Therapy Dogs Listen In At Library Story Time
By Cheryl Conway on’t think any educators would bark at reading aloud during summer months, but there are some dogs at the Livingston Library that just might. Young readers at the Livingston Public Library have been enjoying reading to therapy dogs at the PAWS To Read program. Held every Monday, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., since July, kids in grade one through four have been reading to the furry listeners in the library’s story room. A popular program held TES STIMA FREE E
at the library for about seven years, the last session for PAWS To Read this summer is set for Aug. 22. Organizers sometimes hold some scattered sessions during the school year as well to promote reading confidence. PAWS to Read is a highly recommended program to help readers improve in reading aloud and build confidence in new readers. “Dogs listen but don’t judge you,” says Latha Nair, a specialist in the Livingston Library Children’s Department for the past 15 FULLY

years. “A dog doesn’t correct you. You feel more comfortable reading to a dog.” Children sign up in advance to participate in 15 minute reading slots. The children’s department hosts two therapy dogs for the hour allowing eight readers per session, explains Nair. Students usually pick early reader books or easier books to read, in any topic they prefer. “It has to fit a 15-minute slot,” says Nair, so the book cannot be too long. Some kids bring a book from home or grab one off the library shelf. Readers are joined by a therapy dog and the dog owner who sits with the dog, as well as any parents, siblings or other family members of the reader who are invited to listen, says Nair. The free program is popular in the summer as kids have more time in the
summer in the evenings, unlike during the school year when kids have other activities and homework, says Nair. About 32 students participated in this summer reading program this year, adds Anna Coats, director of children’s services at
Livingston Library. “The parents do say the children enjoy it,” says Nair. It gives them “more confidence in their own reading skills. It certainly helps because we do have people coming in year after year to do it.” The program really

Different dogs have participated such as poodles, collies or labra-doodles, says Nair. “All are well trained and sweet in nature,” describes Nair. “They sit there and sometimes they stretch out or lie down or close their eyes. They seem to love the kids; they are very nice dogs.”
ical Center, Barnabas Center for Asian Health, Shop-Rite’s Registered Dietitian, Livingston Public Library, Alzheimer’s New Jersey, “Ask the Pharmacist,” Commission for the Blind, Seton Hall Nursing Students and many more. Questions, call the Nursing Division at 973-535-7961 ext. 243, 227 or 228.
Therapy dogs are the chosen animal for the program as “they are trained to not move around; they go into hospitals,” says Nair. “A cat might just run away. You can’t make a cat do what you want to do.” Certafied therapy dogs are also the most available for such a program, adds Coats. Service animals are also mostly dogs. Reading to other animals is always an option, but would be a different experience. “Even a turtle sounds cute, [but] they can bite if they get scared,” says Coats.

New View Media Group Applauds Some Area Schools For Ranking High On National List
By Cheryl Conway s schools throughout New Jersey take in the final weeks of summer before opening their doors to the 2016/2017 school year, some may take a bow to a job well done in making the country’s list as a top public high school. In a recent ranking released by “Newsweek, six public high schools in the coverage area of New View Media Group newspapers made the list for top 500 schools in the country. In the top 500, there were 51 N.J. public high schools listed among the nation’s best in Newsweek's 2016 list. Chatham High School ranked number 40; Madison High School ranked 115;
Hanover Park High School in East Hanover ranked 365; Livingston High School ranked 383; Whippany Park High School ranked 429; and Mt. Olive High School in Flanders, ranked 482. The school rankings are the result of research conducted by “Newsweek, along with Westat, an analytic firm. They used objective measurements to determine the annual ranking such as the ratio of full-time student enrollment/counselor; SAT/ACT scores; graduation rate; and college enrollment rate. Congratulations to all of the schools who made the 2016 list for top public high schools in the nation.

