What Does It Mean to be an American?

By Connie Schultz t was a wonderful birthday dinner, the kind we friends have come to expect whenever we arrive to celebrate the person who is about to blow out the candles. We leave feeling lucky to be alive, every last one of us.

This dinner, however, took an interesting turn after the guest of honor broke character and raised her hand to silence us. This is not her practice.

She had a question. What does it mean, to each of us, to be an American?

We were about a dozen women, all of us over 50, sitting around her dining room table in the city of Cleveland. Our abrupt silence was unusual, not counting the times we have bowed our heads together in prayer, ever so briefly. We are used to one another and the laughter we bring to any room in which we are gathered. And yet here we were, suddenly quiet and perhaps a bit sullen as we mulled the issue at hand.

Who are we now, as Americans?

Implicit in the question is the acknowledgment that we are no longer who we used to be. If age has anything to do with it, it›s only in the depth and breadth of our experience, which we can›t ignore.

We›ve never lived in a time such as this.

Watergate feels so manageable now, a scary diagnosis with a positive outcome.

Life with Donald Trump is triage, and no one has the necessary training to predict our odds.

One by one, we shared our thoughts.

Each of us has our own definitions of citizenship and patriotism, but a universal theme unspooled.

We feel differently about America, and our role in it.

We are not an insulated group. Four in attendance are members of the LGBTQ community, with long memories of lives,

We were reminded of that unfortunate fact this week when President Trump withdrew an apparently secret invitation to the Taliban to visit Camp David. The Taliban was, is and will remain an Islamic terror group; it has continuously sought the murder of American soldiers and citizens for two decades. Why would the Trump administration think it a good idea to sign an agreement with radicals who seek to overthrow the administration of Afghanistan, support terrorism and despise the United States?

Do members of the administration truly believe that any agreement signed by the Taliban will be binding?

The answer, of course, is no. That›s why the talks fell apart, according to The New York Times -- a response from inside the administration in the aftermath of a terror attack on American soldiers this week, a recognition of the obvious.

continued from page 4 These small snapshots don›t begin to describe all the living we had done before we sat down at that table at that moment. Every woman has her stories, and isn›t it a shame not everyone knows that?

Defining ourselves as Americans requires a distancing from those who think their residency-at-birth was an act of divine intervention. We have no control over where we are born, and to credit God for our geography is to cast doubt on his motives for everyone else. We are lucky, perhaps, but not the chosen.

That evening, we couldn›t talk about being Americans without veering into a discussion about what it means to be a patriot. Knowing the words to the Pledge of Allegiance and flying an American flag on Independence Day is showmanship, not stewardship.

If we define activism as a refusal to sit on the sidelines,

then so many women of my generation have become activists in ways they never thought they would be. They refuse to be invisible when so many want us to believe our time has passed. They speak up at family gatherings and refuse to apologize for the awkward silence. They write letters to editors and share their views on social media, and show up for one another when any one of them is under attack.

One of my closest friends, who has spent much of her life keeping the peace, now calls her Republican U.S. senator almost daily to demand that he stand up to Trump›s racism and violent rhetoric. She provides her name and address, and is never insulting or rude. When a live voice answers the phone, she assures the staffer that her outrage is directed at the senator because he is the one selected to serve the American people, and he is letting his country down.

On that night, at that birthday dinner, we talked about

all of this, and so much more, filled with hope no matter what. That›s what happens when women gather. We draw strength from one another, and then we go back out into the world, for the world.

Isn’t it a shame not everyone knows that?

All of which means that American troops are likely to remain in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future. Few politicians will be bold enough to simply state that truth. After all, when John McCain said as much in 2008, he was roundly mocked by Barack Obama -- the same Obama who escalated the war in Afghanistan and retained thousands of troops there, despite promising withdrawal repeatedly. But our politicians should be brave enough to recognize that a weaker America on the world stage means a more vulnerable America at home. If we didn›t learn that lesson on 9/11,

we›re bound to repeat it.

