Mendham Borough Plans For Scott’s Farm Open Space
By Anastasia Marchese endham Borough Administrator Richard Merkt is very pleased to be planning the newest addition to the park system in Mendham, Scott’s Farm. This historic property belonged to the Cary family back in the 1800’s. Until it was recently purchased by the Borough, it belonged to the Scott’s family, who still owns the farmhouse adjacent to the farm property. The house in located in Mendham Township, but the barn and fields fall within Borough boundaries.
For those who wonder about the difference between the Borough and township, the split dates back to 1906-07, when there was a disagreement between Mendham Town residents as to the creation of a city water system. Farmers who had wells preferred to keep things the way that they were, whereas the growing number of townspeople preferred plans for a municipal water system. Since the two factions could not agree, the more rural, agricultural area of the town, became the Borough of Mendham and the remaining area of the
township went ahead with plans for city water. According to Merkt, the Scott’s Farm property has “one of the last great vistas from Mountainside Road down toward the north branch of the Raritan River.” The property also has the advantage of good placement, in relation to other open space and recreation areas. “It is a connecting property, almost a keystone property,” said Merkt. The property borders a borough park, Mountain Valley Park, as well as the Bi-Arbor Arboretum. It is also adjacent to the Patriot’s Path. The New York & New Jersey Trail Conference website describes the Patriot’s Path as “a unifying ribbon, this 35 mile path links many different parks, watershed lands, and historic sites. In southern Morris County it travels mostly along the corridors of the Whippany, Black and Raritan rivers.” Having the ability to connect a possible trail on the Scott’s farm property to the Patriot’s Path made the property even more appealing for the Borough Council. Councilman John Andrews and Mayor Neil Henry, were instrumental in the acquisition process. Merkt explained that 25
percent of the purchase price for the property came from the Borough’s Open Space Fund. This is money that has been set aside so that when an opportunity like this came along, the Borough would be in a position to move forward. The rest of the funds were received from the county and the MUA (Municipal Utilities Authority). Merkt sites this property as a prime example of why the borough has an Open Space Fund. He considers the acquisition of the Scott’s Farm land to be “one of the [borough’s] best accomplishments of 2015.” The property may have been closed in 2015 but the
planning for how to use the land is continuing. Since the land is designated for passive recreation, there won't be any construction of playing or balls fields. Instead the land will be set aside for hiking, biking, running and jogging. The property is also adjacent to Mendham Commons, which is home to many Borough citizens. One hope is that having access to this area will enrich the lives of Mendham Commons residents. As to plans for the property, the outline is to have “some kind of trail along the perimiter of the property, about 6/10ths of a mile. It would be a loop that would connect with Patriot’s
Path.” Merkt is excited and pleased with the borough’s decision to preserve this very special part of Mendham. “The idea was to leverage the available grant funds to acquire open space for future generations of Mendham residents.” These 11 acres of land have a “wonderful old red barn” situated as part of the character of the place. Even the chicken coops behind the barn are going to be preserved. This property “is set aside permanently as open space” and will help preserve the character of the borough, to “keep Mendham Borough, Mendham Borough.”

Did You Know?
he arrival of cooler weather marks a prime time to plant bulbs that will bloom come spring and summer. Bulbs should be planted as soon as the ground is cool, ideally when temperatures average between 40 and 50 F. Just be sure to plant bulbs at least six weeks before the ground freezes for optimal success. Always
follow the bulb distributor’s guidelines for planting, including suggestions regarding spacing and soil depth. Remove any weeds and loosen the soil to get started. In addition, think about mixing in compost or other organic matter to enrich the soil if it lacks nutrients.

The British Invaded Mendham July Fourth Weekend
By Maryanne Christiano Mistretta t was the 1960s British Invasion all over again Sun., June 3, when New Jersey rock outfit Carnaby Street performed at the Borough Park Gazebo in Mendham. More than 200 people, of all ages, and all areas, gathered together to enjoy Mendham’s picturesque park setting. The band executed spot-on recollections of British artists such as Herman’s Hermits’ “Something Good,” The Zombies “Time of the Season,” The Kinks “Well Respected Man,” The Rolling Stones, “Out of Time,” and an epic rendition of The Who’s “See Me, Feel Me/Listening to You,” which had about a dozen happy kids dancing and doing gymnastics on the well groomed lawn in front of the pergola. After a 90 minute set, Carnaby Street ended the show with a magnificent tribute of Simon and Garfunkle’s “America” in honor of Independence Day. “That was my favorite,” said five-yearCHIMNEY BUILDING & REPAIRS CLEANING • CAPS • LINERS DECKS • RENOVATIONS SIDEWALKS • WATERPROOFING KITCHENS • BATHS WINDOWS • STONE WORK

