for having been the better aim. It was always a friendly, good-willed debate between the two brothers that extended throughout both of their lives.

The Thanksgiving of 1945, is also the time when Dad began setting up his elaborate train village.

There was a little hall area, just outside of Dad’s bedroom. It was there that Dad

Japan surrendered in early September of 1945 and in early November 1945, Dad returned home to his Mom and Dad and brothers and sister, in their humble home at the end of Mabey Lane in Old Lincoln Park. This was the very home that my Dad was born in. The very home that my Grandpa Mabey built, when he was a young man.

I think that the Thanksgiving of 1945 was very special and very dear to my father’s heart. He spoke of it often, over the years.

Things were different then.

Old Lincoln Park was a rural farming community, filled with open fields, farms and wooded lands. There were no big supermarkets around then. In fact, Dad often talked how Grandma Mabey would buy her groceries from Mr. Wolfson,

built a long wooden table, upon which to set up his imaginative train tracks, filled with homes and stores along the tracks.

It was also the era in which my Dad got his first real, full time job as a truck driver for Moon Carrier, located in Paterson, New Jersey. After a few years of working for that company, Dad and his brother

Edward started their own business, Mabey Trucking and Rigging. They rented a small trucking terminal in Paterson. The company flourished for many years.

Whenever my Dad spoke of the Thanksgiving of 1945, he would have a twinkle in his eye and a bit of a smile on his face.

I Remember Dad... continued from page 2 taped some of my father’s recollections and stories of life “right after the war.” It was a phrase that Dad often used. It was a marker of sorts. There was the time “before the war,” and the time “after the war.” I think it marked, for my father, his days of boyhood and then his days when he became

a man. World War II was a mark of manhood for my Dad. I loved my Dad with all my heart. My Dad went Home to be with the Lord in May of 2006. I still deeply mourn his passing. There were so many stories that Dad would tell about his time at Hickam Air Field and about his return home

to peace time, when the war ended. I think that the Thanksgiving of 1945 was one of the most special thanksgivings in my father’s life.

Dad loved the old Mabey Estate. So much so that when his grandmother, Dora Mabey, passed away in 1959, Dad bought the old Mabey Homestead. It

still stands on the corner of Route 202 and Mabey Lane, a testament to the carpentry skills of my great grandfather, William Mabey. This was the very home where Mom and Dad raised my sister, Patricia, and I. My Dad was a dedicated Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 170 of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

Dad served as Scoutmaster from 1965 till 1993. Dad loved scouting. He had a deep conviction that it was a good and worthy thing for a boy to be a scout and learn self reliance, morals and how to use a compass.

I can still hear the echo of my late Uncle Ed, “I know you took the first shot at that turkey, Dick.

But, I’m telling you brother, it was my shot that got that old Tom Turkey.” I’d give an eyetooth to hear that brotherly debate, just one more time.

Freeholders Fete Retiring Butler Nutrition Site Manager

he Morris County Board of Freeholders have honored 37-year county employee Kathleen Fairlamb of Butler, awarding her a county resolution of thanks and congratulations for four decades of helping to make sure Morris County’s senior-citizens-in-need received meals each day via the county’s Butler Nutrition site.

Kathleen was joined by her son, Preston, and sisters Hazel and Sharon, at a ceremony held for her retirement on Sept. 25 at the Morris County Board of Freeholders’ meeting in Morristown.

Mrs. Fairlamb started working for the county in 1983 and has been a mainstay at the Butler location, serving not just meals but great humor and compassion, and acting as a mentor and trainer to younger people entering the field of public service.

“She became a respected member of the community, loved by the seniors she serves and the staff with whom she works,’’ said Freeholder Director Doug Cabana, who awarded Kathleen the resolution. “She set an example of exemplary service, making our county a better place to live and work.’’

Under her direction, the team at Butler Nutrition serve an average of 10,000 congregate meals each year and prepare an additional 20,000 meals annually for home delivery.

