Madison Church Features Pollinator Meadow
By Laurie Saloman t. Paul Inside the Walls is drawing more than just devout Catholics lately. Thanks to Pam Lewis, the grounds of the stately religious center on Madison Avenue are abuzz with honeybees and butterflies, drawn by a recently planted pollinator meadow brimming with colorful life. Long concerned about humans’ impact on nature, Lewis served on the Watchung Environmental Commission while she lived in that borough. After moving to Madison last year, she hoped to find a new project that would satisfy her desire to nurture the earth and its creatures. As she strolled the grounds of St. Paul one day, contemplating whether this would become her new spiritual home, she noticed that there were no bees or other pollinating insects in sight— something that is, unfortunately, happening everywhere. “The [bee] populations are catastrophically dwindling all over the world,” she said. “There’s not enough foraging for them for nectar sources.” Lewis, along with many environmentalists and scientists, puts part of the blame on a class of pesticides known as neonicoti-
noids, which the Environmental Protection Agency has approved for use in the U.S. but which is banned in Europe. Lewis said a parasite called the varroa mite, which attacks bee colonies, is another cause of their reduced numbers. Lewis called Allan Wright, the Academic dean for Evangelization at the center, and told him she’d like to plant a pollinator meadow containing a wide variety of flowers and plants for the bees’ benefit. Her proposal was approved, and she was soon joined by Madison resident Gene Cracovia and his team of master gardeners as well as Barbara Gill, a fellow center attendee, in setting up the garden. The project was
also supported by the Sustainable Madison Advisory Committee (SMAC), chaired by Stephen Stocker. According to Lewis, Cracovia and his gardeners did the heavy lifting, digging beds with a backhoe in the summer heat. By the time the meadow was ready for planting this past July, Lewis and her team had 16 native pollinator plants ready to put into the earth, including zinnias, sunflowers, butterfly milkweed, partridge pea, cosmos, coreopsis, purple cornflowers, poppies, lupine, bee balm, crimson clover and Mexican hat. By August their efforts had bloomed and Lewis deemed the meadow “just spectacular.”
Staffers at the church have taken on the responsibility of watering the plants, which continue to shine with color and attract hordes of flying friends. The public is invited to visit the grounds, which include a main 50’ by 100’ wildflower meadow and a smaller prayer garden with additional plantings, before cold weather sets in. The plants will, however, grow again in the spring. Lewis, who takes seriously her role as a steward of the earth, finds joy and peace in the landscape. “It’s such a magnificent vision and it makes me wish that every town could create a pollinator meadow,” she said.

