Remembering 9/11 18 Years Later

By Steve Sears eptember 11, 2001 started out like a gorgeous late summer day.

The beautiful day soon turned ugly, as the biggest attack against the United States of America on home soil claimed 2,977 lives combined in New York City at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

New View Media Group reached out to various community members, seeking their remembrance of that fateful day.

Alex Roman Township of Mount Olive Councilman Alex Roman lost his Mom, 49-year-old Arcelia Castillo, on September 11, 2001. Instead of her normal 9:00 a.m., she had arrived early to work that morning at 7:45 a.m. to the World Trade Center North Tower.

American Airlines Flight 11 hit the tower at 8:48 a.m.

“I prefer to be left alone on 9/11,” says Roman. “Much like my mother, I’m not comfortable with being viewed as a victim. My kids also spend the day quietly reflecting. We have attended several 9/11 ceremonies in New York City in the past, but mostly we prefer to go to the 9/11 Memorial at

different times of the year.”

Roman celebrates his Mom’s life just like anyone else that has lost a loved one. “I never assume my loss is greater than anyone else’s,” he says. “I keep a picture of her at my shop along with a framed United States flag that was presented to us by President (George W) Bush.

I routinely talk about her to my wife and kids and how each of them have some of her qualities. Her name regularly comes up at family gatherings.”

“As 9/11 approaches, I feel guilty being happy (my birthday is Sept. 8). It’s like a rollercoaster ride.”

Ray Perkins Former Township of Mount Olive Town Council President Ray Perkins was on the West Side Highway of Manhattan on the morning of September 11, 2001.

“I was in the city that day that the attack happened, and I was on my way into midtown, and a plane probably hit a few minutes after I passed by there. I’m on my way to attend a meeting up near Grand Central, and I get a call from one of my colleagues, and he says, ‘Hey, a plane just hit the (World) Trade Center – and it was a commercial plane!’ I said, “You’re kidding me!’ I get up to my appointment – and I’m passing ambulances and fire trucks like crazy, they’re sailing down towards this place – and I get to where I’ve got to go, and continued on page 2

I then said, ‘I can’t believe this – oh my God!” Perkins headed to a pay phone (cell phone connections were knocked out that morning) line of about 200 people to wait and make a call, and then the second plane, United Airlines Flight 175, crashed into the South Tower. Perkins then exited the line and started running towards downtown, reached 23rd Street, then headed into a store to buy 12-packs of water, giving it to those who’d just experienced the most terrifying moments of their lives. “These people walking towards me look like someone had dumped flour on them, because now the buildings had collapsed.”

Perkins knew that Mount Olive needed to remember the lives that were lost that day, and he kicked a memorial idea in motion. “On (United Airlines) Flight 93 Ray Perkins at 911 Memorial dedication. that went down (in Shanksville, Pennsylvania), was Hilda Marcin, a woman from town, was employed through the Board of Education as a teacher. I had met Hilda; what a pleasant lady. She was moving out to live with her other daughter in California.”

Mayor Rob Greenbaum got involved, donations gathered, and current Council President Joe Nicastro’s stepson, Michael Lalama, came up with the design rendition. Perkins then forwarded the design to a Canadian company called Picture This in Granite, who took care

of the final product. “We got an amazing amount of support,” says Perkins. “It was tremendous. It was heartwarming to see the community members and the township employees that dedicated their time and expertise to getting this done.”

Bruno Varano officially became a United States citizen in 1961. The morning of 9/11, the Assistant Special Agent in Charge was at his office in Fairfield, New Jersey.

Varano, currently President of the Local 121 of the Federal Agent PBA, got a call that morning from one of his New York agents. “He said, ‘Listen, we got attacked.’ I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ I told him to cut it out and he said, ‘No, I’m telling you – we got attacked.”

“I then got a call from D.C. and realized it did happen.”

“It was right after the second tower fell that I got in there (to the city),” he remembers. “I’m not sure if you’ve ever seen that Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, The Terminator, and one scene showed that in the future there was a huge war, and there are atomic bombs, it was like hell – everything was gray, everything was cloudy, there was smoke and everything was destroyed. That’s what it looked like. It was incredible.” continued on page 4

“In my mind, they died as heroes.”

