illions of women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. According to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, more than 2.3 million women across the globe were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. The BCRF also notes that breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in 140 of 184 countries worldwide. Breast cancer statistics can give the impression that each of the millions of women diagnosed with the disease is fighting the same battle, but breast cancer is something of an umbrella term. In fact, there are various types of breast cancer, including ductal carcinoma in situ, invasive ductal carcinoma, inflammatory breast cancer, and metastatic breast cancer. Learning about each type of breast cancer can help women and their families gain a greater understanding of this disease. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) DCIS is a non-invasive cancer that is diagnosed when abnormal cells have
been found in the lining of the breast milk duct. The National Breast Cancer Foundation notes that DCIS is a highly treatable cancer. That’s because it hasn’t spread beyond the milk duct into any surrounding breast tissue. The American Cancer Society notes that roughly 20 percent of new breast cancer cases are instances of DCIS. Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) IDC is the most common type of breast cancer. The NBCF reports that between 70 and 80 percent of all breast cancer diagnoses are instances of IDC. An IDC diagnosis means that cancer began growing in the milk ducts but has since spread into other parts of the breast tissue. This is why IDC is characterized as “invasive.” Though IDC can affect people, including men, of any age, the ACS notes that the majority of IDC cases are in women age 55 and older. Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) The NBCF describes IBC as an “aggressive and fast growing breast cancer.” Breastcancer.org notes that
Women diagnosed with breast cancer may each face a different battle, as there are many different types of the disease.
IBC is rare, as data from the ACS indicates that only about 1 percent of all breast cancers in the United States are inflammatory breast cancers. Many breast cancers begin with the formation of a lump, but Breastcancer.org reports that IBC usually begins with reddening and swelling of the breast, and symptoms can worsen considerably within days or even hours. That underscores the importance of seeking prompt treatment should any symptoms present themselves. Metastatic breast cancer Metastatic breast cancer may be referred to as stage IV breast cancer. When a woman is diagnosed with
metastatic breast cancer, that means the cancer has spread, or metastasized, into other parts of the body. The NBCF indicates that metastatic breast cancer usually spreads to the lungs, liver, bones, or brain. Symptoms of metastatic breast cancer vary depending on where the cancer has spread. For example, if the cancer has spread to the lungs, women may experience a chronic cough or be unable to get a full breath. These are not the only types of breast cancer. A more extensive breakdown of the various types of breast cancer can be found at https://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/types.

Caldwell’s Arthur Nelson Turns 100
A
By: Grace Maguire rthur Nelson, a man of many stories and wise affirmations, was born on October 5th, 1921, and this year he celebrated his 100th birthday. To say the least, Nelson is thankful to God and his upbringing for getting him to triple digits. While getting to one hundred certainly wasn’t planned, he has spent all his years creating memories and making the most out of the life he was given. His earlier years were taken up by the Marine Corps. He joined just after the events of Pearl Harbor and was proud to board his battleship and serve his country. Being a World War Two Marine Corps veteran is one of the reasons Nelson believes he has gotten to where he is today. He speaks about the discipline that he learned and how that taught him how to maintain himself and his well-being, “It taught me to discipline myself in things I do.” From being a veteran and his own life experiences, Nelson can also rave about how having a routine has changed his life for the better. He wakes up and goes to bed at the same time every day. Nelson also enjoys his egg beaters, potatoes, and English muffins for breakfast and his cottage cheese and fruit for lunch. For dinner, though, he absolutely adores being able to go out to dinner with anyone who will join him. “You need routine,” Nelson preaches, even in changing times, a routine is something everyone should try to keep. Nelson could most likely be classified as the most traveled man in New Jersey with a never-ending list of countries he and his wife, Helen, have traveled to. While he had worked over forty years as a wholesale distributor for a baking company and Helen worked as a second-grade teacher for fifty years,
they made sure to keep well-traveled and adventurous. One of Nelson’s favorite trips, which led to so many more, was to Australia. “The people are so much like Americans… They are fun-loving!” On top of those, the two of them have also been to England, Germany, the Caribbean Islands, Argentina, Scotland, and so many more that this list could go on and on. If the Nelsons wanted to travel somewhere, it was more likely than not that the plans would be made. Nelson thought about what his favorite decade of life was and answered, “Golf season, once I retired, I played a lot of golf.” As if traveling the world before wasn’t enough, becoming a skilled golfer brought Nelson to even more places around the world to play in tournaments. He played golf from 65 years old all the way to 90 years old. Nelson won one tournament during that time and was also able to play against and befriend famous golfer Arnold Palmer along with many other well-known golfers of that age. One hundred years is a lot of time to watch pass by, and Nelson got to see it all first hand. He talks about how The Great Depression was some of the most challenging years he had as a child, how being a war veteran also comes with many stories, good and bad, and how calculators and cell phones are amazing pieces of technology. He owns a flip phone himself and can’t seem to wrap his mind around how great the device is and how confusing it can be at the same time. As Nelson’s birthday approached, he had the chance to sit back and be proud of all that he had done in his life. While he may have wanted a dog, a horse, and a simple house in the middle of nowhere, he couldn’t be any happier with how
he has spent the last one hundred years. Nelson likes to say, “Lord was with me,” and how a part of making it this far was both physical and mental on his part. If he can pass down anything to the younger generations as advice from his own life, it would be, “It’s there if you want it, earn it.” On October 5th, Nelson enjoyed his birthday with his related family and his church family, celebrating his life and cracking funny jokes that roll off the tip of his tongue just as easily as they did years ago.

