Jenissa Arnette Voice of Respect and Equality in Livingston

I

By Jillian Risberg t’s a groundbreaking year for Jenissa Arnette, not speaking as a representative of the Livingston Board of Education, but as a community member who is experiencing several firsts. “You would think this wouldn’t be the case right now but it is,” Arnette says, of being the first Black person elected to the LBOE and also the first Latinx person to hold an elected position in town. “In order for things to happen, we have to break barriers.” And she is… George Floyd was the catalyst. “It got to a point where I’m like, everyone has to do their part,” says Arnette. “Jump in and be part of making that change.” She’s taught in a lot of districts — both suburban and urban and is currently in Montclair, which is diverse. “I’ve done it all and feel like I have a perspective a lot of people don’t have,” Arnette says a valuable perspective and she needs to use her voice. “I started my career working at a preschool and I’m an adjunct professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology.” She first spoke to the board in 2018 and told them she’d be in the district for a while and would appreciate it if Livingston could work on some things. She didn’t see any progress or movement, or says maybe there was movement but it wasn’t quick enough. Not only is Arnette passionate about providing an inclusive environment for all students, but the math educator knows Livingston School District’s weakness is math. They’ve been working on their curriculum and rolling out a new third grade curriculum. “Every year they bring it down to the lower grades to catch everyone back up to speed,” she says it wasn’t as far as inclusiveness, it was also in terms of math and mental health. “All these things matter to me as an educator.” According to the math teacher, kids go to school every

day and you hear some have committed suicide because they didn’t feel included. And not black students, LGBTQIA students and it’s a real issue. “I decided to do this to make sure inclusive decisions and diversity of thought was put into perspective,” says Arnette, whose school is a pilot school for restorative justice. “I think it’s a great program and extremely important.” Livingston does not implement restorative justice (empowering students to resolve conflicts on their own and in small groups) practices, at least not a formal curriculum but she would like them to because one of the issues when kids get to high school is they don’t interact. Restorative justice in schools starting at a young age can build and strengthen those relationships. She says even if they’re not the best of friends, you don’t want to see them hurt people they know and have a connection with. When it comes to anti-racism and building relationships, Arnette says the district needs to make sure they’re working on these issues because many children feel isolated. “And education isn’t the only thing kids need, they need to feel like they’re coming to a safe and welcoming environment. It’s not all academics,” she says there’s a lot of emotional stuff that plays into this. “The emotional wellbeing of children is a big concern of mine.” It happens everywhere, but what we can do here in the Livingston community is the important part. The new COVID normal is a continuing daily reality and couple that with the stress of high school and middle school; it’s tough for both kids and adults. “You have to make a well-rounded child and a child cannot learn at their best if they’re not emotionally well,” says Arnette, in order to make sure children are emotionally well through the pandemic, a lot of support needs to happen in the school district. A single, divorced mom with three children, her daughters

graduated Livingston High School Class of 2019 and 2020 and her son is in fifth grade, the math educator says she is happy with the school system. “I feel like I’ve chosen a good district for them and they’ve gotten a great education,” Arnette says. “But there’s always room for improvement (and) that’s my purpose.” Livingston kids have a

built in advocate. She has a strong voice as an educator, speaks for teachers, for what’s happening in the schools, she taught remotely and hybrid, and knows what that’s like, as well as understanding the structure of the school, inner workings, policies. “I can’t sit back and just watch anymore,” Arnette says.

Livingston Man’s New Album Speaks to His Recent Journey

F

By Steve Sears or Livingston resident, Jared Wohl, the title of his new album perfectly describes his journey the past eight years, and his need to return to something he loves. Wohl says, “Life’s greatest irony is that you just never know when you’re going to need something, and I feel like for me and my love for music has never wavered.” As a follow up to his debut solo EP, By The Morning (2012), which he released under the name of Farewell Luna, Wohl’s first full-length album is titled, The Road. Recorded at Architek Studios in Butler, it is, in a way, a biography of his life the past 10 years. “These songs that I put on this record I’d recorded and written years ago. It was almost like I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed the songs until I had listened to them again, and I think having had the opportunity to let time go on and let these songs kind of breathe a bit, it just kind of reinvigorated my love and my passion.” Wohl learned to play instruments as a child, ultimately teaching himself how to play guitar and then write music. He hadn’t really spent a lot of time on pursuing music as a career as an endeavor. His priorities changed. First came marriage, then home ownership, and finally two young sons. “I’ve got so many things that I’m incredibly grateful for,” he says, “but it was almost as if music had sort of taken a backseat to that; not purposely, but sort of organically.” According to Wohl, that all changed one evening when he, his wife Samantha, and two sons, Quinn and Callan, were sitting in their living room, music playing in the background as it always does in their home. “My wife said, ‘Hey, put on one of your songs.’” Her husband reached for a track of his that he had recorded and, upon hearing his dad’s voice, his

older son’s eyes lit up and he said, ‘That Da Da?” It was an “A-ha” moment for his father. “It was just sort of this epiphany that I had in that moment that I had to get the songs out. It was at that very moment that I came to that realization,” says Wohl. “Arguably the best session players in the world,” Wohl says of bass guitarist Sean Hurley, drummer Aaron Sterling, and Andy Burton, keyboardist, all who joined Wohl on The Road. “These are musicians that have toured and recorded with the likes of John Mayer, the Taylor Swift’s of the world. I mean, heavy hitters in the music industry. Leading up to that session, of course, there was a lot of excitement. As far as the actual experience of getting to be in the same room as them and playing music with such talent, it’s just hard to put that into words. It was just such a cool experience. You see artists that are so talented at their craft, it’s awe inspiring, and it doesn’t just have to be in relation to music, but it definitely forced me to level up in many ways.” And to work with the trio again? “Oh, my goodness, if I had an opportunity, I would jump at it.” For Wohl, 36, a Montclair State University graduate, his family and music are a huge part of his life, but so are other things. Wohl embraces educational technology, not only the learning of it, but putting it to use in education, and also serves as an advisor for The Wave Set, a Partner Fund of the NJ Sharing Network, which educates on the importance of organ donation. In fact, Wohl in 2014 donated 65% of his liver to his brother, Cameron. Wohl intends on adding to his musical resume. “I need music to be a priority in my life to some extent, and I absolutely have plans to record and release more music. And

The album cover for The Road. Photo credit Samantha Wohl.

