A

Not All Headaches are Created Equal

lmost everyone has experienced a headache, at some point in their life, to varying degrees. In fact, roughly 45 million Americans suffer from Headaches each year. In today’s world, most people reach into the medicine cabinet for one of the various pain relievers to alleviate their head pain. But what happens when that doesn’t work? Or, the headaches become more frequent and more painful? Some get headaches so often and so painful, they even take prescription drugs with side effects and no avail. But have you ever stopped to think, “What is causing my headache?” Headaches and more severe headaches, known as Migraines, can be caused by various triggers including foods, chemicals or preservatives in foods, allergens in the environment, chemicals in cleaning products or herbicides/pesticides, sinus congestion, tension in the neck or jaw, lack of sleep, dehydration, stress, and the list goes on… Sometimes the cause is completely unknown and with no relief the patient can be left hopeless, debilitated and in pain. An assessment by an Acupuncturist can often identify and treat imbalances (that are causing the headaches) that are unknown to the patient previously.

In Chinese Medicine not all headaches are created

equally. Rather, during an assessment, we evaluate the individual patient on many levels to determine their exact symptoms (i.e Is the headache frontal? One sided? Behind the eyes? Is there nausea? Frequency and intensity of pain?....) and if there are any triggers. We take a whole body approach and assess the patient’s physical condition as well as their constitution, emotional health, diet and lifestyle. Unlike the blanket treatment western medicine offers which is typically some type of pain reliever, Chinese Medicine finds a specific treatment for each patient based on their individual symptoms. Five patients suffering “headaches” may receive five completely different treatments. By addressing the root cause, Acupuncture can be a safe way to prevent and treat various types of headaches, without the unwanted side effects of medications.

Based on the individual assessment and diagnosis, tiny needles are inserted into various points on the body. Depending on the case, small electrodes can be attached to specific needles that elicit a small electrical current. The feeling of the electric stimulation on the needles is a comfortable sensation that generally elicits a feeling of tingling, tapping or heaviness. The electric stimulation en-

hances the release of specific neurochemicals which aids in the treatment of headaches. The needles are typically retained for 20-30 minutes, during which the patient is left to relax and take a nap.

Acupuncture is known to be effective and can offer long standing results, but it is not always a quick fix. Especially if the headaches are chronic, several treatments may be required to achieve the full result. Again, this is because it is addressing the root cause and not just covering up symptoms like other treatments.

Will Democrats in 2020 Again ‘Fall in Love’?

here are large historical differences between America’s two major political parties in how they choose their presidential nominees.

Consider this: Since 1952, there have been 11 presidential elections where there wasn’t a Republican president running for reelection. In 10 of those 11, the Republican candidate who led in the major polls in the year before the election went on to win the presidential nomination.

The lone exception -- ironically, given today’s headlines -- was former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani who inexplicably chose to skip the first 2008 tests in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina to stumble into Florida and withdraw from the race.

Another tradition of GOP voters (which they disregarded in 2016 when nominating now-President Donald Trump) has been to nominate the candidate whose “turn it was.” Republican voters resembled the pattern of the local Rotary Club, where last year’s recording secretary was promoted to this year’s club vice president on the way to becoming next year’s club president -- orderly and predictable.

Remember 1976: Former California Gov. Ronald Reagan challenged the sitting Republican president, Gerald R. Ford, and came within a whisker of winning the nomination. So whose turn was it in 1980? You guessed it: Reagan’s. And who finished second to Reagan in 1980?

George H.W. Bush, that’s who. And in 1988, it was Bush’s turn; he won the nomination over Sen. Bob Dole.

So the next time there was an open GOP nomination, in 1996, the choice was the 1988 runner-up: Dole. Sen. John McCain, who finished second to Gov. George W Bush in the 2000 primaries, succeeded him as the 2008 stan-

Mark Shields dard-bearer by defeating former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who -- you guessed it -- would become the Republican presidential nominee four years later.

Democrats have been far less predictable and, seemingly, more emotional in selecting their presidential standard-bearers. While Republican voters, until quite recently, have predictably “fallen in line” by promoting the most recent runner-up, Democrats instead seem to want to “fall in love.” Democrats have a marked preference for the “new face” over those who have run before.

Examples of this pattern include Barack Obama, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Michael Dukakis and George McGovern -- all of whom were nominated as first-time candidates.

In 2016, Democrats broke the pattern by choosing Hillary Clinton, who had lost the nomination to Obama in 2008, over Bernie Sanders, then a first-time aspirant.

ho is funding the militant illegal immigrant youth army of thousands of entitled “Dreamers” that marched to Washington, D.C., for the Supreme Court hearing this week on President Barack Obama’s unconstitutional amnesty program?

Follow the money; find the truth.

I’ve got the “Open Borders Inc.” breakdown for you of so-called DACA financiers and enablers on both sides of the political spectrum. Call them what they are: the “American Students Last” lobby.

Let’s start with Charles Koch. The libertarian billionaire has thrown his weight and fortune behind an amnesty brigade called the LIBRE Initiative.

While the establishment right purports to oppose identity politics, LIBRE wraps itself in the mantle of “empowering Hispanics” to “advance liberty” and “prosperity.” Koch has poured more than $10 million into the ethnocentric group since 2011 under the slogan “Limited Government. Unlimited Opportunity.”

Translation: driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants, in-state tuition discounts for illegal immigrant students and securing a Congressional deal to codify the Obama administration’s blanket deportation shields and work permits for 800,000 illegal immigrant students if the Supreme Court strikes the deal down.