uthor Lisa Cocca plans to lead a discussion about her first published novel, “Providence,” on Thurs., Sept. 15, at the Books and Bites discussion group hosted by the National Council of Jewish Women, Essex County. “Providence” is a great summer read- the story of four generations of females forging a relationship built on need, love and respect. Often referred to as a coming-ofage tale in reverse, the story is told through the eyes of 16-year-old, Becky. Cocca, who grew up in New York and moved to New Jersey after college, works full time as a freelance writer and editor in educational publishing and in the evening writes what her heart desires. She has had a dozen books published for the school and library market and enjoys speaking at schools, libraries and community events. “Providence” was published as a young adult novel that gained a wide range of readership across the generations. It was chosen as the One Community One Book read for the Morristown Book Festival in 2014. Books and Bites, an ongoing book discussion group exploring novels and nonfiction writing, is held multiple times each year and brings community members together to discuss thought-provoking literature. he opening of Family Healing Center in Livingston is the culmination of a dream of its three principals. They recognized that solo practices, which can make a difference for clients, are often constrained by limited therapeutic resources. Rather, by establishing the Family Healing Center, each sought to help clients, as the mission statement says: to “find answers, relief, and ways to cope with the challenges of life.” These are accomplished through compassionate individual therapy, supportive group counseling and mental health education. Bill Powell, with more than 50 years’ experience as a licensed clinical therapist, has a wealth of experience working with marriage and committed couples,

John Berkowitz has been a licensed clinical therapist for more than 20 years and in private practice for 15 years. He brings a wide range of experience and therapeutic approaches to his clients, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Gestalt Psychology (GP) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). With his extensive training and his warm and compassionate approach, Berkowitz says he can help families and individuals find new ways to manage their lives and partnering with them to live brighter tomorrows. Get Hooked On The Nook At Livingston Library
By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta he Nook Tablet is more than the average eBook reader. Put together by Barnes & Noble, this unit functions as both a tablet and eBook reader in one. The unit allows the user to read books and magazines – and more! One can also check e-mails and play games. Plus, the battery life is exceptional so there is no need to worry about carrying around a charger all the time. The Nook program has been available to patrons of the Livingston Library since 2013. “It’s a way for us to expand e-content offering,” said Melissa Brisbin, supervisor of patron services. Brisbin, who came onboard at the Livingston Library two months ago, said that the Nooks are already pre-loaded with e-books – 23 titles for children, and 175 titles for adults. Nooks can go out for two weeks and be renewed if nobody is waiting for one. Do note that there is a $5 per day late fee. Nooks are available for Livingston residents and paid card holders - people who live out of town but pay for a library card. There is also a contract for patrons to sign to make them aware of the late fee and let them know replacement prices if something happened – which never did, according to Brisbin. “They’re great because with e-ink you can read in any kind of lighting,” said Brisbin. “There’s no glare, like you get
with an iPad. They are smaller than seven inches and easily fit into a decent sized purse. I find them easy to use and you don’t have to take a bunch of books with you when you’re traveling.” The Livingston Library buys their Nook selection directly from Barnes & Noble so they get the most popular titles. What’s trending now, according to Brisbin, is anything to do with Alexander Hamilton. And “Sweetbitter” by Stefanie Danler has a long waiting list for the physical copy. Even though Nooks and e-books are currently all the rage, Brisbin thinks hard copy will still always have a place. “I still like print,” she said, “but when I’m traveling, I take e-books. It’s easy to transport. They automatically bookmark, which is a nice feature since I always lose my place. You can enlarge the font if you’re visually impaired.” Brisbin doesn’t see any downfalls to e-books. She said, “Once the title is purchased, if you accidentally delete, you can always get it back. You can move titles on and off of it to free up space.” But when it comes to adult readers versus children, it seems adult readers are the ones who favor the Nook. “Ebooks just don’t replace the interaction of a real picture book,” said Brisbin. “Families still like to have the reading time.” All-in-all, Brisbin feels the library’s Nook program is great.
“People are always excited that they can take one out. They didn’t know about it [the program].” For more information on the Nook and titles offered, visit the reference desk at the Livingston Public Library or check out http://livingston.bccls.org/.