I also know my heart and passion has always been in writing, and if I could have an opportunity to write and produce for other artists, I would jump at that opportunity as well. And that’s what I’m really hoping, to use these songs as a way to get my music out there, but also establish myself as a songwriter.” For more information about Wohl and his music, visit www.jaredwohl.com. he Borough of Roseland, NJ offers its sincere condolences to the family of longtime Roseland resident and former Coordinator of the Roseland First Aid Squad, Joe Silvia. In his honor, the flag has been lowered to half-staff and memorial bunting has been raised onto the Borough Hall building at 140 Eagle Rock Avenue. “Joe Silvia was the Roseland First Aid Squad. Always the first to answer a call out, Joe assisted our residents in their worst of times,” said Roseland Mayor James R. Spango. “His dedication and vision made the Roseland First Aid Squad what it is today. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his first aid squad family.” Coordinator Silvia passed away on February 20th at the age of 78 and had honorably served both his community and his country. Joe Silvia was born in Jersey City, raised in Hoboken, and moved to Roseland in 1977. Silvia served in the Army Reserves and once moving to Roseland, he joined the First Aid Squad in 1987, serving

as Coordinator off and on for about 20 years and had held every rank in the Squad over his years of service. Silvia also served as a Board of Trustees Member for the Roseland First Aid Squad for many years. Silvia can only be described as a dedicated public servant and a truly one-of-a-kind individual. A service was held on Saturday, February 26 at Shook-Farmer Funeral Home in Roseland.

Caldwell Boxer Enjoying Great Success in the Ring

O

By Steve Sears n a recent chilly February morning, Caldwell boxer Nicolas “The Bull” Vitone was in Sussex County, preparing to head to Ace’s Boxing Club in Boonton. There he would train once again with his coach, Joe Zabry, the same coach he’s had since he first laced on boxing gloves 12 years ago. “I’m growing and getting better,” Vitone says. “I believe it’s just the beginning, and that I can do something great in this sport.” Vitone’s current record as a professional boxer is 6 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw, and those 6 wins for the super lightweight have all been by knockout. Vitone, who was born in Denville and grew up in Montville, had his first amateur fight at age 16. He won that fight, and he’ll be 26 soon, and his ninth professional fight is this April. In addition to his successful win-loss record, another highlight is that he has boxed at the Prudential Center in Newark as part of the Premiere Boxing Champions Boxing Fight Night. “I’m living my dream right now,” Vitone says. Vitone, whose grandfather was a former Golden Gloves boxer, considers himself a “throwback fighter.” “I work the body well. I really do consider myself a bull. I do come forward, and I have great defense and offense. I believe I’m an all-around fighter,” he says. He counts among his favorite boxers Sugar Ray Leonard, Arturo Gatti, and Roberto Duran. Vitone’s pathway to the sport of boxing was forged, in a way, via the gridiron. He played football his entire life and loved it, but when he entered his freshman year of high school, he was a lot smaller than the other players. “I thought I was pretty good when I was younger, and then I

stopped growing,” Vitone recalls. “I went to every practice, worked hard, but didn’t get much playing time.” That lack of playing time, coupled with Vitone’s fascination and interest with boxing, as well as the desire to stay in shape, was the start of his own path to the ring. He was also encouraged by his older sister’s friend to join Ace’s Boxing Club, which at that time was located in Pine Brook. “I stopped in and basically fell in love, and was hooked after that,” he says. “Just honestly, I was just so fascinated by everything about it.” For the rest of that first day, he tried to edge his way towards the speed bag when he saw others pounding it. Vitone, whose early bouts were all four-rounders, won his first four professional fights, the initial victory coming in August 2020 with first round knockout of his opponent, Kire Lucas. After then suffering a controversial draw and loss in his fifth and sixth bouts respectively, Vitone came back on November 20 of last year with a second round TKO of Quadarrius Hopkins, and then scored another second round TKO in his first six-round bout against Jared Glenn on Saturday, February 5, in Rock Hill, South Carolina. However, it’s not just about the wins and the successful record for Vitone. It’s also the education in the ring. “I’m never perfect and I’m most critical of myself, and I grow from every fight, win, lose, or draw,” Vitone says. And as he approaches his next fight on April 2 at The Terrace in Paramus, that maturation as a boxer continues with confidence. “That includes my training, just being comfortable in the ring, and just growing and getting better with each fight. I consider myself the hardest working boxer out there, and I believe I’m going to earn everything I want in this sport.”

Hometown Hero Banner Program

he Borough of Roseland is proud to launch a brandnew program that will honor Roseland’s veterans over the years and give them the public recognition that they deserve. “Our veterans are the reason we live in the best nation in the world,” said Mayor James R. Spango. “I’m proud that we can take yet another opportunity to honor them for their selfless service.” Banners will be hung along Eagle Rock Avenue between Borough Hall (140 Eagle Rock Avenue) and the Department of Public Works building (300 Eagle Rock Avenue). There are enough poles for the Borough to hang approximately 60 banners. If the Borough receives over 60 requests for banners, additional submittal requests will be placed on a waitlist as the Borough Council will then need to decide if they want additional banners placed on other roadways in the Borough. The cost of $175 per banner pays for the banner itself, the cost to ship the banner to the Borough, the cost to have the banners hung on the poles, and some additional funding to be reserved in the event a banner

needs to be replaced due to an act of God. The Borough will pick up the remainder of the costs involved that are not covered by the fee. The program will last two years, so someone who purchases a banner in 2022 will see their banner hung up in both 2022 & 2023 and have the banners given to them by the end of 2023. The program will reopen again in 2024 for 2024 & 2025. Hometown Hero Banner eligibility is open to alive or deceased veterans that currently or had resided in Roseland at any point in their life OR the veteran is/was a family member (father, mother, husband, wife, son, daughter, brother, sister, grandfather, grandmother, great grandfather, great grandmother, great-great grandfather, great-great grandmother, father-in-law, motherin-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law) of a current Roseland resident. Residents can order a banner by going through an online payment form, accessed by clicking the “Online Payments” button on the Borough website, www.roselandnj. org. A Banner Order Form will also need to be filled out to process the information to be put on the banner,

which is linked to on the Payment Form. A sample rendering of a banner can be viewed on the Borough website and on the Banner Order Form.

