Mendham Man Looks To Support More Than Just Walls Through His Architecture Firm By Cheryl Conway
A
local man who founded an architecture-design firm has been recognized, in part, for his community
accomplishments provided through his company. George Kimmerle of Mendham takes pride in his company’s involvement in charitable efforts through-
out the area, especially time put in to working with non-profit groups. Kimmerle is the founder of the Kimmerle Group (KG), a multifaceted architectural/ design organization offering real estate planning and development services, with offices in Harding and New York City. In January, he was named 2016 “Firm of the Year” by the New Jersey Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA-NJ) The award, presented during AIA-NJ’s Annual Inauguration and Awards Gala, is based on professional, community and technical accomplishments, and recognizes a NJ-based firm that demonstrates exceptional service to the architecture profession. Receiving that recognition is a “great thing for the whole organization proving what we’ve been doing
over the years,” says Kimmerle. The firm donates countless hours to not-for-profit causes throughout the tristate area, and has been recognized for its long-term commitment to NJ-based non-profit agencies and organizations. “We make it a point to engage,” he adds, regarding his company’s community outreach. As a business, “every quarter we’re supposed to do something for someone.” He says, “We are a part of the community and our corporate credo says every quarter we should be doing something for a not for profit community organization. After 30 years, that’s 120 quarters, which includes our work for the disabled, seniors, crime victims, and a long list of health and senior care not-for-profits including hospitals – in addition to our work thru NYU

and Rutgers in community development and downtown planning.” Since the mid 1970’s helping out non-profits has been constant at KG. Out of his 35 employees, about one-third have been steady for a decade, he says, but there are newer professionals who grow from the experience. “This mission and message is great for them,” as they form their careers, he says. “This is what young professionals should try to
achieve.” His son, William of Hoboken, a graduate of Mendham High School, works as an architect and planner at his firms in the NY office. They were both members of the Brookside Fire Company some years ago. In recent years, the company has been growing/ expanding tremendously so most of Kimmerle’s charitable efforts are broader and on a corporate level, continued on page 2

Architecture Firm... continued from front page working with non-profits, for example. The company makes many thousands of dollars in charitable donations and offers seriously reduced rates to organizations devoted to senior care, assisted living, developmental disabilities and victim’s rights. Its design of Deirdre’s House in Morristown, a historic structure converted into a child advocacy center, has become a national model for facilities devoted to the care, treatment, support and advocacy for victims of crimes. KG ultimately designed the building which was established in 1994 and is used as the center in Morris County for child victims
of abuse and/or neglect and for children that have witnessed domestic violence. At this site, a child victim can be interviewed and digitally recorded by law enforcement, medically examined and treated by a pediatric abuse specialist, prepared for trial, and clinically counseled, all under one roof, according to the website. The building became “a national model” or “prototype” for other centers to be established, says Kimmerle. “We worked with Jim [O’Brien] on what a child center needed to do,” in providing a safe environment. “Not just the walls; it’s how the building operates” and how to shape it as
well. O’Brien, a former Morris County Freeholder, became an advocate for crime victims after his 25-year old daughter Deidre was raped and murdered by a serial killer in 1982. KG also designed the Morris County Food Pantry, a “simple assignment, layout a space to include shelving etc. Sometimes it’s just that simple,” he says. For the Literacy Volunteers of Morris County, KG got them free furniture from a client to furnish their offices, he adds. At the Morristown/Morris Twp. Teen Center, his company designed a new building for a site in Morristown for an after school
teen center. Their design of facilities for Spectrum for Living in Ringwood, which provides care and treatment for people with physical and mental disabilities, and Visiting Nurse Association headquarters in Basking Ridge has made a huge difference for those organizations and the individuals they serve. “It became the model for senior community living,” says Kimmerle, regarding the work they provided at the Visiting Nurse Association. “We take the use to another level to make sure it’s a complete model.” Kimmerle Group has been supporting Spectrum for 15 years, offering discount with every project and contributions to their
fundraising. Due to the property’s environmentally restricted NJ Highlands location, Spectrum initially anticipated a 3,200-square-foot facility. After working with the NJDEP and local officials, KG secured approvals for 10,500 square feet and ultimately transformed a historic barn into a stateof-the-art daycare/education setting with a distinctive multi-form, farmstead aesthetic. In a more recent project, the Kimmerle Group helped with the facility of the Learning Ally in Princeton for the hearing impaired for youth and adults. KG takes great pride in providing both financial support and services for
such organizations, many of which are human services, hospitals, seniors, assisted living. It has also engaged in various towns in community based activities and planning, says Kimmerle. One such project entailed a downtown study of Madison in terms of recreating its downtown in regarding to housing and services for adults, repositioning the theater, he says. “The study we did in Madison became part of their revived master plan,” says Kimmerle, to be used as a guideline. He also spoke recently as Kessler Institute in West Orange about handicap accessibility.