“I think it is such an important program to have here in Morris County, to make sure we feed our seniors. It is a

wonderful program and I do hope it continues forever and ever,’’ Fairlamb told the freeholders.

To the audience, she said: “It’s been a wonderful time

National Winter Activity Center Announces Rebrand as Winter4Kids

Winter4Kids is programs, a facility (National Winter Activity Center) and the most committed and passionate team of individuals. It offers mentoring, meals, equipment and experiential winter learning for school age youth. Still located in Vernon, NJ, The National Winter Activity Center is the nation’s only 501(c)(3) nonprofit winter facility, dedicated to improving the lives of youth through winter activity. The aim is to leverage the “dark days of winter” and challenge the children to be much more active. This season Winter4Kids will accommodate almost 3,100 youth.

From new lifts and trails, to an upgraded lodge along with state of the art, fully automated snowmaking, Winter4Kids welcomes a host of new upgrades. With the addition of a Nordic Center in 2019 and a 27,700 square foot lodge addition complete with full kitchens, expanded equipment rooms and a cafeteria coming online during the summer of 2020, the program and venue will be poised to accommodate 10,000 kids annually by 2023.

“The goal for the National Winter Activity Center has always been to increase

access to incremental, life changing, winter activity in children across the country.

Through Winter4Kids, our original vision remains the same as aspects of the vision have been amplified,” said Schone Malliet, Founder and CEO of Winter4Kids. “At our core, winter activities are a means to end for the kids, and our programs makes unimaginable dreams inevitable opportunities.”

Winter4Kids program school age youth receive experiential learning, life changing values from coaching mentors and are provided with the appropriate equipment, clothing and healthy meals over the course of six sessions.

Winter4Kids Progress • Nordic Center – Fully deployed this year, the Nordic Center features a 1.5KM loop with snowmaking and lights, supported by a new lodge with eating, equipment and storage areas. In conjunction with the Norwegian Ski Federation and Winter4Kids board member, Helen Ingebretsen, a “ski play” component has been developed for fun freestyle runs.

• Winter Activity Club – Participating in programs will cultivate young enthusiasts who return year over year, have a love for the outdoors, and a desire to sustain their

progress. An annual trip with parents and guardians is planned.

• Team Winter4Kids - This program molds young athletes by supporting events and activities that are recreational, organized (US Ski and Snowboard), and interscholastic (NJISRA and USCSA). The development of the competition facilities supports high level Alpine and Nordic events as well. This year, we will host a NOR AM Cup Parallel Slalom event, as well as Regional FIS competitions with US Ski &

Snowboard.

Sara Tomasheski wears a few hats at the library. She is the Adult and Children’s Li-

brarian, but also runs most of the events, and her Summer-2019 suggested one perhaps has been the most adventurous, resulting in her multicolored strands. “I wanted to increase our (among kids in town) reading. A lot of kids will read, but it tends to be the same kids all the time who are coming in here and picking out books. So, I mentioned to Stephanie (Iberer-Flood, Library Director), ‘Hey, can I do this contest?

Iberer-Flood immediately approved and applauds the results. “Sara’s summer reading challenge with the kids resulted in the highest teen summer reading numbers at LP Library: over 700 books! Sara does such a wonderful job at the Lincoln Park Public Library. She put so much thought and effort into creating a new summer reading program that would get the older kids excited and participating. In addition to the hair challenge, she also changed the prize system by creating scratch-off tickets that could be redeemed for prizes, such as fullsized candy bars, or used as raffle tickets for the hundreds of prizes we had that were generously donated by local businesses.

We are very lucky to have Sara. I can’t wait to see what idea she comes up with for next year!”

In June, Tomasheski visited the elementary and middle schools in town and spoke about summer reading and goings-on at the library. In the past, the younger kids would read for 15 minutes, and every time they did so, they would color a picture and get a prize. Last year, she changed it to reading

an hour every week, and halfway through a book they’d receive one prize, and another when completing the book. After noticing that many kids only completed half the cycle, she went for something more lovingly aggressive. “I said to myself, ‘I read a lot, I have to read anyway, they have to read anyway,’” and the idea was born. Every book read had to be a minimum of 100 pages, a doable size. A larger book, such as those in the “Harry Potter” series, would count continued on page 16

She has spent more than 40 years as either a teacher or administrator (principal) in Catholic education, including more than 34 years as principal at Holy Spirit School.