Koch operatives send out weekly press releases urging Congress to “Protect Dreamers Now,” “Achieve a permanent solution for Dreamers” (hint: It’s not deportation), and “act promptly on relief for Dreamers.” Along with the Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity, LIBRE sponsored a “pop-up art exhibit” propagandizing the benefits of illegal immigrant Dreamers to coincide with

Next up: the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The Big Business lobbyists for cheap labor have prioritized illegal immigrant amnesty legislation since 2014, when the Chamber dumped $50 million to protect border-jumpers from deportation and win them employment authorization documents. “Stripping DACA recipients of their ability to legally live and work in the country will harm them,” the D.C. fat cats lamented this week.

Then there’s Facebook. All week long, young users of the Silicon Valley giant’s Instagram app have been fed heart-tugging ads highlighting Dreamer families and their activist sisters and brothers, including the George Soros-funded street demonstrators of United We Dream, Make the Road New York and CASA de Maryland.

Facebook’s lobbying arm, FWD.us, disseminated a letter from 10 of its illegal immigrant Dreamer employees “in solidarity with” all immigrants living and working here in violation of our laws. continued on page 6

Leaders of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops convened masses at the border to condemn patriots who use the accurate term “invasion” to describe the violent siege in the Southwest.

Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles pledged that “we will never abandon you” and enlisted American churchgoers to pray for illegal immigrant families.

Such virtue-signaling gestures have never been extended to American families permanently separated from their children and grandchildren because of criminal-coddling sanctuary policies and porous fences, of course.

Microsoft and Princeton University jointly filed the Supreme Court briefs on behalf of Dreamers suing for the right to stay here illegally. Princeton also lobbied on Capitol Hill to extend the endless “temporary protected status” and work permits of 300,000 low-wage workers from Central America. Microsoft has punched American students twice in the gut, leading the charge not only for a massive pipeline of illegal immigrant youths but also for millions of H-1B and F-1 foreign student visa holders.

Online Friendship Inspires Young Learners at West Morris Central

By Megan Roche chance meeting in a message board group in 2005 for a common illness led to a whole new chapter for Kathy Kulfan, a teacher at West Morris Central.

When she first met Ella Burakowski, she learned about a common illness from a Facebook support group. What Kulfan didn’t know was how she would learn much more from Burakowski and her family’s story of the Holocaust.

On Oct. 18, Kulfan took a group of students to the new Auschwitz exhibit in New

York City. What made the experience special was who joined the West Morris teacher. After reading Burakowski’s book, Hidden Gold, with her class, Kulfan wanted to give her students the opportunity to meet the author.

During their field trip, students were able to ask Burakowski questions and get a first hand perspective of what they were seeing.

Kulfan noted that Burakowski was treated like a movie star by her students.

“Ella was beside herself when she met my students. Getting to meet Ella was like hanging out with an old friend. You could not

have asked for it to go any better. It was like long lost friends that we haven’t seen in a long, long time,” Kulfan said.

Kulfan and Burakowski, who had never met in person prior to their New York City trip, were thrilled when the opportunity presented itself to get together and learn about the historical event together.

“It was a very special day for us (Ella and her husband, Marshall). Going through the exhibit with all of the students made it that much more meaningful. The kids were amazing as well as the other faculty who joined them.” Burakowski said.

Burakowski went above and beyond to answer any and all questions that Kulfan’s students had. On Oct. 19, Burakwoski and Kulfan, joined by Marshall and Kulfan’s husband, Bob, went to brunch to recap the day prior and get to know each other better. Ella spoke very highly of Kulfan’s students, as did many of Burakowski’s followers.

“Kathy Kulfan, what you’ve done for your students will leave an unforgettable impact on them and future generations. As they say in Hebrew, Kol Hakavod (well done or good job).” Burakowski’s sister, Sarah, a retired teacher from Canada, commented on Facebook.

To top things off, Burakowski brought each student a Hidden Gold notepad and

bookmark to which they accepted with joy.

Kulfan also brought the Burakowski’s a gift too. The Burakowski’s are now officially part of the West Morris Central family with their new sweatshirts that truly puts pride in the pack.

Thanks to the world of technology, Kulfan’s students were truly given a once in a lifetime experience. While many have complained about the world of technology, Kulfan has embraced it fully and plans to use it for many years to come to educate her students.

“My students will never forget about this experience or the Holocaust. Our time with Ella and Marshall will live forever in all of our lives.” Kulfan said.

Mendham Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Russ Raffay Reaches 100-Win Career Mark

By Jerry Del Priore est Morris Mendham head boy’s varsity soccer coach Russ Raffay hit a fantastic milestone this year.

He picked up his 100th career victory — a 2-1 win over Madison in the first round of the Morris County Soccer Tournament — in eight years at the school earlier in the 2019 season.

Raffay and the Minutemen went on to win three more games this campaign, bringing his career total wins to 103.

Along the way, Raffay has captured two Group 3 New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) titles. However, the 51-year-old coach has never made it about himself.

“With the 100 victories, I never played in a game,” Raffay said matter-of-factly. “It’s (been) all about the kids. It’s been an amazing journey.”

As for the two state championships — a 4-0 shutout over Toms River South in 2015, and a 2-1 win against Mainland in 2017 — Raffay said, “It was unforgettable. Your season ends in a victory. To end in a victory is amazing.”

