Boys’ School To Feature Photography Exhibit- Italy By iPhone

elbarton School in Morristown is pleased to exhibit the photographs of artist/photographer Judi Benvenuti during the “Benevenuti in Italia” exhibit in the Delbarton Fine Arts Center from Nov. 14 to Jan. 13. All images are for sale with 20 percent of the profits donated to the Civil Protection Department which continues to be instrumental in helping Italian earthquake victims. Benvenuti is a freelance photographer based in Mendham and has been taking pictures since she first picked up the family’s box camera decades ago in East Orange where she was raised. As the technology of photography and film evolved, so too did Benvenuti’s skills. After receiving a degree at College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, Benvenuti earned fine arts master credits at Columbia University Teachers College, then moved to Europe where she taught in Department of Defense schools in Germany and the UK. Her images of Festivals in Europe were published in National Geographic School Edition and inspired an even deeper passion for photography.

Benvenuti studied with renowned photographers Ansel Adams in Yosemite, and George Tice, Robert Mapplethorpe and Lynn Davis in NYC. She began her freelance business and the National Park Service commissioned her to produce the book, “Morristown the War Years 1775-1793.” Benvenuti has participated in numerous one woman exhibits and group shows throughout the metropolitan area. For 15 years, she was an adjunct professor of photography at Drew University. Her current exhibit, “Benvenuti in Italia,” filled with stunning photos of Venice and Tuscany, could easily be renamed ‘Italia by Phone.’ After many years in the darkroom developing her technical skills, Benvenuti made the leap to digital photography. In fact, every image in this current show were taken with a – “brace yourself” iPhone6 smartphone! The Delbarton community and area residents are invited to attend the opening reception on Nov. 14 at the Delbarton School.

Life-sized Sundial Featured At Frelinghuysen Arboretum for timekeeping even well into the 14th century, Levoyer writes, and sundials remain an interesting and whimsical aspect of many gardens around the world. Now a freshman at TCNJ, Levoyer designed the sundial for the Frelinghuysen Arboretum while she was a senior at Morris Country School of Technology.

By J. L. Shively The earliest surviving sundials can be dated back to ancient Egypt circa 1500 BC,” explains Gold Award Girl Scout

For the project, Levoyer of Parsippany decided to create a “human sundial,” which incorporates a person as part of the sundial to tell the time. As a youth volunteer at the Arboretum for the past four years, Levoyer knew of the staff’s dream to have a sundial like this on the property. continued on page 6

Alexandra Levoyer in the sundial brochure she created to accompany her project. Originally known as “shadow clocks,” the sundial was the most reliable method

Life-sized Sundial...

continued from page 4 Gwen Montgomery, the Senior Horticultural Program specialist at the Arboretum, explains that many other arboreta incorporate human sundials into their gardens as they are “something of interest to children” and are often an ornamental feature in historic gardens such as the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. “It took her over 100 hours to research and construct [the sundial],” explains Montgomery, going on to explain the great time and care Levoyer spent with her father in mapping out true north with a compass. Levoyer also used a GPS for accuracy on the placement of the stepping stones which mark the hours. In her research about sundials, Levoyer was able to contact the American Sundial Association and get longitude and latitude numbers for Morristown specifically to generate the most accurate time for the sun clock, explains Montgomery. The stepping stones which represent the hour markers and the date-scale were cast by hand and Levoyer’s sundial

also allows the user to account for Day Light Savings Time. According to Levoyer’s brochure, all sundials consist of two parts. The first part, the base plate or faceplate, is the surface which marks the hours of the day. The sundial at the arboretum has large stepping stones to mark each hour of the day. The second part of a sundial is the gnomon, which is the vertical object which casts a shadow to mark the hour on the base plate. In the case of a human sundial, a person takes the place of the gnomon. To create an accurate marking of time with the human sundial at the Arboretum, the person acting as the gnomon must stand on a date-scale slab according to the current month and raises an arm overhead to cast a shadow, allowing their shadow to fall on the coinciding hour stone, or between them depending on the time of day. Levoyer explains in her brochure that there are “more than seven different types of sundials” and the sundial she has created at the Arboretum is an Analemmatic sundial,