he Madison Chamber of Commerce 2016 Halloween Parade & Magic Show is scheduled for Sat., Oct. 29. Children and their parents are invited to attend a Halloween costume parade followed by a magic show and trick-or-treating in the downtown business area. This year’s event is being sponsored by Marc Anthony Salon, and Sugar Rush, in Madison. At 12:30 p.m., The Annual Halloween Parade will start in front of the Hartley Dodge Memorial Bldg. Participants will march to Green Village Rd., to Main St., and finish on Waverly Pl. and Lincoln Pl. From 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., The Joe Fischer Magic Show will be held on the corner of Lincoln Pl. and Waverly Pl. In case of rain, the show will be held inside the gym
at the Madison Junior School. Following, children in costume are invited to trick-or-treat through the downtown business district until 3 p.m. Participating stores will display a bright orange and black jack-o-lantern in their windows. Local Kiwanis Club Seeking New Membership
he Kiwanis Club of the Chathams and Madison was chartered on Aug. 7, 1930. Worldwide, the Kiwanis club has about 280,000 members – with a mission to change children’s lives. The local club currently sponsors five groups to help youth mature into caring and concerned adults. The groups are: Madison High School Key Club, Chatham High School Key club, ECLC of New Jersey Key Club, Chatham Middle School Builders Club, and St. Patrick’s Middle School Builders Club. Funds to support these and other worthy causes are raised by the Kiwanis Club. Amongst the club are a variety of committees. From the finance committee to community services, all members actively partake in individual responsibilities for the club. Recently, Justin Montanaro has been appointed to head the Publicity Committee. Justin has been living in
Madison for more than a year, and is the director of Admissions at Pine Acres Healthcare and Rehab Center in Madison. His favorite part of his job is the ability to help others on a daily basis – which was a major reason for him joining with the Kiwanis. The Kiwanis, as mentioned, has been serving the youth in the area since 1930. As one of the younger members of the club, a big part of Montanaro’s role has become to increase membership. Many members of the club have upwards of 30 years of service, and they are in need of new members. If anyone might be interested in joining the Kiwanis, reach out to Montanaro at 973-714-6656. Madison Education Foundation Marks $1 Million Milestone With Last Year’s Grant Awards
he Madison Education Foundation (MEF) awarded approximately $90,000 in educational enrichment grants in the 2015-16 school year across all five Madison District schools. “Last year, with the close of our Spring Grant Cycle, MEF proudly marked a major milestone of over $1 million in grants awarded since we began in 2003,� said MEF President Clare Sievers. “We are proud to have awarded over 300 grants in the past 13 years to meet the requests of teachers from grades pre-K - 12. Working closely with teachers and district leadership, MEF is able to provide enrichment tools and resources that enhance the academic and creative experience of our students. Of course, it is the incredible support we receive from district families and businesses that allow us to say “yes� when an enthusiastic teacher submits an innovative idea.� says MEF Grant Committee Co-Chair, Joanne Spigner, says “This was another banner year of grants, with over 75 teachers involved in the 41 grant applications that the Board of Trustees approved last year. We continue to be inspired by the level of enthusiasm and drive our teachers bring to enriching their classrooms.� Elementary students across the district are benefitting from a tremendous variety of grants awarded to their
teachers this year, including: clay for art projects, supplemental reading aimed to encourage young readers beyond the scope of the classroom library, timers for physical education classes, wellness tools and yoga instruction as well as a music organizational system that was co-funded by Madison Music and Arts Association (MMA). At Kings Road School (KRS) a vegetable garden is in the planning stages and a Buddy Bench has been placed strategically on the playgrounds at Kings Road School and Torey J. Sabatini (TJS). The Buddy Bench is now used to encourage inclusion and empathy while fostering friendship among the students at recess. Classrooms at TJS will enjoy the addition of headsets for use in foreign language classes and manipulatives to encourage better understanding of math concepts. At Central Avenue School (CAS), students will receive an author visit from Nick Bruel, notable author of the “Bad Kitty� children’s book series. Special education classrooms will benefit from Watchminder Watches to help students manage time spent on activities as well as Google Read & Write, which will also be utilized at MJS. “MEF has funded many pilots for reducing student stress, but yoga has been my favorite to date,� says Maureen Magnani, CAS teacher, reading specialist and certi-

Teachers at Madison Junior School received a variety of grants, including two types of robotics to usher in the transformation of the MJS Library into a new Makerspace: Ozbots and Cubelets. These tools will be used along with lesson plans to enhance core curriculum for both math and science and encourage students to experiment and discover the new possibilities of STEM building blocks. Additional grants include: FM Systems for several classrooms, a Memoir Writing Workshop, a Met Museum trip for eighth graders, which included a scavenger hunt amongst ancient civilizations, as well as a trip for sixth graders to Morristown Mayo Performing Arts Center to see “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.” Madison High School will get to experience a full-day Poetry Festival funded with support from the Geraldine Dodge Foundation and MEF. Last spring six published poets were featured. MHS students were challenged to think and express social

issues through the lens of a poet and find new ways of describing things, without stating the obvious. Roberto Carlos Garcia, visiting poet, encouraged students to pursue poetry and express themselves “fearlessly.” Additional grants include: an Engineers Teach Algebra program, EMC Masterpiece Access for Literature, archery equipment for PE, and a Starlab Portable Planetarium. Cameras and accessories for visual arts, Chromebook headsets for foreign language classes and support for the Debate Club were also awarded. MHS courtyards will be revitalized to allow more hands-on use by biology students during their ecology and genetics units. MHS’s very own TV & Video Production Studio continued to build out over the course of the school year and currently the new control room, stage for filming, Tricaster switching unit, professional lighting and other new equipment purchased with an MEF grant are all being actively utilized by MHS students.