While West Morris Mendham finished

this season at 5-9-3, he knew his team was in transition mode this year but hoped for the best. Unfortunately for the Minutemen, injuries hit the team pretty hard.

“We’re in a rebuilding phase,” Raffay said at the time of the interview. “We haven’t been healthy all season long,” adding that he had five starters out the previous week.

Wins and loses aside, Raffay said it has been the positive relationships he has formed with his current and former players — some of which have gone on to play at high, competitive college levels — over his long tenure at the school that really makes the effort and hard work all worthwhile.

Interestingly enough, Raffay’s said his first win at West Morris Mendham came with Gavin Coutts, a former Minuteman who played at the University of Scranton, on the club. His 100th triumph had his brother, Ethan, on the squad.

“We have had kids that have played all over,” he said. “I pride myself with the relationships I have with the former players.

I texted with them after they’ve graduated.

It’s a good culture we have. That’s what we pride (coaching staff) ourselves on. We take great pride in building great overall charac-

ter people.”

While Raffay is uncertain of his soccer future, as he’s in the final year of seminary school at Seton Hall, and will be a fully ordained Deacon in June, he said the program will be in good hands when the time is right.

He noted that he has a wonderful assistant in Lindsay Schartner, who will do an awe-

some job.

“I don’t know what the future holds, but it’s been about the journey,” the father of four children said. “Coaching, it’s been great. When it’s time to turn it over to Lindsay, I’ll turn it over to her. She’s probably one of the best coaches I ever worked with.”

Morristown-Based Somos Gives Back to Nicaragua Youth Through Soccer

By Jerry Del Priore hen Sam Bensley was 15 years old, he took a trip with his family to rural Nicaragua.

It left a profound mark on Bensley’s young life, as he saw firsthand the struggles the locals had endured. But he also noticed the way soccer and other sports positively impacted the youth of the area.

However, there was only one soccer ball in the whole town. So Bensley started bringing a few soccer balls with him in his luggage on every returning trip. The Morristown resident wanted to bring more sports equipment with him, but could only carry so much on each voyage.

Bensley’s trips inspired him to start his own non-profit organization, to work on a larger scale while serving more people in need.

“We were able to connect with the locals through soccer,” the London, England-born Bensley recollected. “I was exposed to poverty at an early age. I have never been in the position to miss a meal. Seeing what it was like in a thirdworld country was eye-opening.”

Founded in 2014, Bensley, a Rutgers University graduate, started Somos, The Nicaragua Project. The sports-related charity aims to change the world one soccer ball at time, by establishing sports camps in deeply poverty-stricken regions of Nicaragua’s countryside that teach life lessons such as leadership, teamwork and healthy living.

“The thing I love about sports is it can transcend culture,” said Bensley, who was a two-sport student-athlete (soccer, wrestling) at Morristown High School. “It doesn’t matter where you’re from, sports is a great equalizer.”

Somos hooked up with Peaceworks -- a New Jersey orga-

nization that supports grassroots community organizations in Nicaragua that helps overcome poverty, violence against women and environmental destruction -- which assited Somos with delivery logistics.

However, Somos’ first goodwill delivery didn’t go as planned, as its donations, approximately 500 pounds worth

of sports equipment, were momentarily confiscated.

“I told one of the custom agents that I would give him a baseball glove to give to his son,” he said. “But all of our equipment was seized after that. I think they were just doing their jobs, to be fair. I had to pay a $300 tax, just to get that continued on page 14

“We like to plan an athletic recreation center in Granada, Nicaragua -- a place where they (kids) can play in a local sports league and hangout,” Bensley said, adding the organization would like to incorporate education.

“In Nicaragua, the school attendance rate is among the lowest in the world,” he said.

Long Valley Children’s Sports Foundation Gives Back to NJ’s Less Fortunate

After having a catch with a 10-year-old boy from Homeless Solutions, a homeless shelter and transitional housing facility in Morristown, where she volunteered at the time, Bauer noticed he had some talent. But she learned he wasn’t involved in any organized sports due to economic reasons.

Bauer, a former accomplished high school softball player who suited up for Pingry School in Basking Ridge, had trouble understanding why school-aged children couldn’t play organized sports.

“The inequalities resonated with Abby,” said Tracey Bauer, Abby’s mother and a civil litigation attorney.

That’s when Abby decided to write the David Wright Foundation, to start raising funds on behalf of the children at Homeless Solutions so they could be afforded sports-related opportunities that other New Jersey kids enjoyed.

The New York Mets’ third baseman’s foundation responded with a $1,500 donation. Ex-San Francisco 49er quarterback Steve Young followed suit with a $500 charitable contribution.

In addition, Andray Blatche, a former NBA player and a current member of the Tianjin Gold Lion of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), invited a group of children from Homeless Solutions to the Barclays Center Arena to see a Brooklyn Nets (his team at the time) game as his guests.

Overall, it was a smashing success for the wide-eyed New Jersey children. While Abby was making a huge differ-

“She was realizing she was making an impact on these kids,” Tracey Bauer said of her daughter’s work with the children at Homeless Solutions. “But what about the other kids in New Jersey,” Abby thought.

So, Abby created and founded Teams For Kids Foundation. TFKF is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that seeks to provide the necessary funding to allow children from homeless and low-income families within the State of New Jersey to participate in recreational sports programs.

Since TFKF’s inception in 2014, Tracey Bauer said that it has raised over $40,000 to further its worthy cause of utilizing sports to assist New Jersey social service nonprofits in helping children realize their potential.