which means that that the gnomon of the dial moves according to different factors throughout the year. The sundial is located near the Branching Out Children’s Garden at the Arboretum which is on the parking lot side of the garden and is approximately 12 ft. by 30 ft. Construction for the sundial took around a year to complete from its conception to its completion in May. The Arboretum held a public dedication of the sundial at that time. The Arboretum is free and open daily to the public from sunrise to sunset. For more information or for maps of the Arboretum, visit the Haggerty Education Center on the Arboretum Grounds, which is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Inspiration from the Editor...

Motivation Sweetens The Recipe For Weight Loss

t a recent exercise class, a new member walked in at least half way into the start of class. No biggie, I was few minutes late myself. But when I noticed that she was exercising without any shoes on, I thought well now that’s motivation! The instructor stopped class and ran out to her car thinking she had an extra pair in her trunk, as they happen to wear the same size, but realized they were no longer there. When asked where her shoes were, the member responded, ‘I just couldn’t find them.’ Exercise and dieting go hand and hand, most trainers and fitness consultants would agree, when it comes to weight loss. But it is that third element that makes all the difference. Like drinking coffee without cream and sugar, trying to lose weight without that key ingredient, motivation, it just does not mix well. No matter what the goal, success is hard to achieve without that motivation. Some may give up their lunch hour to walk four miles every day. Others may give up something they love like eating dessert or drinking

Roofing

alcohol. Some figure if they exercise everyday they will lose weight, but that is not always the case. Most individuals, once they reach that magical age of 45, need to push themselves even harder or add on even more exercise to their regular routine. Instead of running four miles, run twice that day and try for six miles. One dad I know spent his free time running his kids around to activities. But he found his motivation when he jumped on that treadmill 11 p.m. at night to still squeeze in that run while others would probably be watching the news or hitting the hay. Back to that woman at my class, as we were doing our squats, she looked at me with an expression of pain. The class was challenging. I looked at her and told her I admire her motivation. This mother was late to class, missing almost half of it, but still showed up without shoes on her feet. Toward the end of class, two other women came in to the building, not to exercise, but to set up for a funeral repass for a friend who just died. As they were arranging the tables and lining up the trays filled with

delicious pastries as the sweet aroma of coffee filled the room, we were toning with our weights, doing sit ups on the mat and stretches at the end. I was grateful and appreciative for that moment that I was able to be part of a group of women sharing in an exercise class bonded by the same goal of taking care of

Families Attend Free Lawn Party At Thomas Edison’s Glenmont Estate

by Michele Guttenberger n Sat., Sept. 24, the Thomas Edison National Historic Park site offered a free family day of family activities. It was in the tradition of Edison’s own family’s lifestyle with the participation of some outdoor games that were popular with them. After a summer of family programs at the Edison Factory Lab site, it was a nice program change to have the official first days of fall outdoors at Glenmont. This is the home and estate of Thomas and Mina Edison. Like Edison’s factory laboratory it too is part of the National Historical Park Site. Glenmont resides inside the gated

E

community of Llewellyn Park and visitors were instructed to pick up a car pass from the Laboratory Visitor Center first. Thomas Edison was there to greet family guests to his lawn party in spirit with a lifesize cardboard cutout of this famous Llewellyn Park neighbor. Families got to experience a historic view of West Orange’s prosperous suburbia during the early 20th Century. This was an emerging era of New Jersey’s train commuters and family suburb living. It had a comforting combination of modern electric conveniences while retaining the traditional barn of riding horses and a place for fresh egg laying hens. The park

Did You Know?

