the knee britches, and stockings. The clothing would be made of linen or wool at this time.”

Since the historical society knew that Pequannock Township was a rural area, the foods at Berry’s wedding would have reflected that.

“There would certainly be a variety of meats, roast pork (and this is what the society is thinking of for the reenactment), roast beef, some kind of fowl (chicken, duck or goose), there might have been potatoes, preserves,

and certainly spring vegetables,” Williams explains.

“What they considered to be dessert; we would think of it as more savory than sweet.

Sugar was very expensive and from the Caribbean, so desserts would have been sweetened with fruits or dried fruits. There would be a cake, but there would be no frosting. It would be much more like a pound cake or fruit cake. Also, the cake portions were much smaller, which we would consider pastry sized.”

Beverages served were also different. Drinks would have been punches for the guests, there would have been cider, rum or beer. Like every Dutch community, the Berry’s brewed their own beer.

Although plans are barely underway, members of the Pequannock Township Historical Society are already excited for their own wedding reenactment and ceremony.

They have lined up pe-

riod music to enhance the day. Talented vocalists and musicians Ridley and Anne Enslow will be singing, playing the violin, mandolin and hammered dulcimer. This is the type of music that might have been played in the parlors of George Washington or Thomas Jefferson.

Williams says that society hopes to have early colonial dancing to go along with the music.

Additionally, history will come alive at the wedding reenactment. Each “character” from Martin Berry to Maria Roome, to their respective parents, and even the minister, will stand up and tell the wedding guests about themselves and their lives.

“Some of the details of the characters will even surprise and intrigue you,” Williams promises.

Four (Tempting) Behaviors to Avoid When Saving for Retirement and the Secret to Real Retirement Savings Success

Provided by David M Rose o err is human, but you can sidestep some of the most common mistakes people make in saving for retirement by avoiding these four oh-so-tempting behaviors.

Retirement savings mistake #1: procrastinating Even though you know you will get older and eventually retire, a little part of you still believes you might not. Nobel Prize-winning economist Richard Thaler, the founding father of behavioral economics, has spent much of his career exploring why so many Americans have difficulty saving for retirement. One thing he found is that people would rather enjoy what their money can do for them today rather than in the future. 1 Retirement savings mistake #2: being too loss averse We don’t like to lose money, so the notion of less money in our paycheck today to serve our needs in the future is a tough pill to swallow. The problem with loss aversion is that we keep delaying that uncomfortable feeling of a smaller paycheck. If you delay too much, you lose out on the compounding effect. For example, if you decide to save $5,000 a year beginning at the age of 35, by the time you’re 65—assuming a 4.5% rate of return—you’ll have 43% less savings than if you had started saving at age 25. That adds up to $240,000.1 Retirement savings mistake #3: not practicing discipline When deciding how to invest, too often investors try to time the market rather than follow a disciplined investment approach. Trying to get in the market “at the right time” sounds smart, but in reality, it often leads to inaction, because that right moment never seems to come. The idea of timing the market only reinforces the first two mistakes (procrastination and being too loss averse). Here’s an example of a disciplined savings strategy: You could start by putting $5,000 away, and then add 5% each year. It might sound boring, but in the end, it will add up to much more than a “timed” strategy that never quite launches.

Retirement savings mistake #4: tinkering with your portfolio too much You want to take a more active role in your investments? That’s good, except if

you have a tendency to overmanage. This often happens with retirees, who find themselves with more free time than ever before, and take a keen interest in chasing performance. In the research paper, “Trading is hazardous to your wealth,” authors Brad Barber and Terrance Odean found that, on average, households turned over 75% of their equity portfolios annually and underperformed by 1.5% each year.2 The biggest cause of this is mistiming when to buy and sell a particular fund. People are often driven by the desire to own more of that “hot” stock in rising markets when others are buying, or by “fear” in falling markets when others are selling. In a diversified portfolio, you’ll always be tempted to adjust the portfolio exposure in favor of the best-performing asset classes. The problem is, acting on that temptation may be costing you.

So what’s the trick to saving for retirement? Actually, there is none. Start saving for retirement today, and stick with it. No gimmicks, no magic timing and no schemes that will “pay off big.” Just old-fashioned discipline.

For Two Professors, It’s About Mentoring, Friendship, a 60-Million-Year-Old Fossil, and Educating

By Steve Sears or William Paterson University Environmental Science professors, Martin Becker and Harry Maisch, there are many similarities.

Both attended Rutgers University with a deep interest in Paleontology. And, when Maisch was a student at the state institution, Becker’s work and study so impressed him that he emailed the latter, which resulted in a return email and invitation to visit.