Tom Miller Tom Miller has been practicing fine art for years. He has a master’s in fine arts from the University of Idaho. He works in watercolor, colored pencil, ceramics, and more, and his topics are a variety. A Marine veteran, he was working at the time at Madison’s Fairleigh Dickinson University on an Operation Harvest Moon project, which is the operation he got injured in during his time in the Marines.

“Along comes the morning of 9/11, I’m at home waiting to go to a screenwriting course – it was a 9:30 class – I’m drinking a cup of coffee, and had the radio on, and heard of a plane crash (at the World Trade Center). So, I turn the television on to see what was up, and then I saw a second plane go in.”

Miller went to his class but first stopped at Columbia Turnpike and Park Avenue in Florham Park to view the on-goings. “I could

see it, just a bit of the towers and the smoke.

“I tried to get into the city, asked the Morris County sheriffs to take me in, but they couldn’t.”

Learning that the towers had fell during the class, Miller started going to work on his 9/11 artwork. He has roughly 65 pieces, and he still creates them. His creations are given to first responders.

Miller, 78, lost a neighbor, Michael Sorresse, in the attacks. “He was a neighbor and a friend. I would say he was in his 30s, just had gotten married, worked for Marsh USA Agencies up on the 101st floor of tower one. I really liked him. He was a really nice kid. Then there was Giovanna Galletta “Gennie” Gambale (of Cantor Fitzgerald). I did a ceramic sculpture of her missing poster – I got her family’s okay.”

He then deeply reflects. “It (9/11) was as important as when my partner died in my arms (during an Operation Harvest Moon battle in 1965),” says Miller. “So many people, such a senseless thing, and because Mike died, too.” continued on page 6

continued from page 5 Rita Weiner When 9/11 occurred, a big piece of Rita Weiner’s heart was ripped apart.

That morning, she was preparing to head into New York City with her daughter, Michele. “My husband called me and told me something had hit the World Trade Center. Then, while watching television, I saw the second plane hit.”

“We didn’t go in; no one went in. 9/11 was horrendous.” She pauses, then continues. “I was angry. I’m a New Yorker at heart and have always lived in the tri-state area. This is my heart, just like if you’re from France, Paris is yours. I grew up in the area -- Rockefeller Center, skating over there, Times Square, the whole bit - and to see it demolished like this… it was very, very hard.”

The next day, Weiner saw a Salvation Army ad asking for help at Ground Zero. Her Dad was alive at the time, and he saw the same ad. “He said, ‘When I was in World War II, the Salvation Army brought me blankets, they brought me hope, and I never forgot it.’

And he suggested I join.”

She worked with the Salvation Army on Thursdays, noon – midnight. And when Weiner, who prepared meals as a volunteer, and her entourage first arrived at the sight, she was shocked. “It was an absolute disaster. It looked like a nuclear explosion. It was like nothing I’ve ever seen, and the smell…I’ll never forget it. It was like decay, decomp. It goes in your nostrils and you never forget it for the rest of your life. The ash would be up to your knee when you walked through it.” She then adds, “You would think from such large office buildings, you would find desks and other things…nothing, it was like a giant crematorium. Another thing: we were not allowed to cry in front of the people. If you had to cry, you had to go in the back.”

However, it was a period Weiner would not regret. “It was cathartic and healing for me. It was healing for them and healing for me. Instead of feeling helpless and important, I was doing something. I was helping somebody hurting.”

After serving at Ground Zero and the “other” Ground Zero (a morgue) with the Salvation Army from September 2001 to May 30, 2002, she then became a tour guide for World Trade Center Tribute Tours from October 2005 until 2018. She eventually received an award from the center for doing 500 tours, and even got her first tattoo ever…on her back, which has the 9/11 symbol and reads, “Remember and pray”.

“It was in my DNA,” she says.