old Fiona Carty, enthusiastically. “It made me feel good.” Ten-year-old Lexie Hammel added, “That was my favorite too. I liked the music and it was fun to dance.” After the show, excitable children ran to the stage asking the band members for autographs. But this is nothing new to Carnaby Street singer and guitarist, Chris Roselle, of Bordentown, who has been playing professionally since 1982, right after he graduated high school. His first band was The Characters. “We played in New Jersey doing covers then went to all originals,” said Roselle. “We played the Dirt Club and were on the original circuit.” In 1986 The Characters had an opportunity to perform at the 20th Anniversary Monkees’ Convention, which coincided with The Monkees reunion tour – which helped skyrocket The Characters popularity. The Characters also cut an album with Chip Douglas from The Turtles, who also produced The Monkees.

will resume his original post in the band to help out. In addition to playing lead guitar/vocals in Carnaby Street, Roselle also plays lead guitar and sings with Rave On, a Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison tribute band. Carnaby Street has been around since 1995, with Roselle joining the following year. The band is based around the British Invasion music and other artists of the 1960s. “It’s just a love for that music,” Roselle said. In addition to Roselle, Carnaby Street is made up of Dino DiMartino of Madison, on drums and vocals; and Pete Bremy of Stanhope, on bass guitar and vocals. Chris Breetveld of Maplewood was the substitute bassist for Sunday night’s show. Roselle’s love for music began as a child. He started out listening to old school country music like Johnny Cash and Buck Owens. “My intro to music was what my father was listening to,” he said. “Then I found Elvis and The Beatles.”
He got his first guitar at 12 and started playing with guys in the neighborhood doing Beatles songs. “Not singing,” Roselle said, “learning the instruments.” Roselle was raised in a musical family. His father played guitar and his mother played piano. But Roselle was the only one that took it to a professional level. Though Roselle put out a solo project 10 years ago, he feels he’s better at interpreting other people’s songs rather than writing his own. He said, “Johnny Rivers was notorious for that; Elvis too. Not to put me on those guys’ levels. I’m not a songwriter, that’s all.” He continued, “My purpose of doing Carnaby Street and Rave On – this is my way of carrying the torch. Even though we did a CD of Roy Orbison, I want people to listen to the original songs.” For more information on Carnaby Street visit: http://www.carnabystreetband.net/. Magaletta Transforms Properties To One-Of-A Kind Masterpieces
By Cheryl Conway ustom, creation, transformation, specialization, originality and endless options come to mind when describing the services provided at Magaletta Design Environment in Parsippany. With 25 years in the industry, business owner Matthew Magaletta of Florham Park knows how to transform any property or backyard into a sensational yet functional space that carries with it that “wow factor with any glance of the eye. Magaletta Design Environment is a full landscape design, custom pool builder specializing in outdoor kitchens, full masonry work, decks, outdoor lighting, lawn maintenance, waterfalls and just about everything for outdoor properties. Magaletta Designs is not a “typical landscaping company. “There’s a lot of landscapers out there, says Magaletta. Anyone can cut lawns or plant bushes. “People call me when they want their properties and backyards to stand out beyond the rest. When they want to wow their neighbors, that’s when they call me in. Involved in landscaping since he was 13, Magaletta started out cutting lawns for neighbors. He worked with his neighbor who was a landscape designer.
“I loved working outside, explains Magaletta. “I took a liking to it, and continued throughout high school and college. His experience and passion for the landscaping industry “just grew and grew and grew, he says. “I have the eye for it, he adds. “Everyone has their niche in life; this is my niche. I can create anything and turn it into a work of art. Unlike other landscape companies, at Magaletta, “We specialize in custom designs for our clients, he says. To ensure that customers like the project that is planned, Magaletta provides a 3D video design to the customer. “We show them a 3D design, so they can see what their house will look like on the outside when the project is completed. While other companies offer a 3D video, Magaletta’s “specialty design is quite spectacular, he says. Most of Magaletta’s client base is for private homes in Morris and Essex counties but he has done some industrial work such as the landscaping and design at Park Savoy in Florham Park. “We work where the client wants us, says Magaletta, adding that it will travel even further like to South Jersey if requested. No matter the locale, “every job we are doing is a cus-
tom project, he says. “We custom to customers’ likes and wants. He uses all kinds of products and equipment, all different patios and paver stones. All of the lighting work is LED; “that’s the norm now. Working in the landscaping business has been enjoyable for Magaletta. “What I enjoy the most is going to my client’s house and transforming their properties to showcases in the neighborhood. I feel proud that my signs are on their properties. I become personable with clients; they become my friend. Homeowners will not be disappointed contracting with Magaletta for all of their outdoor property needs. “We are a reputable company with over 25 years of experience, says Magaletta. “We are honest, we are knowledgeable and you will have an owner, myself, on the projects. For the month of September, Magaletta is offering three different promotions: 10 percent off any landscaping construction job; $150 off landscaping design of property; or buy 10 LED lights and get three free. For more information, go to magalettadesigns.com. To arrange for an appointment or contract a project, call 973539-1818.

