Community Gardens Open Their Gates To The Public

W

By Catherine Bialkowski and Jessica Jones hat better way to spend a weekend than at a local garden, tasting freshly-picked fruits and vegetables and bonding over the sense of community? The Morris County Park Commission and the Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum planned to host a free Open Gates Weekend on July 15 and 16 to demonstrate the beauty of the county’s greenery and let guests of all ages engage with nature and with each other. This is Open Gates

Weekend’s second year. Participating this year are the Morris County Park Commission Community Garden, Interfaith Food Pantry Garden, Early Street Community Garden, Morris Township Ted Largman Community Garden at ValleVue Preserve, Madison Community Garden, Washington Township Community Garden, the community garden at South Branch Preserve, Roxbury Community Garden, Pequannock Township Community Garden and Florham Park Community Garden. According to Cynthia Triolo, manager at the

commission’s own community garden, last year’s event saw great success, with more than 200 people in attendance, despite the “terrible weather.” “It was unanimous among the participating gardens that we should make it an annual event,” she said. “Visitors were amazed at what was growing in the gardens and also by how beautiful they were.” The showcase would not be complete without an array of free samples taken directly from the gardens themselves. “One of the gardens did a potluck, one did a salsa tasting, one did a tomato tasting,” Triolo said, referring to last year’s Open Gates. “Others gave away seedlings of chard and kale; others gave seeds; one had music. Every garden offered something different.” This year, visitors expected similar giveaways. The commission’s decision to host this event was based on a passion for not only gardening, but on fostering a sense of community and a healthy lifestyle. “Community gardens are important for many reasons,” Triolo said, listing the benefits. “They bring a sense of community to their location. They promote healthy food. They

lower our carbon footprint. They also foster bonds of friendship and support. Children learn where their food comes from and what it takes to grow your own. They also create a green space that filters rainwater and restores oxygen to the air.” Barbara McCloskey, the garden manager at the South Branch Preserve Community Garden, gave an example of the sense of community at her garden, saying that the picnic tables seem to be the most popular part because they allow the gardeners to get some shade and talk to one another. Community gardens allow freedom to experiment when growing different vegetables. They give gardeners access to seeing

firsthand where their food is grown and to know that it comes from a safe, familiar place. “There is nothing like the taste of totally fresh, organically grown vegetables,” said McCloskey. “Since you pick out your seeds or plants, you also have the opportunity to grow different varieties of vegetables that are not usually found in the supermarkets.” Additionally, each of the community gardens donates a portion of what’s grown there to a local food pantry. “Many have garden plots that are dedicated to giving, and wonderful volunteers who tend the plots and deliver the produce,” said Triolo. “In the past two years, the Morris

County Park Commission’s community garden donated over 4,000 pounds of produce.” The South Branch Preserve Community Garden was able to donate 740 pounds of produce last year. Every week during the summer they set up coolers where gardeners are able to donate their excess vegetables, herbs and even fresh flowers. Community gardens are perfect for those who have a green thumb but have nowhere to use it. “The residents are thrilled to have a place to plant, as many either live in apartments, have too much shade or there are too many animals in their yards to be able to properly grow vegetables,” said McCloskey. continued on page 2

Local Non-Profit Reaches Above The Rim In Fundraising

I

n its third year of operation, Layups 4 Life raises an all-time high in its fundraising this past season. June 14 marked the end of the 2017 fundraising season for Layups 4 Life. The $23,641 raised increases Layups 4 Life’s grand fundraising total to more than $50,000. During the last two years, the non-profit organization has donated

to Leukemia, Pediatric and Bone Marrow research departments within Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Last season, Layups 4 Life made a major contribution of $10,000 to help fund Dr. Bart Getta, a fellow at MSKCC, conducting research on leukemia cells that linger after a patient receives a stem cell transplant.

Currently, co-founders Dan Exter and Dana Levine are selecting which departments they will be allocating the funds raised from this past season. For additional information about Layups 4 Life and future events reach out to Dan Exter at layups4life@gmail.com or www. layups4life.org. Making a difference, one layup at a time!