Evan Stuart Marshall’s Award-Winning Paintings Aglow in Happiness
H
By Jillian Risberg is abstract original works have been dubbed ‘happy art,’ and that makes international award-winning painter Evan Stuart Marshall happy because it’s the emotion he’s trying to evoke. “I want my collectors to feel good, get a lift whenever they walk past one of my paintings,” Marshall says about the vivid vibe they bring to any room. He works on several pieces at once. Currently the artist is developing a series of paintings using classic compositions such as the cruciform and the ‘Z,’ assemblage pieces—found objects combined to create ‘2-D collages’ and altered books, using an old book as the basis for an art piece. He can’t live without his texture tools. “My pieces are highly textured and I am constantly experimenting with various materials to achieve new and different textures in my work,” says Marshall. “Recently I’ve been using shelf liner (rubbery, waffle-patterned stuff), coffee sleeves, bubble wrap, styrofoam, sponges, knives, razorblades, netting, paper doilies— you name it,” he adds. “Anything to get the effects I’m after. I scrape, blot, stencil, scratch and use my fingers a lot.” Marshall’s latest experiment is pressing styrofoam plates into wet paint, letting lo paint half-dry, then tearing the plate away
for a ‘grunge’ effect, according to the painter. He is inspired by art he loves. “If I see a design, texture, shape or color combination that appeals to me, I make a mental note, go back to my studio and see what kind of twist I can give it,” says Marshall. “In other words, I use a tiny piece I loved in the art but build my piece around it, making it mine.” He leaves full of ideas he wants to experiment with whenever he goes to an art museum or gallery. The artist feels enormous satisfaction knowing one of his (uniquely colored) pieces brings people joy. “I am extremely grateful for the support of the people who collect my work and the galleries that show it,” the painter says. “It’s a dream come true to be able to do what you love and have other people connect with it.” He chooses colors ‘that make my eyes happy’ when he paints — it’s the only way I can describe it, he adds. “I don’t stop working on a painting until the overall piece excites me the way I hope it will excite the viewer.” Some of the painter’s recent favorites include: Diffusion, 2021, acrylic on canvas, 20” x 20”; Moulin Rouge, 2021; mixed media on panel, 20” x 20”; Flying Free, 2020, mixed media on panel, 20” x 20” and Circuit, 2021, mixed media on panel, 20” x 20”.
According to Marshall, the most exciting thing about creating a painting is setting something down on that blank surface and seeing where it takes him. He paints intuitively and iteratively, making a mark or shape, considering what he’s got, making another mark or shape, and so on. “I never know what I’ll end up with,” the painter says. “I continue this process until the painting excites me, and I always know the exact moment to stop”. Like many artists, Marshall has always been interested in creating art. In junior high school he famously created ‘psychedelic’ posters (it was 1969, he says) for his friends at a dollar each. He took art lessons on and off throughout childhood, and his favorite subject in school was understandably art class. “I undertook my art career in earnest about 25 years ago,” Marshall says. “I began with landscapes and still lifes, felt something was missing — tried my hand at abstract art (and) I was hooked!” His best advice to upcoming artists is to forget about giving people what you think they want. Instead, create art that is truly you. “What you would buy for your own home,” says the painter. “If you build on what makes your work unique and make it the

very best it can be, you will find an audience. It wasn’t until I stopped trying to copy other artists’ styles and focused on developing my own that I began experiencing success. Let your style come out and run with it.” He teaches mixed-media abstracts for the Livingston Arts Association and continues creating pieces for examples to show his students. And Marshall started his new after-school mixed-media class for teens on September 21. For more information on Evan Marshall, visit www.evanstuartmarshall.com.

Caldwell Woman’s New Fitness Magazine Powerful for Special Needs
E
By Jillian Risberg veryone has the potential to look after themselves, live well and feel good… those with special needs and disabilities are no different. For that very reason, Yomi Karade founded Special Needs Fitness Magazine (launching October 2021) to offer a physical and online space celebrating the very adults and children she trains and works with. “Unfortunately, in the past this community has been looked down (on) and shunned by society,” says Karade, an ACE Certified personal trainer and wellness coach. “We
don’t do crumbs, we do great. I see all my clients as powerful people. They teach me so much. People need to know that even they hold the key to many blessings.” A publication dedicated to fitness and health for the special needs community has not been done… on this scale, according to the wellness coach. She takes a holistic approach and had much motivation to start the magazine. “My son (Kofi) who has autism, albinism and other needs, my fitness background, working with children and adults with and without special needs and

disabilities since I was 13, and currently through my program, Inclusive Fitness Programs,” says Karade, who trains clients at Embracing Fitness in Little Falls (also inhome and over Zoom). IfP provides a wealth of benefits, she adds, including: muscular strength, core and postural health movement; balance and stability; agility and flexibility; behavior management, motor planning and information processing skills; confidence, independence and social interactions;
healthy eating and meal planning; relaxation and mindfulness living. The magazine will have a host of story contributors, from personal trainers, to doctors, various healthcare professionals, teachers and others from around the world. Karade dove right in, having set up three publications prior to this one: The Ancestral Call (2000), UK Today Newspaper (2005), for British people in America, and Shop on the Avenue (2008), a publication for stores on continued on page 7

New Fitness Magazine... continued from page 6 Bloomfield Avenue. It all began for her in her native England, as a recruitment advertising and event sales executive — then she was promoted to manager for a telecommunications magazine, Communication News. Before long she had accrued 27 years of media experience that she instills into this new venture. Special Needs Fitness Magazine is preparing for a great world movement. The magazine, Karade says, is going to be such an inspiration. “Right now 30 hours in a day would be better than 24, trying to get all the amazing stories from the community in the first edition, during the pandemic and now endemic.” People are aware that special needs and those with a disability are among us, according to the personal trainer and wellness coach.
“Problem is they are given minimal or no opportunities because people often set the bar so low for them, many can only see an IN-ability, not an ability,” says Karade. “This concept is just discrimination and unfair.” The wellness coach views it from a different perspective. “I’m like ‘no, they can do EVERYTHING… just watch,’” she says of her programs. It’s all those stories that keep Karade going and excited for what’s to come. “Many of my clients have built up great confidence in their lives and gone to college, learned how to drive, got the jobs they wanted, on the path to set up their own business, graduated with master’s degrees, and have just felt better in their own skin,” she says. Frank Rodgers Steps Down After 24 Seasons as Head Coach of Hackettstown High School Wrestling
A
By Steve Sears fter 265 career wins as head coach of the Hackettstown High School Tigers wrestling team, Frank Rodgers is passing the reigns to his assistant coach, Jim Berringer. Fear not, though; he’ll still roam the school’s hallways and Morrison Field as he continues to teach calculus and serve as an assistant coach for the football and track & field squads. “There was a couple of reasons,” he says when asked about his stepping down as wrestling coach. “The new head coach, he started with me in 2013, and he was more than ready to become the head coach. I did it long enough, and he deserves the opportunity to have a shot at it like I did so many years ago.” Rodgers, who first was a 6-year assistant coach for the wrestling team and then head coach for 24 seasons, has been coaching three sports for the last 21 years. “I had a run there for a while,” Rodgers says, “and you know what, the winter season is the longest season - maybe not calendar wise, but it is mentally. I just would like to have the holidays, be with my family, and kind of relax a little bit. With wrestling, it’s six days a week, and a lot of Saturdays are pretty much spent in the gym all day. That’s part of it as
well.” Rodgers, who considers himself a teacher first and a coach second, is fond of all of his teams, but he speaks of two that were extra special. “In 2006 and in 2007, we were back-to-back district champions, and we were back-to-back North Jersey II Group II Sectional champions. In 2007, we had a final ranking of number 6 in the state of New Jersey. We were 21 – 2 that season.” He also recalls a trip to one of the state’s toughest wrestling spots, “The Pit” in Phillipsburg. “Those kids on that day - and they were all sophomores and juniors; I really didn’t have a lot of seniors on the team - they just took control the whole tournament,” he proudly recalls. “They won the districts in ‘The Pit’ at PBurg, and it was like the first time in like 18 years somebody else besides PBurg won the district.” Rodgers is married to his wife, Maria, and the couple has five children: Frank, Nicholas, Tommy, Dante, and Monica. Residents of Caldwell, all four Rodgers boys wrestled for the Caldwell Chiefs, occasional opponents of the Hackettstown Tigers. Rodgers therefore faced the tough task of coaching against his own sons. “The older two, Frank and Nick, I coached against multiple times. Thomas was number three when it got to him. I was coaching our kid a couple of times