Livingston High Grad Wins 3rd in INT Tech Competition

A

By Jon Cronin Livingston High School student won third place in an international clean technology competition and was honored by the mayor this summer.

Steven Rosenstark, 18, has had an incredible summer. Starting with his graduation from high school to winning third place at the international Spellman HV Clean Tech Competition where he was chosen from 500 teams of students from over 40 countries and ending with a citation from the mayor.

“The day I won was chaotic to say the least,” Rosenstark said.

On July 17, he woke up early and left a summer music program at The Mason Gross School of The Arts at Rutgers University, to go to the competition at the historic Great Hall of the Cooper Union in Manhattan.

Rosenstark spent the day admiring and talking with his competitor and then presenting his work to the judges.

After seeing presentations from all 20 finalists had been made, the judges made

their decision and the top three were called.

“I was the first person called to the stage during the awards ceremony, which was a little bit jarring and nerve-racking, but I got through it.”

His family was there but his father was with him throughout the competition. “It

felt a bit surreal receiving the award,” Rosenstark noted.

It was a culmination of three years of work. Rosenstark spent hours in the lab during an internship at the New Jersey Institute of Technology just observing how his continued on page 8

After the ceremony, as he and his dad carried equipment back to the car. It was then that Rosenstark realized it was all over.

Tomorrow he would be going back to the music program, to a different world where no one knew this had even occurred.

“I will remember that day forever nonetheless,” he said.

For Rosenstark, it all started at the end of his freshman year when he applied for the three-year science research program.

“I explored many different fields before settling on water purification,” Rosenstark said.

He found it fascinating as water is the seed of all life and believes, “its accessibility and consumption should continue to be explored at a high level for as long as technology continues to progress.”

He added, “I’ve always been interested in science and technology, particularly with applications of electricity. Electricity is so abstract in the ways it behaves and what it can do, I like to say that it's the closest thing humanity will ever get to "magic".

Rosenstark explained that his project applied an electric current to water in order to

break down organic components. His system eliminated organic dye-pollutants, then used a membrane that conducts electricity in order to run a current through the water.

A couple of weeks after the competition, Rosenstark’s parents were phoned by the Livingston Town Council. They were told that the mayor and the council would like to give him a Citation of Honor on July 27 for his accomplishment at the competition.

“The council members were very impressed by my achievement, and I hope that this sort of support continues to permeate the Livingston Public Schools long after I am gone,” Rosenstark said.

This fall, Rosenstark began his first semester at Rutgers University. Like many freshmen, he doesn’t know what he wants to major in yet, but he is considering economics. One thing he knows for sure, it will not be science. After three years of hard science research, “I couldn't really see myself pursuing them for the rest of my life,” he said.

Still he doesn’t regret a moment of what he did, “I encourage anyone seeking to expand their horizons to consider becoming involved in research, at any level and in any field.”

VFW: Record Year of Activities

nding June 30, the Livingston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2856 and the Auxiliary over 60 events: visiting Veterans Hospitals, attending ceremonies, and teaching in schools. Also, involved in these many activities were the American Legion Post 201 and Jewish War Veterans Post 740.

As members of our Veterans Organizations, we are motivated and inspired by our meaningful mission of promoting Patriotism and helping fellow veterans in need.

The VFW went to Lyons Veterans Hospital to give out coffee and donuts each month; the Auxiliary also went monthly to play Bingo and to give out pizza and prizes.

Four times over the year, the Auxiliary (Vinnie Wolfe and Toni Bucca) made Dinner for the East Orange Veterans Hospital patients at our post.

The veterans went to six grammar schools to talk to the students. At LHS, a “Silent Service” ceremony to honor Livingston’s War Dead was performed. The same ceremony was performed at the Livingston Old Guard.

Four Vietnam classes were taught at West Orange High School.

Other activities included doing six ceremonies (Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day) at the local Nursing Homes.