Homeless Solutions Earns Four Star Rating
omeless Solutions’ strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency have earned it a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. Since 2002, using objective analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a fourstar rating. “Homeless Solutions’ exceptional four-star rating sets it apart from its peers and demonstrates its trustworthiness to the public,” according to Michael Thatcher, president & CEO of Charity Navigator. “Only a quarter of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of our four-star rating. Homeless Solutions continues to be a part of a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world’s most pressing challenges. Based on its
four-star rating, people can trust that their donations are going to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support Homeless Solutions.” Homeless Solutions has had a four-star Charity Navigator rating for 12 of the past 14 years. “It’s important our donors trust that we’re using their donations wisely in our work to provide shelter, services, and supportive housing to homeless and low income people,” said Homeless Solutions Chief Development Officer Stephanie Cicale. “Our four-star Charity Navigator rating demonstrates to our supporters our good governance and financial accountability.” Homeless Solutions is a private, non-profit organization that has been helping the homeless and working poor in the Morris County area since 1983.

event. Also featured was a Battle of the Bands, an A Capella Showdown, a DJ playing throughout the night, face painting by local students, a variety of games and activities, and a multitude of themed laps. Also sponsored was a Survivor Dinner for cancer survivors and their caregivers who attended the event to honor their perseverance in the face of adversity. The 2016 Relay for Life has been the most successful in recent years. Thanks to beautiful weather, a dedicated student committee, and inspiring participants, the West Morris District came together to fight back against cancer and celebrate those who have overcome the terrible disease. Relay for Life is a true testimony to the unity within the community, despite school rivalries, students from both Mendham and Central are able to work together to raise funds and awareness for a disease that touches the lives of everyone across the globe each day.

United Way Of Northern New Jersey Kicks Off School Supplies Drive
nited Way of Northern New Jersey is seeking help from volunteers and donations of new school supplies for its annual United Way Tools for School drive, allowing children to start the new school year with the basic tools needed for success in school. The drive will benefit more than 10,000 elementary and middle school children of ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and families in poverty throughout the northern New Jersey region. United Way Tools for School seeks to lessen the strain on already strapped house-
T
hold budgets. Last year, on average, families with children in K-12 in the United States spent $98 on school supplies such as backpacks, notebooks and pencils, according to the National Retail Federation. That does not include electronics, clothing and accessories. “ALICE families that are working hard but can’t keep up with the high cost of living are faced with having to choose between buying school supplies or paying for basic bills,” United Way Senior Vice President Kiran Gaudioso said. “Together, we can help ease this financial struggle and give
MUA Seeks Bulk Compost Purchasers
he Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority is seeking some new customers for its vegetative waste program. In particular, the MUA is looking for “bulk” haulers or purchasers – those who would come to the county site to buy anywhere from several hundred to several
thousand yards of materials, particularly unscreened compost. The MUA has two facilities in Morris County in Parsippany and Mt. Olive. Register with the MUA program. To register or get more information, contact Steve Adams at 973-631-5109.
students the basics to start off the school year on the right track.” United Way is making it easier to make donations by partnering with YouGiveGoods.com again, which allows donors to make an online purchase of supplies that will be delivered automatically to United Way. Donations can be made by visiting www.UnitedWayNNJ.org/ToolsforSchool. In addition, donations will be accepted throughout the five-county region. The following is a list of local drop-off locations. Morris County: On Thurs., Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., donations can be dropped off at Housing Partnership in Dover. Suburban Essex County: on Mon., Aug. 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., donations can be dropped off at the United Way office in Montclair. Warren County: On Tues., Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon, donations can be dropped off at Taylor Street School in Washington. Based on the needs expressed by local educators, United Way is collecting the fol-
lowing school supplies: backpacks, lunch boxes, binders, three-ring notebooks, book covers, filler paper, pocket folders, composition and spiral notebooks, index cards, calculators, pencils, pencil cases, pencil sharpeners, erasers, pens, highlighters, crayons, markers, colored pencils, construction paper, glue, tape, rulers, dry erase markers, and scissors. In addition, school nurses have asked for personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, Band-Aids, and kindergarten and first grade-aged children’s underwear and socks. Gift cards that can be used to purchase items such as shoes and clothing are also appreciated. Last year, with the help of 292 volunteers, supplies valued at $114,000 were collected and distributed to 55 elementary and middle schools and 14 nonprofit agencies throughout the northern New Jersey region. For more information about making donations, visit www.UnitedWayNNJ. org/ToolsforSchool, email Lisa.Galonardo@UnitedWayNNJ.org or call 973993-1160, ext. 503.

