Livingston’s Newark Academy Hires New Athletic Director, Seth Lieberman, for 2022-23
W
By Jerry Del Priore hen Seth Lieberman decided to make a career move looking for an athletic director position, he wanted a school with a large sports program as well as to be closer to his family in Westchester, N.Y. Lieberman wound up interviewing with Newark Academy, a private coeducational day school which serves students in sixth through twelfth grades, in Livingston. He immediately felt a connection to, and at home with, the institution when he interviewed with the school’s administrators. “For me, I was looking for a bigger athletic program, and looking forward to being around my family in Hastingson-Hudson, in Westchester, New York,” said Lieberman, who will assume the position starting in July. “Once I interviewed with them, I knew that’s where I wanted to be. I feel everyone at the school has a passion for athletics. I’m really excited to work with the people already in place.” Newark Academy fits both touchstones for him: a school with a large sports program, as well as not being too far from where he grew up. Additionally, Newark Academy’s athletic program is historically
competitive, which, Lieberman said, fits the bill for the New York professional sports fan (Yankees and Giants) and Carolina Tarheel basketball enthusiast. Plus, he brings 25 years of experience as an athletic director and an expansive knowledge of sports to the table. Lieberman is currently the Director of Athletics, Health and Wellness at the Barrie School, a progressive independent school for students ages 12 months through Grade 12, in Silver Springs, Md. Moreover, Lieberman’s years of hard work have paid dividends for him. During the present school year, the 2022 Maryland District dubbed him the 2A Athletic Director of the Year and he is a finalist for the 2022 Maryland School Athletic Director Association’s Athletic Director of the Year award. Previously, Lieberman had served as the Director of Athletics at Saint Mary’s School (N.C.), Trinity School (N.Y.) and the Cannon School (N.C.). Academically, Lieberman earned his bachelor’s degree, with a double major in geography and sociology, from Clark University in Worcester, Mass., where he was also an Academic All-American student-athlete honor recipient as a swimmer. Also, he possesses a master’s degree in athletic administration from Springfield College (Mass.), where he
was the head coach of the women’s rugby team. With all of his vast experience, impressive academic credentials and comprehensive athletic knowledge, what does Lieberman plan to bring to the Newark Academy Minutemen sports program? “I’m really excited to get started,” said Lieberman, who taught physical education, health and finance in the past. “I’m excited to share my knowledge with the student-athletes, and help mentor coaches. I’ll learn more about the program’s needs when I get there, of course. But I’m looking forward to being a part of the team. I would not be a good athletic director if I wasn’t a team player.”

New Jersey Authors Contribute to A Book For Our Time - VOICES-19: Their Legacies Live On
A
uthor Brenda E. Cortez announced the upcoming release of a collection of stories celebrating our loved ones, and the life and legacies they left behind. Cortez was inspired to create this book after her best-friend, and contributing coauthor, Jean Sime, (Wayne, NJ resident), lost her sister, Vivian, to COVID on April 16, 2020. “Voices-19” brings awareness and shines an important light on the faces and names lost during this ongoing pandemic – humanizing the numbers, the souls lost, and those left behind to grieve. “Voices-19” was released April 26, and is available online. In this heartfelt collection, 19 contributing authors bravely pay tribute to those they lost and share the impact they made. Their loved ones’ legacies will live on forever; they will never be forgotten. This book is a tribute to all the lives lost during this difficult time. These beautifully written stories help humanize the losses behind the numbers. Each chapter is a celebration of life remembering our moms, dads, sisters, brothers, grandparents, and our children. Cortez is the author of ‘Because of Organ Donation’
and has authored nine children’s books, including “My Mom is Having Surgery: A Kidney Story,” and the “Howl the Owl®” children’s book series. Howl is an acronym for “Help Others With Love” and his stories focus on kindness, helping others, and organ donation. Voices-19 is published by BC Books, LLC.

Livingston’s Earl Carr Connects with Cultural Roots and 13 Global Scholars for Academic Book
W
By Jillian Risberg ith such a fluid time of deep bitterness in US-China relations, 13 diverse voices from across the globe weigh in, to make for a powerful publishing experience. Earl Carr is editor of the new book, From Trump to Biden and Beyond: Reimagining US–China Relations. “It can make a broad impact on people who desperately need an informed view about China and the most important bilateral relationship in the world — United States and China,” Carr says he is thankful for the platform. His experts, including former Japanese diplomat Junya Ishii and Dr. Kwei-Bo Huang (served at Taiwan National Security Council) cover a variety of topics and regions: from Latin America and the Caribbean, to East Asia, to the Middle East, to the continent of Africa. They all wanted to pen a piece that would be relevant even a year or two later. If the Chief Global Strategist advised Pres. Biden on how to rectify policy gaps -- he says to look at the pinnacle of the Cold War between US and Russia, they couldn’t agree on who should possess nuclear weapons, but agreed to eradicate Polio. It was the first time US scientists worked constructively with scientists from Russia, as well as through the United Nations.