The whole experience changed her. “There’s pre-9/11 Rita, and there’s post-9/11 Rita. Pre9/11 was good; you never saw tragedy, you heard about Pearl Harbor, but you weren’t really a part of it. Post-9/11, I lived it personally; this was the first on my soil, in my town. I had hatred, and that bothered me, because I am a loving, giving person, and I don’t like having hatred in my heart. And I do believe when you have bitterness and hatred it kills you.” Serving with others fought the hatred. “I needed to express myself somehow to help others. The Salvation Army was the perfect way.’

Her advice? “Enjoy every day you have, because you see how quickly it can be taken away.”

Everyone was affected in one form or another by the terror attacks of what is most commonly known as 9-11.

People felt overwhelming shock and horror at the loss of life, injury and devastation. Despite it, Americans dug inside themselves and rose up-- united. They demonstrated integrity, strength, kindness and pure altruism, From First Responders to strangers helping strangers, people in droves helped without selfishness, without hesitation. On that day, Americans showed each other the qualities that all heroes were made of. They demonstrated exactly what it meant to be America’s best.

Jersey Cares September 11th Day Of Service and Remembrance Across New Jersey event stemmed out of the national movement founded in 2018. It annually celebrates the hope and unified humanity--not the horror-- of September 11, 2001.

Always ready to help and make a difference, Jersey Cares immediately thought of strengthening the communities deeply affected by the terror attacks in Hudson County.

a day of unity, empathy, and service,” Jersey Cares Service Events Manager, Meagan Mulligan explained. “It’s an enduring and positive tribute to those lost and injured. It is not about hatred or negativity but remembering. The event is very special, turning something somber into a day of celebration... keeping the spirit of unity and charitable service alive.”

This year Jersey Cares revitalized Jersey City’s Public School #12 Julia A. Barnes Elementary School in Jersey City, and Liberty State Park.

Warm and enthusiastic, Mulligan shared Jersey Cares is so passionate about this event, that they begin thinking about projects they would like to do way ahead of time, beginning in February. They reach out to the various organizations in May. The PS 12 Julia A. Barnes Elementary School in Jersey City is dedicated to making their students responsible, fulfilled, and successful global citizens. Revitalizing the school was an easy choice to make for Jersey Cares. Mulligan affirms that the organization often includes schools in their Day of Service and Remembrance event since they want to nurture them and give something positive to the next generation.

Volunteers of all ages gave their artistry a whirl by painting inspirational murals on the bathroom doors, brightening up the front of the school, and creating kits.

“The Thank you Kits for First Responders are a kind of a cornerstone for this event,” Mulligan related. “They are a

take-off of our care packages for servicepeople. They can include messages of gratitude, cards, gifts, and candy. Volunteers just love them. In addition to the joy they bring to the first responders themselves, the kits are something that families can do together. Even little children can make and decorate a card. Remembering the actions of these brave men and women is so important. Saying thank you to them is so important.”

First Responders are often familiar faces at the September 11th Day of Service and Remembrance Across New Jersey event. “It’s very heartwarming to see them. Volunteers are so honored to have them with us.” Mulligan enthused.

For those who enjoyed the outdoors and had green thumbs, the Liberty State Park project was ideal. Those aged 14 and up participated in maintaining the landscape, cleaning up, and beautifying the property.

“Liberty State Park is a beautiful and scenic location,” Mulligan said. “It’s impossible not to see the New York skyline, the views of the harbor, Lady Liberty, Ellis Island, and remain unaffected. It’s a perfect place to remember and reflect on the impact of what happened.”

The spirit of the day resonated with so many. According to Mulligan, approximately 200 people volunteered to help, making this occasion an uplifting one. Bring on the Smiles: Over 800 Children Shop Cost-Free at the NCJW/Essex Back 2 School Store

T

he 11th Annual NCJW/Essex Back 2 School Store (B2SS) brought much more than just grins on Sunday, July 28th as hundreds of children went shopping at a one-day pop-up store designed to help children in financial need in Essex County.

“I can’t wait to get new shoes! I want sparkles on them!” exclaimed a young girl to her volunteer personal shopper as they entered the store with her new cheetah print backpack opened and ready to fill.