Life-sized Sundial Featured At Frelinghuysen Arboretum

Shively The earliest surviving sundials can be dated back to ancient Egypt circa 1500 BC,” explains Gold Award Girl Scout Alexandra Levoyer in the sundial brochure she created to accompany her project. Originally known as “shadow clocks,” the sundial was the most reliable method for timekeeping even well into the 14th century, Levoyer writes, and sundials remain an interesting and whimsical aspect of many gardens around the world. Now a freshman at TCNJ, Levoyer designed the sundial for the Frelinghuysen Arboretum while she was a senior at Morris Country School of Technology. For the project, Levoyer of Parsippany decided to create a “human sundial,”

which incorporates a person as part of the sundial to tell the time. As a youth volunteer at the Arboretum for the past four years, Levoyer knew of the staff’s dream to have a sundial like this on the property. Gwen Montgomery, the Senior Horticultural Program specialist at the Arboretum, explains that many other arboreta incorporate human sundials into their gardens as
they are “something of interest to children” and are often an ornamental feature in historic gardens such as the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. “It took her over 100 hours to research and construct [the sundial],” explains Montgomery, going on to explain the great time and care Levoyer spent with her father in mapping out true north with a compass. Levoyer also used a GPS for ac-
curacy on the placement of the stepping stones which mark the hours. In her research about sundials, Levoyer was able to contact the American Sundial Association and get longitude and latitude numbers for Morristown specifically to generate the most accurate time for the sun clock, explains Montgomery. The stepping stones which represent the hour markers and the date-scale were cast by hand and Levoyer’s sundial also allows the user to account for Day Light Savings Time. According to Levoyer’s brochure, all sundials consist of two parts. The first part, the base plate or faceplate, is the surface which marks the hours of the day. is an Analemmatic sundial, which means that that the gnomon of the dial moves according to different factors throughout the year. The sundial is located near the Branching Out Children’s Garden at the Arboretum which is on the parking lot side of the garden and is approximately 12 ft. by 30 ft. Construction for the sundial took around a year to complete from its conception to its completion in May. The Arboretum held a public dedication of the sundial at that time. The Arboretum is free and open daily to the public from sunrise to sunset. In the case of a human sundial, a person takes the place of the gnomon. To create an accurate marking of time with the human sundial at the Arboretum, the person acting as the gnomon must stand on a date-scale slab according to the current month and raises an arm overhead to cast a shadow, allowing their shadow to fall on the coinciding hour stone, or between them depending on the time of day. Levoyer explains in her brochure that there are “more than seven different types of sundials” and the sundial she has created at the Arboretum

Motivation Sweetens The Recipe For Weight Loss
t a recent exercise class, a new member walked in at least half way into the start of class. No biggie, I was few minutes late myself. But when I noticed that she was exercising without any shoes on, I thought well now that’s motivation! The instructor stopped class and ran out to her car thinking she had an extra pair in her trunk, as they happen to wear the same size, but realized they were no longer there. When asked where her shoes were, the member responded, ‘I just couldn’t find them.’ Exercise and dieting go hand and hand, most trainers and fitness consultants would agree, when it comes to weight loss. But it is that third element that makes all the difference. Like drinking coffee without cream and sugar, trying to lose weight without that key ingredient, motivation, it just does not mix well. No matter what the goal, success is hard to achieve without that motivation. Some

may give up their lunch hour to walk four miles every day. Others may give up something they love like eating dessert or drinking alcohol. Some figure if they exercise everyday they will lose weight, but that is not always the case. Most individuals, once they reach that magical age of 45, need to push themselves even harder or add on even more exercise to their regular routine. Instead of running four miles, run twice that day and try for six miles. One dad I know spent his free time running his kids around to activities. But he found his motivation when he jumped on that treadmill 11 p.m. at night to still squeeze in that run while others would probably be watching the news or hitting the hay. Back to that woman at my class, as we were doing our squats, she looked at me with an expression of pain. The class was challenging. I looked at her and told her I admire her motivation. This mother was late to class, missing almost half of it, but still showed up
without shoes on her feet. Toward the end of class, two other women came in to the building, not to exercise, but to set up for a funeral repass for a friend who just died. As they were arranging the tables and lining up the trays filled with delicious pastries as the sweet aroma of coffee filled the room, we were toning with our weights, doing sit ups on the mat and stretches at the end. I was grateful and appreciative for that

moment that I was able to be part of a group of women sharing in an exercise class bonded by the same goal of taking care of our most precious gift from God. We have one body and must be disciplined to take care of it no matter what it takes. Wearing athletic shoes does help of course, but if ‘by any means necessary’ is your motto, and that works for you, by all means, that is the way to go to lead you to a path toward better health and fitness.