of our largest trade deficits ever.” It means a lot to Carr to share From Trump to Biden with the public. “China has always used parody with the US, not only to legitimize the Chinese Communist Party but also for China’s own modernization development,” the global strategist says this parody first played out in the 1960s, when China strived/achieved to be a nuclear power on par with the US. “Today, China has over 1,000 nuclear warheads in their arsenal. You saw this parody take place in the 1980s; China wanted to be accepted in the World Trade Organization, which it did, and now that parody plays out in the realm of 5G, artificial intelligence and big data.” He observed China over the last 25+ years, and Carr says there is this notion of parody and its importance to Chinese foreign policy establishment. China has invested significantly in the continent of Africa (infrastructure projects, lending/investment opportunities), according to the thought leader because they got the demographics right when the US and Western Europe got it wrong. He says of countries that develop to middle income, there’s potential for Africa. “Similar to the Caribbean and Latin America, whereas the US had historically regarded central and Latin America as its own ‘backyard.’ The Chinese went in a formidable
way, signing MOUs (memorandums of understanding) along the Belt and Road Initiative, which resonated with countries,” says Carr. He has also noticed an imbalance. There are 10,000 (the number continues to decline) American students who study in China each year, while 290,000 Chinese students study in the US. “If we want to have more experts who understand China — a bridge between the United States and China — we need to be able to invest effectively,” the global strategist says he’s a proponent of American students studying abroad. “Because they come back fundamentally changed and continued on page 8

“When we have a common vision and purpose we do more with respect to policy,” says the CEO/author. “It makes sense for us to set up environmental technology cooperation between the United States and China, a clear area where both have a vested interest.” According to the thought leader, there are other ways where we can cooperate… on global health issues and transnational crime. Carr says cooperation and competition have always defined US/China relations, since its inception in diplomatic relations in 1979. “The United States needs to engage China in a carefully calibrated (way) to manage effectively both cooperation and competition,” the global strategist says whenever there is more emphasis on one or the other something goes awry. Carr says the last years of the Trump administration were about: ‘let’s focus on a trade war with China.’ Emphasis on the competitive aspects is a disservice to American business people, working in China and our farmers, whose products get taxes levied on them. All are caught up in a trade war. “The trade war was initiated under the pretext it would decrease our trade deficit with China,” says the author. “After four years we found our trade deficit with China only got larger, and we are currently at one

Carr Connects...
Over 30 Years of Experience
continued from page 6 vise/versa… good for the United States and China.” The book’s contributors also found a roughly eight percent decline in US Embassies diplomatic presence abroad, with a seven percent increase for China’s diplomatic efforts abroad. “And what are the broader implications for our soft power because our diplomatic posts play such an important role, in terms of economics, culture politics,” says Carr. According to the global strategist, how we shape and engage China is imperative, not just for his kid’s generation — but grandkids and great-grandkids. He fondly recalls studying abroad in China, circa 1998. “I would sneak into the Chinese dorms (they separated Chinese/foreign students)… and talk with the students all night,” the author says they were hungry to find out about American presidents and the judicial process. “Powerful (exchange) because oftentimes I was the only American they had ever interacted with.” Carr is proud of his Chinese heritage, while an equally proud American. He is both black (his father’s from Jamaica) and half Chinese (on his mom’s side)… born in Panama, raised in New York City. “Being an effective bridge between the
US and China, sharing information and perspectives with policy makers (so they can) make informed decisions — is something I’m really proud of,” says the thought leader. At the helm of his first title (indicative of cultures that represent Carr and his personal narrative) was an intense nine-month journey. “When you write from 11 at night to 2 am (for months) and still work a full-time job — this is like my COVID project in a way,” the author says he was blessed when publisher Palgrave Macmillan read one of his publications in Forbes and reached out. It’s been a surreal experience. “The book has led to me starting my own company and a book tour around the US and globally,” the thought leader says it’s published in over 30+ US (and world) libraries, including Jamaica, Netherlands, Europe, Israel. He is inspired by late Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s words. “I hope Americans understand that US foreign policy is fundamentally linked to domestic policy,” the global strategist says it’s key to living in this globalized, interconnected community. From Trump to Biden and Beyond: Reimagining US–China Relations first ed. 2021 is available on Amazon.com.

Is Your Supermarket Doing Enough to Address the Plastic Pollution Crisis?
lastic pollution is not just an eyesore. According to environmental experts, it also affects marine species, accelerates climate change and adversely impacts human health, particularly in low-income communities near plastic production sites, which face greater exposure to toxins and waste and bear the brunt of the impacts of improper plastic disposal and incineration. A new report highlights the role supermarkets play in the plastic pollution crisis. The second ranking of 20 U.S. grocery retailers’ efforts to reduce single-use plastics from Greenpeace USA finds that all of the supermarket chains in the report are failing to adequately address the plastic pollution crisis, and that even retailers publicly committed to eliminating single-use plastic could be doing more to prioritize their efforts, engage with suppliers, and offer transparency with customers and the broader public. “There is not a single place that individuals are confronted with more single-use plastic than in our grocery stores, yet companies continue to move at
a snail’s pace on plastic reduction efforts,” says Greenpeace USA oceans campaign director, John Hocevar. “It is time to turn this around with action.” While Hocevar stresses that governmental policy shifts and the actions of major corporations will be necessary to move the needle, individuals can also get involved. Beyond opting for reusable bags and containers at the store, consumers can make their voice heard by talking to their local grocery stores about phasing out single-use plastics, writing to larger companies urging them to move in a better direction and asking their elected officials to support plastic bans. They can also learn more by reading the full report at greenpeace.org. “Every piece of plastic that comes through a grocery store ends up polluting the environment, and harming our health,” says Hocevar. “We need to see retailers acting now to dramatically reduce their plastic footprints and move from singleuse packaging to reuse and package free approaches.” (StatePoint)