Inside the gym, walls were lined with rows of brand new coats, sneakers, and clothing.

This year NCJW/Essex celebrated its 11th year of the B2SS, outfitting over 800 children with the help of more than 600 volunteers. The children shopped for brand new clothing, school supplies and personal care items, encouraging a well-equipped and confident start to the new school year.

The day started with a ribbon cutting ceremony for dignitaries and supporters of the store led by NCJW/Essex President Lesley Greenstein of Summit, NJ. B2SS cochairs Andrea Mintz, Stacey Laken and Laurie Schuftan, all Livingston residents, joined with dignitaries to cut the ribbon. What

followed was a long line of excited children, eager to enter and pick out their new items. The children, referred by over 35 social service agencies, were each greeted by a volunteer personal shopper who assisted them through their shopping journey. This year’s event was held at Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy in Livingston.

While the children shopped, parents and guardians visited the onsite Gaelen Family Resource Center where they could speak with representatives from organizations such as Advocates for Children NJ, the Essex County Family Justice Center, the NCJW/ Essex Center for Women, Planned Parenthood of Metro NJ and the Rachel Coalition.

University Hospital, a major participant at the Gaelen Family Resource Center, offered free health screenings and health information throughout the day.

The cost of school supplies is often overlooked as a major annual expense. Families that are living in poverty struggle with the rising cost demands of public education. In 2018-19, parents paid an average of $637 on school supplies for elementary school continued on page 10

NCJW/Essex believes that no child should start off the school year already behind, and has put together the B2SS for the past eleven years to meet this need. All of the items given away at the B2SS are free to children and their families.

“The entire experience was extraordinary from beginning to end,” said Debra Goldsmith, a volunteer personal shopper from North Caldwell, NJ. “Interacting with such eager children and being a part of the positive environment that NCJW/Essex creates at the Back 2 School Store is inspiring. I’m so glad to be a part of it.”

Ranging from college students to grandparents,

the passion each volunteer brought was undeniable through the evident excitement expressed from hundreds of children who filled the store. With three shifts throughout the day, volunteers underwent specific training on how to optimize the shopping experience for each child. From picking out pens and calculators to help finding jeans with the perfect fit, the personal shoppers guided and encouraged each child through every step.

Each year the Back 2 School Store is supported by grants and generous financial contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations, enabling the children to “shop” costfree but leave with million-dollar smiles!

Cycle for Survival Battles Still Against Rare Cancers

by Jennifer Goodman Linn and her husband, David, in 2007, survives this day and only becomes more beneficial because the movement started by a loving, fiery individual with no giving up in her being refused to quit.

Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) now owns Cycle for Survival, and Equinox is a founding partner. Equinox instructors lead high-energy, spin cycle rides at Equi-

nox locations across the country in January, February and March.

It’s all about funding the fight against rare cancers.

Sandy and Len Goodman reflect about their daughter.

“Jennifer was raised here in Livingston, she’s a member of the Livingston High School Hall of Fame,” Len says. “One thing about Jennifer that I think is important to know is that she was philanthropic throughout her whole life. When she started Cycle for Survival, it wasn’t the first time she was philanthropic. While she was in high school, she was President of her Key Club, and the Key Club has a Single Service Event every year. When she was the President, they took over the Codey Arena (in West Orange) and they ran an event for the Make-a-

Wish Foundation and raised $20,000 which, at that time, was the largest Single Service project they ever had.”

Jennifer then attended Duke University and graduated with honors, eventually going on to receive her MBA at Harvard University, where she met her husband. After departing Harvard, she worked as a Senior Executive for several companies. She and David married, and a year into the marriage she was diagnosed with MFH (Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma) Sarcoma, an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer which plagues the soft muscle tissue of the abdomen. She didn’t drink or smoke, and was in the gym every day a 6:00 a.m. An operation was performed to remove a football-sized tumor from her abdomen, and she was immediately sent over to Memorial

Sloan Kettering.