Placing Holy Spirit’s school into a religious context, Sister Marie quoted the Filippini’s founder, St. Lucy Filippini, who said, “The Church of God is not a restful garden, but a working vineyard.”

“We have evolved with the times, going from a paper and pen environment to the high-tech world of iPads,” said Sister Marie. “There have been so many changes over the years. We went from no technology to so much technology.

Technology has really come alive here. All our classrooms have smart boards, Chrome books, laptops, computers, and we have iPads for all the children. All the devices belong to the school and they stay in the school. The children may not take them home. And, cell phones are not permitted to be used during the school day, or in the classroom.”

The school continues to grow spiritually and academically. “We have the same challenges as any other Catholic school.”

“The greatest challenge is having people realize the importance of a Catholic education. The challenge is also the financial aspect. Parents today are not looking for a catholic education primarily because of the high taxes they pay. The result is some schools are closing.”

To Find Her Daughter, Pamela’s Determined Search

I

By Richard Mabey Jr. have the honor and pleasure of knowing Pamela Reynolds Ross, since the first grade. For the most part, we were in each other’s classes all through grade school.

We were very good friends. We stayed friends all through high school, but in attending a regional high school, sadly we lost a bit of the close friendship that we shared in grade school. Truly, Pamela is one of the kindest individuals whom I have ever known in my entire life.

Pamela has been working very hard, for several decades, to find her biological daughter, whom Pamela gave up for adoption when she was only 17 years old. This was back in 1971. It was a different time then, a different culture. Nobly, Pamela signed adoption papers, thinking that would be best for her baby daughter.

As the ink hit the paper, on the adoption papers, Pamela was truly alone. She was offered no legal counsel at all. She was offered no psychological counseling at all. The powers that be assured Pamela that she was doing the right thing. That giving up her baby daughter was for the best for her little daughter.

In a room, the size of a closet, Pamela signed the adoption papers. Then, in a matter of seconds, her precious baby was whisked away from her, never to be seen by Pamela ever again.

The biological father of Pamela’s beloved baby girl was

a 24 year old Vietnam Veteran, whom Pamela had fallen deeply in love with. Dreams of marriage, a cottage, a white picket fence, were shattered, when the love of Pamela’s life, left her and shirked his responsibilities to help Pamela raise her beloved baby girl. Sadly, Pamela’s boyfriend at the time, suffered from a serious case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Fast forward to the present time. Pamela simply wants her biological daughter to have the option to have the opportunity to meet her, if she wants. Pamela’s daughter is now 48 years old and would be capable of making that decision on her own. In Pamela’s own words, here is her perspective in a nutshell.

“The whole point is this: I’m not trying to replace the adoption family or win custody. I never wanted to put my daughter through a tug-a-war. I simply would love to know she is well. Importantly, she should have her vital health history. I’ve asked if someone would kindly contact her and let her know our contact information. At the age of 48, she can choose what she wants to do with that information.”

So without further ado, here are the essential clues to the identity of Pamela’s biological daughter, whom Pamela relinquished for adoption back in 1971: Pamela gave birth to her baby girl on January 18th of 1971, at Chilton Hospital in Pompton Plains, New Jersey.

The adoptive father was an accountant. The adoptive mother was a registered nurse. The couple had a six year old son, at the time they adopted Pamela’s baby girl. Sadly, Pamela has not been able to find a court or agency that will attempt to contact the woman who Pamela gave birth to and relinquished for adoption.

The adoption process took place on November 16th of 1971 at the Morris County Courthouse in Morristown, New Jersey. The Adoption Agency, Department of Children and Families, was also located in Morristown. The adoptive couple were both of the Roman Catholic faith.