R
outine exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Significant exercise benefits all parts of the body, including the heart. In fact, the American Heart Association urges individuals to heed exercise recommendations from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. Those guidelines indicate that adults should get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity) and pair it with moderate- to highintensity strength training activities at least twice per week. Many individuals have no problem taking that advice to heart, and some even go above and beyond. While exceeding exercise guidelines isn’t necessarily detrimental to individuals’ overall health, that doesn’t mean it’s not important to be careful and incorporate routine days of rest into a workout regimen. Devoted athletes may find it hard to know when to step back and take a breather. In such instances, learning the warning signs for fitness fatigue can be invaluable. Routine breaks give muscles time to heal, which can improve performance and reduce injury risk. The National Library
of Medicine notes that these are some common signs of fitness fatigue. • An inability to perform at the same level • Needing longer periods of rest • Feeling tired • Depression, which can include feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness, or hopelessness • Mood swings or irritability • Difficulty sleeping • Muscle soreness or a feeling that limbs are heavy • The presence of overuse injuries, which include shoulder impingement, tennis elbow and stress fractures • Loss of motivation • More frequent colds • Unexplained weight loss • Anxiety Individuals who want to keep going in the face of fitness fatigue should remind themselves of why they exercise. Various factors motivate people to exercise regularly, but that motivation is often rooted in a desire to be as healthy as possible. Overdoing it compromises individuals’ physical and mental health, which underscores the importance of rest and how it’s vital to a successful workout regimen.

Umai Sushi and Steakhouse Brings Japanese Flavors to Verona
U
By Megan Roche mai Sushi and Steakhouse, now open at 18 Grove Ave in Verona, brings it share of the Japanese food and culture to the area. The new restaurant serves high end sushi, Omakase style. Omakase roughly translates to ‘I’ll leave it up to you.’ Customers leave their order up to the chef, letting the chef decide which items to serve. Chefs present food from the lightest course to the heaviest course. At Umai Sushi and Steakhouse, there are also perks. “If you eat omakase at the bar 5 times, you’ll get your own personalized chop sticks to be displayed and store for your subsequent visits,” Umai Sushi and Steakhouse owner, Allen Perchonok, shared. Perchonok originally worked in the
fashion industry in New York City. He designed high end furs, shearlings and alligator jackets. He’s worked with designers from Coach to Brandon Maxwell. He left the fashion industry pre pandemic and saw the location in Verona and knew it was the perfect spot to open Umai Sushi and Steakhouse. While he is a classically trained French chef, sushi is one of Perchonok’s favorite cuisines. Much of Perchonok’s ingredients even come straight from the country of Japan itself. “Delicious and fresh, 3/4 of the food is delivered every morning from Japan and prepared for order,” Perchonok says. The sushi bar is modeled after some of the best in New York City. Umai Sushi and Steakhouse is open Wednesday through Sunday, 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Dinner reservations are required. Former Livingston Lancer Baseball Star Now Starring at Stevens Institute
F
By Steve Sears or Brett Mendez, his baseball life started like most wannabe second basemen. “Even from my Little League days,” Mendez says, “in my earliest memories I can remember just taking ground balls in my backyard, even in my house.” Mendez has always prided himself on his defense, but it’s his offensive skills that drives opponents crazy. Mendez, a senior member of the Stevens (Institute of Technology) Ducks baseball team, had a terrific junior season in 2021. He started 35 games, and led the team with a .361 batting average, 43 hits, 28 walks, and a .480 on base percentage. And, as a rejoinder to being first at bat for the Ducks after the first few games of the season, he also was tied for the club lead with eight
stolen bases and scored 29 runs. Last spring, he was named All-Honorable Mention in the MAC Freedom Conference. Mendez, a 2018 graduate of Livingston High School, saw action as a freshman in 2019 when he batted .167 while starting 21 games, but in 2020, when also batted .167 but in just 10 games, the Ducks season was cut short by the COVID pandemic. He made up for lost time last year. “Coming off the COVID year, it was interesting to see where we were going to go from there,” he says. “There was still a lot of uncertainty about the season. Before the season was canceled in 2020, I had already gotten the second base job, but then going into 2021 I was still competing for innings and a spot, so playing well and gaining a spot was really important for me.”
When the season began, he was getting on base often, but from the ninth spot in the lineup. Then, as previously mentioned, he was thrust into the leadoff position early on, and he flourished. “I was seeing pitches really well once the weather started warming up. That always helps me. We started really early in February, so it’s really cold for most of the season. Once the weather starts warming up, that’s always good, and we really just took off from there.” Thus far in 2022, Mendez and the Ducks have picked up right where he left off last year. “We’re playing really well,” Mendez says. “We’re second in the conference right now, we’re starting to get healthy, the bats are starting to heat up, and we’re looking forward to rolling into the playoffs and making another run
at it. And then, for me personally, I’m playing pretty well, getting on base, hitting for average again, basically doing my job at the top of the lineup to do what I can to score as many runs as I can.” Mendez led the Livingston Lancers to a Super Essex Conference title, as well as a Greater Newark Tournament championship over Nutley, 8 – 3, in 2018. Mendez was named First Team All-Conference, First Team All-Essex County, and First Team All-State Group 4 while batting .452 that season. “Livingston High School prides itself on its baseball program,” Mendez says, speaking about the Lancer diamond legacy. “I think everyone who comes to play baseball at the high school knows the history, and that we’re here to win. That 2018 team in my senior year was very