Home Zone... continued from page 4 person; $24.12 million for a married couple). The recipient of your gift will need to provide a gift letter to their lender showing where the money came from. Q: What’s the relationship between mortgage rates and the real estate market? A: Mortgage rates dictate what buyers will be required to repay on a monthly basis. Lower rates usually mean people can afford the monthly payment of a higher priced home. When rates rise, their buying power erodes. To illustrate the difference of one percentage point, a 30-year fixed rate mortgage of $700,000 at 4% would cost a buyer $3,341.91 per month. At 5%, the payment would go to $3,757.75––a $415 increase per month. Right now, rates are on the rise, predicted to approach 5% by year end. If this happens, it could potentially result in deflating home sale prices or a shrinking pool of willing buyers. If you’re interested in selling at the top of a competitive market, now may be a smart time to list. Have your own question featured in The Home Zone! Email Andrea.HomeZone@gmail.com. Livingston Native Nominated for Television Academy Foundation’s 41st College TV Awards

L

By Alexander Rivero ivingston’s own Spencer Askinazy has been nominated for the prestigious Television Academy Foundation’s 41st annual College Television Awards, which rewards brilliance in student-produced programming from colleges and universities across the country. Askinazy is a graduate of Livingston High School and is a current student at the University of Miami (UM) in sunny Coral Gables, Florida. He—along with fellow classmates at UM—are being nominated in the “News & Sports” category for their work on UMTV NewsVision, a weekly thirty-minute program which covers local, state, national, and international news and airs live every Thursday at 7:00 p.m. EST. How does one go about falling in love with television production? For Askinazy, it was fate that intervened in the form of an art requirement during his freshman year of high school, and an open slot in a seminar called Basic TV Production. “I’m not artsy, and pounced on that [Basic TV Production] as a way to meet the requirement,” says Askinazy. “I loved it from the start.” By his sophomore year, he and his fellow

Livingston High classmates were filming basketball and football games, writing and planning in-studio shows where locals would come in and dish out community news and updates, and getting a hands-on understanding for the business. “Ever since those earlier days at Livingston, I loved spending time with the people that naturally gravitated into this line of work,” says Askinazy. “I loved everything about it, the whole process.” Of particular help in his early falling in love with the T.V. business were teachers Steve Milano and Jason Daily. Askinazy spent a good deal of time with Milano after school, pouring over cameras and techniques, the ins and outs of every last detail of what goes into a successful production. Askinazy ate it all up and wondered where the time flew. Once at UM, he jumped right into the school’s nationally ranked studentproduction center, starting as video editor, moving up to video producer, where he learned to supervise all videos that were edited right for the air, and was then nominated and accepted for executive producer of the NewVision program. Askinazy says it all became clear to him

upon learning of his acceptance to UM, especially when he began getting involved with the television programming. “Once I arrived at UM, everything really clicked for me,” says Askinazy. “As time has gone on it has all been more of a defined path. I saw that I could make a career out of this. Because of the UM TV and the programs and classes I’ve been able to take, it’s all become clear that this is where I need to be. It’s a great feeling. And now, by specializing and knowing particular parts of the field more clearly, I’ve been able to narrow my options a little more. I can now start applying to jobs more efficiently.” Askinazy says the most difficult part of the job is the managing of all the quirky moving parts in any given production. “We change our cast around each year, making everybody go through auditions—for anchor, for reporters, etc.,” he says. “So it’s tough having to usher in new people and working with them, ensuring they meet deadlines, take the effort to see their work is up to standard.” That said, Askinazy has nothing but gratitude for the chance to have worked with such talented people so far in his young life.

“I’m very, very proud of all my colleagues, as well as all the mentors I’ve had along the way, especially back at Livingston with Mr. Daily and Mr. Milano.” As for his favorite part of the job, it’s a nobrainer: “No question, being in a position to lead. I’ve always felt like I’ve been a natural leader, which for me is nothing more than pushing the very best out of the people you’re leading, pushing them to be better than they were yesterday, in the same way I was pushed to become better.” continued on page 12

continued from page 10 As for life in Miami, Askinazy reports: “I love it down here. I could not have asked for a better college experience. I was committed to Maryland for a few hours, but as soon as I was taken off the UM waitlist, it was an instant ‘yes’ from me. It’s one of the best TV programs in the country, consistently nominated. It’s an honor to be down here.” Looking beyond southern Florida, Askinazy says he’s thinking about the bigger markets as potential landing spots for himself post-graduation. A return to

the New York City area is possible, other potential contenders include Washington DC, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and yes, even Miami itself. As for the Television Academy Foundation Award, 54 total students have been nominated in six different categories for the 2022 awards, all of which have been selected from 185 entries submitted from 58 colleges across the country. The winners of the competition will be announced by television stars at the 41st College Television Awards ceremony on March 26.

cientists note there is growing skepticism that the world will be able to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius during this century. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, achieving that goal, which could prevent the more dire climate change-related forecasts from becoming reality, will require dramatic action over the next couple of decades. The 1.5 degree goal was a point of contention in the recent past, when many European countries felt limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius was sufficient. However, small island states felt that the 2 degrees

model put their nations in grave jeopardy. Those nations argued that the extra half a degree would contribute to a rise in sea level that would devastate their countries. That debate is worth revisiting as the outlook for achieving the 1.5 degree Celsius goal looks increasingly dim. Leaked documents from the United Nations-backed Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change noted that minimizing global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius as opposed to 2 degrees Celsius could save the homes of 10 million people and reduce the percentage of the global population that would experience water scarcity by half.

