By Anya Bochman lthough the oldest members of Livingston Heritage Middle School Builders’ Club are still in the eighth grade, they participate in sufficient community volunteer work to live up to the club’s motto – “Building Leaders.” On Tuesday, Feb. 6, the youngsters partook in a monthly tradition – decorating plain brown lunch bags with colorful designs and messages. After their creations were complete, the Kiwanis Club of Livingston packed the bags with a meal and donated them to Toni’s Kitchen in Montclair. This month’s

lunch bag theme was St. Patrick’s Day, and club supervisor and Heritage Middle School English teacher Maureen Biss related that it turned into a cultural learning event, as some Chinese exchange students stopped by the classroom
where the club was working. “The children are all interested in helping,” Biss said. “The volunteering is meant to help the school, but especially the community at large.” The Builders’ Club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club
of Livingston and is the middle school version of the Key Club at Livingston High School. The club’s mission statement describes its focus as being on “building the leadership skills of kids who want to make a difference in their cont. on page 4