Learn Hands-On-History At Waterloo Village On Saturdays
he Canal Society of New Jersey, in concert with the New Jersey DEP, is continuing its Waterloo Canal Heritage Days series on Saturdays offering Morris County visitors to nearby Waterloo Village in Sussex County a glimpse of the region’s early days – as part of an every other Saturdays series this summer and early fall. The programs, which are altered a bit on each of the Heritage Days Saturdays, include hands-on history programs, a taste of original music, plus a narrated boat ride on the historic Morris Canal. Once a bustling inland port on the Morris Canal, Waterloo retains its character as a 19th Century canal Waterloo Village town. Since 2007, the Canal Society has gradually opened industrial and commercial buildings to interpret trades that were common throughout the 19 th Century. Waterloo Village is managed by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry within the state Department of Environmental Protection and is located in Alla-
muchy Mountain State Park. DEP’s Division of Parks and Forestry assumed stewardship of the Village in 2007 after the Waterloo ArtsFoundation, which had leased the Village from the state for about 40 years, went bankrupt. DEP has committed more than $600,000 to the Village’s restoration as part of its Sustainable Park Plan, an initiative designed to keep historic sites and state parks open by expanding programming and events to attract more residents and revenue. DEP has worked with The Canal Society of New Jersey, Friends of Waterloo, and Winakung at Waterloo to support the Village and its programming. Waterloo Village Heritage Days run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are scheduled for Sat. Aug. 27, Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 8, and Oct. 22. Waterloo Village is located in Stanhope. For more information on Waterloo Village, visit http://www.getoutsidenj.com/listings/Waterloo-Village.Stanhope.

ack-to-school season means more errands, more chores and more scheduled activities. It also means a dent in your wallet. But you can recapture some of your free time and save some money along the way by turning your smartphone or tablet into command central. Here are some smart smartphone strategies for families as they head back to school. • Say cheese: Be sure to capture all those toothy grins on camera! It doesn’t take much effort to go beyond posting your first day of school favorites to social media. You can order prints, photo cards, canvas prints and other personalized items from your phone, Facebook, or Instagram using the Walgreens mobile app, even turning your photos into personalized school supplies to send your kids to class in style. Prints will be ready within an hour and many other personalized photo products can be picked up the same day. • Be in touch: Have all the most important numbers you may need on speed dial: your children’s schools, doctors, babysitters, coaches and other caregivers. • Save time scoring deals: Back-toschool supplies like pencils, pens, notebooks and more can add up, especially if you have multiple kids heading to the classroom. Consult your current store of supplies and create a needed shopping list.
Then, scour deals with ease by virtually “clipping” coupons from your mobile device through tools like the Walgreens mobile app. “With a few clicks of the thumb I was able to order most of the items on my school supplies list within minutes during my lunch break,” says lifestyle blogger Janise Burrafato of “Mama in Heels.” The database has hundreds of offers in searchable categories helping you save time and money during a busy, expensive time of year. What’s more, the app lets you use your mobile device as a point-of-sale device with Apple Pay and Android Pay, allowing you to skip long back-to-school lines and get on with your day. • Get help: Doing it all on your own can be tough, but that’s what families are for. However, this year you can skip the traditional chore wheel. These days, apps can help you incentivize the completion of household duties and assign different tasks on an age-appropriate basis. For more great tips that will have you prepping like a pro this back-to-school season, follow along with “Mama in Heels,” “Katie’s Bliss,” and other lifestyle bloggers using the #MyWalgreensApp hashtag. With the right apps and strategies, everything you need to plan, prep, and navigate the back-to-school season can be found on your mobile device. (StatePoint)