From all indications, it appears that this couple lived in Morris County in 1971.

Sadly, these are the only clues that Pamela has, in her search to locate her biological daughter. Pamela is now 66 years old. Her biological daughter, whom she gave up for adoption, is now 48 years old. Pamela is more determined than ever to find her daughter. Pamela is emotionally prepared, if her biological daughter does not want to talk to her or see her. But for Pamela, she just longs to know if her daughter is healthy, safe and sound.

The New Jersey Federation of Women’s Clubs Celebrates Its 125th Anniversary

By Steve Sears he New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs of GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Clubs) has quite a past. 125 years to be exact.

But, what this large group of Garden State women are doing now to better the current and pave the path for the future ensures another 125 years and more.

Originally founded in 1894, the NJSFWC at one time had more than 40,000 members. There are approximately 6,500 current members, with 184 clubs statewide.

Mary Wolfe, a member of the Woman’s Club of Vineland, is also current state President. “The purpose, as it says in our Mission Statement, is to provide opportunities for education, leadership training, and community service through participation in local clubs, enabling members to make a difference in the lives of others one project at a time.” She then adds, “What distinguishes NJSFWC from other volunteer organizations is that we do not have a single focus. Our member clubs across New Jersey select projects that are relevant to their members and address the needs of their communities. At the same time, NJSFWC offers clubs structure and support in their pursuit of community service. Clubs have the opportunity to join together with other federated clubs to make their impact on a project even more significant.”

And, the tradition continues. Wolfe adds, “One way clubs work together is in support of the State Project, which is currently CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates of New Jersey. Our clubs are working to raise public awareness of the organization and provide monetary and in-kind

donations. Just one example - this month clubs have been collecting craft items, such as coloring books and crayons, which will give the children in foster care an activity to do while their CASA volunteer and other adults are in discussions. Since the beginning of NJSFWC, clubs have worked tirelessly in support of legislation that is of significant importance to our Mission. Just recently, club members were

asked to contact their legislator on the same day (Monday, September 23) to urge support for Miranda’s Law. (Miranda Vargas School Bus Driver Red Flag Act). This was done in conjunction with our international organization, General Federation of Women’s Clubs, which is headquartered in Washington, DC. Every 20 minutes they read, I made little scratch-off tickets, and they scratched them off and got to win some kind of prize (book, candy bar, etc.). Towards the end of the summer, they started turning in the tickets.

I had one girl turn in 90 tickets in one day!”

When Tomasheski asked the girl’s mother if she really read all those books, the mother responded, ‘She really did. She really wants you to dye your hair!’”

When each child turned in their reading list, there was a checkoff area on the bottom as to what color Tomasheski should dye here hair. Options were norm colors like black and red, and different kinds like blue, purple, green, orange, and multi-color. Multi-color was the unanimous choice.

The end result (of the reading, although you can tell in her voice that her hair being rainbow colored is exciting) brings much satisfaction. “I think it means that people are interesting in reading, but especially because kids are so much into electronics that maybe they need some kind of incentive to read. Yes, we were doing this as a contest, yes, we were doing this as motivation, but I was hoping to get kids to think - and I think it did - that reading is actually enjoyable.”

Securing new members, as well as getting the word out to the communities served, is a challenge. Barbara McCloskey belongs to the Woman’s Club of the Denville-Rockaway area and is also Third Vice President and State Membership Chairman. “The passion of the women involved, the passion and dedication that the women have, I just feel that that passion should be better known to the communities and to the people out there. I don’t think people realize what these clubs are accomplishing or how much they’re doing.”

Wolfe also claims that communication with members state-wide is sometimes challenging as well. “I think we’re making strides with that through our website (njsfwc.org). Whereas previously all information was sent to club presidents, now all members have access to our state newsletters, projects ideas, etc.”

Birthday #125 is being celebrated as only the NJSFWC knows how: by serving others. “Early in this administration,” says Wolfe, “the Shining Future Endowment Campaign was started to enable NJSFWC to continue our work well into the future.