Ceremonies during the year include the following: Flag Day, Independence Day, Patriot’s Day, Loyalty Day, Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day, Vietnam Day, and Pearl Harbor Day and Four Chaplain’s Day (2). On Memorial Day weekend the veterans went to two churches (Presbyterian Church and St. Raphael’s Church). On Veteran’s Day weekend we have a service at Temple Beth Shalom. There was a Veteran’s Day luncheon and ceremony at LSYC. Since 1950, after our Memorial Day Ceremony at the War Memorial Park, we have our Parade.

Finally in the last nine months we have been assisting West Orange Armory families who have someone deployed to the Middle East.

First Library Will Help Build Libraries of Babies

By: Michele DiPasquale o some, a library may be a thing of the past; but in fact, libraries are currently visited much more frequently than one might think. And public libraries can still proclaim that they are not only crucial to the populace for offering the enjoyment of reading for free, but for the very relevant and contemporary services they provide. In fact, a recent survey showed that, since 2016, 53% of Millennials say they used a library at least twice in any given year, and that number is actually higher when comparing it to 45% of Gen Xers and 43% of Baby Boomers who were simultaneously polled.

So even in today’s online world, the public library is still absolutely in demand.

There are public libraries for children, adolescents, teens, and adults, but the

very first library for your very young child, is, in fact, First Library® of Morristown. At First Library new mothers and parents can borrow books and other materials, make use of reference collections, enjoy computer services, and encourage early literacy and the joy of reading.

“The idea to start First Library® came to me after my friend, Diane, had her first child. I wanted to give my love of reading to her and her newborn, so I sent her some books to read to her baby son, Lubin. Diane later explained that she was having a hard time finding English-language children’s books to read to him and that my books were the perfect gift for a new first-time mother (from the United States living in France).

So I began sending her a new children’s book every month - many were child-

hood favorites of my own children. Diane would call or write to say how she, and later her son, happily anticipated the arrival of their monthly book and the joy they received reading it together, and how they both looked forward to reading time,” shared Catherine Tinger Goldberg, founder and director of First Library®.

She felt that if a book could bring so much happiness, joy, and comfort to just one child, how much could it bring to multiple children? It was then that she decided to create First Library®. By taking a cue from Dolly Parton and her Imagination Library program, Ms. Tinger Goldberg followed Ms. Parton’s idea.

The Imagination Library was created in 1995 for inneed children in Ms. Parton’s native Tennessee. The purpose was and is for each

child, regardless of gender, race, or income, to register at the Imagination Library program and receive a free book each month until the age of five, paid for by Ms. Parton’s Dollywood Foundation®. While it began for children in need in Tennessee, Ms. Parton, by the year 2000, allowed and promoted the replication of the program to other states.

In order to promote local library patronage, First Library® became more than a free monthly book program. Ms. Tinger Goldberg devised a curriculum for first-time mothers in need that was tailored to their and their firstborn child's special circumstances. First Library® was developed for first-time mothers and their child’s individual needs and wants. First Library offers the newborn children of first-time mothers, regardless of gender, race, or income, up to 60 free, brand new, age-appropriate books, until the child is the age of five, at no cost or financial obligation to their families. Books are mailed monthly to the child’s home.

At First Library there’s also a story hour, craft time, educational presentations, summer reading programs, and family-oriented events are held frequently.

The First Library® program offers first-time mothers, the majority in need, additional free books during their child’s first three years of life through various free reading-related activities (beyond the First Library’s program daily reading and monthly library visits) to shop quarterly for free gifts at the online book store, More First Library® Shop.

“All we ask is that parents read to their child daily and maintain regular library patronage,” Ms. Tinger Goldberg explained.

“Essentially we are a free book program but sometimes more than a book a month is necessary to bring the importance of regular reading and books into a home. For children born under the poverty level there are new educational toys and clothing available for the parents,” Ms. Tinger Goldberg said.

“I feel it is so important for children to be read to early and consistently. Children should have a firm foundation for a lifetime love of reading, respect for literature, and an appreciation for all things the library has to offer. I hope I am

achieving these goals with First Library®,” Ms. Tinger Goldberg explained.

Because First Library is in five counties and growing throughout the State of New Jersey, aside from receptions at their offices, they rely on individual community members and Community Actions teams to spread the word about First Library’s mission and fundraising efforts. They do accept monetary donations on behalf of the donor’s community through Classy. org. First Library is also an approved charity of the AmazonSmile program.

