Livingston’s Newark Academy Hires New Athletic Director, Seth Lieberman, for 2022-23

W

By Jerry Del Priore hen Seth Lieberman decided to make a career move looking for an athletic director position, he wanted a school with a large sports program as well as to be closer to his family in Westchester, N.Y. Lieberman wound up interviewing with Newark Academy, a private coeducational day school which serves students in sixth through twelfth grades, in Livingston. He immediately felt a connection to, and at home with, the institution when he interviewed with the school’s administrators. “For me, I was looking for a bigger athletic program, and looking forward to being around my family in Hastingson-Hudson, in Westchester, New York,” said Lieberman, who will assume the position starting in July. “Once I interviewed with them, I knew that’s where I wanted to be. I feel everyone at the school has a passion for athletics. I’m really excited to work with the people already in place.” Newark Academy fits both touchstones for him: a school with a large sports program, as well as not being too far from where he grew up. Additionally, Newark Academy’s athletic program is historically

competitive, which, Lieberman said, fits the bill for the New York professional sports fan (Yankees and Giants) and Carolina Tarheel basketball enthusiast. Plus, he brings 25 years of experience as an athletic director and an expansive knowledge of sports to the table. Lieberman is currently the Director of Athletics, Health and Wellness at the Barrie School, a progressive independent school for students ages 12 months through Grade 12, in Silver Springs, Md. Moreover, Lieberman’s years of hard work have paid dividends for him. During the present school year, the 2022 Maryland District dubbed him the 2A Athletic Director of the Year and he is a finalist for the 2022 Maryland School Athletic Director Association’s Athletic Director of the Year award. Previously, Lieberman had served as the Director of Athletics at Saint Mary’s School (N.C.), Trinity School (N.Y.) and the Cannon School (N.C.). Academically, Lieberman earned his bachelor’s degree, with a double major in geography and sociology, from Clark University in Worcester, Mass., where he was also an Academic All-American student-athlete honor recipient as a swimmer. Also, he possesses a master’s degree in athletic administration from Springfield College (Mass.), where he

was the head coach of the women’s rugby team. With all of his vast experience, impressive academic credentials and comprehensive athletic knowledge, what does Lieberman plan to bring to the Newark Academy Minutemen sports program? “I’m really excited to get started,” said Lieberman, who taught physical education, health and finance in the past. “I’m excited to share my knowledge with the student-athletes, and help mentor coaches. I’ll learn more about the program’s needs when I get there, of course. But I’m looking forward to being a part of the team. I would not be a good athletic director if I wasn’t a team player.”