“I always remember the two of us sitting in the doctor’s office, and we received the diagnosis,” recalls Linn.

“We both made a very conscious decision. We were, of course, scared, frightened, whatever word you want

to use, and we had no idea what the future would hold.

But I remember us both consciously deciding to take that fear and put it to the side and try to do everything we could to help Jen, and then help other cancer patients as well.”

Cycle for Survival... continued from page 11 back to the doctors, nurses, and rest of the medical staff that had done so much to help her. “That was really the beginning of Cycle for Survival. Even during her chemotherapy, Jen enjoyed getting up for her 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. indoor cycling class at Equinox, and we thought about it and realized this would be perfect as a way to give back, it would be perfect as a fundraiser because it’s not a triathlon or marathon that requires months of training. Anyone can get on a stationary bike and ride a little bit, and we started to encourage friends and family to join us for this small, little fundraiser that we were putting on.”

Spin4Survival in 2007 was held at the Equinox Columbus Circle location in New York City. A second successful event was held thereafter, the name was changed to Cycle for Survival, and in 2009 the Linns engaged MSK and Equinox for further, official involvement.

Equinox is a huge part of Cycle for Survival’s success. Jennifer had stated from the beginning that Memorial Sloan Kettering was responsible for her physical well-being and physical health but looked

to Equinox for the emotional aspect. “She would get strength from being in those classes,” says Linn, “so when we first had this idea, all of these instructors at Equinox who had become Jen’s friends over the years didn’t hesitate for a second, and basically said, ‘Whatever we can do to help.’ In those early years, it was a grass roots type of effort with all Equinox employees just volunteering their time to help us on this, and what’s been really great to see is as the partnership has formalized over time and Equinox has become the founding partner, it seems like each year they’ve become a bigger and bigger part of the success for Cycle for Survival.

It’s been fantastic.”

“One of the best ways to describe Jen is that her personality and spirit comes alive,” adds Linn, describing the evident feeling during a Cycle for Survival spin. “What I mean by that is, when you go to one of these events, there are people dancing – she loved to dance. There are people who are in tough health situations that, despite those challenges, they’re filled with hope and optimism, and that’s the type of person she was; she was

filled with positive feelings. There is that feeling in the air that something is a bit magical, special, that anything can happen. And when Jen would enter a room, she would give that feeling to everyone in the room. There was the little extra, that little extra bit of energy, that extra feeling that something special is happening here and anything is possible. The events themselves mirror her personality.” One thing that’s important is that Jennifer always wanted it to be bigger than her, wanted it to be about others, and so all the choices made along the way bore that fruit. “It was not named after her, it was not all about her, it was about, ‘How can we help as many cancer patients as possible?’ And that you can see at the events as well, because while there are many people who are inspired

by Jen, there are far more people at the events who don’t know her and they’re inspired by somebody else – a friend or family member – who may be a survivor or maybe going through treatment. It was always in her mind to be bigger than her, and that has played out.”

Livingston Volleyball Player Helps U.S. Women’s Team Capture Silver in 2019 Maccabi PanAm Games

By Jerry Del Priore ayle Edelstein, a Livingston native and former Livingston High School volleyball player, just added another accomplishment to her athletic career, as the U.S.A. Women’s Volleyball team took home the Silver Medal in the 2019 Mexico City PanAmerican Maccabi Games in July.

The PanAm Maccabi Games, which take place every four years, is a multi- athletic competition for athletes of Jewish origin.

As a member of the USA Junior National Volleyball Team, Edelstein helped Team USA captured a Gold Medal in the 2017 Maccabiah Games that were held in Israel. That year, the red, white and blue crew defeated national junior teams from Cuba, Canada, Argentina and

Israel for the Junior Division Championship.

While the 18-and-above Team USA lost in four sets to Team Brazil this time around, the whole wonderful experience didn’t get lost on Edelstein one bit.

“It was awesome,” Edelstein recalled. “I had a lot of fun. It was very different than Israel, but it was great. “The skill level was a lot better than in Israel. We beat Cuba, 25-6 in the first round, but lost to Brazil in the end.”