talented. There was a lot of very talented people that helped win that county championship, and I think
it’s the combination of the coaching and the players at Livingston High School that really gets us the win.”

IMPLANT DENTISTRY Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in. Since that loose upper denture was made, she had been unhappy with the situation. She inquired about the possibility of a fixed bridge supported by implants. After careful examination, Dr. Chiu decided she would need very extensive bone repair in her sinuses, done in stages to allow her to have implants placed. This could take two years, because she is already wearing a removable denture. It interferes with the normal bone repair process in the other areas of her upper jaw. That’s why planning ahead is crucial when it comes to a treatment of an implant-supported fixed bridge, especially before the teeth are extracted. Often times, a lot of the “prep” work is done while a couple of teeth remain in the mouth to hold up a fixed temporary appliance. This allows for a faster healing time and more optimal placement of implants to support a fixed bridge. Come and visit Dr. Chiu, who has placed and restored implant-supported fixed
and removable prosthesis for many years. Your comfort and convenience are always Dr. Chiu’s top priorities. To know more about these procedures, please call (973) 377-0224. We are always happy to answer any questions you may have. To receive a COMPLEMENTARY IMPLANT CONSULTATION, simply mention this article during your appointment. Offer expires June 30, 2022

HOME ZONE
A
By Andrea Hoffmann nswers to your home and real estate questions. Q: I’m selling my home and my basement has always been dry except once, during a hurricane, when it flooded. Do I have to disclose that to potential buyers? I’m worried it might scare people away from an otherwise really great home. A: Even if your basement has only flooded once, you absolutely must tell potential buyers about it. When you list your home for sale, you’ll fill out a Seller’s Disclosure. That document will ask many questions about the home’s history and condition. It’s your responsibility as a seller to answer every question truthfully and transparently. Some questions may predate your ownership, so it’s possible you honestly may not know all the answers if the previous seller never disclosed that information to you. However, if you’ve ever been told about an issue or experienced one yourself, you must disclose it. Failing to do so could result in a headache––or even a lawsuit––later. Q: I go to a lot of open houses because I love real estate. Why do agents always ask me if I’m working with someone?
A: Real estate agents are expected to operate ethically. Failing to do so could result in a suspension (or worse) of our state licensing. Part of those ethics is to avoid knowingly poaching clients from one another. If you’ve been out to see homes with a Realtor, even if you haven’t signed an exclusive agreement with them, it’s unethical for another Realtor to regularly communicate with you, send you listings, or show you homes without letting the first agent know. For this reason, agents at open houses often ask if you’re working with someone so they know if it’s appropriate for them to communicate with you beyond the open house. Some agents may require you to sign an exclusive buyer’s agent agreement with them for a certain period of time so there are no misunderstandings. Q: My siblings and I are selling our parents’ home in an estate sale. Our agent suggested we remove all the furnishings so the house “shows better”. Is this really necessary? A: It’s not technically necessary, but doing so might help you garner a significantly higher sale price. If your parents’ furnishings are exceedingly “wellcontinued on page 19