How To Tell You’re Buying High-Quality Furniture (and How To Avoid the Cheap Stuff)

hy spend $5,000 on a sofa when I can get one for $500?”

This is a question that I get asked a lot and it’s a good one. As a designer, I consider educating my clients a big part of my job. The old tag line for Syms - “an educated consumer is our best customer” holds just as true for furniture as it was for men’s suits.

Let me start by saying you don’t have to spend $5,000 for a great quality sofa, but I can pretty much guarantee a $500 sofa is a ‘throw away’. And the same goes for case goods like dressers and tables.

Things to look for when shopping for quality upholstered pieces.

Frame construction Are they using kiln dried hardwoods, pressboard, or plywood and why is this important?

Kiln dried hardwoods are just that – solid pieces of wood, kiln dried to reduce moisture, so the wood won’t warp. Particle board and plywood have wood in them, but the wood is held together with glue, and many glues are made with formaldehyde a known carcinogen. Over time, the furniture may ‘off gas’ and formaldehyde will get in the air. Good quality furniture also has corner blocking that is double doweled and screwed in place in stress joints.

High quality seat cushions Heavy gauge hand-tied spring coils provide lasting support in the seat. You’ve probably heard the term, eight-way hand tied and this refers to each spring being tied at eight different points to the frame. You can find sinuous coils in the back to provide additional support. Quality seat cushions have wrapped springs encased with foam and then plumped up with down. These spring down seats are the most comfort-

able and longest lasting. And there are plenty of down-alternatives that provide the same comfort and feel without the potential allergy issues.

Typically, inexpensive furniture cushions are just foam – that’s why they sag after a few months of use. And keep an eye on the foam content. Some foams contain ethylene oxide, another probable carcinogen.

Look for greener, natural based foam and non-toxic water-based adhesives.

When shopping for case goods Again, look for kiln dried hardwoods. For stained pieces, wood should be selected for optimal grain and color match. Quality pieces will have drawers with dovetails and double fronts. And drawer sides, backs and bottoms are made of long wearing hardwood rather than particle board or soft pine. You’ll want glued and pinned mortise and tenon joints for table legs and aprons.

Less expensive grade furniture may only be stapled. A good way to know what your getting is to inspect a drawer, where you’ll easily be able to see dovetails.

The final finish is also very important. All surfaces should be finished on both sides so that changes in humidity won’t warp them. The top coat should be able to repel liquids, so glasses don’t leave a ring. If the piece is custom made, you’ll want to be sure it has ample time to cure. A good finish will create depth and dimensionality and will last for years.

IMPLANT DENTISTRY Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in. Since that loose upper denture was made, she had been unhappy with the situation. She inquired about the possibility of a fixed bridge supported by implants.

Mendham Township Elementary School Named a National Blue Ribbon School

By Steve Sears endham Township Elementary School was recently named a National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education.

The school was one of nine in New Jersey to achieve the honor.

“We were officially notified in September that we received the National Blue Ribbon Award,” proudly states Principal Julianne Kotcho. “This is the first time the school has received this award. Our middle school received this award in 2014. We are currently the only school district in New Jersey that has received the award in all district schools.”

A school-wide celebration with the Home School Association is being planned. “And the school watched the National Blue Ribbon Ceremony via live stream on November 15,” adds Kotcho. “It is all very exciting and we are looking forward to celebrating.”

The following, gleaned from the National Blue Ribbon School website describes its history in brief: Secretary of Education Terrel H. Bell originated the Blue Ribbon Schools program in 1982.

The National Blue Ribbon School Program was the brainchild of the second Secretary of Education, Terrel H. Bell, named by President Reagan. Best known for commissioning the study of American education that resulted

in A Nation at Risk, Bell created the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award in 1982 to bring public attention to the best schools in the United States and to facilitate communication and sharing of best practices within and among schools. At the same time, Bell also originated the Distinguished Principal Award to recognize the critical role school leaders play in effective schools. This award has been renamed the Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership.

The program is supported through ongoing collaboration with the National Association of Elementary School Principals, Association for Middle Level Education, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Kotcho, herself in education for 27 years, 19 as a school administrator, and Principal of the 399-student Mendham Township Elementary School since 2013, added the following via an official email sent out to her school community. “This award is a tremendous honor and recognizes the amazing achievements of our students, staff, and families at MTES. As principal of MTES, I am so proud of the continued focus on our students’ academic success and their development as happy, healthy young people. We are grateful for your support and involvement in our school.”

My Life Publications Editor Wins Media Award

By Steve Sears y Life Publications editor Megan Roche, who knows much about editing a writer’s work for publication, also is a fine writer in her own right.

In fact, her talent just garnered her an accolade. Roche was named an International Pain Foundation 2019 Hero of Hope Award winner for a January 2019 cover story she wrote about singer and dancer Paula Abdul and her struggles with chronic pain for iPain Living Magazine.

Roche, who won in the “Media-Journalist” category, and four other winners received their awards on November 15 at the Comic Pain Relief show in Los Angeles, CA. The award winners were recognized in the event program and received a trophy.

“It was such an honor just to be nominated with so many other talented media companies and journalists,” says Roche. “To be honest, when the competition for public votes first began, I wasn’t sure I could actually pull it off. I am also someone who is a fierce competitor, so I wasn’t going to let this award go without a fight. When I got the phone call that I had been successful, I really couldn’t believe it. It meant so much to me to have as much public support as I did. I had so many people reaching out to me to let me know that they voted, had friends constantly sharing my link to vote on social media, I consistently asked people for votes, but I could not have done it without the support of all of those who voted. Whether you cast one vote or voted every single day from every single device you own, I am very humbled and very grateful for all your support.”

