“After the attacks, people spontaneously came to Eagle Rock Reservation to view the tragedy unfold at the Twin Towers and leave cards, letters, photos and flowers in an impromptu memorial in honor of their loved ones,” says Essex County Executive, Joseph DiVincenzo, Jr. “I knew immediately that this was the natural location for a memorial because of the public attraction to this site and the unparalleled view of the World Trade Center from the lookout area. Our September 11th Memorial is a special place for people to come for solace and comfort because of its unique location and its powerful message of peace and hope.” The Essex County September 11th Eagle Rock Memorial is located in Essex County Eagle Rock Reservation off of Eagle Rock Avenue in West Orange.

On Sunday, October 20, 2002, the Essex County September 11th Eagle Rock Memorial was dedicated and unveiled. Added in 2009 was the Flight Crew Memorial, a tribute to the pilots and flight attendants on the four airplanes that crashed that day, and in 2011, a 7,400-pound steel and concrete artifact from the World Trade Center site and a bronze plaque recognizing the heroism of EMS personnel was added. In 2016, the Essex County Search and Rescue Dog Statue was then dedicated at the site to commemorate the role that dogs had in the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center and Pentagon after the attacks.

HEART CONDITIONS

Many symptoms accompanying diabetes actually show up in the mouth. Periodontal disease, bleed ing gums, loose-feeling teeth, and other subtle signs point to the pos sibility of diabetes. Your dentist may recommend you see your doctor, and if you’ve already been diag nosed, these symptoms show that your blood sugar isn’t under control.

Dementia typically occurs gradually, making it tough for family and friends to notice the signs in a loved one. One of the noticeable side effects is poor oral hygiene, which leads to plaque buildup and gingivitis.

OSTEOPOROSIS

Gum disease has a potential link to heart disease, so irritated or infected gums (paired with other other heart disease risk factors) suggest that you should see a cardiologist.

Loss of bone tissue can lead to brittle ness and changes to the jaw bones, which might show as receding gums or loose teeth.

If you or a loved one has struggled with an eating disorder, you know how difficult it can be to seek out the care you need. Enamel erodes when exposed to stomach acids or as a result of poor nutrition, and your den tist can help you address this and find a way forward.

DEMENTIA

HEARTBURN

While heatburn is usually noticeable to the patient, nighttime acid reflux is tougher to diagnose because it occurs during sleep. Your dentist will notice erosion of enamel on the upper back morals and consider whether nighttime heartburn might be the cause.

by Elsie Walker

Ruiz de Porras (also known as “Pastor Iraida”) was born and raised in New York. When she was 14, her grandmother took her to Puerto Rico, and they visited a Pentecostal Church. There Ruiz de Porras was asked to sing. At first, she didn’t feel she could,

Later, the family moved to Puerto Rico. There was no Methodist Church where they lived, so they attended a Presbyterian one.

On youth day, the youth took on the different roles in delivering a worship service. Ruiz de Porras was asked to preach. She was 19 at the time and gave the message, “The Armor of God”. She remembers, “I felt very comfortable at the pulpit.” Later, a Methodist church was started in their area, and they worshipped there.

There were struggles for the family in Puerto Rico. Her mother, who had worked on Wall Street, was over-qualified for every

job. Still, they got by (and things got better later). Ruiz de Porras went to college and studied business. Then, she got into business administration and even co-owned a business. However, she felt empty. “I had no passion for it,” she recalled. Then came the prediction at her mother’s church plus another experience which cemented her path.

she lived in Puerto Rico, Rev. Dr. Iraida Ruiz de Porras, CSD (Certified Spiritual Director) recalls being asked to come one Sunday to the Methodist church her mother attended. Her mother was to be liturgist, read the scripture that day, and wanted her daughter’s moral support. After the service, members of the congregation greeted Ruiz de Porras. One noted the way she carried herself and predicted, much to her surprise, that Ruiz de Porras would be a pastor one day. That prediction came true. Ruiz de Porras has served a church in Puerto Rico plus ones in Hasbrouck Heights, Paterson, and Lakewood, New Jersey. This July, she became the new pastor of Butler United Methodist Church at 5 Bartholdi Avenue, Butler. Recently, Ruiz de Porras reflected on her path to the ministry and what she brings to the Butler church.

