process then it was before. The affordability and access to food has been revolutionized. Some might argue that it has not been a good thing. However most people are purchasing, transporting, wrapping, storing and sometimes even cooking their food in plastic film or bags. All this soft plastic has to go somewhere once it is discarded. Currently municipalities do not collect plastic film and bags as part
of their recycling programs. Some retailers in New Jersey, however , including ACME, McCaffrey’s Food Markets, Stop and Shop, Target and Whole Foods, do collect clean, dry plastic film to be recycled. The sheer volume of soft plastic makes changing the way it is dealt with daunting. According to the NCSL, National Conference of State Legislatures, “States continue to consider strat-
egies to reduce the use of carryout plastic bags from grocery stores and other retail outlets. Regulating bags can mitigate harmful impacts to oceans, rivers, lakes, forests and the wildlife that inhabit them. Reducing bag use can also relieve pressure on landfills and waste management. While some states are focusing on implementing effective recycling programs, others continued on page 2

By Anastasia Marchese ne of the looming challenges facing humanity in the 21st century is the growing scourge of plastic pollution. There is a continent size collection of plastic waste floating in the Pacific Ocean. There is microscopic pollution in water supplies. Even washing clothing made from fleece can pollute the ground water. Microderm abrasion scrubs contain plastic pollutants that build up in rivers and streams. Single use plastic and the near ubiquitous use of plastics in everything from transparent plastic seals on yogurt cups, to plastic bottles to plastic fabric, plastic is everywhere. The negative effects of plastic on the environment are becoming apparent at an ever alarming rate. Still, the widespread use of plastic packaging has made preserving food and keeping it sanitary a much more convenient and cost effective

Camp Focuses On Literary Instruction
hatham High School plans to host Nerd Camp from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sat., May 20. Nerd Camp NJ is an EdCamp “unconference” with an exclusive focus on literacy instruction. It appears with the hashtag #nErDCampNJ as a means of emphasizing the capitals E & D for EdCamp. All attendees come to Nerd Camp to present and attend workshops for free. More than 60 authors will be participating in the author meet and greet at CHS from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. The authors will spend the morning presenting panels and workshops
to K-12 teachers, administrators, librarians and pre-service teachers from the New Jersey area, and they’ll be available to the entire community for book signings in the afternoon. Local independent booksellers have been informed, and Barnes and Noble in Morris Plains will be holding an in-store book fair the week before on Sat., May 13, so young readers can purchase books prior to the day of the signing. Staff from The Curious Reader bookstore will be selling books in the CHS library the day of the event. In addition, ESPN reporter, author and former
English teacher Tom Rinaldi will be speaking to teachers in the morning before workshops begin. Penguin Random House has donated copies of his book, “The Red Bandanna,” to all of the secondary teachers, librarians and administrators attending the conference. Rinaldi will sign copies of his book for the educators in attendance that morning. CHS English teacher Oona Abrams has spearheaded the organizational planning for this event. For more information or to sign up to attend, see the Nerd Camp website at http:// nerdcampnj.weebly.com/.