How to Handle Those Problem Areas
ack to School can be a challengebut as soon as everyone’s schedule is back in full swing, take the opportunity to pay a little more attention to a very important person…. You. So, if you have been paying attention to everything except yourself, now may be a great time to take inventory and think about what you really need to feel better and more confident about you. Remember, the way you look, can have a direct impact on the way you feel- and vice-versaso maybe it’s time for a “September resolution” to work on you. No one feels 100 percent confident with their body. If the way your abdomen, thighs and knees look when you wear shorts or that “little black dress” -and if trying on your fall wardrobe brings visions of a muffin top and chubby “problem areas,” don’t worry you’re not alone. It doesn’t matter where the least favorite “spot” of your body is – help is on the way- and there’s a good chance you can deal with these areas and even that double-chin that has been gaining on you- in ways that even the most aggressive diet and exercise has not been able to fix. Yes, the times, they are changing and now you can literally freeze away the fat in many of those problem areas… including the abdomen, thighs, knees….and even that stubborn double-chin. CoolSculpting is the latest FDAcleared technology in fat freezing and body sculpting. The CoolSculpting treatment freezes the fat cells underneath the skin, without damaging any other tissue, organs or the skin itself. Once the fat cells are frozen, they are metabolized and naturally removed from the body. Thus, the fat reduction that occurs is permanent. Typical patients can expect a 20 to 25 percent reduction in their fat with each treatment, and results are seen approximately eight to 10 weeks after the treatment. CoolSculpting is a preferred fat removal procedure compared to many other methods, due to the fact that it is non-invasive, non-surgical and has very little pain and down-time. At Vibrance MedSpa we are proud to
say that we have been offering CoolSculpting for almost three years. Our clients have seen tremendous results and have successfully reduced their abdomens, belly fat, love handles and inner and outer thighs. As of late, per the requests of our valued clients, we are now even offering the latest in CoolSculpting procedures which reduces submental fat on the double chin and the upper knee areas. Whether you are looking for a way to shed those last few stubborn pounds around your mid-section or your chin seems to have morphed into two, don’t wait another day to feel good about yourself again by making a positive change in your appearance and attitude by visiting our highly trained and understanding staff! Call today at 973-328-1700 to schedule a free consultation and freeze assessment to see how CoolSculpting can help freeze your stubborn fat away for good. Visit www.vibrancemedspa.com and www.coolsculpting.com to learn more.

How Students Can Handle The Transition To Middle School
child’s school-aged years are filled with many different lessons and experiences. While in school, kids have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and meet new people. Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools. While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools. That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools. Making the transition from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be. The National Education Association says a common element of a successful middle school experience is a smooth and positive transition from elementary school. The following are a few ways students can handle their transition to middle school. • Participate in a school-based transition program. Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can take tours of the campus. Parents can take part in these events with their children. If your schedule does not allow you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty

member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school. • Dispel any myths your youngster might have heard about middle school. Youngsters hear lots of things about middle schools, and much of what kids hear might be untrue. Ask kids what they have heard about the schools they will be moving on to, and then do your best to dispel any myths. • Find a middle school buddy. Ask an older sibling or invite someone who is currently enrolled in the school to speak with your child and answer any questions he or she may have. Hearing directly from a fellow student may make your child feel more comfortable about what to expect. • Talk about any other fears. Engage in an open dialogue with your son or daughter about any additional fears he or she may have. If students are worried about academics, spend some time over the summer going over the curriculum. If the potential for peer pressure is a cause for concern, reinforce advice on how to react to peer pressure. Parents and their children can take several steps to make students’ transitions to middle school as smooth as possible.

