St. Raphael Celebrates Pastor’s One Year Anniversary And Looks Ahead
By Jennifer Walkup n July, St. Raphael Catholic Church in Livingston celebrated Pastor Father Lito’s oneyear anniversary with the church. The parish reflected
on a year of great hope and change in the church, and is looking forward to plans for St. Raphael’s future. “Father Lito is open-minded and warmhearted,” said parishioner

Kristen Carrotto. “He creates a positive atmosphere of belonging, and acceptance for all. He strongly promotes ‘an attitude of gratitude’ making us realize every day how much we have in our lives to be grateful for and that God has truly blessed us.” When asked about his vision for St. Raphael’s Church and his message to the community, Lito said, “I want everyone in the community to know they are welcome here. Come as you are.” Lito, who many in the parish refer to as “a priest of the people” and “never judgmental” has had many life experiences that have led him to his position in Livingston. He was ordained in 1993, after completing his philosophy and theology seminars at the Diocese of Lucena in the Philippines where he served as Vice Chancellor and Secretary to the Bishop until 1996. He also worked as a teacher at the seminary and director of Communications, all while running the diocese radio station, a pop station with ten percent religious programming geared to reaching youth. While he did not have parish experience in the Philippines, his work with the community helped to
hone his skills and love of involvement with people. In 1997, Lito was sent to Rome for a post-graduate degree in social communication at the Roman Pontifical University of Holy Cross. He graduated in 2000 with a three-year degree before moving to the United States, where he served at St. Teresa in Kenilworth as an assistant priest and parochial vicar for sixteen years. In 2013, he was formally accepted and incardinated as priest in Archdiocese of Newark. In 2016, he was assigned as pastor at St. Raphael in Livingston. When he arrived at St. Raphael, the church was in a transitional period and needed changes to make
the parish vibrant again. This past year, many positive things have changed for the parish. Lito has focused on the religious education program and family events. Some of the additions include a living nativity with animals at Christmas, an Easter Egg Hunt complete with the Easter Bunny, and many pageants and plays throughout the year with the religious education classes. “We have the most wonderful staff here at St. Raphael,” Lito said. “Everyone here is generous and kind and harnesses their gifts to serve the community, church and children. I am happy to provide any opportunity for them to
bring these gifts and service to the church.” St. Raphael has many long-time volunteers and teachers in the parish. They are very happy with the changes the last year has brought to the church as well as the surge of hope they feel under Lito’s inspiring leadership. “He has created a sense of wanting to get involved, for all to participate for the growth of our parish,” said parishioner Nellie Marootian. “He wants everyone to feel welcomed. He is patient and kind and makes everyone feel like they are lifelong friends.” Another parishioner, Edith Martin described Lito as “energetic, inspiring and continued on page 2

Pastor’s One Year Anniversary... continued from front page a visionary!” In the coming year, the church has many more plans to grow and improve the parish, such as the addition of the new youth minister which will be shared with West Orange’s St. Joseph Church, as well as many fun additions to the religious education program. Some of these plans include things like monthly themes, a church learning tour, recitation of the rosary, Bible Jeopardy competitions and at least three or four Old and New Testament plays. Through this active role the children will take in their religious edu-
cation, they will learn more and have fun. Denise Flannagan, assistant supervisor of Religious Education said, “Father Lito is helping us see the good in everyone and strive to be who God wants us to be.” The church also has a new priest in residence, the recently retired Father Joseph Bejgrowicz, who was a mentor to and great influence on Lito during his years at St. Teresa. “Father Lito is part of our families,” says parishioner Maria Lee. “He is a calm and patient man that sees good in everyone, he has a generous heart, and
he gives without limits. He is funny and a true innovator for the church. We need more priests to be like Father Lito. All are welcome is his view. He unites us.” Lito talked about his hopes for the church in the coming years. He expressed that he wants everyone to feel welcome no matter what. He says he is “all about compassion, happiness and comfort, not about rules.” He adds that his source of happiness is to see children smiling and happy in church. “As Jesus said,” Lito expresses. “Let the children come to me.”

fell asleep earlier and rose an hour and a half earlier in the morning. For those who don’t like to camp, increasing exposure to daylight and then avoiding sources of artificial light (i.e., televisions and cellphones) at night can help create a similar effect.