Reflecting on coming to the Butler United Methodist Church, Ruiz de Porras is thrilled at all the church offers as outreach to the community: Noah’s Ark Day Care, Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry, Gleaners Thrift Store, Zumba classes, Red Bird Mission, and ballroom dance lessons. Also, the church is a place where AA, NA, Al-A teen, and Al-Anon meet during the week. Ruiz de Porras noted that she wants everyone to feel welcomed at the church and feel part of its community.

When asked what she likes most about the ministry, Ruiz de Porras said, “I really like to see God’s grace in me and the people I serve.” She added that she feels her strength is being very empathetic and being a good listener. She shared, “I like to listen to people. I like to place myself in the middle of their stories and feel what they feel.” She added that she likes to help people to see the gifts God’s given them. Also, social justice issues are important to her. She wants to be present for those hurting and feeling rejected as she’s been through such things herself.Hermost memorable ministry experiences have been working with the children in the church in Puerto Rico and working with a church in New Jersey during the pandemic. The latter’s congregation was made up of people who commuted to church; Ruiz de Porras was the bridge to the local community. She lived there and knew what it needed. Ruiz de Porras is married and between them, she and her husband have three children. There is also her dog, Sally. Sally is a six-year-old bichon-shih tzu mix who likes to accompany the pastor to the church office and to get the church mail. The pastor enjoys golf, bowling and crafting. She enjoys making things for the children’s sermon that the children can take with them to remind them of the lesson. Also, she loves contemplative photography, seeing God’s presence in the captured moments.

According to the IRS, it means that the records used to support a claim on your tax return are created and originated at the same time as your claimed deduction. In other words, if you realize that you forgot to get a receipt for something, you are out of luck if you try to get one at a later date. Not fair!

Perhaps you know you had the expense, but you simply forgot to get a receipt. You can cry foul, but time and again the IRS has had tax courts uphold their elimination of a taxpayer’s deduction for lack of contem poraneous documentation. Here are some areas where the term contemporaneous is especially important:

Charitable contributions

Contemporaneous defined

The donation of vehicles, boats and planes is often the most cited area where lack of contemporaneous documentation is a problem because these types of dona tions have a high estimated market value that changes from month to month. But timely, written acknowledgement from the charitable organization is also required for any donation of $250 or more.

What you need to know

Keep a log. Many transactions require the correct documentation at the time the activity occurs. This is true with deductible mileage, gambling loses and tip income. So keep a log of your activities as they occur.

Wait to file. To meet the IRS definition of contemporaneous, the receipt or acknowl edgement must be received the earlier of either when you file your tax return OR the due date (including extensions) of your tax return. This is particularly true with chari table contributions. So if you want to play it safe, do not file until all documentation is in hand.

f you have problems getting to sleep at night and you turn to the IRS tax code for help, you might find some vocabulary that is very foreign to you. One of the more uncommon words used by the IRS is the term “contemporaneous.” So what does it mean and why should you care?

Understanding Tax Terms: Contemporaneous Records Everyone Needs to Know What This Means!

Always get a receipt. Before you leave a donated item, always ask for a receipt. In

the case of a vehicle, make sure the char itable organization gives you a 1098-C that is fully filled out. In addition, make sure the organization uses your vehicle or is a qual ified charitable group that allows you to take the full market value of your donation.

Think tax year. Understanding the defi nition of contemporaneous is important, because it is not always precisely defined. If the documentation is received in the same year as the donation or transaction, you are usually in good shape.