Plastic Recycling Challenge... cont. from front page are attempting to impose bans or fees to discourage the use of plastic bags altogether.” Towns across the country are also considering how to best address the overwhelming burden of plastic garbage going into their local landfills. Soft plastic waste does not break down in landfills and is liable to fly away, thus polluting area waterways. The Chatham Borough Environmental Commission has been considering the best way to address the situation as a community. According to the borough’s website, the commission “debated various methods of reducing plastic film usage through plastic bag taxes on businesses or
consumers, to encouraging re-usable bags, to banning plastic bags in the town altogether. In the end, we concluded that a first step would be to quantify current plastic bag and film usage within Chatham Borough, and to raise awareness throughout the community by asking residents to remove the plastic bags from the waste stream.” The town is taking part in a six month long initiative challenge in partnership with Trex. The goal is to collect 500 pounds of soft plastic waste. According to the Trex website, grocery bags, bread bags, case overwrap, dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeve, ice bags, wood pellet bags, Ziploc and other releasable bags, produce bags, bubble
wrap, salt bags, and cereal bags are all acceptable. However, all plastic must be clean, dry and free of food residue. Trex recycles these products into composite decking and railings. If the borough reaches its goal, Trex will gift an outdoor bench to the community. According to the Commission, “residents can deposit their ‘bag of bags’ into bins at the town recycling center.” The initiative began in March and runs through August. Chatham High School Key Club To Pack 20,000 Meals
By Henry M. Holden he Chatham High School (CHS) Key Club is partnering with Outreach Inc., an Iowa-based international company, to sponsor a meal packing event helping Morris County food pantries. The Key Club’s goal is to package 20,000 meals on April 29. “The Key Club is part of its parent organization,
the Kiwanis Club, and sponsored by the Chatham-Madison Kiwanis Club,” said Kiera Spadaro, CHS art teacher and Key Club advisor. “The Key Club is a service organization open to any student during the school year,” she said. “Our Key Club students are asked to complete 36-hours of community service in three different categories;

school, community, and outside hours, which are areas they seek themselves. “This food program counts toward the 36-hour program,” said Spadaro. “We have 250 members involved in our club but, we don’t know yet how many will be involved in this effort. “We have two one-andone-half-hour shifts in which we need 45 volunteers for each shift. We’ll have well over 90 volunteers during this event.” The high school holds the event in the cafeteria. “This is an assembly line event at which we are packing 20,000 meals,” said Spadaro. “They’ll get training on how to weigh the ingredients, package and seal them, and box them with X number of
meals per box. For this event, the Key Club is doing a rice and beans meal. Outreach Inc., partnered with Iowa State University’s Food Science to create several nutritious and tasty domestic meals available for those who run these kinds of events. “There’s an oatmeal, or a pasta and sauce meal, and others, so we chose the rice and beans for this effort,” said Spadaro. “Outreach, is based in Iowa, so all the raw ingredients come from them,” she added. “The ingredients are FDA approved and they are balanced for nutrition. The company is sending predetermined amounts of the ingredients to us. The ingredients are bought through a separate fund raising drive. “The ingredients come
in large bags and we separate them and divide them down into smaller portions for each meal,” she continued. “All the volunteers get training for this and each person will do a specific job. “There are three different production lines,” said Spadaro. “We hear from Outreach that this becomes a little competitive, although friendly, with one line seeing if they can out
pack the other lines. “I’m looking forward to this event because Key Club members here at Chatham High School are very good at responding to requests for help,” she says. “When people are running events we always provide volunteers, so we can give a helping hand to others.” This is the largest effort CHS Key Club has ever held. continued on page 4

Chatham History Shared Through Photos
T
By Stefanie Sears he city of Chatham has come up with some creative ways to preserve and share the town history through photos. One is a photo gallery now on display at the Chatham Township Municipal Building and the other is a jigsaw puzzle up for sale. The Chatham Township Historical Society put together the photo gallery. The Chatham Historical Society created the jigsaw gallery, which was designed by Ingrid Hoerrner, Chatham High School graduate
and a currently sophomore at Parsons School of Design in New York. “Ingrid volunteered to help with the design,” says Ann Rea, the Chatham Historical Society Publicity chair. “The puzzle was our idea and we liked how we used various photos in our first puzzle so wanted to continue that.” This is actually not the first time the society has produced a photographic puzzle. They created one back in 2015, which sold 250 copies. However, the new puzzle will include
different photos than the original. Searching on Google for inspiration for the 2017 puzzle, Hoerrner discovered the 1910 map and appreciated the colors. She placed circle or oval shaped black and white photos onto this background to add an extra effect and to make solving the puzzle that much simpler. The puzzle exhibits various moments from 1880 to the 1950s, such as a 1902 local baseball team, the borough’s original motorize fire truck, a grocery store and a float