Seven Ways To Make Mornings Less Hectic
any families find the rush is on to make it to school and work on time each morning. Feeling rushed in the morning is a recipe for added stress. Rushing through things is a poor way to begin a day, and those feelings of uneasiness can put a damper on the rest of the day ahead. Making mornings less hectic involves a few different strategies that parents and kids can easily incorporate into their daily routines. • Wake up slightly earlier. Getting up earlier than normal, even if it’s just 15 to 20 minutes before you’re accustomed to getting out of bed, can help reduce morning stress. Resist the temptation to hit the snooze button over and over again. A few extra minutes each morning can make you feel more relaxed and make for a smooth, stress-free start to the day. • Get some work done the night before. Prepare lunches the night before and have them ready in the refrigerator. In addition, lay your clothes for the following day out each night. This saves time and takes a couple more things off your morning to-do list. • Ease back into a routine. As a new school year dawns or a long vacation comes to an end, begin going to bed earlier and start waking up earlier as well. This can make the transition from carefree mornings to busy mornings go more smoothly.
meals they enjoy. Let kids purchase school lunch on those days to give yourself a day off from lunch detail. • Have quick breakfast foods available. Smoothies, cereal bars, oatmeal, and whole-grain cereals are fast and nutritious ways to start the day. • Carpool whenever possible. Busy families can save themselves extra work by proposing a neighborhood carpool. Sharing school dropoff detail frees time up for parents once or twice a week, and kids may enjoy traveling to school with their friends. Mornings can be tricky when family members are getting ready for school and work at the same time. By practicing a few daily rituals, it’s possible to curb the rush and start the day happier and more relaxed.
Make school and work mornings less harried with some easy tips to add to routines.
• Prep backpacks in the evening. Look through folders, sign paperwork, check assignments, and do whatever is you need to do the night before to save your family from having to scramble in the morning. This ensures those permission slips get signed and items make it back into school bags. • Opt for school lunch a few times. Look ahead on the school lunch menu and speak with children about which

Clarification For Pickleball News
n an article that appeared in the August issue of the “Livingston News” titled “Pickleball Spreads Throughout Livingston With More Courts On The Way,” it was mentioned that pickleball lines will be painted at Memorial Park High School tennis courts. This information is incorrect as lines will not be painted on those courts since the high school team plays their games there, according to Michael Garber, pickleball player/organizer.

ollege bound? Dorm room comfort is crucial for health, happiness and academic success. Luckily, there are ways to create personalized, functional spaces within any budget. The college shopping experts at Bed Bath & Beyond are offering tips to help. Create Your Space Students can showcase their style and make it home by adding an area rug, decorative pillows and throw blanket for extra warmth. Window panels, tapestries, artwork and mirrors pull the room together. Add string-lights for atmosphere, or try an Étagère Floor Lamp with Charging Station to provide extra light for studying. Ample seating is always good for when friends pop in: consider chairs that fold when not in use to save space. Standard-issue dorm mattresses are often uncomfortable. Build a better bed with a mattress pad, memory foam topper or fiberbed. Then, guard against allergens and spills with a mattress protector. Most dorms require twin extra-long (TXL) sheets, which are 5” longer than normal twin sheets. Remember, students

will need an extra set for laundry day. College dorm rooms are notorious for being small. Use storage and organizational systems under the bed, over the door and in the closet. For instance, an over-the-door shoe organizer can store rolled up T-shirts, cosmetics, toiletries and school supplies. Take advantage of vertical closet space to make more room with a Double Hang Closet Rod and Slim Grips Hangers. Use Free Resources Some retailers provide a wealth of resources to prepare college-bound shoppers for campus life. For example, Bed Bath & Beyond provides college-specific information, including tailored lists of what students can and can’t bring. This information is available on the School Information Pages, which can be accessed at bedbathandbeyond.com/shopforcollege under “Find Your School’s Info,” or in-store with an associate. Whether living on- or off-campus, the store-provided checklist is handy, breaking down essentials. High school graduates can create a registry online or in-store to share
with family and friends, as well as with roommates in order to avoid duplicates. A free service, “Pack & Hold,” allows students to shop for items at a store near home
for convenient pick-up at a location closer to campus. This is especially beneficial for students traveling far to school. Students can continued on next page

any people worry about giving to charity. They are concerned about where their money is going and how much money is spent on advertising or administrative costs. They want to be sure that their donation is used wisely. Charity Navigator is one of the most reliable sources for evaluating charities and once again, for the sixth year in a row they have given Mor-
ris Habitat for Humanity their highest score. A letter from Ken Berger, Charity Navigator’s president & CEO, announced the honor. Berger noted that, “the nonprofit sector continues to grow at an unprecedented pace; savvy donors are demanding more accountability, transparency and quantifiable results from the charities they choose to support with their hard-earned dollars.”