After a Wait, RELLIK is Set to Perform

F

By Steve Sears or Michael Lee Allen especially, it’s been a long wait. “This band was in the making for the last two years,” he says of RELLIK, a five-member, New Jersey-based rock, hard rock, and heavy metal musical group that plays songs from the 1970’s to the present, while also branching out with new material. “Covid and 2020 brought things to a halt,” Allen adds, “and then I had to make a lineup change. Some band members were no longer available. But the lineup that’s in place now is incredibly solid and reliable, and I’m moving forward with the project.” Allen, who lives in West Orange, is the band’s drummer and percussionist. He is joined on stage by lead vocalist, Sarkis Sarkisian; lead and rhythm guitarist, Jim Ramundo; bass guitarist, Vic Pais; and keyboard and synthesizer player, Moises Modesto. The latter three and Allen all provide backing vocals. “Everyone is an educated, schooled, and formally trained musician,” Allen says. RELLIK’s beginning stems from a prior band called Kidd Comet. Allen explains. “That’s an original band, a national act that I was in, and my keyboard player – our lead vocalist – had just passed away. So, Kidd Comet is no longer. So, this stems off of that, and that’s how it came about.” According to Allen, RELLIK does not just focus on playing hits, but also focuses on B-side songs and album cuts. “It corresponds to the theme of this band, you know? RELLIK: “killer” (RELLIK is “killer” spelled backwards) mu-

sic from a time ago,” he says. “We are covering, going into the ‘70’s, Deep Purple, Quiet Riot, Judas Priest. And then creeping into the 80’s, we go to the pop side of things which would be The Cult – which would be considered New Wave – ZZ Top, and we’re doing Stevie Ray Vaughn. We’re also tapping into blues rock with one number that I really like that comes out very well with us, a song called ‘Tough Enough’ by the Fabulous Thunderbirds. That was a great suggestion by our lead vocalist. With the ‘80’s and ‘90’s we’re doing Stone Temple Pilots, Creed, Blink 182, and, venturing off a little bit, some more obscure bands from that time like Velvet Revolver. Then it goes on from there into the 2000s with more modern stuff.” Allen himself has quite a resume. Thirty years ago, he performed with an original trio called Divine Judgement, and there he initially developed his reputation as a hard rock drummer while the band toured and headlined excessively. It also ballooned his workload, not that he minded. “I did several projects at once – I crossed over,” he says with a laugh. “I was somehow in high demand from my past reputation. I was in three original acts at once. I was able to do it, making albums on these Indie labels, and touring extensively throughout Europe, Japan, South America, the US, and Canadian dates as well.” In 2012, he joined a female-fronted hard rock band called SYKA. “Besides that, back in 2006, I became the Praise & Worship drummer for the Presbyterian Church of Upper Montclair,” Allen says. “I started a Praise & Worship

continued from page 14 church, and I was the first drummer in the history of the church. So, some groundbreaking things for the community there.” As previously mentioned, RELLIK also is focused on original compositions. “Original material is being done as we speak,” Allen confirms. “We have a lot of ideas just in the, I want to say, lyrical but not so much musical stage yet. But lyrically, I’ve written stuff already, and I know what I would want it to sound like, but I want to present it to the band. We make a band decision on things like this. It’s not just mine. Anyone could pull from whatever resource they want and submit anything, so

everything’s welcome and we’ll compile it; kind of mix it up and pull it out of a hat and see what we’ve got. I like those kinds of surprises; it creates equality in the band, and everyone has a say.” Allen has high energy and hopes for RELLIK, who performed at the Greenhouse Bar & Grill in Wayne on January 14. “I am adrenalized for this band,” Allen says. “This excitement is something I’ve had in the past when, once I feel it, I’m like, ‘Alright, the energy is there. The spirit for it is there. And the demand for it is there.’” For more information, visit RELLIK’s Facebook page.

ccording to the International Foundation for Gastrointestinal Disorders, between 10 and 15 percent of the worldwide population suffers from irritable bowel syndrome, making IBS the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder across the globe. The IFFGD notes that about 40 percent of individuals with IBS have a mild form of the condition, which is

marked by abdominal pain that is typically accompanied by diarrhea, constipation or alternating episodes of both. Though men and women suffer from IBS, it’s considered a major women’s health issue. The IFFGD reports that hysterectomy or ovarian surgery has been performed more often among IBS patients than in comparison groups.

Sister Cities: Caldwell, New Jersey, Meet Caldwell, Ohio

T

By Steve Sears he Village of Caldwell, Ohio is a pretty friendly and interesting place. Consider first of all some of the dining options. The names alone welcome you to the one-square mile village. Kathy’s Kitchen, a family-friendly eatery, is located on Cumberland Street, Lori’s Family Restaurant is easily accessible right off of Route 78, and Patty’s Place is located on Route 821. “And there’s a good coffee shop, the West Street Coffee Bar,” Jeff Minosky says. Minosky is President of the Noble County Historical Society, and he has lived in Caldwell, Ohio for 58 years. He is also on the Caldwell, Ohio Village Council. And there’s plenty of history. The village of Caldwell, Ohio, which is the Noble County seat, was founded in 1851 by Joseph and Samuel Caldwell, and their home, the Ball – Caldwell Homestead, which was built in 1832, has a rebuilt barn (the original barn was destroyed by fire in the 1940s when it was still a working farm). The site is now used for weddings and events. The BZC (Bellaire, Zanesville, and Cincinnati) Railroad – affectionately known as “Bent, Zigzag, and Crooked,” which made its way to the village in the 1870’s, was a key to its growth. It stopped running in the 1920’s. “There’s a red caboose, #33, and it’s actually from the BZC Railroad,” Minosky says. “That’s beside a little well site, and actually it was drilled as a salt well in the early 1800’s. They were drilling for salt and they hit oil (the Thorla-McKee Oil Well), and they didn’t know exactly what to do with it. The well is still there, and it’s got a tree casing down in the well. It’s

pretty cool.” Also nearby is the restored Heritage Park Covered Bridge at the Noble County Fairgrounds. The bridge was stationed in its current spot since 1970, but the estimated date of its construction was in the 1890’s. Vehicular traffic is not permitted through the bridge, but it is a beautiful photo opportunity for those visiting the location. Caldwell, Ohio has a population approximately 1,800 people. It’s Garden State “sister city” has about 8,000 residents and is a little over a square mile. Route 821 is the north to south route which runs through the Midwestern Caldwell, while Route 78, which initially ran through the village on Main Street, was rerouted in the 1960’s to run east to west below the village border. “The nice thing about Caldwell is it has a village square,” Minosky says. “The courthouse is the centerpiece of the village square. It was built in 1933 as a WPA project, and then a lot of the buildings that surround the courthouse are from the 1890’s. The historical society owns what is called the Noble County Historic Jail Museum. The sheriff and his wife lived in the jail, and the sheriff’s wife would cook the meals for the prisoners. We still have the cells, and they’re old-fashioned cells.” The jail was in use until 1999 and is now the home of the Noble County Historical Society, which is located on West Street. Also of note, because of its ties to the Garden State, is the crash of the USS Shenandoah on September 3, 1925. “A lighter-than-air dirigible was what it was,” Minosky says, who also mentions that the USS Shenandoah’s home continued on page 17