against him, and probably the last time I just couldn’t do it anymore. I told my assistant, ‘Jim, you’ve got to do this. I’ve just got to watch my kid,’ he says with a laugh. Rodgers, who got his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Rutgers University and masters at Montclair State, grew up in North Caldwell and is a 1978 graduate of West Essex High School. Both a member of the Knights football team as well as a regional champion wrestler, Rodgers is enshrined in that school’s Hall of Fame, and he was also honored likewise by Hackettstown High School in 2019. “Frank Rodgers epitomizes what a high school coach ought to be,” says

current Athletic Director, Bob Grauso. “His tremendous career accomplishments, including 8 team wrestling championships include two state titles, and his 10-time Coach of the Year awards speak for themselves. But it is the positive influence on, not only hundreds and hundreds of his wrestlers, but even more students who pass through his classroom doors each day, that sets Coach Rodgers apart from others.” As an extra special honor, on January 29, 2022, prior to the 6 p.m. wrestling match between Hackettstown and Caldwell, there will be a dedication ceremony to name the Hackettstown High School wrestling room after Rodgers.

B
Keep the Focus on Fun During Family Baking Sessions
aking is a beloved tradition in many families. Though family baking sessions tend to be especially popular during the holiday season, there’s nothing stopping families from breaking out the flour and having some fun in the kitchen at any time of year. Fun is the focus when families bake together, and the following are some ways to make such sessions enjoyable for everyone. • Encourage input. The designated family baker may have a host of go-to recipes up his or her sleeve, and baking such specialties might be a necessity on birthdays or during the holiday season. But all baking sessions need not be beholden to family favorites. Encourage all family members to recommend recipes prior to family baking sessions, even allowing a different person to choose the recipe each time. This can make the whole family enthusiastic about baking together and may even help families discover some new foods. • Remember that patience is a virtue. Family baking sessions require patience, especially when young children are involved. Kids’ attention spans may wane or they may grow upset if they spill some
ingredients. Remain patient at such times and let kids know making a mess is part of the fun of baking together. • Simplify sessions as necessary. Baking with toddlers and school-aged youngsters is going to be different than doing so alongside preteens and adolescents. In addition, consider kids’ maturity levels when planning family baking sessions, as some youngsters might be more than capable of following more challenging recipes. Making sure kids are given age-appropriate tasks or jobs on par with their maturity levels is a great way to keep sessions fun and prevent frustration. • Share the baking bounty. Let everyone indulge a little during the baking session. If you plan on making cookies, don’t hesitate to let everyone snack on a few chocolate chips while preparing the cookies. And once the bounty is done baking and it’s ready to eat, share it with family, friends and neighbors. Kids will be proud of their creations and want to share them, and that will ensure they’re excited about the next family baking session. When baking with the family, keep the focus on fun so everyone has a great time while baking some tasty treats.

The Road to Recovery Continues After Cancer Treatment Ends
T
he American Cancer Society reports that the five-year survival rate for all cancers combined that were diagnosed between 2009 and 2015 was 67 percent. That’s a noteworthy and encouraging statistic, though global figures compiled by Ourworldindata.org indicate that five-year survival rates following diagnosis are significantly lower in poorer countries. In addition, the road to recovery for cancer patients typically does not end when treatments are completed. The National Cancer Institute notes that many cancer survivors have indicated that information and support was abundant during their treatment. However, once treatment stopped, a new wave of questions and uncertainty soon emerged. For example, the NCI points out that many cancer survivors recognize that life after treatment is less about “getting back to normal” than it is about discovering the new normal. In fact, the Memorial Sloan Ketting Cancer Center reports that most people indicate it takes between six and 12 months after they complete chemotherapy before they truly feel like themselves again. Follow-up care also is a vital part of recovering from cancer. The NCI notes that

cancer survivors typically return to the doctor every three to four months during the first two to three years after treatment. After that, survivors may see their doctors once or twice a year. Follow-up care is vital for cancer survivors, as it provides their doctors an opportunity to determine if patients are experiencing any side effects from treatment. These appointments also allow doctors to determine if the cancer has returned or spread to other parts of the body. In addition, follow-up visits provide an opportunity for cancer survivors to bring up any symptoms or questions they might have. Patients can ask about ways to reduce their risk of cancer recurrence and seek advice on getting back to normal, including how quickly they can begin exercising and how to approach new fitness regimens if they were inactive prior to diagnosis. The road to recovery from cancer may be filled with uncertainty. But cancer survivors should recognize that millions before them have survived the disease and gone on to live full, happy lives. A patient approach to recovery can help cancer survivors overcome any obstacles they may encounter along the way.

Empty Cloud Monastery: A Community Within A Community
by Elsie Walker ommunity” is a word which comes to mind when talking about the Empty Cloud Monastery on Ridgeway Avenue in West Orange. A Buddhist monastery, in addition to sharing the Buddhist teachings, Empty Cloud offers ways for anyone of any faith (or agnostic or atheist) to grow through meditation. Its retreats and activities are offered free to the public. Also, it has reached out to the community with a food distribution program during the Covid pandemic. That spirit of generosity has been reflected back to the monastery through those in the local and wider community who help sustain the monastery and its monks. Recently, two of the monks, Ayya Soma and Bhante Suddhaso talked about Buddhism and the offerings at the monastery. Soma and Suddhaso started the nonprofit organization, Buddhist Insights, in January 2016. Its mission is to connect people with Buddhist monastics. The organization was located in New York City and moved to West Orange in January 2020. The Buddhist monastery is located in what was formerly a Catholic monastery named for the area in which it is located: St. Cloud’s. In naming their monastery, the
Buddhist monks wanted to keep the location part of the name. When asked why their monastery was named Empty Cloud, the monks noted several things that go with the “empty” part of the name. Suddhaso noted that in coming there, one’s goal is to empty their mind of hatred, greed, and delusion. Soma noted the idea of being empty of independence, that everyone is dependent on someone else. She shared how that was seen during the pandemic, with who was labeled as “essential workers” opening people’s eyes as to how much people needed each other. Finally, Empty Cloud is the name of a famous Asian monk. The monks shared some basics of Buddhism. Buddhism is a set of practices for achieving unconditional happiness through generosity, kindness, and meditation. For example, through meditation, people can change their mindset as to how they see themselves and the world around them. Negative thoughts could be replaced with more positive, loving ones. Change starts from the inside and becomes an outwardly one. Through meditation people can help themselves change how they see others. Suddhaso mentioned that meditation can also help people to love themselves, and have compassion for themselves and
“
others. “One doesn’t need to be a Buddhist to practice Buddhism,” Soma noted. She mentioned that Buddhism can help people of other faiths (Christian, Muslim, Jew), atheists, or agnostics to grow. Soma noted that it is said that God helps those who help themselves. Buddhism is a way to help oneself. The monastery offers a variety of retreats, activities and educational offerings to the public at no cost, plus has offered food assistance during the pandemic. Retreats allow people to deepen their meditation practice in an intensive and supportive environment, and people can stay at
the monastery for a few days or weeks. Educational offerings are live streamed on Facebook and available on YouTube. Through those, the monks reach not only those in the area who are interested in learning more about Buddhism, but also reach people in areas of the world who want to study Buddhism but don’t have a monastery near them for instruction. The monastery offers family days where families can bring food to share and spend a day. During this time of COVID, it is best to check the following site to see the offerings available: www.buddhistinsights.org/ events. In addition to their programs, Soma continued on page 13