Community Gardens Open Their Gates... continued from front page

Sal Internicola, who has a plot at South Branch Preserve, calls gardening “a lot of work, but fun.” His own garden at home, he said, doesn’t get enough sunlight. A community garden nearby- filled with tomatoes, beets, peas, lettuce, and various herbs - was the perfect solution. “It’s relaxing, and I’ve learned a lot from the other gardeners.” The same goes for Dick Spaedt, another gardener at South Branch. “I heard about it in the newspaper a few years ago,” Spaedt said. “I’ve

been here since day one.” Day one, for the South Branch Preserve, took place in 2013. The community garden is in its fifth year of business - and has nearly doubled in size since the beginning. “We have potluck dinners and a seed exchange; a few times, master gardeners came from Rutgers to talk to us,” Spaedt said, offering a look into the activities that come with being a community gardener. There are countless opportunities for those who want to get involved. And these events

do not only take place at South Branch - each of the gardens has offerings of its own, to enhance skills and encourage social interaction. Whether someone is a master gardener looking for a place to hone their craft or a novice looking for a place to grow their own produce, a community garden could become a new home. With a prominent sense of community and growth (literally and figuratively), a community garden can foster creativity, awareness and a love for the earth.

Donations Lost, Thrift Store Aborted- SOS Appeals For Financial Support And Volunteers

A

By Cheryl Conway vacated plan to open a second thrift store may have dimmed its hope for a brighter future, but the battered women’s shelter organization still hangs on to survive. Strengthen Our Sisters (SOS), a non-profit program serving homeless/battered women and children for more than four decades, had planned to open up a second thrift store in Passaic as early as January this past year. The store, Treasures Two, was going to feature furniture and clothing sales, with proceeds to cover the mortgage and utility costs incurred in

operating a seven-facility shelter. Plans to open the store at 919 Main Ave. in Passaic were stalled when the landlord was told he needed to provide a fire suppression system. In the meantime SOS was paying for storage space for months to house furniture and clothing received from generous donators. When the date to open the store was pushed to March, then April, SOS decided it could not wait any longer for the space to be available as they were losing too much money to rent the storage space. “That store won’t be ready for months,” says

Sandra Ramos of Ringwood, founder and executive director of SOS. Edee Galzan, volunteer administrative director of SOS says “SOS was losing money in storage and we couldn’t afford it.” To make matters worse, when SOS announced it had to pull out, the store’s landlord did not refund SOS all of its money owed to them. “He didn’t give us back all our money,” says Ramos. “He owes us $4,000. We paid three and a half months rent, security deposit.” When SOS stopped paying the rent for the storage space, it soon lost all of its

beautiful donations, says Ramos. “It’s a gimmick,” says Ramos. The monthly storage rent had increased from $30 to $300. “We got really nice stuff,” and now it is gone. “Wonderful merchandise over $7,000,” says Galzan. “We lost it. We had to let it go. We signed something; if you are not able to pay, they are allowed to sell it.” With one step forward and two steps back, SOS continues its appeal for monetary donations, volunteers and necessary items to keep the shelters open. With restricted monies coming in, the organiza-

tion has been in jeopardy of closing its doors to hundreds of women and children. Established in 1977 as Shelter Our Sisters – Ramos began the first shelter for battered women in North America out of her three bedroom home in Hackensack as early as 1970. The organization changed its name to Strengthen Our Sisters and grew as big as eight houses, two day care centers, a food pantry and a thrift store. The mission of SOS is to break the cycle of domestic violence, poverty and abuse by restoring balance and harmony through individual empowerment.

To support her organization, Ramos receives limited money from sources such as the Passaic County Dept. of Human Services and private donations. Ramos currently has 17 nonpaid volunteers who drive shelter residents to look for jobs and attend court, doctor appointments, social services, schools; and run the thrift store and day care centers. SOS is currently down to seven facilities located in Newfoundland, Wanaque and West Milford, providing shelter to 150 women and children, with more calling every day. SOS Appeals For Financial Support continued from page 3 support and understanding lenders has paved the way toward SOS’s shaky survival. One Livingston business person- who had given SOS $35,000 to support the second thrift store and help pay for the shelter’s utility fees- issued another $9,000 to SOS for its troubles. Ramos also managed to get the shelter’s mortgage reduced from $800K to $499K. “Edee’s very organized; we are paying all our bills and trying to hold on,” says Ramos. “She’s organizing the one store.”

“We do have a truck now,” says Ramos, to pick up donations. Money is needed for storage of any furniture donations, as well as money for gas to put in the truck. Ramos had been counting on $30,000 from a United Way grant but that was denied when SOS didn’t have its audit completed in time, she says. “Keeping seven shelters running is no joke,” says Ramos. SOS is $73,000 behind in the monies owed to PSEG and operating costs. Losing the second thrift store, “This really set us back.

ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNERS

“We are still accruing bills,” says Ramos. “They are allowing us to stay open; they see we are making an effort. They could have cut us off a long time ago.” While donations are appreciated, Galzan says SOS needs to reorganize its one thrift store for more space before accepting any furniture or large items. Financial donations to help pay for the mortgage and utilities is SOS’s greatest need, as well as volunteers to drive the residents to appointments, work at the store and shelters and landscape the properties.

