“I love to hang out with my friends in the dugout and on the baseball field each spring,” he explained. “My favorite team are the New York Yankees and my favorite player is Aaron Judge.”

Just like his favorite player, Jake enjoys playing right behind first base in right field.

But for this young boy, his favorite game had to be put on hold once he was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) at age seven in February of 2012.

tor tell us that Jake had cancer was the shock of my life,” shared Jake’s father, Josh Kestler of Livingston.

After receiving this devastating news, Jake’s family and the surrounding community came together for support. It was only after a successful bone marrow

transplant with the help of Lily, Jake’s five year old sister, who was a perfect match, that Jake was pronounced cancer free at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).

Then, almost five years later, Jake was brought back to MSKCC for a checkup after com-

plaining of headaches. It was then revealed that the source of the headaches was in fact a tumor in his brain.

“I was absolutely devastated when Jake was diagnosed with brain cancer,” his father confided.

Livingston Teen Named Youngest Theater Festival Director For N.Y. Theater Festival

By Dawn M. Chiossi ivingston’s Kush Dhungana has been named the youngest Theater Festival Director for the New York Theater Festival.

The NY Theater Festival was founded in 2012 and focuses on local playwrights offering an amazing opportunity to stage their works and a chance to win cash prizes.

It is said that theater is like a fever in the blood and that creativity is a whirlwind that follows no time clock. Such is the case with Livingston’s 17 year old Dhungana. Since writing his recent off Broadway play “Rooftop” for the Annual Midtown International Theater Festival last summer, this talented teen playwright has been doing so much to set the creative world on fire. This time, Dhungana has effortlessly slipped into the role of director.

At this year’s New York Theater Festival, Dhungana was honored to have his play “A Poor Player” performed at the Hudson Guild Theater in New York on Jan. 11, 12, and 14. The play explores the life of a struggling actress who grapples with professional and personal conflicts, and Dhungana shares that he came up with the idea of submitting his script to the New York

Theater Festival when someone who saw his previous play “Rooftop,” suggested it to him.

“I wasn’t sure about producing another off Broadway show, but what drew me to this festival was that it provided a much bigger venue and more creative freedom,” he says. “Because there were more resources provided at this festival, I wanted to make a bigger, grander show.”

When asked how he became interested in directing, Dhungana discloses, “Whenever I write stories, I usually have a clear vision as to how they should be executed.

So when my script was selected (by the festival), I sent them an entire set of notes describing what I would do as director, including specific stage directions, casting decisions, and lighting cues. They were impressed enough to choose me as director for the show.”

Directors are often considered visionaries, collaborating with every part of the production, orchestrating it, making sure it all goes smoothly. Dhungana is both enthusiastic and realistic regarding this hands-on position.

“I love directing, but it’s very hard especially for a theater show,” he says. “You are preparing for a live show and can’t afford

to make any mistakes.”

So what was the response like to having a 17 year old director at the helm? Despite his initial nerves, Dhungana has nothing but good things to say about that.

“My actors were amazing, extremely professional, not at all weirded out by the fact that they were all older than me,” he says. “I have been extremely lucky to work with such great actors.”

He credits his interpersonal style of directing as an asset to his production. continued on page 12

Thankfully, the neurosurgery team at MSKCC performed an operation on Jake to remove the tumor. It was a complete success and since then Jake has remained cancer free.

Sadly, the ordeal that the Kestlers went through is not an isolated incident, nor do all such stories have happy endings. Across the United States, more than 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year and remains the number one cause of death by disease in children.

Together with family friend Steven Arsht of Livingston, the Kestlers are determined to make a difference against pediatric cancer.

“Steven Arsht, is the architect of Knock Cancer Out of the Park,” Josh Kestler explained.

“He approached us with the idea prior to last year’s little league season. Jake and I both AL PROFESSIOTN CARPE CLEANING

thought it was a great idea and Steven made it happen.”

Started in 2017 for the purpose of increasing pediatric cancer awareness and raising money for pediatric cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), Knock Cancer out of the Park has been a huge success among the community. In addition to voluntary donations from sponsors, for every home run hit in Livingston’s hometown little league, $100 is donated to MSKCC. Last year, the non-profit raised almost $16,000 in charitable funds towards pediatric cancer research.

“Our largest donation came from Party City, which was $6,000. It covered all of the home runs (60) hit in the Major League Division of the Livingston Little League,” Josh Kestler proudly shared. “I would also note that many people from the Livingston and surrounding

communities supported the campaign and donated to help us reach our goals.”

