Mendham Twp. Swears In New Police Chief
By Jason Cohen e grew up with a passion for helping people and giving back to his community. But, never in his wildest dreams did he imagine being a police chief at age 37.
On March 3, Ross Johnson was sworn in as the new police chief in Mendham Township. Johnson was made acting chief in April 2016 after former Chief Steven Crawford resigned.

A policeman for just 13 years, Johnson couldn’t be prouder of his success. “It’s incredibly rewarding,” said Johnson. “It’s a huge challenge, but one which I look forward to embracing. All things being equal, I didn’t quite expect to be chief.” Johnson was born and raised in Summit, but moved to Mendham when he was 16. A year later, he joined the Mendham Emergency Squad and Brookside Fire Department. He was active in the EMS for a decade and was a fireman for 17 years. He put his fireman dreams on hold and attended Gettysburg College. After graduating in 2001, he joined the corporate world and sold insurance for a few years. However, he quickly knew this was not for him. “When I started doing it, [firefighting], I fell in love with it,” Johnson remarked. So, he began to apply
for fireman jobs and during that process became a dispatcher in Warren County. This slowly peaked his interest in becoming a policeman. His heart was now drawn to the men in blue. His first choice was to work in Mendham Township and things worked out his way. They selected him and he went through a rigorous six-month academy. “I got blessed because I got promoted in 2008 to sergeant and I got promoted to lieutenant again in 2014,” he said. Johnson told the “Mendham News” his transition from fireman to cop wasn’t difficult because both professions are about serving the community. While there was a learning curve at first, he feels his experience as a firefighter helped him. “I think anybody that does this job, whether a firefighter or policeman, it’s all about helping peo-
ple,” he stressed. The chief noted that Mendham may not have murders like Newark or Camden, but stuff does go on there. It has its share of drug incidents, burglaries and domestic violence calls.
Fortunately, he has never had to use his gun. “We’re not immune to bad people,” he said. “A lot more happens here than most people know.” One area of his job that he takes very seriously is continued on page 3

Dental Implants, Insurance and Payment
arely do patients come to me in need of dental implants without questions about costs, insurance, and payments. This issue of Dental Digest will hopefully shed some light on these issues. Insurance: • Dental insurance does not behave like medical insurance. Dental insurance has a maximum, meaning once your insurance company pays out that amount, they will not pay any more for that benefit period, typically a calendar year. Therefore, if your plan’s maximum is $1,500 and your expected treatment is $5,000, your responsibility will be $3,500. • Implant coverage: We are finding more and more policies cover den-
tal implants, but this is a very broad and general statement. When someone undergoes dental implant treatment, there are multiple services that are performed. Coverage for each service is what you need to know. Examples of these services may include: the implant itself, an abutment, a crown, extractions, and grafting. Also, remember the point made above: once the maximum is reached, the insurance company will not pay out any additional funds. • Pre-determinations: When you ask your dentist to find out what your plan covers, you are asking for a pre-determination. However, these documents serve very little purpose, except to find out if a procedure is covered under your plan. IT
IS NOT A GUARANTEE OF PAYMENT! Just because the document states it is a covered procedure does not mean that it will be paid. There are MANY limitations and exclusions that apply. BEWARE! Investment: • Dental implants should be thought of as an investment, not an expense. You are investing your time and financial resources into your health. Understanding this concept will help you get away from the restrictive nature of insurance and guide you towards other methods of affording dental implants. Payment: In my practice, we perform many dental implant procedures for our patients and the patients of other
dentists. We recognize the financial needs of people, and we offer many opportunities for people to be able to afford the treatments they need and desire: • Cash & Check Discounts: Many people have the funds for the services they are requesting, but like all smart consumers, they look for discounts. We will offer those discounts for payments made my cash & check. • Home Equity Lines Of Credit: If you own your own home, and with interest rates so low, this is the cheapest money you can borrow. You pay yourself back as you see fit, with no (to little) penalties. • Healthcare Financing Companies: There are multiple companies that will
lend money for your healthcare needs. Some examples are CareCredit, Lending Club, and Health Credit Services. Plans offered by these companies range from interest-free loans to extended loans at higher interest rates. In summary, whether your needs are a single implant or complex care such as All-On-Four®, insurance, financing, and your thought process are all important considerations. We help our patients every day with these considerations here at Morris County Dental Associates. With the recent school shootings that have taken place throughout the country, the chief stressed it is imperative to have a good relationship with the schools. He noted that the department practices active shooter drills at the schools often. “Nobody’s immune to it and you just have to be prepared for it,” Johnson said. As he looks ahead to his
future, he said there isn’t a place he would rather be working. Because it is a small town, he is recognized in and out of uniform. Being involved in the community is crucial to having a good police department, Johnson explained. “We try to put a name with the badge,” he said. “I think that makes us a little more approachable.”