Other immediate items include large black contractor garbage bags, toilet paper, cleaning products, non-perishable food, fresh fruits and vegetables, beds, a power lawn mower and weed whacker. Donations can be sent

to P.O. Box 1089, Hewitt, N.J., 07421; or call 973831-6156. Those willing to donate can also go to gofundme.com/strengthenoursisters. Another option is to visit SOS’s thrift store, Treasures, at 196 Lincoln Ave.,

West Milford. In existence for 30 years, Treasures is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call the store at 862-248-9935 for more information. For more information on SOS go to www.strengthenoursisters.org.

Morris Freeholders To Visit Mendham, Hanover As Part Of Road Tour

he Morris County Board of Freeholders has added Mendham and Hanover to its 2017 “road meetings’’ schedule, passing a resolution to hold upcoming county government meetings in Hanover and Mendham Borough, as well as other towns. Moving freeholder board meetings out of the county seat in Morristown to the county’s 39 municipalities is part of the board’s continuing effort to bring county government closer to their constituents. The county government road meetings for the rest of 2017, all to be held in town halls and starting at 7 p.m., include July 26, Kinnelon Borough; Sept. 27., Mendham Borough; Oct.

25, Hanover Township. Residents and officials from each of those towns, and from all towns in Morris County, are invited to the Wednesday night freeholder meetings and are encouraged to raise issues and ask questions about local, county and regional issues. The agendas for freeholder meetings are posted online at https:// morriscountynj.gov/ freeholders/publicmeetings-about/. The freeholders voted earlier this year to continue their tradition of holding some of their county government meetings at towns halls away from the county government headquarters in Morristown. So far this year, the board has met in Chester Borough, Morris

Plains and East Hanover. “It is important to meet county residents where they live and work, and to make it more convenient for residents and elected

officials to have access to county government without having to come to Morristown,’’ said Freeholder Director Doug Cabana. “The road meetings give

local residents and officials an opportunity to raise regional issues of concern to the freeholders, so we can better understand and focus on these issues,’’ said Dep-

More Than A Century Later, Electric Cars Come Full Circle At Thomas Edison National Park

By Jennifer Walkup brand new electric car charging station opened at Thomas Edison National Park in West Orange on April 19. More than a century after inventor Thomas Edison parked his own 1914 Detroit Electric car at his factory on Main Street, a new technological innovation was implemented with the installation of this electric car charging station. This project was made possible by a partnership between the National Park Service, the National Park Foundation, the US Energy Department and BMW. One hundred electric charging stations will be

installed in national parks throughout the country. “The partnership between The National Park Service, National Park Foundation, BMW, and the Department of Energy made this possible,” said Thomas Ross, National Park Service superintendent. “This will allow electric cars to travel to and around national parks.” The partnership aims to get more electric vehicles into national parks, rather than relegating electric vehicles to urban areas where charge stations are more easily accessible. This project fosters electric vehicle travel and will raise awareness about electric vehicle technology

and plug-in electric vehicles for millions of park visitors. This project will reduce air pollution in national parks and gateway communities. “We are interested in supporting both electric cars as well as having a positive impact on the environment,” said Ross. “Having the charging stations in the parks will support that. Some parks are many miles of roadways. At this time, we do not have the infrastructure to support electric vehicles in those places. This will change that.” The electric vehicle charging station in West Orange is located in the laboratory complex’s vis-

itor parking area. The program’s first charging station installation was chosen for the Thomas Ed-

ison National Park because of Edison’s inventive nature and his work with electric cars.

“We were proud to launch the national program here in West Orange,” continued on page 12

Electric Cars Come Full Circle... continued from page 10 said Ross. “We have two level-two charging stations at the laboratory complex on Main Street. There is a great historical connection. Thomas Edison was very interested in electric cars. It really has come full circle.” In the mid-1890s, Edison worked on an electric storage battery for use in electric cars. The park has three of his electric cars in its collection, two Detroit electric vehicles from 1913 and a loco mobile from 1905 which was converted from steam to electric. At Glenmont, Edison’s home, which is also open to visitors, Edison’s own original car charging station resides in the garage. This

charging station was built by Edison in 1904. “We want to offer the charging station to visitors of the park but also to our community in West Orange,” said Ross. “We worked closely with the town and with the West Orange environmental committee as well.” Most stations are two to three miles away in Montclair and near Turtleback Zoo. This new charging station is right in the center of town on Main Street and also near route 280. Courtesy of BMW, the charging station at the Thomas Edison site will operate for free for the first six months. The program will continue to add electric car