xperience the “Butterfly Tent Safari” at the Essex County Environmental Center in Roseland. The Butterfly Tent Safari is an interactive display where visitors can observe hundreds of butterflies while walking through a tent. The display will be set up through Sat., July 30. Hours are Mon. to Fri., noon to 3 p.m.; and Sat., 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A $2 per person admission is suggested. Proceeds will go to the Essex County Parks Foundation and be used to support future educational programs. “The Butterfly Tent Safari at the Essex County Environmental Center is an interactive display of live native butterflies for families to observe and enjoy,” said Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. “Spend your time in the tent feeding the butterflies or simply marveling at their beauty and delicate nature. Listen to a story,
make butterfly crafts, or just take some time to witness the magnificence of nature at our Environmental Center.” In addition to the public viewing times, the Environmental Center is offering butterfly-themed family programs that include access to the butterfly tent on Sat., July 30, at noon. Appropriate for adults and children ages eight and older. “Butterfly Gardening Workshop” will be led by Essex County Rutgers Master Gardener Jean Greeley, who will talk about the basics of creating a butterfly garden. Morris County To Hold First Annual Recovery Walk This September
by Ashley Bouwense he Freedom House Foundation and The George Gramby Observance Committee are teaming together to coordinate the first-annual Morris County Recovery Walk set for 9 a.m., Sat., Sept. 10 at Ginty Field. “This recovery walk was not only formed to raise awareness for alcohol and drug addictions, but also to celebrate recovery,” Director of Freedom House’s Marketing and Development Dawn Knill said. “We want to show that there is hope and life after addition.” Knill explained that there is a state-wide annual recovery walk, but people felt that there needed to be something local. So, volunteers and staff from Freedom House—a non-profit, residential treatment center for adult men— and members of the non-profit George Gramby Committee decided to collaborate on this local effort. “We still see people with addiction afraid to say ‘I’m in recovery,’” said Knill. “because people still see addiction as a choice, not a disease. We hope the Recovery Walk will
destigmatize addiction. The more we talk about it, the better off everyone will be.” The Recovery Walk is a family-friendly event; all ages can participate. The walk is two-and-ahalf miles long and is estimated to take 49 minutes. Participants will reach the finish line at George Gramby Memorial Park, where they will be greeted with a celebration filled with music and refreshments. People are also encouraged to visit the addiction education recovery vendors. Those in the Honor Guard, people who have been in recovery for 10 years or more, will lead the walk. They will be honored with sashes and buttons. Behind the Honor Guard will be the rest of those participating. Freedom House and the George Gramby Committee are reaching out to town dignitaries to guest speak after the walk. More than 700 substance abuse deaths were reported in N.J. alone in 2014, and those statistics do not account for

Vernon Twp. $269,900 This Bi-Level, renovated in 2016, is in move-in condition, and is waiting for the right family to call it Home. Visitors are greeted by a patio-block walkway past a cozy gazebo to the front door. The house features a new eat-in country kitchen with granite island and counters and new stainless-steel appliances. There are 2 full and 1 half bathrooms, all new. New carpeting was laid in each of the bedrooms and in the living room and family room. The dining area has a slider to a new deck. The kitchen, dining area and hallways have gleaming hardwood floors. The house is centrally air conditioned, and is fueled by oil, served by an above-ground tank (an underground was removed in 2014 and certified by the town). The home is situated on nearly 1 acre of park-like grounds complete with gazebo, and wishing well.

unreported deaths. The Freedom House Foundation and The George Gramby Observance Committee are trying to reduce the number of addiction-related deaths through this Recovery Walk, but they also need the support from the community to make a difference. “The only way we can be successful is if the community comes together as a whole,” Knill said. Registration costs $10 for those 13-years or older and those ages six to 12 have a $5 registration fee. Those registering six-years-old and older will receive a Recovery Walk T-shirt. Children five-years-old and under can participate for free. There is no limit to registration, but people should register early if they would like a t-shirt, as shirts are limited. Participants are encouraged to be creative; they can bring banners and posters and wear home-made shirts, if they so choose. Check-in is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. People can register during check in time. The rain date is schedule for Sun., Sept. 18, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Register for the walk online at www.grambyday.org or mail the registration form to The George Gramby Observance Committee, P.O.