“What parents and other community members are starting to realize is that if we help all children, whether they are less fortunate or not, learn to read early and on a consistent basis, we are helping everyone in their class, school, and community,” she shared.

LifeTown Comes to Livingston

By Henry M. Holden ost of us go to the supermarket, the mall, and handle money, in a routine way, without a second thought.

But not everybody has this freedom to move about.

For children and teens with special needs, these routine trips are sometimes challenging, intimidating, and scary, but for some special needs’ children that is about to change.

“LifeTown has been a decade-long project created by Friendship Circle, a non-profit organization which provides children and teens with special needs with real-life learning experiences while offering support to their families,” said Rabbi Zalman Grossbaum, executive director of Friendship Circle.

Rabbi Grossbaum points out that while Friendship Circle offers Judaic programming, LifeTown is a separate entity with no religious affiliation.

LifeTown is taking a new approach to the traditional downtown shopping areas carving out a replica of a small town shopping mall in a 53,000 square-foot repurposed vacant factory.

“Every square inch of this building has a meaning and purpose,” said Rabbi Grossbaum. “This building is maximized in many ways We arrange it so that everyone has an opportunity to be involved in a meaningful way.

The complex took over 10 years to build and cost $18.5 million and was financed through partnerships and donations.

LifeTown’s focal point is “Life Village,” a simulated Main Street that will help prepare those with special needs for independent living.

side community can interact and learn from each other,” said Rabbi Grossbaum.

Volunteers play the role of shopkeepers and help teach the students about shopping, budgeting and how money is used. Teens can buy food at the grocery store, get a manicure at the salon or go to a movie. If their money runs low, some of the teens have taken on jobs as “police officers” and cashiers. Part of LifeTown is a real bank where the children and teens can take out real money and use it at 15 different store fronts including a movie theater, florist and salon.

“What we really want is the interaction between the larger community and the special needs community, so that everyone is learning from each other,” Rabbi Grossbaum said.

“We have a fully functioning medical center here, but we won’t be practicing medicine, we’ll be practicing practicing medicine.”

The children and teens who have sensory issues can be intimidated by spaces such as a doctor’s or the dentist’s office. Actual medical professionals run the dentist and doctor’s office.

Here students can become familiar with the instruments they might encounter, calming their nerves for when they have a real check-up.

“We’ll have medical students come here as well,”

said Rabbi Grossbaum, “because they will be the ones interacting with these children and teens in becoming comfortable.”

“It’s all about giving them meaningful experiences, teaching them life skills and hopefully doing a project they can go home with,” Rabbi Grossbaum said.

“Our distinctive approach of pairing participants with teen volunteers, motivates, inspires and enriches everyone involved.

At the heart of all Friendship Circle programming is the belief that every individual can be a productive member of the community and benefit from inclusive programming.”

“Our programs are based on hundreds of teen and adult volunteers. The students can learn and experience life skills and job training all in the safety of this environment and then they can go out in the real world and apply the skills they have learned.”

“Five years from now, if everyone who comes to LifeTown considers it a success for individuals with special needs, where everybody feels welcome and can celebrate life together and to learn from each other and given an opportunity to blossom, then we will have been successful,” said Rabbi Grossbaum.

One Man Can Make a Difference in Many Lives

M

ichael Kambourakis, the owner of Terzako Furs on Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell recently spoke at the United Nations. He was invited as a humanitarian and discussed his work in the Dominican Republic with the help of private funding. For many years Mike was concerned about a small area that had been severely damaged due to a hurricane. He told the United Nations how he worked to build a clinic in the Dominican Republic by raising money and actually being almost the general contractor on the job. After the Clinic was built, he was responsible for raising the funds needed to build medical housing on the premises to allow doctors from the United States availability to go down to the clinic and take care of patients for brief periods of time.