The American Library Association praises these programs as a way to create community, encourage creativity, and allow for a safe and relaxing way for adults to socialize. Livingston Council Appoints New Township Manager
T
By Jason Cohen he Livingston Township Council approved a resolution for the appointment of Gregory Bonin as Livingston’s new Township Manager, effective Aug. 7. Bonin replaces Acting Township Manager Russ Jones, who had supplanted Michelle Reade in October 2016, who served in the position for 11 years. Bonin comes to Livingston from the Township of Branchburg, where he has been the administrator for 18 years. He has also been the clerk for the Borough of Millstone for the past 15 years. A registered municipal clerk and a qualified purchasing agent, Bonin has been president of the New Jersey Municipal Manag-
ers Association since 2014 and is a member of both the International Institute of Municipal Clerks and the Municipal Clerks Association of New Jersey. He has a master of public administration degree from Rutgers University, and is an adjunct instructor in the Mini-MPA Program at the Rutgers University Center for Executive Leadership in Government. “We appreciate Greg for his spirit of innovation, his fund of knowledge, his even temperament, his approachable demeanor and style, and his leadership capabilities,” said Mayor Shawn Klein. The appointment is the result of a search process conducted by a third-party consultant. The search firm, Government Management Advisors, interviewed the
council members to identify characteristics that were desired for the township manager. The council went through two separate search processes: One that included candidates from New Jersey and Pennsylvania and another done nationally through the International City/County Management Association (ICMA). More than 70 resumes were received, and more than a dozen people were interviewed. Five sets of interviews were then conducted by the council members, and two sets of interviews each were held by a selected group of community representatives and a group of township department heads, each of which was chosen by the council. “Going into this process,
the council knew that with Acting Township Manager Russ Jones in place there would be no rush in finding our new township manager,” Klein said. “We could be deliberate in our search and not settle until we found the right applicant for Liv-
ingston. And we are confident that we now have.” The search firm described Bonin as “modest, yet confident in his knowledge and ability to oversee the various departments and activities of the town.” “Livingston is lucky to
have found Greg, and we hope and expect him to do a great job as he settles in for the long term to continue Livingston’s tradition of excellence,” Klein said. According to the municipal website, the township continued on page 7

Brooke is an extremely driven person who had endeavored and succeeded in becoming a top collegiate athlete by training hard and living a healthy lifestyle. Rolling Thunder Provides Awareness And Helps Veterans In Need
S
By R.E. Wagner end them home! We will not forget!” This is just a handful of statements rising above the steady rumble of passing motorcycles during the demonstrations, community events and charity drives organized across the country by the non-profit organization known as Rolling Thunder. In 1987, former United States Marine Corps Corporal Ray Manzo, U.S. Army Sergeant Major John Holland, Marine First Sergeant Walt Sides, and Sergeant Ted Sampley had lunch together at a diner in Somerville. They were meeting to discuss an unsettling issue that they, as servicemen, felt wasn’t being acknowledged
“
enough in certain military circles. By the end of the meeting, they parted ways with a mission in mind: to bring full accountability for the ‘Prisoners Of War’ and ‘Missing In Action (MIA)’ of all U.S. wars. For Diane Malanga, the secretary of Rolling Thunder’s 3rd Chapter in New Jersey and an official member for almost a decade, Rolling Thunder’s goal hit close to a place close to her heart. “They were deeply troubled knowing these men and women were forgotten,” explained Malanga, “thinking of their families who have not had a chance to have closure. My father served in World War II and Korea and my son just left for boot camp.” Since World War II, more
than 83,000 MIA cases have remained unresolved within military files. An MIA is a casualty classification assigned to combatants and prisoners of war (POW) who are reported missing during wartime. They may have been killed, wounded or captured. If deceased, neither their remains nor grave site have been positively identified. For these four veterans, 83,000 unaccounted soldiers left overseas on distant battlefields was an outrage. “They said we have to take a stand and do something to raise awareness,” Malanga continued. On May 29, 1988, Corporal Manzo recruited 2,500 men and women from all over the nation to attend Rolling Thunder’s first public event held in Washington
D.C. There, they assembled peacefully in the parking lot of the Pentagon and rode through the Capital on a predetermined route that led them to the Lincoln Memorial.
Since then, Rolling Thunder has grown into an established national organization. During their most recent rally in 2017, almost a million people attended to show their patriotism.