Unfortunately, since I was a child, I’ve suffered im mensely from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) which has taken its toll on both me and my family. There were a lot of things I wanted to accomplish in my life that got side tracked due to this illness which is all too prevalent.

Ever since I was a child, I wanted to be a writer. I’ve been writing for different publications in New Jersey, including this one for several years. However, my dream has always been to complete a book that adds something of value to the community.

That changed everything and, in my book, “Family Ill ness,” this beautiful story is told. My father passed away from Covid in 2020 and I never got the chance to present him with a copy. This book was intended to be my way of letting my Dad know he was my hero, and that I never would have survived without his love.

At this point, I have started under the tutelage of Liv ingston Author and Entrepreneur Barry Farber to place my books in non-traditional settings. For example, I am in the process of seeking partnerships with cafes and restau rants to place my book by the register rather than having it get lost in a bookstore surrounded by thousands of other books. At these locations, I will be providing signed copies of the book along with brochures and other information about mental health.

Newspaper Reporter Writes Moving Book on OCD

For me, the turning point came when as a young adult, my father confided in me that he had OCD and was still able to make a good life for himself. He also told me he would always love me and believed I could get better.

To give back more to the community, a portion of these sales will go towards mental health groups fighting stigma.

My father who taught at several universities through out New Jersey including Ramapo College and Saint Peters University grew up in a time when mental health was not discussed and was forced to live in silence for a great period of time. I believe our society has made significant progress, but we still have great strides to make.

By Evan Wechman

In the past, I have worked with a variety of families throughout New Jersey, forming and working with them in support groups. There is no magic pill, and this book is not going to solve all problems associated with the illness. However, I sincerely hope it lends a compassionate and compelling voice to the mental health community.

The love a family can provide to someone suffering from OCD or any mental illness can help immensely. This book is aimed primarily at those who are in pain, their families, and professionals serving this population as well.

og disabilities could be a result of illness, physical injury or accidents. Just because your dog is disabled, it should not stop you from enjoying its company. As a dog owner, it is your responsibility to help the dog live a normal life and cope with the situation. Below are a few tips to keep your dog happy and healthy, even with its disability. Assist their movements. Dogs who suffer from mobility problems, such as hip dysplasia, arthritis, spinal disorders, DM in dogs (degenerative myelopathy) or other medical problems that affects their hind legs will need plenty of help moving around. To make things easier for you and the dog, you can buy a special leash that supports its torso and back legs. There are also other tools that assist in mobility problems, such as dog wheelchairs that can be strapped to its back. If you are going to take the dog out to the vet, you will need to carry it into the car since it might have a hard time getting in. You can also use a small and improvised ramp that will help it walk into the car.

Watch their weight. Like humans, overweight dogs have a higher chance of getting sick compared to dogs that stay within their ideal weight. Exercise and a balanced diet are the only things you really need to worry about when it comes to your dog’s weight. Make sure it gets the right amount of exercise by taking it out for walks or jogs. You can also let it run around in an open area like your backyard, front lawn or park. Never overfeed or underfeed your dog. Use a good dog food mix or you can feed them meat that you prepared. Check with your vet about your dog’s ideal weight and the best type of diet you can give it. Regular visits to the doctor. Visiting the vet regularly helps you and your dog’s doctor track the dog’s condition and see if it’s improving or not. By going to the vet, you can detect any problems and stop them before they develop even further. The vet can also advise you on medical procedures and other remedies that can help or

The road to recovery from cancer may be filled with uncertainty. But cancer survivors should recognize that millions before them have survived the disease and gone on to live full, happy lives. A patient approach to recovery can help cancer survivors overcome any obstacles they may encounter along the way.

The

Follow-up care also is a vital part of recovering from cancer. The NCI notes that

cancer survivors typically return to the doctor every three to four months during the first two to three years after treatment. After that, survivors may see their doctors once or twice a year. Follow-up care is vital for cancer survivors, as it provides their doctors an opportunity to determine if patients are experiencing any side effects from treatment. These appointments also allow doctors to determine if the cancer has returned or spread to other parts of the body. In addition, follow-up visits provide an opportunity for cancer survivors to bring up any symptoms or questions they might have. Patients can ask about ways to reduce their risk of cancer recurrence and seek advice on getting back to normal, including how quickly they can begin exercising and how to approach new fitness regimens if they were inactive prior to diagnosis.