STEM Taking Schools By Storm
n increased focus on STEM education is one of the most influential initiatives to reach schools in recent years. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The world has become increasingly complex and competitive, and today’s youth need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to evaluate ideas and turn them into productive applications. These are two of the key hallmarks of STEM. According to the National Science Foundation, STEM subjects include chemistry, computer and information technology science, engineering, geosciences, life sciences, mathematical sciences, physics and astronomy, social sciences (anthropology, economics, psychology and sociology), and STEM education and learning research. Recognizing that more and more students are gravitating toward STEM-focused fields and that projected STEM job rates are rising steadily, schools have begun to beef up their offerings with regard to STEM subjects. Jobs in mathematics, computer system analysis, systems software, and biomedical engineering are just some of the careers in which anywhere from a 15 to 62 percent increase between 2010 and 2020 is predicted, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Individuals may believe that STEM study begins in
high school, but the success of older students in STEM subjects is often shaped much earlier on. That’s why parents and educators can do much to cultivate an interest in natural and social sciences as well as in math as early
as possible. Here are a few ideas to do just that. • Encourage participation in the community. Various national clubs and science-based organizations have begun to pay more attention to STEM and offer activities that foster a greater love of science, engineering and math. By joining such clubs and organizations, students can learn more about these subjects and reinforce their enjoyment. • Set up an internship or meet-and-greet. Take students to STEM-centered places of employment so they can get a firsthand experience from within the STEM trenches. Provide opportunities for students to chat with people in the field and ask questions about the type of schooling necessary to pursue a particular degree, and if any hobbies and other activities promote STEM learning. • Investigate school-based opportunities. Schools are broadening course offerings and also establishing STEMbased clubs. Students have the opportunity to get involved with other like-minded classmates. If a club isn’t already available, a teacher or a parent can consider volunteering to serve as the head of the club. STEM is a hot topic of discussion in the world of education. Students can expect to get plenty of exposure to science- and math-related topics both inside and out of the classroom.

Hundreds Of Children Shop Cost-Free At NCJW/Essex Back 2 School Store
alls completely lined with new patterned backpacks, rows of brand new sneakers, and racks and racks of clothing – this was the scene at the National Council of Jewish Women, Essex County Section (NCJW/Essex) Back 2 School Store on Sun., July 31. The Back 2 School Store, in its eighth year, outfitted more than 700 economically disadvantaged children and utilized 470 volunteers. The children were able to shop cost-free for brand new attire, school supplies and personal care items, encouraging a well-equipped and confident start to the new school year. The day began with a ribbon cutting ceremony for dignitaries and supporters of the store. This year’s Back 2 School Store would not have been possible without major support from more than 50 donors including individuals, foundations and corporations. “The Back 2 School Store is one of the most amazing volunteer-led events I’ve ever seen,” commented Barbara Levadi of Livingston, who volunteered as a personal shopper. “It’s a fantastic day; so many children, so many volunteers, so well planned, everyone in good moods and working hard to bring on success for these children.” The store was opened to a long line of excited children, eager to enter the store and pick out brand new outfits which included pants, shirts, winter coats, sneakers, gloves, socks, undergarments and hats. The children, referred by
more than 30 social service agencies, were greeted by their own personal shoppers and then the children and volunteers began their shopping excursions. First stop: a hallway of colorful new backpacks! Then each child received a warm welcome into the 4,000 sq foot space, hosted at B’nai Shalom in West Orange. By the end of the spree, each child had a big bag of clothing in tow and a backpack filled with personal care items and school supplies. “I just saw a little girl spin around and look in the mirror with a huge smile after trying on her new clothes,” said NCJW/Essex member Brooke Lefferts of Maplewood, who has volunteered at the Back 2 School Store since its inception. “We made her day and she is going to wear her newly picked out outfit on the first day of school. Every year I am amazed by the organization and the heart from NCJW/Essex and all the volunteers." While the children “shopped” inside the store, parents and caregivers browsed the Gaelen Family Resource Center to pick up health and social service information from many different exhibitors. With shoes that fit just right and smiles from ear to ear, the children exited the store and were reunited with their parents and guardians. “This has been the best day of my entire life,” exclaimed one child as he departed the store.
A young shopper shows off her new backpack that she selected at the NCJW/Essex Back 2 School Store.