Mendham Teen Reaches Out To Children Through Music And Charity By Cheryl Conway
T
here is some beautiful harmony being shared in Mendham Twp. that is touching the ears and hearts both local and far in an effort to extend a hand to help others. It all started with a passion by 16-year old Deidre Thompson of Mendham Twp., a sophomore at Mendham High School. Just last Oct. 2016, Thompson founded Hand In Hand Voices, a non-profit organization that focuses on improving singing and improving the world. Thompson’s goal is to serve as teacher to not only help children become better singers but to show them how their efforts can help others.
“I want to use my passion to help the world,” Thompson explains on her organization’s website. “Children are the most sincere source of happiness. Children can do incredible things for the community and ultimately make the world a better place.” The purpose of her organization “is to raise money to make an impact on real people with real problems,” she notes. “We are also trying to spread the effect that music has on people, and teach it to children and our audiences. Our hope is that children can broaden their horizons and benefit from a new perspective from learning about cultures with problems bigger than our own.”
Thompson’s ideas for her organization developed through her life-long passion for music as a performer and more recently a teacher. “I’ve been performing all my life,” she says, specializing as soprano singer and pianist. At the age of five, she started performing in musical theater, introduced to her by her father’s involvement. In middle school, she joined the choir, and continued in high school. Her voice carried her as a selected member in the New Jersey Youth Choir for the past three years. She performed in the recent school musical, “Sweeney Todd,” in a supporting lead; is one of 11 members
of the all-girl a cappella group, the Treble Makers, at her school; and plans to perform in the Paper Mill Conservatory Musical Theater Showcase New Voices Concert this summer. With her father being
well versed in piano as well, Thompson learned piano with lessons since the fourth grade. Her parents also taught her the importance to give back, having done various fundraisers such as Relay
For Life. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in Aug. 2015 so giving back was even more prevalent. In the fall of 2016, Thompson was recruited cont. on next page

Music And Charity... cont. from previous page by some local moms to provide some voice lessons to their children who were auditioning for a musical. For about one week, Thompson taught three local kids in her neighborhood how to sing. Through her experience of providing these children voice lessons, Thompson’s idea for Hand In Hand Voices grew, she says. In January, she started her first session of six 90-minute classes for kids ages eight through 12. Held Jan. 9 to Feb. 13 at the Hilltop House in Mendham, 10 boys and girls from Mendham, Randolph and Basking Ridge signed up. With her mom as the chaperone, Thompson served as teacher. She taught the students the ele-

ments of music focusing on pitches and rhythm, basic melodies in song to prepare for their concert. She educated the students about the target charity; and prepared them for the fundraising event at the culmination of the program. “Anyone who wanted to sign up could,” explains Thompson. “I tried to help them the best I could. The main concern was being able to follow along, We had some pretty strong singers. Most had fun with it and were able to learn what they could.” At the end of the winter session, she organized a fundraiser concert on Feb. 18, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Brookside Community Club. Nine of the participants performed four songs