I was hooked from that moment.” In addition to raising awareness of their mission statement to bring home missing soldiers, Rolling Thunder Chapters across the nation provide financial support to help veterans in need. “At times our aging veterans struggle to pay bills,” Malanga explained. “We help with money to pay for heating and have also helped many Veterans with rent or mortgage payments. Last year, Chapter Three raised approx. $24,000 through various events, rides, personal donations and fundraising.” Through charitable donations, as well as organizing community events for service men and women, Rolling Thunder Chapters
are known to host events at hospitals and nursing homes like picnics and pizza parties for Veterans. An annual program known as Christmas Families is held where New Jersey Rolling Thunder Chapter members provide gift cards from Shoprite, Walmart and Toy- R-Us to help Veterans during the holidays. Although primarily known for their roaring motorcades and biker persona, Rolling Thunder encourages anyone with a passion to pay respects to service men and women to volunteer their time or donating to the cause. Interested in donating or volunteering? Contact a local Rolling Thunder Chapter to learn more, or write to the National Headquarters located in Lebanon at P.O. Box 216 Neshanic Station, N.J., 08853.

Non Profit Accepting Monetary Support And New Donations For Care Packages
By Cheryl Conway ontinued support from the community has helped to save this non-profit organization in providing services to victims of sexual assault for more than a dozen years. SAVE, a non-profit program founded through the Family Service League counseling agency, provides comprehensive services to victims and their families of sexual assault. Established in 2004, SAVE was formerly called the Essex County Rape Care Center. Through financial support and donations from the community, SAVE has been able to maintain its services such as its 24-hour emergency hotline, emotional support, counseling ser-
vices, prevention education presentations and rape care packages to victims. Kearny Bank in Caldwell is collecting items for SAVE during the months of August and September in its office. Items can be dropped off at 417 Bloomfield Avenue, Caldwell. Call 973-226-7911 for more information. SAVE is in the need of new items in the sizes of large and extra-large. Sweat pants, sweat shirts, women’s cotton underwear, socks, deodorant, feminine products, tooth brushes, tooth paste, bottles of water and granola bars are in greatest need. “When we go to hospitals we bring with us a rape care package,” says Christine Ferro-Saxon, executive
director of SAVE, mostly to provide change of clothes and necessities for the victim “so they can wash up.” It is customary for the police to collect all the clothing worn by the victim after an incident and the victim is told “not to brush their teeth. To wash up is the worst thing you could do.” As a member of the Essex County Sexual Assault Team, SAVE provides comprehensive services to victims. Other members of that team include Confidential Sexual Violence Advocates, law enforcement and forensic nurse examiners. “We come from start to finish,” says Ferro-Saxon. When a victim goes to one of the four sexual assault regional team hos-
pitals, which include St. Barnabas in Livingston, University Hospital in Newark and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center of Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, “the team is activat-
ed,” says Ferro-Saxon. “We are the emotional support for the team during that process,” says Ferro-Saxon. “We accompany victims through the evidence collection process at
several area hospitals. We go with them,” to the police department to make a report, “then they are referred back to us in Montclair for counseling services. We continued on page 20