An important part of the

presentation was how one can accomplish more and faster privately, rather than going through time prolonged by federal government approvals. In 5 years time, the clinic and dorms were completed. Mike’s fellow Rotarians helped with the fundraising and putting the finishing touches on the latest addition, an outdoor dining facility. The clinic has been in operation since its grand opening in November 2017. Many diabetes missions have taken place and the dental office is now complete.

This whole project started when Mike heard about the lack of clean water, school supplies and many other necessities in the Dominican Republic. He went there to see firsthand about the conditions. He decided he needed to help. That was the beginning of a labor of love which he continues and

envisions even more. He is amazing and proves that one man can make a difference in many lives.

Mike started this in a small way and began to collect items that he shipped or personally brought to the community. On his numerous trips to the Dominican Republic his luggage consisted of school supplies, clothing, tooth brushes, and medical supplies. He collected items from his clients, businesses in the area and numerous other places and shipped them personally to aid the people of the Dominican Republic. Since the nearest clinic for medical care was very far away, Mike came up with the idea to build a clinic. Mike is truly an inspiration.

The United Nations heard about his unbelievable work, and asked him to speak there to inspire other individuals on how they can do

their own projects to help people who are in dire need of the basic things in life.

Hauntings Around the Area for Halloween

By Elsie Walker alloween will soon be here. Many times on Halloween, or around camp fires, stories of ghosts; strange, creepy or haunted places; and recollections of strange occurrences are shared. Some people pass stories on from generation to generation until they become legend. However, others, like members of the New Jersey Ghost Hunters Society (NJGHS), investigate strange occurrences to see if there is a paranormal presence involved. Recently, people from around the coverage area shared stories and sightings of local ghosts, rumors of haunted locations, and experiences with the paranormal.

Members of the online, “You Know You’re From Roxbury Township….” group recalled ghost tales and scary sights. One popular ghost story was the Hooker Man. It is about a ghost seen by the Succasunna railroad tracks. “The Hooker Man lost his hand in some freak train accident, and now searches for it with a lantern,” shared Mike Stark, Roxbury. However, it appears the Hooker Man has not only been seen in Roxbury, but Netcong, Flanders, Chester, and Long Valley also lay claim to the legend.

Cheryl McClung, a former area resident,

who now lives in Georgia, shared, “At night, people see his [the Hooker Man’s] lantern bouncing along the tracks in Flanders on the west side of [Route} 206.

Dawn Traetta Hair, of Florida, another former Roxbury resident, remembers the stories of the former location of the Church of the Mystic Light in Flanders. The building is closed, but there had been claims that witches had hung chickens and have had seances there. People still stop by it, out of curiosity, if not scared away.

Kim Howell Candore shared that there have been ghost sightings at her childhood home, “I was raised at 11 Meeker Street [in] Succasunna, next to the cemetery. There has been many spottings of two men in Civil War uniforms smoking, sitting on a tree stump in front of our old house,” said Candore, who now lives in Tennessee. Candore remembers that the two churches on Main Street, adjacent to the cemetery, used to be a military hospital.

Also shared, was that Roxbury has its very own “haunted house” in the form of the Halloween House, a tremendous display put on by the Heard family in Roxbury.

The society’s mission statement is “To search out definitive proof of life beyond the grave. To provide paranormal investigations to those who request them, free of charge. To train those individuals, who so desire and become members of the NJGHS, in the protocols of professional, ethical and scientific paranormal investigating..” L’aura Hladik Hoffman is the society’s founder and director. She is the author of Ghosthunting New Jersey, Ghosthunting New York City, and Ghosts of the Poconos and has a variety of presentations on the paranormal which will be given at area libraries this month (listed on the bottom of www.njghs.net/ presentations.html).