The 53-year-old Becker then recommended his master’s degree course he had studied to the 30-year-old Maisch.

The Morristown resident took the course, graduated, and in 2017 became an adjunct professor - right beside Becker.

Then there was one of many trips the two have taken, including one in 2018 to Arkansas, where Maisch unearthed a rare, 60 million-year-old stingray fossil.

What did he name it? Hypolophites beckeri.

Yes, he named it after his mentor. Quite the tribute.

Becker, who lives in Wayne, sees in Maisch a lot of himself when he was his age. “A lot of potential for a future in the types of things that have made me interested in everything (fossils and rocks) you see in this room,” he says while looking around his lab.

In 2011, Maisch was a senior at Rutgers Newark, completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and Environmental Science. Becker recalls receiving his email.

“Basically, I told Harry that this all sounds interesting, why don’t you stop by, show me what you’ve found, and tell me what you’ve been up to. Much to my surprise, he said, ‘Sure, I’ll be there.’ And then the knock came on the door,” says Becker, with a chuckle, “and here shows up this guy and he had all types of Riker mounts and kits of fossil shark teeth and fish teeth he had collected from all over New Jersey – primarily in some of my older field areas, one of the most premier places in New Jersey to collect fossil shark and fish teeth in Marlboro.

It’s a place called Big Brook.”

While at Rutgers himself, Becker often was in the field three times per week; sometimes solo, sometimes with a group.

He saw in Maisch the same exploration ethic. “That’s kind of our launching point, I think” says Becker. “That rolled into Harry’s master’s degree at Brooklyn College

with the same advisor (I had), Dr. John Chamberlain.”

For Maisch, Rutgers was a great school, the professors top notch, but he found no true Paleontologists on the faculty. Enter Becker. “I was trying to find somebody with similar research interests that I had at the time, and in my senior year I had some free time, and I wanted to get more involved in the research aspect of things, so that’s when I reached out to Marty. It was great to make the connection.”

Maisch made his discovery in February of 2018. He brought his specimens back to the university and investigated, separating the fossil types. Among his find were a set of teeth, stingray molars, and he compared them to other findings in scientific writings and journals, and by the fall of 2018 thought he had something different.

First, he challenged himself, pondering all he had discovered and written about prior, and then he visited collections in museums and did comparative study. After that, he compiled a manuscript for publication in the peer-reviewed Journal of Paleontology. Three experts concurred that the find was rare and new to science.

Becker explains how it’s possible a sea life fossil was now found in a current grassland. “What happens in the lake crustacea, in the age of the dinosaurs, is the Atlantic coastal plain, from New Jersey and all the way down across Georgia, and then west to Arkansas, was inundated by sea level rise.” Becker himself had covered many states in the area and discovered a missing datapoint in Arkansas. The area they investigated, now a grassland, 60 million years ago was most likely under water – therefore the found fossil, a true gem, beneath gravel and dirt. “We liken ourselves to the ‘Raiders of the Lost Shark,’” he says with a laugh.

Two students took part in the trip, Clint Mautz and Christi Kline, both students coming to the experience of fieldwork with Maisch and Becker through a General Geology course. Student involvement, perhaps the most important element of any exploration for an educator, is a key thing to Becker. He encourages forgetting about current topography, and instead trying to think of the area as it was 90 million years ago when an ocean moved through that portion of the United States. “It’s getting the first bite of the apple,” says Becker.

“It’s life changing, in my opinion.”

“The fieldwork trip to Arkansas was a great hands-on learning experience as an undergraduate student,” says Mautz, a May 2019 grad with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sustainability. “We got to see, up close, the concepts we learned about in the classroom. Dr. Maisch was a great teacher and mentor on the trip. He trained us on what to look for before we went out to the site and helped us understand what we were finding. Once we discovered the fossil layer exposed in an area disturbed by highway construction, we became very excited.”

For Kline, who grew up in Arkansas and graduated in January 2019 as an English major, time spent with Becker and Maisch has altered her career path and served to ignite a passion for geology and paleontology. “What a surprise it was to learn that millions of years ago this area was home to sea creatures,” she says of her home state.

“It was an incredible experience to return to my birthplace with Dr. Maisch to collect specimens from this location. Who knew it would result in such an exciting find?” She now refers to Becker as “Dr. Beckeri.”

“The chances of finding a new species is really, really slim,” says Maisch, enlarging and viewing the stingray molars under

a microscopic lens while speaking. And his naming the fossil after Becker? “He’s been very supportive, very influential for my education, my graduate school education, and my current career as an adjunct professor. He’s been a mentor.”

The fossils can be seen this spring at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.
