Mendham Borough Looks To Improve Economy With New Committee
T
By Jason Cohen he Mendham Borough Council recently established the Mayoral Ad Hoc Committee on Economic Development with a goal of improving the economy in the community. Appointed as chair of this newly formed group is Councilwoman Christine Glassner. On the council for just under a year, Glassner has an extensive background in small business development and currently does consulting for small businesses throughout the state. The group was created in November and has met once so far. Her experience in business includes working for the Empire State Development Corporation for a decade and being the regional advocate for Region 2 for the Small Business Administration from 2006 to 2009. The Empire State Development Corporation is the umbrella organization for New York’s two principal economic development public-benefit corporations, the New York State Urban Development Corporation and the Job Development Authority. The goal of the committee is to see
what it can do to improve businesses and bring new ones into town. “Mendham’s not a town that’s going to grow,” Glassner said. “We’re pretty much developed out.” Glassner explained the committee’s primary goal is to focus on things it can control. A town or borough can control ordinances and what businesses it allows to operate, however it’s up to the businesses as to how successful it will be. According to Glassner, besides dealing with high rents and property taxes, a successful business must do its homework. A businessman or woman must research the area, find out if their product will sell, look at startup costs, if there are stores like theirs and ultimately determine if they can or can’t succeed. She said she has seen countless small businesses fail because they simply don’t do their homework. Glassner stressed that because Mendham is small, a big box store or franchise isn’t feasible. “A little town like Mendham isn’t going to do a lot to support a franchise store,”

she said. “We don’t have the volume. One could open here, but will it be successful?” She said the committee wants viable businesses that can remain in the community for a long time. In fact, recently a tutoring centering closed and many people were angry becontinued on page 2
Mendham Minutemen Boys’ Soccer Score State Championship
S
By Josh Lashley o many positive terms can be used to describe the journey undertaken by the Mendham High School boys’ soccer program during the 2017 season. The team displayed adaptability, competitiveness, desire, energy, fierceness, inspiration, maturity, resilience, sportsmanship and tenacity. To boil it all down to one word, the Minutemen can be called champions. They won the NJSIAA Group 3 State Championship with a 2-1 victory over Mainland on Nov. 19 at Kean University in Union. In the
State Group 3 semifinal round, they defeated Old Tappan, 1-0. Calvin Ryan scored both goals in the win against Mainland. In the triumph over Old Tappan, Hans Gallagher tallied the winning goal on an assist from James Worth. Ryan Carkhuff was the shutout winner in goal for Mendham. Mendham won the North 2 Group 3 Sectional title with a 2-1 triumph over Hopewell Valley. Gallagher had both goals in that contest. Russ Raffay, the head coach for the Minutemen, recalls some vital moments on
the pitch this fall. “The Delbarton matches (on September 26, October 21 and October 27) gave the team confidence,’’ Raffay said. “To play them tight in the County final was a turning point for our State run. The Morris Knolls semifinal game (a 4-0 Morris County Tournament win) in October let us know we could compete against quality public school teams. “The first Montville game, our only overtime game (3-2 win on September 18), showed that we could deal with adversity continued on page 2