American Cancer Society reports that the five-year survival rate for all cancers combined that were diagnosed between 2009 and 2015 was 67 percent. That’s a noteworthy and encouraging statistic, though global figures compiled by Ourworldindata.org indicate that five-year survival rates following diagnosis are significantly lower in poorer countries. In addition, the road to recovery for cancer patients typically does not end when treatments are completed.

The National Cancer Institute notes that many cancer survivors have indicated that information and support was abundant during their treatment. However, once treatment stopped, a new wave of questions and uncertainty soon emerged. For example, the NCI points out that many cancer survivors recognize that life after treatment is less about “getting back to normal” than it is about discovering the new normal. In fact, the Memorial Sloan Ketting Cancer Center reports that most people indicate it takes between six and 12 months after they complete chemotherapy before they truly feel like themselves again.

The Road to Recovery Continues After Cancer Treatment Ends

Maier was a high school hockey star growing up in Pequannock and caught Manitoba’s attention while playing at Union College. Maier said he was concerned as a college player due to his slight build but spent lots of hours in the weight room to build more muscle.

According to Maier, “similar to every summer since I was in high school, it’s just about getting stronger and then obviously a step faster where you can as well so I’m in the

Maier is entering the second year of a two-year contract when the season begins again this fall. Despite his commitment to Manitoba, he does come back to Pequannock in the summers to see family and friends, when he is not practicing. “Northeast summers are beautiful so I’m always going to come home.”

By Evan Wechman

Though he remembers going to Devils games, his goal is to play in the NHL and his best shot of doing that is through the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets who are affiliated with the Manitoba Moose. Many former players on his team have been called up to play with the Winnipeg Jets, and Maier has not given up on his dream. However, he knows it takes constant work and preparation.

Now, as a professional player, he is still dedicated to preparation. Besides working one-on one with a professional skating coach in the United States during the off-season, he is still committed to bulking up in the gym.

gym four days a week.”

Though Maier admits he still loves New Jersey, he knows he must keep up the intensity in Manitoba to fulfill his dream of playing in the NHL. He is thankful for the topnotch treatment he has received in Canada. His team plays in the same major facility as their NHL affiliate, the Winnipeg Jets and he has no complaints.

as Pequannock native Cole Maier is getting closer to his dream of becoming a hockey player in the National Hockey League (NHL), the premier professional organization for the sport.Right now, Maier who is 27 years old plays hockey professionally for the Manitoba Moose in Winnipeg. He is paid a good salary, but nowhere near what the players make in the NHL. Maier, who grew up rooting for the New Jersey Devils, explained how the Manitoba team is part of the American Hockey League (AHL), just a step below the NHL.

Maier’s passion towards his craft has paid off as he was named the team’s Most Valuable Player this past season. He wasn’t expecting the award but said “it (the award) was a really good feeling. It made me think back to when I was trying to get to the AHL in the first place. And you see how big and fast people are and you wonder if you’re going to be able to make the adjustment, so the next step was just being a regular in the lineup. And then, after becoming more comfortable, you want to have more of an impact on the games. So, I think to be able to make that next step was huge for me, and I was definitely surprised but super honored to win that award.”

“Initially when I started this, it was going to be a ‘been there, done that’ kind of experience; taking my oldest daugh ter, who’s now 28, to experience what pov erty was, and to show our kids that not ev erybody’s privileged like we are, and just to give back,” Baran says. “I went the first year figuring I’m going to go because my sister and brother-in-law got me into it. I could never quite understand why they kept go ing back year after year. And then all of a sudden you get hooked.”