Recently, Hoffman recalled stories she was told of two ghosts who are said

to haunt Bea McNally’s (formerly Charlie Brown Restaurant). In 1878, the place was the Clarendon House (hotel) and from 1926-1947 it was the Hackettstown Inn. “The ghost girl appeared to a young girl who was living at the hotel when her family owned it. She snuck down to the kitchen in the middle of the night for some ice cream. When she was headed out of the kitchen and into the dining room to sneak back upstairs, she was met with this bright, sparkling light and out of the light stepped a young girl – about the same age of the girl sneaking the ice cream – and the ghost girl was dressed from a different time period and clutching her teddy bear. The ice cream girl screamed, dropped the ice cream and ran up to her room. The next day when her parents con-

fronted her about the mess in the dining room, they did not believe her about the ghost girl she saw. However, a couple weeks later, the father saw the ghost girl, too.”

As for the other ghost, Hoffman said there are various origin stories as to who he is. Most have to do with drowning. Two versions have him as a child who was staying upstairs and died while unattended in the bathtub. Hoffman shared that in another version of the story, “A Lady of the Evening was distraught over unrequited love of one of her clients and she took a bath and drank a bottle of gin and passed out and drowned.” However, most seem to think the ghost is a child as they have got the sensation of someone wanting to ride on their shoulders or putting a small hand into theirs.

Over the years there have been other stories of ghostly presence at the location, such as unexplained footsteps and, when there was a pool hall at the location, how when it was unlocked for business one day, instead of the cleaned pool hall, cues, etc. were strung all over.

In Pompton Lakes, Laura Jennings, a member of the historic commission there, shared about some caring spirits at the Schuyler Colfax house (Hamburg turnpike, Wayne) “Dr. Jane Colfax Young grew up in the house with her father (Dr. Richard S. Colfax) and Aunt (also Dr. Jane Colfax). Katherine Young, daughter to Jane Colfax Young, shared that she spent a lot of time in the home until he was ten years old. Morristown has had its own dealing with the paranormal. Pat Goodfriend, Membership & Volunteer Coordinator for the Morris County Historical Society shared a short 2016 article by Y. McGreevy on Ford Mansion. The mansion at the Morristown National Historical Park is over 200 years old. Once the home of George Washington (briefly during 1780), the mansion drew the interest of Gordon Thomas Ward, a paranormal investigator, who in 2016, did a presentation on the Mansion and his twoyear study of it, including the noises said to be coming from inside its walls. Bells Mansion, near the Netcong-Stanhope border has also been the subject of a paranormal study. That was shared by Tom Lupo of Hopatcong, a producer who followed the NJ Ghost Hunters Society when it investigated the restaurant six years ago. The segment includes a worker recalling seeing the spirit of a woman. He was cleaning up after the restaurant had closed.

There are windows between the rooms.

He looked up and saw a woman, seated in the next room, looking out at the road. He watched her for about 10 seconds and then went to approach her. When he walked into that room, she was gone.

This Halloween, will the Hooker Man or the little girl ghost at Bea McNally’s be seen? Will voices whisper through Ford Mansion or the Lenox School? Perhaps, this year, a new spirit will be seen and its legend begun.

The Morristown Festival of Books is Back

By Henry M. Holden he Morristown Festival of Books is an annual two-day event that takes place this year on October 11 and 12. According to Rachel Barry, Director of the Morristown Festival of Books, “The 6-year-old event is modeled after successful book festivals in other communities throughout the world. Each autumn, the festival brings together authors with readers and book lovers. The Festival is New Jersey’s premier book festival, celebrating the written word’s power to challenge, transport and transform.”

Barry says the festival is growing each year. “We started with about 1,500 visitors six years ago and last year we hosted over 8,000.”

The opening night is a ticketed Keynote Event featuring Preet Bharara who

served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009 to 2017. In 2017, Bharara joined the NYU School of Law faculty as a Distinguished Scholar in Residence. Bharara will speak on Friday evening at the Mayo Performing Arts Center at 7:30pm.

Tickets will be available through the MPAC box office and on the festival website. Tickets are also available at the door on the night of the event, as availability allows.

The Main Festival takes place all day on Saturday (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.), rain or shine.

This year’s festival features more than 50 authors.

Author selections featuring various genres are designed to appeal to a variety of ages and reading interests.