Since the beginning of NJSFWC, most of our successes have been self-funded. But now we are looking to outside organizations for donations. Our dedicated website (www. njsfwcshiningfuture.org) was established to educate potential donors and provide a means to donate. With the funds, we hope to increase scholarships, work with organizations dedicated to helping survivors of sexual abuse and human trafficking, conduct a Membership Awareness Campaign and invest funds to ensure the Federation will continue its important work for the next 125 years.”

In addition, on November 16, the date of this amazing federation’s founding, the NJSFWC will hold a Day of Service. Clubs will be collecting and donating items for college students. “These items will be donated to Embrella (formerly Foster and Adoptive Family Services) for distribution to college students who have aged-out of the Foster Care System and do not have family support that is so vital to young people starting college,” says Wolfe.

Fr. Dominik Bakowski Named New Pastor of Saint Joseph’s Parish

By Steve Sears r. Dominik Bakowski didn’t see it coming.

On July 17, Archdiocese of Paterson Bishop Arthur Serratelli appointed him Administrator of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church Parish in Lincoln Park, this comes as a new challenge for the 37-yearold from Poland as he just became a priest in 2016.

Then, on September 14, Serratelli visited the parish to celebrate 5:00 p.m. Mass and, towards the end of the Saturday afternoon Eucharistic celebration, he stood before the congregation and announced that Bakowski was being appointed pastor and would soon be officially installed.

“I was shocked,” says Bakowski. “It was a huge surprise for me because I am only 3 1/2 years in as a priest. But I was very grateful to Jesus and to my bishop for giving me this chance. I am very happy here at Lincoln Park with my St. Joseph family.

I care for my people from their birth with baptism to anointing them and saying their funeral Mass at their deaths.”

The date and time of Bakowski’s official installation is to be determined. He takes over for Fr. Thomas Mangieri, who was

pastor from 2016 until his retirement on June 30.

For Bakowski, his schedule and duties for serving his new community, a congregation since the early 1900s, is different every day. “I say Mass, hear confessions, and visit the sick and dying. I also have meetings with people who have many different problems.” Also, he has been busy making small changes that will both sustain and increase the faith in the community. “So far, I have expanded our hours of Eucharistic Adoration, started having Mass at our nearby nursing home, and started a ministry for visiting the residents there called, ‘And You Visited Me’”. Bakowski would also like to work with people who have different projects and ideas for the parish. For now, his future plans are to start a Bible study, host a Santa Breakfast for Lincoln Park children in December, and next year to plan possible trips to Washington State, Oregon, and California.

For all, his is an open-door policy. “My office is open for everyone, not only for Catholics. If someone has a question about God or about the Catholic faith, we can talk together.”

Bakowski, who is interested in planes

and enjoys sports like soccer, basketball, golf and swimming, he feels extremely welcome at his new home, and speaks proudly about the community. “We are one amazing family here at St. Joseph’s in Lincoln Park, and everyone has a special gift to make something beautiful happen in our parish and in our community.”

Finally, Bakowski has a special request of his parishioners and the reader.

“I ask everyone to pray for me and for my vocation.”

Sr. Marie has been the recipient of many major awards and honors, including Distinguished Principal by the National Catholic Education Association. In addition, Sr. Ma-

rie was the recipient of the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal from Pope John II, an honor through which she also was conferred by the late Bishop Frank Rodimer, the title of “monsignor”.

Sr. Marie received the Vivere Christus Award in 2015 from Bishop Arthur J Serratelli for personal contributions to the mission of Christ and His Church. She received the Caritas Award for Advocacy, granted to a very select few individuals in recognition of their embodiment of the spirit of stewardship in our Diocese. Sister’s award presentation described her as “a legend in our Diocese for her fierce commitment to Catholic education and a most significant witness to the presence of Christ”.