Roche learned via a received email a few months after article publication that she had been nominated. The months

of July and August were open to public voting, the second year in which the public decided the winner. More than 33,500 public votes were cast, and Roche was her category’s winner with 28.1% of the vote.

Roche explains the background of the article which won her the honor. “I owe this all to someone who has been a part of my life for so many years. When I was 13, I fell in love with American Idol, just like pretty much every other teen at the time. I spent so much time reading up on contestants, learning songs that were sung each week, and I always imagined what it would be like to meet Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul.” Viewing the program led her to take a keen interest in Abdul’s career. “Like any other 13-year-old, I learned as much as I could about her and knew that I wanted to be just like her. When I first met her in 2007, it was a very emotional moment, one that I will never forget.”

In 2018, when Roche learned that Abdul would be headlining at Morristown’s Mayo Center for the Arts, she - at that time a writer for the media outfit she now edits for - pitched the editorial team for the opportunity to interview Abdul.

She scored the interview, but a few days after she had written and submitted the article, Abdul announced that due to production delays, she would not be able to open in Morristown as originally scheduled. Roche then searched for another viable angle and market for the piece. “Knowing that Paula suffers from chronic pain, I approached a charity that she has worked with for years to see if they would be interested in my article. The team at iPain Living Magazine gave me the okay and I reworked it and sent it in to hopefully be approved.” Although a familiar subject, Roche stressed over the process somewhat. “As any reporter will tell you,

the best thing you can do for any interview is be prepared.

When I got the approval to do an interview, it was very tough for me to come up with questions. I also knew that I wouldn’t have the opportunity to have any follow up questions. Throw in the fact that I had a time limit of 15 minutes, I knew this interview was going to be a tough one. While you are probcontinued on page 20

I sat up for nights on end agonizing on how I could do this justice. Finally, one day, it all came pouring out of me at 3:00 in the morning. That’s writing in a nutshell. You let it sit and sit and one day it just all makes sense and you are typing away on your keyboard.

You really have to trust the creative process.”

The article received lots of positive praise and, for Roche, was monumental. “When I found out that it was the front-page cover story for iPain Living Magazine for the January quarter, I was floored. Not only did I get to write a cover story on someone who I ad-

mire and am inspired by, I was able to also get my very first magazine cover story.”

The evening of the ceremony, Roche walked the orange (orange is the color for chronic pain awareness) carpet and did interviews with media that wanted to talk to her about her advocacy work for those who suffer from chronic pain and chronic illness – not an easy task for a reporter. “I’m so used to being the one who asks the questions, and now the roles are reversed,” she says with a laugh. “I also had to make an acceptance speech in front of a pretty large crowd of people. Getting ready for the event was crazy. It’d been a process of finding a red-carpet style dress, preparing an acceptance speech,

or most people the holidays are a time for family and friends but for our war heroes in VA hospitals it can be sad and lonely.

It’s heartbreaking to realize that many of these brave service men and women don’t have family in the area and some have no family at all.

Project Help is ever so aware of this heartbreaking situation. Periodically they visit the Lyons hospital and bring cards from youngsters and treats for the PTSD ward. “The patients love it…they are so happy to see us.

and booking travel. I think it completely hit me when I boarded the plane to Los Angeles that this was all really happening.”

Roche credits her support system for giving her the strength. “I feel like I need to use this opportunity to thank so many people. I seriously would not have had the opportunity to represent My Life Publications if it weren’t for the people who took time out of their busy schedules to make sure they voted each day. I was really surprised to see the amount of people who came out to support me. From former high school classmates to elected officials in towns I covered for newspapers when I was just starting out, I was stunned and appreciative to hear of all those who supported me. Roche, who has a Master of Arts with a

“I enjoy being able to look back at the earlier articles in my career and remind myself how far I’ve come,” she says. “I treasure some of those very first articles I’ve ever written, and I can’t wait to see what future articles are waiting for me down the road.” She then sits back in thought, then leans forward. “ My career is slowly but surely taking off. I really want to keep sharing people’s stories of success and overcoming adversity. I would also like to start my own podcast where I interview people who have been through some of the toughest times and highlight the fact that even though we can have lows, it really is all about the climb to the top. I would also like to eventually go back to school and earn a second master’s degree in investigative journalism.”

And yes, she indeed has a copy of the Abdul article – in a very special place. “When I brought her a copy of the magazine so she could see it, she loved everything about it.

For me, that approval meant everything. The article that I spent countless nights struggling to write was worth it. She even signed a copy for me and it’s proudly hanging in my bedroom. For me, this really proves that if you dream big, you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to.”

Morris Educational Foundation Auditions for 13th Annual Morristown Onstage

he Morris Educational Foundation (MEF) has announced that registration is now open for auditions for its thirteenth annual talent show, Morristown ONSTAGE! The show will showcase the best amateur talent from Morristown, Morris Township & Morris Plains.

The event will be held on February 26, 2020 at the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown, New Jersey.

Four distinguished arts and entertainment professionals will judge the competition. Again this year there will be a $1,000 cash prize for 1st place for contestants ages 19 and over, $1,000 cash prize for 1st place for contestants ages 18 and under, a $500 award for the “Audience Choice” Winner which is a “text-to-vote” at the end of the show, and a $250 Rossoff Rising Star Award for talent training chosen by the Morristown ONSTAGE Steering Committee.