Six Ways To Help Prevent Bullying
P
utting an end to bullying is everyone’s responsibility. Whether at home, school or elsewhere, it’s important that we’re proactive. Here are five ways that kids and parents can do their part. 1. Don’t be a bystander. It’s true that it takes a lot of courage to stand out from the crowd and defend a victim of bullying. After all, the risk is that you’ll become the next target simply for speaking up. But reporting bullying and being there for someone who needs it are actions you’ll be proud of for the rest of your life. 2. Stop sibling bullying at home. You may think it’s harmless, but it’s not. Disdainful eye rolling, relentless teasing, humiliating taunts, hitting and verbal abuse directed at a sibling can cause depression and anxiety. Make sure your home is a safe place for everybody who lives there. 3. Enlist the help of adults. If you see a need for increased adult supervision at highrisk times and places at school or at home, ask for help from a trusted adult. 4. Get on board with an anti-bullying campaign at school. These campaigns show kids that bullying is not cool and won’t be tolerated any longer. Make an anti-bullying banner and use social media to advertise the
fact that you stand up against verbal and physical violence. 5. Parents: get involved. If your child is a victim of bullying, you need to take the situation seriously. Schools, the police and child psychology experts vigorously object to the belief that bullying is a childhood rite of passage. If the problem doesn’t stop, talk to the school authorities, and then to the police if there are no further improvements. At home, be vigilant about sibling bullying, and make it stop. 6. Pay attention to cyberbullying. Those who use cell phones, internet or other devices for social media interaction open themselves up to the latest form of bullying. Parents, be aware and get involved. Teach your child proper usage of these devices and reinforce that sending any text, message or photo that is cruel, hateful or threatening is as harmful as face to face bullying. Learn about the internet and pay attention to what your child is doing online. All users should be taught cyberethics and the law to prevent cyberbullying. Don’t be a victim. Don’t be a cyberbully. Bullying is no longer seen as a normal rite of passage for children; it’s a preventable behaviour that we can eradicate through education, awareness and action.

Group Requests Others To Paint Their Face Blue For Autism
A
new nonprofit has started a campaign to get individuals to paint their faces blue for autism. Spectrum Works, a nonprofit that provides job training and employment to individuals with autism, announced that 80 percent of autistic people are unemployed. It has set out to change this statistic with a new campaign, #GoSpectrumBlue. The blue face challenge was created by Spectrum Works to spread the word that people with autism can be great employees and to directly create jobs for individuals with autism. The challenge consists
of painting faces blue, sharing a photo and the challenge message on social media or via email, and challenging friends to #GoSpectrumBlue too. Paint kits are for sale at www.gospectrumblue.com. Ann Marie Sullivan, founder and CEO of spectrum Works said “The challenge goes beyond just spreading a message. Young adults with autism are actually a part of this campaign in concrete ways. Not only do all profits from the sale of paint kits provide jobs and job training for individuals with autism, but our trainees are also helping with graphic design, order fulfillment,
and other logistics of the #GoSpectrumBlue challenge.” Participating gives people the opportunity to join the movement and help Spectrum Works spread the word that people with autism can be great employees. Participants are encouraged to pass the challenge along to friends by sending them their own face paint kit. Paint kits are for sale at www.gospectrumblue.com for $10 and can be mailed directly to friends at no extra cost. Spectrum Works’ initial goal is to sell 10,000 #GoSpectrumBlue Paint Kits.

Millburn High’s Grossman Receives Wendy’s Heisman Award
T
By Stefanie Sears hings are running quite smoothly for Matthew Grossman, thanks to his hard work. A recent Millburn High School graduate and track runner, Matthew Grossman received the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award in June, an honor given for high school accomplishments in both academics and athletics. The award was created by Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas in 1994. “My guidance counselor, Mr. Fritchman, thought it would be a good opportunity to get some recognition for my achievements,” says Grossman about his decision to apply, “I had a form to fill out and a few essays to write for it.”

A ceremony, held by the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, took
place on June 21 at the Caldwell Town Hall. “My guidance counselor
and some of my teachers were there when I received the award,’’ Grossman said. “It felt great to get the recognition, and I felt proud of what I had accomplished.” Millburn High School Principal Dr. William Miron expressed pride in Grossman’s accomplishment. “We are very proud of Matt Grossman and fortunate that he was one of our students,’’ he said. “He is extremely unusual and a worthy recipient of the Wendy’s Heisman Award. Indeed, he may be the only Athlete of the Year in MHS history that graduated with the highest GPA (valedictorian). On top of that, his personal qualities are stellar and, even entering 9th grade, he was recommended by our middle school

Grossman completed his career as a high school runner averaging about 60 miles of running a week during his final two years. “Usually, one longer run a week and two faster ones,” he explained. “I try to focus on other things the night before a race, like listening to music or reading a book. We may have provided Matt with opportunities, but it was his determination and focus that achieved it all.” Grossman’s favorite school subject is math, he says, because he appreciates trying different methods to solve problems. He’s been running track since middle school, for about seven years in total. Having run track all four years of high school, Grossman received a varsity letter for all three seasons of running each year, which includes cross-country in the fall, indoor track in the winter, and