hen shopping for auto loans, prospective car buyers should limit their loan shopping to a twoweek period. Many auto buyers now shop for auto loans separately from shopping for cars, first arranging financing via a bank, credit union or other lender, and then beginning their search for their next car or truck. While that can help buyers secure low interest rates and borrower-friendly loan terms, buyers should
know that each time they apply for loans their credit scores dip. The lower a prospective borrower’s credit score, the harder it becomes for that person to secure the best loan rate. However, according to the online financial resource Bankrate.com, applicants who can file all of their loan applications within a twoweek period will only have those applications count as one credit inquiry. That means applicants’ credit scores will only fall once
as opposed to several times for prospective buyers who apply for loans sporadically over the course of several weeks or months. Potential borrowers also should know that once they have prequalified for loans and found a car or truck they want to buy, they can then present their loans terms to the dealership and ask if the dealer can beat the terms, potentially saving them more money over the life of the loan.

Local Hero’s Mission In Nepal Expands With Larger School And Movie Down The Road
By Cheryl Conway ith a decade gone by since her quest began to support poverty-stricken children in Nepal, Maggie Doyne of Mendham Borough recognizes the changes and growth, and continues on her mission to improve the lives of her family. In 2008, Doyne co-founded the BlinkNow Foundation with the building of the Kopila Valley Children’s Home and School in Surkhet, Nepal, as well as a health clinic and women’s center. With the development of a new campus that is larger and sustainable, as well as a movie in the works, one can only applaud Doyne for all of her hard work and passion to help people across the globe. “This year we are celebrating our 10 year anniversary!” says Doyne, whose journey began after backpacking with a dozen other students to the South Pacific Islands through a college-affiliated semester abroad program. It was on that trip that Doyne learned
first-hand that there are millions of children around the world that are starving for even the basic necessities for survival. That was when Doyne called home and asked her parents to wire her $5,000 life savings, mostly from babysitting. “Over the next two years, the dream of building a safe, clean, stable home became a reality,” as described on the BlinkNow website. Doyne purchased land in Surkhet, Nepal, with her $5,000, and the home’s foundation was soon poured thanks to the support of the local Nepalese community – led by BlinkNow Co-Founder Top Bahadur Malla, and supporters from Doyne’s hometown of Mendham and others around the world. In 2008, the front door of Kopila Valley Children’s Home opened. Providing a stable environment for kids of all ages. “It’s amazing how much has happened in the past 10 years and it’s incredible to see how much our organization and community have
grown, not to mention how much my children have grown,” says Doyne. She explains, “This year is a big year for us in many ways. We are continuing to develop the sustainable campus of our dreams, the oldest children in the home are transitioning into adulthood - living on their own, attending nursing school, pursing college educations - one is even moving to New Jersey to attend college! There’s a lot going on, many things are changing and also, many things are staying the same. We are still educating children in Nepal, empowering women through our women’s center and providing a loving and caring home for 49 children.” Building a larger school, one that is sustainable, is currently on the horizon for Doyne’s foundation. “For the past two years we have been building a green school up the road from the existing campus,” she explains. “When we opened the current school we built the campus on leased property and, since then, we’ve purchased

Filmmaker Jeremy Power Regimbal is working on a film “to tell my story in the hopes of spreading a message to the world about the power of love and its ability to heal,” says Doyne. “The goal of the film is to inspire people around the world to love more.” A kickstarter campaign was held from Feb. 8 through March 14, meeting its $150,000 goal. “We were all really

CASA Of Morris And Sussex Plans Anniversary Casino Night Event
he trustees, staff and volunteers of the Court Appointed Advocates of Morris and Sussex Counties are celebrating the organization’s 30th anniversary with a Casino Night. The event is scheduled to take place April 27 at The Park Savoy, East Hanover. The funds raised from the Casino Night will be used to train community volunteers to become advocates and mentors for children who desperately need champions. CASA of Morris and Sussex Counties is part of a statewide network of community-based, non-profit programs that recruit, screen, train and supervise volunteers to “Speak Up
for a Child.” These children have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. CASA is the only program in New Jersey that uses trained volunteers to work one-on-one with children, ensuring that each one gets the services needed and achieves permanency in a safe, nurturing home. Through the hard work of over 1,400 past and current CASA volunteers, the lives of 5,500 children, who were victims of abuse and neglect, have been forever changed. Each year in Morris and Sussex Counties, more than 400 children are living in foster homes or residential centers due to abuse and neglect they suffered in
their familial home. The troubling family circumstances that brought these children into the child-welfare system included parental addictions. It has been estimated that 70 percent to 80 percent of substantiated child maltreatment cases statewide involve parental substance abuse. Staff members and volunteers are asking the community to attend this event, make a donation to CASA of Morris and Sussex Counties, or become a CASA volunteer advocate. For more information about Casino Night please visit: http://bit.ly/casacasinonight. Visit casamsc.org or call 973-998-7590 for more information.