A Brunch Spread... continued from page 20 Remove steak from packaging and set aside 10 minutes. Once steak reaches room temperature, heat pan over medium-high heat. Rub steak with oil and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Cook until medium-rare, approximately 3-4 minutes each side. Remove from pan and cover loosely with tinfoil to rest 5 minutes. Reduce heat to medium and add splash of oil. Add onion; cook 1 minute. Add red bell pepper and mushrooms; cook 1 minute. Add cumin, paprika and chili powder; stir through. When veggies are tender (about 2 minutes), add tomato and cook until soft. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. In large bowl, whisk eggs, milk and salt and pepper, to taste. Heat pan to medium heat and add splash of oil. Pour egg mixture into pan and cook, lifting and folding eggs until thickened and
no visible liquid egg remains. Do not stir constantly. Lay tortillas on flat surface or plate. In center of tortilla, add cooked veggies and top with thinly sliced beef. Add handful of spinach, scrambled eggs, crumbled feta, cilantro and avocado. Fold bottom of tortilla and roll. Serve with lime wedges and hot sauce, if desired. Dine on Deliciously Sweet Doughnuts Brunch is never complete without something sweet to cap off the morning feast, and doughnuts are often the perfect complement to an array of main courses. These Lemon Ricotta Doughnuts pair the bite-sized morsels with lemon curd (if that suits your style) for a sweet-tart combination. They’re made using Domino Golden Sugar, which is made from pure cane sugar and is less processed than white granulated sugar, as one you can always trust in your favorite recipes. It works cup-for-cup just like white sugar but with a golden color and distinct hint of molasses flavor.
out of hot oil. In bowl, mix flour, 3/4 cup sugar, baking powder and salt. Add lemon zest, eggs, ricotta cheese and vanilla extract; mix until well combined. Use ice cream scoop to scoop small amounts dough into oil, 4-5 pieces at a time. Fry each batch until golden brown, about 7 minutes. Keep oil at or near 350 F; if oil is too hot, doughnuts will turn golden brown but centers may still be raw. Remove from oil and drain in paper towel. Repeat with remaining dough. While still hot, toss doughnuts with remaining sugar. To make lemon curd, if desired: In large bowl of stand mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and egg yolks, one at a time. Add lemon zest, lemon juice and salt. Transfer mixture to saucepan and cook at low-medium heat until thick and creamy, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and let cool before serving with doughnuts.

Local Citizens Groups Can Apply for Grants to Protect Environmental and Cultural Treasures in NJ Highlands
L
ocal citizen groups fighting to protect water, other environmental resources, and cultural and historic treasures in northern New Jersey’s Highlands Region are invited to apply for grants up to $5000 through the New Jersey Highlands Coalition’s 2022 Small Grants Program. Applications must be received by June 21, 2022. Grants will be presented on October 12 at the N.J. Highlands Coalition’s 2022 Annual Meeting. “Our Small Grants Program is one of the unique strengths of the Highlands Coalition,” said Julia Somers, Executive Director. “We work at the state and regional levels, but most members of our coalition are from local grassroots groups who are in touch with breaking issues in their communities. They’re our early warning system for threats such as giant warehouses proposed on prime farmland. In addition to giving these groups financial assistance that primes the pump for their own fund-raising, we also offer counseling based on our hard-won experience.” Historic projects include “brick-andmortar” projects for specific historic sites or districts. This is the sixteenth year of the Coalition’s Small Grants Program for environmental projects and the eighth year for projects that protect cultural, historic, and archaeological resources in the Highlands, an important part of the Highlands Regional Master Plan. Grassroots organizations are defined as non-governmental organizations with a total annual operating budget of less than $200,000. It is not necessary that the organization be incorporated. To be eligible to apply for a grant, an organization must become a member of the Coalition, but dues are as low as $20 a year. Grants from the Highlands Coalition cannot be used for political purposes. A grassroots group may apply for one or more grants, either environmental, cultural or components of both. But the total amount requested by any one organization cannot exceed $5000. Grant applications should meet at least
one of the following five criteria, with the items at the top getting more weight than those below: Projects that focus on developing a stronger Highlands Regional Master Plan (RMP), and/or implementation of the RMP. For example, projects that identify, map, or verify mapped Highlands natural or cultural resources or monitor the implementation of RMP standards at the local level; projects that advocate for and result in municipal conformance with the RMP; Projects that would establish a precedent advancing strong environmental or cultural protection in the Highlands. For example, hiring a consultant to help achieve the most environmentally protective decision by NJDEP, the Highlands Council, or other regulatory bodies on a Highlands matter, or for meeting local affordable housing needs; Projects that may not help set a precedent, but would assist an organization to fight against a development in the Highlands Region – such as residential, commercial, agribusiness projects, etc. – that seriously threatens or damages natural or cultural resources in the Region; Projects that support capacity building of Highlands Region grassroots organizations, for example, a membership mailing, a strategic planning exercise, a workshop, conference or public educational event, etc.; Projects that educate about Highlands water and resources, and/or increase public awareness of the use and conservation of Highlands water. Applicants are advised to view the full guidelines for the program on the Coalition’s website, particularly for cultural and historic grant components which have very detailed requirements. Go to www.njhighlandscoalition.org. On the menu bar at the top, place your cursor on “Programs,” then click “Small Grants” in the dropdown menu. To join the Coalition, place cursor on “Join Us,” then click on “Organization Membership.”