In addition, they sponsor several local and national charitable organizations with student volunteers and/or fundraising activities. As a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, Outreach
Inc., has helped to package more than 354 million meals that have been distributed across the United States and around the world. Outreach Meal Packaging Events are set up across the U.S. to engage businesses, religious and civic organizations, schools and volunteers of all ages to package nutritious meals for the hungry. We’ve found many people just enjoy seeing some of the old photos and it’s a great conversation starter!” The jigsaw puzzle consists of 672 pieces and costs $20. It can be purchased through the “Publications” page on the Chatham Historical Society website, in person at the Library of the Chathams or the Farmer’s Market when that is available. “We have a big WWI memorial planned,” says Rea, of future endeavors, “We put on a locally fa-

During the opening celebration, Chatham Township Historical Society Co-President Patricia Wells gave a PowerPoint presentation about the photos and their backgrounds and discussed Schwartz Dairy and Noe Farm greenhouses, which were family-run businesses that farmed the land. Other interesting incorporations in the photo time capsule are newspaper articles and a film poster for the “Saving The Great Swamp: Battle to Defeat the Jetport” documentary, which tells the story about the 1960s grassroots movement that prevented the Port Authoricontinued on page 5

Madison Public Library Director Retires After 46 Years Of Devoted Service
M
By Stefanie Sears adison Public Library’s beloved library director of 46 years, Nancy Adamczyk, will be retiring in May and was honored at the Friends of the Library sponsored Annual Gala on Sat., March 25 at the library. Presenters included Mayor Robert Conley, Library Board of Trustees President Thomas Binting-
er, Friends of the Library Chair Sylvia Luber, Children’s Services Department Supervisor Emily Weisenstein and Circulation and Interlibrary Loan Department Supervisor Ralph Graham. “It was a wonderful evening celebrating the library, visiting with the attendees and enjoying the delicious refreshments,” says Adamczyk, “The mayor presented the traditional
rose medallion given to retirees and surprised me with the gift of a borough government chair. The Friends of the Library presented a recent portrait of me, which is displayed in the library.” The plaque on the photograph reads, “Nancy Adamczyk, Madison Public Library Director – In Appreciation for 46 Years of Exceptional Leadership and Devoted Service – May

1970. Eight years later in January 1978 she became library director, succeeding Elizabeth Budell, and faced some minor trials with her new position.

Madison Chamber Hosts Annual Home Show
he Madison Chamber of Commerce plans to host its third Annual Home Show 2017 on Sat., April 22, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at The Madison Junior School. For the benefit of consumers, the Home Show will gather local contractors and home profession-

Moving into the administrative office was a major change, especially considering I was 30 years old supervising many older employees. Admittedly, I missed the direct interaction with the public that I had experienced on the reference desk.” Another change she experienced in her profession was the evolution of technology. So yes, that means witnessing the rise, and fall, of microfilm. “When I first arrived we checked out books and media on a microfilm system, so an employee needed to scan the microfilm for overdue items,” she says. “Now that information is
readily available by clicking a couple of keys.” Nowadays the library works with other libraries through the Morris Automated Information Network (MAIN), which provides collections from 37 libraries. “The Internet and online databases help us provide reference services much more efficiently,” Adamczyk continues, “Our PR materials are disseminated via the website and e newsletters. My role has been primarily in the administrative planning within our library, working on the MAIN Board and serving on Madison’s RoseNet Committee during the early stages of the project. Madison was at the forefront of
and energy efficient. “Whether you’ve been in your home for years or just moved in, the Home Expo is a one-stop shop for all your home improvement needs!” said Karen Giambra, executive director of the Madison Chamber of Commerce. “Get advice from professionals right
here in your backyard.” The event is free of charge to the public and is presented by the Madison Chamber of Commerce. For information or an application to be a vendor at the Home Show, contact Giambra at 973-377-7830 or by email at MadisonChamber@gmail.com.
The Chamber’s website, which features an events calendar, a membership directory and other resources, is located at www.MadisonNJChamber.org. The Chamber, founded in 1943, is a non-partisan, non-profit organization of more than 180 dues-paying member organizations pro-