One Man Can Make a Difference in Many Ways

ichael Kambourakis, the owner of Terzako Furs on Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell recently spoke at the United Nations. He was invited as a humanitarian and discussed his work in the Dominican Republic with the help of private funding. For many years Mike was concerned about a small area that had been severely damaged due to a hurricane. He told the United Nations how he worked to build a clinic in the Dominican Republic by raising money and actually being almost the general contractor on the job. After the Clinic was built, he was responsible for raising the funds needed to build medical housing on the premises to allow doctors from the United States availability to go down to the clinic and take care of patients for brief periods of time.

An important part of the presentation was how one can accomplish more and faster privately, rather than going through time prolonged by federal government approvals. In 5 years time, the clinic and dorms were completed. Mike’s fellow Rotarians helped with the fundraising and putting the finishing touches on the latest addition, an outdoor dining facility. The clinic has been in operation since its grand opening in November 2017. Many diabetes missions have taken place and the dental office is now complete.

This whole project started when Mike heard about

the lack of clean water, school supplies and many other necessities in the Dominican Republic. He went there to see firsthand about the conditions. He decided he needed to help. That was the beginning of a labor of love which he continues and envisions even more. He is amazing and proves that one man can make a difference in many lives.

Mike started this in a small way and began to collect items that he shipped or personally brought to the community. On his numerous trips to the Dominican Republic his luggage consisted of school supplies, clothing, tooth brushes, and medical supplies. He collected items from his clients, businesses in the area and numerous other places and shipped them personally to aid the people of the Dominican Republic. Since the nearest clinic for medical care was very far away, Mike came up with the idea to build a clinic.

Mike is truly an inspiration.

The United Nations heard about his unbelievable work, and asked him to speak there to inspire other individuals on how they can do their own projects to help people who are in dire need of the basic things in life.

West Morris Student Attends Prestigious Medical Conference

By Jason Cohen senior at West Morris Central High School was recently recognized for his completion of a prestigious medical conference for students in the summer.

In October, Raahim Iftikhar, 17, of Long Valley, a senior at West Morris Central High School, was the recipient of the Award of Excellence for his completion of the National Academies Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Boston. He attended the conference in June.

“There were a lot of emotions,” Iftikhar he said regarding winning the award. “I was just kind of baffled. I was ecstatic when I received the award.”

Iftikhar, who has been passionate about the field of medicine his entire life, said the conference was worth going to and he is proud he was recognized.

“I’ve always been interested in science and math,” he said. “The congress of future medical leaders allowed me to know that I do want to pursue the field in medicine.”

The theme of the Congress was “Greatness Awaits,” and students were mentored by renowned doctors. There were Nobel Prize Laureates, top medical school deans, leaders in medical research and cutting-edge technology and leaders from private industry.

The doctors Mario Capecchi, a biophysicist and a professor of human genetics at the University Of Utah School of Medicine, J. Craig Venter, who is regarded as one of the leading scientists of the 21st century for his contributions to genomic research, Sir Richard Roberts, an English biochemist and a Nobel Laureate and Rakesh Jain, an oncologist and professor at Harvard University. Iftikhar enjoyed meeting and picking the brain of Jain.

Furthermore, students had the chance to view a live knee replacement and learned about state-of-the-art diagnostic tools.

Iftikhar has done an internship at Stevens Institute of Technology in

Hoboken, worked at Cura Inc, a rehabilitation center in Secaucus and volunteers at Saint Clare’s Dover Hospital.

He said the most important thing he learned at the conference is “whatever you want to do you can achieve it, no matter your age.”

His two uncles, Imran and Rizwan are doctors in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, and he plans to follow in their footsteps and one day join the medical field.

While he isn’t sure if he will go abroad, he is keeping his options open.

Looking to the future, he is applying to a few colleges with a goal of studying biology and or biomedical engineering and he hopes to eventually become a pediatrician.

“I think I can have an impact in the field of medicine as well,” he said. “They’ve (his uncles) helped me and guided me.”

Lakeside Tavern Set to Open in Mount Olive

By Megan Roche new restaurant is coming to the Mount Olive area that will offer the best of both seafood and tavern fare. It’s also got quite the view of Budd Lake. Projected to open in early December, Lakeside Tavern will be a new go to spot. It’s convenient location on Route 46 will offer easy access to Route 80, Route 206, and Route 24. The family friendly location will have some incredible sunsets and houses picture windows for all to enjoy.

Budd Lake has been a staple in the Mount Olive community for decades. Budd Lake is the largest natural lake in New Jersey at 374 acres. Formerly known as Hattacawanna Lake, the lake was named for Lt. John Budd who was the first military officer to train a home guard to protect the community against threats. Lt. Budd also owned 1300 acres of land in the area back in 1714. The lake has been home to many families throughout the years, but was an extremely popular summer vacation destination in the 1920’s. Hotels graced the area around the lake, with the most popular ones being the Greene Inn and the Budd Lake Hotel.

As time has passed, the lake has still been a source of recreation for many in the greater Mount Olive communities. The lake is also the source for the south branch of the Raritan River. Budd Lake has a depth of seven to 12 feet and

was created by thousands of years of decaying plant material such as black spruce and tamarack. Budd Lake Beach is a great place to bring family and friends during the summer months.

received a liquor license and will be operating a full bar.

“I was successful in the real estate business. I’ve always enjoyed seeing restaurant operations, they have always piqued my interest and as I became successful in the real estate business, I felt that I would try my hand at owning restaurants as well,” Bussel said.