The History and Mythology of St. Patrick’s Day

T

By Henry M. Holden here is one day a year when people of all ethnic groups can claim to be Irish. Saint Patrick’s Day, (or from Gaelic: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, “Day of the Feastday of Patrick”), is a cultural and religious celebration held on March 17, the assumed death date of Saint Patrick (385 – 461). The original reason for the celebration was the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. More countries celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day than any other national festival. It is a public holiday in seven countries and is widely celebrated in the United Kingdom, Canada, United States, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. The Potato Famine that struck Ireland (1845-52) led to the immigration of over one-million Irish to the United States, in one decade, although it continued to a lesser extent into the early 20th century. When Irish immigrants brought St. Patrick’s Day traditions to the United States, the day evolved into a secular celebration of Irish heritage and culture. Saint Patrick’s Day became an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century. Celebrations involve parades, céilís, a social event at which there is Irish folk

music, traditional dancing, shared folklore, leprechauns, and all things Irish. Pubs served green beer and the folks in Chicago dye the river green (a tradition dating back to 1962). Modern celebrations are still influenced by the Irish diaspora, the ethnic Irish and their descendants who live outside the island of Ireland and influenced by those that developed in North America. What we know about Patrick is he wrote his own autobiography in the form of a Declaration. He was born in Roman Britain in the fourth century, into a wealthy RomanoBritish family, and became a fifth-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. The shamrock, a three-leafed clover is not only a feature of Celtic mythology, but it was also especially important in Irish legend in the spread of Christianity. The shamrock, aka the “seamroy” was a sacred plant in ancient Ireland. It symbolized the rebirth of spring. By the seventeenth century, the shamrock had become a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism. Saint Patrick tried to inform the Celts on the Holy Trinity, but they could not understand what he was saying. Patrick saw a clover and decided to use

it to explain the Holy Trinity, the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit as one. The Celts realized what he meant, and that’s how the shamrock became so important in Irish history and social tradition. Spirited music is often associated with St. Patrick’s Day—and Irish culture in general. From earliest days of the Celts, music has been an important part of Irish life. The Celts had an oral culture, where religion, legend and history were passed from one generation to the next by way of stories and songs. The English began to seize land and make laws against the use of the Irish language and the practice of Catholicism. The first British Law specifically banned the use of the Irish language was Article III of The Statute of Kilkenny in 1367. As a result, Irish began to wear the shamrock as a symbol of their pride in their heritage, and their anger with English rule. After being conquered by the English, and forbidden to speak their own language, the Irish, like other oppressed peoples, turned to music to help them remember notable events and retain their heritage and history, as it often stirred emotion and helped to galvanize the people. One of the most lasting folklore stories

is the legend that during his mission in Ireland, Patrick once stood on a hilltop (which is now called Croagh Patrick), and with only a shepard’s staff, banished all the snakes from Ireland. The “banishing of the snakes” was a metaphor for the suppression of pagan ideologies from Ireland and the triumph of Christianity. Within two hundred years continued on page 21

St. Patrick’s Day...

continued from page 20 of Patrick’s arrival, most of Ireland was converted. Each year, thousands of Irish Americans gather with their loved ones on St. Patrick’s Day to share a “traditional” meal of corned beef and cabbage. Cabbage has long been in the Irish diet, but it was at the turn of the 20th century that corned beef became popular. Irish immigrants living on New York City’s Lower East Side substituted corned beef for their traditional dish of Irish bacon to save money. They learned about this inexpensive alternative from their Jewish neighbors. One icon of St. Patrick’s Day is the Leprechaun. The original Irish name for these figures of folklore is “lobaircin,” meaning “small-bodied fellow.” They have appeared for centuries in Irish folklore. Belief in leprechauns stem from Celtic belief in fairies, tiny people who could use their magical powers to serve good or evil. In Celtic folktales, leprechauns mended the shoes of the other fairies. Though only minor figures in Celtic folklore, leprechauns were known for their trickery, which they often used to protect their mythical pot of gold. According to Irish mythology, butterflies move between worlds and bring messages

and warnings. They are souls, waiting to be reborn on earth. Leprechauns are the cultural symbol of Ireland, with their names translated from ‘shoemaker’. They were said to roam Ireland before humans, with a unique hat and red hair. In oral folklore, you can find their pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, so if you visit Ireland, be sure to look for a rainbow. The harp became cemented in the folk music tradition, everyday life, and popular culture of Ireland. The Harp of Daghda is a national icon in Ireland. Folklore says that evil gods stole the first harp from the Daghda, a king in Irish/ Celtic mythology. Daghda’s music made people feel transformed. The absence of music caused sadness to pass over the country. Eventually the evil gods gave it back to them, and joy returned to the land. Now that you know some of the myths and legends from Irish folklore, you are safe to wander through the most rural parts of Ireland. And if you visit, don’t forget to visit, and kiss the Blarney Stone. According to this author’s mother who was born in County Cork, if you hang upside down by your knees and kiss the Blarney Stone you will be given the “gift of gab” or a talkative streak.

Morris County Mom’s Genius Idea is a Convenient Germ-Fighter

C

By Jillian Risberg hildren’s car seats can harbor some of the nastiest bacteria buildup you don’t want anywhere near your child. Cleaning it yourself is not only a time consuming hassle; traces may be left behind. A Madison mom knows this all too well and was inspired to do something about it. “Studies show toddler car seats have more germs than a toilet seat, which is disgusting,” says mom of two, Lauren Siclare, who started BuckleBath to help parents tackle the common germ-filled problem. It started when the entrepreneur was in the preschool drop-off car line with her daughter. A teacher took her daughter out of her car seat and a crumby mess came out with her. “I was so embarrassed, ‘how does this happen?’” Siclare wondered. “My daughter is really clean and so is my car.” She then had her ah-hah moment and realized it was leftover snack crumbs from days prior.