Empty Cloud Monastery... continued from page 12 noted that they started a food distribution program in April 2020 to help families in need experiencing food insecurity due to COVID19. The spirit of community flows both ways. The monks have taken a vow of poverty and so rely on donations to sustain them. In these days of what seems to be bad news everywhere, Soma mentioned how heart-
warming it is to see that there are so many generous people in the world who help them. They go weekly to the West Orange Farmers Market where people give them donations of food and other donations are given at the monastery or made online. Adversity Inspires Caldwell Musician and Singer As He Preps Latest Album closed, venues were closed - there’s just a lot of material over a six-year span, which is not a bad thing. It’s actually, the way I look at it, a very positive thing.” His forthcoming album, April Showers, initially targeted for a summer 2021 release, will instead be unveiled in the spring of 2022. Kelly, who began playing the guitar at age five and performing for audiences when he was 15, was inspired by his dad.
L
By Steve Sears ife-long Caldwell area resident, Mychal Kelly, will tell you that you can’t keep a good man down. In fact, he’s living proof. Since 2012, the 38-year-old Kelly has faced much adversity, but instead of permitting it to quell his creative fire, he used it to sow seeds for harvest. Consider his current work in progress. “My last album was released in 2014, and I began working on that (his 7th album) right afterwards,” he explains. “I had the loss of my father back in 2016, and him being a musician as well, I devoted that whole year to finishing some of his uncompleted works. It diverted from there; living through that experience also inspired a whole new group of songs that I didn’t want to eliminate from the whole process.” After that, he went through a separation and divorce. “Any kind of huge life event is going to inspire I think any artist. Because they were so close together, I just kept on focusing on the creative side of everything.” Finally, Covid-19 happened, completing a between-the-eyes trifecta.
“He was an all around musician,” says Kelly. “He was self taught - drums, bass, piano, guitar – and I was self taught just being surrounded by it all the time. There was never a moment that I didn’t have music while growing up in my house.” After high school, Kelly and his band switched from performing Top 40 tunes, something they were unaccustomed to but was recommended to them. “We kind continued on page 15

continued from page 14 of felt like we had more of a vehicle doing things on our own,” he says. At that time, they also started an independent label called 648 Productions. “And I was always really inspired by the theatrical side of music, so we wanted to do something that was not really the top 40, which was the mainstream at the time, and be more of a concept group.” What followed was a solo career and a “The Jersey Devil” series of albums and music movie production which kept Kelly busy until 2012, when adversity struck again. While working on an album called The Acoustic Project, Kelly was involved in a bad traffic accident where he broke both his femur and hip. Bedridden for over half a year, he pondered both the then-current project and his future. It afforded him time to sow seed once more. “What I was pretty much doing to get through it was just playing the guitar and writing additional material, and I kind of revisited some of my roots.” The album was eventually named T.A.P. – Part 1: The Astral Plane, and was released in September of 2014. It was different. “It became a matter of just keeping it very
raw,” says Kelly. “Just two variables: just two guitar tracks, and two vocal tracks throughout the whole piece. Nothing was multitrack and there was no real studio magic or extra seasoning on it. It was just very raw songwriting and talent.” It was also a work of heart and soul. “Absolutely,” he readily exclaims. “I had just gotten married, and I had my daughter who was only about a year old, and my stepson was about four. So, it really coincided with that of becoming a father, and just the maturity level as well.” And the title for Kelly’s forthcoming album is certainly appropriate. “The title, it’s just like the old saying ‘April showers bring May flowers.’ The inspiration for every song will be inspired by the rainy days, some great and some not so great, but the end result will be the album itself, the flower that blooms from the past 7 years experiences.” The offering will be a mix of classic rock, acoustic, and modern pop. Mychal Kelly’s music is available on Amazon, Apple, Spotify, and various other music sources. For more information, visit www.mychalkelly.com.

Beware of Skimmers and Shimmers
P
ersonal safety refers to physical and mental well-being, but individuals also must take steps to safeguard their financial well-being. Thieves have various ways to steal individuals’ personal data — everything from hacking into banking or shopping accounts to stealing physical mail. But thieves also have more sophisticated, often hidden ways to steal private financial data. Consumer Reports says the public should be aware of skimmers and shimmers, which are sophisticated devices that steal data when people use public credit and debit card readers at ATMs, gas pumps and other locations. A card skimmer is placed on top of the point-of-sale terminal. When a person swipes his or her credit or debit card, the device collects data from it. That data can be used to make fraudulent purchases and to produce counterfeit cards. Among the newest tools scammers use are shimmers, which are tiny types of skimmers that are capable of reading data from new chipbased cards, according to the ATM Industry Association, a nonprofit trade organization. Criminals can even retrofit hidden cameras at ATMs and other locations with card skimmers. Skimmers and shimmers are often Bluetooth-based circuit boards that

can transmit stolen card data wirelessly. A thief can drive by a terminal to download card data remotely from a mobile device or laptop. Devices are getting harder and harder to spot and are turning up in some unlikely places. According to Matt Hayes, a special agent for the United States Secret Service, “You’re never going to know the skimmer is installed on the point-of-sale terminal [of a store].” Recent surveillance video from inside an Aldi grocery store in Pennsylvania showed someone installing a skimming device right in front of a clerk who was unaware of what was happening. The ATM Industry Association says about half of the skimmers currently in use are relatively invisible. The credit scoring company FICO indicates the latest data showed there was a 70 percent increase in the number of debit cards that were compromised in 2016 at ATMs and other card readers used by merchants, and the numbers continue to grow. Monitoring credit card and banking statements as well as credit reports is the best way to keep on top of scams. Quickly report any unauthorized withdrawals, payments or purchases; otherwise, you may be responsible for charges and face longterm financial repercussions.