Tree Talk - 4 Tips for Planting Trees
rees are virtually everywhere you turn, from your own backyard to nearby parks and forests where you enjoy hiking. They provide shade and beauty, and some even bear fruit. Beyond all the immediate benefits, you may be surprised to discover trees are also a critical key to the future. These facts and tips from the book “Now is the Time for Trees” offer practical insight on the importance of trees and how to nurture one from selection to planting and beyond. A compelling and ever-growing body of evidence generated by scientists, health care professionals, conservationists, humanitarians and both public and private corporations supports the critical importance of trees and their impact on the human condition. Trees filter pollutants out of the air and water and provide protection for people and communities from dangerous heat and flooding. They lower urban temperatures, reduce energy bills and sequester carbon to slow the rate of climate change. When you plant a tree in your yard or neighborhood, that tree goes to work filtering out pollutants, intercepting stormwater and capturing carbon. With proper placement, that tree can also help lower household energy use by as much as 20%. You can engage in the tree planting movement and make a difference by planting trees around your home and surrounding community with these tips. Consider the Growing Region Choosing a tree that will flourish in your growing region is fundamental to becoming a successful tree planter. Start by getting familiar with the growing conditions of your planting site, including factors like sunlight, soil condition and room to grow. The amount of available sunlight at your planting location
will determine which tree species will be successful. Most trees require full sunlight for proper growth and flowering. Some do well in (or even prefer) partial or light shade, but few perform well in dense shade. Before you plant, get your soil tested by a lab to evaluate what’s happening underground. Test results, which are usually returned in a couple of weeks, provide a complete analysis of nutrients, possible contamination and pH (alkalinity or acidity), as well as directions for correcting problems. Be conscious of overhead or underground utilities, pavement, buildings, other trees, traffic intersections and other factors that may impact your planting space. Shopping for a Tree When choosing which kind of tree to plant, be conscious of details like size, flowering, color (including how colors may vary through the seasons) and your view from inside the house. While shopping, you can rely on plant labels to learn details about a tree’s growth pattern, sun requirements, watering needs and soil requirements. Two common styles of trees are container-grown trees, which spend their entire nursery lives growing in a container, and ball-and-burlap trees, which grow in the ground until they achieve a targeted size. A well-tended container-grown tree has been carefully monitored and moved into larger containers as the plant grows. Be wary of a tree with roots that circle or twist within the container, which may cause roots to die. For a ball-andburlap tree, look for a firm, securely tied root ball that is large enough to support the mature tree; it should be about 10-12 inches wide for every inch of trunk diameter. things you can do to get your tree off to a strong start. Before you plant, make sure your tree is thoroughly hydrated by watering the container or root ball several hours before proceeding. Celebrating Memorial Day around Northern New Jersey By Elsie Walker At 3pm on May 30th, Americans are asked to a observe a moment of silence. As noted on the site of the Memorial Day organization, “The National Moment of Remembrance was created [in 2000] by President William Clinton …to encourage Americans everywhere, to pause for one minute at 3:00 p.m. (local time) on Memorial Day, to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all.” Memorial Day dates back to just after the Civil War. It has come to mean a variety of things, but at the heart of the day is remembering those men and women, now gone, who served this country. “Memorial Day means to me a lasting friendship. My dad was in the Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge [World War II]. He served with a man from North Carolina named Robert L. McGaha (known as R.L.). They became fast friends. When the war was over, dad and R.L. came home, but R.L. made the Army a career. My parents and siblings, and myself in my younger years, made trips to North Carolina to visit with the McGaha’s. Although my Dad and R.L. are now in heaven, our family has stayed close with the McGaha family for over 65 years,” shared Amanda Rush of Netcong.
Remembering friendships formed during service and honoring those who died was probably part of what was on the mind of those who laid the seeds for Memorial Day. According to a publication put out by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs titled, “The Origins of Memorial Day”, many local communities held ceremonies of remembrance for the fallen shortly after the end of the Civil War. Then, “Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared it should be May 30. It is believed the date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.” However, history.com gives another reason why that date was chosen, “The date of Decoration Day as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.” For many years, the day continued to be known as Decoration Day. It was not an official national holiday, but was marked around the country. In its early days, the focus was on those who died in the Civil War. However, as time passed and the country got into

other wars, the focus changed, as noted by history.com, “By the late 19th century, many communities across the country had begun to celebrate [it as] Memorial Day, and after World War I, observers began to honor the dead of all of America’s wars…. in 1968,
Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. The change went into effect in 1971. The continued on page 25

Celebrating Memorial Day... continued from page 24 same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.” Over the years, for many families who lost loved ones who served in the military, special traditions became associated with Memorial Day. Sue Labelle, of Madison, recalled the traditions of her family. Those traditions would start before Memorial Day by putting flowers on family graves in Succasunna and then attending a special church service. “On Memorial Day itself, we would attend the Roxbury parade and the ceremony held at Horseshoe Lake Park. My parents always felt that the ceremonies in Roxbury were not to be missed. The ceremony would take place next to the beautiful Roxbury Veteran’s Memorial, which was dedicated twenty years ago on November 11, 2001. The names engraved on the bronze plaques of the memorial include my father, Ken, his brother, Hugh, and all the other veterans of WWII from Roxbury.” The Roxbury Veterans Memorial is located on Eyland Avenue at the Horseshoe Lake Baseball Field. Many towns have memorials. For example, Netcong has a memorial located on Route 183 which is dedicated to those local residents who lost their lives serving in World War I and World War II, while at the intersection of Willow Grove Road and Main
Street in Hackettstown is a Civil War memorial monument. Searching the historical marker database (www.hmdb.org), people can look for memorials in their area. Another way the fallen have been remembered is through street blades, such as the one put up this past fall in Roxbury for Hugh Mooney who died during World War II. “On Memorial Day you can honor the fallen by attending memorial services within your community or laying flowers and planting flags on graves at your local Veterans cemetery. Veterans Day is an opportunity to do the same, but it is also an appropriate time to show your appreciation to Veteran friends and family. You can also recognize Veterans Day by flying the American flag outside your home, visiting or volunteering at a Veteran facility, attending a local event, and, of course, thanking Veterans and their families for their service,” shared Kenneth Steffan, of Long Valley, Major, U.S. Air Force/ New Jersey Air National Guard, retired. Chris Fallon, of Long Valley, whose three sons served in the military, added there is a memorial at Lyons VA Hospital which reminds people of the sacrifices of those wounded in war. Articles on the history of Memorial Day note how the holiday has evolved with many people thinking of the day as the unofficial