Legendary Birthplace Of American Cinema Features Workshop For Future Cinematic Artists
by Michele Guttenberger n Sun., July 17, the Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange partnered with MONO NO AWARE, a nonprofit cinematic arts creative group to offer a one day film workshop at the exact site and replica of the legendary Black Maria studio. The program was promoted as a school age workshop. Participants were given special reservations to shoot film inside the Black Maria using the film format that was originally used more than 100 years ago. Family participants came as far as Brooklyn New York to learn about old film production methods and starred in their own skit complete with props and attire accessories. The skits were shot using 16mm film. This is a format Edison’s movie cameras used to capture short sequences as black and white images on reversal film stock. MONO NO AWARE staff was the camera crew and film processors. At 4 p.m. all workshop movie participants got to see

their film projected on the movie screen at the visitor’s film viewing area and also received a digital video copy of their work. This was the third year of this popular July summer film workshop. The park staff looks forward to repeating this family program again next July with MONO NO AWARE. Plan ahead for it in next year’s summer calendar: note Sunday mid-July 2017 as a summer cinematic workshop date. Be aware this workshop has limited enrollment slots and fills up quickly. Edison and his staff produced hundreds of filmstrips from their Black Maria studio, with many genres and titles ranging from the romantic Kiss to a Cockfight and sports Wrestling, that were made to be viewed in Kinetoscope parlors across the country in the 1880’s. The first movie theater projection was in 1896. The Edison Company showed a collection of moving images as a minor act in a vaudeville show at Koster and Bial’s Music Hall in New York City. This event inaugurated the era of commer-
cial movies which has now lasted into the 21st Century. During the month of August come see these same landmark films. Edison studio produced films will be shown every Friday at 2:30 p.m. in historical building 11 which
is free with an entrance admission. For more special family programs at Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange go to www.nps.gov/edis or contact visitor information at 973-736-0550 x11.

Tips To Beat Wardrobe Wars When Back-to-School Shopping For Kids
t’s no secret that kids have strong opinions when it comes to style and that their tastes are always evolving. With 38 percent of parents spending between $100 to $249 per child on back-to-school clothing, according to statistics from online retailer Zulily, parents and kids alike should feel confident in their purchases. “It’s never a good feeling to buy your child new clothes, only to find a favorite color, pattern or style has changed,” says Shawn Redman, senior buyer and kids’ fashion expert for zulily.com. “This back-toschool season, our ‘Kids’ Trend Report’ uncovered that now, more than ever, it’s important to involve kids in the shopping process to lessen potential power struggles and inspire smiles on the first day of school.” Redman recommends planning ahead to avoid stress. Start by cleaning out your kids’ closets so

you can see what still fits and create an accurate checklist of needed items. Then, look for the best deals to help you stay within budget. Online retailers like zulily.com can be a go-to destination to discover great deals on back-to-school shopping, including a variety of shoes, apparel, accessories and school supplies. Daily, the site features a new assortment of unique looks at great prices. To help parents shop for kids, zulily is offering key survey findings from kids ages five to 12, in its inaugural “Kids’ Trend Report.” • Girls go against gender norms while embracing the combination of comfort and style, with their top look being athletic (40 percent), followed by boho (33 percent). Boys, however, are looking to a more adult-influenced approach for fashion inspiration, preferring city chic (48 percent) and preppy (33 percent) for their back-to-

Boys still prefer blue (42 percent), with red (15 percent) and black (12 percent) coming in as second and third choices. • Sorry Mom, girls say you are not their number one style icon. While many moms use their own style as the main source of inspiration when shopping for their kids (38 percent), girls are more likely to turn to friends (41 percent) first for inspiration, then to Mom (26 percent), followed closely by television (22 percent). Boys continue to go with the flow and frequently turn to parents for style inspiration first (38 percent), followed closely by friends (34 percent), with television being the smallest source of their style inspiration (14 percent).