As for future plans, Kestler and Arsht have a big league vision for this non-profit.

“My hope is that we can connect with people all over the country and this could evolve over time into a national event, much like Cycle for Survival,” Arsht explained. “We are reaching out to Little League baseball and softball to see if

the organization may adopt our program on a national level or consider incorporating it into the Little League World Series in some way.”

A web page for Team Jake has been set up at MSKCC to support our “Knock Cancer out of the Park” campaign. One hundred percent of all donations will be transferred directly through this link towards pediatric cancer research.

One-Stop Event Will Connect Homeless Clients With Social Service Programs And Services

ssex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. will join with more than 65 community and faith-based organizations to present the 12th Annual Essex County Project Homeless Connect Day on Thursday, March 22, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Essex County Branch Brook Park Roller Skating Facility in Newark. This all-day event will provide homeless residents with the opportunity to learn about available social services and health-related programs in a convenient, centralized location.

“Project Homeless Connect Day will raise awareness about the programs and services that are available to help our homeless residents,” said DiVincenzo. The roller skating rink will be transformed into a one-stop

information center where clients can connect with a variety of agencies to receive essential services, he said.

Project Homeless Connect Day is a collaborative effort between the county and more than 65 community and faithbased organizations. Homeless residents visiting the Essex County Branch Brook Park Roller Rink will receive a nutritious meal and have access to information about available programs and services specifically geared for homeless clients. Among the services being offered are: public assistance, health screenings, mental health services, emergency services, educational services, veterans’ services, employment services and free haircuts.

Livingston Library Makes Time For Makers Day

By Anya Bochman o those unfamiliar with the term “maker culture,” the phrase may be ambiguous or confusing at first.

New Jersey Makers Day, an annual statewide celebration taking place in March, helps clarify the concept with designs and activities appearing in libraries, schools, museums, colleges and commercial “makerspaces.” According to the initiative’s website, the primary goal is “enhancing community engagement and facilitating connections between New Jersey residents.”

This mission is achieved by providing a time and place to showcase projects that range from robotics to yarnbombing - and to give credit to creators and tinkerers. The values of the day are strongly associated with STEM-based learning.

culture” as a concept of creating and learning.

“Maker culture is about creativity and discovery, tinkering and learning new things in the process,” Emery said. “It’s the focus of our activities on Saturday, learning through creation.”

Livingston Library was planning its third annual Makers Day on Saturday, March 10, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Those attending expected to witness a robotics demonstration from two local robotics clubs, as well as interactive activities and crafts with LEGOs, electrical circuits and the toy product Slime. Attendance was free with no sign-up required.

In addition, the library will showcase its “Library of Things,” a collection of portable makerspace kits, also known as the “Ready, Set, Create!” toolkits and other borrowable items such as mobile hotspots

Livingston Marches On With New Manager To Lead Town’s Day To Day Operations

By Lisa McNamara fter an extensive search, the Township of Livingston selected Barry Lewis as its new township manager.

Livingston Mayor Edward Meinhardt says, “We know we got it 100 percent correct” by hiring Lewis, who started March 1.

According to Meinhardt, township manager is one of the most important positions in a town and entails a tremendous amount of dedication and hard work, so it was important for the town council to get it right.

Lewis “was overwhelmingly enticing. He comes to us highly recommended with glowing past job performance and a multitude of different backgrounds,” adds Meinhardt.

Lewis recently served as village administrator for South

Orange and has considerable experience serving as township manager and/or administrator for Spring Lake, Mountain Lakes and Mine Hill. In addition, he has CFO experience and started his career as a land use attorney.

“That legal background, for any town, is key,” says Meinhardt.

Township manager “really runs all the day-to-day operations for the town of Livingston.” All department heads report directly to him, and he will oversee 275 employees as well.

Filling the position of township manager didn’t come without any challenges. In November 2016, the township “parted ways” with Michele Mead and hired Greg Bonin to take over in August 2017; however, after seven days on the

job, “Greg decided it wasn’t the job for him,” says Meinhardt.

Fortunately for Livingston, Russ Jones, deputy township manager for Livingston and town employee for more than 45 years, was promoted to acting manager to fill the vacancy after Mead’s departure and again after Bonin’s sudden exit.