community network with the introduction of RoseNet.” The building itself has also undergone some evolutions of its own during Adamczyk’s career, such as its transformation into a community center. “During a visit to the library today you will see young children enjoying a program, others using the age-appropriate software on computers in the Children’s Department, older students being tutored and working on group projects, adults using their laptops and the Library’s wireless to ‘work from home,’ people of all ages reading, and adults attending a lecture, film or musical presentation.”
Of course, the library has faced some physical makeovers throughout the years as well. “In 1993 we opened two additions, one being the Local History Center that is shared space with the Madison Historical Society. More recently we refurbished the Children’s Picture Book Room and lobby area. During the strategic planning process completed several years ago it was noted that the building needed updating and refreshing. There are plans to continue that work in the coming years.” Unfortunately, Adamczyk will not be around anymore as library director to see these future plans unfold. However, she
is pleased with her decision to retire. She believes that now is the right time as her current tasks draw to a close and looks forward to her next path in life. “The retirement decision has been at least a twoyear process,” she says. “I felt it was time for someone new to bring a fresh eye to the library. Now is a logical end point for me as the HVAC installation and current renovation projects are completed. The Library Board of Trustees and new director will work with borough officials in planning the next phase. I have a big birthday in early May, so it’s time for me to travel, pursue new volunteer opportunities, and visit with family and friends.”
Adamczyk’s successor, chosen by the Library Board of Trustees, is former Director of Mountainside Public Library Marilyn Favreau. She and Adamczyk will work together the final two weeks of April and Favreau will take on her fulltime position on May 1. Adamczyk leaves the final remarks: “I feel very fortunate to have enjoyed such a wonderful career. Madison is a great town and very supportive of its library. All these years I’ve worked with dedicated employees, Library Trustees, friends, board members and local government officials. I’ve met so many interesting people and enjoyed a wide variety of experiences.”

Boy Scout Troop 25 Turns Hunger Into Hope
E
By Dawn M Chiossi aster and spring- at this time of the year particularly, it is easy for thoughts to turn to ones of renewal and rebirth. When the outside is finally bursting out with blooms and greenery, thoughts invariably turn to ones of rejuvenation. It is a time of celebration and abundance; of opulent holiday dinners or eating treats such as colorful hard boiled eggs, or sweet candy. This is not the case for everyone, unfortunately. Hunger and the lack of food is a definite and undeniable problem for individuals and families alike in America today. One in seven Americans live in households that are struggling against

To collect, first the Scouts circulated flyers all around town to let people know about the details of food drive itself. They explained what items were needed in particular by the food pantry. Then a few days after, the food was collected. Residents in Madison were asked to leave boxes or bags of groceries on their doorsteps. Last year the Boy Scout troop 25 collected more than 3,000 bags of groceries, and this year they hoped to surpass that total this year by collecting 3,500 bags of groceries.
hunger. Even in this area of New Jersey, the face of hunger might be shocking and surprising. The hungry are seniors and families; hard-working individuals and children; people who are familiar. At such a time it’s extremely important to remember that and do something to help, to turn hunger into hope. Recently, the members of Madison New Jersey Boy Scout Troop 25 did just that. On Sat., March 25, the Boy Scouts held their annual food drive called Scouting for Food. The members of the troop collected food for the Interfaith Food Pantry, helping the hungry. We were searching for a cause where they could donate food and found the then-just established Interfaith Food Pantry.” The Interfaith Food Pantry was established in 1994. Several houses of worship wanted to address the issue of hunger, to aid residents in Morris County, and consolidate their various food assistance programs. The Food Pantry realized that many people, families and senior citizens needed food for longer than was currently offered previously. They also realized that that the food pantry had to be in a centralized location, since many of those in need, including continued on page 9

It’s a great way to make kids aware about hunger in our communities.” She asserts that drives like this will not only educate the kids, but will actively involve them. “It’s a great way to make them feel empowered.” Gilmartin says. “It gets them brainstorming. It will get their wheels turning, and they’ll learn and think, ‘I can make a difference.’” Scouting for Food is a cause close to Gilmartin’s heart. In fact, it’s because of the Boy Scout program how she became involved with the Interfaith Food Pantry itself. “Years ago,” she shares, “My son used to be involved with the Boy Scouts