MPAC Wins 2016 Outstanding Historic Theatre Award
ayo Performing Arts Center has been named 2016 Outstanding Historic Theatre by The League of Historic American Theatres (LHAT). President and CEO Allison Larena and General Manager Ed Kirchdoerffer accepted the award at LHAT’s annual conference on Sun., July 17 in Chicago. The conference is the largest gathering of historic theatre professionals in North America. “It is an honor to be recognized by a distinguished group of peers who work to make historic theatres vital economic engines, community gathering places, and arts and educational centers in the towns we serve,” Larena said. LHAT’s Awards Program inspires excellence by recognizing theatres and individuals for their significant accomplishments or distinguished service. The Outstanding Historic Theatre Award recognizes a theatre that demonstrates excellence through its community impact, quality of programs and services, and quality of the restoration or rehabilitation of its historic structure. An award-winning theatre will have demonstrated excellence through significant achievement, the impact of its services and breadth of populations served, and the length of time and/or intensity of its activities. Each year, one theatre and one individual are honored by LHAT at its annual conference. Former winners include the Fabulous Fox in
Atlanta, New York City Center and Playhouse Square in Cleveland. “Mayo Performing Arts Center beat out an impressive list of nominees to claim this award this year,” said LHAT President and CEO Ken Stein. “There are a great number of historic theatres doing great work across the country. The community of Morristown should be very proud of MPAC’s accomplishments.” Larena added, “We share this honor with the thousands of community members who worked tirelessly, and continue to work tirelessly, to build, support and improve this venue that has brought so much joy to countless individuals for the past 80 years. We know that our work today will continue to inspire future generations to sustain MPAC as a vital performing arts center and the cultural center of our community.” MPAC, built in 1937 as The Community Theatre by Walter Reade, is recognized for its impact and leadership in the New Jersey arts community in scope and diversity of programming, community outreach and arts education. The rich history of Morristown revolves around community organizations, in which the Theatre has been central as a longstanding community gathering place since it first opened its doors. MPAC presents more than 200 events annually, with more than 200,000 patrons, free concerts and
events and educational programs. Founded in 1976, the League of Historic American Theatres (LHAT) is a non-profit organization with the main purpose of sustaining historic theatres across North America for the benefit of their communities and future generations.

Fred And Ethel Looking For Home
Active Dog Likes Hiking
eet Bandit from Eleventh Hour Rescue. Bandit is a playful Pointer/ Labrador Retriever mix who is about four years old. He has impeccable manners both inside and outside and will steal anyone’s heart with one glance. He is an active dog who likes to walk and sniff, and one of his favorite activities is hiking. He is strong on a leash but walks well with a harness. Bandit is a smart and affectionate dog who at one time lived with three small children and loved them very much. However, he can be selective with other dogs, so he should be the only dog in the home. Bandit also loves to ride in the car, is house-trained and never barks.

ay hello to Fred and Ethel! This brother and sister duo is a bonded pair of kittens available to be adopted together through the Pet Adoption League. Fred is a sweet, shy fellow with some special needs. He has a neurological condition known as Mild Cerebellar Hypoplasia, which means he tends to be a bit more clumsy than other kittens and will sometimes fall over and have some head tremors, especially when he is playing hard with his sister. Ethel is Fred's own physical therapist and support system. She makes sure to keep him super active and helps him try out new things. They love to play with each other, enjoy ear scratches and cuddle up for naps and bedtime. They are up to date with shots and are about four months old. Contact www.palpets.org, call 973-584-0095 or email at info@palpets.org.
Cute Fox Terrier Mix Behaves, Loves Walks
eet Nancy from Eleventh Hour Rescue. Nancy is a Wirehaired Fox Terrier mix who is about four years old and weighs 25 pounds. This cute, scruffy little girl with great big ears has a thirst for adventure! She behaves great on a leash and loves going for walks and exploring outdoors. Nancy takes treats gently and knows some basic commands, but she has a strong personality and would do best with an experienced owner. She likes to ride in the car, is house-trained, and is non-reactive to other dogs. Nancy does not like cats and would do best in a home with adults only or older children. To read