Lakeside Tavern will take be located at the old High Noon location, directly across from the lake. There will be ample parking available. The laidback atmosphere will house a 15-20 seat bar and be family friendly and economical. The owners are also planning on adding a rooftop patio with a full bar. The food at Lakeside Tavern will be predominantly seafood, but also tavern food, such as burgers, wings, and pasta. Monthly specials and the entire menu are still being decided upon, but the end goal is to provide affordable seafood to the greater Mount Olive area. The anticipated opening date is around early December.

Lakeside Tavern is located at 331 Route 46, Budd Lake.

Restaurant hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Lakeside Tavern will be closed on Tuesdays.

Many recipes can be made healthier with some simple substitutions, and that even includes decadent desserts. Take, for example, “Wickedly Decadent Deep Chocolate Truffles” from “Low Fat for Life,” (DK)

by Sue Krietzman. This low-fat version of a high-fat classic will taste delicious without being too sinful.

Wickedly Decadent Deep Chocolate Truffles Makes 24 • 6 ounces semisweet chocolate • 6 ounces very low-fat fromage frais • 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract • ½ ounces semisweet chocolate, grated 1. Break the chocolate into a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Let it melt, stirring

occasionally.

2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the fromage frais, sugar & vanilla until combined.

3. When the chocolate is melted and smooth, remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Slowly fold the chocolate into the fromage frais mixture, using a rubber spatula to incorporate every bit of chocolate. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for an hour.

4. Line a baking sheet with waxed paper.

Scatter the grated chocolate on a plate.

Scoop out the chilled chocolate mixture in teaspoonfuls, roll into balls, then roll the balls in the grated chocolate and put on the prepared baking sheet. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm.

5. Put the truffles in small paper cases and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to use.

3/4 cup powdered sugar 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 teaspoon salt 2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cup peppermint crunch baking chips In stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, cream butter, powdered sugar, vanilla and salt until smooth. Gradually add flour and mix on low until combined. Add baking chips and continue mixing on low until fully combined.

On wax paper or parchment paper, form dough into 12-14-inch log and freeze at least 30 minutes, or until firm.

Remembering Romero

By Richard Mabey Jr. n this first chapter of this new column, "Journey to Truth," I've chosen to tell a simple, true story of a young man who passed by my Gate House, every weekday. Living in a gated community in Central Florida, for several years now, I have worked as a Gate Guard now for about six years. The story of Romero is very near and dear to my heart. It is a classic example Richard Mabey Jr. of how simple acts of kindness can come back to you, tenfold.

It was in January of 2014, when I was working at the southernmost section of the gated community that I live in, in Central Florida, that I first met Romero. This was a section of the gated community that was under construction at the time. At that time, I began my work shift at six in the morning. Each weekday morning, between 6:00 and 6:15, Romero would drive by my Gate House, in his dear old pickup truck.

Romero was all of 19. He once told me his age, in one of our many early morning conversations. Romero was originally from Mexico and he worked as a Laborer on the section where they were building new homes. Romero had a Crucifix hanging from the rearview mirror of his windshield. He had a Holy Bible wedged between the windshield and his dash-

board, on the driver's side of his faithful, old pickup truck.

We would often talk about the importance of having faith in God. In time, Romero and I got to be friends. Romero would stop and talk to me for about five minutes every day. I remember how Romero's face would light up when he talked about his girlfriend, Maria. Well, one Friday morning, Romero stopped by my Gate House and announced that he was going to ask Maria to marry him, on Saturday night.

I asked Romero if he had talked to Maria's Dad yes. He told me that he had gotten permission from Maria's father, to ask Maria to marry him. Romero was so excited, as he talked to me about Maria. He was nervous and anxious as to how Maria would respond to his proposal. I told Romero that I would pray for him. He smiled, thanked me, waved goodbye and drove off to his work site.

The following Monday morning came. Romero drove up in his old pickup truck. He didn't have to say a word to me.

I could tell by the expression on Romero's face, what had happened. With tears in his eyes, Romero told me that Maria had turned him down. I told Romero that I was truly sorry. I simply told him not give up. That if he truly loved Maria, to not be discouraged.

Sadly, within a month or so, Romero and Maria broke up.

I felt Romero's pain when he told me that early morning. I felt like I was looking at myself, when I was Romero's age.

Here we were, from different cultures, we were of different generations, still I felt the pain that this fine young man was enduring.

I counseled Romero as well as I could, in his early three

to five minute stops at my Gate House. I remember that I told Romero that there were plenty of fish in the sea. I told him that any young lady would consider herself honored to go out on a date with him. I knew that my words did little to comfort Romero. But still, I did my best to bring hope to the young man's heart.

The Friday before Father's Day arrived. Romero drove up to my Gate House in his old pickup truck. He handed me the very card that I've included in this column. Romero simply said to me, "Mr. Richard, this is for you. A gift for you."

The card was a Father's Day Prayer Card. It stated that I would be prayed for at the upcoming Father's Day Mass at Romero's church. I was deeply honored. I told Romero that the good Lord had not graced me to be a father. Romero's reply dearly touched my heart.

Romero simply said, "Mr. Richard, you're like a father to me."

I nearly cried. I got choked up. I thanked Romero. He smiled. He drove off to his work site.

In the early Fall of that year, I got transferred to one of the Gate Houses in the northern section of my Gated Community. After I got transferred, I never saw Romero again. I never got his phone number or asked him for his email address. I had only gotten a few days notice of my transfer. It's just the way life is at times.