Online Exhibit Delves Into Sound Technology
he National Park Service has announced the release of an online exhibit and videos that explore the beginnings of recorded sound technology. The web presentation, titled “The Origins of Sound Recording,” is available at www.nps.gov/ edis/learn/historyculture/ origins-of-sound-recording.htm. Recent research calls attention to the work of French inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville. Scott’s phonautograph, patented in France in 1857, graph-
ically inscribed airborne sounds over time onto a permanent medium. As such, it was the earliest sound recording device. Twenty years later, Thomas Edison independently re-invented sound recording in the form of the phonograph – the first device to both record and reproduce, or play back, sound. The web exhibit, authored by researcher David Giovannoni, contextualizes and compares the innovations of Scott and Edison. It also explains the role of Charles Cros, a visionary Frenchman who
conceptualized sound reproduction just weeks before Edison. While both Scott and Cros clearly anticipated a number of essential elements of Edison’s phonograph, historical evidence indicates that Edison conceived of sound recording without prior knowledge of their work. A physical version of the exhibit, which includes a full-scale replica 1859 Scott phonautograph, is on display at Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange this summer through Aug. 27.

continued from page 18 with friends, watches Netflix, reads or rides his bike. “My parents inspire me by working hard to balance family life and work,” he said. Grossman said one positive of running track is the camaraderie he has formed with his teammates. A challenge, however, is timing. “Some of the positives are the excitement I get from competing and doing well and the friendships I made with my teammates,’’ he said. “It also forced me to stay on top of my schoolwork. One negative would be that it can be time consuming, and waking up early on the weekends to run isn’t pleasant.” In June of his junior year, he experienced what was probably his favorite
race. “I won the 3200-meter state championships,” said Grossman, “I was in contention to do well beforehand, but I wasn’t sure I could pull off the win. But, I felt great during the race and really pushed through and ended up winning right at the end.” Grossman has earned several titles for his track running throughout the years. In 2015, he was named Cross Country Group, Sectional, and County Champion; Cross Country Footlocker Nationals Qualifier; Outdoor and Indoor Track Sectional Champion; and Indoor County Champion. In 2016, he was the winner of the Outdoor Meet of Champions in the 3,200 meter run, the Outdoor Group Cham-
pion in the 3,200 meter run; Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Sectional Champion; Cross Country and Outdoor County Champion; a Cross Country Footlocker Nationals Qualifier; Outdoor All-American in 5K; and, finally, in 2017, Outdoor Group 4 Champion in the 3,200 meter run; Indoor All-American in 5K; Indoor and Outdoor Sectional Champion in the 3,200 meter run and Outdoor County Champion in the 3,200 meter run. In the fall, Grossman will attend Princeton University, where he plans to major in engineering. “I really want to help contribute to the Princeton track team,’’ he said. “I also want to do well in my classes. ”