Attended by almost 40 family members, friends and community members, the concert raised $833 for Hand In Hand Voices. Acupuncture... What’s The Point? by Kearstin R. Tripi, L.Ac cupuncture and Traditional Chinese medicine has become increasingly popular over the past 25 years in the United States. However, many healthcare consumers are still unaware of this relatively painless and effective treatment. Acupuncture is useful in treating conditions such as musculoskeletal pain, stress, migraines, and infertility, to name a few. Some consumers are apprehensive about Acupuncture due to a fear of needles. However, unlike the hypodermic needles that are used to administer shots or take blood, Acupuncture needles are extremely thin. In some cases, the patient might experience a slight prick
A
or tingling sensation at the needle site, but most people report that the procedure is painless and quite relaxing. The efficacy of this ancient medicine speaks for itself and has helped Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine become a bigger part of mainstream healthcare. Every year, more and more physicians are opting to combine Eastern and Western treatments for their patients’ well-being. Research from the National Institute of Health supports this movement showing that Acupuncture is effective for use in pain management, osteoarthritis, postoperative or chemotherapy-related nausea, addiction, stroke rehabilitation, infertility and asthma, among others. The World
Health Organization also lists acupuncture’s efficacy in relieving anxiety, panic disorders and insomnia along with forty-two other medical conditions. Acupuncture is, in fact, a Science based medicine backed by research. Acupuncture is a modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine that originated in Ancient China over 5,000 years ago. The Ancient Chinese discovered that every living being has energy that flows through invisible meridians (energy lines) throughout the body. This energy, known as “Qi” is the motive life force. In healthy individuals the Qi flows smoothly through the channels/ meridians. Imbalance in the flow of Qi results in illness and/or
disease. The same basic principles are used in treating various conditions, today. Acupuncture can be used a sole method of treatment, but also works well as an adjunct therapy. How does Acupuncture Work? Multiple studies have shown that Acupuncture initiates various biological responses. There are several theories to explain how Acupuncture works. In a nutshell, Acupuncture helps the body to do what it was meant to do... heal itself. Some of the most common theories include: - Acupuncture reduces inflammation and relaxes muscles - Acupuncture stimulates
the release of endorphins, which relieve pain - Acupuncture stimulates the release of neurotransmitters (substances that that transmit nerve impulses to the brain) -Acupuncture has a profound effect on the Autonomic Nervous System - Acupuncture stimulates circulation - Acupuncture enhances the body’s immune response - Acupuncture influences the electrical currents of the body Does Acupuncture Hurt? Extremely fine needles are used in the treatment of Acupuncture, making the experience almost painless. Most patients don’t even feel the needles being inserted. The Acupuncture needles used are as fine as
a few hairs on your head. All of my patients find their Acupuncture treatments to be very relaxing. In fact, most people fall asleep during their treatment. What is a typical Acupuncture treatment like? Upon arrival the patient is asked to fill out a detailed health history questionnaire. Then, the acupuncturist will review the health history with the patient and go over the patient’s primary health concern and lifestyle. The acupuncturist will take the patient’s pulses and look at his/her tongue (In Chinese medicine the tongue and pulses are representative of the various organ/meridian systems and help in the diagnostic process). continued on page 8

audience. “They really appreciated the hard work the kids put into it,” says Thompson. “They understood what we were doing, appreciated the dedication and hard work that we put into it. “In the beginning I didn’t know if it was going to take off,” says Thompson, adding that she had not set a fundraising goal. “Any amount is remarkable.” Her plan is to select a different charity for each session she holds. “I would like to continue with different charities all geared toward children,” says Thompson.
For this first session, after careful research and consideration, Thompson selected The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund as her recipient. “I really liked what they stood for,” she says, along with its good rating. “I liked that it was geared toward children. Children should be in a safe place and that’s all that matters.” The PCRF helps Palestinian youths in need of medical assistance, with its most recent focus on a service project in Gaza to help Syrian children needing special surgeries unavailable to them in their wartorn country.
The spring session for Hand In Hand Voices is set for June 5 through May 1. She is not sure of the theme yet, maybe about generosity? “I would like it to be a positive message each time,” all carried out through music. “Music makes people feel something,” says Thompson. “People will be more connected to the cause when they are able to feel something with the music.” To sign up, go to www. handinhandvoices.org. There is no limit to the number of participants. “The more the merrier.”
The number of Acupuncture treatments needed is based on the severity and chronicity of the condition. However, most patients experience relief after the very first treatment. What kind of needles are used? Tiny filiform needles are used for Acupuncture treatment. All of the needles are disposable, pre-sterilized and pre-packaged. After each treatment, the needles are thrown away
and new needles are used every time. Are there any side effects of Acupuncture treatment? Acupuncture is a safe treatment option, offering little to no side effects, making it an ideal alternative to more invasive procedures. Most people do not experience any ill side effects from Acupuncture. Occasionally, minor bruising can occur at the needle site.