The Importance of Sea Turtle Recovery Resonates in West Orange and Across NJ
D
By Steve Sears uckiee was gone, so thought Brandi Biehl and Bill Deerr, Co-Executive Officers of Sea Turtle Recovery at the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange. “It’s just one of the most significant (recovery stories),” Deerr says, “because we really thought he wasn’t coming back. We were about to just give up on him, and then we’re like, ‘We’ll just keep going. We have a heart rate; his heart’s still doing okay. We’ll keep going another 10 minutes.’” The duo had been doing CPR for 30 minutes while being guided on the phone by a veterinarian, and had also given medication that stimulated Duckiee’s heart and breathing. “We just thought there was no chance,” Deere recalls with a smile. “And he just - all of a sudden literally opened his eyes and took a breath.” “Duckiee got his name because, that first day, he just floated on the top of the tank, kicked his rear flippers like a duck,” says Biehl. A heartwarming success story from this duo who, you can tell, love animals, especially the water type. Both have Bachelor’s degrees in Marine Science (she from Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina, he from Richard J. Stockton University in Atlantic County), and yes, the education means so much. But it’s the love of sea turtles that encouraged them to start in 2014 first as a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization with education and outreach, and then when Turtle Back Zoo in 2016 stepped in as a partner and offered a 4,000 square foot building for complete sea turtle care, say yes to a great opportunity. Recovery is dedicated to the rehabilitation, preservation, and conservation of sea turtles. Biehl and Deerr met at Brigantine, New Jersey’s Marine Mammal Stranding Center. “We could respond to sea turtles and to pick them up for short term holdings,” Deerr says, “but we didn’t have the permits or the properties to do the long-term care. We always had to transfer turtles to a designated sea turtle hospital, or a place that had
turtle tanks. And so many times we would drive through the night transporting turtles down to usually North Carolina, and turn around and come back. We’d have a turtle in critical shape, and the stress and transport were too much and they didn’t survive it. So, we wanted to do more for these endangered species here in the state; we knew we had to do something else to help them.” He then continued on page 18

Importance of Sea Turtle Recovery... continued from page 17 adds most importantly, “We’re the only facility for all of New Jersey. And then if we have space and other facilities need help, we will now take from them as well. Since we’ve opened, we’ve taken turtles from Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Virginia, but our primary focus is New Jersey.” When it comes to onsite at Sea Turtle Rescue and monitoring the facility’s ICU unit and its four separate recovery pools, Biehl and Deerr are a two-person team. “We’re the secretaries, we’re the grant writers,” Biehl says with a laugh. “We are it.” And when things get overwhelming, both will go visit a sea turtle that is rehabbing in one of the facility’s four pools. “It’s the calm they bring over you, and you’re like, ‘This is why I’m here.’ You can go back and write this grant that has 50 steps and questions that you’re confused about, and you say, ‘I can do this now, because it’s for you (the sea turtles).” When an injured sea turtle is found, calls are often made to local police, wildlife centers, perhaps even the Marine
YEAR ROUND TREE WORK
Mammal Stranding Center, or to Biehl and Deerr themselves. Once armed with the news, one or both are immediately on their way to aid the injured sea turtle. “You never know when you’re going to go, but you’re always ready,” Biehl says. “24/7,” Deerr adds. As of early September, 67 sea turtles in almost five years had been successfully rehabilitated at Sea Turtle Rescue and returned to the ocean. The public can help in both a monetary and emotional way. “The biggest way to get involved for us,” Biehl says, “and to really feel what we do, is our adoption program. A sea turtle’s medical costs can reach into the thousands of dollars easily. And so, we do $30 shared adoptions, and they (donators) get a magnet and the story of the sea turtle. When it gets released, we save the best photo of its release and send it only to those that adopted the sea turtle. You do become part of our story, part of our family, and part of us - the sea turtle’s recovery, literally.” For more information about Sea Turtle Recovery, visit www.seaturtlerecovery.org.

IMPLANT DENTISTRY Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in. Since that loose upper denture was made, she had been unhappy with the situation. She inquired about the possibility of a fixed bridge supported by implants. After careful examination, Dr. Chiu decided she would need very extensive bone repair in her sinuses, done in stages to allow her to have implants placed. This could take two years, because she is already wearing a removable denture. It interferes with the normal bone repair process in the other areas of her upper jaw. That’s why planning ahead is crucial when it comes to a treatment of an implant-supported fixed bridge, especially before the teeth are extracted. Often times, a lot of the “prep” work is done while a couple of teeth remain in the mouth to hold up a fixed temporary appliance. This allows for a faster healing time and more optimal placement of implants to support a fixed bridge.
Come and visit Dr. Chiu, who has placed and restored implant-supported fixed and removable prosthesis for many years. Your comfort and convenience are always Dr. Chiu’s top priorities. To know more about these procedures, please call (973) 377-0224. We are always happy to answer any questions you may have. To receive a COMPLEMENTARY IMPLANT CONSULTATION, simply mention this article during your appointment. Offer expires November 30, 2021.

Livingston Teen Rallies for Foster Children via Letters and Pictures
I
By Alexander Rivero f Kathleen Zhang reminds us of one thing, it is of the endless potential for finding inspiration in the everyday, such as a casual scroll through social media. It was on such an occasion in the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic that Zhang, a junior at Livingston High School, came across a post on the plight of foster children in the United States. What she read that day filled her with a sense of duty, she says, that refused to go away. “I read about these kids aging out of the system and falling directly into homelessness,” Zhang recalled, referring to the roughly 20,000 18- to 21-year-olds that are forced out of the foster system yearly and wind up without any place to go, one-fifth of which become homeless. She remembered feeling
aghast at stories of children “going through experiences at eight years of age,” she said, “that most people never endure in their whole lives.” Indeed, a quarter of the more than 400,000 American registered foster children have endured some form of PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), numbers that draw striking resemblances to those of returning war veterans. In any given month, 7,000 of those children are registered in
New Jersey. Zhang sprung to action. In July of 2020, she founded Letters to Foster Children, a charitable initiative that distributes letters, paintings, drawings—or creations that include elements of all three—to foster children across the U.S. The response, both in terms of incoming mail and support from local residents and friends, has been one of near overwhelming enthusiasm. “I thought the challenge would be getting people to pitch in,” Zhang said. “But I quickly saw that it would be in finding a way to manage the case load. People were so ready to help that it was hard to handle it all.” To date, the organization has received over 1,400 letters and art pieces from contributors as close as Queens and as far as Dubai, and has shipped them out
to foster children in all corners of the country. To send in a letter or artwork, simply follow the guidelines on the Letters to Foster Children website and submit the piece as a photo or scan to letterstofosterchildren@ gmail.com. The organization will then submit the piece to partner organizations throughout the country. Zhang wants to expand the organization beyond just letters. Her plans include organizing awareness events to shed light on the problems within the foster system; working with the private sector; running toy and book drives; putting together goodie bags; and partnering up with other charitable organizations with goals that match or compliment those of Letters to Foster Children. There is also, of course, the need to open up more
chapters, as well as recruit more volunteers, to manage the letters still pouring in. Letters to Foster Children currently has volunteer and leadership positions for participants seeking to assist. Perhaps Kathleen

Zhang’s most important reminder to us, after all, is that with a gesture as simple as a kind note and a stick figure sketch, we can instill in a lonely child the idea that his harsh world is not as harsh as it may appear.