The normal number of people per Mis sion of Hope trip is 20 to 24, and Baran is

planning to have the latter number this year. “We cap that off because when we’re in their country, we don’t travel with our own transportation,” Baran says. “We take a local bus, so from the time we arrive at the airport, the bus meets us and they stay with us all week. They bring us back and forth where we stay to where we do our work.” And safety is top concern and prior ity, especially for this Mission of Hope trip, the first since the COVID-19 Pandemic. “We

“Of course, when you can put shoes on a child’s feet who is walking around in glass and rocks without shoes, that’s a pretty good feeling. But it goes beyond the ma terial possessions we bring them. I always like to say, ‘It’s not the ‘presents’ we bring, but our physical ‘presence.’ Just being there to show that someone cares, to walk down the street and to hold a child’s hand, and just to watch them smile back up at you. It is soForrewarding.’Baranand those who work with her on Mission of Hope, it’s a very busy life. “By the time that trip completes the first year, we’re already planning for the next year,” she says. “I get emails and text messages and Facebook posts all the time that say, ‘Are you still collecting donations?’ We col lect all year long. By the time we’re packed up for our current trip, we’ve already start ed gathering donations for our next trip. Once the word spreads and you have re peat people, we get drops of all kinds of do nations at the front door. It makes good use of what a lot of people would throw out. Just this morning I got bags of fabric, yarn, shoes, and all kinds of things. It’s amazing what we can put to good use.”

Mission of Hope is a ministry group that was formed at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church in Pompton Plains. Baran, Mission of Hope President for 14 years, took over leading the mission from her sister and brother-in-law, who moved to Colorado. “They wanted their work to continue, so I took it on and have taken it on ever since,” Baran says.

I did practice chiropractic for a few years, in a small town in West Virginia. But I was not very successful at it. I will write more about that, in a future article for this newspaper. Fate and destiny called me home to become a writer. It is strange how the angels will set a path for your life.

Mabey Jr. is a freelance writer. He can be reached at richardmabeyjr@hotmail.com. Please put on the subject line: September Story.

n June of 1973, at the age of 19, I graduated with an Associate of Arts degree from County College of Morris. It was a tough two years for me. But, it was also a very fulfilling time. I had been stretched like a rubber band. And, I came through it all a wiser and stronger individual.

I worked at a grocery store, during my years at Sherman College. Like my days at CCM, I found it all so tough, but also very rewarding.

All through my time at County College of Morris, I worked 29 hours a week at the A&P grocery store in Whippany. There were times when I worked the night shift, from 11:00 at night till 7:00 in the morning. I would punch out from work, climb up the stairs to the rest room, wash my face, wash up a bit and change my shirt. Then, I would buy a cinnamon bun at the A&P and drive off to CCM for an 8:00 class. I remember my class would end at 9:30. I didn’t have another class till 11:00, so I would go to the library, find an isolated corner, and put my face on my forearms on the desk and fall asleep. I kept a little travel alarm clock in my attaché case, that I also carried my books in.

If you’re facing a tough challenge, please do not give up. There were times, when I was in college, when I thought I wasn’t going to make it. Both at County College of Morris and at Sherman College of Chiropractic. But I did my absolute best to stay tough and be positive. Please, if you are going through a tough time to accomplish a goal that is important to you, do not give up! Never, ever give

up!Richard

I confess that I did not find chiropractic school easy. Specifically, I had a tough time with chemistry. In chiropractic college, a student is required to take one semester of inorganic chemistry, two semesters of organic chemistry, and two semesters of biochemistry. I did get some grades of B’s on my tests, but I mostly got C’s on many of my tests. However, a few times, I actually did ace some of my chemistry exams.

A September Story

That summer, I worked full time at the A&P. I saved

every penny that I could. And, as the dawn of September became closer, I prepared myself to depart from the old Mabey Homestead. To live away from loved ones and good friends. It was an emotional time, filled with a bit of sadness and yet also a time of hope for new adventures waiting to unfold.