“This ability to integrate our curriculum continues to create an environment of love and understanding deeply rooted in our faith. It is in this way that we enable our students to gain the self-confidence and esteem so needed by the youth of today. Raritan Headwaters Association Celebrates 60 Years of Guarding Our Waterways

Holden he Raritan Headwaters Association [RHA] was formed in a 2011 merger of two successful nonprofit conservation groups, the Upper Raritan Watershed Association [URWA] and the South Branch Watershed Association [SBWA], both founded in 1959, to engage New Jersey residents in safeguarding water sources.

Then, there were few laws to protect clean water and air. The first Earth Day and the Federal Clean Water Act were more than a decade away, and the Clean Air Act was several years in the future.

Today, the RHA currently owns 10 preserves and natural areas totaling about 415 acres. It is known as a state leader in environmental education and outreach, and for their work in water quality monitoring, ecological research, habitat restoration, land preservation and active volunteer stewardship.

A watershed is the area of land that drains into a body of water such as a river, lake, stream or bay. The 470-squaremile watershed region is a part of the Raritan River Basin which drains into the Raritan Bay, and eventually the Atlantic Ocean.

The watershed is geographically defined by the ridges and valleys of the upper Raritan watershed which is in three counties, Hunterdon, Morris and Somerset.

“There are no political boundaries for a watershed,” said Cindy Ehrenclou, executive director of the RHA. “We

are partially in 38 municipalities. We’re about what is in streams and groundwater in the underground aquifers which is a source of drinking water. Eighty-percent of the people in our region get their drinking water from private wells. If we want to know about the health of our watershed, we hold community well-testing events. We partner with municipalities such as Randolph, Chester, or Bedminster, for example. We sell water test kits (at a nominal fee) two weeks every year and people go to their Townhall and pick up their well test kits.”

“We collect them and get everything sampled at a certified lab. The information we collect is private. For us it is a way to accumulate data which will give us the health of the water supply. For the homeowner, it gives them the opportunity to see if their drinking water is safe. We’re doing the science, collecting the data on the health of the water.

For instance, in Redington we discovered a trend for arsenic in the water supply. People would not normally know that they were being exposed to this dangerous substance. So, we will sit down with them and ask about how old is their well, and how deep is the well? It’s a little more personal than going to a store and buying a water testing kit. People should be testing the water on a yearly basis. If not them, then who?”

“We picked up everything from tires to shopping carts. All kinds of debris ends up in the streams. We use the data we collect, and we share it with Bill Kibler, who is our policy director. He goes down to Trenton to make the lawmakers aware of this issue.”

“There is a ‘single-use’ plastic bag Bill still pending in Trenton, so we can provide the science to defend those kinds of policies being established. We can say, ‘in three hours, on April 13, we picked up 18-tons of debris. In that debris were 9,000 plastic bags and 3,000 plastic bottles. These numbers are compelling because we are doing the science. We did a micro plastic study in South Branch, and we found that the micro plastics are making it through the water treatment plants.”

“These plastic bags and bottles overtime break down into smaller and smaller pieces and they are not being treated in treatment plants. They are going right into a drinking water supply, and nobody has a clue as to how dangerous this is.”

Another issue the RHA is dealing with is stormwater runoff. “Contaminated stormwater runoff this past summer is why Lake Hopatcong and Spruce Run, major summer entertainment spots and other lakes were closed,” said Ehrenclou. “They’re dealing with stormwater runoff from fertilizers, from oils in a parking lot and other contaminants.”

“Stormwater runoff is the biggest problem in our waterways today,” Ehrenclou said. “Once you cut down the forest and you pave it over with ballfields, grass and parking lots, it becomes compressed land.

When it rains the water runs off carrying with it any pollutants that are on the ground, such as wildlife droppings, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, oil from cars, and pet wastes, and even runoff from septic tanks. It all rushes into the stream because it does not have the trees and vegetation to slow it down and filter it, so, it’s going to end up in the waterways.”

“The water may look clear, but then suddenly you see algae bloom which will make the water warmer and more toxic. Harmful algae blooms occur when there is too much phosphorus introduced into a lake. When this happens, and it’s sunny and hot- photosynthesis occurs and the phosphorus turns into toxic bacteria, (cyanobacteria), a bluegreen mix that can cause rashes to flu-like symptoms in humans and, in some cases, death in pets.”