Donations For Care Packages... continued from page 10 are there from the start then they come back.” SAVE also operates a 24-hour emergency hotline from callers who are anonymous to talk to a trained advocate to get information and emotional support. “We recommend people call to get their options as soon as possible,” says Ferro-Saxon. “It’s confidential; they don’t have to give their name. They can call us anonymously and ask questions.” Bilingual advocates and therapists are provided. Calls are received, not only from victims of sexual assault, but from professionals such as nurses, college personnel and police officials seeking more information on victims or resources, she adds. SAVE also serves as an
outreach resource to the community providing prevention education work at schools, colleges and community centers. “We customize presentations to age groups,” says Ferro-Saxon, covering topics such as healthy relationships and dating, to “educate young people to minimize the victims of rape.” According to Ferro-Saxon, “We are the only program in the county that services survivors of sexual assault.” Before SAVE came into play, a Safe And Sound Program was offered through University Hospital, says Ferro-Saxon, but services were not as comprehensive. “Every county in New Jersey has a rape care center,” she says. “Essex was the last one to have a pro-
gram. Essex has one of the highest rates of sexual assaults. Family Service League saw it was necessary to fill that gap.” In 2016, SAVE handled 165 sexual assault team accounts; 1,157 counseling sessions by those sexually assaulted and significant others affected by the assault; and 3,122 were received by the hotline, she says. While the majority of SAVE’s clients are from Essex County, the organization does provide counseling services to anybody, says Ferro-Saxon, a trained therapist with SAVE since 2008. For in-crises intervention services, SAVE deals with victims aged 13 and above, both male and female. Most do fall between the ages of
18-24, she adds. Even though SAVE does receive funding from the state and county, as well as some private resources and grants, Ferro-Saxon says monies are limited. “Every year we are at the mercy of state and federal budgets,” she says. “We rely on community support. We need more community funding and support.” The organization has held some smaller campaigns and relies on some local businesses to collect items for the Rape Care packages and kits. “Unrestricted funding is our biggest need,” she says. Grants are earmarked for specific needs like a bilingual counselor. What SAVE needs is “more funding to pay for administrative roles,” and capacity build-
ing of the program. “We are working with such a small pot; many are wearing many hats; we have multiple layers,” with staff needing to be available on weekends, holidays and the middle of the night. SAVE does rely on volunteer advocates, who do receive a stipend, as well. Advocates must be 21 and older, complete 40-hours of training, and are able to handle this line of work. “It’s difficult volunteering,” she says. Volunteers “need to be able to tolerate the emotional part and medical part; have to be willing to go into hospitals in the middle of the night. There’s a lot of emotional burnout in this job. They see or smell something beyond what they can comprehend. We understand this is not easy
work.” Financial donations are being received via the website at familyserviceleague. org; mailed to 60 South Fullerton Ave., Suite 109, Montclair, N.J., 07042; call 973-746-0800 to have donations picked up. For emergency hotline, call 1-877-733-2273. “Our goal is to encourage people to seek help regardless of how long the assault happened. We want to advise people where they could go. We have people from all over the county. This could happen in your backyard but there is help if it does.” SAVE received an award by the North Essex Chamber of Commerce on June 8 as the 2017 Outstanding Non-profit Organization.

ile can be a worthy addition to rooms with potential moisture issues or areas in a home that may routinely necessitate quick cleanup. Because they are not damaged by constant contact with water, tiled floors and walls are often found in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and entryways. Although tile is resilient, it is not impervious to the microorganisms that tend to proliferate in areas where moisture and humidity are commonplace. Microbes can grow rapidly in warm areas, especially if food is present. Mold or mildew issues also can become problematic seemingly overnight. But certain modifications can help

homeowners alleviate the proliferation of microorganisms. Various manufacturers have developed their own innovative tile that contributes to cleaner, and sometimes more eco-friendly, home environments. The application of certain treatments can make ceramic tiles even more impervious to water and moisture. Some tile may help reduce the spread of certain strains of bacteria, such as E. coli and staph, without requiring the application of potentially harsh chemical detergents. Others treatments may protect against yeast, molds and fungi that can cause stains and odors and result in the degradation of tile.
Antimicrobial products inhibit the growth of microorganisms and suppress their reproduction. For example, tiles with Microban® protection employ an antimicrobial agent built into the product during the manufacturing process. When microbes touch the product surface, the agent penetrates the cell wall of the microorganism. Other tiles are treated with micrometric particles of titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is activated by sunlight or artificial light. This causes a photocatalysis process, which is responsible for the product’s antipollution and bactericidal properties. Examples of TiO2-treated tiles include Active Clean Air & Antibacterial Ceram-
ic™. Antimicrobial ceramic tile can be advantageous in rooms where sanitation and hygiene are an utmost priority. This includes not only public places, but private residences. Worktops and floors where microbes can be transfered are particularly beneficial areas to install antimicrobial tile. A potential side effect of antimicrobial tile is a reduction in reliance on harsh cleaning products. Although regular washing is recommended, residents may not need to use odoriferous or strong chemical cleaners to sanitize their homes. This helps improve indoor air quality and reduce the potential contamination of the environment

from chemical runoff. Homeowners thinking of installing antimicrobial tile in their homes should
discuss their options with a tile retailer or contractor during the planning stages.