tiquette regarding gratuities varies across the globe, and tipping may not be required in certain parts of the world. In fact, according to the travel resource ShermansTravel, tipping actually may be deemed offensive in some areas of the world. In various countries, travelers may not be required to tip. Countries in

which gratuities are unnecessary include Australia, Belgium, China, France, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, and Vietnam. Travelers who want to avoid offending local workers can refer to travel guides before visiting foreign countries to determine whether tipping is de rigueur or unexpected.

ranger curators of the site have preserved a time capsule of the way things were when the Edison’s family lived there. The park rangers had organized programs that made this free family day both an educational and delightful experience. Activities included tours of the 29-room Victorian Mansion and tours of the poured concrete garage which houses a circa 1900 Locomobile, 1922 Model T and the 1936 Brewster belonging to son Charles Edison, Governor of NJ in 1940. Kids got to enjoy water color painting and obstacle course races on the lawn, Victorian board games, Junior Ranger activities, tree and leaf identification, and birding activities. Adults enjoyed strolling through the 15-acre estate, garage, greenhouse and the gravesite of Thomas and Mina Edison. It is noteworthy history to mention the 38-year-old widower Thomas Edison got a second chance at being a family man at Glenmont with his second wife Mina and their three younger children. Mina gave birth to all her children there and Edison peacefully passed away in his bed at Glenmont at age 84. This place was an attraction

for neighborhood friends, associates and world dignitaries alike who were given guest invitations by Mrs. Edison. Now today’s pubic can reenact the experience of being an invited guest to the Edison home. For more info on special family fall programs at Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange. Mendham Author Details History And Gives Insider’s View Of Sewing Machine Company

I

By Cheryl Conway n his first book, Mendham Borough author Jack Buckman stitches together history, business and drama in a nonfiction book about the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Recently self-published in May 2016 through Dog Ear Publishing, Buckman’s book is titled “Unraveling The Threads: The Life, Death and Resurrection of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, America’s First Multi-National Corporation.” Buckman’s book recently won the Dog Ear Publishing Award of Literary Excellence, a recognition given to nine of the 2015 titles received, that flattered and caught Buckman by surprise. “I think it’s a good read,” admits Buckman. “It’s not all balance sheets and numbers,” he says, adding that one of his obstacles was trying to make a business history story with numbers and facts interesting with twists and true tales of the drama and players behind the first corporate giant

with manufacturing factories around the world. “My wife is proud of me for having done it and for having done it well,” Buckman adds. Buckman, 78, spent 17 years working as an executive with the Singer Company in various positions in New York, London, Paris and Chicago. When he was attending Northwestern University in the 1960s, after serving in the army, “I was in the first wave of NBA’s. When I was looking for a job Singer came to Northwestern,” he says as the company was looking to hire from “prominent business schools.” During his senior year, he had been working on a case method involving an international company. “I learned after I joined Singer, that was the Singer Company,” he explains ironically about the “nightmare case” from his college years. While working for the Singer Co., Buckman spent 10 years in France and worked

closely with the general manager there, Jacques Ehrsam, who was the grandson of the first general manager who worked at Singer. When the company became involved in a hostile takeover, Buckman left and ended up working at Yale University in 1983 as its vice-president and chief financial officer. He was at Yale when the idea of writing about Singer developed by an economic history professor, “who was a nut about France,” became intrigued by Jack’s description of Singer’s history and birthplace of many of the modern retail tools now taken for granted.

Although he still maintains an engineering firm business in New Haven, Conn., Buckman retired ten years ago. He left Yale in 1988 and worked as the chief financial officer of J. Crew and then at a private equity firm in New York, before becoming the principle owner at Westcott and Mapes Inc., the second oldest engineering firm in Connecticut, he says. “When I retired, I kept talking about it,” says Buckman, “My wife [Dr. Linda Gillam] said ‘enough talk, do it.’” That was eight years ago when Buckman began his research, and five years ago when he began writing the book about the Singer Corporation. Buckman found an interesting link that the Elizabeth factory was the largest single product factory in the world and was the repository for all of Singer’s records. “When Singer closed that factory,” all of those documents were given to the state of N.J., and the same for the state of N.Y. All of those records ended up at the Wisconsin Historical Society, where Buckman turned for a lot of his research for his book.