Discover Books And So Much Inside Thomas Edison’s Library

By Steve Sears hen visiting the Thomas Edison National Historic Site in West Orange, one may “find” Thomas Edison himself inside his three-story library, which doubled as his office and research center in Building #5.

Theresa Jung, assistant superintendent at the site, explains, “It is rare to find a site that still has, not only the historic buildings but also the original furnishings that were in those rooms. It almost looks like Thomas Edison might walk around the corner and join the tour.”

Both Edison and his staff used the library regularly for 44 years. Usually the first room a visitor sees when they enter the main laboratory building, there’s too much to absorb during one visit. On the shelves are books and journals from around the world on scientific and technical topics, and on display are artifacts that will keep those with varied interests busy during a self-guided tour.

About 10,000 books populate the library, and as far as Jung knows, there is evidence that they used something like the Dewey Decimal System to keep books in order. And if that first number boggles the

mind, consider this about the entirety of the Thomas Edison National Historic Site: there are 400,000 artifacts in the museum collection and five million documents in the archives; not all are on display; many are preserved in storage areas.

A few noteworthy things, among so many, wife Mina Edison sent a cot from their nearby Glenmont home in Llewelyn Park for her husband to nap on since he often worked many hours. It’s nestled between a set of bookshelves. Near the library’s third floor, a huge clock read 3:26, the hour and minute hands ceasing movement when Edison breathed his last at age 84 on Oct. 18, 1931. No explanation for the mysterious clock stoppage has ever been found.

Hanging on shelving near the entrance are the pictures of the five United States Presidents in office during a good portion of the years the plant was in operation: Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover. It is not known if a president ever visited while in office, but the site has photographs of Franklin D. Roosevelt circa 1920 and Herbert Hoover from 1928 visiting the West Orange laboratory, perhaps

during campaign stops.

The inventor’s desk, which was locked by his son Charles on the day of his death, but reopened by his wife in 1947 during the celebration of the great man’s 100th birthday, is also on view, its contents well continued on page 18

Youngest Theater Festival Director... continued from page 2 “One specific thing I do as director is to really make sure that my actors are comfortable with the script, the lines,” he says. “You can tell when an actor is forcing a reaction or a line so we’ll improv in between scenes or try different versions of the same scene to get them comfortable, in rhythm. I have a very vocal relationship with my actors to the point that we’re not afraid to voice any opinions we have. I think that made the play feel so real, so fluid.”

The response for his play has been overwhelmingly positive. “It has been great,” says Dhungana. From family and friends to online reviews from the Time Square Chronicles, Dhungana’s play was a standout.

“I am extremely honored for being named the youngest director in the New York Theater Festival history,” he says. “I re-

ally just aimed to craft a great show. So to earn this achievement in the process is really unexpected. It means a lot to me.”

Other creative projects of Dhungana’s include writing and directing a film, recording music for an upcoming mixtape, and creating and organizing a brand new statewide film festival called NJ Visionaries Film Festival, showcasing New Jersey’s talented young artists.

Additionally, Dhungana has been awarded the Scholastic Gold Medal and a $10,000 scholarship from one of the nation’s most prestigious largest writing competitions, The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

“I really hope to just keep creating projects that are important to me, and find ways to connect with larger and larger audiences,” he says. “As long as I am doing the things I love, things will fall into place.”

Livingston P.D. Hosts Free Pizza With A Cop

By Henry M. Holden n March 3, the Livingston Police Department invited Livingston residents, young and old to join the department for free pizza, meet some costumed cartoon characters and fun.

“Pizza with a cop evolved out of a program called Coffee with a Cop” initiative, said Officer Joy Klapal, of the Livingston Police Department.

Coffee with a Cop is a nationwide program started in Hawthorne, California, in 2011. The event is held in all 50 states, Europe and Asia.

“Coffee with a cop was very successful but our thinking was we wanted to attract our young people,” said Klapal. “So, back in October we tried doing ice cream with a cop. We are trying to bring in more families with children because obviously when we have coffee with a cop we’re not really getting kids in. We wanted to do an activity that would interact with the kids as well.

“The ice cream with a cop was a huge success,” he said. “We had an ice cream truck come to headquarters, and we gave out about 200 ice creams. Two hundred ice creams with the chill of October in the Same-day delivery.