Hunger Into Hope... continued from page 8 older people, did not have transportation. The Interfaith Food Pantry is a non-profit, non-denominational organization. And has many various programs to help the hungry. As such they never turn anyone away. In talking to Gilmartin, it is easy to see her passion for her work and helping others. She is knowledgeable, realistic and yet positive, on the subject of hunger in our communities. “Hunger is such a huge problem,” she says. “It can seem insurmountable, but working together as a unit, it is doable. Everyone can learn that they can make a huge difference if they work together.” She has nothing but effusive praise for her co-workers and the folks at the Interfaith Food Pantry, for the staff, for the 300 Volunteer Staff Members, for the many organizations and for the communities that donate. “It takes a lot of people to pull this off,” Gilmartin says. “This is about neighbors helping neighbors. No one does this alone. People
want to help, they want to be engaged.” The mission statement of the food pantry is three fold. First to improve the health and well-being of Morris County residents by providing food nutritional information and other resources, to provide hands-on-opportunities for neighbors to help neighbors and educate the public about hunger in our area. The folks from the Interfaith Food Pantry are tireless in their quest to help. Just recently they are stepping up their game, joining with surrounding smaller food pantries, with their Mobile Pantry. This is
a refrigerated van to bring fruits, vegetables and much needed produce to people to keep healthy. The food pantry always needs some everyday items, so it is easy for people at large to contribute as well. The next time a trip to the supermarket beckons, keep these items in mind when grocery shopping. Check out the website and the list at www.mcifp. org. The Food Pantry is located at 2 Executive Drive in Morris Plains, N.J. 07950. So turn hunger into hope. With many hands, this can be done!

April Begins Garage Story Sunday Talks At Thomas Edison’s Glenmont Estate
S
by Michele Guttenberger pecial ranger-led talks of Thomas Edison’s Glenmont garage begin every Sunday, every two weeks, through June 25. If wondering if Thomas Edison saw the future in electric cars, questions will be quickly answered with a visit to this famous West Orange inventor’s personal garage. Many Tesla car aficionados make the pilgrimage to the first electric charging station garage. Al’s Garage, his childhood nickname, is the steampunk time capsule of the electric car’s future for American suburban living. It is story telling of interesting developments conceived in this garage that journeys from car bat-
teries to Edison’s poured concrete dream homes. Like many successful businessmen, Edison’s own domestic domain was his garage. He built it in 1908. It was a fixture that he designed and he oversaw the construction himself. Edison’s garage was his own unique creation, because it was the prototype for his new cement construction venture. This home project helped him master the technique of constructing mass-produced, poured-cement houses using iron molds. His garage and the original Yankee stadium came from the same cement poured by his own Edison Portland Cement. Today’s news is about battery operated cars and
providing a charging station for them. Edison already had this technology over some 100 years ago, in his own garage. He owned electric cars that used Edison batteries. Edison invented the alkaline storage battery in 1901 and spent years perfecting it for use in automobiles. The garage was the place to service these cars. Edison also had a gasoline filling pump in his garage for his 1922 Model T Ford – a gift from his good friend Henry Ford. The most interesting feature of Edison’s garage is the turntable to help park these vehicles. A car could rest on the concrete turntable and a hand crank rotated it to a desired parking
position. The driver never had to struggle backing the car into a spot, the turntable did the navigating. Few residential garages today can boast having this feature. Spend a Sunday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.,
or 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. learning about Thomas Edison’s poured concrete garage. There is no additional cost to visit the garage apart from the regular NPS entrance fee. To view the awesome collection of Edison’s electric and gas powered
cars a Car Pass is required. They are obtained at the Edison Factory Lab visiting center in West Orange. Visit website for more calendar info at http://www. nps.gov/edis/index.htm or call 973-736-0550 x11 for visiting information.