charging stations throughout national parks during the next two years. They will determine where to install the charging stations based on the strength and proximity of local electric car markets, the location of other nearby charging stations, as well as various considerations regarding the landscape of the parks. This partnership supports the National Park Foundation’s Centennial Campaign for America’s National Parks which aims to strengthen and enhance the future of America’s natural, historical and cultural treasures for the next 100 years. The mission aspires to do so by protecting America’s treasured places, connecting everyone

from all backgrounds with the country’s incomparable natural landscapes, rich history, vibrant culture, as well as inspiring lifelong relationships with national parks, and creating the next great generation of park visitors and stewards. The NPS is responsible for the stewardship of America’s natural treasures and historic sites. Innovation, entrepreneurship and technology are key parts of its mission and story. Modern transportation produces emissions that affect clear skies and scenic views and make it challenging for the NPS to fulfill its mission to preserve natural, historic, and cultural resources unim-

paired for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The NPS has more than 20,000 employees that care for America’s 417 national parks. The National Park Foundation is the charity and philanthropic arm of the NPS. This nonprofit foundation aims to protect the more than 84 million acres of national parks through conservation and preservation. The NPS has worked with The US Department of energy on this and other projects in support of the DOE’s Clean cities program by supporting local actions to reduce energy, emissions and petroleum

use in transportation. The benefits of these projects will be far reaching for the nation. Visitors of The Thomas Edison National Historical Park will be able to view the new charging station along with the large variety of other offerings at the park. The site preserves the last and largest of Edison’s laboratories, home of the perfected phonograph, motion pictures and the nickel-iron alkaline storage battery. The museum collection has more than 400,000 artifacts including Edison products, laboratory equipment, and personal belongings of the Edisons.

Balloon Festival Celebrates 35 Years Of Family Fun

T

he 35th annual QuickChek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning in Association with PNC Bank plans to celebrate its anniversary with its largest lineup of special shaped hot air balloons and its biggest concert series ever. The three-day Festival, July 28-30, at Solberg Airport in Readington, features the awe-inspiring spectacle of 100 sport and special shaped hot air balloons from around the world taking to the skies twice each day in mass ascensions over the scenic countryside. Four-time Grammy Award winner Pat Benatar heads the list of performers who will take the new Progressive Main Stage at the largest summertime hot air balloon and music festival

in North America. “Whether you come every year, you’ve been in here in the past or have never come out before, this is the year you should be here,” said Festival Executive Producer Howard Freeman. “We’re very proud to present our greatest lineup of special shaped balloons and our biggest concert lineup ever. There is something for everyone and we’re looking forward to launching the biggest party of the summer.” Perhaps no special shape balloon better represents the Festival than the QuickChek Farmhouse. Complete with a 61-foottall silo, 30-foot-tall farmer and friendly animals including a cow, a pig, a cat and chickens, this giant red barn fits in perfectly with the tranquil and rural Hunt-

erdon County setting and QuickChek’s mission of being fresh and local. There’s a lot of buzz with the “Little Bees” - a pair of 110-foot-tall bumblebees who hold hands and “kiss” in mid-flight! They’ll be joined by their 80-foot-tall baby bee. The festival will once again honor America with the five-story tall PNC American Flag balloon; created following 9/11, it is the world’s largest free-flying American flag and has become an annual crowd favorite. Other special shaped balloons include an 85-foot-tall lion, the 110-foot-tall Unique Photo panda, the 105-foot-tall Bimbo Bakeries bear, an 85-foot-tall Angry Bird, an 80-foot-tall Pepsi football, and a 67-foot-tall superhero

from Canada. And what’s an anniversary without a cake? The cake special shaped hot air balloon is 80 feet tall and weighs 807 pounds! Expect the biggest names in music, too, with five headlining concerts. Best-selling children’s recording artist Laurie Berkner performs Friday, July 28 at 1:30 p.m. with George Thorogood and the Destroyers playing Friday night at 8 p.m. followed by a fireworks display. Internet sensation Jake Miller performs Saturday, July 29 at 1 p.m. with Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo performing Saturday night at 8 p.m. in conjunction with the nighttime hot air balloon glow. The Plain White T’s perform Sunday, July 30 at

Bees photo courtesy of QuickChek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning.

3 p.m. The festival offers 39 hours of affordable family entertainment including fireworks; a nighttime balloon glow; the acrobatic AeroSphere Balloon Show from “America’s Got Talent;” children’s amusement rides and entertainment; exciting interactive exhibits and hundreds of crafters and food vendors.

More than 1,000 people will take a ride in a balloon at the festival. Tickets are available at all QuickChek stores; call 1-800-HOT-AIR9 or online at www.balloonfestival. com. Tickets are $20-$35 for adults; children $8-$15; ages 3 and under free; VIP: $60-$125; Military discount available.