“When we had ice cream with a cop we had about 100 children show up,” said Klapal. “It was a good turnout. We did it on Friday, October 13, so we had a Halloween theme, and we told the kids they could come in costumes, and the children’s librarian read Halloween stories. I gave away all my Halloween safety stuff, like glow sticks, etc. We had a couple of patrol cars in the driveway with the lights going.

The kids could sit in them, and the parents could take pictures. It was a fun event.

“Pizza with a cop is the same kind of spin,” said Klapal. “We are trying to attract some younger families. We had a story time from 2:30 p.m.to 3 p.m., with Mrs. Choi from the Livingston Public Library, one of the kid’s librarians. We also had some special guests Geoffrey the Giraffe from Toys R Us. We were able to keep that a secret until the day of the event. They were costumed characters which the kids all like. We also had McGruff the Crime Dog make an appearance.

Atlantic Ambulance Presents Child Safety Seat Inspection Events

By Kerry Breen n February 22, Atlantic Ambulance paired with Safe Kids Worldwide for a free, publicly-available car seat inspection. The program, known as Buckle Up, focuses on safety in and around cars.

According to Sarah Daplyn, an Atlantic Training Center coordinator, these events are held several times throughout the year in various locations. The event included certified child passenger safety technicians on-site, who were able to help parents properly install their children’s car seats.

“We typically hold our inspection events once every other month at the Atlantic Ambulance Air One helicopter base located at 65 Love Lane in Netcong, NJ,” said Daplyn. “Safe Kids holds these types of events all the time in various locations throughout the state.”

According to a flyer advertising the event, three out of four car seats are not used correctly. According to the Safe Kids Worldwide website, one million children around the world die of unintentional injuries each year, and millions more are injured; car safety is the greatest cause of preventable deaths and injuries to children

both nationally and globally.

“Our sponsored programs and initiatives combine education, awareness, environmental changes, and safety device distribution to get communities more involved in child safety and keep families and children safer,” as state on the site.

“We work together with communities in the United States and partners around the world to implement programs that will address the leading causes of injury and injury-related death.”

According to the website, similar child car seat events are held throughout the country, not just within the state of New Jersey. Most of the events are open to the public, and can be found in locations such as General Motors dealerships, hospitals, community centers and shopping centers.

The Safe Kids company also has more than 125 Mobile Car Seat Checkup Vans operating across the United States. These vans are designed to turn “any parking lot into a full-service child restraint safety event site,” and almost every state has at least one van operating.

Throughout the United States, 500 permanent child passenger safety inspection

stations are operated, with regular times and dates available for interested parents and caregivers.

Since the Buckle Up program was established in 1997 during a partnership with General Motors Foundation, the program has grown to include four main components.

The components included child passenger safety, which addresses car seats, booster seats and seat belts; heatstroke awareness and prevention with a campaign called Never Leave Your Child Alone in a Car; public education on driveway and parking lot injuries known as “frontovers” and “backovers,” which includes another program called Spot the Tot; and “Getting Ready to Drive,” which covers passenger education for preteens and teens before they drive and includes a program called Countdown2Drive, which teaches preteen and young teens about safe driving before they get behind the wheel.

The program also works as public policy advocates helping states strengthen their laws regarding child safety in vehicles and drunk driving.

Local Soccer Coach Raises Funds To Equip Colombian Youth With Soccer Gear And Skills For Better Life

By Cheryl Conway s a soccer player since he was four and coach for the past decade, 26year old Sebastian Castillo-Giraldo’s current goal is to pay it forward and help youth from his native country.

Castillo-Giraldo of Wharton has started a Go Fund Me page to purchase training equipment and provide soccer clinics to hundreds of inner city children of Colombia. The children he aims to reach live in the city of Medellin as well as Supia, Caldas, the town he was born.

He plans to travel in May for ten days, May 13-May 23, with three of his soccer students and a friend, Marc Reynolds of Succasunna, a photographer/filmmaker who will be documenting the trip.

“It’s time I pay it forward to those who are less fortunate and give approximately 300 kids an opportunity to use soccer as a vehicle to improve their lives,” Castillo-Giraldo states on his Go Fund Me site. “The game has allowed me to attend college and has shaped me to be the human I am today.”

Castillo-Giraldo has been a soccer coach in Mt. Olive, in its camps and premier soccer program; ran the select soccer camps at Morris Hills now called Morris County Summer Select; and has been the first assistant coach for the men’s soccer team at CCM since 2017.