cont. from page 6 After the interview, the practitioner will come up with a diagnosis and treatment plan for the patient. Then, the needles will be inserted into various acupuncture points. The patient may feel a heaviness or tingling sensation around the needle insertion site. The needles are typically retained for 20-30 minutes. How many Acupuncture treatments are needed?

Mendham Borough Historical Society To Present Searching For Yankee Doodle
T
he Mendham Borough Historical Society is set to meet on Tues., March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Garabrant Center. Robert Mayers will present the program "Searching for Yankee Doodle —Washington's Soldiers in the American Revolution" at 7:45 p.m. Mayers explores the history of common soldiers, the embodiment of the American Revolution, what in-
spired them to endure the hardships and explores why they fought. It was a challenge for historians to expose the attitudes, behaviors of, and golden myths about these patriots, and were they a reality, wishful thinking or both. Mayers evaluates diverse conceptions, Yankee Doodles' lives before, during, after the war as evidenced in original military records and personal papers.
Descendent of a patriot soldier, author, and Revolutionary War historian, Mayers' travels, research and family accounts shed light on people and places lost or neglected by history. He is a frequent presenter at and contributor to numerous historical societies, Navy/Marine vet, associated with Rutgers and Seton Hall. The general public is invited and parking and program is free.

Mendham Wrestling Has A Banner Year
omething big is happening in Mendham with its wrestling program. In the last two weeks both its high school and youth league has reached an unprecedented level of success. But is it a flash in the pan or will it last? The reality is, this recent success was years in the making starting years ago. In the Youth League, led by five champions, The Mendham-Chester Patriots (M-CP) rolled to its third team title in seven years (2011, 2014, 2017) and fourth overall since 2005 at the Northern New Jersey Youth Wrestling League Tournament (NNJYWL) at Jefferson Township High School. Although Mend-
ham-Chester had only 14 wrestlers for the 19 weight classes, they topped the 30-team field and beat runner-up, Jefferson 203187.5. “We’re getting better every day,” said Patriots Coach Eric Sement. “This has been a really fun team to coach this year. We have a lot of balance. Putting six into the finals really shows the work and dedication these young men have invested into this sport.” Assistant coach J. Bertha added, “It was a great day for our team and our program. We had 6 in the finals and the nearest team had 3 and three of our finalists will be returning.” Eren Sement and Joe Davi won their second NNJYWL titles; Jack Bertha,

Cole Klenke and Andrew Bryan all won their first individual titles. For high school, the Minutemen won its first ever State Sectional Title and then reached the New Jersey Group Four State Championship. Although they lost to Phillipsburg by a close margin, they gave Phillipsburg, the most successful program in state history, a heart attack by nearly knocking them off. Recently, the Minutemen sent 11 of 14 wrestlers to the Regional Tournament surpassing their previous record of six Regional qualifiers. Assistant youth coach and high school wrestling parent Tom Winant says, “Mendham has a wrestling room of great kids and
great families on the rise. For a town like Mendham, normally known for other sports like lacrosse or basketball, we have now crashed through the wall to get in the discussion of NJ wrestling powerhous-

es. Our high school is now ranked 18th in the state. It’s great for the sport to have such great kids do so well. It’s a ‘tough guy’ sport, and no one ever thought of Mendham as tough. However, with a little vision by
a few committed coaches, the kids can enjoy being in the discussion with the big boys.” Keep an eye on this program. Hopefully this is only the beginning.