first day of summer, a day off from work, and a time of picnics and parades. However, at the heart of Memorial Day is the remembrance of those, now gone, who served in this country’s military. The Rev. Hazel Thomas Shue, of Budd Lake, grew up in a military family. She served as a Chaplain in the US Navy from 19821996 and will tell you she was honored to do so. As she thought about Memorial Day, she reflected how she’s marked it and on something said at a funeral last month for a retired colonel: “Memorial Day was always significant. My parents referred to it as Decoration Day, its original name. We flew the flag, wore patriotic colors and remembered the ‘men’ who served and died. Beginning
in 1982, when I became a Navy Chaplain, I participated in many Memorial Day ceremonies. Recently, I attended a Committal Service for a Retired Army Colonel at Arlington National Cemetery. The person in charge said, ‘while burial here is no monetary cost, none of these graves are free. Each of them has been earned with patriotism and sacrifice.’ That is the true meaning of Memorial Day.”

Loosening the soil on the sides of the hole allows roots to easily expand and establish faster, but don’t disturb soil at the bottom of the hole. Once the tree is positioned, replace the soil while firmly but gently tamping the original soil around the base of the root ball to stabilize it. Create a water-holding basin around the tree by building up a ring of soil and water to settle roots. Spread protective mulch 2-4 inches deep in a 3-foot diameter around the base of the tree, but not touching the trunk. Find more tips to successfully plant and care for your trees at arborday.org. A Handy Guide for Planting Trees A rally cry against climate change, “Now is the Time for Trees” is an inspirational and informative guide that explains the important role trees can play in preserving the environment. Author Dan Lambe, CEO of the Arbor Day Foundation, offers compelling reasons to plant more trees while providing simple, actionable steps to get involved, choose the right tree and achieve planting success. For
each book sold, the foundation will plant a tree in a forest in need. Pick up a copy wherever books are sold or visit arborday.org/TimeforTreesBook. The Power of Trees From backyards to tropical rain forests, trees provide the necessities of life. Trees clean air and water, provide habitats for wildlife, connect communities and support human health. Trees are a proven affordable, natural way to pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Trees filter water and slow storm surge and flooding in cities. Trees provide shade, cooling cities by up to 10 degrees, which can help prevent heat-related deaths. Neighborhood trees can reduce stress, improve overall health in children and encourage physical activity. Trees support wildlife and aquatic life by providing habitats and helping keep waterways healthy, which ensures ecosystem balance and promotes biodiversity. Trees and other forest life work together to ensure a clean source of drinking water, buffer against extreme weather, provide medicines, offer outdoor recreation and enrich human culture.