uilding an outdoor kitchen is a significant investment that can be rewarding for years to come. It’s important to take advantage of nice days and temperate seasons as much as possible, no matter in which part of the country you live. However, with proper planning and preparation, you can fully maximize the enjoyment of your outdoor kitchen all year long, even when temperatures drop. There are ways to do it, and many homeowners are catching on. In fact, a majority of grill and smoker owners (61 percent) enjoy grilling year-round, according to the Hearth Patio and Barbecue Association. These tips and ideas for design and entertaining from Russ Faulk, chief designer and head of product at Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, can help you make the most of your outdoor kitchen throughout the cooler fall and winter seasons. Fall: Keep the grill fired up Weekends are everything in the fall. Kids are back in school, football games are in full swing and everyone is trying to extend grilling season with one last barbecue. Rather than hanging in a parking lot for the big game, throw a “home-gate” party in your outdoor kitchen. Many homeowners are outfitting their spaces with outdoor TVs and speaker systems that rival watching at popular neighborhood pubs. All you need to decide is what will be on the menu. Autumn is all about

smoky wood fires, so try capturing that atmosphere by grilling over a large wood-fired grill, such as an Argentine-style grill. You can impress your guests with all of the flavors you can only achieve with a wood fire. Remember temperatures can fluctuate from cool to hot in the fall, so make sure you have portable shade for when you want to stay cool and stowed for when you need to warm up. In terms of maintenance, sink covers offer much-needed protection against seeds, petals and falling leaves. Winter: No need to hibernate November officially kicks off the holiday season. Your holiday get-togethers can stand out from the pack by bringing outside flavors into the warm comfort of your home. The intense flavor of slow-roasted meats is the perfect pairing with wintertime. Also known as indirect grilling, food is placed in an area without fire below it and cooking is done with the grill hood closed. Add the flavor of a wood fire for “smoke roasting.” This is a perfect way to prepare a beef or pork roast for the holidays. Purpose-built smokers, such as Kalamazoo’s Smoker Cabinet that uses a gravity-fed charcoal fire for heat, are ideal for smoking the Thanksgiving turkey. This also frees up your indoor oven for other holiday dishes. Be the hero of the holiday party by surprising your guests with delicious, slow-cooked brisket or roasted ham, but keep your
outdoor grill or smoker conveniently located adjacent to your indoor kitchen and within close proximity to the back door for quick, easy access, reducing your time out in the cold. With shorter days, you’ll

need to consider lighting. Make sure you have plenty of task lighting to not only see your food on the grill, but also transport it back inside when it’s done cooking. Infrared space heaters
go a long way toward making winter grilling more comfortable. One of the last things you want is a delay for the big meal because you’re simply not warm enough to cook effectively. Instead of allowing
your outdoor kitchen to go unused during the cooler months, take steps to make it useful year-round. Find more outdoor entertaining ideas and tips at KalamazooGourmet.com.