NCJW Hosts Author Of A Holocaust Survivor’s Story Of Survival
be Peck is the only living Holocaust survivor of an entire town in Poland. He is the only person left in this world who can provide a firsthand account of the atrocities committed by the Nazis against his family, friends and contemporaries. Maya Ross, the author of “Abe-vs-Adolf: The True Story of Holocaust Survivor Abe Peck,” will recount his astonishing story of survival at the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), West Morris Section’s Personal Giving Thank-You Brunch on Sun., April 30, beginning at 10 a.m., at a private home in Denville. The event is open to everyone who makes a do-
nation to the NCJW, West Morris Section’s Personal Giving campaign. Donations may be made by contacting Dorothy Cohen at dorothy_irvingcohen@ msn.com. Personal Giving is coordinated by Dorothy Cohen of Denville and Anne Gorman of Rockaway. Before Nazi Germany targeted European Jews for persecution and then ultimately annihilation in its insidious plan called the Final Solution of the Jewish Question, Peck had a wonderful childhood. But in March 1940, at only 15 years old, Peck was snatched from his home and family and forced to spend the next five unimaginably horrific years
Fully Insured Free Estimates
as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Robbed of his teenage years, with no parents to guide or care for him, Abe somehow survived starvation, disease, beatings, shootings, forced labor, death marches and prolonged imprisonment. If asked how he did it, how he defied death by beating the most abysmal of odds, he will simply say that he was lucky. But was it luck, or was it an indomitable will to live? By detailing his firsthand experience of the horrors of discrimination and genocide, through Ross’s book, he fervently hopes that subsequent generations will learn from the past and vow, “Never again.” Ross is a fiction writer
who met Holocaust survivor Peck while serving on the board of a not-for-profit philanthropic organization. She was so fascinated by his tale of courage and survival that she set out to write his true life story. Her talk at the NCJW, West Morris Section’s Personal Giving Thank-you Brunch promises to be eminently memorable. The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Patriots 5K Race To Raise Funds For Ralston Playground Renovation
By Sarah Schnurr he Mendham Recreation Commission plans to host the ninth Annual Patriots 5K Race and Kids’ Fun Run on June 17 to raise money for the renovation of the Ralston Playground. The charity race, which is open to runners of all ages and abilities, is set to begin at 9 a.m. at the Brookside Community Club. In addition to the race, participants can enjoy family-friendly activities, a vendor fair, refreshments, a live DJ, and door prizes. Interested participants can register for the race at www.practicehard.com. Discounted, early-bird registration will be available through midnight on June 15. Registered racers will receive a customized teeshirt and the opportunity to earn 500 Grand Prix points on the USATF-certified course, which will wind through the historic streets of Brookside. Medals will be awarded for overall performance and in age groups. In the past, funds raised from the 5K race were donated to Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Brookside Beach and a campaign to purchase AED units for local parks. The race also supports local graduating seniors committed to community service through the Veronica O’Neil and Patriots scholarships. This year, a majority of the proceeds will be donated to the Rebuild the Ralston Playground campaign, which hopes to raise $200,000 for the project. Ralston Playground was permanently closed
last spring after 14 years of operation. Recognized in 2002 as a “NJ Recreational Parks Association for Excellence in Design” award winner, the park’s wooden design is based on the farming history of Mendham Township, with mill- and barn-inspired play equipment. The park also boasts a large field and picnic areas, where many local families and children gather. Due to damage from Hurricane Sandy and subsequent storms, the playground was closed temporarily in 2014, and permanently in 2016 after failing a safety inspection. “I think the playground is really critical to our community,” said Recreation Commissioner Amalia Duarte. “This is Mendham Township’s only playground. It’s in a central location where people from the township, the borough, and neighboring communities can come to play and gather—it really is the premier playground in this area.” While the designs for the playground have not yet been drawn up, Recreation Director Peter Wright helped the township estimate the project’s budget. “We immediately got the campaign going, but
at the same time, we have been talking to the members of the public and the Junior Women’s Club, and we’ll have them get involved with the design of the playground over the next few months,” said Duarte. The Recreation Committee just completed a mailing to all residents of Mendham Township, which outlined how community members can donate to the cause. In addition to hosting the race, the Recreation Commission has partnered with the West Morris Junior Women’s Club to establish a “BuyA-Brick” campaign. For more information, visit www.wmjwc.org. “There are more and more younger families moving into town, and they deserve to have a place to take their kids, and to go meet and make new friends,” said Duarte. Additional fundraisers for the playground are being planned for the upcoming months, and community cooperation has been high. “People are just rallying around this—they want to know what they can do, how they can help. It’s a really wonderful cause,” said Duarte.