Chef Rick Rodgers Returns to Teaching
F
By Steve Sears or West Orange resident and popular chef, Rick Rodgers, there was a void. He missed teaching. “I saw that there were more ways to teach people how to cook than just in a cookbook,” says Rodgers, who has written and cowritten many. “I saw that the online cooking school field was exploding, and I had so much experience as a cooking teacher, and I did this teaching in brick-andmortar schools. I retired from in person teaching about five years ago, but I still missed teaching, so that’s why I decided to start coffeeandcake.org. Now I’m teaching about once a week, and it’s going great.” With coffeeandcake. org, which ties in with his best selling Kaffeehaus book, Rodgers feels he has definitely found his audience - again. “I’m purposely doing desserts from European cafes and American diners that are a little bit more challenging, because there are already plenty of places where you can learn how to make chocolate chip cookies or banana bread,” says Rodgers, who has written books with some of the best bakeries in the United States, and is also a recipient of a Bon Appétit Food and Entertaining Award for Outstanding Cooking Teacher. “I definitely have something to teach people as far as baking goes. And then in November, I’m going to start adding some Thanksgiving classes.” Rodgers, 67, learned as he went along in the food industry. “What I didn’t know, I didn’t know,” he says of himself as a 16-yearold eatery worker in San Francisco. “That’s just the way it went throughout my career. I just kept building on previous experience.” A theater major at San Francisco State University, Rodgers feels this course

The overall health of every patient is our primary concern.”
choice helped him with his eventual cooking appearances on television and teaching online classes. “I didn’t foresee the amount of cooking in front of a camera that I was going to do in my career,” Rodgers says. “What happened was that by being a theater major, when I started getting asked to do cooking demonstrations, teach cooking classes, and to go on these different TV shows I was on, I was ready. No one had to teach me anything. It was like, ‘Line me up and put me in front of the camera.’ It gave me training that I didn’t know that I was going to have to use.” On his 24th birthday, Rodgers moved with friends to New York City, some of them Broadway actors. It changed his life. “That was another thing that helped me in my career,” he states, “being in the right place at the right time. I was not scared when I had to deal with celebrities on a personal level.” He first met actors Jerry Stiller and Ann Meara at an uptown restaurant, and started catering parties for them. “Then they started introducing me to their other celebrity friends.” Being hired to do catering for the French Embassy his catering company was
called Cuisine Americaine – propelled him further. “I had the cachet of being an American who was cooking for the French,” he says. While there, magazine editors, publishers, and food and beverage executives partook of his cuisine, and his book writing and recipe development career path was paved. His books have included Thanksgiving 101 and The Big Book of Sides, and he has also co-written cookbooks with celebrities including Frankie Avalon and Patti Labelle. “It’s really, really hard work to do a book, which is why I am hired to help them,” he states. “These people are all good cooks; they have the recipes. The questions are, ‘How are you going to get those recipes on to the paper? Who is going to type the book up? Who’s going to test the recipe?’ That’s the thing. When I think about my career, it’s an interesting job, and it’s a challenging job. I was doing three or four books a year because I was lucky enough that the editors were calling me and giving me the assignments.” He has also written 12 books for Williams Sonoma, which he is very proud of. “They’re such an arbiter of taste. They don’t choose their authors continued on page 25

continued from page 24 lightly.” Rodgers, who has been with his husband, Patrick Fisher, for 41 years, is a happy man. “He has seen a lot happening in my career,” he says of Fisher, then continues. “I would not be doing this hard work if it wasn’t fun and satisfying on some level, and I definitely think that’s what happens with people when they’re cooking. It’s that instant gratification, too, when you present something that’s delicious to your friends and your family and you get positive feedback. It makes you feel good.” For more information about Rodgers and his online cooking classes and books, visit www.rickrodgers.com and www.coffeeandcake. org.

West Orange Councilwoman Advocates for More Electronic Vehicles and Charging Stations
S
By Gary Simeone usan McCartney, a Council liaison to the Chamber of Commerce and West Orange Planning Board, has recently submitted a proposal for more electronic vehicles and charging stations in the Township. McCartney, who has served on the Town Council since 2002 and is serving in her fifth consecutive term, said that in her role as the West Orange Sustainable Jersey Coordinator and Town Liaison to the West Orange Environmental Commission, she felt these proposals would help the community become more environmentally friendly and energy efficient. “As part of the Environmental Commission, I wanted to find ways for us to be more energy efficient and invest in clean transportation,” said McCartney, who is the founder and owner of the First Mountain Preschool. “Some of the things we focused on at the meeting included bringing in more hybrids to our fleet of cars and looking at ways to obtain grants to introduce more electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.” McCartney said that she and another member of the Environmental Commission board attended the meeting last month via Google Zoom, and listened to a presentation by a company that specializes in EV charging. “This company, Plugzio, who specializes in electric mobility charging, reached out to me because they wanted to give a demonstration, and it was really very interesting
what they had to offer. Their approach was novel to us, where they presented the idea of placing gold charging boxes throughout our local municipal lots and streets. They estimated that the cost of these boxes could range from a price of $350 to upwards of thousands of dollars.” As part of the Town’s Green initiative, the councilwoman said she was also considering the idea of a solar carport in the town’s municipal lot, which includes the library, Police Department and the John P. Renna House apartment buildings. “I chose the Town Hall municipal lot and all of the other adjacent buildings that share the lot to house these solar carports, which are essentially overhead canopies,” said McCartney. “We could introduce these carports without risking losing any of our parking spaces.” McCartney is in her twenty-fifth year at the First Mountain Preschool, which was established in West Orange in 1997. In her time as an educator, she has designed statewide curriculum models and has previously served as an adjunct professor in Education and Administration at Seton Hall University and Montclair State University. Her long-term commitment to the West Orange community began in 2002 when she was elected to the Town Council. She has served in that capacity in 2006, 2010 & 2015. Her leadership skills earned her the position of West Orange Sustainable Jersey Coordinator, which she was elected to in 2009.