“Authors will be speaking and answering questions in informal one-hour indoor sessions at five festival ven-

ues throughout the day,” said Barry. “Immediately following his or her talk, you will have the opportunity to speak with your favorite authors and have your books personalized at the Author Signing Tent, on the Vail Mansion lawn.” These sessions are free, no tickets required; general seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. There will also be portable restrooms at the Vail Mansion lawn.

“The Festival center is on the lawn in front of the historic Vail Mansion (110 South Street), where there is an Information Tent, a

“This year's closing event is an exciting interactive event called Pitchapalooza,” said Barry. “It's like American Idol for books (only without Simon). Anyone with an idea for a book has the chance to pitch it to a panel of judges. But they get only one minute.”

team up with guest industry insiders to form the judging panel. The Judges critique everything from idea to style to potential in the marketplace and much more. Whether potential authors pitch themselves, or simply listen to trained professionals critique each presentation, Pitchapaloozas are educational and entertaining for all. All attendees come away with concrete advice on how to improve their pitch as well as a greater understanding of the ins and outs of the publishing industry.

At the end of each Pitchapalooza, the judges come together to pick a winner.

That winner receives an introduction by Eckstut and Sterry to an agent or publisher who is appropriate for their work. The Festival audience will also have a chance to pick a winning pitch. That Audience Choice winner will be voted on by

the audience and will receive a 30-minute phone consultation from Eckstut and Sterry (a $150 value).

KidFest @ MFOB includes author talks, signings, and fun activities all day for children up to 12 years old. Additionally, concessions will be available in the KidFest outdoor area outside the Presbyterian Church Parish House at 65 South Street.

Mayo Performing Arts Center Celebrates 25 Years of Prosperity

By Jerry Del Priore n September 13th, the Mayo Performing Arts Center (MPAC) kicked off its 25th anniversary with a fabulous concert by singer/actress and American Idol finalist Katherine McPhee.

MPAC, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has been at the center of Morristown’s revitalization and is a major reason why it’s a nightlife hotspot today, with several wonderful bars and restaurants lining its lively streets since its inception, according to General Manager Ed Kirchdoerffer.

“Twenty-five years ago, Morristown wasn’t the popular town it is now,” Kirchdoerffer, a Morristown native, said. “We feel the opening of the performing arts center was part of the rebuilding of Morristown. It’s been an anchor for improvement.”

Top musical and comedic acts have performed at MPAC over the years, from Foreigner and Daughtry to Melissa Ethridge and Wayne Brady, and every great entertainer in

between.

Moreover, MPAC doesn’t have any plans of slowing down any time soon. Musical performers such as America, Kenny G, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Ruben Studdard will be hitting the stage in October.

“We feel we’re still in a growth cycle,” Kirchdoerffer said. “We constantly challenge ourselves to grow and invest in ourselves to make the best possible events.”

Kirchdoerffer said some of the ways MPAC will be celebrating its 25 years in Morristown are by holding a few free concerts, ask its performance-goers, on social media, to name their favorite moments since its opening, and have a number of $25 ticket offers, to name a few.

“The emphasis isn’t placed on being a star,” Kirchdoerffer explained. “It’s placed on being part of a team, being part of the creative process. They really get a full immersive experience. Everyone’s so encouraging of everyone else.”

While most of the kids don’t enter the entertainment world, Kirchdoerffer noted that they will gain valuable skills that will help them succeed in life.

“Most won’t go on to become performers,” he said, “but they will learn important life skills that will go a long way, whether it’s in the boardroom or other areas of work.”

Additionally, MPAC offers The Miracle Project, a fully inclusive music and theatre program for children with autism of all levels.

“It’s been a very powerful program,” Kirchdoerffer said. “This is a program that grew organically. Many parents have spoken about (their experiences) and are happy to see their kids enjoy themselves. This (program) gives them a safe haven. They get to have fun while being themselves.”

There’s also an Art Upstairs Gallery, located in the balcony lobby of MPAC, which showcases visual artists from a variety of disciplines, including watercolor, oils, photography, sculpture and more. Each year, the works of over 200 artists are showcased in group exhibits. Each display hangs from six to eight weeks.