Homeless Solutions Honors Local Resident At Sold Out Annual Dream Builders’ Bash
O
n Fri., March 3 Homeless Solutions hosted its 17th Annual Dream Builders’ bash at the Westin Governor Morris in Morristown. It was a sold out event and the largest Bash ever, with more than 375 guests in attendance for an evening of cocktails, dinner, dancing, a wine pull, a raffle, and silent and live auctions. The most memorable part of the evening, though, was hearing from a former Homeless Solutions Shelter and Transitional Housing Program participant about her family’s time with Homeless Solutions. She spoke movingly about how impactful the organization’s programs were, “It has been long journey for
our family and if it were not for Homeless Solutions I’m not sure where we would be today. We are so grateful to the staff, the volunteers and donors who make it all possible to help families like us. Today we have good credit, a roof over our heads, and both have higher paying jobs. We feel happy and safe. The motto at Homeless Solutions, “a hand up, not a handout” truly represents the organization. We will never forget and will always be grateful for that hand up!” Among the awards presented, Mendham resident and dedicated Homeless Solutions volunteer Jared Forminard was recognized with the Mary E. Van Kirk Volunteer Spirit Award. Forminard has
been a steadfast volunteer for nearly five years, making monthly food donation pick-ups from the food bank in Hillside; his commitment to this critical and time consuming task has freed up shelter staff to focus on other activities. Homeless Solutions CEO Dan McGuire said, “This was truly an inspiring evening. Over 375 community-minded attendees joined us for a wonderful event, but, more importantly, in support of our mission, programs, and guests.” Homeless Solutions is a private, non-profit organization that has been helping the homeless and working poor in the Morris County since 1983.

Create And Hide Unbreakable Easter Eggs
aster is one of the most important days of the year for Christians. Easter Sunday is filled with symbolism and tradition, some of which harken back to early Christianity, while others trace their origins to paganism. The Easter Bunny and Easter eggs are two Easter traditions with less extensive histories. The Easter Bunny, according to sources including History.com, first arrived in America in the 1700s via German settlers who brought with them their tradition of an egg-laying hare called “Osterhase.” Children would make nests where the rabbit could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the custom spread from Pennsylvania,
where many German immigrants settled, to other areas around the country. Eggs are symbolic of new life and rebirth in many cultures. To Christians, eggs represent the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Another theory suggests that Christians were once forbidden to eat during the Lenten season preceding Easter. Therefore, Christians would paint and decorate eggs for Easter to mark the joyous celebration and cessation of penance and fasting. Even though these traditions have endured, Easter eggs themselves might not be so strong. This year, Easter celebrants may want to experiment with different materials that are more
forgiving and more enduring than standard eggs. Wooden eggs Families may find that wooden eggs are much more forgiving than standard eggs. Wooden eggs don’t have to be boiled, and they don’t need time to harden, and they’re quite maneuverable for young fingers. Decorators can explore different ways to color wooden eggs. Acrylic paints are readily available and safe for users of any age. Wood stains or wood markers also can be used to give the eggs a natural finish. Others may want to rip small pieces of decorative paper to create a decoupage effect on their wooden eggs.
Sew soft eggs Those who are handy with a needle and thread can explore patterns for making soft, stuffed eggs. Cozy fleece or other fabrics can be sewn together to make the general egg shape. Then the egg is filled with polyester filling, feathers or another soft material. Ribbons, buttons, trims, and other decorative touches can personalize the eggs and add a touch of whimsy. Check out www. sew4home.com for their ideas on handmade Easter eggs. Modeling clay Children who love to get their hands dirty may enjoy making Easter eggs out of modeling materials. Colors can be blended together to create a marble-

ized effect. Depending on the clay medium, the eggs may air-harden or may need to be heated at a low temperature in the oven to fully cure. Easter eggs are a fun
tradition that adds to the festivity of spring. While traditional eggs can be used, many different, more long-lasting materials can be used as well.