A Moment in Time from May of 1959: Blessed Be, Earl’s Bountiful Rose Bush
I
By Richard Mabey Jr. n May of 1959, I was just four years old. At the time we lived on Madeline Avenue in Clifton. Every Saturday, my mom, my dad, my sister Patti, and myself would take the long ride to a town called Lincoln Park, to have dinner at the old Mabey Homestead. There, my aunts and uncles, cousins, and grandparents would gather to visit my great grandmother, Dora Dolson Mabey. As we would enter the old Mabey Homestead, my three great aunts, Myrtle, Alberta, and Marie would be cooking a big turkey, complete with all the dressings and side dishes. The aroma of apple and blueberry pies would fill the air of the kitchen. At the age of four, I had thought of the old Mabey Homestead as a most magical place. There comes a time when God’s blessing descends upon a person, and a once-in-a-lifetime moment is etched into the marrow of bone, the fiber of heart, and the sacred core of soul. Such a moment in time, came to me in May of 1958. As my great aunts cooked the big feast for Saturday dinner, Great Grandma Mabey asked me to help her water her flowers. Flowers abounded upon the three-acre estate of the old Mabey Homestead. Flowers of all kinds flourished along Mabey Lane. Great Grandma Mabey would fill her watering can at the outside faucet, then begin her sojourn to water the scores of flowers that adorned her beautiful yard. What is that makes a moment so all unforgettable?
What is it about one sacred moment in time, that tears at the deepest chambers of our heart? O’ dear and cherished grand matriarch of another time, another place, so dearly does thou memory overfloweth in my heart. I remember it like it was yesterday, when Great Grandma Mabey came upon the big rose bush in the front yard of the old Mabey Homestead. The big rose bush grew and flourished between the big farmhouse and the little house, that once stood right at the corner of Mabey Lane and Route 202. “Dicky Jim, I planted this rose bush a long, long time ago. I planted it to honor your Great Uncle Earl. He was killed in World War I,” Great Grandma Mabey gently told me as she reverently watered the beautiful rose bush. I looked up to the eyes of Great Grandma, as her left hand held mine and her right hand held her watering can. Her eyes began to water as she sprinkled water upon Earl’s Rose Bush. “Dicky Jim, you would have liked your Great Uncle Earl. He would have liked you,” Great Grandma Mabey quietly said to me as she continued to sprinkle water on the beautiful rose bush. “I still miss my boy, Earl,” Great Grandma said as she still held my hand. We turned toward the old Mabey Homestead. We began walking to the front door. In cherished memory, I hold dear to my heart that sacred moment in time that I so dearly shared with my Great Grandma Mabey. Richard Mabey Jr. is a freelance writer. 5 Ways to Go Beyond Saying ‘Thank You’ to Military Service Members
ow do you thank someone who’s willing to risk their life for yours? When it comes to military service members and their families, advocates say there are many avenues for giving back meaningfully. As part of its “Give More Than Thanks” campaign celebrating 80 years of being the “Force Behind the Forces,” the United Service Organizations (USO) is inviting Americans to take actions that can make a tangible difference in the lives of service members. Here are five ideas to get you started: 1. Offer Skills or Services. Many service members face difficulties translating the skills and experience they acquired in the military to civilian jobs. Others struggle to adjust to the norms of the civilian workforce. Meanwhile, military spouses face professional obstacles throughout their service member’s career due to constant (c) USO Photos moves and deployments. Consider offering career advice or volunteering to guest lecture via military transition programs, such as the USO Pathfinder Transition Program, which equips service members and military spouses with tools needed to tackle the civilian job market. If you own a business or are a leader in a company, advocate for hiring qualified veterans. By offering practical support, you’re not only thanking service members, you’re helping build an inclusive community that bridges the civilian-military divide. 2. Send a Care Package. Care packages filled with treats and reminders of home let troops know that friends, family and the American people are thinking of them, even from thousands of miles away. However, the process of sending military care packages can be complicated. One easy way to do so is through USO Wishbook, where you can select a symbolic gift from a catalog to be sent to service members.
3. Support Military Spouses. Deployments are challenging for both service members and their spouses. Reach out to a military spouse whose service member is deployed and offer to cook their family dinner, or to pick up groceries. Simply reaching out to see how they are doing can also make all the difference. 4. Volunteer. Put your gratitude into action. Many USO locations across the country need volunteers who can facilitate programs and events – virtually or safely in person – that provide the military community with the support needed to carry out their missions. 5. Donate. The USO has been expressing its thanks to service members by supporting the troops since World War II. Today, that gratitude is shown in USO locations around the globe; these brick-and-mortar centers serve as a home away from home for deployed service members, and a place of respite for the larger military community. USO programming keeps deployed troops connected to loved ones, provides resources for service members and their families and boosts the morale of the entire military community through entertainment and other supportive events. Charitable donations to the USO help make that mission possible. To learn more about the USO’s work and discover additional ways to give more thanks, visit USO.org/morethanthanks and follow the conversation at #MoreThanThanks. “Our service members and their families’ sacrifices require us to rise to the challenge. All Americans, united in spirit and action, can change the lives and communities of our military, and thus, our country, for the better,” says J.D. Crouch II, CEO and president of the USO. A grill’s lifespan depends on many factors, including where and how it is stored and your climate. When it’s time to upgrade, you’ll have some decisions to make. The biggest is which heating style you prefer: gas, electric or charcoal. Other considerations include the overall size, number of burners and grate quality. Also be sure to compare available features, such as side burners and igniters, which are fairly common, and upgrades like lighting and fuel gauges. When to Update Home and Garden Goods Investing in quality products, properly maintaining and storing them all have an impact on how long they’ll stay in good working condition. As you tackle spring cleaning this year, take stock of your common home and garden equipment to determine what may need updating. Lawn Mower: If your mower needs a repair that exceeds its value, it’s time for a replacement. However, there may be other signs that an upgrade is warranted. Rough operation, frequent breakdowns or other indications of faulty performance deserve a second look. Before you buy new, remember to check your warranty to determine
whether repairs might be covered. Vacuum: Many homeowners discard their used vacuum when it stops picking up dirt and debris as efficiently as it did originally. Before you move on, be sure to check that performance issues aren’t the result of clogged hoses or a filter than needs cleaning or replacing. A belt may also be worn or need adjusting. Other signs it may be time to replace the vacuum include damaged or frayed cords, motor issues like overheating or making strange noises. Grill: A grill may last anywhere from 5-15 years, depending on the quality of the materials and how it is maintained. However, it’s common to have to replace parts along the way. Signs you may need a new grill include a firebox (the main enclosure) with cracks, rust or holes and burners that distribute heat unevenly. Damaged grates can affect even grilling if they’re warped or if they’re flaky or rusted, they can contaminate food. If you’re not able to replace the grates, or any other essential part, including hoses and connectors for a gas grill, you’ll be better off replacing the unit. (Family Features)