With all the success MPAC has experienced over the last 25 years, Kirchdoerffer said he hopes to see more prosperous years ahead for the Morristown institution, which has been a staple in the thriving town.

“We have been here for 25 years and hope to do it for 25 more years and beyond,” he said. “It’s been the town’s heartbeat.”

Safely Use GPS Systems While Driving

t wasn’t too long ago that drivers pulled into filling stations and rest stops to pick up maps to help them find their way. But nowadays global positioning systems have rendered paper maps and atlases somewhat obsolete. GPS systems are now so advanced that many even help drivers avoid traffic and/or toll roads.

Navigation systems can be used from smartphones or technology built into cars.

GPS systems are convenient and often very accurate. But drivers run the risk of accident anytime their attention is diverted from the road — even during momentary glances at GPS devices. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says distracted driving is dangerous and claimed 3,166 lives in 2017 alone. The Ontario Provincial Police say distracted driving continues to be the No. 1 cause of accidents in the province, causing more fatal accidents than any other factor.

How can drivers safely use navigation systems while operating a vehicle? The following tips can help.

• Set the address destination and plot the course while the vehicle is parked. GPS should not be tinkered with while driving. If new directions are needed, or if you need a look ahead at the route, pull over to do so

safely.

• Engage vocal guidance. Allow the navigation system to speak directions to you so you can keep your eyes on the road as much as possible.

• Familiarize yourself with the route prior to your trip. GPS systems are not infallible, so you should have a basic understanding of where you are going even if you plan to use GPS. This way you can anticipate turns or highway exits before the alerts and stay attuned to the traffic ahead. Navigation systems may sometimes direct drivers down the wrong side of one-way streets, so common sense should always prevail.

• Know how to operate the device before driving. Learning the tools and features of the device while the car is in motion is a recipe for an accident. Instead, learn how to use it before hitting the road so you can engage the screen or navigation system as minimally as possible while on the move.

• Enlist the help of a co-pilot. Ask a passenger to take charge and help with directions so you can keep your eyes on the road.

GPS navigation systems come in handy, but they should always be used with safety in mind.

reast cancer is a formidable foe. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 627,000 women lost their lives to breast cancer in 2018. But women are not helpless in the fight against breast cancer, as the WHO notes early detection is critical and could potentially save thousands of lives each year.

A proactive approach is a key component of protecting oneself against breast cancer.

While the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® notes that many breast cancer symptoms are invisible and not noticeable without a professional cancer screening, women can keep an eye out for certain signs of breast cancer they might be able to detect on their own. Monthly self-exams can help women more easily identify changes in their breasts. During such self-exams, women can look for the following signs and symptoms and are advised to report any abnormalities they discover to their physicians immediately.

• Changes in how the breast or nipple feels: The NBCF says nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm could indicate the presence of breast cancer. Some women may notice changes in the skin texture or an enlargement of the pores in the skin of their breast.

In many instances, skin texture has been

described as being similar to the texture of an orange peel. Lumps in the breast also may indicate breast cancer, though not all lumps are cancerous.

• Change in appearance of the breast or nipple: Unexplained changes in the size or shape of the breast; dimpling anywhere on the breast; unexplained swelling or shrinking of the breast, particularly when the shrinking or swelling is exclusive to one side only; and a nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted are some signs and symptoms of breast cancer that can affect the appearance of the breast or nipple. It is common for women’s breasts to be asymmetrical, but sudden asymmetry should be brought to the attention of a physician.

• Discharge from the nipple: The NBCF notes that any discharge from the nipple, but particularly a clear or bloody discharge, could be a sign of breast cancer. The NBCF also advises women that a milky discharge when they are not breastfeeding is not linked to breast cancer but should be discussed with a physician.

Learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can increase the likelihood of early diagnosis, which greatly improves women’s chances of surviving this disease.

Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience

O

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience.

Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event.

Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering.

“I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab.

Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.”

Alumni Board of Epic Experience as an Outreach Specialist in June 2015.

In 2017, she became the Alumni Team lead, and in 2018 joined the Board of Directors.