Acorn Hall Exhibit Pays Tribute To Morris County WWI Contributions

new exhibit featured throughout Acorn Hall opened on Sun., Feb. 19 in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of the United States entry into World War I which took place on April 6, 1917. The exhibit is entitled “1917: World War, Women’s Rights, and Weaponry Sciences,” and will be on display at the Morris County Historical Society’s Headquarters, the historic Acorn Hall until June. “We wanted to incorporate as many aspects of what was going on in 1917 as possible,” said Nicole Rizzuto, curator of Exhibits and Research with MCHS. There was much more going on than just the war in that year. “The year was the impetus of decision,” Rizzuto states, while elaborating on the fact that U.S. entrance into the war sparked many other movements which had already been smoldering. The inspiration behind

the exhibit therefore is not only the war but focuses on local women’s rights movements and Morris County contributions to weaponry sciences which helped aide the U.S. in strategic movements of the war. According to a press release “the exhibit honors the men and women who gave their lives during the war, highlights the culture clash of women seeking recognition as equals and the right to vote, and features the tremendous advances in weaponry science credited to the work of men and women at Picatinny Arsenal and throughout Morris County.” Alison Turnbull Hopkins is a local suffragette who is featured at Acorn Hall at this time. Hopkins was an outspoken woman imprisoned for picketing at the White House for a woman’s rights. Another woman who is featured at the exhibit for different heroics includes Amabel Scharss Roberts who was the first U.S. nurse to die overseas
during WWI. Roberts was a nurse from Madison. Along with other period appropriate clothing the exhibit features artifacts from WWI throughout every room of Acorn Hall. A WWI uniform is on display including camp material on loan from the Butler Museum and Historical Committee. A pop tent is featured along with a medical bag from the MCHS collection. The idea behind the exhibit with a mixture of war artifacts intermixed with everyday items is meant to show “how different things affected different aspects of people’s lives,” states Rizzuto. To showcase Morris County’s contribution to the war effort when it came to weaponry Acorn Hall has dedicated space to Hudson Maxim, who worked on smokeless gunpowder and other technology advances the country needed to win WWI. There is also a photo of Dr. Guy Otis Brewster, whose Brewster-Heller Ar-
mor was a first attempt at making bullet proof vests. The photo shows Brewster demonstrating at Picatinny Arsenal. “I’m really excited about it [the exhibit],” states Rizzuto, who has done extensive research on these subjects. She goes on to explain that this exhibit, “shows how much Morris County impacted the rest
of the world.” Rizzuto explains how easy it is for locals to forget just how much local history can impact the world. The exhibit can be viewed while Acorn Hall is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Group tours of eight or more can be arranged by reservation.

FAMILY TRAVEL EXPERT By: Pam Christiansen, Rainbow Travel
I
have always dreamed about going to Machu Picchu but it seemed so unreachable and difficult to get to. I thought between the high elevations, hiking, and camping, it would be too difficult but it would also be a wonderful and educational family adventure. The history, culture, and cuisine would be so very different from rural northern New Jersey; we decided it was somewhere we had to go. Nine of us were hoping to take this trip with ages ranging from 8-68 as well as a range of physical abil-
ities. It would be quite a logistical puzzle to get around and see everything and still be affordable. We decided a loosely guided tour was best for us and then we can fill in any gaps. We chose a trip with Monograms. A tour like this would provide us with all our transportation, a local guide at each destination and our accommodations. Just like that all of our puzzle pieces were coming together and the trip was coming to fruition. We took the trip in April. We knew the weather would be unpredictable so we packed many layers
and were prepared for it all. Each child packed his or her own pack filled with snacks and entertainment for travel days. They were each given a scavenger hunt, and a fun “quiz” that would guide them through the entire trip so they stayed interested and hopefully absorbed the sites. We spent warm days exploring all of Lima overlooking the Pacific traveling from one beautiful scenic area to another. We enjoyed Alpaca farms, historical sights, small farmers markets with everything from fresh fruit to roasted guinea