I think of Romero, from time to time. Somehow and some way, I made an impact on that fine young man's life. I know that Romero had a positive affect upon my life. I often wonder how he is doing.

Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience

O

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience.

Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event.

Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering.

“I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab.

Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.”

Schwab joined the

Alumni Board of Epic Experience as an Outreach Specialist in June 2015.

In 2017, she became the Alumni Team lead, and in 2018 joined the Board of Directors.

Morris Co. Sheriff Hosts U.S. Health & Human Services Official

U

nited States Department of Health and Human Services Regional Executive Officer Dennis Gonzalez on Monday, October 21, visited the Morris County Sheriff’s Office Hope One mobile substance use resource and recovery unit while promoting National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 26.

Mr. Gonzalez, Public Affairs Specialist Sean Hightower, and Matt Birchenough, Director of Special Events for the Partnership For A Drug-Free New Jersey, met Sheriff James M. Gannon and his Hope One team that was on the Morristown Green as part of a twice-weekly schedule of bringing critical recovery services directly to people.

Mr. Gonzalez was in Morristown to promote National Take-Back Day when people can drop off expired and unused prescription medications at multiple locations, including at least 13 in Morris County. Mr. Gonzalez said medicine cabinets containing unused opioid prescription drugs can tempt people into experimenting or trying a few, which can easily lead to addiction and a quest on the street for cheaper drugs like heroin.

Mr. Gonzalez met the Hope One team – Morris County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Erica Valvano, CARES Certified Peer Recovery Specialist Kelly LaBar and Madine Despeine-Udoh, Director of Self-Help, Advocacy and Education for the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris – while Sheriff Gannon detailed Hope One’s impressive statistics since its launch on April 3, 2017.

“Hope One is an outstanding program, very innovative and creative. Congratula-

tions to the Sheriff for having the vision to bring this to Morris County. It’s great the Sheriff is so proactive in a county where you wouldn’t think addiction would be happening,” said Mr. Gonzalez, who oversees HHS Region 2 that encompasses New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

“For the Executive Officer of the federal Department of Health and Human Services to visit Hope One and meet people struggling with substance use disorders, that shows true concern and a commitment to end the grip of addiction that opioids and heroin have on so many people,” Sheriff Gannon said.

Hope One has had contact with 9,389 individuals since its launch, and trained 2,057 people in how to administer Narcan to reverse an opioid-induced overdose.

The staff have arranged for 152 people to receive recovery or rehab services and another 114 people have been connected to mental health services.

The US Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is one of multiple federal, state, county and local programs to curb the opioid and heroin epidemic. It’s a safe, convenient and responsible way to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs. In Morris County, it supplements Prescription Drug Drop-Off boxes that many police departments have on-site.

The National Take Back Day in April 2019 brought in 937,443 pounds – nearly 469 tons – of unused or expired prescription medications.

The Story of Chanukah

I

t’s Chanukah and in Israel and in many places around the world Jews are lighting candles in their window as night falls. They’re adding a little light to the world and reminding everyone of the miracles that happened to their ancestors so long ago.

Over two thousand years ago, the Jews of Israel were ruled by the Greek conquerors of Syria. Antiochus, the Greek king, wanted all of his subjects to live like Greeks so he made laws prohibiting Jews to practice their

religion by forbidding the study of the Torah or keeping the mitzvot. The Jews revolted and had a whole army fighting the Greeks.

After many long years, the Jews finally threw the Greek army out of the country. The first thing they did as soon as they conquered Jerusalem was to rededicate their Temple (Chanukah means “dedication”.) When they tried to light the menorah, all they could find was enough oil to last them for one day. To make more oil would have taken at least

Ever since then, Jews have celebrated the victory over the Greeks during the holiday of Chanukah. On the first night we light one candle, on the second night we light two candles, and so on. By the eighth night we have eight candles burning brightly, reminding us of the eight days that the oil burned in the Temple and of the Jewish struggle against oppression.

“Pirsumei nisa” or publicizing the miracle is a very important custom on Chanukah.

We light the candles in a window or by a door facing the street so that everyone passing by will see them and remember the miracles that happened. The special menorah we use on Chanukah is called a “chanukiah” in Hebrew. It has places for eight candles and an extra place for the “shamash” – the candle we use to light all the other candles.

There’s an old custom of giving children gifts of coins on Chanukah. Sometimes the coins are real and sometimes they are made of chocolate (gelt.) Since the miracle of Cha-

nukah happened through a jar of oil, one way to remember the miracle is to eat foods cooked in oil during Chanukah. “Latkes,” or potato pancakes fried to a crispy, golden brown are one popular Chanukah food. “Sufganiyot” or jelly donuts are another as they are also fried in oil.

“Dreidels” are a favorite toy on Chanukah. They are four-sided tops with Hebrew letters painted or carved on the sides. The letters – nun, gimel, heh, and shin stand for the Hebrew words: “Nes gadol hayah sham” (A great miracle happened there.) One way to play dreidel is to spin it for money. Everyone puts a coin or gelt in the pot, then they spin the dreidel to see who wins: nun means nothing – you don’t have to put in another coin and you don’t get anything; gimel means you get everything in the pot; heh means you get half of what is in the pot; and shin means you have to put one into the pot.

In Israel, a dreidel is called a “sevivon.” The sevivon has a “peh” instead of a shin on one side, so that the letters stand for “Nes gadol hayah poh” (A great miracle happened here.)