Edelstein plays the setter position for her Division III college squad, McDaniel College -- a private liberal arts institution in Westminster, Md. She said the Pan-Am Games were a good way to prepare herself for the rigors of a long college volleyball season, which starts in August and ends in November.

“During the summer, I don’t get much real competition,” she said. “But this international competition really helps get me more than ready for college volleyball,” adding that Team USA played against older players of top skill level from all over the globe.

Edelstein, a soon-to-be 20-year old college junior, has played all versions of volleyball, including beach volleyball. But she said the indoor variety suits her the best.

“I love the indoor game the most, but I do enjoy the beach game,” said Edelstein, who also played a year of softball in high school. “But the beach game is totally different, and I should stick to the indoor game,” she said with a chuckle, citing the contrasting styles it takes to

excel on the sand, especially playing as one half of a two-member team.

With the 2021 Maccabi Games approaching in approximately two years, Edelstein said she would like to get one last crack at the international event in Israel. At that point, she’ll more than likely start working full time and enter graduate school for psychology not too long after graduation.

“My experiences (in international play) have been extremely positive,” the fivefoot-six-inch Atlantic Valley Volleyball Club player exclaimed. “I hope to play again in two years with thousands of Jewish athletes coming together; it’s pretty incredible.

Who knows what will happen two years from now, but playing in Israel would be a great opportunity.”

Members of Presbyterian Church of Livingston Complete Mission Trip to Puerto Rico

By Steve Sears wenty-six volunteers from the Presbytery of Newark, including two from the Presbyterian Church of Livingston, recently embarked on a special mission trip to San Sebastian, Puerto Rico to aid the community still recovering from Hurricane Maria.

A total of eight churches represented the Presbytery of Newark, and Reverend Daniel Martian, pastor, and a parishioner, Mavis Awuku, represented the Livingston church. The dates of the trip were July 28 – August 3.

“The purpose of the trip was to do mission and the repair phase,” Rev. Daniel says. “There is still an enormous number of things to do to repair the damage done from Hurricane Maria.

We had three mission sites to really help out and lend a helping hand, give a witness of hope and encouragement to the folks there, and to hear their stories. This mission trip was a dual thing.

Number one was to work, do what was necessary.”

At one mission site, the

team aided a homeowner with the aluminum roof of his home. The force of the hurricane had ripped the roof off, it had been replaced, but it needed to be painted and have brackets installed to hold down the roof in the event another bad storm arrives. The second site was El Guciao, the camp and conference center where the volunteer group stayed, and the third location was working at a hydro farm (a greenhouse with irrigation).

Per Rev. Daniel, one of the highlights of the trip was listening the many stories of the inhabitants of the area.

“Oh yes,” he says, “absolutely. We stayed at the conference center, and some of our people helped out there – the church needed to be power washed, they needed some painting to be done, and some other odds and ends.” He also says that the Executive Director of the center opted to stay on campus during the hurricane and, when it was over, opened the front door. Devastation lay at her doorstep.

“Total disaster - this was up in the mountain areas.”

According to the Pastor, he was impressed by the way the community members aided each other in the storm aftermath. While waiting for the aid to come from the government, everyone helped each other, and it was evident during the trip. The area the group was working in was across the street from a homeowner who owns several different pharmacies. Down the road was someone who owned a hardware store, and the folks the Pastor and the others were working with did catering, and someone else owned a grocery store – all continuing the healing. “It was the neighbors coming in and helping each other,” he says, “really living out ‘It Takes a Village.’”

For Rev. Daniel, it was evident that, “even in the midst of that (aftermath of the hurricane), good comes out.”

United States Power Squadron Offers State Boating Safety Course

Legislation in the state of New Jersey was passed a number of years ago requiring all boaters, 16 years of age or older, operating a power driven vessel including a personal watercraft (PWC), to complete a boating safety course. The legislation requires a minimum of eight hours of instruction with at least six hours of in-classroom study, homework, and a proctored examination. Those successfully completing the course will receive a New Jersey Marine State Police certificate that must be in the operator’s possession when

New Jersey Sharing Network Helps Others Through Organ Donation Facilitation

By: Danielle Incognito he NJ Sharing Network is a non-profit organization responsible for the recovery and placement of donated organs and tissues for the nearly 4,000 New Jersey residents waiting for a life-saving transplant. It is also a part of the national recovery system which currently serves 115,000 people on the national waiting list.