During my time at CCM, I went to a local chiropractor to get my spine adjusted on a regular basis. My chiropractor encouraged me to go to chiropractic school, so I applied to Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, South Carolina. I was accepted and made plans to begin chiropractic college in September.

I took my studies very seriously and managed to make the Dean’s List, for all four semesters at CCM. I also wrote weekly columns and articles for Youngtown Edition, the official college newspaper of CCM. It was a tough time. But I enjoyed every minute of it.

Wallace split his time between playing goalie and defense, and as a Devils rooter, he especially admired goalie, Martin Brodeur, and captain and defenseman, Scott Stevens.

Jack Wallace (credit: Joe Kusumoto/USOPC)

Wallace originally grew up in both Franklin Lakes and Oakland, New Jersey. His mom and dad, John and Barbara, raised Jack and his two brothers, Matt and Mike, and one daughter, Colleen. “My mom actually went to Ramapo High School,” Wallace says, “and then me and all my siblings, we all went to Indian Hills. It’s a great part of the country to live in. I’ve gotten the opportunity to travel a lot. And you know, northern Jersey is a really, really unique spot, and I think it really set me up for success. Moving forward in my life, the education I got at Indian Hills got me into every college I applied for, and set me up for success at the college I eventually did go to, and that was the College of New Jersey.”

Like most kids, Wallace played a variety of sports growing up, but hockey became his favorite. “My older brother, he played hockey before I did. His idea of fun was to strap some pads on to me and throw me in a net in the driveway, so I would play goalie and he fired shots at me,” Wallace, a diehard New Jersey Devils fan, says with a laugh at the recollection. “I played organized ice hockey for a number of years, played roller hockey in my town, and I played street hockey with my friends. It’s just kind of a perfect mix between all the different sports, but it’s still super fast. It can be unbelievably brutal, very intense, but there’s still so much finesse and skill involved. I’m biased obviously, but I do think it’s one of the best sports out there to blend all the different assets that an athlete can use at their disposal.”

And recently, he finished 10th in the world representing the US National Para canoe spring kayak team at the world championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia. “I’m very happy about that,” he says.

that crazy style where he’ll make the save by any means necessary, no matter how he has to move his body. And then Scottie Stevens is just absolutely tough as nails. One of the best shutdown defensemen ever, and what a lot of people don’t talk about is how many points he had, and how often he actually scored. He was known for his really big hits and being super tough on guys and not letting anyone get through the middle, but he actually put up some pretty decent numbers for a defenseman in his day, as well as being

“I looked up to those guys a lot when I was a kid,” Wallace says. “It was more like players that I wanted to meet, and since then, I have had the pleasure and privilege to meet both of them. So that’s pretty fantastic. I think it’s just the mentality that they have. As far as Brodeur, he kind of has

Jack Wallace, it’s been two Winter Paralympic Games Team USA Sled Hockey gold medals in a row. His first was in 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, while the second was this past winter in Beijing, China, with a 5 - 0 whitewashing of Canada.

Wallace also proudly represented the United States in the 2019 Word Championships in Hungary – where he again won a gold medal - and this past winter when he and Team USA again topped the world at the Winter Paralympics. “Going into Beijing, we were training six hours a day for almost a year straight,” Wallace says. “It was a monumental step. It went exactly according to plan. We won the entire tournament by a margin of 30 goals, and I think one team scored one goal against us. We did our job before the tournament preparing. And that was the plan: to be the most productive team there. And we certainly were.”

early years, it was like I finally crested that mountain; I’d finally come around. And you know, I think they (his family) knew before then that I was okay, and I was going to be fine long term, but I think that was a big old stamp now saying that that (his accident and leg amputation) no longer affects me, I’m doing what I want to do. It was great to go there and not only to win, but to be able to share it with my family. I know how rare of an opportunity that is. They were in the building when I won and I got to celebrate with them after. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen in Beijing, so I know how rare of an opportunity that is to be able to do, especially with how large of a group that came to Korea. I know a lot of other athletes aren’t as fortunate to have such a large group of people travel across the world, so I was super honored, and it was unbelievable.”