I Remember Dad: The Beloved Scoutmaster
S
By Richard Mabey Jr. erving as a Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 170, was one of my beloved father’s cherished ministry. Dad firmly believed in the saying, “it is better to teach a boy morals, than to rehabilitate a wayward man.” My dad unselfishly served as Scoutmaster for 28 years. Ten thousand memories, of Dad’s years as Scoutmaster, haunt the fibers of the weave and tapestry of the chambers of my heart. Dad had this old coffee can, that he kept hidden on a shelf of his basement workbench. Dad would put his spare change in that old coffee can, every Saturday morning, after breakfast. He would cash in the coffee can of change, once a year to pay for one or two scouts to attend summer camp. Dad called it the Campership. If a scout’s family was having a tough time, Dad would tell them about the Campership. All these years later, I can tell you that the Council Campership really didn’t exist. Dad’s accumulated spare change was the financial source of the Campership. The only ranks that Dad ever gave to scouts was that of Tenderfoot and Eagle Scout. Mr. Jack Floyd, Troop 170’s Assistant
Scoutmaster, pinned the Eagle Scout medal on my scout uniform, because Dad wanted to stand beside me as my father and not my Scoutmaster. But I remember how Dad used to say to a new Tenderfoot scout, “in a few years, I hope I’ll be presenting you with the Eagle Scout award. When I look back at it all, I amazed at how many young lives my dad touched. Dad loved scouting. He believed in the Scout Law and the Scout Oath. He took every word of those sacred promises of scouting, very seriously. I never once heard my dad say a bad word. I remember sitting in church one Sunday morning and the minister made a comment, disparagingly of truck drivers. The minister said, “oh, that fella swore like a truck driver.” I remember looking over to my father and seeing the hurt look on his face. My father never took a chemistry class in his life. Yet, he taught hundreds of boys a most basic chemistry lesson, that we breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide oxide, and a tree absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. Dad used this lesson for a two-fold purpose. First, to show evidence of a Supreme Being and secondly to teach the scouts to respect
nature. My father taught hundreds of scouts how to tie knots, tie lashings, how to use a map and compass, to apply basic first-aid skills, and to deeply respect all of nature. He taught the scouts to respect one another. To be good citizens. To find their God given talents. To be leaders. One of the most cherished memories of my father’s service as Scoutmaster, are centered upon the religious services that he and Mr. Donald Talbot, Assistant Scoutmaster, would lead on Sunday morning campouts. They would show the boys examples in nature, that showed the evidence of a Supreme Being. Boys of all faiths, would sit on fallen trees, boulders, and the hard earthen floor, and listen to the gentle and kind words of these two fine scout leaders. My father received many awards in scouting, including the coveted Silver Beaver, the highest award a volunteer scout leader can receive. But Dad’s most cherished award was a slice of a maple log, wherein the boys used a woodburning tool to carve in Dad’s name and title him “The Beloved Scoutmaster.” Richard Mabey Jr. is a freelance writer.

By Richard Mabey Jr. one of us have a written guarantee of tomorrow. When the sun sets tonight, it will be the last sunset for many, many people who share this planet with us. None of us know when the time will come when our Divine Soul will depart our body. It is the very serious responsibility of each and every one of us to find the diamond of truth, that is sometimes hidden within the lump of coal. I am not a theologian by trade. For the most part, I have earned my weekly paychecks in the arena of being a wordsmith, a writer, at times a proofreader and editor. I find myself torn at times, between maintaining a certain sensitivity toward all paths to the Divine One and sharing the golden truth granted unto me by all so many good people. This is a true-life story of one of the last endearing opportunities that my beloved mother had to share the love of Christ with the children living in the neighborhood of my church. At my church of Grace Baptist Church, it is a tradition to hold the infamous “Trunk or Treat” event for both, the children of my church and the children of the neighborhood. This Halloween event is usually held on Halloween night or the night before Halloween. It is generally well attended by both parents and children. It is such a fun evening. The children come dressed as
The Last Halloween
their favorite super-hero, a monster of some kind, an astronaut, or some other television character. There are usually a good two dozen cars parked in the big parking lot, parked so that the car trunks are facing the path that the costumed children and parents walk to collect their goodies. Each open car trunk is decorated with a unique theme. It is such a fun time and everyone has such a wonderful time. At the time of the Trunk or Treat event of 2019, Mom had been enduring severe chest pains from her damaged Aortic Valve. Mom was scheduled for heart surgery in early November. My sister, Patti, and I were concerned that the Trunk or Treat event might have been too much of a strain on our dear mom. But Mom insisting on going to the Trunk or Treat event. I was amazed by Mom’s devotion to the children who came to our Trunk or Treat car site. Sitting in her wheelchair, Mom had a basket of little candy bars on her lap. Mom chose not to simply throw the little candy bar into the child’s Halloween bag, but rather hand a candy bar to each child. As Mom would hand the little candy bar to a child, she would simply smile and say to the child, in a loving voice, “Jesus loves you.” Mom would hold the child’s hand for a moment or two as she shared these three words with
the little boy or girl. It is important to note that the “Trunk or Treat” event was clearly marketed and advertised as a Christian event, sponsored by a Christian church. So, there was no problem of Mom’s words being in conflict with a family’s belief system. It was made clear as the crack in the Liberty Bell, that Grace Baptist Church was sponsoring a Christian event. Parents were clearly told this when they registered a child for the Trunk or Treat event. For a few hours, that night, Mom forgot about her intense pain. It would be the last time that my dear, sweet mother would have the chance to share such an endearing moment with all so many children. I know it meant a lot to my beloved mother. Mom did have her heart surgery in November. Sadly, she had a stroke in the latter part of the middle of December. My heart broke when my mom went Home to be with the Lord, just two days before Christmas Day of 2019. In the last days of her life, before Mom had her stroke, she would often talk about the wonderful time she had at the Trunk or Treat event. In looking back, I am very grateful to my beloved Minister, Pastor Rocky Culpepper, for spearheading the wonderful Trunk or Treat event. None of us have any guarantee that we