She promptly searched online for a cleaning service specific to children’s car seats, she even checked the Apple app store, but couldn’t find a mobile business solely dedicated to cleaning gear in driveways. This was the genesis of the business. “‘I needed to start in a market where there’s a densely populated community with a lot of young children,’ The

entrepreneur researched and wrote her business plan while working at Google, she then left corporate America to see her mobile car seat cleaning and sanitizing company to fruition. Her venture became significantly more relevant during the pandemic as a result of hyper awareness around sanitizing, disinfecting and removing germs.

“The adoption of our service and the excitement around it was very organic and spread very quickly in the beginning,” says Siclare, of witnessing it firsthand. A month into the launch, she and her husband were in a restaurant when seated behind them they heard a woman and continued on page 23

Mom’s Genius Idea...

continued from page 22 her friend talking about BuckleBath. The friend responded incredulously. “I was not shortsighted in knowing this potentially could be a nationwide brand but wanted to be strategic in proving out the concept locally,” says the entrepreneur. Siclare is incredibly grateful for her cleaning associates. She says the team’s dedication to quality has a huge impact. “If I didn’t have them out there executing and doing the cleaning themselves, I could never do this,” she praises their phenomenal effort. And the entrepreneur follows car seat manufacturer guidelines, using natural products because car seats have to be cleaned in a specific way. “That’s really important to note,” says Siclare. “We are strict about the protocols. I am a licensed CPS tech -- and sat through a four-day long, intense course to understand the rules and regulations behind car seats, then trained all my team members to do so.” After a stint on Good Morning America, there is a huge interest in BuckleBath franchises.

“We’re still a newer business and don’t spend huge amounts of money on advertising so it’s not like you’re going to walk into a Starbucks and see something about BuckleBath unless it’s a flier a mom left behind,” the entrepreneur says, ‘word of mom’ has definitely helped. As of September BuckleBath is legally a franchise. It was a lot of work, according to Siclare — but as founder of the company her hope is to be able to provide jobs, through bringing on new franchisees who want to be business owners and are passionate about introducing BuckleBath to their community. “Our strategy is to grow and meet the demands of the requests we get every single day from multiple states and towns,” says the entrepreneur. “Because no one else does exactly what we do.” As we move into the warmer spring months, a new franchisee will be running New York City. “We are looking for individuals who are interested in opening a franchise.” We have always been careful to ensure the

quality of the service is strong.” Next: Add North Jersey and New York franchisees to help BuckleBath grow and service some of the high demand areas they are not able to frequent on a regular basis. BuckleBath is interested in partnering with more of the right people to keep kids healthy in the car. “There’s complete chaos in the summer months,” says the entrepreneur. “We’re in conversations with someone in Florida to open a franchise there. They don’t have concerns about weather so we’re excited to see what BuckleBath in a different climate will do.” The branded vehicles are mainly used for in-driveway service and partnering with daycare centers to clean on site. Standard cleaning is $59. A more involved cleaning (child was carsick) $110. Your own franchise: $32,000 (plus business expenses) $61,000. Siclare has a showcase of before and after pictures. Each appointment it’s the cleaning associate’s responsibility to pick up the gear, snap a picture — and prior to

returning, take another photo to display the difference. The reactions are priceless, according to the entrepreneur. “Moms are blown away,” Siclare says. “They made this look brand new; it was so convenient, you saved me from buying another car seat,” are some of the comments she’s received about BuckleBath. And it’s why she started the business in the first place — being available for moms, dads, nannies (or whoever it may be) during a stressful time and removing the heavy burden; it’s cumbersome to clean a car seat. “If we can take it off their hands, they’re really happy about it,” says the entrepreneur. She knows her business will stand the test of time. “There’s always going to be babies born, busy parents, caretakers and BuckleBath will always be relevant,” Siclare says. NJ Based Kiwimbi Liberates Kenyan Children with Powerful Knowledge

T

By Jillian Risberg he power of education drives Kiwimbi’s potent partnership with underserved communities, vital for the future of children in rural Kenya. “It’s an opportunity to support incredibly underserved people and make a difference in the lives of (those) who live with so few opportunities,” says Lisa Connell, director of development and communications. Kiwimbi’s mission is to partner with underserved communities to create educational opportunities through locally run libraries and community learning centers. According to Connell, the educational system in Kenya was such that grade eight students had to pass the KCPE (Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education) with at least 250 out of 500 points on this national exam (given in English, not their native tongue) — otherwise they didn’t go to high school, it was the end of the road educationally. Then recently the government made secondary school a requirement, and everybody had the opportunity to attend high school. But the test now determines the quality of the secondary school where they can enroll. The secondary school system In Kenya is divided into levels: National, Extracounty, Sun-county and County. “Quality goes down, with each,” Connell says. “So a Sub-county school might have nothing more than an under-prepared teacher, 100 students and a blackboard. There are National schools, equivalent

to good high schools in the US,” she says. Connell says one of Kiwimbi’s Kenyan supporters shared that some high school’s don’t even have a science lab, so when they take the mandatory test at the end of secondary school and it was time to use a microscope in the exam, there were schools where kids had never seen one because their schools didn’t have science labs. To be offered a university spot they must pass another exam at the culmination of high school. Most of the secondary schools are boarding schools, crucial for girls especially, so they have the opportunity to focus on their education and not be required to devote time for chores and housekeeping. Kiwimbi runs many programs to support education in rural Kenyan, including an intensive program at 3 schools where small group tutoring, oneon-one mentoring and a daily lunch are the main

components. If students walk 45 minutes to school and 45 minutes home for lunch that may or may not be there and have to walk back for afternoon classes, many of the kids… (i.e., girls) would not return for afternoon classes. So in preparation for their first national exam, Kiwimbi provides nutritious lunch for Grade Eight students. “Feeding not only gives them brain power and nutrition, the ability to concentrate throughout their day — it keeps them there so they can focus on their education,” says the director of development and communications. The students in these 3 schools passed the 2020 KCPE at a rate of 63 percent, “Instead of the three percent average, usually achieved by similarily situated rural children, leaving a lot of 14-yearolds with no options,” she says. They are excited to see what March’s test will continued on page 25