WHY REFILL AT RENTALS?

In 2010, one Woodbridge Warrior member would go on to snag a gold medal at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada. Josh Pauls brought that medal back home and showed it to all the kids at the Woodbridge program. Wallace remembers the moment. “He showed it to me and my dad, and when we were holding it, my dad turned to me and said, ‘What do you think about that? You could win one of these one day.” John Wallace’s words would be prophetic – twice. “From that point on, that kind of became the goal in the back of my mind. Once I was in high school, it became a serious endeavor to make the development team, and then make the national team.” In 2013, Wallace was selected for the first US national development team, spent three years playing for them, and in 2016 was rostered on the US NationalWallace’sTeam. first international competition game was against the Republic of Korea. “It was fantastic,” he remembers with excitement. “I had never played internationally before. I was a rookie on the team, so they weren’t really sure what to expect of me and I wasn’t really sure what to expect of myself. But it was an honor and a privilege to get out there for the first time. I had goosebumps putting on that jersey and getting on the ice with all those guys that I looked up to.”

an unbelievable leader for that team and leading them to championships.”Itwasin2008 when Wallace suffered a life-altering injury. He explains. “We were up in Lake George for a family vacation. It was a yearly tradition to go up there and either rent a lake house, or that year what we did was we camped out. You can rent campsites out on islands in the middle of the lake. It’s fantastic, it’s so nice, and it’s such a great spot. I’ve had so many great memories, and there’s just one pretty bad one.” Wallace and his sister were waterskiing off of the same boat. At one point, the boat came between both and he ended up getting hit by it. “The propeller struck my right leg and severely damaged it to the point where once I got to the hospital, it needed to be amputated. That was a really, really tough time in my life. But the one thing is it makes you grow up really fast. When you go through something like that as a 10-year-old kid, you start worrying about very different things. As a normal 10-year-old kid when you’re in fifth grade or sixth grade, usually you’re not thinking about all your doctor’s appointments or about insurance or all that different stuff that comes into play. When I got thrust into that situation, having to rehab, having to learn how to do so many things again, having to go through those trials and tribulations, it really kind of changes the way you think and matures you much quicker.”

It was always my favorite sport, and I went up to her at the end of the first practice and I just said, ‘I’m back on the ice!’

His next big accomplishment and thrill was getting to go to the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games in Korea. He was in Josh Pauls’ skates eight years later. “It was the dream for a long time, and to have it come to fruition, it was almost a full circle moment for me and my family,” Wallace says. “After having gone through so much uncertainty, especially in those

Wallace began playing for a club called New Jersey Freeze, and he was a member of the team Woodbridge Warriors. “It was unbelievable,” Wallace remembers. “My mom loves to tell the story. I said, ‘That was fun, I want to do it again.’ He then asked me about my score, and I just completely forgot. I went to check it, and it wasn’t bad. I was impressed with myself. It was the first time (shooting an arrow in competition), and it was kind of a spark. That showed me what this is all about, and I really wanted to do it.”

After getting his hunting license at age 12, he went out looking for deer and, since it was the bow hunting season of October and November, carried a bow and arrow. He missed his first buck by two feet, but he was fascinated aiming at a target and trying to get closer. “Since I became such a big bow hunter after about two years of just practicing in my backyard, and going into ranges and doing fun 3D shoots where you shoot at the fake animals, I kind of realized I wanted to do a little bit more with it, so then I started doing some competitions,” KlinedinstKlinedinst, says.a recent Indian Hills High School graduate who is now attending Ramapo College, in late July took part in the Buckeye Classic in Ohio, an outdoor national archery competition where he placed sixth. He was the highest placed finisher from New Jersey, and he competed as a member of Team USA Hornets, the national archery team.