Luck O’ The Farm At Fosterfields Living Historical Farm
uring the 19th century, Irish flocked to the United States and embarked on a new life. The American landscape became a melting pot of diverse cultures that immigrated to this country. Many Irish settled in the Morristown area and worked at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm. On Sat., April 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. visit Fosterfields Living Historical Farm in Morris Township to learn about Irish culture through dance, crafts, folklore, music and farm activities. Help with hands-on farm chores like churning
cream into butter, stacking firewood, weighing eggs, and planting seeds in flats. Hop aboard an open-air wagon ride around to tour the farm. Follow the delicious smells to the kitchen of the Farmhouse, and discover what traditional Irish foods are being prepared in the wood-burning cook stove. Take a peek and watch how an Aran sweater is knitted in the parlor. Also visit the mansion, The Willows. Lend a hand with domestic spring chores by washing laundry, beating rugs, dusting and polishing silver. Take a break from
household chores and enjoy traditional Irish music performed live by Linda Russell. Mark Sutherland, manager of Historic Sites, stated “At Luck O’ the Farm, visitors will meet re-enactors who are playing the roles of actual Irish immigrants who worked at Fosterfields. ‘Mrs. Cahill,’ the farmer’s wife, and ‘Andrew Gibbons,’ the coachman will be sharing their stories and welcoming questions about their journey to America and employment at the Farm.”. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors 64 and older, $6 for children
ages 4 - 16, and $4 for children ages 2 and 3, free for children under age 2. Friends members are half price with a current membership card. For more information and directions to Fosterfields Living Historical Farm in Morris Township, visit, morrisparks.net, or call 973-326-7645. The Morris County Park Commission features one of the region’s best park systems in the state of New Jersey. It currently protects and maintains 18,927 acres at 38 distinct sites plus offers a year-round calendar of events and activities for all to enjoy!

April Begins Garage Story Sunday Talks At Thomas Edison’s Glenmont Estate
S
by Michele Guttenberger pecial ranger-led talks of Thomas Edison’s Glenmont garage begin every Sunday, every two weeks, through June 25. If wondering if Thomas Edison saw the future in electric cars, questions will be quickly answered with a visit to this famous West Orange inventor’s personal garage. Many Tesla car aficionados make the pilgrimage to the first electric charging station garage. Al’s Garage, his childhood nickname, is the steampunk time capsule of the electric car’s future for American suburban living. It is story telling of interesting developments conceived in this garage that journeys from car bat-
teries to Edison’s poured concrete dream homes. Like many successful businessmen, Edison’s own domestic domain was his garage. He built it in 1908. It was a fixture that he designed and he oversaw the construction himself. Edison’s garage was his own unique creation, because it was the prototype for his new cement construction venture. This home project helped him master the technique of constructing mass-produced, poured-cement houses using iron molds. His garage and the original Yankee stadium came from the same cement poured by his own Edison Portland Cement. Today’s news is about battery operated cars and
providing a charging station for them. Edison already had this technology over some 100 years ago, in his own garage. He owned electric cars that used Edison batteries. Edison invented the alkaline storage battery in 1901 and spent years perfecting it for use in automobiles. The garage was the place to service these cars. Edison also had a gasoline filling pump in his garage for his 1922 Model T Ford – a gift from his good friend Henry Ford. The most interesting feature of Edison’s garage is the turntable to help park these vehicles. A car could rest on the concrete turntable and a hand crank rotated it to a desired parking
position. The driver never had to struggle backing the car into a spot, the turntable did the navigating. Few residential garages today can boast having this feature. Spend a Sunday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.,
or 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. learning about Thomas Edison’s poured concrete garage. There is no additional cost to visit the garage apart from the regular NPS entrance fee. To view the awesome collection of Edison’s electric and gas powered
cars a Car Pass is required. They are obtained at the Edison Factory Lab visiting center in West Orange. Visit website for more calendar info at http://www. nps.gov/edis/index.htm or call 973-736-0550 x11 for visiting information.