“It’s just not a good situation. Some people say ‘oh it will fix itself’ but that doesn’t always happen. Sometimes an intervention will help, but other times there is permanent damage to the environment. Everything you do on land affects the water quality.”

“It all comes from stormwater runoff, and the damage occurs when there is a big development, such as changing a forest into ballfields and parking lots.” For more information see www.raritanheadwaters.org.

Patania/Ryerson Middle School Students Create Window Works of Art

n Friday September 27, sixty five middle schoolers walked from Patania/Ryerson Middle School to Main Street, Lincoln Park, to paint fall themed designs on participating store windows. A contest was involved with prizes given to the top three winners. This year the contest occurred the day before the town’s Lincoln Park Day Festival which took place on Saturday September 28.

Local businesses sponsor the event and cover the cost of the T-shirts (which get plenty of painted designs on them too), Wayne Auto, Robbins Ice, Dr Jeff Falduto, Shop Rite Liquors, State Farm, Fixins BBQ & Biscuits, Lincoln 1st Bank and Darmofalski Engineering covered the cost of paints, brushes supplies and T-shirts (printed by Main St business;

Riola Design). A&A Fine Foods donated water bottles for all, and the DPW will come after 2 weeks and power wash the paint off. Some impressive talent is displayed each year and several businesses like to keep the designs up through Halloween.

Superintendent Jim Grube viewed the painting in progress, all under the watchful eye of coordinator and Art Teacher, Jolene Gibbs Dempski. The Lincoln Park Police similarly escort the students to and from the school and keep

traffic at a respectful pace during the painting. Many smiles are seen on the faces of passing motorists and pedestrians.

It is a high energy event filled with youthful exuberance.

The Boro Offices are grateful for the support of all those participating businesses, and for the judges, and especially for the students and chaperones who make magic with paint and water. Teacher Jolene Gibbs Dempski and Principal Mike Meyer get the kids fired up and make it all happen.

n Saturday September 28th, The First Reformed Church of Lincoln Park held its 9th annual Vintage Car and Motorcycle Show Fellowship & Fundraiser event. A robust basket-auction takes place right before the trophies are handed out, and this year 95 baskets were raffled off and 22 Trophies awarded.

Breakfast and Lunch are sold on premises, and DJ Nick at Night entertained the crowd and helped with all the announcements. Door prizes are awarded every 30 minutes and keeps the day lively.

The First Reformed Church is now in its 102nd year at this location on Chapel Hill Road, and the Consistory and Congregation are grateful to the neighbors and townspeople and car-show crowd who turn out

every year to help. So many local businesses provide trophy sponsorship or make general donations, this event turns out to be the Church’s second biggest fundraiser each year. Sixty-five cars and motorcycles turned out on a spectacular sunny Fall day, and with the Lincoln Park Day festival just blocks away, plenty of foot traffic also was seen.

Vehicles from the 1930s to the 1990s participated and the variety was breathtaking.

From 2 seat Thunderbirds to GTOs to Corvettes were seen along with vintage pickup trucks and bikes. A lovely Red & White Crown Victoria took home honors for Bestin-Show. The church thanks all the volunteers and all the car owners who participated, we are already looking forward to our 10th, next year.

he Suburban Woman’s Club of Pompton Plains is pleased to announce the winner of the October 2019 Yard-OfThe-Month Award. Congratulations to Daniel and Dina Harper. The Harper’s, of 200 Mountain Avenue in Pompton Plains, are lifelong residents of Pequannock Township.

Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience

O

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience.

Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event.

Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering.

“I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab.

Schwab a ttended an Epic Experience camp in May 2015.

Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.”

Schwab joined the

Alumni Board of Epic Experience as an Outreach Specialist in June 2015.

In 2017, she became the Alumni Team lead, and in 2018 joined the Board of Directors.