Through soccer, “you learn discipline, hard work, determination and team work,” says Castillo-Giraldo, teaching assistant and graduate research assistant at Monmouth University. “Those kids need it,” he says about the children in Colombia, “to help them move up in the ladder of life.

“Colombia is a third world country; soccer is a tool to avoid falling into drug use and alcoholism,” he continues on the Go Fund Me page. “It’s a beacon of hope as well as a stimulator to dream big and achieve success in life.

currently writing his master’s thesis on “How Soccer Explains the World.”

It was in the first week of December 2017 when Castillo-Giraldo started his Go Fund Me page to help youth in Colombia.

A family friend who works for the government in Colombia has identified and connected Castillo-Giraldo with youth teams most in need.

Mt. Olive Soccer Club “donated a plethora of new gear,” says Castillo-Giraldo. About 90 percent of its donations are brand new and include uniforms, soccer socks, shorts, sweats, sweaters and jerseys.

Kinnelon High School donated some gear as well.

Most needed now is the financial support, he says, as his goal is to purchase 200 brand new Adidas balls that cost $3,000.

“I can’t have soccer clinics unless I have balls for the kids,” he says. “Balls are really expensive.” The ones he plans to provide are expected to last three to five years and are “ideal for their practices and their games,” he says.

Funds will also cover costs for cones and ladders as well as shipping boxes of equipment; soccer clinics for kids with proper training skills; followed my mini-talks to discuss “the power of soccer.”

His plan is to help 20 youth teams with proper equipment and gear. He estimates that the boys and girls will be between the ages of 8 and 15.

“I’ll be running clinic and drills,” he says, with two to three practices daily.

While cycling is popular in Colombia too, Castillo-Giraldo says the “predominant sport in Colombia is soccer. It’s a passion you learn to love and you hold dear to you.

The whole country plays and the whole country watches them, the Colombia National Team, national pride. Even with all the unrest, when our country was being torn to pieces,” he explains how soccer provides a sense of pride “that brings the whole country together.”

He now wants to share his love for soccer.

“When I was a little kid playing in Colombia, I had great coaches that didn’t know me,” he says. “I think it’s only right to share my knowledge of soccer with those kids so they can move forward. Everyone in my family has played soccer, like it’s in my blood, in my DNA. “Race doesn’t matter, class doesn’t matter, religion doesn’t matter. Reynolds, who met Castillo-Giraldo about seven years ago when he became his eldest son’s soccer coach of Villa at NJ Dynamo, couldn’t agree more and looks forward to the trip.

“I love the game of soccer; I have three sons who play,” says Reynolds. “I believe soccer should be accessible to everyone regardless of income or anything else. I know the happiness it brings and I feel everyone deserves that.”

With plans to video their trip, Reynolds says “it’s about me telling a story. This to me is a story worth telling. It’s about

soccer, but it’s more about humanity and giving back. I hope to capture the happiness we bring to the kids that we meet.

I also want to capture Sebastian’s big/generous heart.”

Donations are still being collected through May 1.

Luckily, it was spaced over the two-hour time period and we did not exceed the 75-person limit for the party room. We thought about holding it at headquarters but trying to coordinate the delivery of pizzas was just too much.

And by having it at the establishment if we started to run low on pizzas they could just cook up some more.

Klapal says they plan on continuing to have the coffee with a cop so that adults can ask serious questions, without having kids running around.

“Once the weather turns warmer we’re going to do the ice cream with a cop again,” he said.

he Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey in Florham Park launches its 56th season with its 2018 Annual Gala on Saturday, April 7, and will present its rarely bestowed Mighty Quill Award to longtime Board member Richard B. McGlynn at the annual event.

ssex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr., hosted the 15th Annual African American History Month Celebration at the Essex County Hall of Records on Feb. 28.

During the ceremony, the executive presented the Essex County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Award to the Honorable Ras J. Baraka, mayor of Newark, and the Coretta Scott King Leadership Award to Jacqueline Jones, deputy director of the Essex County Office of Human Resources. Both honorees have made significant contributions to the community and their dedication truly captures the dignity and determination of the King family.

“African American History Month is a special time of the year when we highlight the many contributions and achievements African Americans have made to our culture, economy and daily lives throughout our history,” DiVincenzo said. “Mayor Baraka has dedicated his life to giving back to the community, first as an educator and principal in the Newark Public Schools and now as Mayor of the state’s largest city and the positive impact he is having can easily be seen.