will be here, in this physical body on this earth, when tomorrow comes. Each and every one of us have to find the golden truth of the existence of a Divine One. I have read the Holy Bible, cover to cover, several times. However, I am far from being an academician of the Bible. But I do know for sure, each and every one of us needs to sincerely seek the golden truth of the existence of a loving Divine Being. For truly, tomorrow knows no guarantee. 6 Special Ways to Celebrate Grandparents
sk anyone to recall their most treasured childhood memories, and you’re likely to hear tales about time spent with loved ones, grandparents in particular. As an adult, you may find yourself wondering how to help your kids create those magical moments with their grandparents. However, strengthening their bond with a beloved grandparent may be easier than you think. Take a trip back in time. Asking your grandparents about the good ol’ days may seem cliche, but it’s a wonderful way to discover new reasons to appreciate your elders as unique individuals with intriguing perspectives. Encourage your kids to ask their grandparents what life was like during their youth or how they imagined life in the 2020s would be. They can compare notes on their bucket lists; they might even find something to cross off the list together. If you share a love of history, talk through the family tree and capture all the stories that define your family through the years. Share a meal or dessert. It may seem like a small gesture but making a point to share a meal or dessert with a grandparent, especially one who lives alone, can have a marked impact. In a comfortable, family setting like Cracker Barrel, you can gather
together over authentic homestyle cooking while using the time for your kids to catch up with their grandparents and share stories. End the night with a classic, kid-friendly favorite like a Dirt Cup Dessert. Spar with spoons and hunt for all the gummy worms hiding in the delicious cup of cookie crumble “dirt.” Hit the road together. It’s often said that there’s no better way to get to know a person than to travel together. Pick a new place and make it an adventure to remember for your kids and their grandparents. Map out the route together as a family, choosing the landmarks, activities and pitstops you want to make along the way. Be sure to document the journey as a precious keepsake for yourself and your kids, and package those memories in a photobook or scrapbook as a gift for the next birthday or holiday. Create a care package. If distance keeps you apart, you can still find creative ways for your children to spend time with their grandparents. The Role of Staging When Diagnosing Breast Cancer
cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, and people who receive such news may be flooded with a wide range of emotions. When delivering such a diagnosis, doctors share vital information about their patients’ disease. Those details can go a long way toward easing patients’ concerns. Staging is an important component of cancer treatment. The National Cancer Institute notes that stage refers to the extent of the cancer, including how large the tumor is and whether or not it has spread, or metastasized. Learning the stage of the cancer, which is typically expressed on a scale of 0 through IV, helps doctors understand how serious the cancer is and the patient’s chances of survival. Staging also is used to plan treatments and potentially identify clinical trials that may serve as treatment options. The American Joint Committee on Cancer oversees the breast cancer staging system and utilizes the TNM system. Breastcancer.org notes that three clinical characteristics, referred to as “T, N, and M,” are used to calculate the stage of the cancer: • the size of the tumor and whether or not is has grown into nearby tissue (T) • whether the cancer is in the lymph nodes (N)
• whether the cancer has spread, or metastasized, into other parts of the body beyond the breast (M) Additional characteristics were added to the AJCC’s TNM breast cancer staging system in 2018. Though this has made determining the stage of breast cancer more complex, Breastcancer.org notes that it’s also made staging more accurate. That improved accuracy increases the likelihood that doctors will choose the most effective treatment plan for their patients, which should ease those patients’ concerns as they begin treatment. Staging is complex, and patients should know that staging alone does not dictate prognosis. The following breakdown, courtesy of the NCI, is a brief description of the five stages of cancer (stages O through IV). A more detailed description of breast cancer stages can be found at https://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/ diagnosis/staging. • Stage 0: This is diagnosed when abnormal cells are present but have not spread to nearby tissue. Stage 0 is also called carcinoma in situ, or CIS. CIS is not cancer, but it may become cancer. • Stages I through III: Cancer is present in these stages. The higher the number, the larger the tumor is and the more it has spread into nearby tissues. • Stage IV: The cancer has spread into distant parts of the body. Staging plays an important role in treating cancer. Recognizing the role of staging can help patients better understand their disease and the direction of their treatments. More information about staging is available at www.cancer.gov.

How Physical Activity Can Help in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
B
reast cancer is a complex disease that affects millions of women across the globe each year. Though the American Cancer Society reports that only about 4 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States are under age 40, women of all ages can take steps to protect themselves against this deadly disease. Exercise benefits women in myriad ways, and that includes lowering their risk for breast cancer. The ACS notes that researchers are increasingly linking exercise to a reduced risk for breast cancer. Though the reasons behind that link remain unclear, some theorize that the positive effects of exercise on body weight, inflammation, hormones, and energy balance could be why regular physical activity helps women reduce their risk for breast cancer. Body weight and breast cancer The National Cancer Institute reports that being obese after menopause can significantly increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer. In addition, the ACS attributes the rise in hormone receptor-positive breast cancers to an increased prevalence of excessive body weight. Routine exercise is a highly effective way to lose weight and keep weight off, which in turn could lower women’s risk for breast cancer. Being sedentary and breast cancer

Exercise is a not a sedentary activity, and that could be another reason why women who are physically active have a lower risk for breast cancer. The ACS notes that more than one study has linked sitting time to a higher risk of various diseases, including breast cancer. Researchers with the ACS analyzed data from 77,462 women, who they followed for an average of 15.8 years. None of the participants had cancer when the study started, but researchers found that women who sat for six or more hours per day during their free time had a 10 percent greater risk for invasive breast cancer than women who sat for less than three hours per day during free time. Does physical activity really reduce breast cancer risk? The human body is complex, and a host of factors, including those like age that women have no control over, can affect cancer risk. However, engaging in routine physical activity seems to be an effective way for women to reduce their risk for breast cancer. In fact, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation estimates that one-third of all breast cancer cases could be prevented with positive lifestyle choices that help women maintain a healthy weight, including exercise. Routine physical activity can be a significant weapon in women’s arsenal as they continue their efforts to prevent and overcome breast cancer.

Top Tips to Stay Safe This Halloween Season
uch like Christmas, Halloween is no longer relegated to a single day. A number of Halloween enthusiasts now begin decorating at the start of October. Hijinks and autumn revelry fill the air as individuals eagerly count down to the end of the month. Though the lightheartedness of Halloween festivities, such as costumes and candy, garner the bulk of celebrants’ attention, it’s important to take safety into consideration as well. According to the Mayo Clinic, children are twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween as other nights of the year. Cuts and burns also are more common on October 31. A good Halloween scare should come from costumes, not accidents or injuries. This Halloween, consider these safety measures, courtesy of Safe Kids Worldwide, the Mayo Clinic, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. • Make sure you’re visible when trickor-treating. Reflective tape, glow sticks, flashlights, or camping lanterns can make pedestrians more visible to motorists. • Pedestrians should walk on sidewalks if
they are available. When sidewalks are not available, walk facing traffic and do so as far off to the side of the road as you can get. • Drivers should be especially alert to pedestrians on Halloween. Drive slowly, as many kids scurry from house to house in search of Halloween candy. • Pedestrians and drivers should follow the rules of the road, stopping at intersections and crossing in crosswalks. • Consider alternatives to carving pumpkins, since the risk of being cut while carving is high. If you want to carve, leave the carving to adults. Utilize batteryoperated flameless candles or glow sticks to illuminate jack-o’-lanterns. • All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant. Make sure that costumes do not impede your ability to walk or see. • Test makeup to check for skin irritation before application. Remove it promptly after returning home. • Set up a buddy system so that no one is going it alone. Agree on a specific time children should return home. Adults should chaperone young children. • While incidences of candy tampering
may be minimal, no one should snack on candy until it has been inspected. Inspections also protect against food allergies. • The candy bounty should be rationed
so no one overindulges and feels ill later on. Halloween season is a fun time of year, but safety should go hand in hand with all the celebrating on this special day.