Gary Imhoff, Marketing and Communications Manager of the NJ Sharing Network (New Providence, NJ) shared, “In 2018, 678 life-saving transplants were made possible, 537 from deceased donors and an additional 141 from living donors. Every day, approximately three people are added to the New Jersey waiting list, and one person dies every three days while waiting for a transplant. One organ donor can save eight lives, and one tissue donor

can restore health to over 75 people.”

Kelly Bonventre, a hospital service manager at Saint Clare’s Hospital (Dover and Denville), helps educate the staff on the process and activity regarding the network’s mission. She networks and makes relationships based on the importance of work The Sharing Network does.

She shared that she makes rounds in the emergency rooms and ICU to provide the information to the specific areas in the hospital that would most likely benefit from the information. She also ensures that the staff is medically trained in case by case need.

One Flanders, New Jersey man’s life mission was to help others and save lives.

Even in his passing at St. Clare’s Hospital (Denville) on June 15, he fulfilled his mission as an organ donor for the NJ Sharing Network. He was 52 years old.

During his life, he accomplished great things and gave his life to helping others. He was a life-long member of the Flanders Fire Dept., serving as both past Chief & past President.

Fred also served Mt. Olive Twp. as Fire Marshal, Construction Official, Captain of EMS, and OEM Coordinator. He was an avid Yankees fan, enjoyed smoking cigars, playing with his pup, and spending quality time with his three daughters Kelsey, Morgan, and Riley as documented in his obituary.

The family showed his same compassion as they asked for donations to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers after his death.

nder New Jersey law, a person is protected from harassment on the basis of their race, national origin, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation, familial status or sex. Moreover, each school district is required to adopt a policy prohibiting harassment, intimidation and bullying (“HIB”).

These single session workshops will provide women experiencing life transitions with education and skills to reach their goals and eliminate unnecessary self-defeating thoughts.

On Thursday October 10th from 10:00 AM to 12 noon Transforming Fear will help you learn how to use your fears in a healthy way to reach your full potential; on Thursday October 17th from 10:00 AM to 12 noon Goal Getting will help you set goals and make positive changes in your life; Positive Self-Affirmations on Thursday October 31st from 10:00 AM to 12 noon, enables participants to identify positive traits to become your own cheerleader; and You First on Thursday November 7th from 10 AM to 12 noon will help you learn how to improve the quality of your life and put yourself at the top of the list, eliminating and identifying unnecessary drains on your energy.

September Computer Classes at NCJW/Essex Center for Women

eptember is right around the corner and what better way to get back into the swing of things than with computer classes at the Linda & Rudy Slucker NCJW/Essex Center for Women. Registration is now open for their Basic EXCEL class that will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning September 9th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Intro to WORD is scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Tuesday September 10th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Classes are open to all women regardless of their religious affiliation who want to improve their skills for job positions or for women who would just like to learn for their own personal use. These classes are six sessions each and held at the NCJW/Essex Center

for Women 70 South Orange Avenue, Suite 120, Livingston. There is an $85 fee for each course, and registration is required.

The Center for Women also offers low-cost career services for women who would like to enter or re-enter the workforce. Additional free services are available for displaced homemakers.

A displaced homemaker is defined as a woman who has lost her primary source of income due to divorce, separation, or the death/ disability of a spouse. The Career Services Program offers one-on-one job counseling, as well as seminars in career choices, resume writing, job search strategies, and interview techniques. Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience

O

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience.

Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event.

Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering.

“I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab.

Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.”

Schwab joined the

Alumni Board of Epic Experience as an Outreach Specialist in June 2015.

In 2017, she became the Alumni Team lead, and in 2018 joined the Board of Directors.