Kenyan Children... continued from page 24 unveil. Kiwimbi also provides access to books, newspapers and other resources in their library, in satellite libraries they established and through regular delivery of books to the three schools they work with in the intensive program, as well as 72 schools in nearby villages. “Some of them come to us, either the class or the kids. Sometimes a teacher might get the books and bring them back,” the director of development and communications says the service is efficient. The Kiwimbi Community Centre was a rundown building owned by the county, now borrowed by Kiwimbi. They cleaned and painted the space, which houses the county’s (more than a million people) lone free public library. According to Connell, people come to charge their phones, read the newspapers, visit the museum, where they work on cultural preservation, and tailor and carpentry vocational programs. “We do outreach to three schools; an intense program includes daily lunch for the eighth-grade students, small group tutoring and one-on-one mentoring,” she says. “A government official named Kiwimbi as an Innovation Hub and installed fiber

optic cable for more reliable Internet and a local NJ church (St. Luke’s in Gladstone) donated the money for us to put in solar panels. So we have reliable Internet, reliable electricity, which is hard to come by (and) great, safe drinking water, which is also hard to come by.” Video of a 45-minute walk two kids took from their home hut to the Kiwimbi Library introduced Connell to the incredible experience. Her time at Kiwimbi since February 2020 has been transformative. “I find it fulfilling and challenging in all the right ways to work towards supporting the efforts of the students,” the director of development and communications says they’re hard workers. She was attracted to this cause because of her commitment to education, years as a third-grade (and preschool) teacher. “I was a Big Sister in college, taught Sunday school with my kids and was a Brownie leader,” says Connell. “I started at Kiwimbi in more of an administrative capacity; the position grew over the last two years. I like the people I work with, our organization, Kenyan culture is fascinating and enriching to me.” In 2010 Lynne Rathgeber, Board Chair of Kiwimbi International reached out to Prof. Over 30 Years of Experience

Olubayi Olubayi as a friend to help become more involved with non-profit work for the most underserved. Over the course of their chat, Olubayi told her of his move back to Kenya after years as an American student and teacher. “Early education he was at risk of not proceeding to secondary school because of having trouble with math, and Kenya’s exam system weeded out children like him,” Rathgeber says. “He was fortunate and got help, earning a Ph.D. in microbiology.” The professor explained back then children in rural Kenya faced the same door-die exams. “Rural children, even the brightest, could not move ahead academically because their schools were too poor to teach them,” the Board Chair says Olubayi wanted to share educational opportunities with a new generation of children, and she wanted to help. So Rathgeber and the professor gathered a group of like-minded friends to develop the concept that became Kiwimbi — a Community Learning Center serves as a source of academic and vocational training, free to all and separate from, but complementary to, the public school system. “Kiwimbi” is a Swahili word

meaning ripple. “That person will be able to earn a better living, support their family and benefit the wider community, spreading like a ripple through water,” she says, of the effect. It was a massive pursuit. Rathgeber had never been to Kenya, so in 2012 she, husband John and daughter Natalie took their first trip to witness it firsthand, engage with the people to understand if the Kiwimbi concept made sense and would be welcome, and learn about the communities benefiting from their educational opportunity. She calls it a diverse and beautiful country. “We didn’t see it all, but did see the big city (Nairobi), a bit of the largest slum in Africa (Kibera), high mountains (Mt. Kenya), vast plains (Masai Mara), spectacular game (lions, hippos, giraffes, elephants, hyenas, antelope, zebra, wildebeest… so many); industrious people walking everywhere, and smiling children thrilled to see their first white people,” the Board Chair says they fell in love. Seeing people make do on tiny farmsteads with mud huts, water from the river, no electricity, reliant on a changing climate Rathgeber calls an eye-opener. continued on page 26

Kenyan Children... continued from page 25 The children spread the word about the visiting “wazungu” (white people), wanted to hold their hands and tried to converse (on a limited basis), as well as see photos on their phones and ask questions. “When we sat with them with Olubayi and other adults and asked about their aspirations, they were hopeful (which) we encouraged,” she says. “The sad truth is without access to better education, for the vast majority those might be pipe dreams, and limited in vision by the world around them. If you have never seen or known of a scientist, mathematician, engineer, writer, a painter… how can you aspire to become one?” After visiting this distant world Rathgeber says they knew they were doing the right thing in establishing Kiwimbi there. COVID hits marginalized and underserved students hardest. Kiwimbi continued its impactful work throughout the pandemic, while Kenya closed down. Travel was restricted, schools closed the better part of a year, masks were mandated, the country was cautious. Kenya was fortunate to not have the number of first-year infections of other nations. “But with schools closed, children could

Family Owned & Operated

not access what few resources they might have had, education came to a standstill for the majority of Kenyan children, especially in rural areas where books were scarce and other services non-existent,” says the Board Chair, adding Kiwimbi worked within the restrictions and met with most of the children who depended on them. They met in small groups outside and a limited number had access to enter and borrow library books, which they took to various small-group meetings around the countryside. The months’ long break did not result in a setback; it provided many a chance to catch up with students from more affluent areas. The path to liberation is knowledge and Rathgeber says Kiwimbi takes this route. Rather than give “things” to their beneficiaries, they share knowledge. “This is empowerment, not handouts,” she adds if a young person is educated, they have the power to earn a livelihood, ensure their siblings education, get a job off the tiny farm or create a successful business. “They can make educated decisions about who to elect to power and envision

a village, county or country serving the best interests of their families, determine how to accomplish that, and make it happen.” With knowledge they can mold their own world. Thousands of children with access to books and other resources they didn’t have before — in Busia County (western Kenya) impacted, Kiwimbi sees the program as one

to develop. “Having implemented the idea successfully there, we plan to replicate the model so we can expand our geographic impact to other underserved areas,” Rathgeber says. To learn more, visit www.kiwimbi. org or text KIWIMBI to 41444 and donate. Volunteering is also welcome.