“It obviously wasn’t the best, but I didn’t care actually. I know a lot of people want to shoot competitively but can’t shoot their bow that well, and they don’t go to these competitions. And the only thing I can say is you’re not going to do any better. You can shoot as well as you want in your backyard, but now that you have to step up in front of people and score in front of people, it brings down your score a lot.” For Klinedinst, all of it was a learning experience, but he didn’t give up. He recalls one competition in Pennsylvania. “I remember walking into the stadium and seeing just a ton of people, so I stepped up, and there was a lot of arrows going, and shot the best I could. By the time the competition was over, I went up to my dad, and I had forgotten to check my score.

I was winning at all the regionals.” In fact, he had taken first place at the regionals at WA-XO-BE Archers in Monmouth Junction. The Olympic coach asked him to fly down to their headquar ters, which was at the Archery Learning Center in Snellville, Georgia. “I got down there, and the coach and a bunch of team mates were just standing there waiting for me to walk through the gate. In June of 1972, I completed my first year of college. Penny graduated, with high honors, from Eastside High School. That summer, Penny pretty much only talked about looking forward to attending Rutgers University in September. She had become more and more obsessed with an immense love for life deep within the ocean. We found ourselves talking less and less about the fine art of writing poetry.

While I did my best to support Penny’s new love for the science of life within the deep blue sea, it just didn’t spark a flame within me. Also, Penny had gotten a job as a lifeguard at the Paterson YMCA. Penny was a great swimmer, while I was at best, a mediocre swimmer.

In September of 1972, Penny began attending Rutgers University. We would write each other, but within a couple of months, our letters to each other became further and further apart. It was in the very month of September of 1972, that I did see Teresa in the student center. We sat and talked for a short time. Teresa talked and talked about the wonderful boy she had met during the summer. There was a certain sadness that filled my heart when I saw a spark in her

Hold dear to the friends in your life. But know that sometimes, there comes a time when the best gift you can give a friend, is to let them go and move on to new vistas in their life. It isn’t easy. And, yes, it does hurt. But truly, sometimes people come into our life for a very specific purpose. And sadly, when they have fulfilled that purpose, they may need to move on and no longer be a close friend. It’s just the way life is sometimes.

I had signed up for a tennis course. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, beginning at 8:00 sharp my tennis class would begin. There was a young woman in my class, Teresa, whom I became good friends with. It was a most strange time for me. Because I was still dating my high school sweetheart, Penny Lancaster.

I always cherished having Teresa in my tennis class and having breakfast with her after tennis classes. Part of me always wanted to ask Teresa for a date, or at the very least, ask her for her telephone number. But I had this strong inner feeling that it would be all so wrong, that I needed to be true blue to Penny.

n the beginning of September of 1971, I turned 18. And also, in the early part of September, I began my studies at County College of Morris. At the time, CCM did not have the number of buildings that it now has. It was a beautiful campus and all of the professors that I had, were very dedicated to the fine art of teaching.

Beloved Friendships

But now I was developing a close friendship with Teresa. After our tennis class was over, Teresa and I would go to the college cafeteria and have breakfast together. It was all such a quaint and charming friendship. However, it left me feeling very guilty and confused, for I was developing heartfelt feelings for Teresa. And, sadly, Penny and I were finding that we had less and less time to see each other. For at the time, I was attending CCM full time and working 29 hours a week at the A&P.

Our ships were now sailing in different directions. Penny had developed a great interest in oceanography.

Sometimes people come into our life for a season and a reason. When I was in high school, I was painfully shy. Penny helped me to overcome my shyness. She encouraged me to join the staff of my high school newspaper. When I began my studies at CCM, new people began to come into my life. Sadly, between attending CCM, doing homework, and working at the A&P, there was less and less time to see Penny.

Penny and I continued to date during my freshman year at CCM. But we both knew, deep in our hearts, that we were drifting apart. It was no fault of either one of us.