He found that in 1851, Isaac Singer and his partners wrote the accounting records from early on. “They were hand-typed, those records, 23 linear feet, eight feet tall. They were in the process of curating them.” Buckman would fly back and forth for his research; bulk of the work was then done online. Taking those facts and creating an interesting book was the next challenge. “Being financial I tend to be linear,” Buckman admits. “A lot of agents, a lot of rejections,” he says of the many manuscripts submitted. One agent told him, “There’s a story in there somewhere,” so he suggested that Buckman does some “poking” at narrative non-fiction. “I had 21 drafts of that book,” he admits. He says he found “good fortune I live with a good editor,” his wife who cleaned up the final draft. In the book’s synopsis, “A brilliant tinkerer/inventor and a lawyer/marketing genius partnered to create Singer, a retail colossus that over 120 years grew into a universally recognized brand synonymous with quality and value. Following World War II, four successive CEOs made a series

of catastrophic decisions in their efforts to redefine the company as competing in industries other than sewing. Of the four, one was forced out and subsequently murdered, one died of an unexpected heart attack just as he was about to defend the company from a takeover, one succeeded in the takeover, then dismembered the company before going to prison, and one played investors, tax authorities, securities regulators, and banks against each other until he suddenly just vanished. The machinations of these four comprised a quarter-centurylong soap opera, with power struggles, hostile takeovers, tax evasion, fraud, and even flight to China just a few steps ahead of the authorities.” Buckman recommends his books to anyone in a professional career or business career, those who likes history or drama. “It’s a book which has several dimensions,” he says. It combines business history; tells the story of Isaac Singer with his 22 children and three simultaneous households; gives political insight into corporations; describes the birth and development of sewing machines. “Singer sold a million machines in Russia in 1918” during the revolution, Buckman says. It never sold that many sewing machines until after WWII. Everything before that was mass production. When the sewing machine first came out it sold for $125 in mid-1900. “That was 25 percent of annual income,” he notes. “It was like buying an automobile.” It was mass production which enabled Singer to “drive the price down” to $35 per machine, which was still expensive during that time, Buckman adds.

The sewing machine was the “first inhome appliance,” Buckman says, requiring many marketing innovations such as installment selling and in-home demonstrations. “It was not easy to use, right out of the gate and never has been.” By the end of the 19th century, Singer controlled 80 percent of the world market, adds Buckman. “It’s a good story,” says Buckman, as to why people should read his book. “It’s a good tale, light parts, political parts; takeover battles of the 60’s and 70’s; there’s history, business history, corporate intrigue.” On the local front, at one point Singer employed more than 20,000 people in N.J. at the Elizabethport product factory, Wayne data center, Denville research laboratory, Clifton mechanized sewing and work handling systems and Mount Laurel information systems. Looking ahead, Buckman has plans to write another story about Isaac Singer’s life and maybe another book on 99 year old Jacques Ehrsam and his life in France. “I’ve spent many hours with him interviewing him over the past decade, lots of tape recording, generous with artifacts.” Buckman’s book, “Unraveling The Threads: The Life, Death and Resurrection of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, America’s First Multi-National Corporation,” is available online through Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and can be ordered at bookstores. Printed version is $19.95. On Thur., Nov. 12, Buckman has been invited to speak at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield. For more information, go to www.unravelingsingersewing.com.

Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign, and an authentic copy of the 1948 “Dewey Defeats Truman” headline of the “Chicago Daily Tribune.” Complementing the newspapers are period clothing such as an 1876 dress worn to an inauguration party for President Rutherford B. Hayes, political paraphernalia including campaign buttons for Adlai Stevenson and Franklin Roosevelt, and a 1917 telegram sent by President Woodrow Wilson and other cultural artifacts– all from the extensive collections of the MCHS. The exhibit closes on Jan. 29, 2017. The cost to participate in Tamburro’s exhibit tour is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, $7 for students, and free for MCHS members. Abilities Receives Grant From Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation

bilities of Northwest Jersey has received a $7,500 Quality of Life grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. The award was one of 79 grants totaling more than $575,704 awarded by the Reeve Foundation to nonprofit organizations nationwide that provide more opportunities, access, and daily quality of life for individuals living with paralysis, their families, and caregivers. Conceived by the late Dana Reeve, the program has awarded more than 2,700 grants totaling more than $20 million since 1999. Abilities will use the grant to purchase Smart Tables, which accommodate four individuals in wheelchairs simultaneously, include those to facilitate communication, learning and prevocational skills. Use of such devices also improves physical dexterity and creates opportunities for group activities and peer interaction, helping to make Abilities’ MSN a stimulating resource for individuals with limited mobility. “It is with deep appreciation that we share this news of the Reeve Foundation’s generous contribution to expand the use of assistive technology in our MSN program,” said Abilities CEO Cynthia B. Wildermuth. “Their support will change the lives of those

we serve with mobility impairments. We are grateful and hope this is the beginning of a rewarding collaboration with the foundation.” Awarded twice yearly, grant requests were evaluated and scored based on a rigorous review process to determine funding for organizations that improve daily life for those living with paralysis, as well as their families and caregivers. In this particular grant cycle, the grantee review board awarded a significant number of grants in medically underserved areas for modification projects, animal service programs and veteran programs. The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation Quality of Life Grants Program was created to address the myriad needs of children and adults living with paralysis, as well as provide assistance and education to their families and caregivers. Funded programs serve individuals living with paralysis caused by injuries, diseases or birth conditions, including but not limited to, stroke, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Artists Present A Haunting At the Hive Art Exhibition

he Gallery at the Hive/MCAW in Chester is pleased to announce its autumn season art exhibition, “A Haunting at the Hive.” The gallery will display the magnificent art of magic and mayhem created by more than 25 of the scariest, silliest and most compelling collection of regionally and internationally acclaimed visual artists. Curated by Chaotic Attractors, the show has been open since Sat., Oct. 8, and remains on view through Nov. 10, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. In the spirit of the Halloween season, these selected works take the viewing audience on journeys of dread and delight. Submitted for approval – the spectacular horror of the candlelit Grand Guignol; dis-

tant, muffled murmurs heard in a stark, darkened forest at midnight; a seedy traveling circus carrying freaky strangers and seductive secrets; eternal struggles of good and evil played out in the guise of costumed Trick or Treating youngsters – all these and more await at “A Haunting at the Hive.” On opening night, The Hive Main Stage will supply an evening of “live” spooky contemporary rock music with local and NYC bands to jam out to. Terrifying drinks and blood curdling snacks will be served. For more information about “A Haunting at the Hive” exhibition and inquiries regarding gallery hours of operation, call 908-879-8753 or visit www.mcartsworkshop.com.

In addition, hundreds of additional blood drives need to be scheduled to meet

projected hospital demand. Current inventory of several blood types is running below the desired target level. “It’s simple: hospital patient demand for blood often outpaces our best efforts to recruit donors and schedule blood drives,” said NYBC Executive Director of Donor Recruitment Andrea Cefarelli. “There are always reasons but we have to overcome that for the sake of hospital patients who need us.” “This is one of the toughest times of the year,” Cefarelli added. “We’re asking for our dedicated supporters to roll up their sleeves to make sure we’re able to provide our hospital partners with whatever they need to take care of their patients.” Blood products have a short shelf life – from five to 42 days, so constant replenishment is necessary. Each and every day there are patients who depend on the transfusion of red blood cells, platelets and plasma to stay alive. But blood and blood products can’t be manufactured.

They can only come from volunteer blood donors who take an hour to attend a blood drive or visit a donor center.