pigs on sticks and we even hit a cow with our van! When we arrived at the high elevation in Cusco we were all prepared. We listened to all the suggested ways to avoid altitude sickness and were glad we did. From Cusco we continued on to Aguas Calientes. An amazing little town built at the base of Machu Picchu. The town was filled with people for one reason - to see Machu Picchu. All the hikers who took the long Inca trail come together with those of us who had the same dream to see Machu Picchu but not willing
or able to hike for 4 days to get there. We woke up at sunrise to catch the very first bus up the mountain. The bus climbed the switchbacks as the sun was starting to rise and the clouds were now below us. It was unbelievable. The view we had all seen in books was now in front of us. It was even more amazing than our imaginations. We spent the morning taking it all in and exploring. We tried to capture this moment with many photos and deep breaths. The trip back to Lima was a bit of a blur overshad-
owed by what we had just experienced. With our guide and all of our transportation taken care of for us we could sit back, review all our photos and share our favorite highlights with each other. I particularly loved looking at the kids cameras and seeing what they captured and hearing them tell stories of how their friends will be shocked they ate a guinea pig! Time to start planning our next adventure! Compliments of Rainbow Travel, Route 206, Chester. 1-800-468-2367.

SOS Invites Community To New Thrift Store Open House
pproximately six months ago, when Strengthen Our Sisters (SOS) was at its lowest ebb, possibly on the verge of losing its houses and not being able to provide for the thousands of women and children that come to the non-profit organization for assistance, some very caring, kind people in Livingston read an article in their hometown paper. After visiting SOS and speaking with some of the residents, they decided
to make a donation to enable SOS to open a second thrift store towards the goal of becoming economically independent. After much searching, hard work and struggle, SOS is proud to announce that on Sat., April 15, at noon, an open house with food, music, merriment and surprise awards is set to be held. The new store, Treasures Two is located at the corner of Main Street and Chestnut Avenue in Passaic.
The public is invited to join in and be part of this exciting event. All monies raised by the store will be used to set up households for families who are rebuilding their lives. The thrift store will also be able to provide affordable, high quality items to the community. For donations and additional information call Sandra Ramos, 973-831-6156 or email Susan Batt, susanscb@optonline.net.

New CASA Volunteers Sworn In As Advocates For Abused, Neglected Children
n Feb. 23, a group of community volunteers were sworn in as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) by The Honorable Maritza Berdote Byrne in Morristown. CASA of Morris and Sussex Counties, a local non-profit organization, trains and supervises community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment. The new volunteers have made the extraordinary commitment to “speak up” for these vulnerable children in court and to ensure that they receive the medical and educational resources they need to thrive, and most importantly that they find permanent, safe,
and nurturing homes in a timely manner. Family and friends gathered in the Morris County Courthouse to watch the volunteers take an oath agreeing to advocate for the best interest of the child and to perform the role of a judiciary volunteer. Among the new volunteers are Elaine Backer of Randolph, Agnes Clyne of Morristown, Janet Davis of Morristown, Adele Fasano of Morristown, Karen Gruss of Long Valley, Dawn Haagensen of Morristown, Thomas Kelleher of Madison, Jeanne Seigle of Morristown, and Michelle Sharpe of Towaco. CASA volunteers participate in an extensive 36 hour training program before officially being sworn in to be assigned a child in

the foster care system. The CASA volunteers ensure that these vulnerable children receive the educational and medical resources they need to thrive and that they find safe, permanent, loving homes as soon as possible. CASA volunteers visit with the child regularly attend court hearings, school
meetings, and meet with all parties involved in the child’s case. The volunteers report their findings to the judge and make recommendations for the child’s best interest. “Our volunteers pledge to stay with each child until the case is closed, and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home,” said
Lisa Barsky Firkser, executive director of Court Appointed Special Advocates of Morris and Sussex Counties. “The advocate is often the only consistent adult presence in the child’s life.” CASA of Morris and Sussex Counties is part of a statewide network of community-based, non-prof-
it programs that recruit, screen, train, and supervise volunteers to “Speak Up for a Child.” These children have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Visit casamsc.org or call 973-998-7590 for more information about CASA of Morris and Sussex Counties.