Cost-Conscious Home Upgrades For Fall
f you’re looking for ways to improve your home but don’t have the budget for a full-scale renovation, look at upgrades that add instant value with a smaller investment. Projects that enhance existing features or add new functions to the home are smart ways to spruce up the aesthetics and improve livability without breaking the bank. In between extreme weather seasons is the perfect time to tackle home improvement projects, so this fall consider some small-scale projects that can make a big impact on your home. Revitalize worn woodwork. Nothing ages a home’s appearance fast-
er than tired, weathered woodwork on the front porch or back deck. These structures are typically major focal points of a home’s exterior, so sprucing them up can go a long way toward transforming the overall aesthetic. A fresh coat of stain or paint is a minimal investment to bring fresh life back into your entryway or backyard living space. Pull out a new kitchen look. If changing out the cabinets isn’t an option, you can still create a new look with a minimal investment. Wipe down cabinets thoroughly and apply a coat of paint to make them look their very best, then look for subtle changes that bring a wow factor,
such as new hardware. Simply changing out dated pulls for a more contemporary look in a new color can bring a new mood to the room. Clear away clutter and add some fresh accessories for a whole new look. Punch up the power. Adding function can be as valuable as aesthetics when it comes to enjoying your home to the fullest. When bad weather or other factors interrupt your power supply, a standby generator lets you run appliances such as air conditioners, heaters, refrigerators, clothes washers/dryers, lights and electronics, minimizing the inconvenience of a power outage. ed outages, a generator can even save money, preventing unexpected costs from spoiled food or hotel stays. Hooked up to a home’s existing propane or natural gas line, a standby generator system, oftentimes called a home generator, switches on by itself when power fails. Models such as Briggs & Stratton’s newly redesigned 12 kilowatt standby generator provide whole-house power in a small footprint that maintains curb appeal. Plus, the price point of standby generator systems is continuing to drop because power management systems like Symphony® II continue to get smarter. Symphony II power management, which can be included with all Briggs & Stratton generators, automatically balances the power needs of a home’s electrical loads — including high-wattage items. Therefore families get uninterrupted, whole-house power with a smaller — and, thus, more affordable — standby generator. For more information about the entire line of Briggs & Stratton standby generator systems, visit www.powernow.com. Look at new lighting. The lighting in a room has a significant impact on its overall feel: a bright, airy room exudes energy while a dimmer, soft illumination evokes a cozy impression. Changing up the lighting can completely transform a space. Use window treatments such as drapes and blinds to control natural light and lend a stylish addition to the room. Floor and table lamps are ideal
for more subtle task lighting, while overhead fixtures can make a stronger statement. Explore a new floor. Over time, the rich pile of new carpeting loses its inviting spring, and oncesharp grout lines fade and crumble. If a thorough cleaning still leaves your flooring looking drab, it may be time to explore alternatives. Replacing heavily worn carpet in high traffic areas with a more durable option such as wood or tile may not only improve the look, but also prove a smart investment as it wears better in the future. If you still enjoy the look of your tile, consider removing and replacing the grout, then sealing it to protect the finish. Don’t feel beholden to the original color; a new shade can introduce a whole new color dimension to the room. Making updates to your home is a natural part of ownership and a good way to protect and grow your investment. Fortunately, making a big difference doesn’t always have to come with a big price tag attached. Plan Ahead to Save Before embarking on a home improvement project, there are several steps a homeowner can take to manage the time and expense while making the effort run more smoothly: 1. Regardless of the type of project you’re planning, research the possibilities before you get started. From comparing prices to evaluating styles and features, knowing all your available options will help ensure you make right
choices for your needs. 2. When evaluating appliances or equipment, pay attention to variables that may affect the overall project cost. For example, installing a generator with a power management system like Symphony® II from Briggs & Stratton, can help meet your home’s backup power requirements with a smaller, more affordable generator. This can potentially knock hundreds if not thousands of dollars off a generator purchase with a little research ahead of time to find the right-size generator needed for a home. An online calculator tool at www. powernow.com can help match homeowners with the best generator for their individual needs. 3. Determine a budget, and stick to it. Be realistic and remember that a little more investment upfront may buy quality that will save money on repairs and replacements down the road. Another good rule of thumb: add at least 10 percent buffer to help cover unexpected expenses. 4. Assess whether the project is something you can tackle on your own, and whether time or ability may impede your progress. If you need to enlist help, gather estimates and check references for at least three contractors. 5. Set expectations for yourself and your family about how long the project will take. If you’re working with a contractor, get a time projection in writing, as well as a written agreement about what happens if the project runs past deadline.

How A Breakfast With Milk Can Help Lead The Way To Academic Success
s kids get ready to start a new school year, moms are also getting back into the swing of a morning routine. One thing that can’t be missed? A complete breakfast! Research shows eating breakfast helps kids concentrate and focus at school, giving moms good reason to serve up balanced nutrition before that first morning bell. This back-to-school season, start the day off strong and pair your little one’s breakfast with a glass of milk. An 8-ounce glass of milk gives kids 8 grams of high-quality protein plus other essential nutrients like calcium and vitamin D to the morning meal. Most days, finding time for a balanced breakfast
may be easier said than done. One way to help alleviate the morning rush is to make breakfast ahead of time, so it’s ready to go before sending kids off to school. These make-ahead Protein-Packed Eggs in a Nest are simple and fun to make. Served with an 8-ounce glass of milk, they make for a delicious breakfast to help start everyone’s school day off right.