An Irish Story

W

By Richard Mabey Jr. hat force of nature could possibly bring a proud Protestant Dutchman and a shy Irish Catholic girl together, especially being that the lass from the Emerald Isle was 18 years younger than the gentleman from the land of windmills and wooden shoes? That magical and mystical force, of course, is love. In 1883, Catherine Cavanaugh, my great grandmother, came to America with her parents when she was only five years old. They first took up residence in Clifton. A few months later, the Cavanaugh family moved to Paterson. At the age of 16, Catherine worked in a silk mill in Paterson. Both of her parents also worked in the same silk mill. It was tough labor, requiring hard work for long hours. Somehow and someway, Catherine Cavanaugh met a Dutchman named Wesley Storms, who lived in a small farming town known as Beavertown. Wesley was a very shy, lonely widower, who lived alone in a very small home at the foothills of Hook Mountain. Wesley, my great grandfather, was 18 years older than Catherine, my great grandmother. Now at 68, I deeply regret that I did not ask my grandmother, Bertha Storms Mabey,

more about her mom and dad. However, I am ever so appreciative for the information that Grandma did share with me about her parents. Wesley Storms never did know his father. Wesley was born in 1860. Shortly after he was born, his father, William Storms, signed up with the Union Army. My great-great grandfather served in the 15th New Jersey Regiment. Sadly, he was killed in the Battle of Salem Church in May of 1863. It was a scar that was left upon Wesley’s heart, never to be healed for his entire lifetime. For Catherine Cavanaugh, working in a silk mill was very hard work. The men and women who worked in the silk mills in Paterson worked long hours for little pay. It was a tough life. Most of the people who worked in Paterson’s silk mills were immigrants. The Irish immigrants did not have it easy in the latter part of the nineteenth century. The prejudice against the Irish was very real in America. It’s painful to admit, but none-theless, there was very real prejudice against the Irish. In factories, stores, and other places of business, during the nineteenth century, it was not uncommon to see signs reading, “Irish need not apply.” Wesley Storms had a little farm in

Beavertown. The greatest mystery is how it came to be that my great grandmother met my great grandfather. I remember my grandmother, Bertha Storms, told me that her father had close friends, who were also friends with her mother’s parents. In light of their age difference, and the fact that Wesley Storms was Protestant and Catherine Cavanaugh was a devoted Catholic, it is truly

I had only been in the kitchen of that dear old home, for about 20 minutes. But in that short time, I could feel the presence of my great grandparents. I was a very sensitive child, with a vivid imagination. As I sat at Robert’s kitchen table, as his mom poured cold lemonade in glasses for us, I could imagine my grandmother sitting in that very same kitchen as a little girl, eating supper with her mom and dad. I live in Central Florida now. I don’t travel up to New Jersey that often any more. Roseland’s Running 4 Answers Benefits Alzheimer’s Research

C

By Evan Wechman arolyn Mastrangelo of Roseland remembers the pain her whole family went through almost two decades ago. At that time, her mother became ill from having early onset Alzheimer’s disease and the toll it took on her loved ones was almost too much to bear. These memories will be with her this coming April 30 at Harrison Field in Roseland. There, her organization, Running for Answers will be holding a 5K race and 2-mile run/walk to benefit the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund. This will be the 13th annual event which has raised well over $400,000 since its inception. Mastrangelo remembers fondly her mother, Pat Lepofsky, a registered nurse playing bridge around the house and always reading. However, when the Alzheimer’s illness hit her mother, they both knew things would take a quick turn for the worse. Her mother after a long battle, died in 2015, and Mastrangelo wants to make sure that other families don’t go through the same ordeal she was forced to endure. Mastrangelo, a professional fitness trainer and nutrition coach is aware of the ramifications of the disease. She recently said, “Alzheimer’s doesn’t just take away your memory, it takes away everything you are until it leaves just a shell.” Organizing the event has been no easy task for Mastrangelo who is the primary founder, chairperson, and fundraiser for the event. She said she has performed most of the work at her kitchen table, rather than a fancy office. However, she is grateful other people have helped her through the years. She appreciates even the smallest donations and still gets excited each year around this time of year. According to her, the event has 3 primary missions. The first is to obviously raise money and awareness, but the second and third goals are to have a great race and create a fun event that the community can gather around. In past races, she has had great sponsors who have held mini tricky trays and given balloons to all the children. Though the event seems to almost run effortlessly as each year passes, Mastrangelo is aware there is always a substantial amount of work involved. Her efforts began almost 15 years ago when she was looking for a race in New Jersey that benefitted Alzheimer’s. Unfortunately, she couldn’t find a single race, so she was determined to organize her own.

She also carefully selected the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund which she said gives everyone the best chanced to find a cure for this disease. Mastrangelo is proud that 100% of the donations go directly to research. “The brain is tricky, and they (Cure Alzheimer’s Fund) are coming to a lot of dead ends, but this is the right organization, and they are coming closer every year,” Mastrangelo said. In 2020, due to COVID there was no race, but the organization still worked hard and raised a significant amount of money for research. This year, the effects of COVID will be closely monitored by Mastrangelo. However, she is confident that this year’s event will be a success because it is not only outside, but she is determined to take any cautionary steps to ensure everyone’s safety. Mastrangelo who has had many dedicated supporters through the years is still looking to add some sponsors to make this event larger. She hopes for the race to expand outside just the immediate area and become a significant race in the state of New Jersey. Since the pandemic has affected many small businesses in the area, Mastrangelo wants local owners to know she remains both flexible and creative in finding partnerships that would work for all involved. However, she is aware every bit of help adds up to having a terrific event and said “I would like people to know that there are so many simple ways to help us: walk, run, donate, fundraise. Even easier than that is just spreading the word to others.” She can be contacted by interested parties through her website, www.Running4Answers.org. Though she is hoping for a big turnout, Mastrangelo, a mother of two daughters wants people to come away with a significant lesson about Alzheimer’s disease. One important fact that Mastrangelo wants people to be aware of is that this disease is more serious than many people think it is. She said, “it is not a key-losing disease.” By this, Mastrangelo emphasized that families should know that Alzheimer’s is more than just misplacing everyday items such as keys. Rather, it robs the whole family of time, memories, and is indeed very painful for all involved. “I don’t want to see anyone else go through this,” she said. “The idea that anyone else can get it is scary.”
